Schlachthofbronx - Dun Dem / Soundbad

We at ZamZam have long been fans of Schlachthofbronx's genre-smashing club tracks that harness and hybridize bass music styles from Germany, UK, Jamaica, Mexico, Brazil, and beyond. But when we heard the dark dub of last year's 'Blurred Vision' we knew we had to reach out. Little did we know the duo was already into ZamZam, paving the way to an eagerly anticipated release championed on dubplate by selectors from The Bug to O.B.F. to Toddla T.

The Munich pair's ZamZam pushes a sound that's intutive and familiar, yet unlike anything else out there. Schlachthofbronx have carved out an absolutely unique and steely-eyed take on punishing dubwise informed not only by post-punk, house, electro, industrial, and traditional dub reggae principles, but by the legendary 60,000 watt Elemental Wave rig they host their Blurred Vision night on. Imagine an alternative musical universe where PIL, Mad Professor, and Basic Channel hole up in the Batcave for a pitch-black sound system rave and you're getting the picture.

'Dun Dem''s ring-modulating lead works its way into unsuspecting ears while the projectile kick drum calls in an extended intro that builds into one of the most satisfying drops we've ever heard in a steppers tune. A blackened bassline of pure dub fire drives galloping clave and 4/4 sleigh bells deeper and deeper into a flooded cavern of reverb and dark delights.

'Soundbad' is more maximal minimalism, wringing super-saturated color from deceptively simple elements, marrying a massive dub bassline to smeared white noise snares and rockers hi hats, twisting and rebounding lasers and warped FX into claustrophobic reverb traps.

Both tunes were tested, worked, & reworked through Schlachthofbronx' non-stop global touring schedule. Results in the dance speak for themselves - we think you'll have trouble knowing which side to reach for first. Do you want a sound system missile, or a sound system bomb

Escapism Refuge - Misfit / Compa Remix

It's been a busy year so far for Escapism Refuge. His debut album 'Hold' was released on Vinyl that contained some stand out tracks from the LP, along with some remixes from Synkro and Congi.

There has been continuing support with his music from an array of taste makers around the globe and his DJ career is moving from strength to strength. A big highlight for this rising talent was his DJ set at Red Bull's Music Festival in Johannesburg, earlier this year on one of the main stages. His set was met by many moving feet and thousands of fans that adore his music.

Escapism Refuge now returns to Smokin' Sessions with one of the stand out track taken from the album 'Hold' entitled 'Misfit' (sure you know that one by now), along with a fresh new track entitled 'Stuck' and.....................drum roll please! Compa on the remix duties!!!

The Compa remix is an absolute stonker and is a joy to hear 'Misfit' finally on Vinyl, that show off this beauty of a track on pure wax physicality. Strictly limited edition on these, grab one while they're about ,)

Championed by the likes of LiveMag SA, XLR8R, Kaltblut Magazine, Dummy Mag and Between 10 and 5, it is no surprise that the aspiring musician has seen commendation from Giles Peterson (BBC Radio), Joe Kay (Soulection), Lefto (Brownwood Recordings) and Kid Founque in his home town in South Africa.

Ghost Writerz - They Wanna Know / Dancehall Dub

Repress

London's Ghost Writerz are back with a banger! Following a slew of releases on Tru Thoughts and a recent mixtape "Welcome To Ghost Town" heating up the streets, Jimmy Screech and Sleepy Time Ghost return with a big splash on NICE UP! Records. Based around a familiar reggae riddim, the track tells the tale of Jimmy's foundation in soundsystem culture, starting in the 80s and name-checking legends such as Shabba Ranks, Yellowman, Smiley Culture along the way. As the riddim flips we shift forward a generation, 90s dancehall and rap dominate, giving props to hip hop royalty such as Busta Rhymes and 2Pac, then finally firing off a huge jungle climax, dripping in enough amen breaks to set the dancefloor alight whilst giving a little history of the musical heritage behind Ghost Writerz.

Sharpie EP

Crucial Recordings
25.07.2018

This past year has seen the steady rise of Opus; a budding producer who has undoubtedly begun making waves within the dubstep scene for continuously crafting versatile, dynamic heat amidst his ever-evolving, idiosyncratic soundscape. Opus stands as no stranger to engineering a slew of notable beats, thanks to his seemingly intrinsic musical prowess coupled with a knack for reaching far beyond the constructs of conventions and expectations. This sort of ravenous creative mentality has earned Opus a debut release on White Peach Records as well as a subsequent release with Encrypted Audio, not to mention play support from the likes of scene heavy hitters such as Noisia, Bukez Finezt, Goth-Trad, Sleeper, Commodo, DIstance and Jack Sparrow.

