ARTIFICIAL MONDAY - ILLUSIONS OF IDENTITY LP

ARTIFICIAL MONUMENTS was an all-stars dark minimal / synthpop project from Copenhagen, originally formed by PATRICK RINGSBORG (MOTH, CHAINSAW EATERS, LITTLE BOY LOST, ECHO PEOPLE ET AL.) JOHANNAH JØRGENSEN (METRO CULT) AND KIM WOLF ANDERSEN (MOTH, CHAINSAW EATERS ET AL.). They were inspired by bands like Iron Curtain, Yazoo, Neon Judgement, Eleven Pond and Turquoise Days. Active between 2013 and 2015 only, the group disbanded due to Johanna’s health problems, leaving their debut album ‘Illusions of Identity’ on the cutting board. But it was posthumously finished over the next four years with the help of an incredible array of fellow artists from the new wave of post punk, who contributed their talents to the completion of the album: SALLY DIGE, ZOSIA HOŁUBOWSKA (MALA HERBA, PRISON, HÄNDE), INA NOIRE & LISA LØEBEKKEN (TECHNE), SOFIE JACOBI, CECILIA WÖRLÉN (PRISON) AND CHRISTOFFER BAGGE (METRO CULT, TOTEM).

ILLUSIONS OF IDENTITY is an awesome minimal synth pop album, as simple as that. Being crafted with the help of so many skillful people who spilled their talents into the melting pot, nothing but a masterpiece could come out of this project. We are proud to finally bring it to you on a limited, hand numbered, TRANSLUCENT BLUE VINYL EDITION OF 275 COPIES, housed in a matt finish sleeve with printed inner sleeve (lyrics and credits) and including a download code. The download features two additional demo versions not on the vinyl.

DONARRA / ABYSSY - CLOSE EP

Donarra/Abyssy

CLOSE EP

12inchALV004
Alley Version
20.05.2019

Italian electronic music mastermind ABYSSY and the Marseille underground hero DONARRA, share for the ALLEY VERSION's 4th release the split E.P. "CLOSE".

ABYSSY aka Mayo Soulomon has, over the years, released records of great interest for Mathematics, New Interplanetary Melodies and many other labels, marked by Detroit and Chicago influences reworked in his personal complex cut.
DONARRA comes to ALLEY VERSION after two beautiful E.P. for Skylax Records and La Chinerie, and recently spotted with its synth-dark-industrial-punk moniker Cardinal & Nun, on L.I.E.S.

The opening ABYSSY's "Close To Me", an obscure rough track totally jacked with the legendary rhythm sampler E-MU SP1200, is an instant cult.
In the following "Lower Michigan Ave", a hypnotic dark plot of analog synthesizers runs on a leftfield rhythm cut, while a whiny female voice condenses the air.

First track of DONARRA's side, "Nostalgie Futuriste", is a surreal sound voyage where are merged Chicago House and Zen atmospheres.
In the culminating Detroit style banger "Rivières Lumineuses", the trippy movements of percussions and synthetic melodies are pure magic.

Exclusively on limited 12" vinyl.

ROBOTIKO REJEKTO - COMMUNICATION 87-92

Robotiko Rejekto was created in Frankfurt am Main in 1987 by RaHen and Talla 2XLC. Both musicians already worked together in the early 80's on projects like Axodry, Moskwa TV and other incarnations as part of the "Sound of Frankfurt" scene.

With the mega success of the first single “Rejekto” (1987) released by Techno Drome International / ZYX Records, RaHen and Talla 2XLC were seamlessly able to live up to the earlier success with Axodry. They used on this track some lyrics in Romanian telling a fictional short story about two Romanian musicians: Dumitru Constantin and Andrei Vasile. This was followed by other two top chart singles: "Umsturz Jetzt!" (1988) and “Confusion" (1989). Shortly after, Talla 2XLC quit to concentrate on other projects, however some also in cooperation with RaHen.

