Attilio - Art Takes A Holiday

Performing throughout the 1980s as Art Carnage to the gloomy hipsters of Portland, Attilio Panissidi III decided he needed a vacation. The result of his creative escape became Art Takes A Holiday, an album of fabricated FM synthscapes and MIDI environments that embrace elements of smooth jazz, new age, and pop.

Attilio had been playing in bands since he was thirteen, and had opened live shows for countless acts, from The Shangri-Las to Bruce Hornsby. The experience of producing, performing, as well as years spent writing for local music magazine The Downtowner, earned Attilio a gig to score a commercial film for a home security systems company. The opportunity allowed him to explore softer elements in his writing, and he created a suite of songs much deeper than the commission warranted. These instrumentals caught the attention of Marlon McClain (Gap Band, Shock), who invited Attilio to produce and release the music on his fledgling Nu-Vision label. Thus Art Takes A Holiday found its commercial release on cassette and CD in 1989. Although originally intended as soundtrack music, the album retains its own momentum, narrative and evocative imagery that betrays Attilio's years of crafting songs. Attilio found a perfect ambience on this mythic retreat, somewhere between William Aura's summer cottage on Half Moon Bay and DJ Alfredo's Balearic island getaway.

Anthony Parasole - Infrared Vision

Parasole's music fits the bill for cutting-edge electronic music. Infrared Vision is a display of his love for polyrhythmic drum patterns, post-club sketches, twisted dance floor gems and classy, big room-ready tunes.
.
Few words of the artist:

''When I started to conceptualize my album I had a few end goals'', explains Parasole. ''I wanted to string my own style through Infrared Vision, so it would be familiar to the people who like my music. In tandem, I strived to produce a fresh voice sonically and experimented with a few new production techniques. I also grabbed ideas outside of techno and house, because I didn't want to be influenced by anything new. I was listening to a lot of jazz, hip-hop, Nine Inch Nails and Prince for example.''

Parasole took his time to write, produce and record Infrared Vision, dividing the process into three steps. ''First I wrote the album in words, pinning down ideas and track concepts on a notepad. Subsequently I transferred my ideas to my gear. Due to a heavy tour schedule I sometimes brought gear with me on the road, to continue my sketch process on the hardware. I then recorded it at home and at Phil Moffa's studio in New York. When the music was fully finished the album morphed to its final version. Phil Moffa laid down the final mixdown at Butcha Sound Studios, while Marco Spaventi handled the mastering.''

Ben Penn - Very Important EP

June 2018, Amsterdam, Nl: 12 Months Ago We Concluded A Series Of Experiments With A Test Subject Named Ben Penn. A Year On, We Decided To Repeat This Experiment At His Tilburg Base. Once Again, The Results Were Starting.
.
After Being Provided With A Sizeable Dose Of An Enhanced And Notably Stronger Derivative Of 4-ho Met (codenamed St011), Penn Not Only Reported Intense Hallucinations But Also Enhanced Music Production Capabilities. With The Aid Of Electronic Instruments And Hardware, He Worked Quickly, Producing Both His Trademark higher Level Inter-dimensional Funk' And Compositions That Defied Our Previous Expectations.

During The Early Stages Of His St011 Experience, Penn Completely Ignored The Provided Rhythm Composer And Instead Crafted A Colourful, Humid, Jazzy And Beat-free Track Entitled nix', Which Boasted Loose And Fluid Synthesizer Motifs. As His Hallucinatory Experience Intensified, Penn Giddily Tapped Out Tropical Rhythms On The Provided Beat-making Device, Smothering Them In Alien Electronics And Sticky Melodies. When We Asked What This Devilishly Good Cut Was Called, He Simply Replied: not Important'.

As The Test Went On And The Most Intense Symptoms Died Down, Penn Was Much Like His Old Self. Before The St011 Wore Off Completely, He Was Able To Finish Two Examples Of His Trademark inter-dimensional Funk': The Skewed, Introspective, Bassline-driven Wooziness Of ben' And The Mazy, Kaleidoscopic Goodness Of people'. The Latter Composition Was Particularly Potent And Ear Pleasing, Suggesting That His St011 Experience Had Finished On An Intense High.

