Recording and touring together on and off for several years now, sonic journeyman DJ Vadim and Californian songwriter Katrina Blackstone unveil their long awaited full-length album 'Double Sided', released on BBE Music. After providing a pair of stellar guest appearances on Vadim's 2014 'Dubcatcher' album, Katrina Blackstone joined Vad on tour and the duo have been steadily laying down tracks ever since. Eschewing samples in favour of drum machines, guitars and a dizzying array of synths, Vadim's compositions on 'Double Sided' range from dubby downtempo grooves to upbeat afroboogie business. Katrina's crystal clear vocals, catchy melodies and highly relatable lyrics provide the perfect foil for Vadim's raw productions.
Katrina Blackstone has previously worked with cult downtempo artists Bluetech & Dr Israel, as well as appearing alongside Killah Priest on the sadly unreleased "Legba's Light" project created by Ron Carter, Brian Jackson and Mike Clark. Born in Tennessee, she studied vocal performance and jazz at the prestigious New School University in New York before moving
the San Francisco, where she continues to record and perform tirelessly.
Russian born, London bred and now residing in Barcelona, DJ Vadim has built a formidable reputation as one of the world's hardest working DJs and producers. During his long and fruitful career he's worked with artists as varied as Stevie Wonder, The Roots, Prince, Kraftwerk and Paul Weller.
Constantly touring and creating, Vadim has been working with BBE since 2007's 'Soundcatcher'. Ten years later, 'Double Sided' will be his 7th album on the label.

In the whole of R&B history, the story of 70s jazzy-soul group Leo's Sunshipp is one of the more tragic tales. So named for the Leo starsign under which lead singers Kenny Stover, Johnny Simone, and Alvin Few, resided under, the trio's breezy, freewheeling take on soul music owed a debt of gratitude to Marvin Gaye, for whom Stover and Simone had been backing vocalists for at one point. The three eventually met to form Leo's Sunshipp and immediately got to work recording a full-length album, of which only four songs were seen to completion. Not long after, Simone fell ill and died of cancer in his early thirties. The four tracks were initially blocked from release by Stover, who later joined the group Finished Touch, but they eventually saw release through Lyons Records, who released them alongside instrumental and alternate mixes of the four tracks as We Need Each Other, in 1978. The album is an eight-song collection of infectious, emotionally unrestrained smooth soul, with summery vibes that bring to mind all the best parts of a Roy Ayers Ubiquity arrangement. These vibrant songs found new life in covers by Bobby Womack, Lulu, and Tavares, as well as sampling in tracks by Madlib, and Action Bronson.

Although not technically a Detroit-based garage group, this Cincinnati band fit in as honorary Detroiters by the time this single was released. The Greenhornes were purveyors of period-perfect 1960s rock n roll a la the Pretty Things and the Kinks. Plus, they were immediately set apart by their grim reputation of touring in a '67 Cadillac hearse. This single was recorded at Jack White's house in southwest Detroit right before the release of the Greenhornes' debut LP and the b-side is a re-imagined version of one of their 2nd LP's strongest tracks Shadow of Grief'. Band members Jack Lawrence and Patrick Keeler would go on to be the rhythm section in the Raconteurs while Brian Olive would later join the Soledad Brothers and make serious contributions to Dr. John's revered Locked Down' album.

The world lost a true soul icon on 23rd February 2017. After working with Leon Ware for the first release on Be With, we're honoured to celebrate his legacy further by presenting the vinyl reissue of one of his finest achievements: Rockin' You Eternally.


This customarily smooth set from 1981 is perhaps most famous for featuring three unforgettable tracks made with Marcos Valle. Rio's pop-soul wunderkind was exploring soul textures at the same time as Leon was absorbing the rich flavour of Brazilian harmonics. Together, they crafted rhythmically sophisticated and melodically adventurous soul.

The centrepiece of the album is the lush, creeping title track - a hypnotically arranged stepper's groove and an enduring classic. A perfect slice of orchestral soul, it features Leon's patented unusual chord progressions, Valle on Rhodes and restrained string arrangements from Gene Page.

The nimble funk groove of "Baby Don't Stop Me" is another collaborative delight and one of Leon's rare uptempo tunes. "Got To Be Loved" is a timeless ballad, a sublime quiet storm version of Valle's loping jazz-funk favourite "Bicho No Cio".

As with all Leon records, the lyrical themes are deeply eternal throughout, whilst the music is elegant, soulful and sensual. Beyond the Valle co-writes, the soaring instrumental "Don't Stay Away" is a real highlight, possessing an intricate melody and another heavenly string arrangement from the incredible Page. On the pleading sultry soul of "Sure Do Want You Now," Ware's uniquely expressive vocals are especially impassioned and polished.