For a short period of time, Kurt Ader joined the project and with RaHen produced the album "Cyper Space" (1990) including some new songs together with the previous singles. The misspelling of the album title is attributed to a mistake of the label ZYX Records. “Injection” (1990) and "Hangar 18” (1991) were the chosen singles published to support this album. A couple of other singles, “Density / Pure Control" and “Technology” (1992) came next but unfortunately with not a major success following by a hiatus of the band.

After a long pause, Robotiko Rejekto made a comeback in 2012 to release a new album. Currently formed by Ralf Henrich (aka RaHen) and Ivo Draganac (aka Marco Drago), they continue to work and touring intensely.

"Communication 87-92” is a special selection of classic tracks and remixes from those golden years. Limited edition of 500 copies on double vinyl, gatefold sleeve and exclusive sticker.

JAMES FERRARO - Requiem for Recycled Earth

Contemporary genius James Ferraro pushes his hybrid style to beautiful effect with a 62 minute
opus striking an elegiac nerve of brilliantly slippery soundtrack music that short circuits the
difference between Philip Glass’ music for ‘Koyaanisqatsi’, the kind of schlocky tones you might
expect on a Graham Hancock video about ancient civilisations and some Hans Zimmer score for a
wide-eyed Spielberg epic, as if re-imagined by 0PN and Kara-Lis Coverdale.
The piece breaks down into 11 parts, conducting a spellbinding traverse from the primal,
metallic noise and buoyant chorale of ‘Embryo’ to the bittersweet curdle of ’Xerces Blau’, taking
in spectacular FM synthesis sound designs with the transitions between ‘Omega Generation’
and ‘Cyber Seed’ or the perceptive depth to ‘Recycled Sky that show off an enhanced grasp of
production nous, all while still allowing for that Mona Lisa smirk to his sound with the title and
EDM nods in ‘Malign Blossom’.
As ever with Ferraro, though, not all is quite what it seems. He somehow manages to highlight an
ambiguity between the objective reality and its mediated, subjective reflection, with a music that
speaks to the impending, heightening drama of the situation, but also the saccharine melodrama
of weepy emoji-adorned social media statuses (#Attenborough) and the well-meaning but
ultimately piecemeal measures taken to avoid the inevitable

Be-2 - Minimum Unit Of Human Existence

From a new label set up by Claudio Mate, partner in the Dub-Ito label, responsible for the killer Soloist & Second Apartment and Dark Star LPs. Mate is a Japanese music fanatic, who has guested on Japan Blues' NTS show. His painstaking research in this field unearthed the works of Be-2.

Be-2 was the brainchild of cosmic rock guitarist Zen Oikawa and Psycho. The band released two flexi discs and a cassette on Oikawa's Inner Space Records in the early 80s.

Prior to that, Oikawa ran a cosmic rock band called Space Mandala, Be-2 was his merging of that style with the new wave moves of the early 80s. Since then, he has been music director for projects for anime giants Studio Ghibli, contributing to the soundtracks of Kurenai no Butta (Porco Rosso) and Omohide Poro Poro (Only Yesterday).

BE-2 "Minimum In Survivable Human Race Unit" was composed between 1982 and 1984. Available on vinyl for first time, and featuring unreleased tracks. A blend of of proto-techno, noise, ambient, channelling Manuel Gottsching, Ashra Temple, Klaus Schulze, and The Durutti Column,.

Low Jack - Jingles du Lieu-dit

Low Jack continues to rudely shape the dancehall in his own style with ‘Jingles du
Lieu-dit’ - the sequel to 2018’s ‘Riddims du Lieu-dit’ - packing six innovative mutations
inspired by radio jingles, YouTube dembow megamixes, sound effects and sonic clichés
Picking up where his screwed industrial dancehall edits left off last year, Low Jack racks
up six anti-nuke riddims from the bassbins of Brittany, churning up pendulous grooves in
acres of murky dub space with a patented sleight-of-hand.
Oscillating weightless, dematerialised, and heavily present frequencies, Low Jack turns
the dancehall into a flux of ‘90s ragga duppies and now ting reggaeton, leaving its rugged
structures notably free of vocals but full of characterful samples, idents, and studio elves
that can’t help but connote the artist’s moodily crafty and kinetic style, lying right on the
cusp of darkside and party-ready concerns.
Up in it, he executes a scything re-chop on Richard Browne’s ‘Baddis’ riddim teasing
out its eastern motifs into woozy shapes on ‘More Speed’, whereas ‘Dinner’ exerts a
hypnotic spin on reggaeton’s rub ’n tug rhythms and ’Shell’ spirals headlong into a vortex
of soundsystem ephemera. Down below, meanwhile, ‘Lasers’ finds its range in massively
swollen bass and GRM-like cyberdub dimensions, along with the windswept dancehall of
‘Find Them’ and the outstanding, hydraulic pressure of ‘Wheel.’

