Goldband Records played a key role in documenting and shaping of musical traditions, tastes, and trends, both regionally and internationally since 1944. The focus of the Goldband catalog is certainly set on Country & Western, Swamp Pop, and Cajun music. However, from the 1960s until the early 1970s Goldband, and it's sub-label ANLA Records, released many high-quality Soul and Rhythm & Blues recordings. Simply put, Shuler had an ear for talent. He always believed in "...;giving a man a chance; otherwise, how would you discover what somebody could do" That was the guiding philosophy and the secret to the success of Goldband Records.

Born March 27, 1913 in Wrightsboro, Texas, Eddie Shuler moved to Lake Charles in 1942 to work as a dragline operator. He found additional part-time work in a music store, leading him into a career in the music business. He then joined the country, western swing, and Cajun group The Hackberry Ramblers. Having sharpened his musical skills, he left the group to form his own band, The Reveliers.

By the early 1950s, Shuler acquired the Goldband complex in north Lake Charles. It would be a combination record store (Eddie's Music House), television repair shop (Eddie's Quick Service T.V.), and recording studio for over a half-century thereafter. Being the one and only recording studio in town, it did not take long for other artists in the area to migrate in Shuler's direction.

You've Never Been Alone', the first single from the WALLS EP, was co-produced by Rob McAndrews aka Airhead, recently acclaimed by Pitchfork for his debut album 'For Years' (R&S, 2013), and mixed by the stellar French sound engineer Stephane 'Alf" Briat (Air, Phoenix, Sebastien Tellier, Francoise Hardy, etc.). The song gives an original, continental answer to the UK based 'twisted R&B-sung-by-cutely-breathy females scene" (The Guardian) that has been much-trumpeted lately. With its interrupted, intricately detailed and effects-washed sound, 'You've Never Been Alone' is an idiosyncratic yet fiercely melodic, groove-based pop hit. Throughout her EP, Andrea explores relationships, restlessness and dislocation, using a smorgasbord of sounds to dig down into the heart of her nomadic upbringing.

File Andrea's ethereal deep soul dubstep sounds and her fairy-like unique voice next to FKA Twigs, Little Dragon, The XX & SBTRKT, add some Cocteau Twins and Kate Bush reminiscence and you will not regret it. Big Easy Gems From The Dawn Of Soul Music

Soul City New Orleans presents records which served to establish the musical direction of the city in the early 1960s, at the dawn of the soul era. Perhaps the most glowing testimony to the city came from songwriters Frank Guida and Joe Royster in their 1960 smash hit 'New Orleans' for Gary 'U.S.' Bonds: 'Where the magnolia blossoms fill the air, you ain't been to heaven if you ain't been there.' New Orleans is also known as the Crescent City for its geographic shape, or the Big Easy for the city's atmosphere and pace of life, largely driven by the high humidity and the general bonhomie endemic of South Louisiana.

The music of New Orleans has tended to match the lifestyle, easy tempo with gently insistent rolling beat and a rhythm driven either by a thumping on-beat (Mardi Gras marching bands and second-line parades) or a laid-back off-beat. While the formative talent from the city's rhythm & blues years was all signed to remote labels, by the end of the Fifties things were beginning to look up in the local industry, and there was a relative wealth of labels active in the city.

Compiled and annotated by soul music authority and radio presenter Clive Richardson, Soul City New Orleans features significant releases on local labels like Minit, Instant, Ric, Ron, Bandy and AFO, as well as NOLA-related recordings for other imprints both large and small. Here we have music from the formative period of the soul era in the Big Easy.

The power of the human voice, especially when held in song, has long been known to be immensely influential, potent and emotive across all of humankind. When conveying a message, the spoken word - whether in speech, poetry or song - is infinitely more evocative than that of written. And when that message is voiced in the realm of jazz, amidst the open and dramatic freedom that only jazz can provide, the message can be all the more poignant.

Having examined spiritual jazz as it was expressed in the US, and then followed its messengers and influences in Europe and beyond, our sixth instalment of our Spiritual Jazz series showcases jazz vocals: a collection of jazz messages that are united in voice.

