Barnett + Coloccia - VLF

Barnett+Coloccia

VLF

12inchSIGE060LP
Sige Records
12.04.2019

Alex Barnett (Champagne Mirrors, Oakeater, SCRAPES Recordings) and Faith Coloccia (Mamiffer, Mára) developed a friendship based on a fascination with the world just outside the limit of our understanding - the world where magic and mystery hold equal footing with science. On their third collaborative album VLF, the duo draft a soundtrack to the mapping of the unknown realms in both their private lives and the communal world around them. It’s a premise embedded in the album title, an acronym for Very Low Frequencies which help capture the oscillations of dark matter, as well as a misspelled nod to the VLA radar banks in New Mexico which serve to chart out the cosmos. This fixation on scientific pragmatism finds a creative parallel in the duo’s left-brain explorations of early electronic music, although the bigger influence in Barnett & Coloccia comes from the gaps in our understanding, where instinct drives our behavior and unseen forces impose their will on our surroundings, where certain frequencies inexplicably yield an emotional resonance and, conversely, subconscious impulse finds an analog in sonic patterns. These right-brain tendencies may conjure the minimalist mantras of 20th century classical music at one turn and the expressionist disorder of textural sound design at the next.

“We are both interested in getting ideas and thoughts, however intangible, into notations, or 'thought maps’,” Coloccia says of their process. “Like tarot cards there's geomancy, tea leaves, Italian oil water reading, I-ching Yarrow sticks - all supposedly based on chaos or chance and the energy of the mind shaping events of fallen twigs or sand, and then the interpretation of the reader. For us, we were really interested in tapes or sounds ‘coming to us’ and then interpreting them into different compositions for an audience.” The biggest treasure trove of found sounds for VLF came from a box of cassettes of old religious services for a regional cult. Gifted to the duo by a friend who had been raised in the faith, these documents of rituals, sermons, and glossolalia exercises tied into their fascination with divinations. Recorded over three days at a converted church called The Unknown in Anacortes, WA by Nicholas Wilbur with production assistance by Randall Dunn (Sunn O))), Johann Johansson), the songs on VLF began not with conventional song fragments or arrangement ideas, but with casual conversations regarding the curiosities of the natural world and the human psyche.

On songs like album opener “Fountain of Youth”, the shared fixations are less rooted in tangible phenomena and more tied to the abstract mania of individuals, with the duo summoning humanity's ever-accelerating attempts at escaping “the inevitable wear and proof of time” out of the track’s breathy vocals, scratching percussion, and clock-tower electric piano. The conceptual impetus is more evident on songs like “Confession”, which Barnett traces back to a conversation about the entanglement theory of synchronized heartbeats occurring between therapists and patients. With snippets of a found recording of a therapy session spliced between surges of static and steady bass pulses, the song may seem like it contains the most direct connection between sound sources and inspiration, until Coloccia mentions how entanglement occurs between mother and infant, how this enmeshment must eventually yield to individuation, and how her pregnancy during the VLF creative process was a constant guiding component. “The project is a true collaboration in the sense that the songs never end up as one person's vision,” Barnett says. “They end up somewhere new where the whole is a strange extension beyond the sum of the parts.”

Side 1 ends with “Bachelor's Grove”, which Barnett named after a haunted cemetery he used to explore with his friends. Guided by Coloccia’s ominous piano arpeggio, the song is a meditation on both the idea of death as the end of time and the idea of weak forces - vestiges of human presence imprinted on our world in scientifically unresolvable ways. With an impending birth looming over the VLF session, the counterpoint of death was an inevitable and inescapable theme for the album. “This was a parallel thought pattern we were having,” Coloccia explains. “Ultrasound uses sound frequencies bouncing off the uterine contents to ‘show’ you the baby. Much like the VLA - it was an attempt to communicate with space. There’s a parallel between outer space - the light we see that’s millions of years old in the form of stars - and the baby within the dark womb, a totally new being that came from nowhere.” The duo is not only interested in giving phenomena an aural manifestation, but perhaps even directing it, as with opener to side 2: “Rain In Bilbao”. Here Coloccia’s vocals, Barnett’s synth work, and reversed loops use music as a form of sympathetic magic in an attempt to conjure a specific environment and experience.

VLF is ultimately a document of two artists channeling their shared wonderment with unseen worlds into a sensory experience in the form of musical composition.

