Inevitably a new approach to creating music has developed into a new identity: seeping with textures, loaded with a taut energy that whispers tales of shamanism and transformative life experiences.
Stripping back an already unique creative process proved a challenge that has paid off, and Blackburn's evolving sound has no immediate sonic comparison. With distinct resonances of his musical heritage flowing through a more mature filter, there is a mystical atmosphere that resounds through the LP as you hear Ancestral Voicesemerge triumphantly into the world.

ISON is the debut album of Iranian-born Dutch artist Sevdaliza. After releasing her latest Edison nominated visual masterpiece HUMAN, and her acclaimed short film The Formula', next to worldly known
3D experiences for That Other Girl' and Marilyn Monroe', Sevdaliza is defining art with her mystical audio-visual experiences.

So far Sevdaliza already amassed millions of plays on Youtube and Spotify. She recently collaborated with A$AP Ferg and was also featured on Parisian producer STWO's latest single Haunted'.

As much as ISON is about the human experience, it is mostly about Sevdaliza returning to her spirit guided by past lives. By following her intuition, her unconscious guided her on a path which one present form might never reproduce. All the knowledge that is not of the senses, not of the intellect, not of the heart but is the property that belongs to the deepest aspect of your being.' ISON is an experience of that being.

Sevdaliza's melancholic visceral voice floats over beds of thumping trip hop dubs, married with classical harmonies and cutting strings setting an enigma. Rhythmic tensions build slowly into chaotic climaxes. ISON has been described as genre- bending', drawing on various genres.

Her writing, influenced by intuition and experiences in past lives, has a philosophical questioning character, subjects like spirit diversification and perception of emotion are strongly present. Divine energies blend harmonically within. Sevdaliza plays with the simulation of lives that can hardly be distinguished from truth. Creating a reality where everything is possible. To Sevdaliza, expression comes forward in designing every detail in sound and imagery.

Blinding first volley of ambient grime feels by Belgium's Sky H1, crystallising one of 2016's most striking entries with a debut for Pan X Codes.
If you've had an ear to PAN's recent NTS shows or frequent the likes of Berlin's Creamcake or London's Bala Club, it's possible that you've at least seen her name, if not been wowed by Air - a
pensile, elegiac wonder rent in noctilucent chorals and arcing Autechrian pads - which heads and opens up the emotional floodgates of Sky H1's debut EP.
Drawing from a background of widely-varying musical tastes from Ambient to Grime, her own work is an amalgamation of emotive compositions of orchestral Elysian synths, often displaced
with sparse percussive elements.
'Motion' is a highly personal endeavour, constructed from the results of a turbulent time - she describes it as 'a flash of her emotional state over the last few months'. 'It signifies leaving behind a period in my life and stepping into something new.' She explains.
Moving through bleak soundscapes layering vaporous choral synths, ethereal vocals and glassy,
lucid tones crafted in complex structures, the record bears moments of melancholy as well as joy on tracks like 'Tell Me' and 'I Think I Am'. Where many other producers are currently playing out hyper-violent beat-em-up scenarios, Motion indulges a plangent lushness to aching affect; oscillating nervous percussion and agonised choral cadence with glassy soft and weightless chimes and R&B variants blessed with an ambient aura.
It's all inarguably up there with the best, most addictive new music we've heard in 2016, and hugely recommended if you know what's good.

Lullabies For Insomniacs is pleased to present Yasuo Sugibayashi and The Mask Of The Imperial Family, a compilation of music from Mimic Records 1980-1982.

Yasuo began his musical career playing guitar in a high school band, in 1980 after moving to Tokyo and immersing himself in various musical groups he founded Mimic Records. Inspired heavily by the art movements of the late 1970's, in particular the innovations of Brian Eno and David Cunningham he purchased a Roland System 100M. He was in search of a sound and the synthesizer had great potential. Simultaneously he had started experimenting with tape, playing with the tactility of the medium so he could understand how to best adapt it for his pieces.

Yasuo explored ancient ethnic music and wanted to combine his influences with daily experiences of city life. The short lived Mimic records was home to three of his solo releases, a self titled LP and two 7 inches, shortly after this period Yasuo went on to pursue other musical projects, in 1985 he was a founding member of the band Qujila which is still active today.

