Les Pythons De La Fournaise - Slp!

Exquisit Franco-Creole supergroup Les Pythons de la Fournaise (named after the great volcano on the Reunion island) are rewarding us with their 2nd effort, "Salut Les Pythons !".

More songs, more groove, more emotion in this exciting long-player where the band show they not only can compose amazing tracks and develop their interpretation of classic Sega-Lontan (typical music genre from Reunion, Mauritius and surrounding islands), but also open their sound to broader, yet specific influences, ranging from 60's/70's psychedelia to Eastern harmonies or African rhythms. In this LP the work on vocals is stunning, the 2-female duet in "Maloya Ton Tisane" is a delight, as well as Reunion-native Rene Cadet's emotion in songs like "Pardon" .

The combination between percussion and drums is extremely tight, yet supple and true to the unique groove of Sega music. Tracks like "Ton Ti Gueul Rose" are a pure expression of the band's inventivity - merciless Arp synthesizer and electric guitar galopping through a frenetic rhythm.

Produced by the Catapulte team, this LP also benefits from a beautiful screen-printed artwork with a hand- glued photograph, different for each Vinyl copy - a unique object!

Tala A.m. - African Funk Experimentals 1975 To 1978 Cd

Tala AM (or Tala Andre Marie to give him his full and proper name) was born in Bandjoun in Cameroun in 1950. Talas life initially wasn't easy, he becomes blind at an early age and has lost both his mother and father by the age of 12. He then went on to make his first guitar by hand and form his first band "The Rock Boys" by the age of 17. Shortly after he meets the powerhouse of Camerounian music at the time Manu Dibango, a pivotal moment. With help, he re-locates to Paris and signs a contract with Fiesta Records. The first fruit of those labours is his debut album "Hot Koki".

The lead track (and highlight of this compilation) is "Hot Koki" it is a powerhouse of funk guitar, soul and infectious afro rhythms. Fast forward to 1974 and the famous "Rumble In The Jungle" fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The story goes a little something like this... At an accompanying musical event we find James Brown and Tala AM. JB Hears Hot Koki and creates a remarkably similar sounding track "The Hustle" (check it out side by side if you have the time).

Fast forward another 40 years. Time to take a look back on the funkier moments of Tala. This is not a "best of" Tala, that has already been done. Want to get into Tala's famous Tchamassi sound or do some "bend skin" beats... well check out the other compilations. Here at Africa Seven (and in this case) we are headed for destination funk. The musical topic inevitably leads us to the 70's and we borrow our super slick source material mainly from the albums Tala made for Fiesta Records from 1973 to 1978.

We open up the bombastic brass, swinging basslines and all out groove of Hot Koki (well after a little intro ditty gem). Then its on to the one of the highlights of "Arabia" album "Black Gold". This track swoons groove. Layers of picked and choppy guitar and on point drumming. "Sugar Lump" is next which sticks to the formula of the previous track but adds in catchy vocals.

Mining into the cave of delights that is the 1978 "Black Woman" album we then follow up with the driving afro beat grooves and stabby brass of "Gotam" and the boogie flowing grooves of "Black Woman" and the frenetic and driving grooves of "Ma Ka La". We round things off with the stabby clavi-funk of "Nom Te Ma" and the ultimate groovy funk-riff closer (and ear worm) Tcham Tcham.

So there you some slices of pure funk from a master. Tala's role of awards and achievements is long and impressive (check his Wikipedia), Knight of Valour of Cameroun, SACEM awards and his opening of a music school in Douala... However.. we feel these musical masterpieces are right up there with his finest achievements.. A true man of music.

Flox - Homegrown

Homegrown

12inch128971
Echo Beach
24.06.2016

Various - Inna Nice Up! Fashion Cd

Undoubtedly one of the most iconic and legendary reggae labels to come out of the UK,Fashion Records has a rich and deep history that reaches far beyond the world of reggae. The brainchild of John MacGillivray and Chris Lane, two music devotees who started the Dub Vendor market stall in Clapham Junction selling imported reggae and dub vinyl during the late 70s (which later went on to spawn the hugely popular Dub Vendor shops), a dub cutting studio and label was set up in 1980 and started generating hits instantly, regularly topping the UK reggae charts and attracting attention further afield. Soon a recording studio was built, which served as a drop-in for most of the Jamaican stars passing through London at the time.