Mattias Gustafsson - Frånvarande

Mattias Gustafsson

Frånvarande

12inchBAADM006LP
B.A.A.D.M.
12.04.2019

Frånvarande acts as both the prelude and epilogue to Mattias Gustafsson’s 2017 record Nattmusik, forming a temporal cradle around his B.A.A.D.M. debut.

Side A was recorded back in 2012 and originally released under his Ornaments alias, manifesting as the withered, rain-eroded memory of a majestic orchestral lament, with bowed cymbals singing through layers of rust and the sound of children floating in through an open window. It was this 20-minute piece that inspired us to present Gustafsson with the conceptual framework for Nattmusik, through which he explored the cyclical symbiosis of humanity and nature.

The four movements of side B were captured in winter 2018 as an elaboration on these themes, with pianos and loops tumbling into thickets of crumpled, perishing cassette. As a collection, these pieces frame Nattmusik as an absent point of origin; its reverberations are smeared across both the future and the past, yet the source sound is palpably missing. Just as the process of decay strands the object between the pre-degraded form and the eventual dissipation into the void, Frånvarande is a record that both clasps at moments passed and those yet to manifest, rendered nomadic and thirsting by the absence of its conceptual centre.

Opéra Mort - Film Works

Opéra Mort

Film Works

12inchBAADM004LP
B.A.A.D.M.
30.05.2019

As part of the 2016 festival Night of the Experimental Film, French duo Opéra Mort (= Èlg + Fusiller) performed a live soundtrack for two films that centre on the paradoxical symbiosis of love and death: ‘The Potted Psalm’ by Sidney Peterson and James Broughton, and ‘Dream Work’ by Peter Tscherkassky. Both films convey love and death as both direct opposites and kindred concepts, turning to cryptic surrealism, poetic hallucinations and flickering alternations between flesh and ecstatic abstraction. Opéra Mort’s sonic accompaniment is a squirming contradiction, fraught with micro-harmonic friction and bleeps of electronic alarm. Is the soundscape melding into a solitary whole or blowing itself apart?

With ‘Film Works’, the duo have adapted their soundtrack into a standalone recorded work. Synthesisers flicker like computers trapped inside calculative loops. Flailing organs knot into tendrils of microphone feedback. Occasionally it’s possible to identify traces of body and voice within the wretched lattice – resting-state heartbeats, regulatory beeps of life support – which are only ever faintly present within Opéra Mort’s transcendent elsewhere, like echoes humming through the membrane between the corporeal world and the heights of ecstasy. Just like the films that inspired it, ‘Film Works’ enacts the strange disputation that defines the climactic extremes of human experience: to love and death, the body is both the fundamental vessel and the husk that is left behind.

Mattias Gustafsson - Nattmusik

Mattias Gustafsson

Nattmusik

12inchBAADM005LP
B.A.A.D.M.
30.05.2019

According to the theories of Greek/Roman scientist Claudius Galenus (131–216 AD), human temperament has a direct and reactionary link to the world around us. A phlegmatic personality is connected to water and the moist chill of winter; the aridity of summer is associated with fire and human irascibility.

For the B.A.A.D.M. debut of Mattias Gustafsson (aka Altar Of Flies, Ornaments, Cryme), we presented him with this theory of human/world symbiosis and asked him to explore its numerous implications: the transience of environment and being, the regenerative intimacy between life and the earth, the prospect of death and decay as integral components of rebirth.

'Nattmusik' is Gustafsson’s first record under his own name, removing the mediation of the artistic alias to fully embrace the symbiosis between body and environment. Keyboards splutter through bad wiring and wither into despondency, with notes engulfed by the sounds of earthly stir (tectonic rumbles of low frequency, muffled winds of sine wave). Symphonies of piano and electronics start to bloom and then flicker into states of death as the temperature suddenly drops. Body and telluric elements respire into eachother, as the contours of Galenus’ theory ripple with crumbling field recordings and spurts of melodic dejection. 'Nattmusik' depicts a world in which emotional decay feeds the flourish of nature – an earth thriving upon inevitable human decline.

12.04.2019

We announce the joyous return of the spacecraft known as IQ+1 to Planet Earth.

After more than six years, which its members spent on experiments, improvisational side-missions, solo excursions, and hunting for material, we can finally welcome a third mission, following on from the highly acclaimed Tvárí v tvár (Face to Face, 2011) and IQ+1 (Polí 5, 2013).