"Both profound and profoundly jaw dropping, the esoteric moves of this massively rare and insanely obscure 300 copy Japanese marvel have until now remained the sole preserve of a handful of heavyweight collectors. It's time to let the cat out of the bag on this one. The dankly cavernous and unsettling acid maneuvers of Dome circa their first three LP's (though absent vocals) are the nearest antecedent I can summon for the principal thrust of the sound here. So too, there's a ritualistic dimension to this stuff thats also a bit suggestive of something like Vasilisk or The Hybryds, though the arcane initiatory atmosphere here is far more penetrating than anything I've heard either of those two muster." - Mutant Sounds

Agan - Amplification Of Movements

A concept album is the best way to get back to being Agan. "Amplification Of Movements" (2017) is the first full-length album of Giuseppe Carlini, already a member of Plaster with Gianclaudio H. Moniri (Kaeba). A work inspired by and dedicated to the Natural Reserve of Vico Lake, in Italy. During a four-year period, from 2012 to 2016, the artist focused on the wildlife of the area in the province of Viterbo, considering it both as an inspiring muse and an object of study. "Amplification Of Movements" was developed little by little, in the wake of an "onion" architecture and layered in six songs which inevitably reference the nature of the site. The parallels between the place and the music are also to be found in search of a sound, which is balanced between field recordings and self production.

Mei Zhiyong had been instrumental in arranging dp's tour of China. When Mei Zhiyong
and Dave Phillips first met in Beijing in July 2014, Mei spoke not a word of English and dp
not a word of Chinese. And they we were to embark on an 18 city tour together. Verbal
communication between Mei and dp was obviously difficult to say the least. It would
often result in comical misunderstandings, total puzzlement or bewilderment, but it
would also be a source of constant amusement with wonderful moments of instinctive
trust. But then there is sound, the ultimate language...
To return the favor, dp arranged a tour for Mei and himself in October 2015 through 20
European cities. Which is where the source material was recorded. dp then selected,
dissected and transformed those recordings to work out something different, not just a
collaboration, not just an amalgam of two styles, but something new for both. The
compositions on this LP are the result.

From Scratch/goat/don't Dj/utena Kobayashi Group - 8 9 10 & 9 10 11 From Gung Ho 1 2 3d

From Scratch was an innovative and highly influential New Zealand- based sound-performance group, making extensive use of found and re-purposed objects as well as custom-made instruments in their intricately interlocking percussion music. One of their signature instruments consisted of carefully tuned PVC pipes, played with foam rubber mallets, arrays of these feature prominently, along with drums and tuned percussion, in Gung Ho 1,2,3D, an extended composition which sumptuously investigates polyrhythmic relationships indicated by the number sequences which title each section of the piece. Featured here is the original 1982 recording of the "8, 9, 10" and "9, 10, 11" sections of the piece, previously issued in 1988 by Flying Nun. Rounding out this 2LP and CD release are three 2016 translations of the piece, based on the original score. Japanese group goat provides a driving rhythmic and mathematical analogue, which From Scratch's Phil Dadson, who provides liner notes, describes as "a fast moving shadow, familiar in outline but from another world". German producer Don't DJ imbibes the tribal spirit of Gung Ho and its sense of ritual to deliver a hypnotic immersion, and Utena Kobayashi Group adds wordless voice-worlds and distorted blasts to the ever-onward mix, before a final tropical down-shift.

Ultra-rare D.I.Y minimal / synth-pop / industrial / darkwave album from 1986!

Kozmonaut was the personal project of a young & talented Canadian musician called Michael Gutierrez, who moved to San Francisco in the early 80s. Influenced by Kraftwerk and German culture / electronic music, Michael recorded the Flieg' album all by himself at his garage studio, using the pseudonym of Hans Schiller'.

1000 copies were pressed on his own label, Vier Productions Inc, but they were never distributed or sold at the time, with virtually the entire pressing being discarded, as Michael, a perfectionist, was not satisfied with the spelling mistakes on the cover, among other things. In 1989, Michael, along with Pieter Ziegelmeier, formed the famous industrial / electronic band Kode IV.

Sadly, Michael contracted AIDS and passed away in 1994. All the contents of his garage (tapes, albums, synths and recording equipment) were sold for cheap or ended up in the street.

