The refreshing sound of the Barcelona soul funk movement! "Coffee Cold"is a cover song which was originally recorded as a vocal with music by Galt MacDermot and lyrics by Bill Dumaresq. It appeared on the WOMAN IS SWEETER soundtrack sung by Fergus MacRoy on Kilmarnock Records. The instrumental is from the album SHAPES OF RHYTHM on Kilmarnock Records. The Slingshots were born in August of 2008 with the idea of recalling and recovering the rhythmic energy of deep funk, the warm vocal melodies of soul and the rich instrumental approach of jazz, from its origins until our times, to offer a danceable rich selection of music and sounds.

Brick was probably the first ever Disco Jazz group, they were formed in Atlanta in 1972. Robinsongs is really honoured to be releasing their first two albums 'Good High' and 'Brick' on this special Double CD release.
'Good High' originally released in 1976 on Bang Records featured the Anthem 'Dazz'; the 12' version is also included as a bonus track on this Robinsongs package. 'Dazz' reached #1 on the Billboard R&B chart, where it stayed for four weeks, also making Top 3 on the U.S. Pop chart. The album also went to #1 on the R&B album chart and top 20 on the pop chart, and the band was off to a flyer.
With the release of their second album 'Brick', the leadoff single was 'Dusic' which was in the same mould as 'Dazz' and with the same success 'Dusic' went to #2 on the R&B chart and top 20 on the U.S. Pop chart. The album also reached the summit on the R&B album chart in September of 1977. Unlike 'Good High' the 'Brick' album also gave the band a second top ten R&B hit with 'Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody', and the single version of this track is included as a bonus track on this package.
Brick went on to record five further albums but never managed to replicate the success of these two classic seventies Disco, Jazz, Funk themed albums. 'Dazz' remains one of the most sampled tracks of all time, featuring most significantly on Ice Cube's 'No Vaseline'.

Most recent converts to the world of Ned Doheny discovered his genius via Hard Candy or Prone. Our introduction was by way of "Postcards From Hollywood", a cult song from his stunning, self-titled debut album. Beautifully poignant, it can only be found on said LP. And whilst his later albums are rightly revered, "Postcards" - and the 9 additional tracks that comprise this exceptional opening statement - represent a criminally overlooked gem. Original vinyl copies of this album are extremely rare - and correspondingly expensive - so we're thrilled to present the first ever vinyl reissue of a true lost classic.
Of everything he recorded, we know this LP to be Ned's favourite. An intoxicating brew of acoustical jazz-rock, folk and country-rock - delivered in Ned's supremely laid back West Coast style - it features gorgeous melodic lines throughout, complimented by his distinctly funky overtones and tightly-coordinated instrumental textures. With albums as perfect as this, it is routinely tricky to identify standout tracks. However, rivalling the heartbreaking "Postcards" is the phenomenally propulsive "Lashambeaux", strident opener "Fineline" and "On And On", featuring the harmony vocals of Graham Nash.

James Brown. Who doesn't know about the godfather of soul Who doesn't know about the milestone anthem Cold Sweat' Maybe there is nobody, but we are sure that many of you don't know that hidden on that particular song, and in all of James Brown's productions, is one of the best kept secrets in soul music: Mrs. Martha High.
She is the one who sings that crazy soprano note at the very beginning of the song and she is the one who sang behind James Brown for about 35 years. She was with Brown and the Jb's in Boston on the infamous night after the Martin Luther King assassination, she flew with him in the dangerous Vietnam skies to entertain the US soldiers, and was also in Zaire celebrating the Rumble in the Jungle' between Ali and Foreman. Martha was truly a friend, confidant and supporter of the godfather of soul.
Maybe she was just too young and shy to jump over the other soul divas to ask for a solo record. Today is different.

