W3c - State Of Absolute Alienation

Latvian producer W3C, taking his moniker from the acronym for the World Wide Web Consortium, affords oversight to the totality of the Internet comparable to his namesake standards organization. And where the latter concerns itself with education, outreach and software development, the former is a pastiche and collage savant - using online connectivity and access to wrangle all strains of electronic music and collide their respective particles into an unrecognizable, yet eerily inviting sonic edifices. Debuting in style, earlier this year, with the vinyl-only "Atmospheric Entry" EP, via Pinch's Tectonic-side-venture Cold Recordings, W3C now joins the Infinite Machine family with "State Of Absolute Alienation", on 12" and digital. Opener "Ascension (Intro)" does what it says on the tin - it stands as an apt overture to the proceedings herein, leaning on harsh, bass-heavy noise bursts before sprinkling in grime decorations and ascendant, reverb-drenched, hollow-synth contrapuntal melody that very much anchors the record into the now, referencing the likes of instrumental grime revivalists such as Dark0, Murlo or Slackk. "Xenotrack" then shifts gears into what sounds like an inspired take on the psytrance of yesteryear, only slower, steadier..., A degraded, alien morphology supporting a nonetheless "club" grammar - making the title, yet again, quite self-explanatory. ...,Which rings true a third time for "Bot-o'-War", a raucous industrial epic which evokes a combat deployment scene in a mecha-centric direct-to-video feature, wherein the subtle naval theming of the title is aurally transcribed into the suffocating, submerged sound design of the latter half. On the flip, "Short Circuit" (the grimiest of the lot), an unintuitive blend of Mumdance doing his thing, a run-of-the-mill "Ice Rink" homage and a trap lead that could turn heads at a GHE20G0TH1K party, somehow works. Finally, "Invasion", replete with sci-fi-blockbuster-trailer aesthetics, sounds like if Two Steps from Hell remixed a mash-up of individually much subtler cuts from Pan Sonic and Gatekeeper, respectively. Absolute alienation indeed.

Desto - Immortality Ep

Desto

Immortality Ep

12inchSGNLF009
Signal Life
13.03.2017

Please take a moment to realize that when you're reading this you are inevitably closer to your death than when you started. Immortality is Signal Life lynchpin Desto's first outing in over three years. Instead of disappearing, he took the hiatus in the limelight, producing the Finnish album chart topping, yet non-compromising rap album for cult rapper Eevil Stöö, headlining festival season main stages and clubs across Finland. At the same time he has vigorously curated the bi-weekly Signal Life radio show, which works as a an incubating hub for up and coming artists from the brinks of bass-fueled what-do-you-call-it protogenres around the globe. But the Immortality EP sees the re-emergence of the original alias, Desto. The EP is built around the 160bpm mark founded on the stark aesthetics of footwork paired with Desto's signature pitch-dark brooding melodies. Opener Flames and title track Immortality expand furthest from the footwork realm towards a wider field of electronic music. Pulse Cathedral, a track that started from a late night session at Jamie Woon's crib in 2013, continues the percussive explosions of footwork with staggering syncopation, and serves as an antithesis for the footwork jungle appropriation of recent years. The fully Chicago drum programming and the apparent lack of jungle breaks (albeit a clear presence of jungle feel) combines the energy of both genres without falling victim to cheap imitations. The abundance of other influences includes the west-coast-meets-early-DMZ vibes of Do I Look Like I Give A Shit and the underground Memphis beats glint on 504 Gateway Timeout. Shackleton claimed that death is not final, but Desto is taking his moment to remind make most of what time you have as it is limited.

Expressway Yo-yo Dieting - Undone Harmony Following

The return of one of the weirdest producers out there, sometimes known as DJ Yo Yo Dieting, sometimes known as Indignant Senility, this time deploying a set of syruppy chopped & screwed productions that sound something like DJ Screw processed thru guitar pedals or Lil Ugly Mane heard booming from the next block. This is basically the most satisfying out-there mixtape of the year...

Incorrigible noise mutant Pat Maher buries chopped 'n screwed hip hop in proper, cranky noise on the long awaited follow-up to his Bubblethug album as Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting. Imagine a DJ Screw tape covered in gravy, left to bake in the sun and then kneaded thru guitar pedals and you've got some taste of the chewy, thuggish ruggish gear on this killer dish.

