The two songs included in this 7-inch, "Spooky" and "Hurt So Bad", directly come Andrea Balducci debut album "Bloom" (Schema Records, 2012, SC 459): two evergreen standards modernized and rearranged in a smooth, refined groovy soul key, a voice inspired by crooners such as Frank Sinatra, Jamie Cullum and Michael Buble, over music played by an exceptional team of musicians. These are songs that speak to the heart.

When the seasoned singer and musician Bobby Oroza lay his gentle voice on tape at the Timmion Labs a year ago, nobody knew what was about to happen. The beat ballad "This Love" on the Stylart sublabel, flew out and the first pressing was sold out within a week. A dj issue was sold for a hundred dollars at an auction even before the record was released. The hype was real.

Originally the lengthy vocal take was spread on two sides, persuading dj's to spin it with two copies to get the full experience. This pleasure can now be extended even further by rocking the instrumental backing by Cold Diamond & Mink before cutting to the vocal. Or, if you prefer it sans vocal, keep it instrumental all the way. Incidentally, not many are aware that Bobby plays the organ here.

Considering the incredibly wide range of styles adopted by Piero Umiliani during his career, it will come as no surprise for you to know that he also produced disco. At that time in Italy disco had still an exotic appeal and was considered apt to accompany a genre of movies that was at once erotic and comic. "Discomusic" is some sort of a white version of a sound that is inherently black, a unique record within Umiliani's discography. The track "Discomania" became popular as the closing theme of 90° Minuto, a famous Italian football TV show.

After a decade of performing at some of the hottest venues on the globe, and with every name who has an agenda for funk, The Haggis Horn's addictive sound and live force has rumbled every joint imaginable. The harmonious seven-piece have conquered most of Europe preserving a legendary presence, with slots on Kendal Calling, Edinburgh Fringe, Cambridge Jazz Festival, 02 Academy, Leeds, Y Not Festival, etc. In addition, the globetrotting act has recorded and supported the likes of Jamiroquai, John Legend & The Roots, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Take That, Mark Ronson and Elbow across the world, and received airtime from BBC Radio 2, Radio 6, Reform Radio and Craig Charles Funk & Soul. 2017 sees another huge year for The Haggis Horns, and the hype for one helluva anticipated drop has only just begun.

Bobby Sheen first began singing in late 50s and early 60s vocal groups out of Los Angeles, working with Clyde McPhatter of The Drifters, Phil Spector and even Walt Disney. He recorded singles of note for Capitol (including Dr. Love') and Warner Brothers where Phillip Mitchell penned this evergreen Something New To Do', originally a B side to the also popular modern soul favourite I May Not be What You Want' in 1972, though reversed the following year. This is the first reissue since those two initial releases in the 70s which have become extremely collectable, mint originals selling for over £100.

Both these songs are arranged by Gene Page from the heyday of his work in the 70s with Barry White. Lushly orchestrated, Takin' My Time With You' has the additional benefit of being an awesome 'modern soul' dance record, a track largely undiscovered until recently and now heavily in demand. The original 7' released in 1976 is impossible to find and has exchanged hands for £500. Maureen Bailey is from and was contracated as a songwriter with Motown. She worked with artists including Thelma Houston, 5th Dimension, Jermaine Jackson and Syreeta. She recorded three singles as a solo artist.

Otis Junior & Dr.Dundiff have a special bond. They met one year ago at a local R&B contest in Louisville. Dr.Dundiff was the DJ of the night and Otis Junior happened to be the only contestant he had never heard of. He took the stage just playing piano and singing and Dr.Dundiff was so blown away that they ended up in the studio together shortly after. They released their debut EP "1moment2another" on Jakarta Records only very few months after they had first met in early 2016. And it's was widely appreciated with heavy daytime rotation on french gate keeper radio station Nova, many appreciating blog as well as a feature on Radio Nova's "le grand Mix 2016" compilation. Despite the fact they have not been working together for a long time they managed to create their very own and unique take on hip hop production influenced soul music. While Otis comes from a classic soul background, Dundiff's previous release were classic underground leftfield hip hop records that even had him handle mic duties. "Consider each of us as one hemisphere, the world we create together is new, different, and unexpected." is how Otis Junior summarizes their approach of bringing their two worlds together musically. Dundiff's organic yet hard hitting productions compliment Otis Junior soulful timbre perfectly while they were able to perfect their style even further comparing their debut EP to their debut album "Hemispheres". Their top notch reputation led to them supporting Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings in Sydney, jamming live with Breakestra and becoming THE in demand band south of the equator. With a musical CV that includes names like Joe Bataan, Alice Russell, Mark de Clive-Lowe and The Quantic Soul Orchestra, as well as the world beating outfit The Bamboos, it's not surprising this latest CO3B album has generated huge interest even prior to its' release. Their first Freestyle album 'Baked, Broiled or Fried' featured the group in a hardcore funk groove but on 'Soul Messin' sees the sound, feel and influences widened further with some quite magical results. 'Jardín' is Gabriel Garzón-Montano's debut album, out January 2017 on Stones Throw Records. Gabriel Garzón-Montano's formidable skills have come to fruition on his Stones Throw debut. 'This album came out of wanting to make music that reminds people how beautiful life is and how delicate their heart is,' he said. 'I've always wanted to make music that is healing, comforting, and funky. I named the album 'Jardín' hoping for it to create a space for healing when people put it on.
'A garden is full of life, growth and beauty,' Gabriel said of choosing that unifying image as the title for his new album. 'It makes me think of green and white and all the colors as they appear in different flowers.' That vivid spectrum bursts forth on 'Jardín' itself and the album contains references to fruit of all sorts, sour mango, juicy tangerines and sweet peaches.
From the heartache and aching vocals that float over the dusty drums of 'Crawl' to the stutter-step thump of 'Bombo Fabrika' to the high falsetto he nails on 'Octave,' GarzónMontano proves himself to already be one of 2017's biggest breakout talents.