Fast forward to 2010: An adventurous record hunter (Christian Peintner) finds a copy of the Flieg' album at a thrift shop in San Francisco. At first, he thinks it's a German album but after some investigation, he discovers the name of Michael Gutierrez which leads him to Kode IV and then to Peter Ziegelmeier. He visits Peter who tells him the real story of Michael Gutierrez aka Hans Schiller and Kozmonaut.

Flieg' is an excellent album, a crossover of a wide range of styles from early Industrial (paving the way for Michael's later sounds with Kode IV), to Synth-Pop, Experimental Electronics, ambient and Dark Wave. Michael uses the vocoder very effectively and in one of the songs, Tidal Meditation', he recorded the Golden Gate Bridge fog horn to use it as a sample.

* After a brief hiatus, Cold Recordings returns to form with a new release from label-boss Pinch, blurring the boundaries between dance floor sensibilities and experimental spaces. Both sides play at 128bpm making them versatile tracks to play out.

Emerging through storm-like waves of distortion, opener 'Alpha' sets the scene for this beguiling cassette release, with melodies rising out of — and then descending back into — the chaos. '3000 Years' takes vocal samples as a starting point, before melting into layer upon layer of delay, after which 'Confounded' picks up the pace with its heavily distorted beats and the side then closes to the sound of a distant choir burning in acidic ambience in the shape of 'Fruitless Clicking'.
The nightmarish, malfunctioning machinery vibes continue onto the second side, with the more dance oor-friendly 'Strange Conversations' and 'The Brink' bookended by the two-part ambient epic 'Pale Blue Dot'. Dark, glitchy, and at times outright uncomfortable — perfectly suited to the cassette format.

Collection of recordings by the Italian sound and concrete poet Arrigo Lora-Totino (1928-2016). His place in the history and development of poetical intermedia is undisputed.

This LP holds fourteen voice-based tape works made from the years 1968 to 2000. While there is some use of cut-up tape manipulation, the artistry truly lies in his performance of the sound plays. Multi-tracking is utilized and Arrigo's nebulous voice paintings splat and click and glide. His bold expression is inspiring to me: it leads by example in encouraging the pulling of oneself further into their art.

I was staying at a hotel in San Francisco when I awoke in a sunfilled room to an email from Giovanni Fontana telling me that Arrigo had passed away. I was saddened by the departure of such a creative man, yet proud to be working with and perpetuating his legacy.

Scarce edition of 310 LPs on black wax/white poly-lined sleeves. Incl. 16-page pamphlet with score excerpts, artwork, & program notes written by Totino, and an essay written by Giovanni Fontana

Danny Scrilla - Ancient Musical Box

Danny Scrilla returns to Cosmic Bridge Records with a full-length project inspired by a desire to experiment outside of club conventions. While Cosmic Bridge has become known for forward-thinking, dubwise dancefloor mutations, label founder Om Unit has long been a fan of ambient and synthesizer music and Ancient Musical Box offers a current take on the format, with 16 tracks of lush electronic compositions and meditations. Fittingly, Ancient Musical Box also marks the label's first cassette release.

Ancient Musical Box was written over the past year as a direct reaction to Danny's frustration with club music and the inevitable cynicism that can sometimes arise from prolonged contact with scenes, styles, and genres. I wanted to create something without any ulterior motives,' he explains. As the tracks accumulated, the project took on a personal dimension and therapeutic qualities. Intent on not over-thinking or polishing his ideas, Danny created something that is less album and more a collection of emotions in their rawest form.'

Despite not being intended for the dancefloor, the music on Ancient Musical Box still bears clear relations to Danny's catalogue in its minimalist approach and use of melodic motifs. You can hear it in the hazy crescendo of 'Night Sweats', the wobbly funk of 'Pangalactic Gargleblaster', and the gentle keys of 'Talisman'. Alongside these are more experimental moments, seemingly fragile in their simplicity but hiding a depth that reveals itself in context: the delicate loops of the title track, the vibrations of 'Cryopod', the melancholy progressions of 'Too Little Too Late'.

Ancient Musical Box is the sound of a producer remembering that the best ideas are the simplest, in the process pointing to new directions.