The current line up – George Bagdasarov, Veronika Hladká (PIO), Jaroslav Tarnovski (Gurun Gurun, Wabi Experience, Jipangu), Petr Vrba (Rouilleux, Poisonous Frequencies, PIO), Michal Zboril (PIO, B4), and Katerina Bilejová – adheres to the philosophy of free improvisation. There is no captain to determine its momentary course, nor genre restrictions, nor sonic or musicianly hierarchy. The strategies remain unchanged, as does the instrumental variety, and the authentic excitement of live performance.

Mappa editions presents IQ+1’s third album, titled Conversaphone Plus, as the result of several séances recorded at the end of 2017. Every submersion in its depths is an unrepeatable experience. The organic sonic material is constantly contracting and expanding, adapting itself to the listener’s context, escaping beyond the horizon, creating mimicries, and enticing us to bubbling, popping, and jingling polyrhythms to then release its protective toxins. All six pieces boil on the narrow edge of chaotic decomposition and celestial order in which every sonic detail has its precisely determined position. Field recordings permeate the instruments on an equal footing, making it difficult to identify the sound, instrument, or player, so that each time the record is turned over, a new adventure begins. Federsel (B4, Handa Gote, Gurun Gurun) took care of the connective tissue between the pieces and the balanced post-production architecture.

Avoiding irritating instrumental exhibitionism, and egocentric deafness, Conversaphone Plus is nothing less than an uncompromising electro-acoustic testimony to the vitality of the Czech improvising scene. And it is nothing more than an attempt to connect sonic geology with astral listening.

Open the window a little – a messenger from the spacecraft known as IQ+1 is descending through the opening.

Andi Toma - Damn Lieu Lit

Infinite Greyscale release Damn Lieu Lit, a new 10" recording by Andi Toma, also known as one half of electronic music pioneers Mouse on Mars. Following on from the band's percussive masterclass, Lichter (also on Infinite Greyscale) and their ambitious 2018 album Dimensional People (Thrill Jockey), Damn Lieu Lit sees Toma going it alone in an exploration of off-kilter rhythms and extraterrestrial sounds. From an opening of bird song an inorganic structure is assembled; and with the stage constructed, the performance begins. What follows is a deep and engrossing exploration of an alien ethnography. Within a frame of hypnotic rhythms Toma traverses sounds and rituals to reveal field recordings from another planet.

Comes with a digital download, including an extended mix of Damn Lieu Lit. Each edition features handmade artwork by Paul McDevitt and Cornelius Quabeck. Screenprint by Ulrich Schmidt-Novak. Mastered by Cem Oral at Jammin Masters, cut at D&M, Berlin.

16.04.2019

Daughters Of The Sun's singer / guitarist Nick Koenigs has been toiling solo as Filthy Huns for a couple quiet years at this point, layering grease-stained drum machines with badlands guitar, mirage keys, and desolate vocals, alternately broke-down and road-burned. His debut is a dusty midnight ride through black hills. “Watch Of The Bear” in particular captures a loner-in-leather mood, headlight off, pushing 70, chasing the horizon under a sea of stars. Elsewhere there's woozy, hungover dub (“Hot Morning”), peyote campfire awakening (“Infinite Ride”) and stoned sunshine raga (“Out Of The Grave"). Barren times on the highway, through darkening deserts.

ISAN - Beautronics

Beautronics

2x12inchMORR122-DLP
Morr Music
29.04.2019

Special Record Store Day 2013 release! LP version includes free download! One explanation for the 90s-fascination with Casio, Korg and other analogue synthesizers is quickly at hand: The 1st video-game generation was coming of age and were happy to hear that their dearly loved “Space Invaders“-soundtrack was suddenly popping up in electronic music. It takes slightly longer to explain why one record from that time - “Beautronics“, the debut by UK-synth-duo ISAN first released in 1998 - kept its appeal until today. “Beautronics“ does not grab you immediately. You don’t hum these tunes after a few listens, in fact you might not even hum them after dozens of spins. It’s not about humming. It’s about soft cushions and a cosy duvet made of sounds, it’s about aural sheets floating around like warm humidity during a hot bath. Occasionally it’s even about IDM, but in a very late-night kind of way. Antony Ryan and Robin Saville, the two English lads behind ISAN, are very open about their goals. They separate the longer tracks with short, often abstract pieces they called “Tints“. So it’s as much about tonal colour, as it is about melodies. The “Tints“ form an interesting contrast between ambient sounds and the more focused tunes. But even their most bass-dominated songs such as “Skeek“ are not exactly four to the floor. There’s no more than one to the floor, while the rest is sailing somewhere above in a haze of beautiful sounds and melodies. The album’s sleeve and title are straightforward about this: it’s all about the human beauty in electronica. Just like your mom’s heartbeat that set the tone for the first nine months of your life, “Beautronics“ produces sounds that radiate a warmth and naturalness that make them feel familiar upon first listen. The 15 years since its initial release don’t change a thing about this. That’s why it’s certain, that “Beautronics“ will win a new generation of listeners with this re-issue.

