Cross Bronx Expressway - Cross Bronx Expressway / Help Your Brothers

Two sides of New-York rare Soul & Funk on a limited licensed reissue 45.

The band originally was a house band for J&S Records owned by Zelma Sanders. Zelma, a black and female record producer, was known to call at the last minute to gather her band for a recording session. Rumor has it, the band had extra studio time and put down their tracks in only a couple of takes. Most were self taught musicians.

Deep Street Soul - Come Alive! Cd

Australia's Deep Street Soul, since signing to Freestyle Records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the MC5's Wayne Kramer saying that their version of Kick Out The Jams "... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!".

From their debut self titled instrumental long player, to the 2011 follow up 'Look Out, Watch Out' (and the addition of vocalist mighty May Johnston) this band have grown, matured and honed thier songwriting skills, as well as maintaining their rare ability to really capture the essence of the original raw funk & soul artists that inspire them.

2016 sees them return with this quite spectacular new collection. Whilst the diamond hard, driving grooves remain undiminished, there is also no doubt that the bands song writing has developed to an equally assured level. Case in point is Souls Come Alive - from Monique Boggia's Wurlitzer electric piano intro, the blistering horns and May Johnson's simply exemplary singing - the songs' instant appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic soul music.

Come Alive also features guest vocalists Joshua Tavares and Kylie Auldist - Come Alive is Deep Street Souls finest work - no if's, but's or maybe's. It's a done deal.

Benny Spellman / Ernie K-doe - Fortune Teller / A Certain Girl

Tousaint was a major influence on the development of New Orleans R&B. His 60 year career was steeped in the very soul of R&B in which he was emersed from a very early age in clubs like the famed Dew Drop Inn on La Salle Street where he hung out with the likes of Huey 'Piano' Smith, Dave Bartholomew and Earl King. In 1960 he was hired as A&R man and producer by Joe Banashak of Minit Records which resulted in, amongst many others, the two legendary sides featured here. Toussaint penned both 'Fortune Teller' and 'A Certain Girl' under the pseudonym 'Naomi Neville', his mother's maiden name.
BENNY SPELLMAN, from Pensacola, Florida, is forever remembered for his 1962 hit single 'Lipstick Traces' and - it's b-side - 'Fortune Teller'. The single reached No. 28 in the Billboard R&B chart and 'Fortune Teller' went on to be covered by The Rolling Stones, The Hollies, The Merseybeats and The Who, amongst others. The plug-side 'Lipstick Traces (On A Cigarette)' was recorded in New Orleans on February 2, 1962 with background vocals by Irma Thomas and Willie Harper, it was famously covered by The O'Jays in '65 who's version also made No.28 in the R&B charts.
ERNIE K-DOE (born Ernest Kador Jr, in New Orlerans) is also remembered for one hit single - 'Mother-in-Law', which knocked Del Shannon's 'Runaway' off the No. 1 slot in May 1961. Spellman provided the bass vocals on the recording and was disgruntled that he didn't receive more credit for the hit. It was largely for this reason that Toussaint penned 'Lipstick Traces' for Spellman in an attempt to even the score. Our featured side, 'A Certain Girl' followed later that year but stalled at No. 71, although it was covered by The Yardbirds in 1964 on their first single.

Howlin' Wolf - Smokestack Lightning / Moanin' At Midnight

HOWLIN' WOLF, aka Chester Arthur Burnett, was one of the giants of Chicago Blues, both in terms of his booming vocals and his physical stature. Both sides featured here were Billboard R&B hits and contributed to Rolling Stone magazine voting him number 51 in the 'Greatest Artists of All Time'. Wolf's debut solo 78 rpm single, 'Moanin' At Midnight', was released on both Chess and RPM in 1951 and became the title track to his debut 1958 LP. A mint copy of the LP will set you back over $1,000 today but the song is available here, remastered, along with the classic 'Smokestack Lightning' for under a tenner!

Ike & Tina Turner - A Fool In Love / It's Gonna Work Out Fine

IKE & TINA TURNER are, of course, the stuff of legend and there is little that we can add here other than to reiterate the global appeal of the husband and wife duo. Ike, from Clarksdale, Mississippi had already established himself as a guitarist, composer and producer by the time he married Anna Mae Bullock from Nutbush, Tennessee. As 'The Ike & Tina Turner Revue' they become one of the most explosive live R&B acts of all time and their debut 45 'A Fool In Love' is featured here. Our chosen B-side, 'It's Gonna Work Out Fine', was recorded in 1961 and actually features the male vocals of Mickey Baker while Ike is relegated to piano accompanied by Sylvia Robinson on guitar. Both sides scored a No.2 Billboard R&B hit.