Fred Helliwell - Industrial Folklore Tapes Volume Two: Springs

This second edition in the new Industrial Folklore series from Folklore Tapes is a sub-series exploring the hidden industries and workshops of clog makers, saddlers, quarrymen, dry-stone wallers, cotton mills and spring makers.
This record commemorates the veiled labour and voice of the spring. The first side reveals the workshop of B.P.S Springs, featuring the men and the machines that have inhabited the space for thirty eight years. The second side is a soundscape of tones from over ninety collected helical springs, handmade at B.P.S workshop and mounted in a circular arrangement atop a piece of wood, amplified and either plucked or oscillated with a motor.
Simple non-coiled springs were used throughout human history, e.g. the bow (and arrow), even the bend in a tree branch. In the Bronze Age more sophisticated spring devices were used, as shown by the spread of tweezers in many cultures. Coiled springs appeared in door locks early in the fifteenth century. The first spring powered clocks also appeared in the fifteenth century and evolved into the first large watches by the sixteenth century. In the eighteenth century, the Industrial Revolution spurred the development of mass production techniques for making springs. In popular culture both the slinky and the magic roundabout gave the spring an exciting dimension for children and adults alike. Spring reverbs have been used in music from the mid-twentieth century and who doesn't recall the sound of a bed spring popping right by your ear in the dead of night
B.P.S Springs Ltd. in Rochdale, Lancashire have been making every type of spring (torsion, compression, coiled, extension, flat) for cars, beds, boats, pegs, pens, lamps, trampolines, staplers, computer keys and more for the past thirty eight years. Named after and run by three friends, Bud, Pete and Sam, B.P.S will close for business, fittingly at the end of spring 2017. Fred Helliwell stumbled upon the workshop by accident and was struck by the everyday significance of the place and between the voice of the spring and the voice of the people who make them. After speaking with the spring makers and discovering their imminent retirement it seemed fitting to create oral and photographic documentation as a lasting commemoration to the hidden hands that have been at the helm of Rochdale's industry since the decline of textile production in the area.
The first side of the ten inch record captures the atmosphere of a day in the life of the spring workshop, with lathe cutters, croppers, grinders and the telephone ringing amongst spoken accounts from Lancashire spring makers Bud, Pete and Sam. The second side features a hand-built sculpture clock (symbolising the clock of labour) and utilises many of the springs collected from B.P.S, played percussively and plucked with oscillations produced by a motor, echoing the rhythms of the machines in the workshop. The 'spring clock' is played in clockwise rotation in an improvised soundscape, with the steel vibrations often producing incidental atonal harmonies that resonate and shimmer. Each spring has its own identity, its own unique signature of sound.
Part documentary and part sound meditation, 'Springs' acknowledges the hidden labour of B.P.S Springs and explores the vast tonal range of the common metal spring, elevating the significance of an everyday object used so much, yet often taken for granted.
'Springs' is a limited edition ten inch record bound within a gatefold sleeve with a hand stitched booklet containing dozens of black and white photographs of the inside of the workshop, along with notes and drawings by Fred Helliwell. A pressed spring is included with each of the 250 hand numbered editions of the record.

Folklore is most often associated with the romance of rural life, but this new series of releases explores 'industrial folklore', born from the hardship and daily toil of workers in mills, mines and foundries in the north of England. The Industrial Folklore series sets out to explore a recent past, embedded in family histories and still in living memory, yet for the most part a forgotten bygone era, that appears to have little connection to our present existence.
It is no coincidence that the artists who begin this series are all based in and around Lancashire, the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, a landscape silently haunted by the tangible remains of once thriving noisy industries.
Instruments of Industry is a translation of a residency and exhibition by Hannah Leighton-Boyce from 2016. The project approaches the tool as an extension of ourselves, our contact, relationship to and being in the world. It draws on the connection between Touchstones Museum's collection of trade tools and their resting place, Thomas Robinson and Son's, a former engineering works which now houses the archive.
These prehensile tools have been elevated to museum objects and represent our pre-industrial relationship to work. Disembodied from the hands and minds that worked them, they are no longer 'present at hand' and remain at a distance, carefully preserved as an object of esthetic and historic value.
The tools on the shelves hold a latent memory of an action, the resonating sounds created in the moulding, measuring, bending and shaping of process and a material. Using sounds captured from 'ringing' the tools, the work was composed as a series of movements and explores resonance as a way of touching and conversing. From the working hand to the disembodied, from the real to the imagined, to the coming present.
This first release through Industrial Folklore Tapes features the original exhibition recording of a fifteen minute composition using 'ringing' tools' on side A and a side B features each tool spoken and then played in turn.