One of the best mid-tempo disco raritys (and we mean rare) to come out the Deepfunk scene. When Keb Darge first played 'Party & Get On Down' in the early 2000s in Soho it put a few noses out of joint as it was such a departure from the deepfunk driving take no prisoner sound. True to Keb's Scottish stubbornness and like any real DJ he stuck to his guns and created a dance floor favourite. Athens of the north bring BAB to 12" for the first time, not only that but its a nice wee extended cut transferred direct from the master tapes. No brainier if you got class.

Two time Grammy winning producer Terrace Martin (Snoop, Kendrick Lamar, Herbie Hancock) started his own label - Sounds Of Crenshaw - under the Ropeadope umbrella with the release of Velvet Portraits. The core band is Terrace Martin, Curly Martin, Robert 'Sput' Searight (Snarky Puppy), and Brandon Eugene Owens. Guests include vocalists Rose Gold, Tone Treasure, Uncle Chucc & The Emotions, and Lalah Hathaway. Featured guests are Kamasi Washington, Robert Glasper, Thundercat, and Tiffany Gouche.

Much interest domestically and abroad has been generated over the years about an indie soul label in San Diego, CA called Musette Records, whose short life span (1965-1968) only produced less than 20 singles, and no full albums. More than 40 years later, Musette would achieve the collectible status among record buyers of northern soul, who recognize and appreciate the R&B grooves that pulsated on these now extremely rare singles.

Musette Records was not started as a true record label, but as a sideline project and reported tax write-off for then prominent Black doctors in San Diego. After jointly putting up the start-cost, each doctor would additionally put up the money to sponsor a Musette artist. In turn, the doctor would be given the production credit, even though he had absolutely nothing to do with the resulting sessions.

One of the earliest singles on Musette was by Lani Groves, which later achieved fame as part of Stevie Wonder's background singing group, Wonderlove in the 70s. Ervin Rucker, whose actual name was Ervin Groves, was the Hawaiian father of Lani Groves. He started out as a pianist and composer in the 1950s. After he released his sole single on Musette he changed his name to Big Daddy Rucker in the late 60s. At the same time he founded his own GME label on which Little Mary Staten and Dede Copeland released those songs which you find here.

With literally no sales, airplay or distribution, the doctors collectively tossed in the towel and closed the label in the late 1960s. Despite its short existence, Musette Records in San Diego was one of the most important soul labels of the day. The label's artists all had promise and a vision but they could not fulfill their dream. This collection helps to preserve the history of the San Diego soul sound.

The mysterious Cecil Moses & The S.G.'s (Oliver Klomp - drums, Colin Higgins - guitar, Bob Heinemann - bass, and Marc Hager - keys) unite with deep funk pioneer Lucky Brown to interpret Lucky's original "Mesquite Suite," a collection of spiritual folk/jazz modal melodies fused with earthy and arcane rhythms composed in the summer of 2015 in an ashram in the Texas Hill Country.

The S.G.'s, who specialize in their own brand of great quartet instrumental soul ala Booker T. & The M.G.'s and The Meters, adapted quickly to Lucky's experimental, rudimentary, vernacular, and minimalist approach. One thing you will notice in these tunes is that the vast space created by the musicians and the composition is what allows the FEEL to filter through, and for Lucky Brown, FEEL is what it is all about.

This first single presents the themesong of their collection, a deep tribal shuffle, "Mesquite Beat," upon which Jason Cressey - trombone, and Thomas Deakin - sax, offer their own explorations. The flip is an upbeat and minimal pentatonic anthem entitled "Justice," featuring Lucky Brown himself on funk flute.

