Lee Scratch Perry - Nu Sound & Version 2x12"

Rush-released on LP following huge demand for the CD version, 'On-U Sound Presents Lee Scratch Perry Nu Sound And Version' - to give it it's full title - contains reworked, remixed and re-interpretated versions of 12 Adrian Sherwood-produced Lee Perry classics, including one extra bonus mix only available on this double vinyl pressing. Reggae legend Lee 'Scratch' Perry first began working with On-U Sound in the late 1980s. Initially working with Style Scott's Dub Syndicate rhythm section, he then collaborated with Adrian Sherwood on 'Time Boom X De Devil Dead' in 1987 and 'From The Secret Laboratory' in 1990. He would return to the label in 2008 to release 'The Mighty Upsetter' and it's companion-piece 'Dub Setter'. The tracks on this album see Lee Perry receive some of the most radical treatment his work has ever had, as his distinctive vocals bob and weave in the midst of bass, rave riddims and extreme experimentation fashioned from the imaginations of some of today's most cutting-edge, dub-influenced producers. Newly commissioned versions by Bullion, Congo Natty, Dialect & Kosine, and Adrian Sherwood make their exclusive debut appearances here, alongside productions plucked from the sought-after series of limited 12's by Kode9, Mala of Digital Mystikz, Moody Boyz, Horsepower Productions, and Pempi. All original recordings produced by Adrian Sherwood.

Da Grynch Ft Macka B, Massicker, Blackout Ja & Askala Selasie - The Gorilla Ep

Necessary Mayhem producer Curtis Lynch aka Da Grynch has come up with another musical masterpiece with a new riddim named The Gorilla, probably the strongest beat the label has unleashed so far, charged with a super heavy bass line and crushing drums. The line-up of artists who have vocalled on The Gorilla reads like the who's-who of the current reggae industry, and a series of 7' plates will be issued following this 12' featuring Tarrus Riley, Franz Job, Ziggi, Omar Perry, Tippa Irie, Cali P, Mr Williamz, and Chucki Starr. For the opening EP, roots star Macka B - known for his MC deejay style - singjays on 'Our Music' with a message to his neighbour explaining why his music is so loud. On the flip, Massicker, Blackout JA & Askala Selasie join forces at the mic on the self-evident proclamation 'Proud To Be Rasta', and both cuts come armed with cone-testing dubs courtesy of Da Grynch. This four-part selection is most certainly made with the conscious-reggae bass-bin massive in mind.

Instinct / Killa & Instinct - Revolt / Drones Remix

Founded early in 2011, Orientis Records aims to introduce new deeper and emotive dimensions to dubstep and other bass musics, by working with artists already breaking the surface, and seeking out underplayed talents deserving of the limelight. For their third release, Orientis welcomes the Bristol based duo Killa and Instinct. Over the last year this duo has sculpted their own unique deep, dark and minimal sound, similar to the early foundation sounds of dubstep, making a heavy impact in the scene and gaining support and recognition from a wide range of DJs. A side 'Revolt' is a solo production by Instinct; starting with a unique distorted kick drum sound that rolls along with sparse percussion and spacious metallic re-verbs, the tune then drops into some pure heavy weight sub, accompanied by ghostly choral atmospherics and scattered percussion rhythms guaranteed to get the body moving in any room. On the flip is Killa & Instinct's remix of Orientis label owner Thelem's 'Drones', which twists up the original with the use of crashing claps and sparse percussion, a hard-hitting pulsating sub, and droning sci-fi atmospherics.

Laxx - The Laxx Ep

Biscuit Factory Records presents The LAXX EP, the debut release from Oxford based producer Jamie Churchill, aka LAXX. The EP features three tracks that highlight why LAXX is unquestionably going to be an artist to look out for in the future. The EP leads with Warning. A Cinematic intro, layered with subtle hats and trademark sirens descend unsuspectingly into a drop that is guaranteed to send dance floors into mayhem Devastating subs and punchy drums, this is true, chest crushing Dubstep. Self Destruct is a clever combination of melodic and soulful sounds, poles apart from the A-side. An emotive and atmospheric keyboard pattern provides the riff, while dark, moody, sub stabs combine with catchy percussion to produce a full on roller of a track. Aggressive, industrial synths sit perfectly over distinct and heavy hitting drums in the track Transmission. This is another taste of LAXX's ability to produce classic dubstep sounding tracks, twisted with his unique and futuristic sounds. Favourite of DJ N Type (Wheel and Deal/ Rinse FM), Walsh (Biscuit Factory) and getting played by the likes of Benga (Radio 1), The Others and Subscape (Dub Police), Biscuit Factory Records proudly introduce LAXX.