While Maher may be as well known for his fractal techno as Diamond Catalog or his smeared 78 sessions in The Caretaker-esque Indignant Senility project, it was under the Expressway Yo-Yo Dieting alias that he first really got under the skin of popular consciousness, bubbling up alongside Lil B's seminal Rain In England on Weird Forest Records c. 2010 to ruggedly reset American hip hop from oblique, avant new perspectives.

Aside from a few mixtapes, Undone Harmony Following is the project's first appearance since then and picks up exactly where he left us, huffing up classic and little known hip hop joints and spitting them out as hazy, masticated globules of gristle and noise perfect for the muggiest, blunted listening sessions.

They're like the sonic equivalent of a noise weirdo idly doodling graf sigils in a battered sketchbook for his own gratitude, and thankfully Undone Harmony Following allows everyone else to peer over his shoulder see what he's scribbling, 13 raw, oozing cuts of slurred vocals and distended grooves that sag over the belt line, dripping rivulets of grease and grit, and always appearing to be on the brink of lethargic collapse.

Its ultimate value lies in that heavy-lidded space between woke and fugged-out dream lyf, and in the way which Maher drags the listener into his uniquely suspended, effected temporality that makes this record almost dangerously, druggily seductive and as vital as it gets right now...

Mungo's Hi Fi - Rules Of The Dance Feat. Charlie P (jd Mix)

Ltd single-sided 180g 12" Vinyl. If you have heard Kahn & Neek's Fabric mix you will know this tune. It started appearing in their sets early this year and brings a level of darkness to Charlie P's vocal pitching it down to about 3 semitones away from hell. Combined with JD's deep instrumental it becomes a melancholic masterpiece. Catch the limited onesided press before it vanishes.

P Jam - Pepper Pot / Chalice Feat Champion

P Jam is one the of founding pioneers of Grime, and also was a part of north London's infamous outfit Dice Recordings, which boast label mates Skepta, and Big Narstie. P Jam has had production/features from Grime A listers such as, Wretch 32, Jme, Kano, D Double E and former label mates Big Narstie and Skepta to name a few. Now he's back with his third instalment on Hardrive. Pepper Pot is a Grime Dancehall infused track. It has a feel like P Jam took himself to King Jammy's studio and turned out this absolute banger. Already getting a lot of pirate and underground club rotation. P jam called upon Champion for this combination for track entitled Chalice, which leans more towards the studio one sound, and also reminiscent of the early days of DMZ & FWD. Theses tracks getting played by Four Tet, Zed Bias, Terror Danjah, Slimzee & Spooky.

Swindle is a multi instrumentalist, producer and DJ from London. He has self released his music as far back as 2006, and featured in many projects between then and his debut album that came via Mala's Deep Medi in 2013. 'Long Live The Jazz' established Swindle on the global circuit as a DJ and Live Act. The follow up 'Peace Love & Music' in 2015 documented his global travel from London to LA, Cape Town to Tokyo and Shanghai to Glasgow. Featuring TC, Flowdan, Terri Walker and more, it landed with rave reviews, and the breakout track 'Mad Ting' feat JME became his most successful song to date. The spirit of this continues with Swindle's next project 'A Trilogy In Funk'. Three EPs, showing three sides to his tastes and talents. Part One is three tracks recorded while in Sao Paolo, Brazil with local musicians while on tour in September. Part Two is inspired by his roots in the London Grime scene, collaborating with veteran MCs D Double E and Ghetts. Part Three is something that his followers have long waited for, a straight up P-Funk project, recorded in LA. Across the three projects, they encompass styles that you normally couldn't pin to one artist, but Swindle's unmistakable energy powers through all of them. As always, he backs his musical depth with strong visuals, documenting the process of how these records came together, giving an insight into his process from the studio to the release. 2016 has seen him continue touring his live band across festivals like Glastonbury, Love Supreme, Boomtown and Shambala, while DJing alongside his Butterz label mates at their fabric residency in London and beyond.

Cosmology Selections 3x12"

Cosmic Bridge
15.02.2017

For its first vinyl album Cosmic Bridge celebrates the diversity and strength of its international roster with a selection of 12 tracks from the celebrated Cosmology digital compilation series, which earned a DJ Mag compilation of the year shortlist in 2014.

