Black To Comm - Oocyte Oil & Stolen Androgens

The music of Black To Comm is as powerfully intoxicating as it is subtly unnerving. The solo project of shapeshifting German producer and sound artist Marc Richter, his mastery of sonic manipulation is matched only by his astounding clarity of vision.

Following the acclaimed ‘Seven Horses For Seven Kings’ released just a year ago, ‘Oocyte Oil & Stolen Androgens’ applies Richter’s wild imagination to an exploration of the human voice, standing as some of his most immediate and affecting music to date.

Each of his phantasmagoric works is meticulously constructed from an omnivorous array of smudged samples and other sonic detritus, painstakingly collected by Richter from across the history of recorded music or his immediate environment and altered into beguiling new shapes. Sound sources seem tantalizingly familiar and yet often just out of reach, flickering at the edges of the subconscious.

Available on CD, translucent green vinyl and black vinyl. All vinyl packaged with digital download card.

Bartosz Kruczynski - Selected Media 2016-2018

Emotional Response is delighted to present a special project, a collection of music from Bartosz Kruczynski, recorded for "Selected Media" and presented here as a time-piece of his continuing works.

Initially known as one half of sample based project Ptaki (The Very Polish Cut Outs / Transatlantyk), Kruczynski first appeared for Emotional Response as The Phantom for the first series of SchleiBen in 2015. Featuring two works of deep 'fourth world' sounds, they highlighted a shift to more mellow, synthetic and hazy compositions.

His break out came, however, when he explored this sound further on his eponymous album Baltic Beat, for the acclaimed Growing Bin Records. This has been augmented with the recent club based music as one half of the wonderful Earth Trax (Rhythm Section International / Phonica Records) project.

Here though, Kruczynski returns to the ambient and ethereal - plus a touch of dub techno - to showcase his expansive collaborative work with Polish studio, TVP Culture. Given free artistic license, the 15 'short form' recordings included here were for programming, in the main, on modern Polish Art including the likes of Magdalena Abakanowicz, Miroslaw Balka and Tadeusz Kantor, as well as some international aspects for Enrico Prampolini, Ai Weiwei and Monica Bonvicini.

Taken from over 70 episodes the material included recollects imagery, video and memory to present a series of short vignettes that together create one whole. Minimal and hazy ambience (V, VII, VIII, XI, XII) envisages classic melodies and chords and is accompanied by further 'fourth world' pieces (I, II, III, VII, X) that present an oeuvre that is recognisably the music of Kruczynski, while remaining fresh and perfectly meditative.

A counter can be found in the atmospheric dub works (IV, IX, XIV) that hint at echo chamber environs to get infinitely lost in. As an album then, "Selected Media" can be heard as a snapshot to Kruczynski's music journey, a meeting of art and music that is oft overlooked but very much essential.

Black Phoebe - Black Phoebe

Mark Lanegan and his wife, Shelley Brien (Singrid Lund) pursue a gothic wave and washed-out techno muse in a deliciously cranky follow-up to Lanegan’s acclaimed ‘Downwelling’ LP with Not Waving last year.
Featuring members of the Mark Lanegan Band including Martyn LeNoble (Porno For Pyros) on bass, Black Phoebe play up to their passions for the gloomy rumination of PIL, Siouxsie and The Banshees, Sandwell District, Bauhaus and Joy Division across a perfectly unpredicted suite of Lynchian techno dirges and strung-out songwriting.
Like the ‘Downwelling’ LP before it, Black Phoebe’s starkly affected craft is bound to surprise and enthral Lanegan’s legion followers (accumulated thru work with everyone from Screaming Trees to QOTSA) and likely to lend your listening space a ripe sort of LA vibe recalling everything from a fantasy of John Duncan jamming with Vatican Shadow, to the likeminded glumness of fellow husband/wife duo Tara & Mike Connelly’s Clay Rendering.
Scowling opener ’Come To The Shadow King’ epitomises the project’s brooding allure with nearly 9 minutes of driving dance and LeNoble’s skulking bass buried beneath gaunt organ pads, forming a dank bed for the vocals which are placed high in the mix but sink down, down into dread feeling and “bloodstained streets” described in the lyrics. LeNoble’s snaking bass is also a crucial anchor to Lanegan’s more bruised vox in ‘Saturn Rising’, and perfectly underlines Shelley’s sultry delivery in the blacklight darkroom rave feel of ’Shiva Danced Me Down’, before ‘Rising High Water’ carves back to Lanegan’s more typical aesthetic with dusky croon matched by hazy, bluesy organ refrain that beautifully brings the album to rest.