SoulMusic Records is proud to present two classic early '70s albums by the late Brook Benton on one CD, with one 1971 non-album single ('A Black Child Can't Smile').
Brook Benton first rose to fame in the late '50s and over an entire decade, amassed 30 US hit singles and 14 best-selling albums, cut for Mercury records - including classic 45s such as 'It's Just A Matter Of Time', 'The Bo-Weevil Song', 'Kiddio' and 'Baby You've Got What It Takes', a duet with label-mate Dinah Washington.
After brief stints with RCA and Warner Brothers, Brook signed with Atlantic records in 1968 and recording on the company's Cotillion imprint, enjoyed his biggest international hit in 1969 with the now-classic, Tony Joe White-penned 'Rainy Night In Georgia'.
His third Cotillion album, 1970's Home Style' was recorded in Miami with the Dixie Flyers rhythm section and produced by renowned Atlantic arranger Arif Mardin. The song selection included material penned by Bob Dylan, Tony Joe White (who contributed three songs), Mac Davis as well as Brook's own 'Let Me Fix It' (featuring Cissy Houston) and Albert King's Stax hit, 'Born Under A Bad Sign'.
The follow up set, 1971's Story Teller' focused on Brook's penchant for country/soul material and included a cover of the Drifters' 'Save The Last Dance For Me' and the R&B charted single, 'Shoes'.
This 2-on-1 cd was remastered by Nick Robbins and includes stellar notes by renowned UK writer and R&B historian Clive Richardson.

Garland Green began performing in Chicago clubs and in 1967 performed in concert for Lou Rawls, a milestone in his career. From this event he landed his first record deal and in 1969 his single 'Jealous Kind Of Fella' reached the Top 5 in the R&B Chart selling a million copies. Leon Haywood was the producer on board here for this one RCA album in 1977, recorded in Los Angeles issued here for the first time on CD including two additional tracks previously only released as singles. Liz Vice didn't grow up with gospel music, and she never really thought of herself as a singer. Things change: The 32-year-old from Portland, Ore. has now released an album called There's A Light, whose songs and sound challenge many of the stereotypes about Christian music. The 200-gram vinyl version was plated and pressed by Quality Record Pressings.
"I started going to a church almost six years ago and they had a 'worship team' — two sets of musicians that would lead worship on Sundays," Vice recalls. "One day I was sitting there listening, and I had this little voice say, 'You need to go and sing on the worship team.' And I'm like, 'Oh no. Where is this coming from'"
Vice auditioned, got in, and soon found music and performance flooding into her life. And a good thing, too, because talent this special deserves to be shared with the world. The connection between gospel music and 1960s soul is reaffirmed on There's a Light, a set of devout songs in vintage, tambourine-shaking soul style.
"I remember how nervous I was. It just felt like all the pores in my body opened up and then it was just me in a room alone and I was singing to Jesus. When the song was over, I realized I was in front of a congregation," recalls Vice. "Afterward, one of my friends came up to me and asked 'What was that' She was teary and I said 'I don't know.' That was kinda the beginning of the beautiful journey."
There's a Light is the brainchild of Josh White, who wrote and produced each of the 10 tracks and released them under the Deeper Well label, a local gospel collective representing a number of faith-based musicians.
The first song White introduced Vice to was "Empty Me Out," a classically balanced, up-tempo song that seems pulled from the early days of Motown.
"'People love 'Empty Me Out.' Out of all of the songs on the album, that is the one song that is brought up over and over," says Vice. "There is something about it that just penetrates the souls of people. It's a prayer."

Erasmus Hall's 1980 album Your Love Is My Desire' is one of the most collectable and in fact desired modern soul albums of all time. Copies of the original pressing on Westbound have exchanged hands for over £400. Furthermore in-demand gems including Your Love Is My Desire' and Just Me And You' have never previously been on 7' vinyl, so as part of these Record Store Day release those two tracks are included on the format making this package irresistible. Eramus Hall are in fact a group taking their name from a building George Clinton saw and gave them while he was in Chicago. The group comprise lead vocalists Michael Gatheright and James Wilkerson with musicians Ronald Wright, Marvin Williams, Joe Anderson, Grady Smith, Charmie Currie and William Tillery.

