Since the release of their album Wonderland a couple of years ago, Demdike Stare have been recording material for this new doublepack Passion; an asymmetric re-imagining of UK club styles taking in frenzied drum trax, shortwave jungle, pinging dancehall and clipped, post punk riddims. During this time they've been busy curating their DDS label (inc releases from Shinichi Atobe, Mica Levi, Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe and Equiknoxx, among others) and have been commissioned by both the Groupe de Recherches Musicales (GRM) and the surviving members of Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza to mine and rework their archives. Enlisting visual artist Michael England (Autechre, Gescom, Leila), they've created a cinematic accompaniment for their collaborative live shows, resulting in the image which adorns this cover - a hybrid/composite portrait exploring/questioning the current use of software in creating hyper reality and the manipulation of the self. The accompanying film Includes documentary footage filmed at a Voguing event in NYC, Blackpool promenade and a Newark, New Jersey roller rink, the end result smudgng the lines between live performance, documentary and sonic cinema. It's an idea that's echoed on Passion, continuing a process Demdike began on their Testpressing series of dismantling lines between analogue and digital realms, between urban realism and fantasy, between experimental, pop and soundsystem cultures. An outlandish configuration of avant-garde and ultimately functional club weapons designed and honed for the weightiest bassbins, it's also their most direct and fucked up record to date - a raucous, joyful 9-track smash that comes off like a night on a glamorous, neon-lit bender.

The cherry on top: a gargantuan remix by sound wizard Hebbe, who's recent outings have found their way on to venerated imprints such as J:Kenzo's Artikal and Sleeper's Crucial Records.

As the needle hits the A-Side, we're being subjected to the transforming vision of modern sound system music, 'Wisdom' portrays a meditative journey of memorable chord stabs, surging low-end & conscious soundscapes. No frills, just sound - taking in subtle Breaks influences as it progresses through its exquisite arrangement. Off to the flip side the record is taking a turn for the darker side - pure, unadulterated low frequency tremors for inclined Dubstep heads all over. Boka Records unveils the label's 50th release, a major milestone! Recalled for service for the occasion is Chad Dubz who last appeared on the label late last year with his 22 Ounces EP, the track of the same name has now racked up over 100k streams via Spotify. Chad continues to make solid progress on this EP, building and improving on previous output. A producer to absolutely keep an eye on as we move forward into 2019.

'Back In The Box' sets the pace with swinging hats, thumping kicks and a bass line that will sound like an earthquake on the right system! Follow up for 'Herbie' which takes things in dissonant direction, before dropping hard and with authority.

Flip then for the EP title track, an exploration around the paranoid edges of a creative mind, stretched to capacity. Finally the EP closes up with 'Perfunktion', a rolling rhythm with a lighter mood, somewhat reminiscent of Mala circa 2006. Confunktion Records own Mr. Confuse returns with his fifth studio album 'Only A Man'.

This album is about the depths of Mr. Confuse and therefore a very personal album in a way. From well-known soul topics of love and hate to social issues of modern life - this album is all about an odyssey through time, rhythm and music.

Times of big studio personals are long gone so a big part of creating this album was the imagination what kind of instruments, musicians and sound design is wanted. With up to 16 international musicians, Mr. Confuse created incredible sounding big arrangements.

The way Mr. Confuse produces his music is inspired by growing up with the 90s hip hop producer technique of creating something new by referring unheard funk and soul. This from of appreciating 60s and 70s music in order to bring it on a new level of musical expression is a clear trademark of Mr. Confuse.

The process of sampling and resampling recorded musicians creates an organic, powerful, authentic and danceable funk sound, which can be heard in each and every second on this record.

Twisting electro funk from the 80s into heavy 60s and 70s funk that could have been the blue print for the original version became a true Mr. Confuse feature already years ago. This time he re-funked the well-known freestyle electro classic 'Let The Music Play' by Shannon.

Also one of the reasons it's entitled 'Only A Man' is because it means composing, producing, arranging, mixing, recording, organising, promoting and going abroad preforming by just one 'man'.

