Bajan-Brooklynite Haleek Maul announces his debut release on Lex Records the In Permanence EP.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, 21-year-old rapper, singer and producer Haleek Maul was sent to the tropical island of Barbados at a young age to attend school and be raised outside the city.
Inspired by the sounds that filled his childhood environment, he began creating music while in secondary school, and what started off as innocent rhyming and mimicry of his favourite artists became an obsession which led him to pursue production and greater musical exploration. Formative influences on his style include Vybz Kartel, Damon Albarn, Aphex Twin, Tricky, Crystal Castles and Kanye
West, as well as visual artists like Araki, Kenneth Anger and Chris Cunningham.
Haleek Maul first surfaced in 2012 aged just 16 with the Oxyconteen EP. An album with Chicago production duo Supreme Cuts titled Chrome Lips followed, plus collaborations with Ryan Hemsworth, Le1f, Black Noise and others. After a short hiatus in order to complete his studies, Maul now 21-years-old has been back in the studio and will be releasing his first EP on Lex.

Harlem-based rapper Princess Nokia releases her 1992 Deluxe album via Rough Trade Records. This deluxe edition is an expanded version of last year's breakout mixtape 1992, featuring eight brand new tracks which have been fully remastered. The album is available for the first time on CD and 2xLP on November 10th.

Debut Lp offering from London rap group Jungle Brown. Having featured on SBTV with their Ep 'Take One', this Lp builds on a strong foundation. Sample heavy, with strong saxophone performances from Ayo Odia, the instrumentation is rich and thick in texture. Lyrically the group go from light and playful, to deep and introspective with great subtlety. Keep it Movin (a1) is a light reection of the group moving from Bournemouth to London, while 'In the City' (b1) is a gritty anthem detailing the arrival to the city.
Having a strong performance record behind them as well, the group's reach is good, both in the UK and abroad.

The Aroma are a production unit from Bristol UK who supply a bedrock of masterfully crafted soundscapes for a very carefully selected set of guest MCs. The beats are created by DJ Rumage and engineered and produced by Rola (both from the mighty Bristol Hip Hop crew The Numskullz) with scratch wizard Sir Beans OBE on turntable duty.

Volume 1 has vocals supplied by Junior Disprol, Upfront MC (of Split Prophets), NK (p/k/a Blaktrix), NiLLa, Retna, MCM (of Caveman), Stepasaur (a/k/a Stepchild), Kelz (of 3PM) and last but not least additional vocals by Lizz.E (of the legendary Fresh 4).

At 8 tracks deep this album is short by modern standards but takes you back to a time when albums were 7 or 8 tracks long but overall were a higher standard. Too often now albums have 20 plus tracks with 10 or more fillers and quiet vinyl pressings.

Here you have 8 killers no fillers cut nice and loud and so gives a better sounding product which is something very important to Ruztik Records and AE Productions who have joined forces for this release.

With infectious melodies and razor sharp bars, rapper AWATE flows over psychedelic funk by producer, Turkish on debut album Happiness - a record written and recorded on bail. The MOBO supported artist weaves together stories from Maiden Lane Estate in Camden and his refugee experience to build on his reputation as one of London's most visionary artistic forces. '2018 will see the release of AWATE's debut LP, 'Happiness', written and recording in a two year period while AWATE was on bail for four cases which he was was eventually cleared. The release has had support from Charlie Sloth on BBC 1Xtra, DJ Semtex on BBC 1Xtra, Matt Wilkinson on Beats1, The Line of Best Fit, Complex and MOBO and is entirely produced by Turkish of Dcypha (Sway, Tiggs Da Author). A rapper and producer from Maiden Lane Estate in Camden. Honing his craft from the age of 12, he made a name for himself at the legendary hip-hop spot, Deal Real at the age of 15. AWATE learned from mentors such as Poisonous Poets rappers, Stylah and Lowkey, BBC 1Xtra's DJ Semtex and one of his heroes, Yasiin Bey. As a refugee from Eritrea via Saudi Arabia, AWATE's lyrics are a complex train of thought on subjects like self-esteem, racism, pride and class. Building a reputation as an electrifying and engaging live performer, AWATE has toured worldwide with Lowkey since 2010 and has supported the likes of Jay Electronica, Ghetts, Big Daddy Kane, and Blackstar (Mos Def & Talib Kweli). He has also headlined and performed regularly at The Roundhouse as a Resident Artist at the iconic venue. AWATE's long awaited first release, 2016's 'Shine Ancient' EP was premiered on Complex with features on Noisey, Huck, AFROPUNK, OkayAfrica and premiere's on BBC 6 Music with Gilles Peterson, Jamie Kennedy on Radio X as well as support from DJ MK and Shortee Blitz on KISS.