Taking large strides forward, Opus's music is poised to find an apt home with Sleeper's boundary shattering Crucial Recordings imprint with the release of his Sharpie EP (CRUCIAL018). Echoing the philosophies of Crucial Recordings' standard-setting and ever-expanding output, Opus's Sharpie EP stands as a perfect addition to the imprint's multifaceted and boundary shattering catalogue. The release unlatches with its title track, 'Sharpie,' laden with an undeniably energetic melody coupled with puncturing percussion and indistinguishable yet highly effective vocal sampling. Sharpie's equally robust B-side boasts the powerfully dark, dizzying and volatile 'Peel,' packed with a surprising dubby twist, culminated by 'Newspeak;' a vigorously twisted, string-driven conclusion to a truly distinct and exceptional collection.

Andrea Taeggi - Zimní Král

SM-LL
04.09.2018

6 track LP pressed on 12" black vinyl with black centre label, black disco insert, black laminated sleeve with barcode detail.

* London based label SM-LL presents its second main label 12" LP release, Zimní Král, from Italian artist Andrea Taeggi.

* Andrea Taeggi works in Berlin as a composer, live performer and electronic music producer. Besides his solo practice
— on his own name or under the moniker Gondwana, he is co-leading long-standing electroacoustic project Lumisokea. His music has been released on vinyl and dubplate on labels Opal Tapes, Type, and Präsens Editionen.

* The music on this record was made using a vast array of rare analog machines Taeggi had the chance to work on at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio in Holland (built with the iconic Studio di Fonologia RAI as a blueprint). Most of the percussive sounds come from an Analog Computer, which has been rarely used only as a music instrument (its main purpose was flight simulation). In fact, during the Cold War times it was also used as a measurement tool by civil engineers and even by the army. At present, no one has ever officially released music recorded at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio.

*The music on this record further explores cyclical, minimal and hypnotic concoctions - a particular investigation focused on unusual rhythms that Taeggi had already started on his well-received 'Mama Matrix Most Mysterious', released on Type in 2015. Think walls of sub frequencies, snappy rollercoasters of the mind, labyrinths in hyperspace & snakes eating their own tails.

Grim Lusk - SUNLP0101

Grim Lusk

SUNLP0101

12inchDEX004
Domestic Exile
31.07.2018

Next up we'll be switching the format and presenting to you our first ever vinyl release. We're absolutely thrilled that Grim Lusk will be bestowed with that honour, and we couldn't be any more proud. For those who are already familiar with Grim Lusk's varied recording projects, established elements are further developed as sublimely demonstrated on the sample and loop based 'Search', a dub / lo-fi hip-hop excursion that shuffles and shimmers before becoming more narcotically lysergic. Free from constraints, we transcend into 'It's My Nature', as all of that serotonin depletion is suddenly transformed into nutritional sustenance. A gleaming, hallucinogenic, hypnotic collage of exotic rhythmic disco percussion patterns which blossom and take flight to the sky above like the wildlife on the front sleeve with uninhabited adventure and freedom; a luscious, evocative, beguiling anomaly. 'Sea Club-Rush' develops the experimental shape shifting, with a dense, sludgy quagmire of oddball techno discombobulations, before the record submerges into the deepest of voids, a k-hole induced sense of purposeful confusion and disorientation.
Depressurized as if drifting in the mysterious vacuum of space whilst subtle layers of distorted bass prod at you to keep you afloat, 'It's Happening' utilises a descending Risset glissando to leave you barely clinging on to reality, almost as if you are experiencing an astral projection but trapped within a detached nightmare that you can't escape. 'Yes He Did' has an infectious and killer bouncing boogie bass guitar spread over a lopsided beat which never quite settles; weaving in and out further bewitching your mind. The record culminates in the downtempo 'Laces', pulling you into the all-consuming squelch and pressure of the suction below; a claustrophobic suffocation that intensely builds up suspense, squeezing and melting as it develops. Reminiscent of Sherwood's exceptional technique of incisively slicing, cutting and pasting manipulated dub / industrial percussion, 'Laces' works equally well at 45rpm. In its fullness, the sounds presented on 'SUNP0101' are an intoxicating slip down a neon-lined chute into eternal dance floor darkness. Immaculate sleeve artwork by Australian-born, London-based designer Brodie Kaman.

The EP is much more than just a handful of tracks, it's an introspective body of work.

