New York rap trio consisting of DJ Curt Catzal and MC’s AJ Rok and MC B-Luv, signed to B-Boy Records, a significant player in the development of hip-hop in the 1980's. The group broke out with an underground hit single ‘Strong Island’ and the song would open their 1988 album Doin’ Damage.

This track is an enduring classic and would become the group’s signature moment. Other highlights on the album include; ‘Stylin’ Lyrics’, ‘The Force Is Buggin’ and ‘Take It Away’.

The 20th Anniversary of The Slim Shady LP is set to release on 3LP 180 gram vinyl and 2CD on 13th December, 2019 in an updated Expanded Edition including bonus tracks, rarities, a capella’s, freestyles, and instrumentals. Originally released on 23rd February, 1999 The Slim Shady LP turned Eminem from an underground rapper into a high-profile celebrity. The album featured production from Dr. Dre, the Bass Brothers, and Eminem himself. The Slim Shady LP is his first album with a major label after his first album Infinite was released on an independent label in 1996. The majority of the album’s lyrical content is written from the perspective of the rapper’s alter ego Slim Shady, whom the rapper created on the Slim Shady EP (1997). The Slim Shady LP went on to be certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) and has sold over 18 million copies worldwide.

A 2xLP re-issue of the seventh album from the hip-hop pioneers, De La Soul. Originally released in 2004, the album features a top line array of guest spots including Ghostface Killah, Sean Paul, Flava Flav and producer J Dilla (A Tribe Called Quest). Unlike their other albums, The Grind Date doesn’t include any ‘skits’ or interludes, it is considered pure quality with no filler. Pitchfork placed the album at number 31 on the "Top 50 Albums of 2004" list.

This 2020 re-issue also features four bonus instrumental tracks.

K-Solo is an American rapper who was part of the Hit Squad in the 1990s. He released two albums under his pseudonym K-Solo. His second album Times Up was released in 1992 and peaked at number 36 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. K-Solo rapping style is slightly aggressive and the music itself is based on a sample-heavy format. Lyrically it’s pretty diverse, focusing on themes as prison live, crime and the daily struggles. The beats never reaches up to more than a 110bpm, holding up to the slow flow style.

With the original UK 7” of this release now as rare as hen’s teeth, and with the group having recently ‘reformed’ for one last album together, the Mr Bongo replica re-release of this 1990 masterpiece by Gang Starr couldn’t be more timely.

The now-legendary duo of DJ Premier and Guru dropped this at the height of hip-hop’s sampling of jazz, which had led to a creative leap forward for the genre. Yet while others plundered in the dark, this instant classic wore its influences on its sleeve and paid verbal homage to the musicians they were sampling. The “melodious funk” of “Thelonious Monk” gets namechecked, while the track samples two of his records, including 1958’s Bop gem ‘Light Blue’.

While both versions presented here have common elements, the ‘Movie Mix’ – so-named for the song’s appearance on the soundtrack to Spike Lee’s mythic jazz biopic ‘Mo’ Better Blues’ – goes in a few different directions to the ‘Video Mix’. Rather than just drop in an instrumental for the B-side, DJ Premier instead shows his versatility by switching up the base track (Kool & The Gang’s 1971 ‘Dujii’) and layering in other samples. In more ways than one, his virtuosity here echoes the improvisation of a jazz musician, akin to Denzel Washington’s Bleak in the movie.

Of course, he’s not the only show in town. The late Guru’s voice is as mellifluous as an instrument itself here, his potted history of the genre and the artists of jazz delivered with his own unmistakable cadence. Without this record, would he have gone on to make his ‘Jazzmatazz’ projects.

Legendary drummer Roy Porter released his first two albums ("Jessica" and "Inner Feelings") in the early to mid 1970's. Although he retired from performing in 1978 on health grounds, he continued to give workshops. In 1994 he released his final album titled Roy Porter Sound Machine '94 – Generation.

The Infamous is the second studio album by the American Hip Hop duo Mobb Deep, released in 1995. The album features guest apperances from Nas, Wu-Tang Clan members, Reakwon and Ghostface Killah. It marked Mobb Deep's transition from a relatively unknown Rap duo to an influential and commercially successful one.

One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore Rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded.

This is hard, underground Hip Hop that demands to be met on its own terms, with few melodic hooks to draw the listener in. Similarly, there's little pleasure or relief offered in the picture of the streets Mobb Deep paint here. They inhabit a war zone where crime and paranoia hang constantly in the air.

The product of an uncommon artistic vision, The Infamous stands as an all-time gangsta/hardcore classic.

After this years Mander House Edits release, Letherette leaves the dance floor behind for a while and returns to Wulf for the latest instalment in the Brown Lounge series. Vol.5 continues the signature chops and melodies.
