Very hot UK club action. TIP!

"Two Shell, the enigmatic London based duo exploring techno pop, release the cult hyper banger ‘home’ previously only available on the instantly sold-out white-label 12”. In 2021 the duo were featured in DJ mixes from electronic royalty, plays from Ben UFO, Four Tet, Jamie XX’s BBC Radio 1 essential mix. Home, uses earworm vocal chops, twitchy drums & heavy subbass for the dance. "

Various - Slam Jams Vol. 3

We have rolled around to one of my favourite forms of Holding Hands releases. The various artists goodness that is Slam Jams, this being number 3.

I have drafted in bangers of the highest calibre from the likes of Ste Roberts, Bolam, Inner Zone and Yosh. They go high, they go low, they go fast and they go...slightly less fast. If you like slammers, and I’m guessing that you do, then this will be a veritable day out at the fair for your ears.

OK enough of my blather. Go and listen to the damn things yourself and decide if you like them, rather than trying to work it out from reading a bloody press release you weirdos.

All four tracks are produced and sculpted for the club. They want big sound systems and dark rooms. Close your eyes, hold hands and experience transcendental space flight...

Zed Bias feat MC Rumpus - Neighbourhood (feat El B, Dawn Raid remixes)

Long time underground UK stalwart Zed Bias dropped this - one of his many seminal cuts - back in 1999. Now, the dark garage classic 'Neighbourhood' gets reissued alongside some remixes. In its original form, it has an alluring vocal charm with unsettling chords over a grinding bassline and sharp percussion. The El B remix brings fleshier low ends and more swagger and shuffle while the vocals remain in place to blow up your spot. To close out the EP, Dawn Raid remixes with a high-energy jungle sound full of old-school signifiers. A proper EP for proper dance floors.

UP HIGH COLLECTIVE - KOINONIA LP

“Cinematic electronica embraces intelligent Indian infused beat making”.

Belgian beat collective Up High Collective return with their new album 'Koinonia.' Their second full-length comes five years after their debut album in 2018. For 'Koinonia' they have invited Belgian iconic drummer Lander Gyselinck (STUFF.) and several other guest musicians. The first single 'Koi' is available now, the record is set for release on Wednesday October 11 on vinyl, Bandcamp and via all digital platforms via San Kofa Rhythm Records.

"Going with the cinematic tides of sound: first single 'Koi' features compelling South-Asian sitar, imminent strings, drums by Lander Gyselinck and carefully constructed beat making."

Spearheaded by producer duo Koen De Petter and Renaldo Maria, this record is Up High Collective’s most ambitious music project to date and has been in the works since 2015. The name of the record - Koinonia is Greek for "fellowship" or "community" - refers to the intense and inspiring interplay between the collective and several musicians they invited to contribute.

Raw analog recordings and beats by the producer duo, brimming with imperfections and samples from original Indian music, laid the foundation for live studio sessions by Bert Cornelis, one of the few sitar players in Belgium, drummer Lander Gyselinck (Lander & Adriaan, STUFF.), double bassist Jens Similox (Orchestre Collone) and multi- talented bassist Boris van Overschee (Okon, Delv!s). From their intrinsic penchant for deconstruction, the live elements were cut up by the producers, heavily rearranged and presented as new sounds. After several sessions in their Up High Studio (Leuven), carefully constructed collages gradually started to form with all of its layers filling the deepest corners of the sound space.

The result is a record that balances perfectly between cinematic electronica with complex harmonies to get lost in and solid club oriented beats with crunching textures and off the grid rhythmic patterns.

"All of these songs share an underlying, invisible force bound by the intense interplay and mutual inspiration between us and the live musicians.