Slowglide - Reigi / Haipa

Slowglide

Reigi / Haipa

12inchATN041
Antinote
12.04.2018

The 12' you're about to read a few lines about is a laconic introduction to the music of an elusive new musician on Antinote. Biographical details about him would probably not help comprehend his music and might even seem slightly contradictory with the music itself, as Reigi / Haipa has been produced in Reims - at least, it would have been much more accommodating if the capital of Champagne was located somewhere in-between Sheffield and London...
.
Indeed, at first listen, Slowglide's music seems deeply rooted in a very British history of dance music. Reigi, on the A-side, unfolds a cavernous syncopated kick on which relies a compressed, flangered, smart but somehow handcrafted sound with an extra Kraftwerkian treatment (the obsessive robotic arigato gozaimasu' and the pocket calculator' bleeping melodic line), enlightened by discreet synth waves appearing in the middle of the track.

Haipa, the atmospheric B-side, is an even stronger throwback to a time when Intelligent Dance Music was ruling over electronic music, the likes of Aphex Twin and his fellow Warp-affiliates were about to be crowned kings and Ghost In The Shell was establishing itself as one of the most culturally significant pictures of the late past century.

Slowglide's music is not backward-looking, though. There's something that relevantly resonates with today's diffracted musical landscape, as the French producer gathers and updates bits and pieces from a thirty-andsomething yearlong history of electronic dance music. The result is probably Bass Music', something that one might have been tempted to describe as the future of Dance Music' a few decades ago - to quote these prophetic words written many times. It's probably not, but these two songs are certainly fresh and futuristic.

Uniform - The Long Walk

Following the release of critically acclaimed LP Wake in Fright, which had two songs featured in the new season of David Lynch's Twin Peaks, it was time for Uniform vocalist Michael Berdan and instrumentalist Ben Greenberg to return to the studio. The duo decided to up the ante and add a third member to help perfect their vicious post-industrial dystopian cyber-punk. After some deliberation, Greenberg called upon drummer Greg Fox (Liturgy, Zs) to help round out the sound they were looking for. Using a mix of triggered samples and real drums along with layered synths and good old electric guitar, the trio arrived at what would become The Long Walk after only a few short days in the studio.

From the opening whirr of the title track, it's clear that the band is onto something special. Recorded in Strange Weather studios in the first part of 2018, The Long Walk is eight new tracks by the duo of Greenberg and Berdan, incorporating Fox's skills behind the drum kit to add an entirely new dimension to the signature Uniform sound. Ditching sequenced tracks, Greenberg opted for single takes to highlight the Frankenstein-like guitar-bass-synth hybrid that oozes throughout the recording. Meanwhile, crushing guitar thunder is punched up by Fox's masterful drumming while Berdan's cries from the nether feel more desperate and morose than ever.

The thrid an final installment of archive material, selected by Antinote. A killer suite if you ask us. TIP!
.
You can trail away with it. It is easy to enter, but hard to drop out. Tolouse Low Trax just needs an MPC, a small Synthesizer set up and some effects to create subliminal hypnotic music trips, driven by dark synthlines and drunken shuffled patterns. The primitiveness in my music is linked to something simple, and that don't have to be obligatory minimal. For me it is enough to dance rough around the core. Music you don't shape till the end contains of a moment of beauty. A veil of secrecy. I work very simply. I rather reduce my possibilities in ompass. Limitations offer lots of liberties.' He reveals about his work ethic. Even if his music sounds darker then any ever experienced night, he mostly produces it in the morning in his highly inspirational studio home. During the dark times of the day Tolouse Low Trax mostly performs live around the globe. Or hangs out in his second home: the Salon Des Amateurs club bar in Dusseldorf, which he once founded and where he held until today two weekly DJ residencies. The moments and atmospheres he inhales during these lightless moments are mirrored in his shadowy music, about which he also confesses: My art is more a cinematic, literally idea of a large to explore Megacity. This is one of the pictures I would link to my music.' On ' part one he now offers five sounding visions about that Megacity'. They listen to mysterious names like Hidden Flat' or Studies in Drama'. They are nervous. They have ephemeral pieces of dub, Industrial, wave or Italian library music. And at times strangealienated voice samples dance within his highly addictive arrangements. Words can't express their magic. But one thing is fore sure: his hypnotic dance-not-dance tracks do not only illuminate so-called freaks!