Henry Andersen - Stanzas Or The Law Of The Good Neighbour

Stanzas... seems to be a precise text-sound composition, a liquid and elegant piece of concrete poetry that reveals the individual qualities of the voices and their interpersonal relation.

Henry Andersen is a Brussels-based visual artist and composer. Trained as a minimal and reductionist composer under the wings of Peter Ablinger, he moved from music into visual art, writing and sound performances.

But what sounds like a hardcore conceptual and idealist composition has a lot more to it. Being an heir to a playful and prosaic Cagean and Ashleyan tradition, the list of words is a score that acts as a field for an infinite amount of possibilities.

Andersen documents some of these many possible outcomes, expressing an urge to be a human body in space, interrelated with others. The composer reveals on the record another face of conceptualism: as a material, personal and truly moving beauty.

First-time available on vinyl (pressed as a limited CD in 1998), Evangeline finds Connors working in a narrative structure. This album trails the story of Evangeline, the heroine of an epic-poem written in 1847. Loren's guitar tone follows the weary landscapes and mournful souls of the characters.

Thematically Evangeline falls in line with the other romantic Connors LPs Recital as published, Airs and Lullaby, though with a defining arc in direction. Parallel guitar preludes begin this collection, leading to distant ballads in spheres of reverb. Suzanne Langille softly singing on the first track sets this album as a child's fable. As longing clouded in dreams of loss and devotion.

Includes restored audio & new artwork by Loren Connors. Includes an 8.5'x11' insert: a story written by Suzanne Langille based on the epic poem, Evangeline.

If there's a single guiding motif to this debut recording from Love Theme, it's the melancholic throb of love learnt and love lost, a descent that tumbles and slips through the overall feeling of looking back. As intimately and carefully as its parts cohesively lament a narrative, it's the after-image that catches your breath, like a memory morphing as it is observed.

Comprised of Alex Zhang Hungtai of the now defunct project Dirty Beaches, along with Austin Milne, and Simon Frank, 'Love Theme' is arranged from an improvised session with twin saxophones, synthesizer, percussion, drum machine, and voice. Over the course of a year the material was edited remotely from the members' home cities of London, LA and Taipei.

The record's sullen ambience is never left too long to set in. The aching wane of the saxophone arrangements frisk the propulsive aggro of the mixed percussion, forcing a melancholic halo upon the queasy stupor of the synthetic swing that closes each side of the record. It's a bizarre lust for life that's being divined from equal parts dislocation and invigoration, a potent remedy which perhaps Love Theme can call their own.

Percolating and finding form over time, the record instinctively follows a travel narrative, moving across a series of landscapes, reflecting the innate experiences of the expressions and voices that were first collected in South London back in February 2015.

Challenging electronic album from 1986 by Maggi Payne.

Maggi Payne is an American composer, flutist video artist and co-director of the Center for Contemporary Music, Mills College where she teaches recording engineering, composition, and electronic music. Her work involves electroacoustic, instrumental, and vocal works along with works involving visuals, including dancers outfitted with electroluminescent wire and videos she creates using images ranging from nature to the abstract. She has composed music for dance, theatre, and video.

Crystal was first released in 1986 on the Lovely Music label. Home to experimental musicians such as Robert Ashley, David Behrman, Pauline Oliveros and Alvin Lucier. On Crystal flute, spoken voice, sonifications and synthesizers are processed to create dense and massive structures. Maggi Payne's musical imagination is vivid: she is interested in the surreal, the inward, the micro, and the accumulation of physical and psychological tension. Periods of silence gently evolve into flowing drones of complex resonances. Oozing drones evolve into dense and powerful peaks of short duration. The compositions and sounds on Crystal have incredible depth, a profound logic and, though not "pretty", an irresistible beauty.

