Biosis Now / Afro Train - Bahamas Tropical Funk Vs Ivory Coast Afro Funk

After Mukatsuku Records summer Hammond Organ screamer from Billy Hawks (MUKAT 052) the label goes deep on an international funk tip. Few years ago label manager Nik played in France and the promoter pulled out a Biosis now 45 that he never knew existed up till then and was generally thought to be a long album track only. An extensive search revealed nothing online including popsike/discogs/ebay except a tropical seller who'd just bought a huge caribbean collection with the record included saying he'd never seen it before either and he was keeping it...Failing to secure a copy themselves the label licensed it instead and created their own 45 edit which retains all the funk & soul of the elongated album version into a 7 inch friendly format. On the flipside and 1973 Tumba Safari from Afro Train get's a funky afrobeat re touch for peak time club play that would save you several hundred pounds on an original if you could actually find a copy !

Re-issue with a new lower price !! For starters, this platter begins with one of the great intros of all time: Ladies and gentlemen, there are seven acknowledged wonders of the world. You are about to witness the eighth...' Lodged in a deep groove between the JB's' debut LP Food For Thought (1972) and the more complex and at-times political Damn Right, I Am Somebody (from 1974) sits the ridiculously vampy and infectious classic, Doing It To Death. First moving hips and making heads nod in 1973, the James Brown-produced, 5-song album is one big funk lick, broken up into many delicious moving parts. As with pretty much everything produced by the JB's - led by Fred Wesley with heavy help from a supporting cast that included saxophonist Maceo Parker, guitarists Jimmy Nolen and Hearlon Cheese' Martin and drummer John Jabo' Starks - all songs began and revolved around a devastating riff. The title track is most certainly guilty-as-charged, as it starts strutting right out of the gate and continues for just over 10 minutes, driven by a guitar lick and MCed by the inimitable James Brown, with soloists stepping up and out while the song chugs on. The other centerpiece of the album is the 8-minute You Can Have Watergate Just Gimme Some Bucks And I'll Be Straight,' whose groove is interestingly teased two times before it arrives in full form. The song title itself is provocative, and the music keeps a stone-cold groove despite the less than cheery undertones. Again driven by an infectious guitar morsel, the breakdowns in this song gave sampling producers and DJs sweet dreams in the '80s, and Fred Wesley's trombone solo rides beautifully over the group's cries of We need some money.' Beyond the aforementioned sure-shots, the twitchy More Peas,' La Di Da La Di Day' and the much jazzier, solo-heavy Sucker' round out this incredible album. It's just another perfect example of how James Brown's funk machine could stop the world when they hit a groove.

Mystique - If Youre In Need / Spoiled Like A Baby

Mystique were a Chicago group formed by Ralph Johnson, former leader with The Impressions after Curtis Mayfield and LeRoy Hutson. In 1977 they released a self-titled album at Curtom records and five singles, none of which were this show stopping version of If You're In Need', a Grey & Hanks composition performed and produced everywhere as near good as the better known version by Lenny Williams. In the year 2000, the album was issued on CD with previously unissued bonus tracks including Spoiled Like A Baby', a song recorded in 1977 by American pop duo Addrisi Brothers, but this version by Mystique is far superior and highly in demand modern soul room dancer on vinyl, facilitated here by Expansion

Various - International Disco Mafia

Irish label Fatty Fatty spreads its wings with their 'International Disco Mafia' EP.
Extending from Dublin out to Drogheda and Galway and onward overseas, the EP provides something peak-time for all tastes.

The lead off track sees label top dog Pablo going off on a solo tip, delivering an end of nighter take on an eternal UK street Soul classic. Chopping together many different mixes to create an epic whole, this one has been road-tested thoroughly, and always brings the house down.

While Pablo was fiddling around endlessly with that one, usual production partner Shoey slithered off with newcomer Kellser to produce a dreamy, stretched out take on a late 70's staple , another guaranteed winner, and possibly the most bliss inducing song ever to run at 130BPM

The international part of the EP comes from Italian edit king Belabouche, who delivers a lovely take on 'Willie and The Hand Jive'.
Last but not least, Galway boy Island Time makes his bow with a straight up, brassy slice of soulful Disco aimed straight at the dancefloor...