Cosmology Selections is one for the label's ardent followers with some of the best loved tracks from the series being pressed to vinyl — across three 12's — for the first time. Making the cut are label mainstays Danny Scrilla, Moresounds, Kromestar, and Om Unit who each contribute distinct takes on the dubwise fusion of old and new that has been the hallmark of Cosmic Bridge. Newer additions are also represented with DJ Madd and Jay Spaker's uplifting roller 'After Dark', J Kenzo's furious 'Skatta VIP', and TMSV's oppressive 'Send Them Come'. Rounding things off are four collaborations between label head Om Unit and Moresounds ('Nuff Music'), Fracture ('Chatting Breeze'), Distance ('Half The Battle'), and Kromestar ('Solar Cycle (Melody Mix)') that take in everything from lurking eyes-down riddim to breezy footwork and sweeping sci-fi meditation.

Cosmology Selections represents over five years of forward movement at the edges of electronic dance music, shining a light into the darkness for those who would follow. This selection represents some of the best of our bunch,' says Jim Coles, aka Om Unit. It's one for our fans, without whom we have nothing to talk about.'

Lewis James - Megacholy

Lewis James

Megacholy

12inchLOW024
Low Riders
15.02.2017

Exploring the tactility of bass from both the hip-hop and the DnB side you'll end up in a swirling lava stream with punchy basslines and tattered lost frail voices. Judo is the perfect example of this hip-hop and Drum & Bass fusion. As this track also showcases Lewis James' skill to combine theses unusual genres. Like sirens the voice snatches are seductive and suck you into the Megacholy. The gritty metal scrapes pierce the senses and the rousing synths are dripped with dystopian post apocalyptic Gotham. We love the world in alleys and post-industrial decay. With sparks of hope as in the alluring track Spiller.

Megacholy is a true Dazzle release. It has no limits, it's deep and imaginative. It combines breakbeat science with DnB precision, industrial grits and hip hop punch. Truly diverse and seductive.

Lewis James has already an interesting track record. As a multi-instrumentalist, and a producer he is known for his diversity. He has a Lowriders kinda taste for bass culture, hip hop, soul and electronics. Worked for TV, film, and the game industry. Collaborated with Lorn, Om Unit, Dolor and just recently with Amsterdam based producer Sleepin Giant on the Disco Noir release for the Cosmonostro label and with Know V.A. for our Beatitude 2 track.

Dazzle Series

For our Dazzle series this idea of confusion and delusion is combined with how we select the music: Confusing the listeners with preoccupation of style and genre and then turning the whole thing around, upside-down, playing with expectation.
It's about the tension between te compelling sound colors from Bass music, noise combined with whirring machinery to glossy rave synths and or RnB mash ups. In other words: using Gotham's sonic textures and crafts them into brand new, glistening disrupting collages. With Lowriders we're about those spaces in- between genres.

Gqom Oh!
13.02.2017

Art, of any kind, encompasses the unique and distinctive output of its creator: an inimitable human being. It points to a blueprint map of who this creator is, encapsulates their experiences and somehow points to how they arrive at their creation(s). This blueprint, although lending glimmer into one life, connects deeply into an unfathomable amount of other lives - lending an expression and effect. With this in mind, we go on a journey with Dowinowe - the first solo artist release for the Gqom oh! label - on his debut "GQOM004" Dominowe is a 19 year old producer from the Newlands east township of Durban, South Africa who started out making music just for his friends. This release snapshots important themes in his evocative personal journey - expressed in his own very unique style. Releasing on Vinyl in 27th of January 2017, the EP, titled SiyaThakatha', showcases Dominowe's original style in the context of the Durban electronic music scene especially when paced beside Gqom and Sghubu. The listener gets a real sense of his complexity and the variety of styles Dominowe is capable of producing. "SiyaThakatha", the EP name, is translated _black_ _magic,_ or, _we witching - _ which is right at the heart of this release: that listening to these sounds invite you into the universe of an unseen world, putting you in touch with what can only described as invisible energy - a combination of the ideal, the intangible, the unattainable and the other-worldly whilst on journey with a 19year old from Durban whose music is composed of influence and innovation. It is about gqom working its magic on the dance floor for people to move - to the distinctive beats and cultural rhythms. It features four tracks - including one skit outro - as well as three tracks on digital download. The tracks were chosen specifically as a reflection of the variety of styles Dominowe produces and the originality of his productions.