Black Gardenia is a mesmerizing aesthetic sound experience, taking the listener on abstract journeys and into cinematic sceneries. The title track "Silent Rain" opens the A-side with a soft and emotional fusion of drones and saxophone, followed by the sovereign and psychedelic slow groove of the track "Aphex Twin shot my neck". The B-side is a dancefloor killer combination between Sunil Sharpe's intelligent techno remix of “Silent Rain” and Gamapawa's featuring track "Untitled Reconstruction", where drums and saxophone reach the speed of 150 bpm.

DJ B. LODA - EXPERIMENTAL MUSIC PROGRAM 01/94 MIXTAPE

Italian club culture pioneer Beppe Loda, has played more parties and mixed more genres than Jesus (according to Vice Magazine) and his contribution to dance music cannot be underestimated (thanks DJ Harvey). He refined his unique sound and skills, during his long residency at the mythical Typhoon club in Italy from 1980-1987, hypnotising thousands of dancers every week and recording some of the greatest mixtapes ever made (thanks Vice Magazine again!).

New Berlin Based label Protofuture, with its “Typhoon Tapes” series, decided to bring back to life, some of this these mixtapes. probably Focussing on the lesser-known and not non on Youtube'd (yet) between tapes from more than 200 available that were recorded, with the goal being to expose showcase them as, what we consider to be, an important reference heritage, for the present and the future generations of deejays, diggers and music lovers.

“The Experimental Music Program 01/94 was recorded around may '94 at the Sound Music Room club in the north of Italy. Which was the club opened by the same owner of Typhoon, after the that legendary club closed in 1987. It is a very little-known or heard tape, a mix of space rock, trip-hop, break beats and trance, that didn’t see the light, except for less then 100 copies dealt passed between a small circle of clubbers in the north of Italy at the time.”

**We have dug the original covers from 1994 and all the original stamps from the Typhoon era, also a good dose splash of leftover ink, that has been used to stamp all the tapes, from the 80’s till until this release. **So that means that it comes with the original cassette cover from 1994, hand-stamped using the original stamp and the ink from the Typhoon era.......authentic!

FLORIS VANHOOF - THE FLUID COMPUTER

Glorious new Floris Vanhoof LP co-released with Kraak. Comes with 24 page colour photo book.
. Modern experimental Belgian brilliance by this ever exciting artist. Do Not Sleep! 220 copies only. BIG TIP !

"This music and these pictures are made out of curiosity about how multiple images overlap on film
and how waves that arise in tiny electronic circuits translate to the outside world.
2 side long pieces and a selection of 24 slides printed on a lush 30 by 30 cm format give an
alternative for popular myths “our memory is a tape recorder” and “the exact photographic
memory”. When we take time to listen inside own heads, what appears might be closer to the
double exposed images and swirling tape manipulations then we imagine.

Whooshing echoes out of homemade musical circuits and acoustic recordings processed through
configuration of tape recorders and filters mix the same way as the colors in the layered images.

The title is comes from the book 'The Pattern on the Stone' by inventor W. Daniel Hillis. The word
'computer' usually refers to an electronic digital device. The book tells about the existence of
computers where water flows instead of electrons. This 'fluid computer' serves as a source of
inspiration for deconstructing the ubiquitous algorithmic machine, and for new technologies to be
revived through untracked sidetracks."