"I create immersive environments, inviting listeners/participants to enter the sound and be carried with it, experiencing it from the inside out in intimate detail. The sounds are almost tactile, visible, tangible. A narrative of the imagination exists, allowing each person experiencing the work to thread their own paths through their mind's imagination and their body's physical engagement. Each sound slowly unfolds, revealing intricacies and complexity. Each grows and evolves like crystals forming under the microscope.

When creating sounds I visualize/auralize trajectories. I visualize the sound as originating from, for instance, a point source below where one is standing, then it swirls outward and upward in an ever-expanding spiral until it disappears high over the listener's head, morphing as it travels. Spatialization is not imposed when mixing, but is instead created in the original recording by increasing the amplitude of the sound on one track then decreasing its amplitude as the identical frequency is matched on the next track while it is increasing its amplitude, dovetailing the tracks across the space. Using extensive multi-tracking, the spatialization is retained, architecting and sculpting the aural space so that multiple perspectives and trajectories coexist."

Housewives track Exc. 281016 perfectly captures the mechanical repetition of their live sound with austere precision and jarring No Wave stutters, their regimented chaos is punctuated with throat shredding manipulated vocals brining to mind James Chance or the harsh repetition of Swans.

Massicot's Kokteilis shows off their ease at genre hopping between their recognisable Tropical No Wave and uncharacteristic hip hop beats whilst showcasing their perfect marriage of pop and noise. Monotone vocals merge with saccharine chants whilst sharp riffs mesh with oscillating percussion to create a perfect bewildering dance track.

This release has gained the support of five labels as collaboration between Blank Editions / Hands In The Dark / Red Wig / Et Mon Cul C'est Du Tofu And Harbinger Sound.

Riccardo Sinigaglia, with Gabin Dabiré and Walter Maioli, made up one third of Futuro Antico - one of the most important collaborations to emerge from the 1970's and 80's Italian avant-garde. The project, whose name literally translates to ancient future, joined traditional sounds and instrumental from around world, with electronic music - the sonic past, present, and future as one. Recorded shortly after the collective's most prolific period and released in 1986, while more singular and more idiosyncratic, Sinigaglia's Riflessi caries these very concerns at its core. Built from field recording, collaged samples, synthesis, and instrumentation - shifting from hypnotic rhythm to radical and displacing structures, it establishes a remarkable link between ancient and non-western musics and efforts emerging from studios like Groupe de Recherches Musicales. A work of staggering rhythm, texture, beauty, Riflessi builds a world with almost no parallel - imbuing electronic music with touch, tactility, and humanity, while sacrificing none its challenges and intellectual heights. Rattling sonorous wonder, emerging for the first time on any format since its original pressing, before us is a historic moment - a lost piece of the puzzle of the wondrous Italian avant-garde.

Rich La Bonte - Mayan Canals

Rich La Bonte is a musician, writer and editor from upstate New York born in 1946. At age 11 he figured out how to record a piano backwards with his first tape deck and discovered Monk, Mingus and Art Blakey. In 1965 Rich moved to Ithaca, bought an electric guitar and started singing in garage rock band the huns. After the band dissolved, he moved to NYC and played bass and sang in the original cast production of the musical Godspell. In the late 70s La Bonte moved to Hollywood with Shari Famous, released a a few 7' singles as Dada2, and started fLAtDiSk Records, a vinyl subsidiary of Dave Gibson's Moxie Record Company.

Rich released his debut solo album 'Mayan Canals' in 1981. The seven songs were recorded between 1973 and 1980 while living in New York, Pennsylvania and Hollywood. Influenced by everything from Apple Records to Zappa, the album veers from oozy psychedelia to synthesized breezy folk. Vocally Rich sounds like a cross between Tom Verlaine and Lou Reed. Some tracks feature an EMS Synthi A synthesizer, known to generate the sci-fi sounds from Dr. Who. Other songs utilize feedback from a Maestro Fuzztone box into a TEAC 4-track SimulSync tape recorder. Lyrically La Bonte tackles themes of dying celestial bodies, the birth of his daughter, and a critique of Bowie's character in The Man Who Fell To Earth. Included on this reissue are two bonus tracks originally released on the double A side 7' single Chance Circumstance/Drums Along The Maple Wood, a tribute to Irwin Chusid, the eminent WFMU DJ, with vocals by Shari Famous.

