Daniel Grau - Reworks Vol.2 (by Box Aus Holz)

After Daniel Wang and Jules Etienne set the bar very high with their remixes for - Robot Magico' and - Disco Fantasy' by Daniel Grau (SK280), it's now time for the next three songs by the forgotten Venezuelan Cosmic Disco producer to come under the knife. With his debut - Rivers Of The Red Planet' (just out on Tartelet Records) 21-year-old Berlin based Max Graef is making massive waves right now across all borders. Still he found a slot in his busy schedule to enhance three songs out of Daniel Grau's elusive archive - together with befriended DJs/producers from the Oye Records entourage. Upgrading all of them in a state-of-the-art cutting-edge fashion.
That's how - Tren Del Espacio' (originally released on the 1978 album - El Sonido Magico De Daniel Grau') suddenly becomes a straight forward slamming house track with added Caribbean spice mid-in. A completely different approach is applied by Graef and Labuzinski on the remix for - Nunca Conocí Amor Igual' (of the album - 440 Toker' from 1982). The vocals by Laurye McGregor are stifled by a menacing dubsteppy killer beat and only slosh to daylight occasionally. An impressive and aweinspiring deconstruction maybe also Madlib or The Alchemist would come up
with if stuffed with enough medication. Make sure you serve this cold!
And then there's the collaboration of Graef with Oye Records honcho Markus Lindner aka Delfonic. Also with this remix of - Delirio En Fa Menor' (off the 1976 LP - Mas Alla De Las Estrellas') you can literally feel the affinity towards what we used to call leftfield hiphop. A badass beat framework binds the ever collapsing samples of the original. It's like Graef and Delfonic hold a picture of the original tune in their hands and then tearing it in half, just to piece it back together again back-to-front. This is adulteration by permission. Or to put it in another way: This is how you get away with
murder. Another milestone in Max Graef's still juvenile career!

David & Ruben, The Majestics - It Hurts Me

'(I Love Her So Much) It Hurts Me' was first recorded by the Robles Brothers (Arthur, David and Ruben) in 1965 and issued on Linda Records (Linda 121) as THE MAJESTICS. The song was written by Arthur Robles, and co-produced by Eddie Davis and Max Uballez, The Romancers provided the foundation for an interesting arrangement that featured the Ralph Ventura Mariachi Band. Davis leased the song to Warner Bros. (WB 7316) for a second chance hit, crediting it to David & Ruben (Robles), the two versions are identical apart from the horn section which is missing from the start of the David & Ruben pressings. Unfortunately it failed to crossover, but undaunted, Davis gave it a third and final spin in 1969, again attributed to David & Ruben, but this time on the Rampart logo (662).

The Mighty Sceptres - All Hail The Mighty Sceptres!

All Hail The Mighty Sceptres! boldly announces the arrival of the band and is also the rightful title of their debut album. Nick Radford and Angeline Morrison have crafted an extraordinary collection of songs showcasing their love of all things "Soul", from funk, R&B, jazz, and doo-wop with just a bit of rock, all informed by the sound and attitude of the '60s.

Already accomplished artists in their own right and having been guests on each others records, the "magic" between Nick and Angeline is fully manifested in "The Mighty Sceptres" as Angeline describes it,"The collaborative element of 'All Hail The Mighty Sceptres' has been really inspiring. Nick and I have had the chance to focus together on writing and arranging, and though we've co-written many songs previously, this was a new level of freedom and responsibility for us."

Getting the "right sound", from the writing through to the recording, engineering, production, mixing and mastering, is of paramount importance to the music of The Mighty Sceptres. By enlisting the help of Chris Pedley (The Baker Brothers) as a producer who in turn brought in Benedic Lamdin (Nostalgia 77) to help him with the final mix of the album, they were able to achieve just that. According to Nick "I think we were all on the same page as far as 'the sound' we were after was concerned, coming from a similar place musically. From the recording (where Kryzsystof Oktalski helped out with signal chains and mic'ing things up), mixing down to tape in the remarkably well equipped Fish Market studios (using the same MCI desk Willie Mitchell used at Hi Records, and an EMT140 plate reverb, among other equipment), through to the final mastering by the well respected Lewis Hopkin; I don't think we have ever used so much authentic equipment, never mind worked with such talent, in the creation of an album!