Various - HARD WORK/YOU ARE A SLAVE REMIXES

IND 003 is the 2nd Vinyl release on INDUSTRIA. Robi Insinna’s new project label. Industria is not just about music, but also products, art and more. This record one can say was planned a while back when Robi had a DJ gig together with Vox Low. The next day while meeting in the lobby for a late coffee and a croissant in a quiet Bordeaux Hotel, the idea came for a swap Remix on Vinyl. When Robi started Industria, he still had in mind that the second Vinyl release could be that swap. Guess both Artist coming from a similar background and working in a similar analog organic style liked the idea and knew what they would get sound wise would be something both have plenty to play with.

On the A side Vox Low remixed Robi’s HARD WORK, which was already released in 2018 including a remix by Die Wilde Jagd. Vox Low turned the track into a dark more dancefloor orientated version. Still with the trademark Vox Low sounds and Guitars.

On the B side Robi remixed You Are A Slave. He liked all the sounds so much that he thought it is better to keep as much from the original as possible, still trying to make it his own version. He added percussion to create a more funky/dark sound and extended the track. The dub was done in an old school kind of way. All the parts where laid out on a mixer and assigned to various tape delays and reverbs and would be dubbed real time, in the school of Mad Professor or Lee Perry. Not an easy approach and it needed several takes till it started making sense. All mistakes and organic things where important to this Dub.

NoCorner x Stone King
29.05.2019

If you managed to grab one of the limited 12″ with ‘Falling’ & ‘Light Show’ plus remixes – then you know what you’re in for here, and the chances of your captivation are already high…
If not, then here’s your chance for the full dive into E B U’s one-in-a-million sound world.
It’s a very special record, one of the most uniquely alluring albums we’ve heard in some time – and we’re sure this is only the beginning of her journey, so do yourself a favour and step inside now.

Throughout Hinge, Unnatural sounds and pitches exhale in melodic chants, ominous basslines resound and eerie loops fixate in this macabre ensemble. You are captive in her world. Moments of haunting clarity keep you wondering where she will take you next whilst strange narratives unfold. In her music and performances, her chameleonic visual display is charged with emotion, keeping you suspended in a state of flux as she orbits through the spectrum. ‘Stimulated by human behaviour and existence, she questions the very nature of being and invites the audience to explore through her cathartic performance.’

Her sound captures elements of the radiophonic qualities by electronic pioneers such as Delia Derbyshire, through to unlikely melody and harmony akin to that of Ryuichi Sakamoto or Laurie Anderson.

It’s an exploration of strange places with a weird & wonderful sphere, sonically capturing the colourful intensity of Alejandro Jodorowsky’s Holy Mountain, or perhaps sounding like a much more out-there, much more convincingly extra-terrestrial Space lady… These are just vague comparisons though… Essentially, her sound is a total world of it’s own.

Hinge, E B U’s debut album, is an outer body experience that will conjure up memories you never had before, images you can’t quite place but somehow relate to, and a sense of sweet disorientation as you slip into a whirlpool of shapeshifting melody, harmony and frequency.

Young Echo
29.05.2019

The 4th disc on Young Echo Records comes locked & loaded with Jabu re-works from the extended family: SKRS & Jay Glass Dubs at the controls!

Pressed to 12″ with two remixed cuts from Jabu’s Sleep Heavy LP on Blackest Ever Black, YE004 follows the murky lyrical showcase from Manonmars alongside O$VMV$M, and reaches out to two producers who have been operating with similar style & fashion to the YE family over the years – forward thinking, eyes-closed, ears-open individualism is the order of the day, and these two remixes showcase this unique application of sound in loose dub structures perfectly.

Each approach the originals with their own take on skewed & stretched dubwise styles – letting the vocals swerve & sway over hypnotic rhythms, off-kilter atmospherics and big belly bassline… Like the best of dub, there’s an instant infectiousness to the rhythm, and a new-found focus on the original elements of the song – however, it’s too easy to apply the dub-tag to this – SKRS & Jay Glass Dubs are doing their own thing – listen and hear for yourself.

Dive Reflex Service - Dive Reflex Service

Introducing Dive Reflex Service’s debut album on Limbo Tapes – 12 tracks of deeply enthralling downtempo sketches from one of the most mysterious outfits operating on the fringes of the Bristol underground.