Letta - Redemption

Letta

Redemption

12inchCOYLP002
Coyote Records
31.01.2017

With much of his life shaped by long periods of addiction, homelessness and violence over the last 15 years, Letta — a complete unknown a little over a year ago — battled his demons to release one of 2015's most arresting debut albums, 'Testimony'. Then based in the notorious Skid Row district of Los Angeles, 'Testimony' communicated a lifetime of struggle through ambitious, grime-cum-rap beat abstractions that, although rough and scorn, were rooted in heavyset emotional trauma. This is just me channelling stuff - it's not beat making, it's not grime or hip hop or whatever, it's just me', Letta said after submitting the final tracklist in July 2015. Fast forward 12 months and with a whirlwind trip to the UK under his belt — he made his Boiler Room debut with Coyote in London only 24 hours after leaving North America for the first time — as well as lengthy US and Asia tours, plus a remix for WW WINGS on Geng's PTP label, Letta's breakthrough year has also seen him relocate from LA to first NYC and now, Canada. His second album for Coyote Records, 'Redemption', was written in stages over the course of this new-found trajectory throughout the early months of 2016 and although still bound by sadness, details a producer who has finally come to terms with his past. More song-based than 'Testimony' — see the stunning, mournful, 'She Does Die' featuring New York vocalist, Fielded, as a case in point — 'Redemption' also sees Letta work with producers outside the Coyote Records camp for the first time, with Ryan Hemsworth and Mr Mitch both appearing on the tracklist. There are flashes of anger and disdain in both title-track 'Redemption' — gritty, snarling instrumental grime — and the anthemic, 'You Were Wrong', that follow on from 'Testimony's emotional out-pouring, but 'Redemption' tells the second part of Letta's story with a deft and delicate hand. Where the first album was really about what I had been through, the dark times and times I longed to have', Letta explains, I think this one is about the friends that went through it all with me. This is a record for them.'

Jammz came up studying grime, and in 2016 finds himself at the forefront of it. Born and bred in East London, Jammz started to make a name for himself on London's radio circuit in 2014 and 2015, appearing regularly on Rinse FM, Radar Radio, NTS, Mode FM and BBC 1xtra and teaming up with both established DJs like Slimzee, Spooky, Bok Bok and Spyro and newcomers like Moleskin. His Hit Then Run EP became a cult classic: the title track was played regularly on BBC Radio 1Xtra and Noisey's #3 grime track of 2015, and the remix was Sian Anderson's #1 remix of the week six weeks on the spin. Subsequent singles 'Final Warning' and 'London Living' further established Jammz as one of grime's best new hit-makers, while his live reputation is also quickly on the rise: he's played Glastonbury, Eskimo Dance, Outlook, Night Slugs and Bestival, has headlined FWD>> and in March 2016 was the support act on Kano's UK tour. Jammz has been supported heavily by Fader, Noisey, FACT, GQ, Mixmag, SBTV, MTV and more, and featured on the front cover of the Observer Music's British MCs special. Following an instrumental 12' which sold out in four days, Warrior is the second EP on Jammz's I Am Grime label. Intense and frustrated, it encapsulates life in London in 2016 and marks Jammz's most complete and considered release to date. All tracks are also produced by Jammz, apart from 'What's Man Saying', produced by grime legend Ironsoul and featuring a guest verse by P Money.

This one needs no introduction. Trends & Boylan wrote an anthem with Norman Bates. Easily the biggest Grime instrumental this year, Norman Bates has been played and rewound time and time again at all of the years biggest shows. Massive radio support on 1Xtra, Radio One and Rinse FM, this is the tune that everyone has been after. On the flip we have individual tunes from the two producers. Boylan goes on an Orchestral workout with clarinets and strings providing the catchy riffs alongside classic square waves on Shimmy, another heavyweight Boylan track. Trends uses his signature robotic bass sounds matched with a dark moody choir on Octopus, a permanent freature in Slimzees sets this year.