Jana Rush - Painful Enlightenment LP 2x12"

Chicago's Jana Rush returns with "Painful Enlightenment", an intense emotional rollercoaster of disfigured samples, quivering electronics and vagrant percussion. As implied by the title, the album is a document of her own personal growth through struggles with depression and suicidal thoughts, a glimpse into a dark period of her life amid learning the art of letting go. Her debut for Planet Mu is the follow-up to her twisted "Pariah" LP on Objects Limited. It's euphonic and uplifting, even blissful, yet equally chilling, and at times a difficult listening experience. Jana says "This album is not a footwork album. It's more like dark experimental listening music, an opportunity to be myself without judgement!" The album opens up with the pessimistic "Moanin’", its gorgeous, blazing sax solo pulled back and forth like it was being played through a possessed tape recorder. Baneful bass pulsates over dozens of maniacal vocal samples on "Suicidal Ideation", an absolutely mesmerizing collage of beauty and terror with a runtime of nine minutes. Moody guitar plucks cry over an intricate bed of micropercussion and erratic low-end blasts on the title track, one of the more sombre moments of the album. At the halfway mark, the record takes a dark, twisted turn, as "Disorientation" well, disorients, with its thick layers of untraceable alien sounds unfolding andcontracting back into themselves. Thick layers of time-stretched textures and bewildering rhythms meet masterfully placed snares on "Intergalactic Battle", featuring Teklife’s DJ Paypal. On "Drivin’ Me Insane", Jana and collaborator Nancy Fortune stretch three words back and forth and inside-out over the course of three minutes, using every last gasp and sibilance possible. The album closes with Paypal making his second appearance. "Just a Taste" is an encore featuring many of the fundamental sonics that make up the LP, haunting horns and paranoid voices struggle to speak over fluctuating low-end harmonics. An established veteran from the world of ghetto house and juke who cut her teeth on Dance Mania records in the late nineties, Jana has the stripes, so to call her an outsider would be fictitious, yet she is a true unicorn within the history of that realm and becomes more and more alienated from formulas and trends on each new record she creates. "Painful Enlightenment" is full of dense, intricate abstractions, paired with rapidly moving structures and is unlikely to sound the same twice, as everylisten exposes new layers of its vibrant, transcendental details.

Anushka - Yemaya LP 2x12"

‘Yemaya’ is the long-awaited new album and Tru Thoughts debut from future soul and electronica duo Anushka. Therelease features proceeding singles “You My Love”, “Speak To Me” and “Brave” which have seen support from the likes of GillesPeterson, Lauren Laverne, Jamz Supernova, Nemone (BBC 6Music), Jack Saunders (BBC Radio 1), EARMILK, Music Is My Sanctuary, Clash Magazine and Toshio Matsuura.

Released on limited edition transparent numbered double vinyl, the LP takes its name from the Orisha Yemaya – the Goddess ofthe Sea, protector of women and the Eternal Mother in the Santeria/Yoruba religion. It is believed in Santeria that Yemaya guidesand supports her children, helping them to grow; as explored with the reference to the life-giving essence of water in focus track“Bad Weather”. Celebrating their progression and those who have helped them on the way, the title expresses the oneness that theduo felt making the record.

This growth is explored on album opener “So Far Journey”. Written by Victoria Port (singer/songwriter) as a “call to the ancestors”,the track explores coming back to yourself and who you truly are after a period of feeling displaced and lost. With astrally chargedsynths from Max Wheeler (producer), it sits alongside the cosmic love story of “You My Love” and the luminous “Serenity”.Speaking of the latter, Port adds: “It’s that feeling when a person makes it feel like home wherever you are. When something isstressful and you know they can help you find your peace”.

Pellicola represents five fundamental episodes of the artist’s childhood, expressed through introspective elegant melodies. The compositions lead us to visualize the abstract emotional landscape with nocturnal blue tones through the timbres of the Moog Sub37.

This synth being the main instrument that characterizes the timbre of this mini album with a purely electronic sound where bpm moves between 60 and 150.

The execution free of quantization allows us to fully absorb the emotion and humanity of these songs that develop over the musician's memories, making those immortal and no longer vulnerable like a burning film.