Three cassette releases deep, rounding up a seriously respectable roster of talent, the label isn’t one to court hype or social media stats. A pure outlet for musical ideas and exploration with no ego – Limbo Tapes has been flying the flag for the more abstract beats coming out of different corners of Bristol, plus a few friends further afield.

With two compilations and one artist cassettes under their belt, the label have made the jump to vinyl in fine style, headed up by Dive Reflex Service who was a contributor to their second compilation.

It’s hard to pigeonhole Dive Reflex Services sound, which is no doubt why he/she/they have found a home here – Loosely hip-hop related, heavy with dubwise production techniques – thick washes of atmospherics & dense layers of stretched vocal phrases flow between low passed beats and high end FX. Flecks of eskibeat & dancehall jut through at points, never fully materialising, it’s these hints that keep the whole album fresh and very re-listenable. Immediately enjoyable and deeply rewarding upon repeated listening.

Michael O'Neill - The Binary Order

Michael O'neill

The Binary Order

12inchFUCKPUNK012
Fuck Punk
29.05.2019

Oh f*ck, this LONG awaited burner from Manchester-based socio-political underground vocal force Michael O’Neill is here, FINALLY

“Essentially, we’re dealing with problems here. Let’s call it the 0800-FUCKPUNK-helpline, Michael O’Neill is on the other side of the speaker and needs you to know, as the ‘proper’ press text aptly puts it below, and as Mr. Huxley already warned, we’re all taking too much of that fucking soma!
Well here’s your undiluted antidote. 100% honest, 100% direct, 100% no bullshit – take the hit, Micheal O’Neill is here with a wake up call for us all. The album is called ‘The Binary Order’ but you can also just call it a slam in the face to all weakhearts and vampires, because this is political power punk poetry… That’s four P’s: one for each knuckle.”

“Chewed up and spat out, targeted and watched.”
Surplus labour piles up in concrete reservations. The veneer of democracy is fading fast. Confusion reigns. Our subjection to the economy’s ravenous death drive is eased and obscured by Silicon Valley soma, street drugs and the media’s trivialising babble. Pop music’s part of the distraction, of course, but it doesn’t have to be.

‘Binary Order’ is the debut album from Michael O’Neill, a child of Irish immigrants born and raised in North Manchester. A polemic on culture, class and society, ‘The Binary Order’ is fiercely political and musically infectious.

“I’ve had enough of this avant-garde shit”

O’Neill can rant like a Mancunian Mark Stewart when it suits him, but he’s a fine storyteller too. Privileged social butterflies, desperate addicts, vapid pop stars, and frazzled info-workers pass by in vivid character sketches. Lead track ‘One Rule’ is an anthem for the dispossessed millions – the clear-eyed urgency of its chorus contrasts bitterly with samples of a royal correspondent, fawning abjectly.

Produced by Sam Weaver (Hungryghost / Charles Hayward) with O’Neill, and additional input from electro-acoustic composer Danny Saul (‘Beowulf’ / ‘The Last Kingdom’), the album’s visionary production combines hip-hop swagger with clattering dub and cleansing acid. Its surgical hooks, unflinching lyrics and moments of sonic chaos are pacey and possessed of an irresistible narrative flow, you’ll be lucky to hear anything as bracing in 2019, or beyond.

"has pretty much been a ‘those who know, know’ sorta figure, but word of mouth isn’t enough for an album this good." - The Quietus

LCSM (LIKWID CONTINUAL SPACE MOTION) - EP1

Recording as Likwid Continual Space Motion, IG Culture’s latest afrofuturist, and broken beat venture is the score to a new sci-fi theatre production, made with the support of SummerDance Forever Amsterdam. Releasing on KC the Funkaholic’s latest jazz imprint, Earthbound’s music delicately travels the spaceways with alternating percussions sessions, Sun-Ra like piano lines, and otherworldly synth sessions.”

