Dj Cra$y (breach Remixes) - Just E / I Need You

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made 'Fatherless' a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh's Dad's house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked 'music.' He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks 'Just - E' and 'I Need You' are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions... These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

Arguably the most popular track on 2562's stunning 'Fever' album, 'Aquatic Family Affair', was only available on its cd version and a highly limited 10 lp sampler. Due to overwhelming demand for the track on wax here it is again in full glory, extended and re-cut. Half reissue, half remix 12', the flip has the mighty Head High aka Shed giving his favourite albumtrack 'Wasteland' the Powerhouse™ remix treatment, slow-building and boombastic as only he can. Afrikan Boy - Kunta Kinte / Eba Eater

2 tracks from the MC that brought you 'Lidl' and was guest vocalist on MIA's Paper Planes remix that went into the US Top 5. He's been around the world, finished his degree, guested on DJ Shadow's 'I'm Excited' and is getting ready to break out properly on his own. This is a taster for his mini album that is coming very soon, two tracks that take him in two very different directions. Kunta Kinte is a classic slice of funky, South African inspired house/ garage. With a strong lyrical message AB takes it back to the time when MC's had something to say other than how fly they were (not that he isn't and he will do some of those). Produced by Dan Anderson from Nu Sound Therapy. The tune is HOT ! Eba Eater is a quality slice of African hip hop produced by LA's Twofifteens. It bounces !

Last year was huge for young producer Marco Giuliani AKA Last Japan. With 'Qi' garnering huge support from industry and his remix of Crystal Fighters 'Xtatic Truth' appearing on TV series Skins Last Japan went on to release two further records on Southern Fried and gain mass support from the likes of Radio 1's Toddla T and DJ Target. 2011 and the rising star continues on the up and releases 'Settle Down/Girl featuring Bobbie Gordon' on Four40 Recordings. 'Settle Down' combines the heartfelt lyrics of Gordon as Last Japan's drawn out chord sequences squirm over a powerful and pushing sub bass; sterling remixes come from Bondax, Asa and Stumbleline. Second track 'Girl' speeds things up as a highly electronic concoction of bleeps form the captivating high end while more rumbling sub bass echoes below for depth.

25.07.2011

Kapsize is very proud to present our next release from none other than international dubstep superstar - BENGA! A man who should need little introduction - Benga has been famously instrumental in shepherding dubstep music from its inception almost 10 years ago, right through to the global phenomenon it has become now. Having stormed the charts and festivals recently as one third of the mighty Magnetic Man, Benga is still able to walk a delicate tightrope - consistently providing us with credible underground dancefloor music with an accessible edge. The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, 'Faithless' and 'Acid Lie', exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one's cool. So onto the music... 'Faithless' has been a staple of Joker's sets for several months now - a solid power anthem of a tune. Building up initially with a 4/4 kick pattern and fast chopping cyber samples, 'Faithless' soon introduces a Prodigy-esque riff - something that sonically sits between a distorted guitar sample and futuristic synth sound - before laying down the sub-heavypressure of the full drop. A massive club tune by even Benga's own standards! Flip then for the equally excellent 'Acid Lie' which leads with a looping, low-slung and sleezy live bass line - think something from the soundtrack to Kill Bill or Snatch, warning the imminent presence of some bad dudes! Rising textures bring in the leading acid riff line which continues to morph dynamically over the thundering sub bass. A retro rave reference with a very futuristic twist - one for the heads and the ravers alike!

