Marti Caine - Point Of View

Marti Caine

Point Of View

12inchBEWITH036LP
Be With Records
23.10.2018

Marti Caine's infamous Point Of View is a groovy blend of slow-mo funk, dark disco and precise pop. Originally released on BBC Records in 1981, it has attracted a considerable cult following this century. The odd charity shop score aside, it has been impossible to find a copy for less than eye-watering sums (often selling for over £200) and, as such, it's an honour to present the first officially licensed vinyl reissue of this sublime record. Featuring expert liner notes written by Bill Brewster - perhaps the record's most notable champion - this lovingly curated release is limited to just 500 copies.

Marti Caine was a popular UK TV entertainer in the late 1970s onwards and Point Of View presented her with an opportunity to proceed in a hip direction by working with British R&B heavyweight Barry Blue. His legendary reputation was secured with a string of great records, among them the first three Heatwave albums, the Balearic hit "Afro Dizzi Act" by Cry Cisco and the cult smash "Breakin' In" by Javaroo. However, despite the array of talent working on the album, Point Of View sank without trace at the time. It's something that Blue attributes to the bizarre way BBC Records worked, and he entertainingly expands upon this within the liner notes.

Musically, the highlights are many and memorable. Its most notorious track is the sublime soul stepper "Love The Way You Love Me", the reason most people covet this album so profoundly. However, from the dark dubby disco of "Snowbird City" to the moody ballad "Love Is Running Through Me", the lesser heralded tracks are nothing short of exquisite. Indeed, the chugging elegance of sleazy disco opener "Can I Speak To The World Please" showcases a string-drenched strutting-funk that would've been enviable the world over. It's that good.

The outlandish artwork - presenting a striking, green-eyed Marti treating a tiger to a headlock - has been faithfully restored and is arguably worth the price of admission alone. With access to the original tape transfers, Simon Francis' sensitive mastering elevates the sound throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g. Sadly, Marti died of lymphatic cancer at the tragically early age of 50 in 1995, so is not here to experience what we hope will be a long overdue reappraisal of the hitherto underheard genius of Marti Caine, the singer

The Spitfires - Something Worth Fighting For
  • A1: Something Worth Fighting For
  • B1: Remains The Same

Watford based 4-piece The Spitfires consist of songwriter Billy Sullivan on lead vocals and guitar, Sam Long on Bass/backing vocals, Matt Johnson on drums and George Moorhouse on keyboards. Taking in a wide range of influences from reggae and ska through to punk and soul, this melting-pot of musical genres has helped infuse and consolidate the band's own highlyauthentic sound and style into a progressive take for a new generation of fans.

The band have now announced their new single 'Something Worth Fighting For' (taken from the new album Year Zero) will be released 28th September on limited 7' vinyl and digital download through Hatch Records.

'Something Worth Fighting For' is an inspired lyrical and musical foray into tough times with a rhythm to match. Sullivan's take on trying to escape boring suburban life in times of disarray and uncertainty is set to a pulsating mix of dub and reggae influenced horns, guitars and percussion.

Year Zero is the band's best received album to date and reached number 6 in the UK Independent Chart as well as reaching 8 in the UK Vinyl Chart.

Sleep D & Turner Street Sound - Chilli Lips (Park Dub) / Redback Dub

Sleep D and Turner Street Sound split sides on one record to merge classic dub rhythms with a modern outlook. Kicking the spicy seven inch off, Sleep D melt ambient soundscapes, zonked out sound effects and spiritual percussion into a locked dub-house groove fit for the club and lounge. On the flip, Turner Street Sound (the duo made up of Rings Around Saturn and Midnight Tenderness) open their aural arsenal up to live instrumentation and inward dub excavations to produce the poisoness 'Redback Dub' huge bottom end and a instantly classic feel no doubt!