Blacksea Não Maya - Máquina de Vénus

Príncipe’s reign of fire continues with the shockingly heavy return of the Blacksea Não Maya trio after the label’s banner year of shellings from Nídia, DJ Nigga Fox, and DJ Firmeza.
In step with the more polished production advances of their label mates, Lisbon’s DJ Kolt, DJ Noronha, and DJ Perigoso - aka Blacksea Não Maya - arrive 5 years on from their previous showing with a remarkably darker, muscular take on mutated Angolan dance music. Fiercely technoid and blessed with a newfound sense of late night drama, the sound of ‘Máquina de Vénus’ is exactly how we imagine this sound in 2020; reflecting the march of the machines and cosmic events beyond anyone’s control in their slickly mechanised rhythms and infectiously brooding atmospheres.
Like the leaps and bounds in production values and intricate arrangements found on the DJ Nigga Fox and Nídia albums over the past year, Blacksea Não Maya keep pace in their own way,
working to ruggedly squashed variations of Tarraxho and Batida styles that come to recall the developments of the UK’s hardcore continuum during the ‘90s into the late ‘00s. But where that scene arguably ran out of energy a long time ago, Blacksea Não Maya boldly charge it into an uncertain future.
Kicking off with the beastly detonations and hulking slow techno of ‘Terror’, they swing hard off-the-bone in ‘Obscure’, and weave in hard trap and reggaeton nods on ’Tchiling District’ to set the tone on the A-side, before the lustrous cyber-noir licks and choral pads of ‘Horizonte’ open the B-side to the slow, dive-bombing synths and the industrial-tarraxho swag of ‘Bubadagash’, a bubbling technoid stepper named ‘Africanalidade’, and for terrific measure, the positive rave upswing of ‘Estranhos e Loucos’ with its speed garage-style vocal chops and head high jackers pressure.
Breathtaking, thrilling, outrageously strong gear for body music fiends and dance connoisseurs

Gooooose & DJ Scotch Egg - JAC

Gooooose&Dj Scotch Egg

JAC

12inchSBKT035
SVBKVLT
21.09.2020

Gnashing hardcore spirit meets razor-sharp sound design in a keen collab between Svbkvlt MVP Gooooose and chiptune survivor DJ Scotch Egg, with searing remixes by Slikback and Seven Orbits & TSVI
The debut collaboration between the Japanese and Chinese mentalists, ‘JAC’ was forged in the wake of Nyege Nyege Tapes’ 2019 festival, where Shigeru Ishihara aka Scotch Egg’s playful sense of drama proved an ideal match for Gooooose’s precision-tuned, bespoke software in the studio.
As mainstay of ‘00s electronica, with recent credits in Seefeel and WaqWaq Kingdom, Ishihara appears to lend a sort of cryptic sci-fi story-telling to the exacting, super-crisp contours and pointillist percussion of Gooooose across six surprisingly emotive works that provide a rocket fuel for the remixers, spurring Slikback to run riot while hard drum guys TSVI & Seven Orbits double down on their already excellent work for Svbkvlt.
Bringing Gooooose’s work arguably closer to the devilishness of peer 33EMYBW, title tune ‘JAC’ tweaks a fine line of breakcore, juke and neo-Far Eastern hyperstep that admirably updates what we know of Scotch Egg, while ‘Dengrouse’ cuts a super minimal figure recalling Untold’s vacuumpacked Eski tekkers, and ‘Rolex’ forms a wickedly chewy, turbulent tribute to Uganda’s favourite
street food alongside a lush, choral footwork pinnacle of their efforts in ‘Altered Destiny’.
Cemented with Swordman Kitala’s hoarse holler on the dancehall trample of ‘Goose Egg Dub’, plus the face-pulling G-force of Slikback’s rabid take on ‘JAC’ and Seven Orbits & TSVI’s glorious ambient hard drum remix of ‘Altered Destiny’, it’s all a proper doozy for the dancefloor dreamers and anyone looking beyond the usual rave hotspots for real, upfront thrills.