This officially licensed reissue enables a wider audience to now discover its undoubted genius. The sumptuous artwork of the original jacket and inner sleeve have been faithfully restored, the latter featuring Leon's memorable lyrics. Simon Francis' sensitive mastering elevates the sound throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g.

"When we started to write, we found how easy it was, and at the same time how new it was, combining the feeling I had and the feeling he had", Valle explained to Wax Poetics on the subject of his fruitful partnership with Leon. The magic conjured up by fusing R&B with Brazilian rhythms and touches of jazz, funk, and pop resulted in a modern-soul/boogie essential.

The Bank Announce the Release of Their 2nd Album "Europa Center" a Testament to the Band's Raw Funk Roots

The Bank are becoming more and more known for their eclectic mix of funk and Afro disco with a raw live edge. The band's second album "Europa Center" has recently been released clearly influenced by the spirit of their live show and funk background. Dirty and raw, "Europa Center" has The Bank's fans old and new alike saying it may just be their best work yet.

Raw sounds of honest funk, African-influenced bass and drums that could make just about anyone have to get up and dance, and zombies. Yes, zombies. That's what The Bank have offered the world with their second studio album "Europa Center" and this interesting eclectic mix makes perfect sense for music lovers who love to have a good time. "The King Of Stones" sounds like if the Meters had Tony Allen on Drums while "Strings On Fire" could easily be the soundtrack to the Stuntman Mike Chase scene in Tarantino's Grind House. "San Francisco" is raw, dirty and groovy with the bonus of Jones's vocals that also appear on "Shake It Like A Zombie" . "1989" it's a funky number with a break down that screams to be sampled.

Europa Center captures that live spirit perfectly. All together 8 tracks were recorded as long jams at the Templeton Studio in Berlin and mastered by Mike Marsh, that name himself "the fourth Bank", at the acclaimed London Exchange . In addition to the regular lineup of The Bank, long time friend and tour mate Jeff Jones from the Jeff Jones Band also makes an appearance on vocals.

Mavis Staples is an American Music legend. She was at the forefront of the civil rights movement in the 1960's, as singer for the legendary gospel group, The Staples Singers. Mavis, along with her father, Pops, and siblings marched and worked alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on the fight for equality in this country. In December 2016, Mavis went to Washington, DC to receive the coveted Kennedy Center Honors from President Obama, with whom she has had a long standing friendship. Mavis invited Wilco frontman and dear friend, Jeff Tweedy as her guest for the weekend's festivities. The two spent hours discussing the current events and how today's fight for equality is very similar to those in the 60's. Inspired by these events, Mavis and Jeff got together and wrote Mavis' new album, If All I Was Was Black, produced by Jeff Tweedy

Another uber-rarity and another double sided funk killer

John Wesley Dickson is best known for his two contributions to the well-respected Praise Poems series. The stunning quality of "Barrows Blues" as well as "High & Dry" lead the Tramp crew to the decision to re-release his 45RPM single in a strictly limited press run of 300 copies. Those of you who have missed him so far are welcome to check out his Terry Callier style guitar work. Two sides of fantastic folky soul-jazz, certainly something which pleases the ears of any Rare Groove fan.

Ervin Rucker started out as a pianist and composer in the 1950s. After he released his sole single on Musette he changed his name to Big Daddy Rucker in the late 60s. At the same time he founded his own GME label on which he released 45s under his own name as well as this one by Little Mary Staten. "Steppin' Stone" is an excellent funky-soul track while the flip "Helpless Girl" is a sweet soul ballad. Both cuts can also be found on the Tramp Records album "The Soulful Side of GME & Musette Records", released on LP, CD and digital.

A rather fruity Brazilian, French spoken erotic version f Painel De Controle single we put out a couple of years ago that sits somewhere between euro disco and the original track. Always enjoyed playing this one out in the club as an answer record to the O.G so its good to have this one at 45rpm as well.

Lionel Richie (1982) is the U.S. quadruple-Platinum release that announced Richie was more than capable of connecting with millions of fans both new and old with his name appearing alone on the marquee. Alongside co-producer James Anthony Carmichael, whom he had previously worked with while in the Commodores, Richie crafted the template for his Eighties success via the emotional weight behind the chart-topping ballad Truly', the upbeat horn-driven accents on the chorus of You Are', and the overall vocal panache on My Love', which also featured background vocals from a favoured collaborator, Kenny Rogers. (Richie wrote Rogers's massive 1980 #1 crossover hit, Lady').
The album also certified quadruple-platinum in Canada and Platinum in the U.K.