Hyperdub
17.07.2018

Producer Okzharp and vocalist-artist-dancer Manthe Ribane both hail from South Africa, where Manthe still resides, while Okzharp lives in the London where he is a DJ and producer, initially cutting his teeth in LV, who in 2007 were one of the very first acts signed to Hyperdub. Manthe has been at the forefront of South Africa's cutting edge fashion, art and dance worlds for over a decade. After leaving LV, Okzharp and Manthe started collaborating, going on to release two well-received EPs on Hyperdub, 'Dumella 113' and 'Tell Your Vision', recorded in Joburg and London respectively. The recording of 'Closer Apart' reflects the title. Okzharp says 'Most of the music came out of headphone moments in hotel rooms, planes and airports in the brief periods of time that we spent together.' Describing Manthe as a co -producer, he continues 'She selected instrumental sketches and we developed them together, sometimes just keeping the bare bones or a melody or rhythm, or trying different elements or sounds.' Even though the album was built long distance, the short periods they spent together were the ground zero for creativity. Okzharp recalls 'One particular moment in Milan last year, we had a whole free day before our flight so we visited the Salone di Mobile design show. We were so inspired by an installation there just walking around, listening to the amazing soundtrack. That evening our flight was delayed, so we sat on the floor of the airport terminal putting musical ideas down for 'Time Machine' on the laptop speakers and writing the lyrics. "Tic Toc time, we'll be fine / Airport queues, cerulean blues / Viper trails cross the skies / Lights reflect in your eyes...' ' 'Closer Apart' has a softness and openness that contrasts the tougher sound of the EPs. Manthe explains, 'The new music is a 360 turn, an expression of my 'Lady' side. I grew up listening to Jazz, Classic and Gospel, I am a very soft spoken person, and it resonates with being confident with that. It's been crazy finding balance and finding a smart way to strengthen my weaknesses, I had to trust the process.'

Rian Treanor - A Rational Tangle

Repress

Rian Treanor re-imagines the intersection of club culture, experimental art and computer music with 'A Rational Tangle', his debut quartet of glass-cut, 150bpm hyperprisms for The Death of Rave.Galvanising and accelerating garage and techno with cuttingly crisp tonal diction and pointillist percussive palette, 'A Rational Tangle' demonstrates Treanor's adroit and finely-nurtured rhythmelodic instincts through a quicksilver syntax of kerned, polychromatic 2-step patterns and whipsmart, emotive jit music.Functionally titled A1 thru B2, the EP's four tracks vacillate ping-pong ballistics and recursive melodic motifs constructed in Max/MSP, dancing from pendulous, aerobic minimalism to taut, synthetic tabla grooves with grid melting nous, whilst also taking in gamelan-esque hypeR&B through wormholes of smeared and curdled harmonics, plus one dead lush section of Detroit-via-Yorkshire styled hi-tech funk. The production is stainlessly dry and future-proof whilst his arrangements are considerately efficient, yet it's all blessed with a pop or 'floor-ready turn of phrase that reveals new kinks, fills and twysts with each return listen.Whichever angle you view it from 'A Rational Tangle' forms a rewarding introduction to the work of a very promising and distinct new voice in electronic music.Rian Treanor (b. 1988) is an artist and producer based in the North of the UK. His practice references the dynamic cut-ups of Fluxus and Dada as much as UK dance music to present an insightful and compelling musical world of interlocking and fractured components. He has formerly studied with Lupo at Berlin's Dubplates & Mastering, besides years spent running the Enjoy artspace in Leeds.

Pinch & Mumdance - Control / Strobe Light

* The production duo behind the rave-new world sounds of 'Turbo Mitzi' and 'Big Slug (Feat. Riko Dan)' have been busy in the studio recently and return to form with 2 killer cuts designed to shock out the dancefloor.

* 'Control' picks up the tempo from the duos previous cuts, rolling at 140 beats per minute, in it's apocalyptic form. Powerful pads create the tension before sub-heavy kicks and cybernetic snares come pounding and chopping in, building up the mood before a radioactively charged Reese-bassline emerges, rising to the surface, unleashing its terror. This is a stone-cold banger.

* 'Strobe Light' returns to the more familiar 128bpm tempo that the pair have previously worked with. Taking a quite unique approach, 'Strobe Light' builds evermore, moving into the light, layering percussion up as an intoxicating drone of swirling strings swells and swells - entrancing and empowering in equal measures. this is a highly versatile DJ tool that also makes for an engrossing listen from start to finish. Refined dancefloor ear candy.