Stand out tracks include the killer funk stomper "I Found The Letter" and the string-laden, R&B uptempo ballad "Shy As A Butterfly". .

Look for their debut full-length album dropping in 2014!

The Supremes - Your Heart Belongs To Me / On Air Interview With Brian Matthew

THE SUPREMES would go on to become Motown's most successful act but back in the summer of '62 they had to settle for No.95 in the Billboard Hot 100 with their 4th release as The Supremes and the first to be penned by Smokey Robinson. It was also their first record to chart, putting an end to their unfortunate Hitsville pet name... the 'no-hit Supremes.
On the flip side we feature a short 'on-air' radio interview from the original BBC radio series Top Gear, produced by Bernie Andrews and hosted by Brian Matthew. The Supremes introduce themselves and talk about the Apollo.

Cookin' On 3 Burners - This Girl

Cookin' On 3 Burners join the dots between soul, funk, boogaloo & jazz. Long time partners Lance Ferguson (guitar), Ivan Khatchoyan (drums) and Jake Mason (organ) have taken their home brew of soulful sounds everywhere from major jazz festivals to intimate, after hours bars and clubs across the southern hemisphere.

Taken from the band's album 'Soul Messin', the 45 This Girl features renowned Aussie songstress Kylie Auldist (renowned for her work with The Bamboos, Polyester & Mega Bias) who joins forces with the boys and provides the focus for this mellow, beautiful and incredibly catchy song. Shimmering horns ride over this laid back, deep soul classic which has been one of Freestyle Records' most popular 45s since Summer 2009!

The flipside Four n Twenty is an instrumental club killer, a deep groove you wont want to climb out of.

Gay Poppers - I Want To Know / You Got Me Up Tight

THE GAY POPPERS were a doo-wop quintet from New York who first caught our attention in 1960 with 'You Better Believe' on Savoy. A label hop to Bobby Robinson's Fire imprint saw two releases: 'I Want To Know' (Fire 1026) and 'You Got Me Up Tight' (Fire 1039), both featured here, for the first time in over 50 years.

Little Stevie Wonder, Bob Kayli - Contract On Love / Tie Me Tight

LITTLE STEVIE WONDER cut six singles for Tamla before losing the 'Little' moniker. 'Contract On Love' was his first serious Hitsville production following the novelty flop 'Little Water Boy' in December 1962. The distinctive hand-clap beat that announces the dance track would be recycled to great effect on The Supremes' 1964 hit 'Where Did Our Love Go'.

BOB KAYLI, aka Robert Gordy, is the younger brother of Motown boss Berry Gordy. 'Tie Me Tight' was written by Robert and marked his first recording for the company, which also features The Supremes on backing vocals.

Dynamic Duke Royal - I Wanna Know 7"

What we do here at Tramp Records is to (re-)release music that we love, no matter if it is in-demand or not. What is most important to us is the high-quality level of each release. And so we decided to put out many 45rpm single re-issues of tunes which are not sought after but outstanding, at least to our ears. Here is another little known beauty which hopefully gets the attention after more than 40 years since its first release.

You can find the detailed story about Dynamic Duke Royal in the liner notes of the wonderful Movements Vol.6 compilation (Tramp TR-9031). Go and get it, it's worth it!

A long established classic of the Deep Funk genre, the Marlboro Men's 'Iron Horse' has been filling dance floors and appearing on wants lists for many a year. As such it's surely long overdue a 45 reissue as is, but what makes this release really special and essential for any funk collector is the inclusion on the flip side of the previously unreleased instrumental version of 'Iron Horse', appearing here for the first time as taken from the original, 40 year old master tapes.

Amongst their fans, there are folks like David Rodigan and the legendary late lamented Lloyd Knibb (The Skatalites).

The Bluebeaters lands on RK with two brand new tracks "Toxic (one drop version)" and "Catch That Teardrop". Produced by The Bluebeaters and mixed by Tommaso Colliva (Calibro 35) at Toomi Labs studio in London, this double-sider 45 features a storming early Jamaican cover up version, of pop single Toxic by Britney Spears (yes that Toxic!) able to set every dancefloor on fire. On the flip side the band keeps the pressure very high, bringing back to JA roots, Catch That Teardrop, a Northern soul/R&b single originally recorded in 1962 by The Five Royales from Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Various - The Funky Side Of Goldband/anla Records

23

Goldband Records played a key role in documenting and shaping of musical traditions, tastes, and trends, both regionally and internationally since 1944. The focus of the Goldband catalog is certainly set on Country & Western, Swamp Pop, and Cajun music. However, from the 1960s until the early 1970s Goldband, and it's sub-label ANLA Records, released many high-quality Soul and Rhythm & Blues recordings. Simply put, Shuler had an ear for talent. He always believed in "...;giving a man a chance; otherwise, how would you discover what somebody could do" That was the guiding philosophy and the secret to the success of Goldband Records.

