3 Feet High and Rising is the debut studio album by hip hop trio De La Soul and was released on March 3, 1989

It marked the first of three full- length collaborations with producer Prince Paul, which would become the critical and commercial peak of both parties. Critically, as well as commercially, the album was a success. It contains the singles, "Me Myself and I", "The Magic Number", "Buddy", and "Eye Know".

The album title came from the Johnny Cash song "Five Feet High and Rising". It is listed on Rolling Stone's 200 Essential Rock Records and The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. Released amid the 1989 boom in gangsta rap, which gravitated towards hardcore, confrontational, violent lyrics, De La Soul's uniquely positive style made them an oddity beginning with the first single, "Me, Myself and I". Their positivity meant many observers labeled them a 'hippie' group, based on their declaration of the 'D.A.I.S.Y. Age' (Da. Inner. Soul. Yall).

Sampling artists as diverse as Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and The Turtles, 3 Feet High and Rising is often viewed as the stylistic beginning of 1990s alternative hip hop (and especially jazz rap).

Thomas und Smudo übernehmen noch eine verwaiste Four-Music-Mitarbeiter-Wohnung, von einem Mann namens „Wernicke“ in der Immenhofer Straße und bestellen für einen beschaulichen Reim-Schreibe-Abend beim Pizzaservice. Der vermutlich erst kürzlich aus Italien eingereiste Pizzafahrer notierte sich die Worte „Emnhof / Fornika“ und die Mahlzeit kam tatsächlich pünktlich an. Zauberei. Der Titel für das 2007 auf Columbia Records/ Sony BMG veröffentlichte Album war geboren.

Für den Titelsong nahm der leider viel zu früh verstorbene Sex- und Drogen-Papst Günter Amendt eine 1a-Übersetzung des Thriller-Gedichts auf. Die Stuttgarter Manumatei sangen den Refrain. So bunt und verspielt ist das ganze Album. Unauffällig erscheinen Herbert Grönemeyer („Einfach Sein“), die Münchener Freiheit („Ernten Was Wir Säen“) oder Max Herre („Was Bleibt“). Das Album mit dem schönsten Gag in zwei Zeilen „Ding Dong, geh du mal ran ich kann grad‘ nicht – King Kong, kann nicht sein den kenn‘ ich nicht“ („Yeah Yeah Yeah“), der schönsten Selbsterkenntnis „Die Jungs haben sich kaum verändert, außer den Augenrändern“ („Du Uns Sie Und Wir“) und dem schönsten Dauerreim „Wir wollen eine Formel für ewigen Reichtum? Kriegen Wir leider nicht! Harrison Ford oder Xavier Naidoo? Sind Wir leider nicht!“ („Einfach Sein“).

Weil „Fornika“ ein eigener Kosmos ist, glänzt das Album mit einem vielseitigem Booklet, in dem jeder einzelne Song wie ein Classic-Kinofilm-Plakat gestaltet ist. Für Vinylkisten ein echtes Schmuckstück.

Und wer weiß, was „to fornicate” im Englischen bedeutet, der versteht, dass Die Fantastischen Vier mit diesem Klassiker, der „Fornika“, es allen gezeigt haben. Das Album erreichte Platz 1 der deutschen Charts.

Wenn eines fernen Tages bei Grabungen im größten Baumschulgebiet Europas eine rostige goldene Schallplatte ausgebuddelt wird, stammt die womöglich aus einer elterlichen Glasvitrine der drei Flitzpiepen von Gruppe Fettes Brot. Als gesichtsbekannte Kinder der nord-westlichen Hamburger Suburbs nahmen die drei Mikrophon-Jongleure ihre fixen Erfolge seit dem hinteren Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts mit demselben Zwiespalt aus Scham und Erregung hin, der schon ihre disparaten Vorgänger ausgezeichnet hatte: Gleichermaßen mit Rap (De La Soul, Run DMC) und Punk (die Ärzte, Rio Reiser) gewässert, wuchsen ihre Bäumchen manchmal so hoch in das Land der MTViva-Riesen, dass ihnen nur noch schwindelig wurde beim Runtergucken auf die heile kleine Vorstadtwelt, wo tief im Underground ihre Wurzeln steckten.

Rap duo Havoc and Prodigy aka Mobb Deep from Queensbridge, Queens, New York returned in 2001 with their fifth album. Resurfacing, after recording Murda Muzik (MOVLP1663), this time they approached the rap-scene differently, moving away from the minimalistic stripped-down heavy violence hip/hop.

During the time of release Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) had been the center of Jay-Z's attack on his track The Takeover' and Mobb Deep cut the track Crawlin' where Prodigy strikes back on Jay-Z calling him H to the know'. Tracks like The Learning (Burn)' featuring Noyd, Kill That Nigga' and productions from Scott Storch (Dr. Dre/Nas/50 Cent) for Live Foul' still display the dark beats and straight-up street rhymes Mobb Deep is known for.

Legendary 7X GRAMMY and Emmy Award-winning artist/producer Dr. Dre celebrates the 30th anniversary of his magnum opus, The Chronic by announcing the album will be re-released. The Chronic, which is not currently available on streaming services, will again be available to fans on all major DSPs .