Magnum - All Over Me Ep

Magnum

All Over Me Ep

12inchPNTS002
92 Points
16.01.2012

After the widespread success of PNTS001 (Visionists Mr. 67), the South London based imprint returns with another hard hitter in Magnums All Over Me E.P. Fresh from recent moves on Nightshifters, Gradient Audio, Soukouch Ethnik and Inhale including a remix of Canblaster, the Puerto Rican producer has quickly built up much notoriety in his home country and is beginning to develop a following in the UK with numerous plays from Rinse FMs Scratcha DVA and Randomer. The title track of this latest excursion is as much a robust 808/909 dance floor mover as it is an all out, arms in the air, hairs on the back of your neck serotonin overload. Its winding arpeggiated synths, lush pads, and tear-jerking vocals show Magnum to be an artist of meticulous attention to detail. On the b-side, Dense is a straight up banger. Crafty bass deployment, rustic synth chords and informed jungle referencing all contribute to what has got to be one of the hardest hitting tracks this winter. Also on the b is the French Fries remix of Dense. As we all know anything the Parisian touches turns to gold and this is no exception. Taking Magnums original concept and stripping it back he adds a touch of grime into the melting pot, à la Slimzee sets circa 2001, and deals with the low end as only one of the finest bass operators would.

The Phantom - Ep2

Ep2

12inchSIL010
16.01.2012

After almost 2 years of serving slices of their idea on cutting edge house music on a solely digital basis, the belgian Silverback Recordings now releases its first vinyl... On 'EP 2 polish producer The Phantom demonstrates he's a master at creating a soulful, genre-bending, futuristic blend, whilst paying homage to rich Chicago, UK garage, and Detroit traditions, to name but a few. On the A-side 'Ceremony' starts off on a smooth hip hop flavored tip, before brilliantly building bridges to piano driven house. 'Gothic' holds tight to hybrid thoughts with its melodically mutant, starry-eyed take on grime. The B-side sees an ever-escalating 'Voyeur' balancing a fine line between languid safe havens and the abyss of syncopated chaos. The Phantom affirms he's in control though, as he steps back a few paces on 'Colossus', and serves funked up, eighties evoking, electronic jams as a discursive ender to this trippy four-tracker. Highly acclaimed and limited to 300 12 copies. Support by Ikonika, Hackman, Canblaster, French Fries, Teki Latex, Round Table Knights, Dubbel Dutch, Brenmar, Lol Boys, Blackwax, Optimum, Chaos in the CBD, Lil Silva, Martelo,...

Kowton V Dusk - Kowton V Dusk Ep

The Kowton v Dusk EP is another milestone on the M4 bass exchange: a dialogue between England's two most sub-saturated cities, Bristol and London. Capital-based Dusk and West Country-resident Kowton contribute three tracks in total: Dusk's 'Fraction', Kowton's 'Looking At You', and Kowton's remix of 'Fraction'. Kowton's production career began in a different guise, as Narcossist, inspired by dark, skunked out '04 Youngsta sets. As his style would mutate into Kowton, finding the slow house grooves he currently inhabits, he would carry with him a common sense of edgy Metalheadz-esque dread. His debut release on Keysound Recordings, 2009's 'Countryman' / 'Stasis (g mix)' blended this dark edge with Basic Channel's sense of space and UK garage's swing. 2011 has been his most prolific year, seeing collaborations with Peverelist and Tom Dicicco as well as releases on Teal Recordings, Naked Lunch and Bristol's much hyped Idle Hands. As for his contributions to this EP, 'Looking At You' inhabits the space between house, UK funky and dubstep, while his re-fit of Dusk's 'Fraction' is a masterclass in offbeat percussion and evolving groove. 'How underrated is Dusk' rhetorically enquired Fact Mag recently. 'He doesn't release much, but 2008's 'Focus' has to rank as one of the finest moments in the dubstep canon. 'Fraction' is... a definite highlight.' Dusk is one half of production duo and Rinse FM DJs Dusk + Blackdown. He co-owns Keysound Recordings and co-produced the duo's acclaimed 2008 debut album 'Margins Music'.

Gerry Read / 23hz & Numaestro - Roomland

Sometime you can't keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music. First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta's Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry's original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read's killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour. On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro's original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it's release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

Kowton & Tom Dicicco - Untitled Ep

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton's seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom's music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other's originals on the other. Tom Dicicco's original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton's is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along. On the other side of the record, Kowton's remix of Tom's original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom's remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London