Iconic within the Broken Beat jazz movement, IG Culture delves into afro-futurist, nu-jazz territory that helps bridge the gap between inner-city London, the streets of Amsterdam, and distant outer space. Recording under the pseudonym Likwid Continual Space Motion, the UK producer’s debut on Amsterdam’s Paradiso jazz imprint Super Sonic Jazz is the soundtrack to Earthbound, a new science-fiction theatre production, that comes alive with the interstellar sounds of instrumental funk, soul, and space-age jazz.

Produced in cooperation with SummerDance Forever Amsterdam, Earthbound is a journey into intergalactic live jazz fusion, that sees IG Culture team up members from the London artist collective Steam Down, Alex Phountzi of Selectors Assemble (see Bugz In The Attic), and Rhythm Section’s Neue Grafik. The resulting collage is a melange of live sax, alternating percussions sessions, Sun-Ra like piano lines, and otherworldly synth sessions. The EP’s music delicately travels the spaceways, ultimately conveying the messaging behind Earthbound, a story based on the work of author Zecharia Sitchin, in which the ancient people of Nibiru return to Earth to discover the people they had once passed down knowledge to, are now living in a world of chaos.

IG Culture is one of the most important protagonists in catalyst of the UK’s broken beat jazz scene, which he refers to as 'London Bruk Boogie'. Having set up the legendary CoOp night at Plastic People and now the man behind CoOp Presents and Selectors Assemble, IG Culture is no stranger to Super Sonic Jazz, having released an homage to Sun Ra on Kees Heus' first imprint, Kindred Spirits back in 2003. With three decades worth of production nuance, Earthbound is the next challenge in the producer’s legacy, an idea that was spurned on once again by the Paradiso DJ KC the Funkaholic. With the theatre production having already debuted in February, the full soundtrack and LP is set for release in November this year. Keep your earth frequencies open for more information.

KIP CARMEN & DANNY HORTON - TECIHILA / THOUGHTS OF LOVING YOU

Kip Carmen and Danny Horton are seasoned men of music. In the early 70s, Kip was signed to Memphis’ legendary HI Records. He also had releases on independent labels, including Queen Bee, Reveille & AFE (with Danny), plus an LP in 1979 on Long Islands Sounds.
In August 1982 at Normandy Sound Studios, Rhode Island, the cream of New York and Boston session musicians assembled to record songs for an album release. Due to a prolonged recession in the music business and the onset of CDs, the recordings were shelved.
IZIPHO SOUL have captured two masterpieces: TECIHILA, which in Native American means ’I Love You’ in a powerful and spiritual way. It’s a post disco jam with sensuous lyrics - one of those songs where you can ‘picture the scene’. The B Side - THOUGHTS OF LOVING YOU - continues the alluring theme at a slower tempo.
Some releases require more complex licensing work, bravery and belief. I am personally thrilled for Kip and Danny that these unique pieces of music have been rescued, restored and released on vinyl.

LOU WATSON - PLEASE DON’T LEAVE / DAYDREAMING

We are extremely proud to present these unreleased demos by New York Jazz/Soul singer Lou Watson. Recorded in October 1977, at the early stages of his singing career, these compositions were just too good to remain undiscovered!
Produced by Ronald Foster of Ecstasy Passion & Pain fame, Lou blends his sonorous baritone over a guitar, bass, piano and drum backing. We hope you enjoy their rawness and beauty!

Out on 3rd May. Limited to 300 copies.