Etch - The Cosmic B-boy Ep

Space. An infinity of possibilities to be explored. A potential refuge for future generations as our selfish and gluttonous society continues to indulge, expand and consume our current world

Who gives a shit.

That was just a faux-portentous, melodramatic and somewhat tenuously referencing attempt to grab your attention on account of Purple City Soufflé's maiden voyage coming hot 'n' fresh out the kitchen courtesy of Brighton based Space Cadet and all round lovely chap Etch.

The EP is called the Cosmic B-Boy EP. So you see There's that tenuous link we mentioned earlier.

We won't bother going overboard on the wanky track descriptions like most labels either as the audio is attached to this very press release (provided our PR girl isn't being a complete wastewomman) but basically it's six slices of some of the freshest, most psychedelic hip-hop out there at present, taking in influences as broad reaching and downright cutting edge as Kool Keith in his Doctor Octagon guise, Lil Flip in his bog standard stoned southern drawl and substandard lyric guise and Nigella Lawson in her Goddess who could quite realistically find a way to make you want to genuinely wank over a meat hammer guise.

The Cosmic B-Boy EP is suitable for both boys and girls. It is 100% organic, free range, has zero carbon footprint and sees Etch branch out into previously uncharted sonic territory (we could probably crowbar another space exploration / final frontier reference in there if we weren't writing this whilst trying to microwave a pastie.)

It's available on all half-decent streaming services and digital download (boring) or available on delicious purple vinyl with fully illustrated sleeves courtesy of the Burma Shave Construction Co. (Well good)

Dj Marfox - Revolunao 2005 - 2008

We're totally buzzed to present DJ Marfox's febrile retrospective Revolução 2005 - 2008 via the Boomkat Editions series.
Both a necessary document of Marlon Silva's early years and a crucial survey of Angolan kuduro's formative phase and mutation in the clubs of Lisbon, the set collects nine cuts
of contagious Afro-Portuguese dance music which maps strong parallels to the UK's own transition and flux between grime and UKF, whilst also demonstrating why Marfox is now regarded as the main ambassador and catalyst for Lisbon's colourfully influential and world-renowned style.
Taking his name from Nintendo's Starfox character (and establishing a trend for the -fox suffix so prevalent in kuduro and tarraxhina) DJ Marfox was instrumental in shaping one
of today's most vital dance scenes with a number of productions from his 17 year old self cropping up on ear-opening compilations such as the foundational DJs Do Guetto Vol.1 in 2006, and later on the Bazzerk - African Digital Dance Music set which turned a lot of DJs and dancers onto this sound.
He's subsequently released the 1st record on kuduro's best alibi, Príncipe, and followed Visionist and DJ Rashad to release on J-Cush's Lit City Trax, and has also appeared alongside his Lisbon crew on the Cargaa compilations for Warp Records.
However, this set returns to his wildest early years; from the hyper disco-techno drive of Funk em Kuduro or the galloping darkwave-riding horsepower of Un Bes Bai from 2006;
thru the killer jump-up downstroke of Sem Fronteiras or the inimitable, body-carving syncopation of Aiué Remix circa 2007-08, and his hollering A Própria with DJ Nervoso - which could almost be some ravenous Chicago house oddity - all of which illustrate the sound of a young producer firmly finding his feet and blazing a trail where others such as Arca, M.E.S.H. or Nidia Minaj would soon follow. Most of all though; it's a proper dance record for summer and beyond, either as DJ tools or the soundtrack to backyard raves, BBQs and beach parties.

