Soul Jazz Records' new 'Boombox' features some of the many innovative underground first-wave of rap records made in New York in the period 1979-82, all released on small, independent, often family-concern record companies, at a time when hip-hop music still remained under the radar.
This first exuberant wave of innocent, upbeat, 'party on the block' rap records were the first to try and create the sounds heard in community centres, block parties and street jams that initially took place in the Bronx in the mid-1970s. But where Flash, Kool Herc and Bambaataa were back-spinning, mixing and scratching together now classic breakbeat records like The Incredible Bongo Band's 'Apache' or Babe Ruth's 'The Mexican', these first rap records were all made using live bands, often replaying then current disco tunes, whilst MCs rapped over the top, creating a unique sound that later became known derisively as 'old school'.
And while hip-hop started in the Bronx, rap on vinyl began in Harlem where long-time established rhythm and blues producer-owned record companies such as Joe Robinson's Enjoy Records, Paul Winley's Winley Records, Delmar Donnel's Delmar International and Jack 'Fatman' Taylor's Rojac and Tayster were the first off the mark to realise the commercial potential of rap music - releasing early ground-breaking records that all quickly followed in the wake of the first rap record, The Sugarhill Gang's 'Rappers Delight', a million-selling worldwide hit.
This collection celebrates these first old-school rap records, bringing together rare, classic and obscure tracks released in the early days of rap.
Deluxe double CD-pack comes with slipcase, 40-page outsize perfect-bound booklet, extensive notes, exclusive photography and original label artwork. Triple heavyweight vinyl includes full artwork, text and notes as well as free download code.

The Mixtapers - We So Good

It shouldn't really matter where The Mixtapers hail from. But on the other hand, their music in the midst of Future Funk (à la The Internet, Dam-Funk oder James Pants) and classic hiphop reminds of the sound from LA and Toronto which is conquering the world right now. Martino Bisson and Michele Manzo come from Bologna, Italy though. And that's exactly where they assembled a forceful squad to record 100% organically (no samples, no loops or any other Ableton gimmicks) with vintage synths (with Fender Rhodes leading the way), old drum machines and proper instruments a harmonious mini album.

Having yet attracted minor attention only with two cassette tapes (via Expansions Collective) within the blogosphere, now thanks to the signing by Sonar Kollektiv The Mixtapers will be introduced to a wider audience. We So Good', the title track of this collection, masterfully treads a tightrope between Golden Era Hiphop and the current funky friskiness of, let's say Kendrick Lamar or Chance The Rapper. No wonder, since we have the pleasure of a guest performance by the reincarnation of the legendary Yancey Boys here: Illa J and Frank Nitt celebrate the good ol' days. For Peaces' the Italians managed to get one of the hottest and one to watch' MCs in their studio: DistantStarr from Detroit. The combination of his delivery with the voice of singer ALO and an extra bold production results in actually the perfect springtime hit of this still juvenile year. Fresh for 2016', can be said as well about Don't You Let It Go', with Nico Menci at the keys and Danilo Mineo on percussions (both are present on all of the four tracks by the way).

Paul Nice And Phill Most Chill - Fabreeze Brothers

The hugely successful first colour vinyl edition sold out in only 2 weeks from release date so due to demand we are already repressing this instant classic! We appreciate that the expensive luxuriously packaged first edition was not for everyone's budget so the second edition is standard black vinyl and a regular sleeve design. These changes have brought the cost back in line with a standard double LP without cheapening the product and is still a superior quality package compared to many other independent releases.

The artwork has been tweaked to work with the standard sleeve format which is presented on heavyweight 380gsm card and is factory sealed in shrink wrap instead of plastic sleeves. We kept the original hype sticker design to retain the overall aesthetic from the first edition along with the same full colour insert but have included an extra information sticker for the back cover with track listing. We have also kept to double vinyl for pressing quality and have even reworked the label design as we found that the first edition labels didn't suit black vinyl quite the same as the colour vinyl edition so even though this is aimed at being cheaper than the first pressing we're still paying close attention to detail.

