Critics and concertgoers love his live performances and call him a living blues legend. Record collectors of soul and funk 45s consider many of his early recordings on wax as a "must have", some even as "holy grails". No matter what Roy Roberts means to you, an album which collects his sought after 45rpm single tracks was long overdue.

Roy Roberts became hooked on music while growing up in a small town in Tennessee, listening to blues and R&B on radio stations WLAC out of Nashville. When he turned 18, he moved to Greensboro, North Carolina to live with an uncle. Roy sharpened his skills while playing in makeshift bands until he landed a job with local hero Guitar Kimbers' Untouchables. Before long, Roy was backing up major artists who came through town. One of those artists, Solomon Burke, took young Roy under his wing after letting him sit in as a bass player during a local gig. He was soon handling the guitar chores behind the future soul legend on tour. Roberts subsequently picked up touring gigs with such luminaries as Eddie Floyd, "Little" Stevie Wonder, and Otis Redding, while fronting his own band, The Roy Roberts Experience, on the regional club scene and South-eastern beach town circuit.

Roy began to cut records in the mid-sixties, staying mostly behind the scenes as a session man. The tragic death of Otis Redding inspired him to step up to the microphone with a song dedicated to the late crooner. The record was released on Nina Simone's NinaAndy label and backed by an ace studio band. Roy followed this successful effort with a string of 45's that carried him well into the seventies. During the disco years, Roy turned his talents to country music. After a brief hiatus from the music scene, Roberts got the blues fever once again in the early 1990s. Besides recording his own material Roy continues to record and produce records for his label, and tours the U.S. and Europe regularly.

'Red Hot Mama' is a cracking mid-50s R&B number that will bless any DJ set or record collection. The personnel and indeed the singer - known only as 'S. Johnson' - remain something of a mystery, though it's known to have been recorded in New Orleans for the Chess label, and certainly the second line drum rolls sound highly reminiscent of NOLA session drummer Charles 'Hungry' Williams. Either way, this is yet another unissued gem making its first appearance on 45rpm vinyl on the Jukebox Jam imprint.

Beautiful group vocal rhythm & blues from Vernon Green & The Medallions, 'A Lovers Prayer' is a smouldering gem guaranteed to get the dancefloor moving. Laid back, subtle and played in minor key, the song also epitomizes the kind of moody mid-tempo R&B tunes which caught on with the Belgian popcorn scene - records whose understated feel meant they were likely neglected on other music scenes for a good while. But not now!

"Good Feeling", released in the summer of 2015, marked the return of Jay W. McGee from Michigan/USA, one of the most distinctive voices of the boogie era during the Eighties. Recorded by Hamburg/Germany producer team and boogie crew The Unbelievable Two. "Good Feeling" was an authentic and soulful translation of Jay W. McGee's vocal and songwriter style into the new millennium.

McGee and The Unbelievable Two's Mzuzu became friends and stayed in touch, making more fresh music. The result is a double A-side, "Perfection" and "Love In Motion". While "Perfection is an irresistible, uptempo boogie tune designed for the disco dance floor, the ballad "Love in Motion" is one of the stand-out cuts from the recent session of this multi-generation, cross-continental boogie crew.

The name Johnny Stark may ring a bell for those who have followed us during the last years. He was the singer on Duffy Jackson's monster version of the James Brown classic "I Feel Good" which we re-issued on 45 as well as on the deep-funk comp "Feeling Nice Vol.2". Obviously we were pretty much surprised when we learned that Johnny Stark released this modern soul 2-sider some years later. Totally different in sound but with the same quality as the aforementioned release. Jamie Lidell has announced his first new album in more than three years. On October 14, he'll release Building a Beginning, the follow-up to his self-titled LP. It features DaRu Jones on drums, Pino Pallodino on bass, and multi-instrumentalist Pat Sansone, along with Kudisan Kai, Traci Brown Bailey, and Tiffany Smith. Justin Stanley and Ben Ash produced. Fremantle seven piece hip hop/jazz outfit Koi Child has announced the release of their debut self-titled album through Pilerats Records. Produced by Kevin Parker the album features the Beats1 & triple j played single Black Panda Koi Child unveiled new single 1-5-9. The buttery, chill-as-you-like cut is the band's second official single off the album. From the elongated horn-based procession that carries this introspective lyrical tale into a psych-tinged euphoria, to the rolling snare introduction, listeners are hooked into the exceptionally realised musical world of Koi Child.

Koi Child recorded their debut recordat Mangebong, on an island south of Perth. Featuring 14 tracks filled withwarm dubby chords, wandering bass lines, crunching drums and masterful lyricism, it doesn't take long for Koi Child to usher us deep into their own brand of magical hypnosis.

"We recorded the album in a little house on an island which included a nerve wracking river crossing on a boat, with a large amount of loaned recording gear. The shack-turned-recording studio made for a really nice vibe: swimming in the river, recording vocals in the kitchen, sinking an ungodly amount of tinnies and encounters with giant weirdo spiders.' says Tom Kenny (keys) of the recording experience.