The majority of tracks here are as political as they are theological, but it's the inner sanctity of the music that is the defining factor. These are songs that concern themselves with the universal condition of this world, as well as the next. In fact, as the distinction between the theological and the humanistic is blurred, so is the definition of a song - many of the tracks are atypical in that they do not possess lyrics with a beginning, middle and end. Likewise the voices that convey them often can't be said to be 'singing' in the usual sense of the word; we hear solemn chanting, intense wailing, earnest poetry and ardent recitation in between bouts of singing, the quality of which is often nothing short of exquisite. The styles of performance encompass modern jazz, the avant-garde and jazz fusion, and include elements of styles from the long and winding path of the African diaspora, including Cuban, Brazilian, Caribbean and other Pan-American rhythms.

Spiritual Jazz 6: Vocals examines some of the rarest and most extraordinary vocal jazz recordings. We have included some well-known songs, as well as some of the most obscure. There are tracks recorded made for major labels, and some that were issued privately. But all of them speak or sing of a better place or a better world, and the world can only be a better place when they are played.

This is esoteric jazz, modal jazz, spiritual jazz - as performed with the human voice.

Ever elusive duo Flight Facilities dropped a bombshell on unsuspecting, devoted fans, announcing the wholly unanticipated - and yet incredibly welcomed - debut album, 'Down to Earth". The production pair, best known for their string of popular club singles have done the unexpected, announcing a cracking new set of tunes to compliment their already impressive back catalogue, along with a headline world tour that will see the guys conquer their biggest headline shows to date, via the likes of The Enmore (Syd), The Forum (Melb), Webster Hall (NYC) and The Regent in LA. Some of the guests waiting in the departure lounge include the divine Ms Emma Louise, New York's most soulful comedian, Reggie Watts, a star turn from Melbourne's Owl Eyes, a foray into hip-hop with hotly tipped rapper Bishop Nehru, along with existing favourites like Micky Green and Giselle. These are just some of the highlights that will be coming out of the 'Down To Earth' carousel in the near future. Since their arrival in 2009, Flight Facilities have proven themselves to be one of electronic music's most consistently popular songwriting duos. Pulshar return to Desolat with another stunning long player filled with a selection of sumptuous productions that further demonstrate their grasp over intimate and deeply ethereal electronic music. Vinyl version of 'Blood and Mathematics' features the originals and instrumentals via download code, and is perfectly timed for when the days begin to draw to a close. Barcelona based duo Sergio S. Vidal and Pablo Bolivar have cemented the Pulshar name and reputation as proponents of dub-heavy, soulful and at times psychedelic electronic music. Their first Desolat long player 'Inside' received critical acclaim and effortlessly bridged the gap between the dance-floor and the home listening environment. They returned to Desolat in 2013 with a deliciously deep and trippy EP in 'Different Drum', and now continue their relationship with the label with 'Blood and Mathematics'. Pulshar continue their affair with Electro, Instrumental Hip-Hop, Dub and Psychedelia. They have distilled this to create a distinctive and soulful brand of electronic music and the new Long Player represents where the artists are in 2014. All the tracks are written and produced by them, with only Guti as a featuring artist on 'Running Away'. This has resulted in them cultivating a traditional 'album' experience where one track effortlessly segues into the next and takes the listener through a range of emotions across the record. Blood and Mathematics is a contemporary electronic music listening experience that will be revisited again and again.

In the style of DJ SHADOW's classic "ENTRODUCING" this album blends soul, hip hop and jazz together in something best described as "Mood Beats". Both innovative and retro with his minimalist approach to production and editing this is a highly interesting album throughout. Fans of DJ SHADOW, RUCKUS ROBOTICUS, DJ FOOD and the like will love this. Don't sleep on it. Highly recommended.

Athens of the North is proud to present Milton Wright's stunning alternate version of the now Classic Miami soul LP 'Friends & Buddies'. An altogether more stripped down, folky soul affair than its highly respected, much sampled brother is now available on Vinyl, CD and Digital for the very first time.

Shelved at the last minute then re-recorded and overdubbed, only a few promo copies of this early version escaped from the studio and are deep in the collections of the very few previously in the know.

The master tapes burnt in a fire at T.K Disco in Miami in the early 80s so even the label has not heard this in 30 Years. Many reissues of the second version of Friends & Buddies LP have come and gone, but Milton's original vision has remained hidden until now.

As searingly honest and stunningly soulful as any seminal Marvin Gaye or Terry Callier LP, it stands tall amongst its exceptional peers as one of the true pillars of quality 70s soul.