Next in the compiler hotseat for seminal mix series ‘Back to Mine’ is the legendary DJ and producer Fatboy Slim. Having sold over 10 million records and embarked on a number of sold out arena tours, the esteemed record collector and all round great selector delves deep into his weighty collection at his home to create a heady journey of funk and soul. The collection opens with Dave Barker & Ansell Collins ‘Monkey Spanner’ – a reggae single released in 1971 from the Kingston based duo working for the infamous producer Lee “Scratch” Perry.

There are a few rare finds, Donal Leace ‘Today Won’t Come Again’, Wind ‘Grooving With Mr Bloe’ and George Rene ‘Smokey Joe’s La La’. And the most recognisable for many no doubt is Betty Chung’s 1968 classic ‘Bang Bang’ thanks to the vocals of the Nancy Sinatra cover being sampled in the Audio Bullys rework in 2005.

Sonar Base - We Attack At Dawn

'We Attack Before Dawn' is the 3rd instalment in the 'Sonar Base Transmissions' series on Deeptrax created by the long standing Dutch Electro pioneer Frank De Groodt under his Sonar Base alias. After the Deeptrax reissue of the legendary first album 'Sonar Bases 4-10' and the first vinyl issue of the mini album 'Dark Matter', this next chapter is yet another collection of savage, clever and spooky electro tracks.

First issued on vinyl by Cultivated Electronics in 2012, this reissue of 'We Attack Before Dawn' features a somewhat different tracklisting.

It opens with the full bodied, TB-303-smeared electro of 'The Deadly Storms of Uranus'. Slices of snare tear through an acrid acid line with shadows stalking the backdrop - a turgid and terrific opener. The second one, 'The Soul Of e1-Q42z' was only available as digital download before, but this track with pitch-dark haunted synth sounds and rolling beats would perfectly fit in a horror movie soundtrack and fully deserves a vinyl release.

The 303 is once again employed for 'The Journey Home'. But the aggression of 'Deadly Storms...' is pared back, with Sonar Base lowering the BPM for a meandering work of dereliction. 'The Swarm' is a hardy piece of raw electro too, but in comparison to the first trio of mechanized militia 'The Swarm' is sheathed. Last one, 'Photon Filers' is also on vinyl for the first time, and much like 'The Soul...', it sends you severe shivers up and down your spine. Don't say we didn't warn you!

Frank de Groodt started releasing in the early 1990s, on Djax-Up-Beats (as The Operator, Optic Crux, Urban Electro) and on U-Trax (Sonar Base, Pieces of a Pensive State of Mind). Two of his later releases as FastGraph (on Klakson) got reissued in 2018. He is also involved in projects like Ultradyne and Random XS and one anonymous project...

Sam McClellan - Music of the five elements

The optimum effect of Music of the Five Elements will be achieved if each side of this recording is played through, from beginning to end without interruption. Music of the Five Elements, when used as a meditational or body work tool, rather than entertainment, will increase in effect over time. Overplaying or improper use, however, may eventually diminish its designed effect'
.
Music is the healing force of the universe. It's an ancient idea bandied about by Pythagoras and Plato. In the last century, music as medication has been explored by musicians as diverse as Albert Ayler, Spacemen 3 and Pauline Oliveros. Nowhere did this concept gain more traction than in the so-called realm of New Age Music, an entire movement of synth droners and echoey flautists recording home-baked healing mantras on 4-track. In recent years, thanks to cassette collecting devotees and open-minded music journalists, New Age has shed its flowing robes and is being mined for the truly incredible music that swells under its pastel surface. Musician/acupressurist Sam McClellan's 1982 Music of the Five Elements is one of those revelatory discoveries, an unrivalled work of intense research and focus, simultaneously a near perfect work of art and a scientifically sound elixir for body and mind.