Dancing On The Ceiling (1985) completed Richie's 1980s chart-success trifecta with Carmichael by his side in the co-producer's chair, achieving quadruple-platinum status while also supplying another slew of major hits. The title track's colourful, kinetic video contains an homage to Fred Astaire's iconic ceiling-dancing moves in 1951's Royal Wedding. Love Will Conquer All' marked Richie's tenth appearance at the top of the Adult Contemporary chart. And the #1 ballad Say You, Say Me', originally written for White Nights, a Cold War thriller starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines, won Richie a well-deserved Academy Award® for Best Original Song.

Dancing On The Ceiling is also certified triple-Platinum in Canada, double-Platinum in the U.K., and double-Gold in France.

In the year prior to her death from pancreatic cancer in 2016, Sharon Jones toured and performed tirelessly, and was also the subject of Miss Sharon Jones!, an acclaimed documentary by Oscar-Winning director BARBARA KOPPLE. Yet somehow, the beloved and heroic soul singer found time to complete a studio album. Soul of a Woman features eleven songs which reveal that the emotion, dynamics, and drama of Jones' voice remained at full power until her final days. The songs on Soul Of A Woman exemplify two distinct sides of the band's sound. Side One showcases grittier, bluesier material like "Matter Of Time" and "Sail On!," giving Sharon the room to flex her vocal prowess and creating a "liveness" that few studio albums posses. Side Two takes on a more sophisticated orchestral mood. Tracks like "When I Saw Your Face" and "These Tears (No Longer For You),' capture a soft vulnerability in Sharon's vocals that draws you deep inside, and yet they remain nuanced with the signature toughness that never allow you to forget she's steering the ship. The finished product is an album that captures a band and a singer at their peak.

It was 1970 when Curtis Mayfield left R&B group The Impressions, to set off on his own solo path. What followed was a rich and highly celebrated career, during which Mayfield produced some of the most influential R&B, soul, funk, and gospel recordings of all time. Along with Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder, Mayfield is credited with helping to ring in a new era of socially-aware funk and soul music, all while raking in numerous Billboard-charting hits both as a performer and a songwriter. Though he died in 1999, he left behind a vast legacy of innovation and long-lasting music, and has been ranked by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the 100 Greatest Artists of all-time. This impressive solo career began with his eponymous 1970 debut, Curtis. Calling upon his lengthy experiences as a songwriter from his time in The Impressions, Curtis Mayfield's solo work was a potently elegant work of 70s soul, which utilized the contemporary progressive Chicago sounds of the time to skillful effect. It was lushly arranged, but also politically-aware, a tapestry of orchestral sounds, but also hard-hitting and topical, and rendered chart hits in the tracks "(Don't Worry) If There's A Hell Down Below We're All Going To Go" and the soul music classic "Move On Up." Though often overlooked among Mayfield's other works, Curtis was an acclaimed commercial hit that set the stage for greater things to come in Mayfield's solo career.

The southern-style, Rhythm & Blues album Play The Blues by Buddy Guy & Junior Wells was recorded in the Miami Criteria Studios in the second half of 1970. Nevertheless, Guy was not able to leave Chicago out of this album with tracks such as "Bad Bad Whiskey" and "My Baby She Left Me".

This is probably the best recordings Guy & Wells ever made, sounding clean and smooth. An excellent blues album from two masters in blues!

This next chapter of Timmion's talent scouting in the US will land home with the Purple Heart of Soul, and turn even the coldest of us to the love side. No prisoners taken. It's time for Jonny Benavidez to lay his falsetto over the ever smooth backing of Cold Diamond & Mink. With the sweet as candy mid-pacer "Tell Me That You Love Me" he should go the whole mile.

Those, who have an insatiable thirst for crossover soul sounds by groups such as The Commands and TSU Toronadoes, should snatch up this piece of wax without haste. Texas made and California raised, Jonny has polished his teeth for years in doo wop groups and sung backing harmonies for big names such as Archie Bell and Eugene Pitt from The Jive Five. Currently residing in Austin, Texas he's forming and coating even more sweet tracks for Timmion.

It might not break the charts, but for some with the proper ear for beauty, this will undoubtedly be the new soul record of the year. Have a listen, if you are one of those privileged people.