Produced by Kevin Parker the album features the Beats1 & triple j played single Black Panda Koi Child unveiled new single 1-5-9. The buttery, chill-as-you-like cut is the band's second official single off the album. From the elongated horn-based procession that carries this introspective lyrical tale into a psych-tinged euphoria, to the rolling snare introduction, listeners are hooked into the exceptionally realised musical world of Koi Child.
Koi Child recorded their debut recordat Mangebong, on an island south of Perth. Featuring 14 tracks filled withwarm dubby chords, wandering bass lines, crunching drums and masterful lyricism, it doesn't take long for Koi Child to usher us deep into their own brand of magical hypnosis.
"We recorded the album in a little house on an island which included a nerve wracking river crossing on a boat, with a large amount of loaned recording gear. The shack-turned-recording studio made for a really nice vibe: swimming in the river, recording vocals in the kitchen, sinking an ungodly amount of tinnies and encounters with giant weirdo spiders.' says Tom Kenny (keys) of the recording experience.

Leslie Podkin's fantastic 'You Won't Need No Money' is a real oddball tune which shows the extent to which the original popcorn DJs dug deep to find records from every angle. Defying strict genre conventions, this is neither R&B, Jazz, Pop, or Latin, but instead has a strong flavour of all of them. Best just to call it popcorn then, and really superior popcorn it is. On the other side, as ever, another winner for your money, a female vocal led, mid-50s big band R&B showstopper in the form of 'Ooo-Poppa-Doo' by Lilyann Carol.

Deemed by many the pinnacle of the Philly Sound as perfected by legendary producers Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, 1972's Back Stabbers scored no less than two Top Five Pop and three Top Five R&B smashes with the songs "Love Train," "Time to Get Down," and the title tune (plus another Top 20 R&B hit with "992 Arguments").
But it's more than the hits that make this album a soul classic. Honed by a decade of woodshedding, the vocal arrangements of O'Jays Eddie Levert, William Powell and Walter Williams are simply sublime, and, when married to Gamble & Huff's polished backing tracks, they render such album tracks as "(They Call Me) Mr. Lucky" and "Who Am I" every bit as potent as the better-known songs. In short, Back Stabbers is a masterpiece through and through, one that brought both the O'Jays and Gamble and Huff to national attention, but it's never been reissued on vinyl in the "modern" era. Aussie jazz-funkers - Kerbside Collection - return with the follow up to their warmly received debut album from 2013 "Mind the Curb" with "Trash or Treasure". The music on "Trash or Treasure" explores wilder textures and tones interspersed with more 'jazzier' flavours alongside their gritty sidewalk rare groove.
Influenced by the rare funk and simple raw jazz and soul sounds of artists like Placebo (the 70's Belgian Jazz fusion group), The Menehan Street Band, The Whitefield Brothers, Tommy Guerrero, Ray Barbee and The Mattson 2, "Trash or Treasure" even contains hints of library music with lush tones from added instrumentation like vibraphone, sitar and brass that blend into their dusty Sixties inspired West Coast jazz funk sound. Recorded and engineered by Hopestreet Recording's Roberto Sola (Bob Knob), the album features an extended collection of players including members from The Cactus Channel, Bombay Royale and Brazil to complete the spectrum of colours on the record.
The album is introduced by the sweet soul groove flavour of guitarist Ravi Welsh's "Walk The Talk" that softly welcomes the listener in with the classic warmth of some lush Fender Rhodes. The title track "Trash Or Treasure" features some tasteful flute from Rodrigo Sha (Bossacucanova/Marcos Valle/Roberto Menescal/Brazil) floating atop the peculiar groove setup by the tight rhythm section and the accompanying bluesy vibraphone (Justin Marshall - The Putbacks) and guitar that both feature on other tracks including the hypnotic, stripped back groove of "Bogangar" and the twangy, 50s surf sounds of "Slidin'" (both beach references).
The album then moves into the skippy, jazz funk of "Feather Duster", the frenetic funk of "Quicksilver" and the heavy, gritty grooves of "Kojak The Frog" and "Cypress", before changing direction (after an impromptu interlude) to the 'jazz' territory of the album featuring an atmospheric rework of the mid 70's CTI records Freddie Hubbard classic "Red Clay" (CTI Records) which sees Ravi Welsh beautifully translate Hubbard's trumpet melody onto the guitar complete with sonic effects and percussion taking the track to a unique place. The record then lifts and builds back up for the final three tracks all with their own distinct flavour from the jazzy afro stylings of "Shake 'n' Bake", the funky groove of "Rabbit Hole", to the lo-fi disco dancefloor finale (complete with sitar) appropriately titled "Strawberry Fields".