Black Man's Pride

2x12inchSJRLP398
Soul Jazz Records
28.11.2017

Black Man's Pride is the striking new Studio One collection of deep righteous reggae, featuring Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, The Gladiators, Sugar Minott, The Heptones, Freddie McGregor, Cedric Brooks & more. While the righteousness of blackness is at the heart of the Rastafarian faith, this collection illustrates how black pride remained
a central theme, if not the defining essence, at the very core of all the music created at Studio One Records under the direction of Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd.

In order to understand the centrality of black identity in the music created at Studio One, we need look no further than Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd who created the first black-owned record company in Jamaica.

In similar fashion Alton Ellis's defining 'Black Man's Pride' brings up emotions that are at the heart of many of these uplifting songs. Alton Ellis' birthplace was the Trench Town ghetto of Kingston, also the birthplace of The Wailers, Ken Boothe and many other Studio One luminaries.

Clement Dodd established a musical empire firmly rooted by the core musicians working at Studio One, many of whom came out of the Alpha School for Wayward Boys, essentially an orphanage run by Roman Catholic nuns, whose luminaries include Don Drummond, Johnny Moore, Leroy 'Horsemouth' Wallace, Cedric Brooks, Vin Gordon, Tommy McCook & more.

Many of the songs featured here come from the transitory phase in reggae at the start of the 1970's, after the exhilaration of Ska and following the cooling down of Rocksteady. While reggae awaited the arrival of roots, Studio One's vocalists. Here are 18 heavyweight tunes, both classic cuts and super-rare tunes!

Marvin Gaye - Collected

* 180 gram audiophile vinyl
* Gatefold sleeve
* High quality PVC protective sleeve
* 4 page booklet with liner notes and photos
* A careful selection of tracks, including "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Tammi Terrell, "What's Going' On", "Mercy Mercy Me", "Got To Give It Up", "Sexual Healing" and many more tracks, including duets with Diana Ross, Kim Weston and Mary Wells

Music On Vinyl proudly presents a brand new series of COLLECTED albums. The new albums will focus on memorable artists with almost a life span of original intriguing music, covering a timeless musical period!

Motown released the first Marvin Gaye record in 1961 "(I'm Afraid) The Masquerade Is Over", a single intended for (radio) promotion from the singer's debut album. This was followed up by the officially released "Let Your Conscience Be Your Guide" a week later.

Gaye scored his first real hit with "Stubborn Kind of Fellow" in 1962, which he had co-written himself, joking about his alleged stubbornness. He found his own unique style with the single released at the end of the year: "Hitch Hike". The foundations were now laid for an enormous series of chart successes: "Pride And Joy", "Can I Get A Witness", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)" and "Ain't That Peculiar" are all Motown classics from 1963-1965 which are still being regularly played today after all these years.

The duets he recorded with Kim Weston ("It Takes Two") and especially Tammi Terrell were certainly at least as good. Watching or listening to the Marvin Gaye recording whilst singing "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" with Terrell, you really can't come to any other conclusion than the fact you are looking at a couple who are hopelessly in love and who couldn't wait to consummate their love after they had finishing recording.

He scored his biggest ever hit with "I Heard It Through The Grapevine" in 1968. The "What's Going On" from the same named album became a number 1 hit in the USA and the album was received as a masterpiece everywhere and is now regarded as one of the most important records in pop history.

In 1973, the artistically and commercially very successful, "Let's Get It On" album was mainly a musical ode to Marvin's love for his new muse Janis Hunter.

The success enjoyed by "Sexual Healing" and the album which was released at the end of 1982, travelled with him. Suddenly Gaye, who had started to increasingly be forgotten about, was a celebrated star again and this was certainly a position the singer revelled in.

The pop world lost one of the most important soul singers ever to grace the world on 1st April 1984. He has left behind a series of fantastic hits plus a big handful of tracks which deserve the title of masterpiece, all COLLECTED on this album.