Born March 27, 1913 in Wrightsboro, Texas, Eddie Shuler moved to Lake Charles in 1942 to work as a dragline operator. He found additional part-time work in a music store, leading him into a career in the music business. He then joined the country, western swing, and Cajun group The Hackberry Ramblers. Having sharpened his musical skills, he left the group to form his own band, The Reveliers.

24.11.2014

O.B.E. Vol. 1 is Breezy Lovejoy's (which was the name Anderson Paak was using back then) debut release. Originally released in 2012 it was one of our favorite releases that year. Since then we have been following Paak's releases closely and ended up becoming die hard fans. His ability to effortlessly tie together Soul, Hip Hop, R&B and a whole lotta other influences sets him apart from a lot of artists out there. He sings, he raps, he produces, he plays drums, his live shows are incredible.

We knew at some point this needed to see a vinyl release and after meeting Anderson in Berlin last weekend during his 70 city world tour with Watsky, whose album he produced, we knew this time had come. A classic in the making. Hopefully we'll also release some other releases from his catalogue on vinyl sometime soon.

Brownout - Presents Brown Sabbath

Brown Sabbath is the alter ego of Austin-based Brownout, delving into the catalog of the Hard Rock and Heavy Metal godfathers themselves Black Sabbath. The album features several covers of Sabbath classics including "Iron Man", "N.I.B" and "Hand Of Doom" with Black Angels singer Alex Maas.

Remaining true to the darkness, bombast and fuzz of Sabbath's sound, Brownout reinvents the music with their trademark flavors of Latin-Funk and Psychedelic Rock. Powerful horns combined with Alex Maas' haunting vocals, funked-up drums and percussion transform "Hand Of Doom" into a Rock and Funk juggernaut that clocks in at almost 8 minutes long. Alex Marrero takes his turn on the vocals and channels his inner Ozzy Osbourne on "The Wizard" and "N.I.B". Deep, hypnotic percussion combined with a full horn section and Adrian Quesada's heavy yet groovy lead guitar layered on top adds a funk sensibility and Latin flourishes to the originals throughout the album.

An 8-piece outfit formed ten years ago by members of Grammy Award-winning Latin revival orchestra Grupo Fantasma, Brownout has evolved into a musical force all its own. After garnering their third Austin Music Award last year, the band has continued to produce music that is unflinchingly progressive, while evoking the classic influences of artists such as WAR, Cymande and Funkadelic.

18.11.2014

Pulshar return to Desolat with another stunning long player filled with a selection of sumptuous productions that further demonstrate their grasp over intimate and deeply ethereal electronic music. Vinyl version of 'Blood and Mathematics' features the originals and instrumentals via download code, and is perfectly timed for when the days begin to draw to a close. Barcelona based duo Sergio S. Vidal and Pablo Bolivar have cemented the Pulshar name and reputation as proponents of dub-heavy, soulful and at times psychedelic electronic music. Their first Desolat long player 'Inside' received critical acclaim and effortlessly bridged the gap between the dance-floor and the home listening environment. They returned to Desolat in 2013 with a deliciously deep and trippy EP in 'Different Drum', and now continue their relationship with the label with 'Blood and Mathematics'. Pulshar continue their affair with Electro, Instrumental Hip-Hop, Dub and Psychedelia. They have distilled this to create a distinctive and soulful brand of electronic music and the new Long Player represents where the artists are in 2014. All the tracks are written and produced by them, with only Guti as a featuring artist on 'Running Away'. This has resulted in them cultivating a traditional 'album' experience where one track effortlessly segues into the next and takes the listener through a range of emotions across the record. Blood and Mathematics is a contemporary electronic music listening experience that will be revisited again and again.