Transport Ep

05.12.2011

Om Unit returns with 'Transport' a four track EP of blissful, instrumental, mechanical soul. Transport's strength lies in the leeway afforded to the listener, rewarding patience and immersion, the EP allows those that truly engage to digest and appreciate it's many qualities and those of it's persistently excellent creator. Transport showcases both exceptional production and creative excellence, yet never does form displace method or vice versa. The eminence of 'Transport' is echoed in its remixers; revered producers Machinedrum and Ital Tek both contribute revisions to this astonishing package. Transport opens with 'Swimming Dragon'. A rigid percussive structure underpins an array of howling synths that surround harmoniously before multiplying into a haunting cinematic workout. Then just as the listener is fully enclosed, Om Unit manipulates the flux and flow, teleporting you into another realm where low end frequencies and floating spatial atmospherics spin faster and draw ever tighter. The dream-like 'Eternal Way' continues in similar vein, heavenly vocal samples float on waves of skittering, energetic percussion. A poignant piano interjects, providing an enlightening succession that reinforces the enchanting ethereal nature of the track. 'Vibrations' contrasts a rough bassline and rounded percussion with the airy atmosphere that contains them. Imploding toms and lone delayed snares are the order of the day while a lazy bassline strolls over the top. Echoing, soulful synths overlap each other, reaching ever higher as the track climaxes. 'Cold World' enforces a swinging off-centre tempo, resonating, reflecting synths emerge, followed closely by modulated keys and glistening atmosphere. 'Fuck the ghetto, think about space' Rounding up the package are 2 excellent remixes. Machinedrum delivers a footwork rework of 'Vibrations' that ups the energy levels and warps the bassline into a much darker, foreboding being. While Ital Tek adds sinister overtones to his take on 'Swimming Dragon'. Calculated and ominous in it's approach it loses none of the spacious atmospherics that are essential to the track. Captivating strings are added to the mix to create a well-rounded piece of ambitious proportions.

Bass Clef - Reeling Skullways Cd

Following a busy year of stylistically varied releases under various guises on his own Magic + Dreams label, Ralph Cumbers delivers his first long-player for Punch Drunk. With a title lifted from the lysergic prose of a Brian Aldiss novel and grooves informed by the loopier, more Martian aspects of Chi-town jack and Detroit techno-soul, 'Reeling Skullways' marks a subtle, but highly alluring development in the evolution of Cumbers' primary recording project. Long-term Bass Clef fans may be surprised by the lack of samples on this album, and in many ways it follows a similar creative process to his recent work as Some Truths, with most rhythms and textures sculpted from the raw, elemental waveforms of modular analogue synthesis. But with tighter editing, contagious melodies and perfectly positioned drum patterns, the end results reveal Bass Clef simultaneously at his most stripped-back, focused, playful, complicated, emotional and irresistibly groovy. Unfettered by fashionable production tricks, imbued with a timeless machine-soul heart, 'Reeling Skullways' is one of those albums you'll be reaching for again and again.

This is the one. This is the summer tune of 2011. Skream Annie Mac & Nick Grimshaw have all been building the hype Hackman's epic title track Close. Probably one of the best pieces of, bass driven vocal dance music this year. Cheekily sniping the Alicia Keys acapella from 'No One' and employing the pitching down technique Hackman compliments the vocal riff with layers of heavily clapped out garage breakbeats, and tops it off with a euphoric, futuristic grime bassline that rolls out like an Atlantic breaker. It's not just close, it's perfect - and it's another effortlessly curated release from Greco-Roman.