Broomfield Corporate Jam - Stop

Vocalist and mult- instrumentalist family theBroomfield's might be new to you but Deepfunk heads know the deal. The six Broomfield siblings (vocalist, Diane and her 5 brothers) released some of the best Rare groove 12s and 45s in the 1980s (Although this 45 was recorded in 1979) as well as recording with Betty Wright, KC and the Sunshine Band, Timmy Thomas, Little Beaver, Julio Iglesias, Michael Sterling and many, many more.

Championed by Keb Darge and others on the Deepfunk scene in the early 2000s, this record has remained agonisingly elusive, despite being very popular as both sides are brilliant. So, with the help of Symphonical records we got in touch with Aaron and made this happen, look out for Aaron's 45 dropping soon as well.

Two Another - Two Another Ep

London-based act Two Another emerged at the end of last year with debut track 'Higher', an addictively slinky and nocturnal pop tune. Inspired by the decadent end of 70's soul and pages from J Dilla's production book the track features ethereal house synths, catchy vocals and an irresistible bass-line.

It quickly turned heads, winning them the attention of tastemakers such as Majestic Casual, Indie Shuffle, Hilly Dilly, Discobelle and Blah Blah Blah Science, whilst also clocking over a million plays across Soundcloud, YouTube and Spotify.

Their second offering 'Keeping Me Under' went even further to cement excited intrigue with its smooth hook-laden vocals and bass line reminiscent of the Motown era. It raced up the Hype Machine chart and clocked up hundreds of thousands of plays through word of mouth, leading them to be featured in Pigeons and Planes' '20 Artists About To Blow, According To Social Media'.

The story continues with the announcement of Two Another's self-titled debut EP, which combines their two tracks to date with third offfering 'Shouldnt Have Done That'. The latter
presents a more stripped back and emotive element of their sound, with wistful falsetto vocals laid over an enticingly minimal beat.

As a body of work, the debut EP introduces an outfit with a vibrant and accomplished sonic poise, rich musical references and songs that are instantly infectious. With a lot more in the pipeline for 2016, it's the perfect opportunity to start watching out for Two Another.

The Eminent Stars - Bar Shift

The Eminent Stars were founded by saxophonist Ben Mendes and drummer Toon Oomen. They both share the love for the great music emerging from cities like New Orleans in the 60's and 70's: Dr. John, Freddie King, The Meters and many more! Just mix up some soul, Rhythm & Blues, funk and Blues and there you have it: a sound that consists of authentic elements: it's danceable, intriguing, vibrant and fresh!

Their debut Sittin' In (Tramp TRLP/CD-9035) was released in february 2014, accompanied by a 45RPM single to support the album. In the past three years the Eminent Stars heavily toured in
their home country as well as Europe. They kept writing new songs and here we go with two new, fresh cuts. "Bar Shift" features guest vocalist Bruce James while "Brown Thang" is a smokin' blues-funk instrumental. These two sides give you an excellent foretaste of their second full length album, scheduled for release in early 2018.

Various - An Introduction Part 3

* Over the past six years, Dimensions has become a leading name in the underground, with its festival, International Series, DJ Directory and Dimensions Soundsystem. Now, Dimensions extends its influence with the start of its label - Dimensions Recordings. The label launches with a 12-track compilation across three separate discs. 'An Introduction' makes a huge statement in setting out the label's intent and breadth. With artists established and new stepping up to present 12 exclusive tracks.

* Dimensions Recordings explores its darker side on An Introduction Part 3 with intergalactic oddities and twisted techno constructions, the release is definitely ones for the late hours. 'Crosstalk' from gear heads London Modular Alliance opens; a squelching, electro, hardware excursion demonstrating a small snippet of what's to come from the talented trio. Next, French artist, Upwellings steps up to demonstrate his purist approach as he unites elements of dub and techno to create the beautifully spacey 'Soft Shadows'. The third offering comes courtesy of Fachwerk label boss and prolific techno artist, Mike Dehnert; who presents raw but melodic track in 'Tokio,'which maintains his minimal and stripped back aesthetic beautifully. Chicago's Steven Tang in his Obsolete Music Technology rounds off the release with 'Comb Freq,' a devastatingly powerful mix of acidic, bleeping dance floor energy!

Jordan Rakei - Wallflower

Jordan Rakei

Wallflower

2x12inchZEN245
Ninja Tune
22.09.2017

Newly signed to Ninja Tune, Jordan Rakei has battled his inner demons and written an inspirational, soul-stirring record in the process.