So as to be able to reach a wider audience we have added a Compact Disc release to the formats available which is presented in a factory sealed card sleeve with full colour inner sleeve so that the design remains in line with the vinyl issue.

People Are You Ready (feat. The Good People) - Boca 45

One of the most popular tracks from the recent critically acclaimed "Dig Eat Beats Repeat" album from Bristol's Boca 45 gets a timely 7" pressing. Featuring NYC's The Good People (aka Emskee & The Saint), Boca's old school boom bap provides the perfect backdrop for their energetic tag teaming - combining to create a perfect block party anthem.

On the flip, hip hop renaissance men Soundsci flip the beat to a reggae tinged neck-snapper that should find a place in record boxes across the board!

Ghostface Killah - 12 Reasons To Die

Adrian Younge's acclaimed collaboration with Wu-Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah, re-issued for the first time on Linear Labs! The sounds of classic 36 Chambers-era RZA meld with Portishead and the Italian film music of Ennio Morricone on 12 Reasons To Die, the first ever collaboration between Ghostface Killah and Adrian Younge. A daring, full-length Crime/Horror concept album, 12 Reasons' executive producer and Ghostface's longtime Wu-Tang Clan collaborator The RZA, referred to the album as 'groundbreaking' in the hip-hop genre. Ghostface Killah's prominence in hip hop has grown steadily over his 20-plus year career - including high-profile appearances on Kanye West's Cruel Summer, RZA's The Man With the Iron Fists soundtrack and 36 Seasons, his recent collaboration with The Revelations - 12 Reasons catches the gifted MC at the height of his lyrical prowess. Composer/producer/instrumentalist Adrian Younge represents the next generation of black music producers. His aim is an organic re-appropriation of hip-hop circa the mid-90s. His previous releases, the Black Dynamite soundtrack album (2009) Something About April (2011), and There Is Only Now, his collaboration with Souls Of Mischief (2012), touched on psychedelia, blaxploitation, and the cinematic soul of the 1970s. 12 Reasons was Adrian's first project in which he's immersed himself in the world of hip-hop

Ike & Tina Turner - Don't Play Me Cheap

There has never been a team quite like Sue Records' Ike and Tina Turner, and now, making the vocal solo scene, Tina proves herself a performer and show-woman nonpareil. Aided by the fine hand of hubby Ike, who stays to cleff some of the numbers and play the guitar and piano in fine style, Tina applies her pulsating rhythm sense to uptempo tunes with devastating effect. Then she turns around (and around) and croons a love ballad with an earthy, emotional feel that leaves the listener humble with admiration. So listen to Tina's driving renditions of Wake Up,' Mama Tell Him' and I Made A Promise Up Above', plus her rockaballad versions of Don't Play Me Cheap,' Pretend,' Look Through Me,' Forever Mine' and My Everything To Me.' These songs were inspired choices to bring out Tina's rare ability to be equally at home with a shouting, screaming pulser, or a tender ballad that gives her a chance to show off her more gentle, kittenish side. As a nightclub attraction Ike and Tina have wowed'em from coast to coast, and as recording stars they have no peers. And Tina's dynamic performance in this her latest Sue album firmly places the attractive, shapely star in the annals of all-time great disk stars.'

Delegation - Heartache No. 9 / You & I

Following the Record Store Day release of Donna McGhee's Make It Last Forever, Groove Line Records launches a series of 12' audiophile reissues from the Disco underground starting with the irresistible Heartache No. 9 by DELEGATION. DELEGATION'S 1980 single, Heartache No. 9, the opening track from the groups Ken Gold (The Real Thing) produced album Eau De Vie, is represented on this release in its much sought after 12' Disco Remix version.

Opening with an irresistible, tight, fluid, bottom-end groove provided that sees the crisp drums and propulsive bass, allied to the interplay between the funky horn runs and Chic-esque guitars, Heartache No. 9 has your feet firmly on the dance floor before the stunning orchestration and Ricky Bailey's passionate interpretation of the clever, innovative lyrics bind all the elements together to make this a bona-fide club classic.