After studying electronic composition at Hampshire College with Randall McClellan (no relation), Sam McClellan became intrigued with the possibilities of healing through music. He explored this idea by applying the ancient Chinese philosophy of medicine to the principles of musical composition. Using the pentatonic scale (the traditional scale of Chinese music), McClellan related each of the notes to one of the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal Water), and created five variations for each. He experimented with tempo, beat, pitch, duration, and sound quality, studying the effect on people's energy levels. Using the results of his tests he developed a comprehensive theory of sonic healing and spent the next year composing an album designed to help people achieve inner balance, reducing anxiety and energy depletion.

Music of the Five Elements is not only the acoustic massage' that McClellan set out to make, but is a fully realized and peerless piece of music. Taking cues from Minimalism, American Primitive guitar (Fahey & Basho) and even psychedelia, the album is a continuous sound voyage for voice, synthesizer, guitar, bowed bass, piano, effects and ciao (Chinese flute) all played by McClellan himself. Although divided into sections, the journey is best undertaken as a whole, without distraction.

Melissa Guion’s second offering for Kranky retains the glassy gauze of her debut, 2016’s Precious Systems, but shaded starker and darker, framed by mechanical rhythms and humid industrial moods. She speaks of Sour Cherry Bell as something of a reckoning with her tools of creation: “I was curious to see how far I could go with them, even if that meant reaching the ends of their capacity to do what I wanted. But I never exhausted them and they never exhausted me.”

Utilizing her trusted combination of instrumentation, Guion tracked the record between her New Orleans home and rehearsal space, capturing chemistries both intimate and expansive. The songs sway between twilit shoegaze, downer ballads, and gothic pop, mapping a delicate palette of electric melancholies, though in retrospect she cites as her primary muse the notion of power: “lost and found, corporeal and cerebral, harnessed and exploited, of one and many, in this reality and the next.” Sour Cherry Bell reverberates beyond the here and now into scenes unseen, worlds unheard.

Forced Extraction is his first release for Beat Concern following an LP on the Melbourne-based Drawing Heat, and tapes for seminal labels, Night People and Clan Destine Records. Campbell has honed his unique take on experimental techno over the last few years by building compositions with all analogue hardware and modular synthesis. Forced Extraction sees Collector at his most incisive, carving out four pummelling tracks across the 12". Piercing feedback, foreboding synth movements and bass drones are anchored by rigid drum programming with an attention to heavy industrial rhythms. An exciting peek into the coal-face of underground Australian electronics.

BREAKER BREAKER
28.09.2020

On August 21st rising DJ/producer Haider presents the ‘Endless Clouds’ EP on his own label Breaker Breaker, where pristine future electro meets high tech funk and raw, jacking house. This new release follows praise from a wide selection of world-class DJs and media for his past 12”s, not to mention achievements as label owner, party promoter, canny early spotter of talent and general proactive instigator. Now based in Berlin but originally from Sheffield via a stint in London, there’s a commonality throughout all of Haider Masroor’s music that links both thematically and geographically. His
productions recall both Steel City bleep and its distant younger cousin bassline, using only sparse elements, with beats and bass at the fore, to deadly effect. London is audible too via
the spiky energy of grime and the swinging shuffle of UK funky, and so is Berlin, evident in the sleek sheen and efficient precision.
On ‘Maracuja’ lush pads, pitched-up vocal snippets, bleeps and proper electro beats ride atop a deep, purring bassline that unfurls like giant waves, with sub bass punctuation adding further hefty depth.
The bouncy, punchy beats and pristine gleam of ‘I Came To Destroy’ are somewhere between celestial Miami bass and the aquatic grooves of Drexciya, again propelled by gigantic slo-mo bass tones.
A modern take on the cut-up samples of 90s house, on ‘Grove Street’ Haider mixes elements of classic French touch, Chicago rawness and low fi outsider grit, to create something very enticing indeed.