With this release, we are proud to introduce the first installment of the "Mesquite Suite" collection on Tramp's own special limited imprint: "Tramp Tapes," a suite of original, raw deep funk inspired as much by Mulatu Astatke as it is James Brown.

The Fruit Band's fleeting existence was only recently revealed by the discovery of a few unsold copies of their sole 1978 single,Say It, which quickly became a cult showpiece for savvy DJs and collectors. Athens of the North has since reached out to Cypress Studios of Jacksonville, Florida and discovered a complete album of the group's stylish, dancefloor-smashing funk and deep disco on tape, unreleased for over 30 years. Here we present out two favirite unreleased tracks on 45 for the first time. 500 Only no repress.

Sun, Skyy, Earth Wind & Fire..., Brooklyn-based IGBO (Indigo Green Brown Orange) reflect an elemental foundation of classic '70s and '80s funk and soul through a prism of hip arrangements and decidedly modern production befitting the diverse set of talented stage performers and composers they are. Marvellously macabre popcorn magic from Chance Halladay, last seen on the popcorn label with his great take on '13 Women'. Here he is in a much more sombre mood, as he laments on his sins and wrongdoings and pleads to be sent to his only fitting redemption place - the grave. All set to the delicious, slinky minor key melody and swinging jazz rhythm that typifies the popcorn sub-genre. The flip side 'Deep Sleep' is only slightly less sinister, as Chance promises to hypnotise his lover into a state of slumber.

Uptown Syndicate Band was formed in Norman,Oklahoma May 1971. The band spanned nine years and had nearly 50 members. Uptown were renowned for high energy performances of Funk, Rhythm and Blues with soulful ballads mixed in

Uptown was born out of the fraternity and sorority parties at Oklahoma University, especially the Alpha-Phi-Alpha and as their popularity grew, encompassing campuses all over. The group consisted of a powerful horn section, two strong vocalists, and a serious rhythm section that would have matched JBs, The fact they never recorded a few Lps is a crying shame, but here we have their 4 recordings in their delightful and varied glory

Best known as one-half of soul duo Myron & E, Newark native Eric 'E' Cooke aka E Da Boss is the definition of a multifaceted artist. It began with DJing and a love of hip-hop, which eventually turned into producing, and ultimately brought him to singing and songwriting both alongside Myron and on his own.

Since then Myron & E have toured the world and released their own music (Stones Throw) as well as collaborated with c with The Soul Investigators (Timmion Records) , The Soul Surfers (Ubiquity Records), in the meantime E has contributed vocals to a track for UK sensation The Gene Dudley Group's sophomore album on Wah Wah 45s, as well as releasing material under the moniker Lucid Paradise alongside Ishtar on The Whole Truth Records and a few 45s as part of The Pendletons on his own independent label Slept On Records. It's an exciting time for fans of E's music, as it appears new sounds are on the horizon, starting with this limited edition 45!

"This Is the Moment" was originally released as the B-side of "Lord Please Hear my Prayer", a rare 45 published by Cipiti Records, written by Tony Benn Feghaly and Sante Palumbo, it's an amazing gospel-soul song interpreted by Edith Peters. In only two minutes and a half The Sante Palumbo Orchestra accompanies Peters' entrancing voice, delivering a groovy and intense interpretation. The original 1973 version of the song is here featured as a B-side, while Gerardo Frisina signs the A-side of this reissue with a rework of the track - doubling the length and adding his signature rhythm patterns.

Originally released in December 2015, Marta Ren & The Groovelvets "I'm Not Your Regular Woman" 45 went sold out in few weeks and became a regular spin on funk soul dancefloors. If you've missed the 45 the first around, you better get on it quickly as this it's limited to 150 copies worldwide. On the flip side there's the afro-tastic scorcher "Be Ma Fela". The 2 tracks are taken from 2016 Marta Ren & The Groovelvets' impressive debut album Stop Look Listen. Our Portughuise soul sister is currently on Tour and has just ignites stages of The Trans Musicale and Eurosonic 2017.

Nathan Bartell grew up in a little town called Ashburn, Georgia but soon moved to Atlanta Georgia where he began to perform in the night clubs. In 1973 he released "Top Going Down, Bottom Going Up" on the Soul-Po-Tion label. Bartell remembers: "At the time I was having family problems. My wife didn't want me and I was deep in love. I felt at that time that I was at the bottom of the pit and I wanted to rise up out of that mess because my wife made me feel that I was a nobody. I was not good enough for her - nobody wants you when you are down and out. She felt that she were on the top and I was on the bottom. This song was a message at that time." There is nothing for us to add except that we are delighted to bring this little beauty back to new life.