Black Solidarity - String Up The Sound System

In the beginning of the 80's reggae music became increasingly in tune with what was happening in Kingston's dancehalls....probably more so than at any time since the sound system operators had started to make their own shuffle and boogie in the late 50's..
The international audience and the critics were too busy looking for a new Bob Marley to appreciate what was happening downtown and failed to acknowledge that this was a return to the real, raw roots of the music...brash,confidient,young record producers who were totally in tune with the youth audience stepped forward and seized the moment...
Oswald'Ossie'Thomas began his apprenticeship in the music business at the age of fourteen and served his time as a record salesman for Bunny 'Striker 'Lee and Winston 'Niney the Observer' Holness before moving on to Miss Sonia Pottingers Tip Top Records...
'I ended up working in three record stores on Orange Street from 1976 to 1981...Yeah man,Me deh 'pon me bicycle till I buy my motorcycle..Them days records were coming out left right and centre..everyday'
Ossie Thomas...
It was during his time with Miss Pottinger that Ossie began to produce records for himself and in 1979 Ossie and Phillip Morgan began The Black Solidarity label based deep in the Kingston ghetto on Delamere Avenue.
And the man who had made his name in the business selling other people's records now became one of the most important and influential record producers of the era..

Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force - Yermande

Five years into the project, with two acclaimed albums and dozens of triumphant international performances to its name, Yermande announces a thrilling new phase for this Dakar-Berlin collaboration: emphatically a giant step forward. The group of players is boiled down to twelve for recordings, eight for shows, sessions in Dakar become steeply more focussed. 'This time around I was better able to specify what I wanted right from the initial recording sessions in Dakar,' says Ernestus, 'and further in the production process I took more freedom in reducing and editing audio tracks, changing MIDI data, replacing synth sounds and introducing electronic drum samples.Right away you hear music-making which has come startlingly into its own. Rather than submitting to the routine, discrete gradations of recording, producing and mixing, the music is tangibly permeated with deadly intent from the off. Lethally it plays a coiled, clipped, percussive venom and thumping bass against the soaring, open-throated spirituality of Mbene Seck's singing. Plainly expert, drilled and rooted, the drumming is unpredictable, exclamatory, zinging with life. Likewise the production: intuitive and fresh but utterly attentive, limber but hefty, vividly sculpted against a backdrop of cavernous silence. Six chunks of stunning, next-level mbalax, then, funky as anything.Lamb Ji' is traditional wrestling, the most popular sport in Senegal, always introduced by hours of drumming, gris-gris magic and dancing (led by the fighters themselves). Born into the Momori griot clan in Tivaouane, Mbene moved as a teenager to Pikine on the outskirts of Dakar, where the late, great Ndongo Lo was first to invite her to sing at lamb events. Still a hard-core fan, here she pays hommage to all the popular fighters of recent times.Evoking the ancient cultural legacy of the griots, 'Walo Walo' is also the name of the sabar rhythm underlying this track, which features Ibou Mbaye's percussive synth-work, Mangone Ndiaye Dieng's kit-drumming, and Bada Seck's rigorous jolts of lower-pitched thiol drum.
'Simb' ('lion') refers to traditional drumming and dancing events, at which a cavorting 'faux lion' puts the frighteners on audience-members. 'This was most the most difficult one to mix,' recalls Ernestus, 'in the end the most reduced from its recording.'
'Jigeen' means 'woman'. 'Man should know every woman is your mother. Cherish a woman. Respect a woman's dignity. My friend, don't talk bad about a woman. My mother, my father, my family, my friends, it has been hard. Look after the people who were there when you had nothing.A tribute to the Baye Fall leader, Ndiguel is the most traditional cut on the album, showcasing Assane Ndoye Cisse's insinuating guitar lines, Laye Lo's super-elasticated snare-drumming, and Bada Seck playing the khine drums associated with the Baye Fall. (Short and wide, lightweight but low.) Yermande takes a former associate to task. 'Stop prompting the witchdoctor to curse us. Leave people alone and let them go their own way. Take yours, leave ours to us. Don't put anyone down without knowing what their parents have sacrificed. Keep a clean heart and don't wish anyone ill. What you wish for yourself, wish for others. Don't steal my clothes, they don't fit you. Leave badness, life is too short for that.' Like Lamb Ji and Simb, featuring all four sabar players: Bada Seck, Serigne Mamoune Seck, Abou Salla Seck and Alioune Seck. Abdourakhmane Fall's no-flim-flam bass-playing well and truly drops anchor.