Last year, Dr. Dre dazzled during the Super Bowl LVI Halftime Show in Los Angeles. Dre commanded the stage – just a few miles from his birthplace of Compton – with a groundbreaking setlist anchored by hits such as "The Next Episode" and the 2Pac-led "California Love." Easily one of the greatest roots reggae albums of all time, Soul Rebels resulted from the intensive partnership brokered by the group and maverick producer, Lee 'Scratch' Perry. It was the first Wailers 'concept' album, conceived as a long-player based on a rebellious theme, rather than a collection of isolated singles, and the presence of the Barrett brothers in the rhythm section pointed the way for greater glories to come. The Wailers first formed as an unruly five-piece in 1963, with Junior Braithwaite as lead singer and Beverley Kelso an early member, sometimes replaced by Cherry Green. During their long tenure at Studio One, Bob Marley gradually shifted to the lead vocal role and the robust core of Marley, Peter Tosh, and Neville Livingston, aka Bunny Wailer, soon emerged as the mainstays of the group. Perry was involved with the Wailers at Studio One, using their talents for backing vocals on some of his solo work, but the partnership that yielded Soul Rebels was in an entirely different league. The title track, Tosh's anguished "400 Years and "Corner Stone" are legendary for their intense power; "It's Alright" set the template for the later "Night Shift," "My Cup" was an individual barebones reading of James Brown's "I Guess I'll Have To Cry Cry Cry," while the playful "Try Me" and "No Water" are suggestive odes. Tosh's dejected "No Sympathy" and the spirited "Soul Almighty" are other winners and the "Cloud 9" revamp "Rebel's Hop" is another joy. All killer, no filler!

8 Mile – Music From And Inspired By The Motion Picture (Expanded Edition) the soundtrack to Eminem’s semi-autobiographical legendary film of the same name was released 20 years ago (on 10/28) and spawned one of the biggest hits of his career, Lose Yourself, which has been certified 13x Diamond. 8 Mile is also famous for launching 50 Cent’s musical career with his first hit “Wanksta.” This new expanded edition features all of the songs from the album in an instrumental format alongside the demo version of “Lose Yourself.”

Originally released in 1984, ‘Jika Jika’ is an audaciously sassy version of Grandmaster Flash's 'The Message'. A Linn drum machine and Jupiter 4 synth recreate the feel of the hip hop masterpiece, whilst Sipho’s infectious bassline and a soulful female chorus, bring a whole
new dimension of South African groove to the cut. A mysterious rap vocal makes this arguably South Africa’s first ever hip-hop record.

The flip sees a jazzy synth taking the lead over a gritty version of the instrumental for an even sleazier experience.

The 1990s were a time when hip-hop infused with R&B became pop music, and at the forefront of this movement was En Vogue. Their most commercially and critically successful album, Funky Divas, stands as one of the best pop/R&B albums to emerge from that time, incorporating soul, hip-hop, pop, dance, and rock to create one of the era’s most diverse, dazzling, and exciting pieces of work. The album scored no less than five hit singles, three of which became Top 10 pop hits. It includes the unstoppable “My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)”, which was one of the biggest hits of 1992 and additionally the remake of “Giving Him Something He Can Feel,” “Give It Up Turn It Loose,” and “Free Your Mind”.

Given Massive Attack's background, it was almost inevitable that they'd release a dub overhaul of one of their albums at one point. That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. 21 years on, the set still sounds sublime: a radical translation that frequently bares only a passing resemblance to the Bristol band's original. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".

Repressed again. On the West Coast, gangsta rap held sway in hip-hop as the 21st century began. The alternative and conscious rap music of the early-to-mid-90s had all but faded into the underground. The scene was set for a comeback, perhaps as a backlash to the perceived violence and misogyny of gangsta rap's content. Leading the resurgence of alternative hip-hop were groups like Jurassic 5, and recent signees to Capitol Records; a West coast trio that had been building steam underground since the early 90s called Dilated Peoples. Anticipation was high for the release of the debut album from Evidence, Rakaa, and DJ Babu. (Of the influential turntablist collective Beat Junkies.) When The Platform arrived in May of 2000 it was met with critical and underground acclaim, as well as affording Dilated Peoples their first Billboard chartings. It featured a back-to-basics sound with a heavy debt to the old-school hip-hop ethos, the kind of sound that harkened back to the early days of legends like De La Soul & A Tribe Called Quest. Hits like "No Retreat" and "The Platform" were bolstered by Evidence & Rakaa's subtle, abstract wit, and swift, adroit wordplay, while DJ Babu provided production chops and dextrous scratches. On The Platform the trio were joined by the likes of B-Real, Tha Alkoholiks, Everlast, Planet Asia, and many more providing guest vocals, while boasting guest production from The Alchemist & Kut Masta Kurt, among others. Since its 2000 release this influential record, which heralded the return of alternative hip-hop, has never seen a vinyl reissue. With that, Get On Down-always on top of giving the greatest hip-hop albums their due-is proud to present this re-release of The Platform. The rhymes are still fresh, the production is still pristine, and the album is now back on vinyl for the first time in 17 years.

Raised in Queens, New York, rapper, actor, and media personality Noreaga (N.O.R.E) has spent the better part of the last 3 decades topping charts, pushing buttons and capturing the world's attention. While he may be known these days as the host of one of the most popular podcasts in the world, "Drink Champs, " it was his earlier work as an unapologetic, energetic MC that helped to catapult the multi-talented artist into the spotlight. First making waves with his work as one half of duo Capone-N-Noreaga alongside fellow Queens rapper Capone, N.O.R.E.'s career has been unrelenting since first hitting the charts in 1997. Shortly after the release of their massively successful debut album, "The War Report", Capone landed himself back in prison and N.O.R.E. moved ahead as a solo act, finding further success with his first, self-titled album, "N.O.R.E.". Released in 1998, the album catapulted up the charts, peaking at #3 on the Billboard 200 and went on to be certified platinum by the Riaa.