Mamie's Records is the new project of troublemakers La Mamie's. The crew of Djs, well known for throwing wild parties in Paris and its suburbs, top-quality sets, and their dedication to the Macki Music Festival, have decided to launch their own record label. Kodäma is a music duo formed in 2014 by Kiala Ogawa (singer and composer originally from Japan and Congo) and by T-time (bassist and composer). The word «kodama», meaning «echo» in Japanese, also refers to spirits conveyed by trees and forests. According to the legends, these spirits are responsible for the the phenomenon in which the mountains echo. Kodäma's universe is very linked to Kiala's cultural sphere with, as a major source of inspiration, her childhood's memories from the Japanese countryside. Kodäma is a subtle combination of electronic and acoustic sounds with Kiala's captivating voice, blending English and Japanese. From this mixture of sounds emerges a spiritual, experimental music marked by their own neo soul groove or future jazz

Many great singers passed through the hands of late great soul/R&B producer Jerry Wexler, from Aretha Franklin to Dusty Springfield, but Etta James was a singer he willingly waited 20 long years to work with. "Etta is a church in herself," he said in his autobiography, adding: "Her voice is a mighty influence, her musical personality able to express an extraordinary range of moods." He further described her as "A woman used but not spent, abused but never defeated, vulnerable but though sheer strength of will, victorious." Her legend lives on in her music. We have always loved Pure Essence so delighted to be able to revisit the LP track and 45 as a 7" with Third Rock (Less rare but imho better track) on the A side from a brand new master done by myself. Untouchable Disco Funk of the highest order, LTD to 500 as are all the Now-Again vault release, no repress.

The R.D.M. Band, with singer Milton Campbell, were from Maple Shade, New Jersey and recorded two Virtue singles in 1969. They released their final 45 on the obscure Zoom Records label in the early 70s. "Give Up" and "How Can I Get in Touch with You" can also be found on the Tramp Records album "Virtue Recording Studios", released on 2LP, CD and digital.

Almost 20 years since they formed The Haggis Horns maintain their premier position at the top table of UK funk/soul bands. Their ever growing fan base, their ability to attract a new younger crowd while maintaining their original following, their release of quailty music on a regular basis and a busy diary of gigs both at home and abroad ensures they're as popular as anytime in their long life.Their storty is well documented elsewhere so no need to dwell on it too much here. Just look at the artists they've worked with and you can see the calibre of the band. These include Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Corinne Bailey Rae, Jamiroquai, Lily Allen, Lou Donaldson, John Legend, The Roots, Martha Reeves and Roots Manuva to name a few.In November 2017 The Haggis Horns Release their fourth studio album since their debut in 2007 and once again it's on their own Haggis Records. It's called "One Of These Days" and as expected, it features the usual heavy funk/jazz-funk dance floor bangers but also a nice mix of other genres, including their first recordings with a rapper, a proper disco/boogie gem and some sweet laid back 70's style soul. The usual Haggis Horns musical stew that showcases all their favourite influences from the soul, funk, hip hop and jazz traditions.

For deep soul lovers check out the title track "One Of These Days" featuring original Haggis Horns "Hot Damn!" vocalist John McCallum. Also try the second single from the album "World Gone Crazy" featuring their other long time singer Lucinda Slim for another slice of deep soul magic. Lucinda also features on lead vocals on the previously mentioned disco/boogie track "New York Beat", a perfect synthesis of jazz-funk guitar licks, analogue keyboard sounds, punchy brass and disco diva harmonised vocals.

There's a new rockier guitar sound on this LP reminiscent of Dennis Coffey's mid 70's b-boy funk instrumentals, especially on "Gonna Be Alright". Talking of b-boys, the band have collaborated with rapper/MC Doc Brown on the first single from the LP, released in summer 2017, the old skool funk/rap/hip-hop block party anthem "Take It Back". He also features on the other hip-hop/funk track "What's It All About". Shades of early Hip-Hop here from 1979/80 back when the first MC's rhymed over music played by live bands, like the dSugarhill Records house band on that label.

"One Of These Days" proves once again why The Haggis Horns are still top after two decades...they write their own songs, they don't follow the crowd, they stay ahead of the curve and they're always willing to take musical risks. And long may it continue

Ellas McDaniel (aka Bo Diddley) was a true American original. He originated a rock beat that has been used by everyone from The Who, to Bruce Springsteen, to The Smiths, had a teenaged Marvin Gaye working as his valet, toured with The Clash, and was in a series of popular Nike commercials. Not to mention the fact that, oh yeah, he wrote and recorded some of the most important rock and roll music of the mid 20th-century. And that guitar, that iconic guitar, which is prominently featured on the cover of this classic 1962 LP. This is the first LP to feature his popular female rhythm guitarist sidekick, The Duchess, and while not featuring the chart-toppers of other release is a stunner of classic R&B influenced rock and roll that's essential for any Diddley fan.