Multicultural and multi-talented composer and performer Shawn Lee lives in what he calls a "World of Funk." His mother is half Lebanese and a quarter Native American Indian. His wife is Indian, born in London from parents who are from Tanzania, East Africa. Their daughters (Mela & Seela) are half British/Asian and half American with the family roots to American Indian and Lebanese. As an American living in London he has his ears open to sounds from around the world, and all the spin-offs, mash-ups and fusions that pop-up. "Turkish Psych, Thai Funk, African Disco, Cambodian rock, Brazilian soul," lists Lee. "If you can say it, it exists." Lee has as an uncanny ability to pick-up and play any instrument he can lay his hands on (his studio is like a candy-store for curious musicians) and for World of Funk he went global playing sitar, ektar, Balaphone, Tanpura, kalimba, Steel drum, Guitarron, Moroccan castanets, Cithare, vibraphone, Xylophone, Bulbul tarang, Charango, Bouzouki, talking drum, and Udu. But it wasn't just geography, family roots, and a well-stocked studio that fueled this album. Lee is a massive fan of worldly-funk. The Turkish psych of Selda and Ersen, early 1970s Bollywood soundtracks by RD Burman and Asha Bhosle, the Brazilian soul and disco of Tim Maia, Ethiopian Jazz great Mulatu Astatke and the Afro funk of Pat Thomas and Marijata were all big influences on World of Funk. "Like many western musicians, my ears have been seduced by the exotic sounds of the East and beyond. By the same token, many musicians from around the world have been inspired by the music of America and England as well. What we've got here is a universal language," says Lee. "When we bastardize each other's sounds/ music and get it wrong - we get it so right. It mutates and becomes something extraordinary. Now that is funky!" Adding to Lees melting pot of sounds are guests from around the world. Brazilian singer-multi instrumentalist Curumin (Hailing from Sao Paulo, and of Japanese/Spanish Brazilian background) and British/Egyptian singer Natacha Atlas completely embody the spirit of World of Funk. While on-tour in Los Angeles this Summer Lee locked down three very special collaborations. The first was with Chhom Nimol the LA based Cambodian singer with the band Dengue Fever. Lee made an instrumental track with Clutchy Hopkins (which includes the sound of a 1960's Smith and Corona typewriter!) for Dengue Fever member Paul Smith who recorded Chhoms haunting vocal. A chance meeting with Bardo of Chicano Batman on Sunset Boulevard led to some garage-y flavored West Coast Latino-funk. And then both Willie McNeal and Money Mark suggested Lee work with Cava. The album also features Truth and Soul Recording artist Michael Leonhart, NOMO bandleader Elliot Bergman, and Lee's mother-in-law (aka Nanny Jee)!

The Trevor Nelson Collection 3 features an extensive list of Top 10 hits that perfectly encapsulate everything R&B, from major artists including Usher, R.Kelly, En Vogue and Lauryn Hill. These artists sit next to established megastars such as Justin Timberlake and the all-conquering woman in music Beyonce; featuring 'Sweet Dreams'.

From further back come the pioneers of Aretha Franklin, Earth, Wind & Fire, Marvin Gaye and Chic with the perennial classic 'Good Times'. 'CILE TURNER, or Lucile Turner was a popular NBC radio host who presented a weekly show promoting traditional African-American music and folk stories that she collected on her many journeys across the South. 'Crap Shootin' Sinner' finds her in top form on an atmospheric tale of a gambler's delight. A hard to find original Colonial 45 from 1959.
BIRDIE GREEN is best known for her original End 45 'How Come' / 'Tremblin'' recorded in 1962. Both sides have been popular on the Belgium Popcorn scene but here we showcase the more intense 'Tremblin'', also to be found on the Outta Sight album The Groove! (OSCD044).

LIGHTNIN' SLIM is regarded as one of the 5 great bluesmen of all-time alongside Muddy Waters, Little Walter, Howlin' Wolf and Sonny Boy Williamson. Here we feature two of his mid-fifties Excello sides that have been steadily rising in popularity and price. Both have the requisite R&B tempo for dance floor action and both make their debut vinyl reissue back-to-back for the first time. 'Have Your Way' is also featured on the Outta Sight album R&B And Classic Soul Vol 1 (available now RSCD004).

LITTLE ESTHER, aka Esther Phillips, is a familiar name to Northern; Modern and R&B soul fans alike having enjoyed a 25-year recording career. Here we feature two of her songs from 1953, by which time she had already released a slue of singles as a solo artist and originally with the Johnny Otis Orchestra. Both of our chosen sides are reissued for the first and both are highly collectable. 'Cherry Wine' was penned by Henry Glover and has been tearing up the dance floors across Europe for some years. The B-side 'You Took My Love Too Fast' is an early Mike Stoller song that is currently changing hands for 3-figures, if you can find one.