The flip side is the equally infectious You And I, also a hit single from Eau De Vie, which exhibits all the traits of Heartache No. 9 with an emphasis on the strong vocal harmonies taking centre stage in front of the more minimal orchestration.

All Groove Line Records releases are fully licensed and taken from the original master tapes, remastered by Nick Robbins at Sound Mastering, and cut by Matt Colton at Alchemy (Mastering Engineer of the Year 2013). Balearica - Volume 8

Volume 8

Balearica
30.04.2012

Fantastic new 12' compilation featuring four more wonderful sunkissed obscurities unearthed from the vaults of the Balearica camp, including three must-have floor filling cover versions. First up is 'Don't Stop The Music' by Bits & Pieces, a superb Sly & Robbie produced disco reggae take on the Yarbrough & Peoples classic that found favour at the Paradise Garage as well as on the dancefloors of Ibiza. Next up is the equally brilliant and in-demand Staple Singers' interpretation of The Talking Heads' 'Slippery People', a sure fire party starter. The flipside sees Eric's Friends turn in a great Italo disco rework of Clapton's rock classic 'Cocaine', a hard to find gem from 1983 which is a big favourite of DJ Harvey and Daniel Wang. Rounding off the EP is Brian Briggs' Loft / Balearic classic 'AEO', a sublime masterpiece combining African-style chants, beautiful synth riffs and artificial bird calls to create a stunning dreamy soundscape that deserves all its accolades. Quality!

The first installment of the One-derful! Collection focuses on the namesake imprint of this legendary Chicago label group - to be followed by compilations of the Mar-V-Lus, M-Pac!, Halo, Midas, and Toddlin' Town sub-labels. It marks the first in-depth study of what was once one of Chicago's most prominent African-American run labels.

One-derful! Records is available in 2xLP and CD formats, and within the grooves of these 25 tracks lie orchestrated soul classics from McKinley Mitchell and Betty Everett, raucous mid-1960s R&B dancers from the Five Du-Tones which shake every bone, superb deep soul ballads from Otis Clay, and extraordinary group harmony sides from The Sharpees and The Admirations, plus 12 tracks that have never been issued!

Between 1962 and 1971, the One-derful! family of labels released 180+ 45s of stunning soul, funk, and gospel. Over two years of painstaking research and work, including countless hours spent cataloging, transferring, and mastering 250 of the label's tapes, has contributed to an amazingly extensive reissue collection.

In addition, some of the world's leading experts have contributed liner notes and interviewed virtually every known surviving artist, producer, and otherwise involved party.

Central to One-derful! is the Leaner family. By 1962 when brothers George and Ernie Leaner started One-derful! Records, they were revered figures on Chicago's Record Row and beyond. They distributed material from labels like Motown and Stax and One-derful! attracted top talent. It wasn't uncommon for a WVON DJ to help One-derful! sign their newest discovery, or for their singers, musicians, songwriters, or producers to have Chess or Motown on their resumes.

Nearly 20 years prior, George and Ernie started work at their sister's Groove Record Shop. Before long, George was an assistant to legendary blues producer Lester Melrose, and later the brothers helped run Parkway Records - recording historic 78s featuring Little Walter and Muddy Waters. They did all of this before launching United Record Distributors in 1950 - regarded as the nation's first black owned record distributor. In addition, their uncle Al Benson was the most influential Radio DJ on Chicago's South Side. His on-air support and occasional partnerships with the Chess brothers proved crucial to their early success. He also helped many DJs get their start, including Vivian Carter who later

formed Vee-Jay Records. In fact, United Record Distributors hosted her wedding. The Leaner name also turns up in connection with many of the greats in blues and soul: George Leaner produced an early release for Berry Gordy's Tamla label, and in the 1970s Ernie Leaner and Stax's Al Bell partnered to form Ernie's Onestop and a chain of Record World stores. The Leaner family were among the most important black businessmen of music's golden era, yet much of their history has only been superficially documented until now.