All songs have been remastered from original tapes by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket features a replica of the original jacket with a Mayan figure screen printed using the original rubber stamps from Rich's archives. Each copy includes a 6-page xeroxed booklet with lyrics, never before seen photos, and liner notes by Rich La Bonte.

"The Loa of Music" is the debut recording project of Milanese composer and musician Roberto Musci inspired by Voodoo Religion, Vever (the magical voodoo paintings) and Loas, the dark and magic spirits. The deep charm of non-Western music has led him to travel for many years across Africa, India and Asia, studying rhythms, scales, performance and interpretation of the most varied traditional and indigenous music, as well he make many field recordings and collected ethnic instruments that would then be combined with synthesizers and electronics in The Loa of Music.

Recorded in 1983, the project originally had 80 minutes of music but only half was released on original LP. SOAVE has pressed for the first time the Complete Recording Session from original tapes of this phenomenally ambitious masterpiece that entirely refuses the well trod path - distilling a remarkable range of sonic reference and reality. A work of field recording, musique concrète, electronics, synthesis, and instrumentation, pulling from countless musics from across the globe, the result is nothing short of brilliant and stunningly beautiful. A near perfect work - an egoless gesture, which rather than attempting to find consensus, offers every voice equity and cohabitation - harnessing the history music, with all of its cultural diversity, as a vision for a more ideal future. Geographies and their sounds intertwine, while Musci's interventions and instrumentation thread a path. Ambiences ripple, sounds and voices converse in a vision of unity that may only exist within sonic realms. Unquestionably seminal, and one of the most important works to emerge from Italy in the last 50 years. Never before issued on vinyl since it's original release, and surely not to be around for long, this is one not to miss.

Roy Montgomery - M: Darkmotif Dancehall

It's been over a decade since Roy Montgomery's last album, and R M H Q is a hell of a return.

M: Darkmotif Dancehall is the most experimental of the four albums. Montgomery explores new guitar tones and song construction, allowing thick distorted murk and overdriven sharpness to guide the melodies' paths. It's a playful montage of differing masks with discovered sounds laying the groundwork for each track to develop a mind of its own. Six Guitar Salute For Peter Gutteridge,' is a standout upbeat number providing a personalized roadmap to the beyond, honoring the innovative original member of The Clean who could cook up melodies from the most bizarre ingredients, and who passed away last year.

Montgomery was in his rock band period in the eighties, when the dark, minimalist post-punk of The Pin Group lead into the gloriously open-ended freedoms of Dadamah. After a quiet spell, he returned in the late nineties, producing towering spires of guitar lines that exposed fragility between the strums. With his solo releases and in collaboration with Flying Saucer Attack, Bardo Pond (Hash Jar Tempo), and Chris Heaphy (Dissolve), his focus shifted from the truth-mining of rock music to epic celestialism. His ambitious yet humble tracks outstrip their origins, and Montgomery toured the world sitting crosslegged on the floor, playing twenty-plus-minute compositions.

A long period of silence followed, marked only with a split album with Grouper (who lists Montgomery as a primary influence), involvement in Torlesse Super Group, and a couple thematic variations serving as soundtracks for films. Instead, he focused on his personal and professional commitments. Unfortunately, two horrific events precededhis return: the Christchurch earthquakes of 2011 condemned Montgomery's entire neighborhood save for his home, stripping his street of a community, and, as a volunteer firefighter, he saw first-hand the destruction and loss of life in the city center. Additionally, since 2014, illness in the family has dominated his life. Self-expression once again demanded an outlet. R M H Q is four albums conceived and recorded over a very short period, each of them carrying a distinct focus and mood.

Tony Conrad - Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain

Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain is the quintessential work of artist/filmmaker/composer Tony Conrad. Comprised of both film installation and minimalist score for amplified strings, Ten Years leaps across genre and medium to connect his revolutionary structural filmmaking with the experiments in long-duration sound that Conrad had begun in the 1960s as part of the Theatre of Eternal Music.

"Ten Years began with image before sound," writes Andrew Lampert, "a row of quadruple projections arranged side-by-side, all the shuffling stripes cascading into each other. Over the next two hours the music throbbed and the projectors incrementally shifted inwards, their beams gradually uniting to form one pulsating, overlapping picture."