There is a functional connection to dance music here, honing in on the celestial bliss's human element embedded within a sound fraught with inhumanity. The music is emotional, hostile, dark, grungy, dissenting, acidic and energetic. Mostly based on repetitive patterns, the distorted yet perfectly balanced percussion drills through the concrete warehouse walls long into the night. Miki Yui - Aperio!

Miki Yui

Aperio!

12inchHG2007
Hallow Ground
09.10.2020

The title of Miki Yui’s seventh solo album Aperio! is derived from the latin origin of April, "aperire" meaning “to open” or “to reveal”. Hinting at the way her music unveils another reality which is hidden beneath the surface. The title also reflects the aperiodic character of the music, its irregularity. Like a magic word to reveal the mysterious cosmos, each song opens up another intimate world of wonders.

„All my work emerges from my physical experience, the inspiration often comes much later though, after the experience is digested and almost forgotten, then it crystallises and becomes a source for my music.“

It is indeed no accident that the first track of Aperio! is entitled „Listening (oneness)“: it vibrates for ten full minutes with and within
us. It reflects the art of Miki Yui coming into existence. The Düsseldorf based Japanese artist approaches the world around her from a sensual perspective rather than in an analytic-logical way, still both paradigms of art production manifest their influence on the process. Miki Yui says: „In my music, I play the game of turning the abstract into concrete and vice versa.“

This is obvious in all of the compositions on Aperio!. Her music combines otherworldly and dream world experiences, creating environments of multiple atmospheres, both warm and inviting but at times irritatingly cold and airless. They stimulate all kinds of feelings in us: astonishment, sadness, yearning, wondering, and hope. For her it does not matter where the elements of her cobweb originate: from field recordings to abstract and artificial creations to electroacoustic sounds. She remarks, “revealing the source would only limit the imagination of the listeners. My sounds exist to trigger their own imagination“
Miki Yui is born in Tokyo, based in Düsseldorf. Crossing the boundary of music and fine art, she is known for her unique minimalistic and organic approach towards music since 1999 exploring the grey zone of our perception and imagination. Since 2008, parallel to her own work, she is in charge of the Klaus Dinger Archive, who was her partner.

P.A. Hülsenbeck & Michael Schönheit - Reaping From The Conflux

Philipp Hülsenbeck and Michael Schönheit entered their collaborative space, the Great Hall of Gewandhaus Leipzig, in spring 2019, in order to explore the sonic potential of the Schuke organ juxtaposed with unrestrained electronic synthesis and otherworldy digital processing. With ease, clarity and fruitful respect towards the others craft, they composed Reaping From The Conflux, an hour long work of music, condensed in a synergy of opposing musical aesthetics, teetering between acoustic instrumentation and digital manipulation — a push and pull between discordance and tranquility. Intermingling the organic with the inorganic in an unbiased exchange, Hülsenbeck and Schönheit created a dense work shifting from sombre to celestial, leaving enough space in the room to allow sound to breathe. In order to interweave digital and material realms, Hülsenbeck’s software synthesizers blasting into the concert hall were given the same attention as the 6.845 pipes making up the gigantic organ, an instrument often referred to as the queen of instruments.

The sharp, synth-driven Peak Independence is counterpointed by the serenity that inhabits the repeating Basso Ostinato in Entities as well as Hülsenbeck’s piano playing on Now Smile. The latter two pieces feature contributions by Schönheit’s wife Katharina Dargel (Gewandhausorchester Leipzig) on viola, Tsepo Kolitsoe Pooe (The Miagi Orchestra, The String Archestra) on cello and Johannes Weber (Unguarded, Jungstötter) on double bass.