Olaf Blanch - Borealis EP

Olaf Blanch debuts on Modern Obscure Music with the Borealis EP, which also features a remix by Suzanne Kraft. The Barcelona based producer presents four original tracks that explore different Balearic soundscapes, from the exciting adventure of Nur Yawa to the deep ambience of Birds. For reference points, think Mark Barrott’s Islands project or some of the great Ambient records of the 1990s. This isn’t all. Suzanne Kraft turns Nur Yawa on its head, creating a catchy and very danceable Nu Beat styled remix

KUMP
18.09.2020

After he featured on Various #2, the Russian artist Yssue is back on KUMP with three, slightly incantational, Industrial/Tribalistic tracks.

In this EP, Dmitry Nekrotkov explores Nature and expresses his vision of the bonds which Mankind shares with It. What's more? Two remixes. Ayaz, an artist from Azerbaidjan and founder of the Yalanci label, delivered a Dub-Techno remix which will turn your brain upside down before chopping it in tiny bits.

The second remix was made by the Duo DJ PG, from Lauzanne (Switzerland). The two pals, both members of the group "La Sacree Deter" revisited the track "Lust" adding a Psyche-dubik touch to it. Perfect for a matinee on your sofa.

"My music is often a reflection of the state in which I am at a certain period of my life, since I grew up from a musical punk scene, this often involves a certain set of means of expression. In essence, I am in an endless struggle to express some quite lively and human emotions through the cold and artificial world of electronic sounds. That is why there is a lot of melody and sometimes even drama in my music, and this is why I'm often got bored with a static music. This EP is called "Naturalist", a terms that defines a person who has devoted his life to the study of nature and its kingdoms. This directly relates to my strong belief that the further society advances, the more people are losing touch with nature, something that is real and to which they all belong."

- Dmitry Nekrotkov.

Delay Grounds - Onomatopoeia

Following his debut outing on our most recent compilation, Delay Grounds is back with three bass heavy submissions, each bubbling with effervescent melodies that twist and transform into the imitation of their phonetic namesakes.

On the A-side, Coruscant builds and modulates with glitching rhythms and glittering synths, leading us onto the storming tantrum of Stompy; both tracks demonstrating the innovative intricacy we’ve come to expect from this burgeoning producer.

On the flip, Clatter’s playful yet introspective trajectory completes Delays Grounds’ solo excursion with fellow newcomer, Suze tapping the brakes in their explosive “Heeley Mix” to round off the EP.

Onomatopoeia's inviting digital landscape offers us an uplifting, yet ponderous escape during these times of uncertainty and change.

Jóhann Jóhannsson, Hildur Guðnadóttir & Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe - End of Summer

nd of Summer captures Jóhann Jóhannsson's journey to the Antarctic Peninsula to discover the calm scenery of a landscape changing seasons, barely influenced or even noticed by humanity. The super 8 film is a comforting study of a peaceful setting in one of the most crucial and endangered areas of our planet.

Accompanied by rich and detailed field recordings of the surrounding this footage makes a perfect foundation for Jóhann's musical compositions, performed together with fellow musicians and friends Hildur Guðnadóttir and Robert A. A. Lowe. The varying use of cello, voice, synthesizer and electronics creates a listening experience that reflects both the vast beauty of the quiet scenery and the necessary cautiousness of its inhabitants. As if gliding through the steep ice, its rough edges and the harmonious water movements, organic arrangements are patiently devolving into voice and electronic based ambience that adds warmth to the icy, artefact laden environment.

The soundtrack to End of Summer is an emotional, enduring listen and a compelling experience. Forming a soundscape as broad as the view it was inspired by yet equally heartwarming, devotion to the music will slow down time and provide a moment of harmony within times of change.

LP edition features the soundtrack, as well as Field Recordings and Sound Design from End of Summer on the B-Side, exclusively on vinyl. The reissue coincides with the first-ever digital release of Jóhann's short film over on Mubi.

LEGOWELT - Secrets After Dreams

We all know anything released on Mystic Quantum is worth buying for the cover art alone, and this mightily impressive return of Legowelt is certainly no different. Beautiful on the inside and out, it's packed with the kind of delicately detailed soundscapes we've come to expect from the revered producer, who proves every bit of the musicality we associate him with across seven very good tracks.

'Squirrel' is perhaps the exception to the rule, its frustrated and distorted rumbling breakbeat and chain-gang high-hats cry out for some monster or other to be fed through the arrangement. On the whole, though, this is far from club stuff, opening on the lush bleeped harmonies of 'Once At The In & Out Burger Academy', closing out on 'Vesper Sprites'' mysterious, breathy refrains and metallic percussive accents, by way of the cinema-worthy piano piece, 'Meekian Lovedance'. Enough to keep you going until next month's album.