MONKEY JHAYAM & ALIEN DREAD - Great Old Men & Dub'/ 'Grandes Guerreiros & Dub

* As we all know, reggae music was created in the Ghettos and has helped many people in their struggle & creating many opportunities for those who worked hard for it. Reggae developed its own alternative industry with the support of sound systems and gave opportunities to so many deejays, toaster and singers. In Brasil, with the rise of sound systems inspired by the UK and JA scene, Monkey Jhayam was one of the first artists to express his art and also build a solid and prominent career alongside many sound systems in his country. Out of São Mateus, Monkey broke barriers and has been collaborating with producers from all over the world with his uplifting Portuguese message.

Kendrick Andy's Roots song 'Great Old Men' lends itself to a new version by the major Brasillian Reggae artist, Monkey Jhayam. The 7 single features back to back versions, both in English (A) and Portugese (B). Rhythm: Alien Dread. The tracks also feature Alvin Davis (Hornz), Asha B (Congos & Percussion) and Rhythm/Lead Guitar by Steven 'Marley' Wright.

Various - Two Niles to Sing a Melody: The Violins & Synths of Sudan

16

In Sudan, the political and cultural are inseparable. In 1989, a coup brought a hardline religious government to power. Music was violently condemned. Many musicians and artists were persecuted, tortured, forced to flee into exile — and even murdered, ending one of the most beloved music eras in all of Africa and largely denying Sudan's gifted instrumentalists, singers, and poets, from strutting their creative heritage on the global stage.

What came before in a special era that protected and promoted the arts was one of the richest music scenes anywhere in the world. Although Sudanese styles are endlessly diverse, this compilation celebrates the golden sound of the capital, Khartoum. Each chapter of the cosmopolitan city's tumultuous musical story is covered through 16 tracks: from the hypnotic violin and accordion-driven orchestral music of the 1970s that captured the ears and hearts of Africa and the Arabic-speaking world, to the synthesizer and drum machine music of the 1980s, and the music produced in exile in the 1990s. The deep kicks of tum tum and Nubian rhythms keep the sound infectious.

Sudan of old had music everywhere: roving sound systems and ubiquitous bands and orchestras kept Khartoum's sharply dressed youth on their feet. Live music was integral to cultural life, producing a catalog of concert recordings. In small arenas and large outdoor venues, musical royalty of the day built Khartoum's reputation as ground zero for innovation and technique that inspired a continent.

Musicians in Ethiopia and Somalia frequently point to Sudan's biggest golden era stars as idols. Mention Mohammed Wardi — a legendary Sudanese singer and activist akin to Fela Kuti in stature and impact in his music and politics — and they often look to the heavens. A popular story is of one man from Mali who walked for three months across the Sahel to Sudan because the father of the woman he wanted to marry would only allow it if he got him a signed cassette from Wardi himself. Saied Khalifa is said to be the one of the few singers to make Ethiopian emperor Haile Selassie smile.

Such is the stature of Sudanese singers and the reputation of Sudanese music, particularly in the "Sudanic Belt," a cultural zone that stretches from Djibouti all the way west to Mauritania, covering much of the Sahara and the Sahel, lands where Sudanese artists are household names and Sudanese poems are regularly used as lyrics until today to produce the latest hits. Sudanese cassettes often sold more in Cameroon and Nigeria than at home.