After his studies in conducting, piano and organ, Michael Schönheit started his first organist position in 1985, just one year before being appointed Gewandhausorganist in Leipzig in 1986. In this position he assumes artistic responsibility for the Gewandhaus organ concerts and thematic cycles, as well as collaborating with members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in the chamber music series and appearing as soloist with the Orchestra. Michael Schönheit has been Artistic Director of the Merseburg Organ Festival since 1994, assuming the additional role of Merseburg Cathedral Organist in 1996. He is in great demand as soloist the world over, appearing across Europe, the USA and Japan. He has performed as soloist with orchestras such as the Gewandhaus Orchestra, Sächsische Staatskapelle Dresden, Munich Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic, to name but a few.

Philipp Hülsenbeck started his musical career as part of the experimental pop outfit Sizarr. Between 2009 and 2016, they released two albums, Psycho Boy Happy and Nurture, played tours across Europe with festival appearances in the USA, Iceland and Spain. After the band went on hiatus in 2017, he started focusing on his solo works, conceiving his solo debut Garden Of Stone, released in 2018 via Altin Village & Mine. Since 2017, he has been working with Fabian Altstötter as part of his project Jungstötter. Together with long-time collaborator Tim Roth (1k Flowers, Sin Maldita) he runs the record label and art platform Unguarded.

Reaping From The Conflux was commissioned by Gewandhaus Leipzig in 2019 as part of their collaborative program Two Play To Play. The event series Two Play To Play is initiated and produced by Gewandhaus Leipzig, since 2017. It is designed to bring together musicians from the free scene with ensembles of Gewandhausorchestra, to encourage a creative process over the course of a playtime and provide the basic requirements for a collaborative work to emerge from the process. Two Play To Play offers the participant musicians time and space to experiment with new ways of collaborating. The process is accompanied by portrait concerts, talks, public rehearsals and a blog documenting and showcasing the creative process. Through the program Gewandhausorchestra wants to nurture and intensify the cooperation between the orchestra and the free scene, give the audience an entrance to new musical forms, while providing the space for independent musical works to originate from it.

Solar X - X-Rated

Solar X

X-Rated

2x12inchGXD002
GALAXIID
17.05.2019

For the second release on the Galaxiid imprint, a label of electronic music archeology and quality, we are transported to the strange sonic world of an elusive 90s pioneer. Solar X's 1997 album X-Rated will be released for the first time on vinyl, as well as reissued digitally, with new artwork by the Japanese artist Keiichi Tanaami. Two worlds connecting sonically, visually and culturally.

Solar X enjoyed a burgeoning career in post-Perestroika Moscow making playful, low-tech electronica from Soviet analogue instruments, which he masterfully configured to forge animated compositions and dancefloor rarities. Fascinated by chaos and complexity, his music explores the ways in which our minds can be manipulated by structure - an endeavour quite plausibly linked to his other career as a lecturer and researcher of AI, information theory and cognitive science, his interest in which was in turn triggered by his young experiments in computer music.

Solar X gained international attention at a time when Russia was (quite unfairly) seen as a vacuum for electronic music, but was exploding in the period of piracy, poverty and freedom following the collapse of the USSR. Young Russians had benefited from the soviet education system and there was a strong DIY computer programming and music scene, fuelled by hackers, gear freaks and party animals. Viewed from today, the album is reborn at a time of further political and social strife, which many see as fuelling the huge creativity and radical thinking of modern Russia's young creatives.

X-Rated treats tempo and form as fluid concepts, administering sudden changes to its sonic landscape with disorienting effect, underlain with a subtle dose of humour and experimentation. Downtempo trip-hop sits alongside frenetic IDM and blistering electro, all bound together by peculiar melodic inflections and lively distortions. Warm, trippy harmonies and robotic synths are offset with angular drums, shifting erratically through moods and genres with cunning intent. Much like his contemporaries from the era, it's his ability to breathe life into a humble production setup that makes his music so compelling some twenty one years later.