The Dubwood Allstars / The Time And Space Machine - Under Dubwood / River Theme

Rivertones - the recorded music of Caught by the River - have repressed their classic 2012 Dylan Thomas-in-dub 7" Under Dubwood by the Dubwood Allstars.

Although Under Dubwood might seem an incongruous mix - the words of Dylan Thomas, the voice of Richard Burton and the studio sounds of King Tubby - the resulting single actually makes perfect sense - a gloriously woozy psychedelic skank that places Llareggub somewhere just outside downtown Kingston, JA. Since its release five years ago, Under Dubwood has been a staple on BBC6 Music and was used as soundbed music for the BBC's coverage of Dylan Thomas' centenary in 2014. It remains hugely in demand from the Caught by the River shop and has been sold out for the last eighteen months. The identity of the Dubwood Allstars remains a mystery to all at Rivertones.

On the B-side of the Under Dubwood 7" is River Theme by the Time and Space Machine (aka acid house stalwart Richard Norris of the Grid and Beyond the Wizard's Sleeve). River Theme is a hypnotic, fuzzed-up garage groove that's equal parts Dirty Water Club and Trash.

Leon Lowman - Liquid Diamonds

Following on from co--compiling one of 2012's best received compilations 'Into The Light: A Journey into Greek Electronic Music', new Amsterdam based record label 'Music From Memory' sets sail with a compilation of lo--fi beach funk and lazy synth jams from the Rhode Island keyboardist and ocean loving Leon Lowman.
As well as a devoted painter and surfer of the East Coast, the synthesizer loving Lowman privately released two albums 'Syntheseas' (1980) and it's follow up cassette only 'Sound Horizon' (1982). Something of a homage to his love of the local seashore and the women he was trying to woo there, the albums also express Leon's pure love of the synthesizer sound and reflect his unique melodic wanderings.

With Leon's albums meeting little commercial success at the time of there release, both albums have in recent years become highly sought after. Along with previously unreleased material from the time, 'Liquid Diamonds' highlights Leon Lowman's unique blend of low fi synth funk and surf ambience.

Potter Natalizia Zen - Magari

Potter Natalizia Zen

Magari

12inchELP054
Ecstatic
21.09.2020

Master synthesists Colin Potter (NWW), Alessio Natalizia (Not Waving), and Guido Zen reprise their supergroup for Ecstatic with a seductively serpentine follow-up to their superb debut from a
couple of years ago.
PNZ’s pulsing, twanging, expansive ‘Magari’ was recorded between 2018-2020 in the slipstream of ’Shut Your Eyes On The Way Out’, which is surely one of the strongest new kosmiche-related albums of recent years. Where that album refreshed classic styles of European synth music for modern ears, ‘Magari’ - meaning “I Wish” in Italian - adapts their style to the unique Afro-Latin lilt of Brazilian music with central use of the Berimbau; a single-stringed percussion instrument
commonly associated with the elegant martial art/dance of Capoeira, which the band’s Guido Zen brought home from his travels in South America. Combined with their juicy, almost fleshly arps and Guitar pedal-generated computer voice, the results are wonderfully wide-eyed, embracing bouts of motorik rhythm beside vertiginous noise wormholes and mystic tone poems that speak to a cumulative experience spanning decades spent hunting for life between the wires.
Like their first LP, much of the recording took place remotely or in pairs, and rarely with all three present, before the parts were mixed down at Colin’s studio in Leytonstone. In its journey between the intricate meters and perpendicular vectors of ‘Too Much Traffic’, and their mesh of curdled tones with their phone recordings of a manic preacher in Camberwell on ‘Saved’, they variously recall Craig Leon’s alien invocations of Dogon folk tales as much as the heady dissonance of Alessandro Cortini; producing outstanding pieces of tangibly haptic substance in ‘Sergio’ and infectiously tip-of-tongue Berimbau twang on ‘Gennaio’, and for good measure, something like
Phil Collins gently losing the plot after healthy dose of Ayahuasca in ‘Fill’, while ‘Ancora’ sounds like Basic Channel scoring Herzog’s Aguirre.

Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith - The Mosaic Of Transformation(Transparent vinyll)

West coast composer, artist, and producer Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith has chartered a pioneering career with multiple critically-acclaimed albums since 2015. Following the release of The Kid in 2017, Smith focused her energy in several directions. She founded Touchtheplants, a multidisciplinary creative environment for projects including the first volumes in her instrumental Electronic Series and pocket-sized poetry books on the practice of listening within. She’s continued to explore the endless possibilities of electronic instruments as well as the shapes, movements, and expressions found in the physical body’s relationship to sound and color. It is this life-guiding interest that forms the foundational frequencies of her most recent full-length, The Mosaic of Transformation, a bright, sensorial glide through unbound wave phenomena and the radiant power discovered within oneself.

“I guess in one sentence, this album is my expression of love and appreciation for electricity,” says Smith. While writing and recording, she embraced adaily practice of physical movement, passing electricity through her body and into motion, in ways reflecting her audio practice, which sends currents through modular synthesizers and into the air through speakers. Not a dancer by any traditional definition, she taught herself improvisatory movement realizing flexibility, strength, and unexpectedly, a “visual language” stemming from the human body and comprised of vibrational shapes. Understood as cymatics, as Smith says, “as a reference for how frequencies can be visualized,” much like a mosaic.

Smith describes her first encounters with this mosaic; “the inspiration came to me in a sudden bubble of joy. It was accompanied by a multitude of shapes that weremoving seamlessly from one into the other...My movement practice has been aconstant transformation piece by piece. I made this album in the same way. Every day I would transform what I did yesterday...into something else. This album has gone through about 12 different versions of itself.” As it has arrived, in a completed state, The Mosaic of Transformation is a holistic manifestation of embodied motions. Smith’s signature textural curiosity that fans have grown to adore pivots naturally into a proprioceptive study of melody and timbre. Airy organ and voice interweave with burbling Buchla-spawned harmonic bubbles.

Lord Tusk has associated with acts like Klein, John T. Gast, Dean Blunt, Yasiin Bey AKA Mos Def, and released on Jon Rust's Levels, Funkineven's Apron, Soul Jazz Records and Low Income $quad.

Communiqué is made of breathy, glossy Sci-Fi electro, bitcrushed drum samples and Minneapolitan funk feng shui, the hits and stabs of new jack swing and FM boogie, all pieced together with a one-take energy but a meticulous attention to detail. It's songwriting for a miscellaneous kind of soundsystem music, body music, flamboyant across tempo, from the yearning thump of Shyne Eyed Gal to the puffed-up strut of Champion Lovers (sounding like a home-taped Electrifying Mojo opener), the staggered slink of Beyond Limitation's unfiltered tones to the 4x4 uptempo skid of Don't Be Shy or the veering slap-bass groove of Elevation. It's a record that shoots around corners, conjuring lazy romances and smokey vistas, lit by the nocturnal shimmer of an electrified city, streaked with gargantuan, shrill, birdlike call-and-response riffs and visited by the astral bodies of Teddy Riley, Gerald Donald, Prince.

Flevans - It Just Goes / Who's Got Me RMXS

Multi-instrumentalist/producer extraordinaire - Flevans has been on fire the last few months. With more plays across the BBC 6Music and Radio 2 than you can count on all your limbs combined, his recent singles have proved to be a huge success on the air-waves.

Following up this early enthusiasm with the stellar LP 'Part Time Millionaire' in March, the album was received very warmly by critics and fans alike.

With source material this good it was time to have some fun and at the end of March we released the undeniably brilliant Art of Tones Remix of Who's Got Me – featuring the brilliant Laura Vane on vocals. Deep delicious disco. That's how we'd describe it but don't take our word for it, listen to Todd Edwards, Bill Brewster, Kraak & Smaak, Hector Romero and Francois Kevorkian – all of whom are supporting it. Or listen to Diplo, Mistajam, Annie Nightingale, and Gilles Peterson who have all supported his past releases on the wireless..

Well good as that was, the fun doesn't stop there as the next instalment of remix magic has disco man of the moment Ray Mang giving the special treatment to It Just Goes (feat. Sarah Scott). He's always been a legend but his re-work of the phenomenal handclap band was THE remix of 2018 for the disco cognoscenti and he has turned in some of his very best work here.