King Midas Sound - Solitude

Woe are King Midas Sound on ’Solitude’, their crushingly desolate new album, auspiciously cued for a Valentine’s Day release on Shapednoise’s Cosmo Rhythmatic label. A meditation on loss, narrated by Roger Robisnon and produced by Kevin Martin (The Bug), ’Solitude’ sees KMS gut out their sound following the bittersweet shoegaze-dub blooms of their ‘Edition1’ 2015 collaboration with Fennesz, resulting in a starkly noirish elegy to extinguished romance and love in the endtimes

Combining the grown-up, confessional vulnerability of Robinson’s lyrics and dreader-than-dread delivery with the most stripped back arrangements in Kevin Martin’s entire catalogue, the duo drill deep into emotional sufferation with simultaneously suffocating yet somehow beautiful results. Over the course of 12 songs, they glacially limn a coming-to-terms with a loss that has been enforced or unexpected, and ultimately arrive at the starkest conclusions with cinematic effect.

’Solitude’ pushes King Midas Sound’s pessimism to heart-rinsing degrees. Staging Robinson in a series of vantablack scenes veiled by smoky, minimal synth-lighting, the poet processes irrational and incessant feelings of rejection and loneliness. From the aching desolation of ‘You Disappear’ to the unflinching realisations of ‘X’, the ache imparted by Robinson’s lyrics is only amplified by his quiet stoicism, while Kevin Martin finds power in a sense of deferred gratification and his embrace of negative space.

The effect is nothing less than transfixing in the physicality of Robinson’s descriptions and the detached nature of Martin’s sferic electronics on ‘In The Night’, while pangs of lush optimism lend an exquisite contrast to the desiccated riddim and gloom of ‘Alone’, and the sylvan keys in their sensuous reverie, ’Her Body’.

‘Solitude’ is a more than worthy follow-up to King Midas Sound’s two albums for Hyperdub and their collaboration with Fennesz for Ninja Tune. It’s bound to reset what you know about KMS, and become a go-to album for anyone going thru conscious uncoupling, domestic strife, or meditating on love in the age of info overload.

YPY is back with his third full-length album, his second on EM Records, following his 2016 debut Zurhyrethm, and 2020 on Where To Now? YPY is the solo alias of Osaka-based Koshiro Hino, who has honed his rhythmic instincts as leader of the acclaimed Japanese band goat and the sound installation/theatre project GEIST and Virginal Variations. His preoccupation with propulsion is on full display here, across five tracks of varying density and intensity, all thoroughly beat-oriented, with skeins of synthesized and sampled sound stretching to the horizon, rising from a bedrock of minimal drum machine pulses, all lovingly embraced in a cassette-borne sonic fug. The cover image and title hearken back to Hino’s past, with the image obscurely referencing his yesteryear green mohawk, and the title derived from Talking Heads, but this effervescent album, though recorded using cassette technology, is not a sad tale of nostalgia, rather a look at a present/pleasant reality. TRKRNR - Stimulate / No Summer Days (feat. Trailer Limon)

SF Bay Area's TRKRNR (Track Runner) team up with Trailer Limon (one half of SF's The Pendletons) to create two insta-classics for the dance floor and the bedrooms.
The A side, Stimulate, a a playfull sex-funk exploration that will elevate dance floors and get pulses racing, while on the flip is "No Summer Days", a smooth, vibey Sade-esque track. This record definitely showcases TRKRNR and Limon's love for creating classic sounding songs that would be at home played back to back with Rick James or Blondie.
TRKRNR (Track Runner) based in Richmond, California, is comprised of childhood friends Saul Vallens (Allen Valenzuela) & multi-instrumentalist and singer Gyrefunk (Vincent Czekus). The two musicians and dancers, who grew up together in San Jose, Ca., draw on deep backgrounds of house, hip hop, rock and pop to create a future facing, genre-busting sound that is both soulful and highly danceable. Employing everything from kalimbas, djembes, synthesizers, guitars, bass and basically anything they can get their hands on, the two continue to turn out friendly, crowd pleasing music that is modern yet classic. They are at home making four on the floor bangers as they are making psychadelic beat pop, dreamy lounge and tightly produced hip hop.