Tom adds, "Kevin taught us so much about production and songwriting. His mixing brought so much life and glow to tracks we'd heard a thousand times. We'll be forever indebted to him for being so generous with his time, creativity and talent... what a bloke.'

Koi Child finished off 2015 performing as special guests for Tame Impala on their Australian tour and being announced as a Spotify Spotlight feature artist for 2016.

The legendary Screamin' Jay Hawkins was one of pop's most colourful characters, a one-man circus sideshow with some of the most memorable routines - and props - the music world had ever witnessed. Yet the author of the R&B standard 'I Put A Spell On You' was also an accomplished and serious musician, as his many vintage recordings demonstrate.

While Hawkins recorded prolifically during the 1950s and 1969s, he only released three long-players during that same period. The second of these, The Night And Day Of Screaming Jay Hawkins' is not only the rarest, but was for many years considered the strangest. Recorded in London in 1965 with UK session men and issued the following year on Shel Talmy's Planet label, the record's fascinating blend of louche lounge balladry, frantic R&B workouts and cool club groove is now regarded as a quintessential mod-jazz artefact.

Ace's The Planet Sessions' sees the first official reissue for this overlooked gem, and the original album's running time is doubled with unissued stereo variants, alternate takes and a pair of exciting outtakes, all drawn from the original Abbey Road session tapes. Detailed notes spell out Hawkins' various UK sojourns during the mid-1960s. All in all, The Planet Sessions' is not only a reappraisal, but a reaffirmation of the bizarre genius of Screamin' Jay Hawkins

Max Roach's 1960 masterwork, We Insist!, is a suite based on the Civil Rights Movement, and involves variations on the theme of the struggle for African Americans to achieve equality in the United States, a struggle that is still all too relevant still. Roach began composing with lyricst Oscar Brown Jr. in 1959, with the initial intention of having the suite performed in 1963, on the 100th anniversary of The Emancipation Proclamation. Featuring the wonderful Abbey Lincoln on vocals, as well as Booker Little, Julian Priester, Coleman Hawkins, Olatunji, and more, We Insist! is a truly stunning album, one that knows no equal from that time or since, reissued on 180 gram LP with download code.

Setting it off, the heavily progged-out thump of 'The Ramble', a solid mid-tempo floor-quaker, flipping the unmistakable weight of Jimmy Page and Bob Plant. This is followed by the 'C'est La Fête' edit of 'A Little More' - a cheeky flip of a classic late-seventies slow jam by Miss Brenda Russell, famously sampled by Big Pun. This one tried and tested over the past few years to crush a lot of dances, now available on wax for the first time for all you players out there.

Finally, we have 'Gypsy' - the most uptempo cut of the set, this is peak-time fire. So much so, you should maybe have some water at hand. An electro-disco tinged take of a chart-topping early '90s house anthem, this concludes the sophomore release on Excursions, and guarantees this one will stay in the record bag for a long time.

Fresh and new, but rough, layered and head-nodding like classic UK street soul, this is the fifth and for us the best-yet installment in Londoner EYE's excellent, under-the-radar series.

Slinkily slippery and hard-to-pin-down as usual, but rooted in funk and soul connoisseurship.

Two-sided this time — boozier, dizzier and more spaced-out on the flip, smudged with echo and effects, and scraps of horns and singing.

Way down in picturesque Auckland, New Zealand, tucked inside a small basement studio, musician Leonard Charles and his friends secretly paid the ultimate tribute to the seminal release by re-recording the entire 31-track album on live instruments. Brass Horizon only ever had one effort put out onto vinyl. The much sought after "We want to play" on the Minda Mark label. Currently commanding big bucks on the collectors scene. The single also made it onto Keb Darge's Deep Funk lp. Now Super Disco Edits has dug deep again, and unearthed some killer tracks by the band. Brass Horizon were heavily into the Bay Area sound of the mid 70's and especially Tower of Power. The first recording to come to light from these dusty sessions is this one off studio mic take, introducing the band. Our official first time full lenght vinyl release of the James Walsh Gypsy Band album I've got the feeling has been a huge success and are now sold out from the label. As an answer to the demand, we have now pressed a small run of 7" single for the 45 collectors and Dj's. Limited run of 500 only. The 45 is special designed på Hans Jørgen Wærner who also did the original cover art.

Side A: The fantastic uptempo AOR Modern Soul track, I've Got The Feeling was an easy choice as the A side. Smooth soulful sounds for the dancefloor or travelling along the coust of California. The track was also featured on the fantastic Americana - Rock Your Soul on BBE Records.

Side B: Caves of Altamira is a fantastic mid tempo cover of the Steely Dan track. Funky, smooth soulful version with the Tower of Power horns make this as a runner up of the best version of the track.