Nazar - Guerrilla LP 2x12"

Nazar

Guerrilla LP 2x12"

2x12inchHDBLP046
Hyperdub
13.03.2020

Angolan producer 'Nazar' coined the term “Rough Kuduro” as an interpretation of the Kuduro musical style, translating the upbeat sound to expose the uglier side of what he saw in Angola, heard first on 2019’s astonishing six track ‘Enclave’ EP.

‘Guerrilla’, Nazar’s debut album, examines his family’s collective memory and country's past, threading together oral histories, political realities, and artful re-imaginings of direct horrors, to document his personal story of the 25 year Angolan civil war and it's aftermath in a detailed and episodic manner, particularly how his father's rank as a Rebel General led to a prolonged and continuing separation of his family across continents.

Nazar tells his story both impressionistically, and at times with stark directness. Rumbling bass overlaid with piercing synths mixes with field-recorded Ovimbundu folk song and a distant waterfall. The sound of a cocking gun leads into tumbling Kuduro beats and driving low-end bass. Elsewhere, slow, menacing dub suggests violent civil unrest, while reversed vocal shouts and protesting Portuguese rhymes evoke a pervasive atmosphere of chaos.

... Further in, we hear Nazar’s mother recalling the day she left home aged 16 to join the rebel movement, his sisters harmonising in the background over field recordings made in the ruins of his grandparent's home. After the housey ‘FIM-92 Stinger’, the album snaps back to the ferocity of conflict with the guttural ‘Immortal’, its deep bass shrouded in haunting shrieks driven by clicks and distortion, reflecting a time in the very early years of the rebel movement when witchcraft was used to procure immortality.

‘End Of Guerrilla’ is the final reprieve, reflecting the euphoria and melancholy that came with eventual ceasefire … “It’s about the end, but also dignity and remaining standing despite being mutilated. Making your voice heard despite not having anything to say.”

PARRIS - SOAKED IN INDIGO MOONLIGHT LP

Spot varnish front and back covers, designed by Will Bankhead.

London born and raised artist Parris releases his much anticipated debut album, Soaked in Indigo Moonlight. The full length release is released via Can You Feel The Sun, the label he co-founded with Berlin based producer and DJ, Call Super. Regarded in the scene as a slow-burning unique talent, Parris’ discography includes releases via The Trilogy Tapes, Wisdom Teeth, Idle Hands and Hemlock all of which helped him carve out his own distinctive place within the contemporary electronic music landscape. The album is a sharp piece of storytelling that weaves together stripped-down, club rooted pop, expansive experiments in rhythm and a sense of air and space that allows collaborations to flourish. In a eulogy to friendship and skateboarding, Eden Samara turns Skater's World into a carefree anthem. James K's vocals breathe a frayed hopefulness to closer falling in the waves. Alongside these two rising talents, Carmen Villian and Call Super contribute with symbiotic visions that underpin the ideas and spontaneity at the heart of the record. It is an album that is difficult to imagine ever coming from anywhere but London steeped, as it is, in the wilful desire for idiosyncrasy that lies at the heart of the best of UK culture. As the fog from over a year of lockdowns lifts, this talented producer is stepping out with his most impressive body of work to date and a whole new sense of direction and purpose.

Various - With The Pulse

Introducing Cutcross, created to champion the melting pot of bass-centric sounds teetering around 140 bpm. Heading up the concept is Sicaria Sound, a DJ duo who since their inception set out to explore and expand on the possibilities of these sounds whilst spotlighting underground artists. Cutcross is therefore their next step in supporting the forward-thinking music that they've drawn for when curating sets.

"CXT003: With The Pulse" is the second themed compilation from the label, this time with distinctly percussive driven sounds formulating each track. Originally curated with dancefloors in mind, the current global standstill means for most of us these tunes are to be enjoyed from local settings - and that's not to their detriment. Each track offers something different sonically to get you moving, regardless of where you are right now.