ARTISTIC CONTROL - WALKING IN LOVE'S SHADOW

Kez is a mysterious yet very prolific Cornish musician whose extensive material has been kept unreleased almost in its entirety. He rose from the ashes of punk and in 1979 being only 17 he was already experimenting with blending numerous forms of music and twisted electronics. He was part of several acclaimed acts like Aaah…! And Imago, but regarding his main project ARTISTIC CONTROL, only the cassette album ‘Bless it all’ saw the light of day in 1984. After Kez decided to go ahead on his own without any further musicians in 1985 and dive deeper into more synth based tunes, he recorded many songs on a 4-track cassette recorder with the only help of Karen Kay doing backing vocals. None of these songs would have been heard by anyone if Kez himself wouldn’t have shared some of them through Youtube, creating a cult following instantly. We have chosen the ones that in our opinion best represent Kez’s awesome musical imagination and skills and have made them available on a physical format for the first time ever. Ten songs are included in this vinyl release; three come from the mentioned 1984 ‘Bless it all’ cassette-only album, the rest being recorded between 1985 and 1987, with some of them 100% previously unheard.

We are excited to present you this selection of ARTISTIC CONTROL songs on an EXTREMELY LIMITED, HAND NUMBERED EDITION OF 165 COPIES, housed in a matt finish sleeve with insert (lyrics and credits) and including a download code. Download features five additional songs not on the vinyl.

Beautiful Swimmers - The Sound Of Love International 002

After signing on with Gatto Fritto’s mind-melting Sound of Love International Volume 1, we’re back, we can smell summer and we’re putting you in the capable hands of festival favourites, Washington DC’s Beautiful Swimmers.

A beautiful swimmer is a small blue crab. The Beautiful Swimmers are Ari Goldman and Andrew Field-Pickering (AKA Max D). And you, my friend, are about to get high on the happy. They’re here to take you on a gleeful joyride around their collective musical imagination.

The Swimmers are full-bore record enthusiasts you see, but whereas you might associate this with squirrelly, exclusive and crabby sorts, they are inclusive, human and warm. It’s a wide-eyed ebullient romp and the joy of discovery is one to share. And to see them DJ IS a joy - they’re having at least
as much fun as anyone else in the room, locked together tight, riding the same wave.

So even when shit gets somewhat darker, the tempos higher and sounds gnarlier (Analogous Doom) the world is never grey. When we’re stone cold balearic in the Adriatic (Plunky) the vibe is up, young and fun. Banging them B’more house beats? Well, you’re probably going to be recognising a welcoming RnB sample (KW Griff).

We’ve also been blessed with some Swimmer’s specials in the shape of ‘Blow Up Girl’ and ‘Living in a Zone’. Exclusive.

Ari and Andrew have previously worked in dog and childcare respectively. If this compilation were a dog it’d be a “rascal”, if it were a kid it’d be “spirited”. We can’t think of anyone better to be your guides, as they themselves might say, “it’s a vibe”.

This is the sound of Love International. Part Two.

London Modular Alliance - Material EP

Dimensions Recordings is proud to welcome London Modular Alliance back to the fold with their most dynamic and exciting release to date. Following on from 2017's superb Hands & Brains EP, the group present four new tracks on the 'Materials EP'.

Across the release, London Modular Alliance demonstrate their depth, technicality and playfulness in an EP that will find favour with dance floor enthusiasts and electro purists in equal measure. The London based crew are now firmly instated as the UK's prime electro proponents. From their powerful live shows and their small but perfectly sourced modular gear store in East London to their ever growing and impeccable catalogue, LMA are now established as a key artists in a reinvigorated and bristling electro scene worldwide.

Moons Delux's 'Know No Better (London Modular Alliance Remix)' is a crossover masterpiece. LMA's take on the Irish band's song sees them use a sprawling, vocal introduction, (with a vocal that might be more reminiscent of the likes of Caribou or even Thom Yorke) which eventually breaks to give way to a devastating barrage of beats that will no doubt see a broad range of DJs find space in their bags for it. 'No Response' strips things right back, tight, minimal production which is brimming with elastic funk and character - electro boogie. On the flip, 'Chrome' is a purist masterclass, energetic percussion, deep sub bass and detailed arrangement make it a versatile cut. The EP rounds off with 'Super Jupiter', and by no means are LMA letting up - the very fact that a track of this stature is final cut on the EP shows the sheer craftsmanship on display.