In 2014 he released The Undertaker. This collaboration EP with Trends and Flirta D quickly gained the number one spot on the Juno Download chart and also sparked the interest of Spooky Bizzle and the godfather of Grime, DJ Slimzee. His beats also became favoured by MCs as they are played frequently on Rinse FM, Radar Radio and BBC 1Xtra. JLSXND7RS his Soundcloud profile is filled with radio rips with MC's such as Capo Lee, Nico Lindsay, Kwam, Rocks FOE, Skepta, Jammer and Wiley spraying their bars over his beats. Recently he released his co-produced EP The Undertaker Remixes on Reloadz and the Red State EP on DJ Spooky Bizzle's Ghost House Records. Killer 'nuum ballistics from Anthony J Hart (Imaginary Forces), back in Basic Rhythm mode with a trio of hungry hardcore mutations pressed loud and punchy AF for the DJs, with remix reinforcement/inversion from his North American alibi, Rabit.
Acting as if there was some unfinished business left over from his cracking Raw Trax LP, this platter acts as a sort of resolution; in-your-face proof that Hart is hurling out some of the fiercest reductions of UK rufige styles right now.Slewage is the run-off of 20 odd years in front of the bassbins and behind the decks on pirate radio and X amount of raves, like the residual effluence of jungle, dark garage and dubstep reanimated like some concrète golem that's gagging for a gary and a good mash up.The title track comes spoiling for it with speaker-worrying levels of scything halfstep patterns punctured by dancehall declamations, rinsing a paucity of elements for kernels of brutalist truth in a way that also provides the backbone to the ravenous slaughter of
Bombastic Plastic - a very strong nod to OG breakstep and DMZ's B - whilst The Curse rolls out at full stretch with scabrous proto-grime drums balanced by a skinny but crucial lick of pensive strings. On the remix Rabit goes into freefall mode, channelling Slewage into a mazy K-hole of masticated soundsystem samples and anti-peristaltic wretch that sounds sod all like the original, might as well be another OG Rabit ace.

Spooky And Boylan - Low Rider / All Black Winter

Our 14th release takes us to the darker side of the sound. Boylan has been the unsung hero of our label over the years- engineering and mixing down the majority of our releases and becoming a real architect of the foundations of our sound. Following his work with Edgem and general ubiquity on London's stations over the last year or so, it was only natural that he and Spooky found themselves in the studio together. Earlier this year they brought "Peckham To Hackney" to the second Boxed 12" and we thought they needed a release of their own. This 10" is the product of it. Low Rider starts the process. A malevolent take on the West Coast walking bassline style, we signed it before it was even a track - just a 4am 8-bar loop, haze and sub. After listening to that sparse 20 seconds on repeat for a while, they brought muscle to the skeleton - DJ Quik in Peckham. All Black Winter, meanwhile, takes their sound in a much harsher direction. Growling saws, gutteral strings and a brief morse code arpeggio meet violent gunshot snares and Boylan's bass science. One for the 2am rideouts, the double drop at 2:40. Dj Sinclair - Ricky / Gunman What

After Damu's epic weightless cassette, up next on Keysound Recordings is a grime white label from DJ Sinclair. Ricky' flips an iconic jungle ident over a dirty 8bar drop. The flip sees former Roll Deep and Dizzee-producer, Wonder's What' remade as a Wiley-style devil mix, with an explosion of Waifer gunshots and AMS bass to boot. The details around DJ Sinclair are indistinct. His Soundcloud handle is DJ Sinclair 2002,' but none of the grime OGs can remember him being about in those times. Mumdance, Logos, Spooky, Dusk + Blackdown, Kahn & Neek have been playing the release and Sinclair beats circulate amongst London's wider Boxed crew. Grandmixxer, Rinse FM and Novelist DJ, thinks he's the best newcomer' and videos have emerged of Grandmixxer completely losing his ish while dropping Sinclair beats at Outlook with Nov on the mic. What happened to DJ Sinclair We don't know but he just fires shots.

Silk Road Assassins - Deadcell / 3m Kunai

Silk Road Assassins release two of their most long sought-after tracks — 'Deadcell' and '3M Kunai'. 'Deadcell' — a bittersweet five minutes of abstract, trap euphoria — first emerged at the back end of 2014 and has since taken on mythical status online, with entire forum threads dedicated to rumours of its prospective release, while '3M Kunai' was the beat chosen by Chicago rapper Mikey Dollaz on early 2016 collaborative single, 'Commas'. Comprised of three producers, long-time Coyote signees Chemist and Tom E. Vercetti, and close friend Lovedr0id, Silk Road Assassins have taken cues from a shared appreciation of hip-hop beat-makers, Chicago drill and UK grime to create their own shadowy, cloaked, dystopian take on the music. Functional enough to work in or away from the club, their music has made Silk Road Assassins the defining artists in their field, with support from Kuedo, Om Unit, Commodo, Plastician and countless others suggesting that they are very much producers of the future.