Mercury 200 - Supply and Demand

After an interminable wait due to the vinyl manufacture crisis, Mercury 200 is back stronger than ever, supplying some homegrown material that is conceivably as potent as GOTG001. This time they teamed up with 2 legendary OG's, Apoc Krysis & MCR-T, to spice up your musical experience and bring you the best of the two worlds. Dealing at the intersection of breakbeat, Ghetto tech and trance, this record will definitely catch your attention. Parental Advisory Explicit Content. Legally available only on prescription.

For the first track of the vinyl, they teamed up with the Atlanta based rapper Apoc Krysis to blend two opposite genres in a Memphis rap infused techno banger. This unique collaboration put on the table whats the both side has the best to offer: powerful and lethal flow. This track is here to pick you up and put you back on your feet after a breakup. When nobody's there for you, this track is.

Full of fast and filthy grooves "Caramelo" is the track that will make you sweat. A heavy stomping beat with devilish vocals ready to make your ghetto inner self dance. Heavy grooves and a powerful bassline this track will slap you into consciousness. 100% Floor impact guaranteed.

On the flip side we start with an outstanding collaboration with Berlin most notorious player in the ghetto house-techno scene: MCR-T. An uplifting, instant serotonin booster.

Building up the tension at the start with a breakbeat and OG (original gangsta) lyrics, the tracks eventually turns into four to the floor house infused groove. Party killer guaranteed!

Last track but not the least consists in a classic mercury 200 signature breakbeat track. A fine blend of trancy and infectious melodies with a short rap hook and chest punching drums.

The Human Pet

12inchDIAG029
DIAGONAL
25.07.2023

Repress!

Elon Katz (White Car, Streetwalker) aligns perfectly with Diagonal in a prickling debut vocal
release, The Human Pet; his first original solo issue in four years, containing an intensely personal,
puckered perspective on electronic dance music and experimental pop.
Structured around a schizoid yet coherent juncture of EBM, IDM, curdled rock music and art school
techno-pop, The Human Pet is riddled with idiosyncratic notions on 'cryptic topics like rebirth,
nullification in stream speed adaptivity, dependence and wealth inequality' to portray a unique
intellect and sonic vocabulary operating at the crux of his expressive powers.
The project began circa 2012, around the time of Katz's relocation from L.A. to art school in
Chicago, and cocks a canny snook, both thru candid lyrics and obsessive edits, back towards the
megatropolis where he was born and spent much of his youth. It can therefore be considered an
attempt to better understand himself in relief of big city manias by channelling and parsing his
own stubborn outsider personality from the madness.
To our ears it feels like a concise dissection of Chicago's industrial history and Californian digital
psychedelia; probing at their twisted, fluoro guts with the inquisitive nature of a mad scientist
or psycho-analyst between the yelping, warped and hyper-piquant yacht boogie of The Rhino
Powder of New Sensitivity and a heavily affected dislocation of harmonised pop hooks and
whirring body mechanics in Clean Crash.
It all occupies a strange perch between introspective and exuberant, veering from mid-'90s
AFXian pop rephlexion in You Are Alone, to signature Diagonal tackle in the gas-chugging EBM-pop
force of The Human Pet, whereas Unarmed twists into fractal phantasia, all of which maintain a
thread of logic that belies the record's vintaging period of refinement and distillation.
There can be little doubt that this is one of the most complex, rigorous and distinctive in Diagonal's
catalogue. Closer attention is required. File amidst records by Luc Van Acker, Aphex Twin, Savant,
Powell...

CFCF returns with a glossy, euphoric and bright 150 BPM utopian shimmer and robotic vocal cooings courtesy of the mysteriously and adorably rendered vocaloid boy, “Troy”. First recorded in 2018, and blessed in 2020 with a pair of remixes from fellow Canadian dancefloor legends Priori & Ciel, the 9-minute-plus, 3/4 thump of “Never Going Home” has been a staple of CFCF DJ sets for the last few years. Montreal’s Priori’s mix brings a heady braindance crackle, with thick breaks, pinging signals and FM bass, while Toronto’s Ciel goes deep on a dubby and skittery ‘homesick bounce’. CFCF himself closes out the package with a wistful acoustic reprise suitable for a post-euphoria bittersweet sunrise.