Yes - we like to listen to music online and have the convenience of an endless collection always available but for the masochists who like to break their backs lugging heavy boxes of vinyl round to gigs – don't worry – we got your back (broke) by putting both of these killer remixes on one extremely desirable 12"

Retiree - House or Home

Australian group Retiree return to Rhythm Section INTL in 2018 with a new record 'House Or Home'.The musical project of Matt Crowley, Tori Holleman and Marco Vella; Retiree have steadily congealed their broad influences into a unique emulsion of strongly rhythmic and emotional music. From two releases, they've been described as 'pared back 1980s comfort pop for all occasions', having 'a whole lot of criss-crossing rhythm', containing 'swirling synth flourishes, languid wistful vocals and strutting drum machines". The album's songs explore the theme of 'house or home' and what that means in present day Australia for different people. They journey from an aboriginal tent embassy on the south coast of New South Wales, a retirement village, a one room flat in Ringwood and a sleepless 17 hour stop over in Malaysia.

Flug 8

Leuchkraft

CassetteR$N#3
Ransom Note
04.04.2017

Leuchtkraft is the second album from Frankfurt based multidisciplinary artist Daniel 'Flug 8' Herrmann. Returning to the banks of hardware with which he created the organic electronica of his critically acclaimed debut Trans Atlantik Herrmann's sound has evolved to a higher state. Now, untethered from drums, his floatation tank soundscapes soar to the heavens, buoyed on wave after shimmering wave of lush drone and cascading melody.

Translated as 'luminescence', the 10 tracks of Leuchtkraft smudge between moods; the delicate icicle chimes of Kristallpalast give way to the widescreen spacewalk of John Carpenter-esque Man High. Mittelwelle is an ominous descent of nervy creaks and distant distortion, whilst Sierra Charlie is a mirage of Eastern sun-baked drone.... But the album is best consumed as one long, unravelling drift, a sprawl trip through half remembered dreams and future fantasies.

A renowned musician and photographer, Herrmann has previously released music on Disko B and Smaul, collaborated with members of Einstürzende Neubauten, and art directed for both Roman Flugel's label Playhouse label, and the iconic Live at The Robert Johnson mix series. For Leuchkraft he has created a series of images ruminating on the notion of illumination, where light sources battle through stark contrasts of darkness. Whether this is a metaphor for our confused world, or a wider examination on the universality of light is entirely up to the audience to decide...

Emotional Response is delighted to announce Foreign Affairs - a limited edition special remix 7-inch single featuring reworks from Alexis Georgopoulos & Jefre Cantu-Ledesma's "Fragments of A Season" album by Woo and Felicia Atkinson.

Last year's ""Fragments of A Season"" represented a unique chapter in both artist's canon. Georgopoulos, who released the Arp album "Zebra" in June this year and Cantu-Ledesma, who released "On The Echoing Green" in October 2017 - both on Mexican Summer and to critical acclaim - wanted to stretch out and create a discrete work. A peripheral listen to "Fragments" revealed a resonant album of delicate, ambient vignettes, suggesting a Balearic take on Vini Reilly, Young Marble Giants and other poetically-minded, minimalistic post-punk era bands.

The Brothers Ives aka Woo were a major influence on the album's makers and so AG and JCL are thrilled they've submitted a beautiful reworking of the album's "Marine". Whereas the original sounded like Marine Girls and The Gist getting together for a nice beach day jam, Woo's rework transforms it into pulsating track of glistening proportions. Percolating synths, some guitar and clarinet - the true classic, idiosyncratic Woo-ification - creates a woozy, romantic, impossible to categorize slice of Balearic meets dub atmospherics.

If "Marine" is all midday sun, intoxicating and potently optimistic, Atkinson's remake represents the literal and figurative flip, bringing out the overcast dreaminess to "Cleo". Sounding like an outtake from a Rohmer film, or perhaps Cocteau Twins and Broadcast having a picnic in Biarritz, the version veers between abstraction, celluloid ambiguity and suggested narrative. Atkinson's reworking adds poetry of the tune (quite literally!) with her soft vocal under-gliding to perfection. Representing a temporary idyll, a meeting point where cobblestone streets lead to the sea. At nightfall, a discotheque heard in the distance. The morning mist burns off. Only such memories remain.