For its 1972 premiere at New York's The Kitchen, Ten Years included Conrad on violin as well as Rhys Chatham and Laurie Spiegel performing on instruments of the composer's own making. Chatham played the Long String Drone - a 6-foot long strip of wood with bass strings, electric pickup, tuning keys, tape, rubber band and metal hardware - while Spiegel carried out an arrhythmic bass pulse throughout.

Superior Viaduct is honored to present this previously unreleased recording of Ten Years Alive On The Infinite Plain's breathtaking premier performance. As Chatham recounts in the liner notes, "When I first listened to this recording after not hearing it for over 40 years, it transported me back to the early Kitchen and the heyday of early minimalism, played outside the Dream Syndicate."

This Series of electro acoustic music and Musique Concrète has started in 2015 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Experimental Studio Bratislava, Exs. Series 1 introduced us to Ina Hudba/Other Music from the first generation of Slovak avant-garde composers recorded in the Exs, mostly with self-built electronic equipment behind the Iron Curtain. Series 2 provided a platform for Nova Generacia/New Generation of Slovak composers using Western equipment - now integrated in the 5 years plan' to purchase in the West...- and influenced by Karlheinz Stockhausen, György Ligeti, Pietro Grossi among others.

Series 3 called Nasi Hostia/Our Guests show casts the recordings at the Exs of foreign visiting composers like György Ligeti, Lothar Voigtländer, Liviu Dandara etc. The backbone to these unusual landmark recordings were the highly esteemed Annual International Seminars on New Music in Smolenice, Slovakia. The first Seminar held in 1968 was opened and attended by Karlheinz Stockhausen - playing his Hymnen' for the first time abroad - for the Slovak composers an ear opener and a learning process on how to make' this kind of music'... In the following years New Music personalities like Ligeti, Mauricio Kagel, Lutoslawski, Gorecki, Sofia Gubajdulina etc. attended the Smolenice Seminars. - Unfortunately the partial opening of the Iron Curtain and the general cultural upsurge of the 1960's were frozen by tanks in 1968. Neo-stalinistic normalization' of the early 1970s violently pushed this - and not only this - creative branch beyond the borders of permitted cultural activities.
We are especially proud to offer you on this issue a World Premier: Poème Symphonique for 100 Metronomes by György Ligeti, performed and recorded in Smolenice Seminars, 1969 - approved by the composer!

Of particular interest is a student of Stockhausen and Ligeti: Liviu Dandara, Romanian, with his outstanding electro acoustic composition Affectus Memoria' that shows his artistic development after his studies in Darmstadt. The famous East German composer Lothar Voigtländer is presented here with his never released Meditation Sur Le Temps', the almost forgotten Czech composer has here his comeback' with the extraordinary Speleofonie' - just to name a few East European composers to discover from the analogue past of the 70's.

St. Petersburg pathfinder Vladimir Karpov coaxes hushed auras of keys, metronomes, fog, and feeling to evoke hazed and isolated realms, traced in altered states. His latest collection - and vinyl debut - maps the maze at the bottom of self,' subterranean consciousness manifested from decaying synthesizer and shadowed pulse: music for fading torchlight. Labyrinth leads through six misty, mystic chambers of dreams, drones, delirium, and phasered percussion, spiraling in slow, sacred arcs, in quest of the inner world.' Tosya Chaikina's ghost vocals on False Angel Lullaby' and Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors' bring a whispered hymnal mood but otherwise the LP is ambient and abandoned, obscure meditations along corridors of candlelit runes, to find the right path, to find the true answer.'

Destruction Time Again... at one point Caspar Brotzmann (Massaker) and T.Raumschmiere (Monstertruckdriver) had to meet. They did and liked it. After a number of selected concerts the Berlin twins of destruction created a number of tracks in the studio. This EP is a music document of pure beauty. Because behind this wall of sound of tones lies a romantic projection of art. Every listener that is willing to dig a bit deeper can explore pure music. Built out of dreams of music, movements of layers or shifts of patterns that has been melted and grown at the same time. All three tracks are amazingly touching. Blood, sweat and tears. On Shitkatapult's 2017 issue of their annual very special release (10" vinyl only) for the infamous Record Store Day the record C.Brotzmann / T.Raumschmiere fits, especially, as an outstanding piece in the label's 20th anniversary year. Drama may pass, music still digs.