10.11.2014

Having started and performed in several vocal groups since high school, Jimmy Lynch became one of the most influental black comedians on planet earth. During his long career, which still continues to this day, he adapted the "Funky Tramp" and "Mr. Motion" character to vinyl, selling hundred thousands copies of his multiple comedy albums throughout years. Beside being a recording artist, Lynch also appeared in some movies of his longtime friend, legendary comedian, Rudy Ray Moore such as Dolomite (1975), The Human Tornado (1976), and Petey Wheatstraw: The Devil's Son-In-Law (1977).

Notions of Mr. Motion and On Broadway were originally released back-to-back on 45rpm single on the LaVal label in the late 1960s. The quality paired with the rarity made us to go for this official re-issue. We hope you agree with us.

The Blue Bottles - Come To This

The Blue Bottles were founded by guitarist Matt Taylor, drummer Stephen Russell and bassist Dan Lott in 2011. The concept being to play no-nonsense heavily percussive raw funk, aimed directly at the dance floor but with songs and melodies that will lodge in the skull and refuse to jettison.

Fast forward to 2014 with numerous gigs under the belt (and now swelled in size to 6 members) and the band decamped to record 13 tracks - all live in one room in one day - including these two featured tracks. A healthy dollop of sonic fairy dust was then sprinkled all over the mix by leading UK funk producer Lack Of Afro. A number of these tracks, all as yet unreleased, have been getting heavy rotation on BBC Radio 2's Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show.

The band have a shared love for all the great 60/70s funk classics - Lee Dorsey, James Brown, Betty Davis, and so many others. But don't mistake The Blue Bottles for a retro styled bunch of suit wearing imitators - with a diverse range of musical tastes and backgrounds, the band have been variously described as 'The MC5 playing funk'.

Kinglman - Vultures Bazaarb Feat. Earl 16/the Mighty Zulu Nation Abantu (lv Raw Remix)

Fun-Da-Mental DJ/Vocalist D.WattsRiot, presents KingLMan. The name, cloaked in a sense of humour to ease the pain of around-the-clock slaps in the face, kicks on the shins of man. Another voice of discontent amongst the majority of minions. Exploration of self and community using the tools at hand, words and sounds. ´Vultures Bazaar´ features the soulful Earl 16 (Studio One) taking aim at the 'current(cy) situation', the globalitarian power-play of bone-crushing economics dressed in democratic fervour. Delivering a voice of reason on a cut-up culture rhythm; built with shards of sounds from reality and make-believe, since in these times, the two are indistinguishable from one another. High frequency percussive shrapnel, digital static messages to and from the frontline barricades. The vinyl release allows for an exclusive outing by The Mighty Zulu Nation to see the day. 'Abantu' remixed by LV propelled by a beat of considerable size and dive-bombing synth-lines reinforcing the majestic voices of the 12-strong choir from Durban, South Africa. 'Abantu' was originally produced by Fun-Da-Mental´s Aki Nawaz. The video takes the issue back to the source, filmed in the City of London, aka The Square Mile, the financial heart of UK-led exploitation. Filmed on bare streets, representing the void of compassion and humanity that resides, celebrates and fornicates there. Edited by Alejandro Oñate. Camera, DWR.

2x12"

GL are Melbourne's cosmic-funk revivalists and the soundtrack to eternal leisure. Cruising on glowing synths, gritty drum-machines, and stratospheric vocals, GL's music is a cosmic dream-sequence not unlike a lost reel from the mid-80s. Signed on first listen by newly-minted Sydney label Plastic World (home to releases from Retiree, Alba, Tuff Sherm and Cassius Select), the duo's debut EP Love Hexagon will introduce their pulsating sound with lead singles Won't You See AND What Happened to Us plus remix treatment from Detroit's house don Terrence Parker and Running Back head-honcho, Gerd Janson. It's a salacious introduction to GL's romantic hedonism, and just a taste of what's expected in the future. Dali - Fine Young Man (feat. Lil' Dave & Lisa Preston)

Dali represents a special collaborative moment in time, captured in aural form, between Record Breakin's own "lil'dave and vocalist Lisa Preston (aka LP).

Lil'dave is a Philadelphia-based audio tastemaker who has made a name for himself by exposing people to soulful music in all it's forms. As a DJ, he can easily whip the most mainstream crowd into a frenzy, but he is at his best when he digs deep into his crates for funky grooves, broken boogie, and thumping bass.