But years of anti-music sentiment have made recordings in Sudan difficult to source. Ostinato's team traveled to Ethiopia, Somalia, Djibouti, and Egypt in search of the timeless cultural artifacts that hold the story of one of Africa's most mesmerizing cultures. That these cassette tape and vinyl recordings were mainly found in Sudan's neighbors is a testament to Sudanese music's widespread appeal.

With our Sudanese partner and co-compiler Tamador Sheikh Eldin Gibreel, a once famous poet and actress in '70s Khartoum, Ostinato's fifth album, following our Grammy-nominated "Sweet As Broken Dates," revives the enchanting harmonies, haunting melodies, and relentless rhythms of Sudan's brightest years, fully restored, remastered and packaged luxuriously in a triple LP gatefold and double CD bookcase to match the regal repute of Sudanese music.
A 20,000-word liner note booklet gives voice to the singers silenced by an oppressive regime.

Take a sail down the Blue and White Nile as they pass through Khartoum, carrying with them an ancient history and a never-ending stream of poems and songs. It takes two Niles to sing a melody.

Ghost Writerz - They Wanna Know / Dancehall Dub

Repress

London's Ghost Writerz are back with a banger! Following a slew of releases on Tru Thoughts and a recent mixtape "Welcome To Ghost Town" heating up the streets, Jimmy Screech and Sleepy Time Ghost return with a big splash on NICE UP! Records. Based around a familiar reggae riddim, the track tells the tale of Jimmy's foundation in soundsystem culture, starting in the 80s and name-checking legends such as Shabba Ranks, Yellowman, Smiley Culture along the way. As the riddim flips we shift forward a generation, 90s dancehall and rap dominate, giving props to hip hop royalty such as Busta Rhymes and 2Pac, then finally firing off a huge jungle climax, dripping in enough amen breaks to set the dancefloor alight whilst giving a little history of the musical heritage behind Ghost Writerz.

Care in the Community recordings release a 7" single of Lark's Can I Colour In Your Hair featuring a flip side dub version by renowned DJ and producer Andrew Weatherall, adding to past re-workings of Lark songs by artists such as Scritti Politti's Green Gartside, Erol Alkan and producer Brendan Lynch (Primal Scream).
The label released Lark's first two albums; the 'sharp and clever' (Quietus) debut ,Shop, and the  purely solo effort of song writer and front man Karl Bielik, I Don't Got, which Uncut noted  '...throws up myriad references - Daniel Johnston, Tom Waits' junkyard jazz, early Human League - but the wonky, unsettling world it creates is completely Bielik's own.' (4/5).
Can I Colour In Your Hair dates from the period that formed Lark's debut and was always intended for its own vinyl cut. While the Andrew Weatherall version that followed, a while later, featured in his BBC6 music 6 mix and gained traction in his club sets, the physical record has proved elusive until now.

The Chosen Brothers - Sing & Shout

A fresh iteration of the mid-eighties LP (itself a compilation of recordings from the previous five years or so), replacing two tracks — Dancing In The Rain and All Things — with their full 12' versions. This is a deeply personable, expert, limber blend of roots and lovers, kicking off with an exclusive mix of the deadly Mash Down Babylon; dropping classic, lush, spaced-out Wackies dub science to close; and taking in reworkings of Lickshot, Billie Jean and The Righteous Flames' I Was Born To Be Loved, along the route. The moniker 'Chosen Brothers' is Lloyd Barnes' spiritual way of sharing the credit for his solo projects. "Anyone in the studio at the time could be a Chosen Brother,' he says. In this case a full crew includes Sugar Minott and Prince Douglas at the desk; Jah Batta, Milton Henry, Wayne Jarrett and Junior Delahaye all on backing vocals; and such dream-team Bullwackies instrumentalists as Clive Hunt, Jerry Johnson, Fabian Cooke and Ras Menelik.