Planet Asia helped jump-start the West Coast independent hip-hop movement, and has solidified himself as one of the most consistent and respected MCs in the game over his 20+ year career. He dropped his debut EP with producer Fanatik in 1998, and followed up quickly with the singles "Definition of Ill" (Stones Throw) and "Place of Birth" (ABB Records). In 2001, The Source Magazine gave him the 'First Round Draft Pick' and 'Independent Album of the Year' awards for 'How the West Was One', which was recorded with fellow CA rapper Rasco under the group name Cali Agents. This landed him a deal with Interscope Records, where he was signed until 2003 without releasing an album. Planet Asia was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for his feature on the song "W" by Mystic, and was later signed to Avatar Records, which released his official debut album, 'The Grand Opening,' in 2004. It earned him another 'Independent Album of the Year' award from The Source. Later, he started his own imprint Gold Chain Music, on which he has churned out multiple projects. He has also collaborated on albums with the likes of DJ Muggs ('Pain Language'), Evidence ('The Medicine') and Madlib ('Cracks In The Vinyl'), among others, and released songs with artists such as Linkin Park, Bun B, Talib Kweli and Ghostface Killah. The Fresno MC is fresh off of a strong 2017 which featured well-received collaborative albums with producers DirtyDiggs ('Dirty Planet') and Apollo Brown ('Anchovies'). For 2018, Asia teamed up with Bay Area producer izznyce for this true solo project, sure to be considered the next classic in his vast catalog. 'The Golden Buddha' was produced entirely by izznyce (producer for Superstar Quamallah and more) and features AZ, Hus Kingpin, Turbin, Marvelous Mag, Killa Kali, TriState, Xiomara and The Architect. Speaking on the project, Planet Asia says: This album represents the foundation of what Planet Asia is about and that is 'balance'. Me and izznyce also took our time with the record, and had a chance to really vibe out and make the type of music we personally like that will stand the test of time!'

Black Friday LP now made a regular catalogue item. When it comes to authentic, ride-or-die hip-hop, few crews have as much resonance as Mobb Deep. Featuring two double-threat MCs who also produced - Havoc and the sadly-departed Prodigy - the crew changed the hardcore rap game in 1995 with their sophomore classic The Infamous, and went on to rule the dark corners of hip-hop for the second half of the 90s and well into the 2000s. After multiple Mobb Deep platters in the '90s, Prodigy entered the 2000s as a solo artist with force, rolling over a stomping, piano-freaked backdrop laced by producer The Alchemist, with Keep It Thoro.' It has held up over time, proving itself as an anthemic classic that the streets and clubs still respect. Flaunting a smooth-but-menacing flow, Prodigy's no-nonsense lyricism on Keep It Thoro' is prototypical modern age brag rap. Countless MCs have followed his flow, from Fabolous to Joey Bada$$. The song is short and sweet, clocking in at just over 3 minutes. There are no wasted verses, just hardcore rhymes that stay with you. But Thoro' was the tip of the iceberg on what proved to be one of the more coveted rap full-lengths of the era. The album boasted other charting singles, including Rock Dat Shit' and Y.B.E.' (featuring B.G.), but it can be argued that the album's real gems are buried deeper. Genesis,' What U Rep' (featuring Noreaga) and Three' are all sinister yet pensive. Wanna Be Thugs' and Delt With The Bullshit' are strong and evocative Mobb Deep cuts, featuring production and vocals by Havoc. And alongside other standouts, perhaps the deepest cut of all - especially in light of Prodigy's way-too-soon passing due to complications from Sickle Cell Anemia - is You Can Never Feel My Pain,' which details the health issues and challenges this talented MC and producer had been facing his whole life. H.N.I.C. was Prodigy's first solo album, but it is perhaps his best. Among fans he will never be forgotten, for his skills, his storytelling and his no-B.S. approach to the art of MCing.

For his 5th release, rap afficianado Ty takes us on a journey of works from his heart. He tackles subjects like his childhood neighbourhood Brixton and works through issues over the course of the album of poverty, depression, racism, family, hiphop and the creative process to philosophical musings on life and even imagined film soundtracks. The album, entitled 'A Work Of Heart' is produced and predominantly written by Ty. The sounds are a mixture of crisp, bouncy production, live instrumentation and vivid and entertaining lyrics. Featured guests include Tall Black Guy, Wayne Francis (United Vibrations) and the legendary Umar Bin Hassan of the Last Poets. Of the album the artist says "This is my life work, it's how I feel...I want to upgrade the view of hiphop." This jazz-infused hiphop album is simultaneously uplifiting and thought-provoking.

'The Layered Effect' by US rapper/producer Andy Cooper offers a punchy reminder of the creative fun to be had in digging for breaks, stringing up loops and layering up stratas of sound. Brimming full of delightful inflexions from the world of jazz, easy listening, film soundtracks and Hollywood voices, it's a perfectly stitched sound patchwork that pays loving hommage to the classic, funky days of early rap. A touching testimony to the joys of Hip-Hop then and now.

More than just the skinny white dude who's into old school beats, Andy Cooper has won his stripes after a twenty year stint with Hip-Hop trio Ugly Duckling, then a couple more hanging out with The Allergies, not to mention the recent release of eight 7" singles, an EP and now his second solo LP.What is utterly charming is how enamoured and respectful he is of how it was at the beginning AND of how it still should be.Far from being the "old timer/delusional revivalist" he describes in 'Last of the Dying Breed', Cooper cares not about colour or age, but that rap stays fresh, exciting, competitive, similar to a precious martial art.

For Andy, rap is a noble form. He's a wordsmith extraordinaire, snappy and audacious, tipping his hat "to all the microphoners who still bring that dedication and expertise to their craft" and choosing to work with equally rapid sparring partners like Blabbermouf and MC Abdominal. Ownership of the genre is a constant theme throughout the LP. Like a contact sport, you punch and fight your way to the mic and once there "no one can take it from me". Reverance is constantly being paid to the dons that went before, overtly Rick Rubin & the Def Jam crew, but covertly the reggae sound systems and jazzers of old.

Not a sloppy note or shabby rhyme here.It's an album that pops and fizzes with quirky beats and funky rhythms from start to finish. With production lines neater and sharper than a pair of sta press trousers, it's impossible not to be seduced by the sheer bouyancy of the lyrics, beats and intention. A refreshingly entire body of work with no low points, only head-nodding highs. It's good to stumble across a hip hop album that has you giggling, thinking, singing and wearing out the soles of your shoes all at once.