At only 25, the multi-instrumentalist, vocalist and producer - born in New Zealand to a Kiwi mother and father from the Cook Islands - is a rare talent whose distinct take on soul captures a sonic and emotional awareness many artists spend their entire careers chasing. He writes with a maturity and flair that belies his years and new album Wallflower' sees Jordan edging beyond the peripheries of the genial, often sun-flecked sound his fans have come to know him for. The easy swing that has been the backbone of his sound from the outset is ever present, harking back to teenage days spent in his bedroom with his beloved MPC trying to emulate 9th Wonder and Pete Rock. On Wallflower' the tools and the process have evolved - the focus is on live instrumentation - but the groove and the cadence are unmistakable, framing soul and jazz in a truly vibrant oeuvre that simultaneously recalls his predecessors The Roots and peers The Internet, Nick Hakim and Hiatus Kaiyote.

Jordan's whirlwind rise has been a predominately solo effort. His exceptional musical ability (he writes, sings and plays most of the instrumentation on his records himself) is accompanied by an unrelenting - yet agreeably humble - ambition. His aptitude and knack for songwriting caught the attention of tastemakers following the release of his 2014 EP "Groove Curse'. His self-released debut album Cloak' (2016) lit the blue touch paper, earning him a coveted set at Pitchfork Avant-Garde Block Party that year, supports for the likes of Jamie Woon and NAO, and a call-up to play AMP. Drawing early support from the Soulection crew, he has collaborated with Taku, Tom Misch, FKJ, and lent vocals to the Disclosure track 'Masterpiece' (from their 2015 album Caracal') after the duo were tipped off by a friend who had seen Jordan play a tiny basement bar in Australia. At radio, Jordan has been championed at BBC R1/1Xtra by Annie Mac, Huw Stephens, Mistajam, Jamz Supernova, Toddla T plus Mary Anne Hobbs and Gilles Peterson at BBC Radio 6 Music.

Jordan considers Wallflower' his most personal work yet - it's an emotive opus inspired by his own struggles with introversion and anxiety. Sonically lush and complex, yet lyrically relatable and unguarded, listeners are offered a glimpse into the mind and artistry of a musician who grapples with his own self- image and fears every day. On 'Sorceress' (recently supremely reworked by Photay) the ego is personified as a sinister and controlling spirit figure led by equal parts understated ethereal guitar and Jordan's superb multi-layered vocals. New single 'Nerve', featuring Dave Okumu of The Invisible on guitar, is upbeat and incites a sense of renewal as its lyrics call out the fallacies within self-constructed paradigms. Elsewhere, the ska-tinged 'Clues Blues' is laced with trombone and saxophone by Ahmad Dayes and Wayne Francis II from South London pillars United Vibrations.

"It's about how the ego can fully control the way you act and perceive life,' he says. Jordan's decision to leave his home in Brisbane for London in 2015 has had a life changing effect on his music, his career and his outlook. Just thinking about a 10,000 mile relocation was traumatic, and these feelings were exacerbated by his introversion and anxiety. However, he plucked up the courage to make the move and never looked back.

In Australia, I was stuck in a bubble', Jordan explains. "When I moved to London I had to deal with my introversion through 'exposure therapy'. Every day I met new people for a whole year. I met every producer, songwriter, and musician I could. You have to improve as a person to improve as an artist'. Building a new community in London, Jordan linked with Tom Misch, Loyle Carner, Richard Spaven and Alfa Mist - musical likeminds experimenting on the fringes of jazz, soul and hip-hop - and also met Bradley Zero, founder of South London record label and party Rhythm Section. Bradley encouraged him to try his hand at a collection of dancefloor-driven tunes which became the EP "Joy, Ease, Lightness", released by the label at the end of 2016 under the alias Dan Kye.

In many ways Wallflower' is a direct emotional response to his new surroundings and is undoubtedly testament to Jordan's personal strength, drive and overriding passion for his art as well as a reflection of his openness and eagerness to reach out and explore London's fertile music underground. It cements not only his importance as a contemporary, and truly exhilarating, soul voice on the international stage, but his stature as a producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist in total command of his sonic vision.