Horace Andy, Johnnie Clarke, Alton Ellis, Frankie Paul, Junior Delgado and many more household names all spent time in the A-Class studios during the early days, although it was the stars of the new UK reggae explosion that really put the label on the map. Alongside artists such as Dee Sharp, Keith Douglas, Papa Face & Bionic Rhona, the label was a springboard for talents such as Asher Senator, Macka B,Andrew Paul and Smiley Culture, the latter scoring a top 20 hit and a couple of appearances on Top Of The Pops with his 1984 single "Police Officer".

Going from strength to strength, it was the chart explosion of dancehall in the early 90s that saw more international names come flocking to the label and more hits racking up - far too many to list here, but a brief glance through the discography shows Cutty Ranks, Papa San, General Levy, Top Cat, Tenor Fly, Daddy Freddy and Wayne Wonder all recording sides for the label. Subsequently another more uniquely English style of dance music began using acapella samples from the label, jungle. Based around the soundsystem style of Jamaican music, with an emphasis on the cutting drums and heavy basslines, young jungle producers used many of the tracks recorded and played by the previous generation as the music's backbone, the vocals given new life by the rudimentary samplers being used in bedroom studios all over the land.

Fast forward 25 years and those reverberations are still being felt today - drum & bass, dubstep, hip hop, trap and almost any other sub-genre of what many now refer to as "bass music" has the DNA of reggae and dancehall running through it, so its only right to expect a little payback. A&R'd by music fanatic and owner of the NICE UP! record label, Jon Sheppard - "Inna NICE UP! Fashion" aims to bring new life to some of these legendary tracks by having modern day producers rework them in their own style and re-introduce them to a new audience. From the frantic breakbeats of rave-revivalistSpecial Request and the bottom end sonics of Radio 1's Toddla T & Melé, to the modern minimalist dancehall-tech of Machinedrum and the digital dub drone of The Bug, there is plenty to get excited about here. Poland's Radikal Guru serves up some classic dubstep, Germany's Jahtari crew take it back into 80s nostalgia with their 8-bit dancehall style, whilst modern reggae producers Wrongtom, Jstar and Mr Benn all show why they are on the forefront of the UK reggae revival. The tempo gets upped for some heavier jungle inspired remixes from Aries & Gold Dubs, Serial Killaz and festival favourites Dub Pistols, giving a little bit of something for everybody.

Various - Tanbou Toujou Lou: Meringue, Kompa Kreyol, Vodou Jazz, And Electric Folklore From Haiti 1960-1981 Cd

Selected from an array of private collections and radio archives in Brooklyn, New York, and multiple digging trips in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Gonaives, and St. Marc, are twenty tracks that encompass the vast diversity of styles during the seminal years of musical innovation and percussive potency in Haiti. From the legendary, elegant big band dance parties in iconic nightclubs of Port-au-Prince to the rhythms of the countryside, from accordion-driven meringue and Vodou-derived drum patterns, to hypnotic tenor sax arrangements and psychedelic interpretations of folklore, the music of 1960's, '70's, & '80's Haiti enjoys a royal repute across the Caribbean, West Africa, and the Colombian coast.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, experimentation and electric reinterpretation of traditional rhythms was rife, along with the sophisticated balancing of a host of influences. There's the jazz-era instrumentation, brought during the early 20th century American occupation, which introduced horn sections to Haitian ensembles. Cuba, cultural imperator of the Afro-Atlantic and perennial ally of Haiti, imbued Meringue, Mambo, Son, Guajira, Charanga, and a slew of Afro-Cuban styles into the Haitian repertoire. Accordion-driven Colombian Cumbia and Dominican Merengue left their mark. A melting pot of sound was all held together by the countless rhythms, drum patterns, and percussion brought across the Atlantic from Africa, surviving slavery's violent cultural repression.

Nago rhythms from what is today Nigeria and Benin, Kongo rhythms from Central Africa, and Petwo rhythms from the Vodou traditions of Guinea, among many others, were revived and given special importance in an age of black consciousness, driven by the Negritude and Noiriste philosophies of Afro-Caribbean intellectuals like Jamaica's Marcus Garvey and Martinique's Frantz Fanon.