His unique vibrato style influenced many contemporary artists including Elvis Presley. Here we present his most collectable R&B side 'Coal Miner' coupled with the Jump Blues rarity 'Skidy Woe'.

Summer Love

Dab Hand
27.10.2015

Essential 4 track EP of deep disco and summer soul, boogie house and steady groovin' funk edits. All tracks are given Magnetic Soul's expert disco dub treatment focusing on grooves, added presence and beefed up bottom end for a solid dance floor feel.

The A side enters the spacious tropical House vibes of Summer Love and the delightful slow building soul strings and vocal of Universal Love. The B side hits first with some low slung, raw funk grooves with added brass stabs and leaves us on psychedelic soul funk, à la Gil Scott of Cold Outside.

Support from: Rahaan, Mark 7, LTJ, Vinyl Addicted, Copycat, Yam Who, 80s Child, Beaten Space Probe, Jay Ru & Sad Ghost...

Very Very rare slow burning funk45 recorded in 1973 Youngstown, Ohio. The band were local heros but never made it out of their locality, many still playing today. Line up is Mike Ohara on Guitar, Timbo on Bass, Reggie Manley on Sax, Chris Mcfarren on Trumpet, Norman Weatherly on Organ and Ben Powers Jr onDrums. This 45 is strictly limited to 500 copies.

Bubba Suggs - Everything That Looks Good

A blues funk masterpiece, Charles 'Bubba' Suggs released 3 (i think) 45's, this being his crowning achievement. First rediscovered and spun by legendary Essex collector Ian Wright after buying it blind (guessing it might be good as it looked rare and was unknown in the days before sound clips) on ebay. The record has remained extremely elusive due to it being a privately pressedClarksville, Tennessee45 and never nationally distributed. It has always been coveted across collectors and DJ and Collector circles and by myself, we are very proud to be bringing you a legit and rather tastly sounding reissue of this belter.

Deep Street Soul - Souls Come Alive

Deep Street Soul, since signing to Freestyle Records in 2008, have earned a reputation as being right at the grittiest end of the hard funk scene who made a big impact from the outset - with even the MC5's Wayne Kramer saying that their version of Kick Out The Jams "... is the greatest version of the song ever recorded!".

2016 sees the band return with this two track teaser taken from the new album 'Come Alive!', and it's clear from the outset that the group have taken it up a level with Mighty May making her presence felt on both sides of this heavy 45.

Souls Come Alive leaps from the speakers with Monique Boggia's electric piano intro, the blistering horns kick like a donkey behind May Johnson's simply exemplary singing - the songs' catchy appeal will be lost on no one with an ear for genuine organic 21st century soul music. the flipside Done Me Wrong also doesn't let the pressure drop for a second.

Without a doubt this new single proves Deep Street Soul have delivered two extremely tough and uncompromising slabs of raw funk & soul that hints at the stunning album to come.

Painel De Controle - Relax

Two slices of Brilliant Brazilian Disco, Painel De Controle have a few bangers across their RCA LPs, these two being my favourites. 'Relax' is a straight up boogie monster, well known to deep disco & boogie heads flipped with 'Malandrinh' with its insanely catchy guitar. The original Brazilian 'Relax' 7" plays at 33rpm (like many Brazilian 45s), if you know you're cutting you will know this is not ideal. Our new 7" is 45rpm and cut from a super crisp new master from the tapes at Timmon Cutting Labs, sounds about 5x better than the O.G...,..simple choice.

Various - Movements Vol. 8 Cd

The intelligentsia have been claiming it for quite some time, and now finally, after many petitions, demonstrations and protests, a tiny little record label from Germany has achieved what only Google and "troubleshooter par excellence" Angus MacGyver have ever accomplished: admission into the worldwide dictionary. "To Google" and "to MacGyver" will soon be joined by the newly coined verb "to Tramp". The term can be decoded as "to seek and find the seemingly hopeless" or "looking for something hidden", always connected with a positive output.

For several years, gold seekers at the most humble and tiniest record label on earth (however certainly one of the funkiest!) follow their dedicated passion. Their brand new masterwork, Movements 8, focuses on rare privately produced american soul, jazz and funk, and proudly bears the title as the 8th volume in the Movements Series.