Synkro AKA Joe McBride teams up with veteran Arovane AKA Uwe Zahn for a sublime collaborative EP on Apollo. ' Refractive (Index)' sees the duo exploring their shared love of broken beats and dreamy soundscapes. The pair are also connected through their affection for Yamaha's venerable handheld sequencer, the QY700 (also a favourite of dutch lo-fi house master Legowelt) Arovane a long time stalwart of the acclaimed City Centre Offices imprint explains: "Everything started with a detail in an interview with Joe that grabbed my attention. I spotted a QY700 sequencer from yamaha on one photo. I used this piece of gear for decades to sequence all of my hardware and to produce my music. It's part of my trademark sound of rhythm programming."One of the factors that makes the QY700 beloved is it's ability to change parameters in realtime to shuffle, shift, expand or compress the timing of each pattern independently. It's touch can be felt throughout the oscillating rhythmic figures that wend through the gauzy pads and drifting melodies."We share the same wavelength when it come to breakbeats, musical taste and melodies,' Arovane continues 'This EP is the beginning of something special!"

Arikon - The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling

* Arikon is a solo project of Berlin-based drummer & producer, Arik Hayut - half of doom-tech duo Gainstage with Pierce Warnecke. Loyal to the sonic concepts of Gainstage, Arikon presents The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling, a solo enterprise into deepest 'drum & drone'. Hypnotizing distorted polyrhythms puncture through shards of fragmented melodies, producing potent mixtures of desperate tin can banging, a panoramic sonic scope, and the bleakest of soundsystem nightmares. Across the album, Arikon deploys an arsenal of samples plus electronic, acoustic, and self-constructed percussion instruments, constructing eight powerful productions that manage to embody both brute force and delicate decay.

* Formerly active in Tel Aviv's leftfield experimental scene during the 90's, Hayut made Berlin his permanent home for working on his own projects while composing and performing music for off-theater and contemporary dance. In 2004, a severe health crisis initially threw Hayut into crisis, slowing down his activity to a standstill. However, the precarious process of his fortunate recovery contributed to Hayut involving himself more deeply with concepts of time, death, and decay.

* Inspired by the decadent still life paintings of the Flemish Baroque, the cover artwork for The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling comprises a bowl of decomposing fruit. Like the music, its aim is to illustrate the beauty and perfection of the decay process, whilst also referring to the West's hyper-capitalistic, technology-centric culture. In recent years a new form of 'digital life' has been born, whereby all data - regardless of its worth or importance - is mummified, reproduced, and distributed with no real disintegration or loss in quality. This new digital life is resulting in a sort of 'frozen death', ending the hitherto natural cycle of life.

* The songs on themselves are inspired by the 'beasts of holiness' - mythological monsters that appear   in the Hebrew bible and the Jewish apocrypha (non-canonical scriptures). There's the punching of bassy thuds out of an oceanic ambient swell throughout 'Tanin Gadol', named after the ancient water monster of Babylonian times. The dense net of fumbling scrapes and amp-busting hits of noise on 'Nahash Akalaton' similarly refer to a titular sea-snake monster, its tendrils lashing out of the speakers aggressively. These demons symbolize a force of evil equal in power, yet in direct opposition to the monotheistic deity of their time. They were therefore neither acknowledged nor canonized in much dominant scripture. Arikon invokes these demons across The Prophet's Blood Is Boiling, setting them loose across these gnarled noisy chambers of pummeling percussion and cracked sampled detritus.

D-Operation Drop - Ghori / Natty Coil

Ghori from D-Operation Drop is a driving soundsystem roller with a low swung beat crushed through 80's sci-fi algorithms and burnt onto analog tape. On the flip is Natty coil, one of the crew's most requested tracks, a masterful mix of organic bass and robotic shuffled hi hats from these mix scientists.

D-Operation Drop are a crew from Italy who gravitated around their love of bass, releasing music on labels such as Artikal, Lion Charge, Zam Zam and Moonshine, gaining support from the likes of J:Kenzo, N Type, Bukez Finezt, and Dj Madd.

Digital & Spirit - The Revolution EP Pt. 1

Digital & Spirit return to Phantom Audio once more with one of their most heavyweight selections of recent times. Two bonafide classics in their own right, Digital's 'Deadline' and Spirit's 'Redial', have come together to once more wreak havoc on dance floors worldwide in the shape of 'Deaddial'. Next we have the cavernous subs and ethereal pads of 'Revolution' which both agree is one of their favourite works. 'Phantom 2018' reworks the timeless classic 'Phantom Force' into a new blend of dance floor destruction as those thumping tones and crashing beats are once again sparked into life for a quirkier yet equally devastating interpretation. Finally, what would 2018 be without a mammoth dub-tinged amen workout from the duo, unlike no other in 'Small World'.