MILTON TRENIER, one of the famed Trenier brothers, also enjoyed a prolific solo career that produced this 1959 Dot recording 'Gonna Catch Me A Rat'. A hard to find 45 that has been picking up a lot of plays in the R&B Clubs and is rising in value - catch one while you can!
DEAN JONES recorded his version of 'St. James Infirmary' in 1960 and is one of a number of versions that are currently picking up plays across Europe. A hard to find original on the 88 Brand logo. This legendary figure in the British R&B scene of the early 60s, without whom the history of English Rock'n'Roll and specially R&B would have been very different, was one of the most exciting live acts of the time. This, his first album, stands very proudly amongst the most essential British R&B / Blues albums of all times, and is certainly a must for any Mod / 60s R&B afficionado. An art-funk ensemble from the South Bronx in New York, ESG was formed by four sisters: Deborah Scroggins (bass, vocals), Maria Scroggins (congas, vocals), Renee Scroggins (guitar, vocals), Valerie Scroggins (drums), and friend Leroy Glover (bass). ESG have been influential in a wide range of musical genres, including hip hop, post punk, disco, and dance-punk. Baltimore's native son has a hybrid R&B, vintage soul style & performs w/his 9-piece band. His blazing, high-energy live performances have been gaining notoriety, including headlining appearances alongside Sharon Jones & the Dapkings.

Born 'Juho Nurmela' in the rustic town of Jurva in the west of Finland, Headrooms left home at the tender age of sixteen to study music at the Kaustinen College of Music and classical guitar at Turku Arts Academy. His inspiration during these formative years stemmed from a diverse cast of musicians including Julian Bream, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors and Guns N' Roses.

Following the conclusion of his studies in Finland, Headrooms relocated to Amsterdam to study film composition at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. After graduation he refined his skill as a composer while concurrently working as a housekeeper in various hotels around the city. Within this droll working environment a soundscape comprised of Jamie XX, Massive Attack, Four Tet, Bonobo, Madlib and Flying Lotus allowed him to maintain his focus. His perseverance reaped its just rewards when he became a multifaceted film composer creating music for films, theater, dance, puppetry and even the circus.

Headrooms is celebrating his debut single, 'Pillow Talk' b/w 'Silly Chats;' a gorgeous 7' vinyl presented by the Amsterdam-based Groove College record label. This release aspires to atmospheric beauty. Headrooms is like a contemporary Angelo Badalamenti had classic rock and hip-hop served as his impetus to shape sound. The cinematic music of Headrooms is a diegetic score which mirrors his protean influences and the trajectory of his own life.

Vancouver soul dynamo Dawn Pemberton has a deep musical foundation rooted in tradition. Spending her formative years surrounded by a family of multi-instrumentalists she developed a true love of music from the very beginning. A staple of the West Coast music scene, she can be found tearing it up as a vocalist, arranger, and go-to for live performances and studio sessions.

The secret weapon of funk and soul groups all over Western Canada, she has shared the stage with the likes of Maceo Parker, Linda Tillery, John Lee Sanders, The Sojourners, John Boutte, and Dutch Robinson. Her gifts have been featured in the music of future jazz group 1Luv (Sonar Kollektiv) and the blues duo The Harpoonist and The Axe Murderer.

Heavily influenced by rhythm, she is drawn to the percolating under current of soul-jazz and funk which is infused in everything that she does. "I've got a rhythmic stream running through me at all times," says Pemberton. "It's all about the groove for me." Joining her in studio for the recording of the album are Johnny Andrews on Drums, Scott Tucker on Bass, Gavin Youngash on Guitar, Max Zipursky playing Keys, Raphael Geronimo with Percussion, Colin Maskell on Saxophone, and Kristian Naso on Trumpet. On leadoff single "Deeper" soulful grooves meet swirling organs, punchy horns, and tight drum breaks that pay homage to Pemberton's roots in gospel but update the sound with a feel all her own. Her creative voice has been bubbling to the surface for the better part of a decade. With a proven track record as a singer and performer it is undeniably the time for her to come forward and express her own vision. "I enjoyed helping others bring their projects to life and after a while I wanted to experience the process for myself, from beginning to end. It was important to be in full control of the musical choices so that they truly reflected my personality and vibe."

With a compact production, filled with guitar riffs, catchy melodies surrounded by a haunting bass, incredible electronic atmospheres, his new project 'Stalker' shows his concept of pop music.