The Aristocrats - Lets Get Together Now/ Loving You Is Mellow
  • A1: Lets Get Together Now
  • B1: Loving You Is Mellow

The Aristocrats were originally from Bridgeport, Connecticut, but came to Philadelphia in 1973 where they recorded five tracks with Bobbi Eli at Sigma Sound Studios. Only one single was released, the Philly classic Let's Get Together now' on Warner Brothers Records. Original pressings can fetch up to £150. The Expansion pressing here is extra special as the 'b' side Loving You Is Mellow' has never previously been released on 7' or vinyl. It is in fact the original version of a song later made famous by Major Harris but in it's own right an exceptional piece of Philly magic.

The Voices Of East Harlem - Cashing In / Take A Stand

Repress!

The Voices Of East Harlem were an ensemble of vocalists who for Just Sunshine Records recorded two albums under the direction of Leroy Hutson and Curtis Mayfield. Cashing In' is one of their most classic songs, a highly sought after track on original 7' fetches between £40 and £80 on the collectors market. First recorded and released in 1973 it has all the hallmarks of a Leroy Hutson composition and an established audience that crosses the boundaries of northern, crossover and modern soul. The song is coupled here with Take A Stand', another highly regarded and sought after modern soul room dance floor tracks, never previously released on 7' single until now

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators - Keep Reachin' Up

Singer Nicole Willis and Worlds premiere Funk band The Soul Investigators released their debut album Keep Reachin Up on 17th of November 2005. The album was released by Helsinki based Timmion Records.

The albums lead single "If This Ain t Love (Don t Know What Is)" was nominated by Gilles Peterson of BBC as one of the best songs of the year 2005. An up-tempo, inspired and deceivingly simple track, "If This Ain't Love" brings to mind releases by legendary soul labels such as Motown and current music by the likes of Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. Peaking at number 4 on the national Finnish charts, "If This Ain't Love" has been lauded by the Rare Groove connoisseurs as Northern Soul for the new millennium.

Keep Reachin Up is sure-shot album that is not to be missed.

Buddy Hank & The Shine Band - Try My Love/close To You

Well how do you follow up Young and Companys smash hits on Brunswick records. Pretty hard I hear you say. After the best seller "I like what you are doing to me" the group carried on talks with the heads at Brunswick. There was a stale mate on contract details and buddy hankerson decided to shelve the few demos he had recorded with his new group Buddy Hank and The Shine Band. We grabbed the reels from his brothers place on the East Coast and thought we couldn't miss the opportunity to get them transferred and hear what was on them....We wasn't disappointed!

E.r.i.c (extra Rich In Class) - Nightlife/backstage

E.R.I.C (Extra Rich In Class) is the performing alter-ego of Mr Eric Oliver Harris a former New York banker, who turned his back on Wall Street and the world of commerce during 2008 to follow his dream of being a full time musician and boy! He hasn't looked back since. It was E.R.I.C's 2008 self penned, 'Drama' project which initially brought him to the attention of UK Indie Soul fans followed by his 2011 Groove' project from which several of his tracks were licensed by the then UK based Soul Unsigned Label for a compilation album. E.R.I.C's involvement with Soul Junction came about through the licensing of his 2012 outing Backstage' a track that really tore the airwaves of internet radio up and as such was a must for inclusion on the Soul Junction Extra Rich In Soul' (SJCD5007) compilation, the album title being a play on Extra Rich In Class' to E.R.I.C's delight.

Back then, many people asked us to release Backstage in a 45 format but for whatever reason this never materialised. Moving forward E.R.I.C continued to perform unabated with his one man show performing primarily as a Luther Vandross Tribute act but always included his own material as part of the overall stage show.

During the summer of 2016 E.R.I.C returned to the UK airwave's with yet another vanity project The Night Life' EP, a five track set that featured the excellent songs life's A Mess' and Playboy To Playboy'. But it was the title track Nightlife' that ignited the radio jocks interest and for that matter Soul Junction's too. So a plan was hatched to release for the first time on a vinyl format two of E.R.I.C's most popular songs. So before you, you now have the soulfully haunting ballad Backstage' backed with the joyously uplifting feel good dance track Nightlife' which I defy even the most stoic amongst you not to start tapping your toes along too.

Asta Hiroki - Channels / Vulnerable

Continuing his luscious ambient beat explorations in jazz, post-Dilla hip hop and leftfield electronica Asta Hiroki produces a stunning instrumental piece in 'Channels' and cleverly enlists the help of forward-thinking producer/vocalist Suzi Analogue (Never Normal Records, Fresh Selects) to contribute the vocals on the emotive 'Vulnerable'.