Hyperdub
09.04.2019

Since Danielle Mana's 2017 debut EP for Hyperdub, 'Creature', which was a taut, evocative suite of beatless, almost neo-classical electronics, we now find his music has caught an alien virus and started hallucinating. On 'Seven Steps Behind', the borders between reality and the weird have collapsed on each other, and with each listen through its zigzagging course, you're rewarded by its strange twists and turns. 'Seven Steps Behind' is an electronic album that doesn't always sound electronic; a great deal of the record has been created to sound like prepared pianos, harpsichords, cellos and flutes. At other times, sampled acoustic instruments and specially recorded sessions have been processed through software and careful editing. It's this sophisticated layering of contrasting versions of the same sources that help give this record its uncanny balance. The album also plays with your sense of time in its mostly drum-free hall of mirrors, pulling from minimalism, chamber music, dark jazz, and synthesiser experiments. Mana's singing voice also makes it's debut here, albeit adorned by abrasive FXs. His lyrics are encrypted in noise, in fitting with the music's chimeric character, casting images for the listener to decipher. His heavily manipulated voice enters on second track 'Myopia For The Future', sounding something like a singing motorbike pitched over bouncing ostinatos, or on 'No Body's inhuman, word-less range, where it's impossible to tell where the human finishes and the machine starts. Or in the case of 'Leverage For Survival' it's animal and machine. Here, as with the album's eponymous final track, a sensory assault subsides to reveal a heart-wrenching melancholy that anchors the record. Listening to 'Seven Steps Behind' is like stepping into a dream, with all the curious emotions and buried meaning that involves. Yet for all its restless, shifting energy it manages to hold both dissonance and melody in sweet proportion.

Patrizia Saronni - E Poi / Perchè Dovrei

Disco Segreta releases on 12 two true obscure italo-disco gems!

For the first time ever on a 12' release, Patrizia Saronni's 'E poi' and 'Perché Dovrei', only previously released as a 45 for the tiny Pongo label back in 1984.

'E poi' is a female-voiced tearjerker sung over a heart-melting italo-electro-synth line, while 'Perché Dovrei' is a power synth-pop-talo teenage rebellion anthem.

But the most wonderful discovery on the actual master, has been a *previously unreleased* alternate version of 'E Poi', that didn't make the original release, which sounds crafted for today's dancefloors. Release will also feature a remixTBA. As common with our quality standards, repress is officially licensed and taken from the actual analog masters !

Xao - Eternal Care Unit

Xao returns to Astral Black with his new eight-track LP, Eternal Care Unit. Created after relocating to Germany and distanced from the UK sounds and scenes that had influenced his previous work, ECU sees Xao further explore the ethereal futurism displayed on 2017's Alloys EP. In keeping with the title (Eternal Care Unit is a medical slang term for the morgue), the release soundtracks the transcendental shift from the physical to the spiritual realm.

Over the course of the record's thirty minute running time, Xao traverses through the hauntingly beautiful soundscapes of tracks like the opening 'Embryno' to the sonic brutalism of 'Corvid Tendencies' and 'Vent Jockey', interspersed with the driving off-kilter rhythms found on the likes of 'Bernet Franca' and 'Blades//Savants'.

The physical release comes with full colour sleeve artwork from fast rising designer Patrick Savile, whose has previously done work for the likes of Bokeh Versions, Warp, WGSN and more.

Palms Trax - To Paradise

To Paradise

Dekmantel Records
28.03.2019

Over the past few years, Palms Trax has cemented his place on the Dekmantel roster and become one of the family. His upbeat attitude and knack for selection have made Jay Donaldson one of the scene's most in-demand and warmly regarded selectors. Combining rare, globally-sourced finds with exuberant house anthems, his annual sets at Dekmantel Festival have showed a nearly unmatched capacity for filling floors and creating grooves. Now, the UK producer puts his talents to work on To Paradise, tapping classic Italo, wave and Balearic house for an EP that has summertime written all over it.

Title track "To Paradise" kicks things off with an infectious, melodic chorus that spirals into a pulsing rhythm. It's full of those 'hand-in-the-air' type moments, and topped with blissful vibes. "Love In Space" follows with a throbbing bassline melded with rich atmospheres. It's more Adriatic than Balearic, careening with an anthemic affection and destined for festival season. "Heron" veers away from the Italo vibes and standard structures that hold regular dance tracks together. A departure into more experimental electronics, the dynamics are controlled through rhythms and the synthesised melodies create forlorn narratives across machine-driven sequences. It's a dynamic finish to this considered and perfectly timed trio of offerings.