This album, as the title would suggest, is two (wall breaking and out there) artists/producers coming together - Youth: highly respected music producer, sonic pioneer and founder & bassist of Killing Joke and Gaudi: international dance floor rocker and maverick producer of note. Two bass leviathans duelling their way through sci-fi, psychedelic dub space ....and the resulting album is truly a lesson in synergy.

Astronaut Alchemists was made the purists way; the album was recorded over two years, each session was done together in the studio, face to bass, heating the metal of inspiration and pouring and shaping it as it flowed. As Gaudi said of the recording process, 'something organically surfaced since the beginning of our studio sessions: the chemistry. Chemistry is vital when you work in the studio with another artist, it's that magic thing that you can't really study'. It's amazing, with the schedule that they both keep, that it only took 2 years to coordinate the required studio sessions! The album features Youth on bass, Gaudi on Keyboards and they are both responsible for programming and production. The album was engineered and mastered by Jamie Grashion (AKA Cosmic Trigger) and will be released by Liquid Sound Design.

Setting sail to the east, 'Eagle Eye' envelopes us in a sense of Asian mystery attached to cinematic drums. Infused with copious amounts of echoing space, a sense of mystique advances. Faint vocal chants chime through nebulous winds as one last statement sends the soundscape into utter frenzy. Cutting right down to the chase, fierce strings lead the way through the nefarious scenery, taking no prisoners as the cut-throat percussion settles any and all disputes. Switching over to the B-Side, the ethereal expanse gives way to yearning brass melodies, hazy groove afar. 'Old Scratch' fires up a vocal fragment before lunging into a no-holds-barred shutdown scenario. No covert operation as delightfully overdriven 808's pound every last molecule in your vicinity. Abundant dynamics both in micro- and macro-arrangement, meticulously crafted to perfection. Swerving off into contemplation for a breather only to lunge right back into infernal madness. Stripped down to its vital core, the soundscape irreproachably asserts itself with full force.

US production duo Alter Echo & E3 have linked up with Bristol's Ishan Sound to create an awe- inspiring warrior stance anthem. Ah Mi Guide features a hypnotic sample from Rider Shafique, over an unrelenting beat crafted by E3 and Ishan then mixed in dub by Alter Echo. The flipside remix comes via ascendant dubstep producer Egoless, who transforms the stark original into a slow burning fire, garnished with a flourishing flute refrain. Either side is guaranteed to shake up and mesmerise a dance!

INIT's music has the rare quality of transforming bleakness into a soothing experience. In the duo's new EP, 'Wildcard', this mechanism is more intense than ever. And that might be because of the particular circumstances that surrounded its inception. Two years ago, Nadia D'Alo and Benedikt Frey decided to move from Darmstadt to Berlin. Adjusting to a rough area of a big city when coming from a quiet town necessarily brings a change of perspective. For Nadia and Benedikt, that meant experiencing the city life as outsiders while trying to figure out what they wanted from it.'Wildcard' is the sonic result of this process, and proof that changes always bring growth. Recorded in their new home studio during winter, the six tracks on the EP are as haunting as their previous LP for Hivern, but with a rawer approach and enhanced power. Take 'Cover' and 'Solver', an approximation to the kind of moody psych-techno they display in their live-shows and two of the most dance floor oriented tracks INIT have recorded to date. But it's the title track which best expresses the mindset of this work. With its skeletal rattle and undulating synths, 'Wildcard' feels as desolate as a Berlin street in a winter night, but possesses the kind of focus that turns uncertainty into hope. In a similar way, cuts such as 'Copycat' or 'Half Baked' perfectly capture the sort of estrangement -daunting yet hopeful- that comes when moving into a new place, with its slow tempos mirroring the cautious pace of a foreigner and the intoxicated atmospheres calmly distilling the essence of a new environment. Nadia and Benedikt describe this new habitat as small kids on big bikes, eating dry instant noodles, playing with what's to find on the streets, static aircraft traffic closely over our heads and constant running engines. Listening to the music that arose from it, it's obvious that, once again, they've been able to overturn apparently hostile elements into a place were you'd want to stay forever.