It took long to find the original vintage records and master tapes, but it took even longer to find the musicians behind the recordings. It required painstakingly detailed work to get everything together. While other labels' compilation quality might wane after some years, getting further watered down as the volumes increase, and banking on the success of earlier releases, the Movements series is a positive exception. The people behind this series know how the wind blows, and will stop at nothing to provide music lovers, DJs, and collectors only sweetest fresh breeze of heretofore unheard and uncompiled masterpieces. Songs by Papa Albert French, Thyme, Kay Dennis, Joe Wilson, Ulysses Crockett, John Timmons, and all the fellow campaigners emphasize this statement. The detailed liner notes and unseen photographs complement the whole package. The staff at Tramp always produces albums from their compilation series' as if it were their last so that each record can be enjoyed in it's own right. That being said, you can trust that Tramp is already seeking "to Tramp" more gems like these for a 9th volume.

Various - Badass Funk EP Vol. 1

Breakbeat Paradise Recordings is back to mark the 10th year of being in the ghetto rockin, funky breaks business. To celebrate that we've decided to hit you hard with a 7-track vinyl release to represent the very best of what the label has to offer. 7 of the very best producers in the funky breaks scene have joined forces on this ruthless funky bomb of an EP!

With the Badass Funk EP the BBP All-Star team is taking it back to the timeless sound of the oldskool that the label has kept on rockin' since they first started in 2006. Since then the label has navigated through related genres like Nu Funk and Ghetto Funk without loosing track of base core. Every since the first release Sound of Invasion by BadboE the label has kept a strong grip on the funk, the breaks and the street vibes of the oldskool.

To kick things off we brought back 2 of the very best producers in the game The Breakbeat Junkie & DJP, who's been responsible of some of the classic BBP tunes like Freak Hop Part 3 and Represent The Style. Here they are back in better shape than ever to do their thing on the Go Off jam.

To follow things up we call for a true ghetto funk phenomenon: DJ B-Side, who just started to drop party bombs for us last year. But B-Side has been a household name in the ghetto funk scene for years and has released several legendary EPs for the Ghetto Funk label.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any funkier we brought in DJ Maars from down under to tease us with the skanky funk jam: Work That Funk.

It wouldn't be much of a BBP anniversary release without a tune from label owner and funk breaks veteran: BadboE. All striped down to the core BadboE's cooked up a funked up jam that oozes oldskool funk from start to finish.

Moving on with more skillful mashup business from one of the scene's favorite DJ and producer: Roast Beatz. This is the first release from Roast Beatz on BBP since his epic album release: Luxury Boom Bap that dropped last year.

The Boom Bap continues on the track from BBP residents Mako & Mr Bristow, who team up for some more of their addictive throwback funk business.

Last but certainly not least a true expect of the oldskool: Morongroover is ending things big with his Good 'ol Days joint.

Time goes by but it has become evident that the funk stays - and BBP is right here to make sure it will. Stay tuned for another 10 years of funk, beats and breaks...

In 2011, KING independently released their debut EP to much acclaim- The Story, Supernatural, and Hey made up the 3-piece introduction to their carefully crafted sound. Fueled by word of mouth excitement and social media posts from supporters including Prince, Gilles Peterson, Erykah Badu, Solange, Nile Rodgers, Sam Sparro, Janelle Monae, Questlove and a host of others, their story and songs have spread wide and made new fans of many. Since the release of their initial EP, KING have been touring, performing as a headlining act to sold out crowds in Los Angeles, New York, Atlanta, Chicago, London, and Amsterdam amidst a host of other US cities.

The Whole Truth - Stalemate

The Whole Truth is back with Stalemate, an inspired take on classic disco sounds with an addictive hook.

After exploring dub-disco hybrids in collaboration with Mo Kolours and UK reggae legend Errol Bellot, and a recent EP that drew from the early 80s New York scene. The Whole Truth's new single is the perfect blend of hazy nostalgia and club-rocking groove, a strangely familiar dance floor dream that could grace the most discerning club or the deepest after-hours session. B-side Checkmate is a disarmingly simple, melodic boogie track that comes on like Boards of Canada circa 1983, with charming results.

The Magnificent Tape Band - Patterns In My Mind (feat. Rachel Modest)

The Magnificent Tape Band are the alter egos of ATA Records founders Neil Innes & Pete Williams, who were the creative driving force behind last years debut album by The Sorcerers, for which they wrote and produced all the tracks as well as contributing bass and guitar performances. Sheffield born, Rachel Modest developed her unique vocal ability within the churches and gospel choirs of her local community. Now based in Leeds she has developed a powerful and soulful vocal style that takes inspiration from artists such as Madeleine Bell, Dee Dee Warwick, Dusty Springfield and on "Patterns In My Mind" delivers a performance that occasionally resembles the falsetto of The Delfonics William Hart.