Slow White Fall - Total EP

Slow White Fall

Total EP

Downwards
01.04.2019

Techno mutant Oliver Ho invokes divine noise via distorted guitars, synths and drums
with hypnotic industrial psych-drone project Slow White Fall for Regis' Downwards label.
The 30 minute 'Total' EP is a naturally extension of Ho's increasingly noisy forays into
industrial musick found in his Broken English Club and Zov Zov outings of recent years.
Gnashing right at the biting point, the EP's five tracks are variously soused in distortion
to degrees recalling The VU, Swans, and Bourbonese Qualk, bringing Ho as far as he's
travelled from techno proper and closest to his formative industrial and rock influences.
He fully commits to this sound with opener 'A Blinding Light', toiling booming drums and
slavish hi-hats with electric blue raga drones in a way that resonates with everything
from Tony Conrad to Clay Rendering, before 'Releasing Together' locks into a tantric vortex
sounding like a duel between TG and John Carpenter.
'Slate' then returns to the amp worship with sanctifying slow riff distortion worthy of
Dylan Carlson, while Ho's plaintive vocals interject the sludgy crawl of 'Our Eyes', and 'Vein'
sounds like he's repeatedly stabbing a live 1/4' jack into industrial rock's beached and
bloated corpus, releasing noxious gasses that build into a tarry fug of guitar distortion.
This is Ho at his most stare-down intense and timelessly, narcotically effective.

Pigmalião - ILPI001 EP

Pigmalião is moving forward in his musical direction and sound, this release really shows where he is and is going. The tracks Aurora and Baskéda are ever moving sounds of energy sure to a dark basement but keeping the originality Pigmalião always has making his tracks stand out in the constant traffic of electronic music being released. Zingili is another great example of his always great sample selection taking you on a Fifth Element style mechanical beats journey to a distant planet's civilisation and the final track Bahiafro takes the album down in energy to a slower tempo but hauntingly beautiful, like that long slow journey back to Earth with the memories of the amazing adventure you have just been on.

LAGAFFE TALES
28.03.2019

Lagaffe Tales introduces new BROT series with four electro-tinged cuts from Iceland's Felix Leifur entitled 'BROT01'.

Reflecting the harsh nature of Iceland's unforgiving, barren landscape, Lagaffe Tales push alternative styles of modern dance music with their new BROT catalogue. Lagaffe's main series includes releases from Icelandic talent like Intr0beatz, Ilo and label boss Jonbjorn, with Lagaffe Tales maintaining its reputation for supporting local artists by inviting Felix Leifur to the imprint. Felix has built a solid reputation for himself following releases on Frits Wentink's Bobby Donny label and Dirt Crew Recordings with 'BROT01' being the first in a trilogy of releases coming in 2019.

'Brot 1' kicks things off with resounding electro drums, thick low end and glitchy oscillations before 'Brot 2' delivers gloomy synth notes and clattering 909 claps floating around modulating obscurities. Raw percussion balanced with stabbing bass and airy pads take the focus in 'Brot 3' until 'Brot 4 rounds things off with delicate pulsations bouncing delightfully off the polished kicks and wavering melodies keeping you locked in throughout.

Laroye - Colombia 26a

Tiff's Joints
24.04.2019

Widely revered French DJ and producer, Thomas Arroyo aka Laroye has released music exploring a variety of different genres from broken beat on the early days of MCDE and Faces Records, through to funk and boogie with QWESTLIFE on Midnight Riot, Black Riot and ISM Records and beyond. His creativity extends to a number of side projects, like Soul Rüma (with Andre Espeut) and experimental modular jams and atmospheric blues with his own project The Tom Laroye Experiment.

His next release on Tiff's Joints has already received the seal of approval from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Alexander Nut, Volcov and more. The A1, 'Colombia 26a', sets pace for the release with heavy Afro-Latin percussion, a thick bassline and the type of dexterous musicality the label is steadily becoming known for. 'The Trickster' is built around an infectiously squelchy keys part, bolstered by a bouncing bassline, the track culminates in a soaring lead melody and ridiculous synth solo. 'Espiritú' is more downtempo and spacey. Kicking off with a relentlessly driving and hypnotic polyrhythm, and complete with an uplifting choral arrangement, seriously trippy lapsteel guitar (!) and a mysterious guiding voice.