The track titles are from a book of call girl cards in London phone booths, that reached the artist in Moscow in 1995. "I liked the titles from these cards, which were self-promoting and offering pleasure (e.g. "Mistress awaits you"). So, I thought since my tracks also offered some kind of pleasure, they might as well advertise this through their titles.'

Label head Nina Kraviz was introduced to the work of the 83 year old sensei Keiichi Tanaami by Ukawa Naoshiro, founder of Dommune in Tokyo, one of the brightest figureheads for the arts in Japan, responsible for the graphic design of the cover. In September 2017 Nina played for the opening of Tanaami-san's first exhibition in Moscow at Gary Tatintsian Gallery. Nina performed a live sound palette, to accompany the looping 7 minute animation, of experimental music from the Soviet Union, Russian pioneers of electronic music like Species Of Fishes and SolarX, Soviet-time pioneer Lev Termen, Kuryochin, avant-guard rock mixed with some Stockhausen and just pure abstract sounds, as well as treasured artists like Biogen.

Tanaami's illustrative work has strong sexual elements, so out of the five art pieces Nina selected and commissioned for Galaxiid, the first fits perfectly for 'X-rated'. The vertical line of text on the left is the traditional form for Japanese covers of foreign releases. The cover, together with the accompanying poster and sticker, are printed in Japan to ensure the highest print quality and purity of the colours.

Joe Jones - Solar Music Tent

LP reissue of the cassette edition "Solar Music Tent" documenting an installation and performance in Hagen, Germany, originally released by Joe Jones in 1982 in an edition of 10 copies. From the early 1980s onwards, Joe Jones released a handful of self-recorded music machine performances on tape under his own record label "Tone-Deaf Music". Most tapes came in a standard xeroxed sleeve with a handwritten title and instrument listing. A few, including "Solar Music Tent", were released in combination with a book: The cassette was included in a red ring binder that held a handwritten photo documentation of the performance of the same name at Karl-Ernst-Osthaus-Museum in Hagen on April 1, 1982, a handwritten music notebook, and an invitation card. The recording itself was titled "Solar Music #5" and was made on March 16, 1982, with the instrument ensemble of the Solar Music Tent at Jones' apartment in Düsseldorf.Like the previous Jones releases on Edition Telemark, this reissue is limited to 200 copies and comes in a gate-fold PVC sleeve: The right-hand side holds the LP, the left-hand side holds A4-sized facsimiles of all artwork that was included in the original edition.

'gulden onversneden' is the out-of-the-blue debut of klein volk, a cozy quatre-mains that used to brighten up birthdays and bedroom parties before it all got out of hand. The ten tracks of 'gulden onversneden' capture klein volk's cherished naïveté during the drawling heatwave days of June 2018, when the world cup frenzy ravaged the streets, squares and minds of tiny Belgium - a brief window in time that diffracted everything unwaveringly into black, yellow and red.

Luca Duran - Circunvalar

Circunvalar

AKOYA CIRCLES
13.12.2019

A muscular tribute to the analogue innovation and body music of the 1980s. Incorporating myriad hints of new wave, soft industrial and proto-acid, Luca Duran once again demonstrates his ability to take the sounds that have influenced his work and spin their heritage into a sincere, playful and most importantly, fresh release. A worthy follow up on his recent Clone Royal Oak release on his own Akoya Circles imprint! The record opens with the punchy 'Body Mechanics', a purely physical jam loaded with vampish synths and pounding drums, offset with a loved-up vocal sample. 'Romancia Negativa' was recorded while in Bogota in late 2018, and is informed by the experimentation and abandon of DIY songwriting and band culture, while maintaining it's foot on the dancefloor. Luca Duran's razor-sharp nous for a groove is immediately reestablished on the flip with the patient, acidic 'Life Wires', a deceptively complex analogue jam that bubbles with analogue energy and left field details. The EP concludes with 'Circunavalar', an ethereal blend of Luca Duran's sublime oscillations that leads listeners and dancers gently to a conclusion to a spacious heaven of meditative bass weight.