The Chi Factory - The Bamboo Recordings

Repress!

Jacobus Derwort started exploring sonic soundscapes listening to his short-wave world receiver at the age of 12. There he would hear music from Africa, China, Japan, Indonesia, South America and beyond. He started playing guitar, piano, percussion and saxophone.

He met Hanyo van Oosterom in 1978 and they started the legendary cult rock band, 'The Jones'. Derwort was playing the sax, van Oosterom the drums. They started conducting sound experiments in Hanyo's small cellar in the Dutch village of
Krimpen aan den IJssel.

In the early eighties they made their first cassette, 'The Kallikatsou'. Hanyo started the ambient collective CHI in 1983. Jacobus was the first musician to join CHI. Together, they went to the magic rock 'The Kallikatsou' on the island of Patmos, Greece. Here, Hanyo had stayed for months in a cave for some deep soul-searching. He heard the sound of CHI in the silence of the night like a message from out of space. Being together at the Kallikatsou they shaped the foundation of CHI, making handmade flutes from local bamboo and conducting field recordings of water, crickets, owls, goats, wind, etc...

Back home they asked Willem Cramer to join CHI, and later Michel Banabila. They released a legendary ambient cassette, 'The Original Recordings', in 1983 which soon became a collectors item. CHI stopped in 1987 (and still now nobody knows exactly why). Willem Cramer and Michel Banabila started the world music collective 'East Meets West' in 1989. Hanyo and Jacobus kept recording ambient soundscapes.

Jacobus was working on his 'Bamboo' recordings. Hanyo recorded the first tracks for 'The Kallikatsou Experience'. Neither album was ever released. They returned a few times together to The Kallikatsou, but there the history seems to end...

Civic Jams Remixes

WARP
14.08.2020

Shielding - Collecting Seaweed EP

Swedish producer Shielding lands on Facta and K-LONE’s Wisdom Teeth imprint with an extended collection of hazy dub techno, drone and downtempo. With previous releases on Kimochi and Leif’s UntilMyHeartStops imprint (as Okänd Konstnär), ‘Collecting Seaweed’ is the artist’s fullest body of work to date, comprising six tracks cherrypicked from a vast set of recordings produced over the last two years. The record’s pulse recalls Basic Channel and the clicks-n-cuts of Jan Jelinek and SND, but its textures are loose and painterly. Looping, pulsating textures sprawl out to create rejuvenating, emotive soundscapes. Patterns repeat, but no two strokes are the same.

ARIEL KALMA - Nuits Blanches au Studio 116

Transversales Disques is very glad to announce the release of Nuits Blanches au
Studio 116, unreleased rarities from Ariel Kalma’s personal archives recorded in the
legendary GRM’s Studio 116 during the 70’s.
Born and raised in Paris, Ariel Kalma started playing the recorder and saxophone as a
youth. After successive studies of Computer Science, Music and Art in Paris he performed
in various concerts from middle-age music to free jazz duo. Ariel performed and recorded
with several bands (J. Higelin, R. Pinhas, NYL, G. Scornic, Baden Powell…).
After learning circular breathing on soprano sax, Ariel could include those endless notes
into his own long-delay-effect system, dual Revox set-up and two tape machines “chained”
together to form a long delay system.
In France during the mid-1970s, Kalma was staffed as a recording assistant at legendary
Groupe de Recherches Musicales (INA GRM) studios, where Ariel recorded some of his
compositions in the Studio 116; the same music “concrete” laboratory that spawned
masterpieces by members Luc Ferrari, Bernard Parmegiani…

Wolfgang Voigt - Wolfgang Voigt Presents Rückverzauberung Live In London

Repress!

'Then it was time for the man himself, Wolfgang Voigt. This, to put it simply, was a masterclass in ambient music. The sounds, beautiful; the transitions; perfect; the experience, unforgettable. The sound emanating from his quite simple set up filled up the church completely, in a room lit only by a few candles, his music shone through and brought everything to life. Everyone and everything became one with the music, moving with its ups and downs, delighting in it's near perfection. I went to this concert expecting something amazing, I got much more than that, an enthralling evening from start to finish'.