Taking inspiration from the more abstract end of the soul spectrum that has been a richly tapped vein for hip-hop producers, The Magnificent tape band aim to create an evocative tapestry of sound that pulls together psychedelic soul with British library music to create a distinctly dramatic sounding record. Recorded on original '60s equipment, using vintage instruments, "Patterns in my mind" immediately brings to mind the more experimental psychedelic soul records of the late 60s/early seventies by incorporating driving clavinet, loping drums and swirling organ alongside Rachel Modest's ethereal vocals.

Support comes from Floating points, Wah Wah 45's Dom Servini, Shawn Lee & Adrian Younge.

Airplay so far has come from Shawn Lee (Soho radio) and Dom Servini (Amazing radio) with radio play from BBC6 Music (Craig Charles Funk & Soul Show, Huey Morgan) forthcoming.

2016 Vinyl Reissue - Remastered & Pressed on Heavyweight 180 gram Vinyl
Heavyweight 180 gram vinyl, Printed insert with sleeve notes and credits. Limited edition of 750 worldwide.
The Viper Label and Mellowtone Records are excited to announce the release of Soothing Music For Stray Cats by Edgar 'Jones' Jones, now available on vinyl for the very first time. The seminal album was originally released in 2005 to much critical acclaim, gaining plaudits from fellow artists and reviewers alike, with Noel Gallagher declaring it 'the best sounding record to come out of Liverpool ever'. That's not opinion... that's a fact'.
The exquisitely eclectic nature of Soothing Music For Stray Cats garnered a dedicated following of admirers across the world and a rich supply of superlatives from the music press, Stunning' (Mojo) Mesmerising... Remarkable' (Record Collector), Liverpool's answer to Dr John' (Uncut) were just a handful of the words of praise lavished upon Edgar's debut opus. The NME said: Listening to this becomes an aural history of the world's coolest music'' and it took the Number One spot in their '100 Greatest Albums You've Never Heard' in 2012.
The album was recorded and produced by Edgar in Liverpool, on an eight-track recorder given to him by none other than Johnny Marr, and the original fourteen tracks are now available for the first time I in glorious heavyweight 180 gram black vinyl. Jenny Dalton's artwork has been re-imagined by The Studio of Ezra and the LP is available in two formats, including a deluxe edition with limited edition art print, signed by Edgar Jones.

Edgar's musical path began as front man of Liverpool band The Stairs, celebrated by the likes of Elvis Costello, signed to Go! Discs, then home of Paul Weller and The La's. Their debut single 'Weed Bus' and following album Mexican R 'n' B, became classics of their time and the band have recently enjoyed a highly anticipated reunion. Through The Isrites and on to The Big Kids, Edgar's muse was restless, but by 2005, he seemed to have found the perfect palate for his influences . Jazz, R 'n' B, soul, and Doo Wop were smeared across 'Soothing Music For Stray Cats' in glorious technicolour.

As an artist in his own right Edgar has since achieved legendary cult status and has played with the great and the good including Paul Weller, St Etienne and Lee Mavers, A form of National Service' to quote Edgar.

A triumph of eclecticism, a victory for perseverance and passion and without doubt a fine listen.  A timeless masterpiece.

Various - Praise Poems, Vol. 3 Cd

Pretty much one year ago we elated critics, reviewers, and music lovers with an album by the name of Praise Poems. 12 months later we are proud to introduce you to the third volume in this already highly acclaimed series. What Warmth was to the first and Abraham Battat was to the second volume, Feather is their counterpart on Praise Poems 3 (PP3).

When we stumbled across Be Real we immediately knew that this tune was going to be the opener for PP3. Thanks to this wonderful composition we were motivated like in the early days of the label. However we were aware of the fact that we would have to do justice to the above demands, moreover, efforts had to be made to leave our fans (once again) through and through speechless.

And this is what we did. In the same category of Feather's pure beauty are selections by Scott Cunningham, Wanda Stafford, and Toby Cooper. But there is much more to discover. Actually, there is something for everyone. Fans of mid '70s jazz-funk ala Herbie Hancock will be thrilled to hear The Rosewood Trio's West 15th Street Strut or Geoff Tyus' Mt. Vernon Avenue. Vocal jazz aficionados will pick either Shebbi Smart's amazing Love Is Like The First Day Of Spring or Jennie Misty's exotic venture Nature Boy as their albums favourite. And who else could complete the selection better than Abraham Battat. We've rarely heard a vocal jazz tune as melancholy, heavy & downright sinister as this.

Rarity and quality go hand in hand on each of our releases, and PP3 does not make an exception. Even more important is whether a song has been compiled yet. In this case, all but one of them have yet to be compiled elsewhere. The Praise Poems series remains an attempt at a faithful snapshot of this revolutionary music before it began it's inevitable backslide into the bourgeois excesses of the jazz-fusion genre.