Paul Prudence - Ficciones

Ficciones

2x12inchNLR3100
NLS Records
28.05.2019

This new set of compositions retreats towards a quieter and more contemplative zone, weaving together the soft accents of field-recordings, microscopic sound fragments and modular synthesis. The result is a hypnotic mesh of musique concrète, drone, prepared sounds and shimmering electronic synthesis. The pieces fluctuate between the machine-like and the organic, and sometimes combine the two to create a beguiling sonic ecology. It's with a kind of forensic precision that Prudence has reconstructed from his palette these unexpected chance encounters of sound. Modular rhythmic collages are grafted onto subtle melodic phrases, stuttering percussive structures are held in orbit by elliptical sinusoidal drones. Prudence talks about these compositions as being audio-visual experiences without the visual part. The tracks create a sense of motion in space, kinetic activity and the existence of teeming entities.

An exploration of traditional Chadian music with an electronic twist...

Chad is in many ways a blind spot on the map of today's global musical conversation. Overlooked, misunderstood and misrepresented, outside observers rarely concede the country an autonomous voice over its past, present and future. N'Djamena, the dusty capital of Chad with its well-kept stories of boundary-breaking musical collaborations and thirst for experimentation is a city that reflects the country's diversity: the arid North, bordering the Sahara, where nomadic tribes revere the endless desert with their handcrafted instruments. The lush tropical South, where the frenetic drumming of local initiation ceremonies blends with sounds of neighboring Congo and Cameroon. Right in the middle: N'Djamena, a forgotten melting pot of cultures and peoples bursting with unrecorded stories of life at the margins of the world's attention.

Tackling this view is precisely one of the aims of Pulo NDJ. In May 2018, Nickodemus accepted an invitation from Hape Collective to travel to N'Djamena to teach a group of young adults DJ'ing and electronic music production, which resulted in the encounter between and a group of talented artists from Cameroon, Chad, Congo and Togo. After a weeklong series of listening to original songs & demos, the recordings continued in a pop-up studio created by DJ Buosis & Nickodemus which culimated in Desert To Douala, an album featuring 11 songs, all originally written and recorded in N'Djamena.

The project found its inspiration in the city's un-narrated diversity and seeks to explore the possibilities offered by technology to demonstrate how the country's rich heritage connects with existing musical conversations. It strives to create bridges in a world of walls. It has been a yearlong creative process that built friendships and fostered understanding among people united by a passion for music and creation.

Cupio Dissolvi

12inchAV!046
AVANT! Records
22.02.2019

Lebanon Hanover's bassist William Maybelline is back with his solo project. After the debut album Sable from 2015, Qual strikes back with a three-track 12' maxi-single. Each one of these new songs explore a different dimension of Maybelline's approach to Body/Wave electronics.

The title-track Cupio Dissolvi is what we may already call classic Qual: gloomy and throbbing, synth-driven and labyrinthine. A Bloody Blob explores new martial slants, with war-like timpani and a marching robot gait. Rape Me in the Parthenon is a 8 minute long dancefloor mayhem anthem scanned by some pounding techno drumbeat and EBM snare and pads. The most alert of you already checked this in some Ancient Methods DJset. By far the most extreme track Qual recorded so far.

'Buried in flowers with hands of gold / Buried together we'll never mold' shall be thy epitaph here, as well as your message engraved on virgin vinyl.

New edition of 300 on clear wax!

Robert ÆOLUS Myers - Talisman

Over two years in the making, 'Talisman' is a retrospective and re-interpretative celebration of the work of American musician Robert ÆOLUS Myers. Touched first by the emotional depth of the music, and subsequently by the warmth and wisdom of the man, Origin Peoples sought to capture a snapshot on this special vinyl release.

This newest chapter of the ÆOLUS myth seen for the first time on vinyl are five of his most expressive pieces, alongside a quartet of remixes by kindred spirits from all corners of the globe. This is the first time his music has been interpreted by others, and Robert's delight at the result speaks volumes of his adventurous and open-minded attitude. Approaching the often intangible new age genre with a humanist approach, Robert creates immersive and expansive pieces which connect with the listener on a spiritual and emotional level.

Archetypal narratives are retold through nuanced electronics, evocative motifs and empathetic flute, the varied compositions informed by Myers' classical training, spiritual pursuits and study of ethnomusicology. Part retrospective, part remix project, 'Talisman' is the perfect reflection of Robert ÆOLUS Myers, a musician whose timeless expression of theme and emotion has enriched minds, bodies and souls for almost 40 years.