HXE - INDS

Hxe

INDS

10inchUIQ011
UIQ
24.05.2019

Lee Gamble signs up HXE (fka HEX) for a tightly coiled, hard-edged quartet of deco-rave recces in
the space between sound designer techno, mutant Latinx styles, and polluted megatropolis vapour
noise
Run out 3 years since the London-based duo’s debut with Liberation Technologies, and proceeding
their 2017 EP for Antifur, the ‘INDS’ EP is loosely structured around the practice and aesthetics of
modern, large scale industry. Its 4 tracks are brutalist in resolve and construction, but each derive
a sense of (perhaps perverse) pleasure and sensuality from the warped virtual/physical tension
and crunching industrial intensity of their sounds.
‘Rozay’ opens the A-side with an alarming sort of Industrial dancehall smackdown, all panic-
station strings and pummelling, off-kilter bass with unyielding effect, while the reticulated
writhe of ‘Worm’ synchs breathless synthetic gasps with mechanically reclaimed rhythm with
‘floor-flailing force, and ’Spill’ alternately sustains and vents the tension with lurching, gnashing
dembow dynamics.
Following Zuli’s ‘Terminal’, which ranked highly in the Wire’s AOTY chart, and Nkisi’s resoundingly
acclaimed ‘7 Directions’ album, HXE are a fierce new addition to UIQ’s gang of dancefloor mutants.
In a stark reflection of the music, ’INDS’ will be accompanied by artwork and video in collaboration
with Paris-based sculpture artist Anita Molinero, whose process of salvaging and irreversibly
deforming industrial objects and materials patently mirrors the process and abrasive, malformed
nature of HXE’s music.

John Duncan & Joachim Nordwall - Conventional Wisdom

Venerable avant-garde composer John Duncan follows his prized cycle of cover versions ‘Bitter
Earth’ [2016] with ‘Conventional Wisdom’; a truly beguiling new suite of original, stony avant-blooz
songs produced in collaboration with iDEAL boss Joachim Nordwall, and marking another high
point in both of their catalogues After coming out as a vocalist to memorably striking effect in
2016, Duncan compounds the effect with ‘Conventional Wisdom’, placing his original lyrics in stark
arrangements ranging from shortwave radio-streaked dark ambient settings and Mika Vainio-
esque isolationism, to deathly dubs driven by Nordwall’s rugged rhythms in a style that heavily
recalls Jay Glass Dubs’ recent ‘Epitaph’ LP.
An original and close associate of LAFMS co-founder Tom Recchion, and collaborator with
everyone from Chris & Cosey to Asmus Tietchens, Merzbow and Andrew Mckenzie (The Hafler
Trio), Duncan is well versed in the art of f*cking with music. Doing so since the ‘70s, it’s only in
recent years that more “typical” song structures have crept into his style with most transfixing
effect, gathering the attention of many who previously weren’t necessarily exposed to his music.
Whether stemming from a perverse pleasure in twisting popular music, or a matter of changing
with age (dude is 65), we’re just not sure, but either way Duncan is now coming out with some of
the most broadly appealing, yet incomparable work in his 50 year-wide catalogue.
Aided by Joachim Nordwall, the pair convene a set of songs every bit as fascinating, eerie as
the cover image of a birdcage mask bound in barbed wire. The title track emphasises the stark
mystery with nothing more than meditative vocals, gamelan strikes and daubs of shortwave,
before ‘Hard Swallow’ catches him huskily channelling Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry at a spooky distance,
while the disembodied dub tropes of ’Soft Eyes’ come uncannily close to aspects of Jay Glass Dubs,
and ‘Say No’ says it in the bluntest, most bluesy terms. The most desiccated, strung-out material
however is saved for the B-side, with the sferic resonance and stereo-strafing vocal of ‘The Joke’
planing out into the cracked hush of ‘The Beautiful Attempt’, before he and Nordwall effectively
duet in the finale ‘The Red Hot Alternative’, where Nordwall also supplies pranging percussion and
Coil-esque synth abstraction.

Various - Relative Persuasions

Our 8th VA compilation, spinning a web around fresh and old bloods alike.

A1 introduces Arp220, with the tripping Meur Maei. Disembodied vocals bouncing over acid drips, scorching.

A2 sees Obergman stop the clock with trademark tight productions on the tuff n sucking Chronostasis.
On the flip, the long-elusive collaboration between XY0815 and Int Main Rigid Body sees a proper release after an ultra limited run at last year’s Rye Wax’s Run Out.

The Jaffa Kid re-emerges after his Beauté Du Négatif EP with Intergalactic War Trials, weaving thick but never cloying synth work over a stepping wicked rhythm, making it all happen & dripping for the 'floor’.

Finally, newcomer Oskar Telemann sees off the EP with a crafty marriage of IDM and synthwave on Anruf Aus Dem Westen. Chilling.

5 cuts, 5 styles, everything you need to slick the floors with out of date smoke fluid.