A hymn to languorous afterhours, which is completed by a bathmix of the same song, proposed by another important figure of the Neukölln scene: Leo Zylberberg. Bowling out of Offenbach with a swing in his step, Dogpatrol returns for round three on Sneaker Social packing another four-strong payload of mutant rave clout. If you caught the previous missives then you should have some idea of where he's coming from, getting freaky with rave signifiers and laying down ear-snagging swerves to juice up the dance good and proper.

On this latest release we dip-dive into the grime-licked garage-tech shuffle of 'Non PGR' only for the script to get flipped at the mid-section in favour of diced up Think breaks. The pressure doesn't ease once Nasty King Kurl comes on board for a rolling remix strapped to a disgustingly massive kick drum impulse.

'Sassafras' takes a leaner approach to bleepy breakbeat contortions on the B side, holding down the arrangement and letting the track rip when everyone's wound up and hungry. NKK returns again to partner up with our resident Dog for the collab joint 'Creepin', chopping out the RnB samples and whipping up square wave synth flurries shouting out that overlooked substrata of dubstep - the Purple sound. It's a cheeky hint at the deep-level affinity for all rave gear which powers this EP, another sure step on from your favourite canine soundsystem practitioner.

Low End Activist - Hostile Utopia LP 2x12"

Casting a self-reflexive lens over his roots via the medium of crushing, future-rushing soundsystem sonics, Low End Activist returns to Sneaker Social Club with a full-length of monumental proportions.

When the Low End Activism 12” ignited on Sneaker in 2019, it paid tribute to the Blackbird Leys estate in Oxford, UK, where LEA originates from. In the shadow of social inequality and strengthened by the unity of the multi-ethnic community, Blackbird Leys still imposes a powerful influence on LEA’s work, even as he’s stepped out onto Seagrave for last year’s Game Theory album and notched up the first couple of releases on his own self-titled label.

On this new album, Hostile Utopia sums up the conflicting emotions attached to memories of home – how it’s possible to feel nostalgic for the griminess of urban and suburban Britain, its ordinary tales of bitterness and frustration, but also its intrinsic passion and solidarity. At a time when social division is actively engineered by Machiavellian forces, real conviviality at street level feels like an impossible dream.

LEA communicates these tensions through a style which is becoming his signature – dynamic bass torsion and chiseled, fractalised rhythms slugging around the 130 mark. It’s moody like a UK-themed record ought to be, but it’s not morose. There’s fierceness in every snap and rumble, as the legacies of hardcore, jungle, dubstep and grime pour into the casing prior to the gunpowder lighting.

On previous LEA releases, the MC roll call has pointed to some of the most vital voices touching the mic in the present day. Flowdan, Sikka Rymes and Trim all had something different to impart over the riddims, and now Hostile Utopia expands on that with the most extensive show of lyrical strength yet. Mez lights up the woozy, abstract grime swerve of ‘Mercenary’ in a musical style. Emz brings a ruthlessly sharp verbal steez to ‘GetGet’, Killa P gets busy toasting over ‘DFRNT STYLE’ and ‘Superhighway’ carries the dexterous hip-hop flow of Cadence Weapon.

In between those standout tracks, LEA expresses just as much in the production. Tracks brimming with stories to impart, laden with symbols masquerading as samples and draped in aural garb that firmly places Hostile Utopia in a place, a mood, that could only belong to the UK. It’s a hybrid sound just like the society it sprang from, and therein lies its power.

Blawan - “sick!”
Bruce - "ah yeh fkn nawty bizness as per from LEA. bigups Jamie u absolute don!"
Mumdance - "Enjoyed all of these, respect"