The lasting result is a rich, layered terrine that spawned Haiti's Cuban-inspired Meringue, the dominant Kompa Direct of Nemours Jean Baptiste, the silky tenor sax-led Cadence Rampa pioneered by Webert Sicot, psychedelic Mini Jazz, and the dancefloor-filling Vodou Jazz compositions of de-facto national orchestra, Super Jazz de Jeunes. At its peak, Haitian music was widely distributed, proliferating its unique blend of sound across the Francophone Caribbean and West Africa.

Recordings capturing this vibrant laboratory of colliding influences were produced and pressed in Haiti, the United States, France, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Huge catalogs from the heavyweight record labels of the time-IBO Records, Marc Records, and Mini Records-and the smaller, private presses have largely been gathering dust and bugs, left to warp in the damp humidity..., until now.

Accompanied by a 20 page liner note booklet with vintage photographs mined across Haiti and its vast diaspora, an essay by a scholar of traditional Haitian Vodou rhythms at the School of Arts in Port au Prince, a history of the Haitian sound, and interviews with key figures of the forgotten scene, the compilation will be available on a gatefold LP, CD, and digital formats.

Voodoocuts & Soulbrigada - Matasuna Records Pres. Afreaka!

Voodoocuts kicks off the A-Side with 'Kelja', a raw 70s afro-funk bomb from the Ivory Coast. The American-funk inspired tune features a funky bassline & killer organ vibe, mingled with a dirty, raw saxophone line and James Brown influenced vocals. Voodoocuts' rework turns the track into a serious dancefloor banger! In 'The Tortoise Loop' Voodoocuts blends an infectious groove with pounding drum breaks and hypnotic vocals. A hot afro-latin joint not to be missed!

On the flip SoulBrigada takes things to a disco tip. 'Hustleman' is a stunning afrofunk & disco gem from West Africa. The second track 'Madera' is an afro-disco gem with a compelling Cape Verdean groove. SoulBrigada rearranged the tracks, added drums, samples and effects building a brigde between past and present - without ever losing its original organic vibe. Two essential tunes for your record bag!

Grand Ancestor presents our fifth release, featuring 'No Harm', a sound system weapon from American bass warrior Malleus. Despite it's name, this A side will damage speakers and steal the air from dance floors with it's serious bass weight. The track goes in with a triplet shuffle rhythm and a mosaic of perfectly treated samples and sounds, weaving a sonic spell. We reached to Japan for the remix, and enlisted Part2Style to flip the original with a truly unique and inspiring interpretation. This record is worthy of the rinse! No repress, vinyl only.

Interrupt - We Rule The Dance (feat. Tenor Youthman)

Now on their twenty-eighth release of forward thinking UK Reggae music, Reggae Roast continue with hit after hit. This release definitely follows suit, having already done the rounds on dubplate for many months and set alight dances all over the world. They've signed up one of the top up and coming UK producers, Interrupt, and one of the best new MC's on the scene, Tenor Youthman.

'We Rule The Dance' is a deep & heavy baseline bubbler, built to test any soundsys- tem! It's a contemporary reimagining of the 80's digital style pioneered by King Jammyas well as Steelie & Cleevie, which is accentuated by Tenor Youthman's 'Nitty Gritty'vocal stylings. Full to the brim with soundclash lyrics, authentic Casio keyboard licks and airhorns this release is sure to set any dancehall alight.

Interrupt is relatively new to the scene and only starting producing in 2012, however his take on the digital Reggae style of the late 1980's is some of the best there is. Now based in London, Interrupt continues to provide his own individual upbeat vibe, which features old-school drum machines, bold basslines and colourful synthesizers. Having worked with Speng Bong, Cubiculo Records and Spanish singers Ponchita Peligros& George Palmer, he already has significant hits under his belt and shows no signs of slowing down.

Russian sound system pioneer, singjay and producer, Tenor Youthman, has dedicated his life to the power of the Reggae. A disciple of the Hill & Gully' style, made famous byTenor Saw amongst others, Youthman brings a message of love & conscious living through his music. Using his in-depth knowledge of Reggae & Soundsystem culture Tenor provides distinctive energy & style to everything he's involved with and is fast be- coming one of the most in-demand mic men in the world.

Reggae Roast is building a formidable catalogue featuring some of the most exciting artists in the UK and beyond. Key players in the resurgence of the UK Roots scene over the past 5 years, they are a leading light in the new generation of dub music. Look out for plenty more releases in the 2016 from the likes of Vibration Lab, Adam Prescott, Brother Culture and many more.