NORTHERN SOUL was born in the Twisted Club, Manchester, but it came of age in the Golden Torch Ballroom, Stoke-on-Trent. Outta Sight pay homage to the iconic venue with 14 original tracks culled from the legendary playlist.
The original Torch building, on Hose Street in Tunstall, dated back to 1824, when it started out life as a church before becoming a roller-skating arena and then a cinema. It was finally bought by local entrepreneur Chris Burton in 1965 who turned it into a cabaret club promoting star turns of the day.
It wasn't until 1969 that a regular soul night began, hosted by budding DJ Keith Minshull. By 1972 the All-Nighters had taken over establishing the Torch as the country's No.1 soul venue.

The New Mastersounds rank among the most preeminent modern soul and funk bands of their time. Having started out in Leeds, UK, the quartet tour the globe regularly, bringing their hard-charging, delectably greasy jams to all corners of the globe, to feed a hungry fan base that stretches from New York City to Tokyo, San Francisco to Amsterdam and all points in between. In 2015, they return with their tenth studio album "Made For Pleasure", their most sprawling and ambitious record to date.
The band's core four-guitarist Eddie Roberts, drummer Simon Allen, bassist Pete Shand and organist Joe Tatton-are joined on the 11-track effort by guests including super fabulous soul chanteuse Charly Lowry, revered percussionist/vibraphonist Mike Dillon and the North Cali-based West Coast Horns, featuring tenor saxophonist Joe Cohen and trumpeter Mike Olmos.
Recorded in New Orleans, The New Mastersounds high-step through the humidity and heat leaving no soul or funk touchstone unturned. Both the title track and "High & Wide" are drenched in The-Meters-meet-Lee-Dorsey Big Easy funk, while tracks like "Enough Is Enough," "Joy" and "Just Gotta Run" are firmly rooted in classic soul sister rhythm & blues tradition, think Tina Turner, Ann Peebles, Bettye LaVette. Super-charged by Eddie Roberts' stinging guitar leads, "Cigar Time" and "Sitting On My Knees" take a decidedly soul-jazz turn, diving headlong into Grant Green grit and groove.
Capping off "Made For Pleasure" and further validating its title is a dubbed out reinvention of Iggy Azalea's smash hit "Fancy" that cleverly turns the pop artist's ode to materialism into a 21st century stoner anthem with the repurposed refrain, "I'm so irie."
The New Mastersounds know what feels good and deliver it in spades on their latest long player, and rightfully so, as it was after-all...Made For Pleasure.

OUTTA SIGHT pay homage to the original R&B maverick, and British music industry innovator, Guy Stevens with 16 original tracks culled from the DJs 'Scene Club' playlist.
When R&B fanatic Guy Stevens was given the Monday night dead spot at the tiny basement club in Ham Yard, R&B and the embryonic Mod scene, came of age. The former city insurance broker had acquired a formidable black American record collection and he was intent on spreading his R&B gospel to the 'in' crowd.
The Scene Club quickly established itself as the place to be seen and the place to see the coolest 'faces' in town. It was also THE no.1 spot in the West End to hear the very best that American R&B had to offer courtesy of Stevens who span the discs from his raised, temple-like, DJ booth packed with 45s, 78s and LPs.

A second foray into the hidden sounds of black America has unearthed the best collection yet of rare, classic, upbeat, unheard and exotic rhythm & blues. The set includes Phil Upchurch's million selling MOD anthem 'You Can't Sit Down', presented here as it was originally recorded, parts 1 and 2 segued together. Other hits include Little Willie John's R&B dancer 'I'm Shakin'' (covered by Jack White in 2012) and Ben E King's 'Young Boy Blues' (originally released in 1961 and later reactivated as the title track to his 1964 hit album). Other familiar luminaries of soul performing their lesser know sides are Little Milton, Ruth Brown, Mitty Collier, The Miracles, Johnnie & Joe and Dakota Staton who graces our cover. But the real stars of this set are the largely unknown, forgotten and unsung heroes Jimmy Rogers, Jeanie Allen, Sally Stanley, Paul Perryman, Calvin And Clarence and Clentt Gant.