The James Walsh Gypsy Band is kind of the outfit to go to if you're looking for some blue-eyed soul but, just like Ned Doheny and his sublime reissue on Numero, the band never fully came out of its shell and they were limited to just one album on RCA Victor, 1998's self-tiled LP...until now. I've Got The Feelin' was recorded a year later, in 1979, at the legendary Muscle Shoal Studios, but it never made it out onto the shelves apart from a seriously limited CDR run. Norway's Preservation has thankfully done the right thing by pressing it up on vinyl, and the opening title track is as just as wonderful as the first time we heard - a true soul masterpiece with a clear LA influence. "Looks Like You Got Down In Love" is a funkier, more soulful version of Credence at their deepest, while other highlights include the supremely majestic "It's Over Now", and the tear-jerking "Alabama Eyes". It's a road album, the sort you want to really take in properly. Recommended.

On the hot, summer evening of 8th July 2016, Wah Wah 45s and their four-piece soul band, The Milk, realised a long-time ambition as the epic sounds of 'Favourite Worry' filled a sold-out Union Chapel. Taking to the stage at the iconic venue which has been home to some of London's most legendary live shows, from the first Big Chill events to Björk to Terry Callier, was an honour that was understood by all.

So on that night, accompanied by beautiful string and brass sections, the band delivered a live performance that none of the 800 fans, packed into those hallowed pews, will ever forget.

When you mention certain venue names, bands and labels start to think about live recordings and the Union Chapel is one of them. But it was only when drummer and producer Mitch began sending round rough mixes of the recordings that the band and label realised they had something very special on their hands.

Being a great live band is a fundamental part of what makes The Milk who they are. These recordings really demonstrate the closeness of the four men, their solid work ethic, their exceptional ability as performers and their connection with their fans. But above all, it showcases their songs and songwriting in the best possible way.

And while from the audience's standpoint everything sounded and looked grandiose, the band themselves were living a very memorable experience on stage, as perfectly described by Dan Le Gresley below:

"It's very rare that we get the chance to recreate our music live with the same instrumentation and attitude in which it was first created. The ambiance of the smokey chambers of the Union Chapel was strangely similar to the medieval barn from which the music of Favourite Worry was brought to life. We can't put our fingers on why, maybe the history, maybe the sense of solidarity among us - either way, if you were there then you shared in something truly special. It is for this reason that we are very proud to release this show as our first live album - a gig that we will always cherish.

Our eleven strong ensemble did the Gospel-soaked halls of the Union Chapel venue proud and we are very grateful that our wonderful string section and our awesome brass section were able to join us for the night. With their help, we were able to capture, in a live context, a true reflection of the bands soul for the first time."

Whether it's hearing the vast sound of Wanderlust as it steps up that key in the final moments, or revisiting seldom played hits from the first album, 'Tales From The Thames Delta', there is something here for fans old and new.

Wally Badarou was at the cutting edge musically with his fusion of African grooves with the emerging electro sounds of the early 1980s. His debut album 'Back To Scales' in 1980 has been long out of print and is considered a treasure by many connoisseurs. 
Wally plays synthesizer, co-writing and performing Level 42 often considered their 'fifth member'. He also played with Robert Palmer, Talking Heads, Foreigner, Grace Jones and Manu Dibango. He also known for a later hit single Chief Inspector', and Mambo' from the same year (1984) was sampled by Massive Attack
This is a great album deserving appreciation by a wider audience with such an amazing collection of important songs. It was recorded in France, the country of his birth, originally released on French label, Barclay

Christine Seraphin (also known as Sera Kalo) is a Caribbean-American singer and songwriter born to St. Lucian and Dominican parents and raised on the east coast of the United States. After studying classical piano for nearly 12 years, she began singing and later went to college in New York to begin her musical studies in piano and voice. Parallel to her studies that introduced her to jazz and classical vocal
styles, at home, Christine grew up listening to calypso, reggae, soul, rock and pop music. After graduating and moving to Germany in 2009, she founded and performed with musically diverse ensembles and has made solo performances on international television programs, in stadiums and arenas
across the country. Her most current band, Seraleez was founded in 2010 celebrating Future Soul (a fusion of Soul, Hip Hop and Jazz).

The D.O.C., short for Department of Correction, is a highly skilled battle rhymer from Dallas, USA. In addition to his solo career he was a member of the hip hop group Fila Fresh Crew and later collaborated with gangsta rap group N.W.A where he co-wrote many of their releases. After Fila Fresh Crew split up in 1988, The D.O.C. went on to pursue a successful solo career.
No One Can Do It Better is the debut album by The D.O.C. from 1989 and is produced by the then upcoming Dr. Dre who contributed on most of the fast hard hitting rap tracks with his heavy funk laden beats. The album reached number one on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart for two weeks and spawned two number one hits on the Hot Rap Songs chart: It's Funky Enough' and The D.O.C. & The Doctor'. The album went platinum five years after its release.

Tragically The D.O.C. severed his vocal chords in an almost fatal car accident in November 1989 but No One Can Do It Better still stands the test of time as one of the early pre- Chronic albums.