The Sound Of Young Jamaica - More Early Cuts From The Vaults Of Studio One 1959-63

This is the second collection to bring together many of the visionary producer Clement 'Sir Coxsone' Dodd's early recordings made with Jamaica's most exciting young artists and musicians who helped define the world of reggae music over the decades following Jamaican Independence. These recordings were made when Sir Coxsone ruled the dancehalls of Kingston in the late 1950s and early 1960s with his number one Downbeat Sound System, where songs were tested out on dub plates at a dance to see a crowd's reaction - the most popular of which were then released commercially. Featuring early material by Roland Alphonso, Don Drummond, Tommy McCook (all of whom would form The Skatalites), Toots and The Maytals, young singers such as Bob Marley and The Wailers, Delroy Wilson, Owen Gray all captured in their formative days. The music here spans a wealth of styles - Jamaican rhythm and blues, jazz, gospel, proto-ska, Rastafarian - all of which were drawn upon to create the future sounds of Jamaican reggae that Sir Coxsone and the artists featured would soon create at Studio One which opened its doors in 1963. This collection is released on heavyweight triple-vinyl plus download code and double CD with slipcase. Sleevenotes and text is by the author Noel Hawks.

Zozo / Esper Scout - International Waters / Gaps In The Border Fence
  • A1: International Waters
  • B1: Gaps In The Border Fence

Talking about 'International Waters', Jack Trotman of ZoZo had this to say: 'International Waters' is technically one of our oldest songs. It's gone through many formations since the band started in my bedroom with Fred and Tom. Back then (2014) 'The ZoZo Band' was me on electric drums, Fred on bass and Tom on guitar. The original version of the song was called 'Learn Origami' and was written by accident when trying to write a guitar part for another song. We were wearing our influences on our sleeves very clearly...well more like on our backs like a footie shirt. That shirt would read 'How many Talking Heads songs have we ever ripped off - 99'

Says Sarah Statham of Esper Scout about the band's inclusion in the series: 'We've known about Come Play With Me since the announcement of the label's first release last year. There's such a sense of community in Leeds and an endearing, connecting underdog spirit, to which in ways we can really relate. CPWM seems to understand this and want to help how they can. That's something we really respect and have been keen to work with. There's a refreshing sense of honesty. You know so through what they say and do that their excitement and investment in furthering emerging music is simmering at its core. The concept of seeing potential in a band or person and using experience and enthusiasm to help lever them into what they do next is highly admirable. Positive collaboration and amassing good intentions are symptoms of Leeds about which the city should be proud. Keeping substance and soul at the centre of people motivations for why they play, promote and support music.'

Resonators - Healer

Healer

7"-VinylWAH7056
Wah Wah 45s
05.04.2019

Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the first single to be taken from the hugely anticipated new album from arguably the UK's finest dub and reggae outfit, Resonators.

After a four year hiatus - mostly spent tirelessly performing at headline shows and festivals across the UK and Europe, as well as recording a plethora of new music - this almost peerless Brighton-based collective are ready to showcase their new material to an eager public.

Always thinking outside of the box, Healer started life as a psych rock tune, but somehow transformed into a beautiful piece of reggae music, whilst still retaining much of the original feel. It's a song about young love and the resurgence of a friendship in adult life. The Healer character shows us that no matter how tough the present can be, we can always look to old friends for strength - the bonds of youth can last forever.

Filled with gorgeous close harmonies, the original vocal version is a life-affirming slice of sultry summertime music, but for those who like their dub there's always the deeper, effect-heavy version on the flip!

Healer will be released digitally, and on very limited hand-stamped 7" vinyl (signed by the whole band) on June 3rd. The new album, Imaginary People, is due to drop in September.

In 1971, despite his run of hits, Bunny Lee was still having to support himself with freelance producing at Dynamic Sounds,

but by 1974 he was fully independent and poised to dominate Jamaican music in the mid 70's.

The tracks on this compilation capture that moment of transition, when the smaller ghetto producers were taking over from the older musical establishment.

Listening to Bunny's unreleased master tapes, what bursts out of the speakers is the energy and excitement of the whole production process,

from the studio chatter of the musicians to the sonic experiments at the mixing desk.

These pioneering steps in deejaying and dub were the launch pad for remix culture and the core production techniques of today,

a creative explosion that altered the shape of our popular culture. In the words of I Roy, 'Striker Lee, him have the key!'