In-demand as both a producer and a vocal artist, Ms. Analogue brings a neo soul twist à la Erykah Badu to Asta's gorgeous arrangement. Lyrically focusing on shedding the various masks people wear and allowing oneself to be completely themselves, she showcases all the attributes that have made her a favourite of online press like FACT, The Fader, Okayplayer, Paper Mag. It's a perfect match of styles from these two artists with the tune carrying a liberating and relevant message in today's image-focused world.

'Channels' is a jazzed-out slice of leftfield hip hop and electronica, taking cues from the likes of Robert Glasper, Bonobo and Shigeto. As per its name it perfectly captures the meditative and ever-moving nature of water with no 2 bars the same throughout. Powerful low end frequencies underpin the beautiful flowing keys work and fluttering organic percussion to keep it ever-evolving and exerting a calming influence on the listener.

Bosq - Can't Seem To Hide / Take Me There

"'Can't Seem To Hide' will be a bona fide classic of 2017 thanks to its combination of a party-time keyboard line over a relentless groove and Megan Doherty's hypnotic vocal. Nicole Willis can do no wrong, either, as she steps up to deliver further damage on the flip." -Mixmag 10/10 March 2017 Tune Of The Month

Bosq's new single sees him diving deeper into funky disco, creating songs that are more musical but maintain the rawness that translates to a feeling on the dancefloor.

The A-side features a collaboration between Bosq and vocalist Megan Doherty from Social Lovers which has already garnered a "tune of the month" feature and a 10/10 rating from Mixmag. Mark Usher's funk-laden rhythm guitar attack punctuates the song while Megan's silky smooth vocal delivery glide on top of the Bosq-crafted groove with an understated cool and sexiness that permeate the entire track.

The featured vocalist on the flip of this double A-side disco burner is none other than soul-highness herself Nicole Willis, who was featured on Bosq's previous single "Bad For Me". Her powerful vocal style reminiscent of disco divas past along with Mark channeling his inner "Nile Rodgers" delivers yet another future dancefloor classic.

Calling Medellin, Colombia home for the time being, these 2 tracks were the last songs Bosq made in his US studio. Seeking inspiration and surrounded by a new landscape literally and musically while finding new partners to collaborate with on projects such as Body Music with The Rapture's drummer Vito Roccoforte he continues to hone his craft. Along with dropping the Tumbala EP on Soul Clap, the full-length album San Jose 51 recorded in Puerto Rico with the Candela All-Stars and his various remix work for Fania, and Cultures Of Soul to name a few, Bosq's relentless work ethic, output and openness to further develop his sound can only mean good things for Latin, Afro, Disco, Funk, and Soul aficionados alike.

Sugaray Rayford - The World That We Live In

  • 4: What Do We Own
  • 5: Home Again
  • 6: Keep Moving

  • 8: Ain't Got No Business To Die
  • 9: The Boogey Man
  • 10: Troubles

Blind Faith Records is proud to unveil one of soul/blues music's true hidden gems, Caron 'Sugaray' Rayford. At 6'5,' Sugaray is a vocal giant in every sense, but on stage he moves with pure grace and energy.

His music has even been endorsed by the legendary Brian Wilson, who could hear the star quality in this undiscovered jewel. Somehow, to most people, he has managed to slip through the net, but not any more. Italian soul ambassador Luca Sapio made it his mission to bring Sugaray's music to the forefront and tracked him down to record his latest album, 'The World That We Live In.' It was recorded in Luca's analogue studio in Italy, with racks of vintage gear and a killer house band. What they have so magically created is an album which sounds like an instant classic.

When Sugaray belts out a song, you not only hear it, you feel it. The excitement in the room is palpable when he takes to the stage, his dynamic voice is large just like the man and stands up to comparisons with all-time greats of soul, blues and old-school R&B such as Solomon Burke, Muddy Waters, Otis Redding and Teddy Pendergrass.

Texas-born Sugaray began his musical career at the tender age of seven, singing and playing drums in church, and his gospel influences definitely shine through in his music. The soulful gravel in his voice hints at his first-hand experience with hardship, and a childhood marked by poverty and loss.

With the help of Blind Faith Records, Sugaray is focused on presenting his latest project, 'The World That We Live In,' a collection of ten original songs and his debut soul album, to the world. It carries the gift of universal appeal that towers above tastes and trends, and it's an album destined to become an instant classic.

Bob & Gene - If This World Were Mine

+2 Bonus Tracks