Kelpe - I Felt Fuzzy Ep

For a label with a reputation for releasing new artists and debuts (Teebs, BNJMN under his Jackhigh alias, Nightwave, Brey) Kelpe is something of a veteran signing for Svetlana. In fact, years before anyone tried to give the style a name - remember 'wonky' - Kelpe was dropping the beats with his first EP on DC Recordings way back in 2003, and a year later an album that The Wire called 'one of the most engrossing listens in recent electronic music'. After three albums and a bunch of EPs he started to release more widely, including a belter of an EP for Black Acre which got on many end of year top tens. This was followed by a great remix for BNJMN on his 141 EP on Svetlana, so it seems like a fitting progression for the label to be finally be releasing one of his own records. His productions are known for being tough and direct, and he's one of the few beats artists able to fill and hold a dancefloor, and his live show is justly popular as a result. 'I Felt Fuzzy' is something of a new direction for Kelpe, the strong title track already attracting enthusiasm from Boiler Room among others. It combines his usual solid electronic 4/4 platform with a light airy organic feel and a chopped ethereal female vocal, redolent of springtime and sunshine. 'Cola Mine' brings a darker flavour for track 2, building by stacking up layer on layer of fat analogue synth with a slightly despondent air. The quirky synth solo is reminiscent of Plaid for their unsual yet catchy melodies, and the tune is funny and serious at the same time. 'Frosty Kiss' begins with serious intent. Hissing gas in place of high hats, a mechanical forward motion, a heavy trembling synth bass monotone, then 40 seconds in it launches into classic Kelpe banger - a heavy 100bpm beat, with a beautiful evolving elegiac melody on top, exciting, happy and sad, all at the same time, like the best Aphex tunes. Next up is the vinyl exclusive BNJMN renix of 'Cola Mine'. BNJMN's star has risen rapidly in the last 18 months, with two albums for Rush Hour and a bunch of EPs. It might be forgotten that he made his first record for Svetlana under the name Jackhigh, and followed up with a popular download EP in June 2011 for which Kelpe provided a remix. Here he returns the favour with a dreamy laid back take on Kelpe's tight original. Following that, comes 'I Felt Fuzzy' (Cupp Cave Remix) ... Belgium's Cupp Cave has been growing in stature recently, releasing under his own name and using the alias Ssaliva for more abstract releases, including on LA's Leaving Records, and he'll also be releasing with Svetlana's imminent spin-off label, Woetone. His remix is a radical rework, tapping into the kind of sludgy amorphous house sound that Lukid has been championing, at the very edge of current electronic music evolution. The EP closes with 'I Felt Fuzzy' remixed again, this time by Naïve Machine, a production duo fresh on the scene who have delivered an undeniable banger. Already attracting heavy spins from Om Unit among others, it's a burbling melodic feast with the kind of fizzing glucose energy extolled by Rustie and Hud Mo at the their finest.

22.12.2011

When De Niro and Y met Estel Luz, they were already working on a simple melody, as usual, using a sample (this time from an old italian song by Piero Ciampi), who nothing have to share with dubstep stuff. Gold: a smooth and catchy bassline, a sweet garage hint completed by a great vocal by Estel Luz, telling us the story of an upperclass girl that loses all of a sudden her social power and identity, walking straight towards the naked truth, her new life and new skin.
The story becomes deeper and darker with a stunning Jack Sparrow Remix.

Supported by: Pinch, Jack Sparrow, J:Kenzo, Youngsta, Bratski Krug, Epitome, Nhertz, Dropfellas, Dj Foster, NumaCrew and many more.

Perverse - The Iceman / Submerge

PERVERSE make their debut for Artikal Music UK and craft out 3 deep, dark and dangerous cuts. The Iceman is the lead track from the release. Moody atmospehic pads and vocals set the tone followed by Dark staggered growls accompanied with a chest rattling sub bass on the drop. The Iceman has been a certified favourite with many of the top selectors and is clearly a smasher that has been devastating dubstep dances across the globe. Submerge takes a step back with merely a teaser of mid-range distortion before the tune busts out with reese-style bass sounds and 'stop and go' percussion. The atmosphere is tense, set in a large, dark room - drone sounds linger in the background as if you were staring in the face of a killing machine currently in a state of lethargy, a light the only sign that it's still active. This tune could make your blood run hot and the hair on your neck stand up.

There seems to be a real buzz around Dom Tarasek aka Commodo over the last few months following on from the underground rumblings of his last single 'Uprising' released at the end of 2011. Much speculation has been made about his forthcoming releases on various forums and we are very happy to bring it to you in the form of 'The Northern Soul' EP. In a tough time for Dubstep Commodo takes all what is good about the music we love and leaves the filler behind. Starting with a stripped back skeletal frame of the 140 tempo sketched out Commodo creates and builds a unique style around these bare bones, which in these times is refreshing to hear and unfortunately few and far between. His distinct approach can be heard on all four of the tracks featured on this EP. His trademark syncopated, shuffling tribal rhythms and percussion run heavily throughout these productions, this in turn creates a real sense of darkness and space whilst keeping the all to much forgotten funk and swing of Dubstep alive, add to this the movement Commodo creates with his slick basslines and a healthy dose of Hip Hop attitude which creates an uncontrollable reaction to move, shuffle and skank where ever you're listening. After listening to this EP we'll sure you can see why there has been much talk about this new producer hailing from Sheffield.

Jimmy Edgar - This One's For The Children

After a two-year break, Detroit producer and wayward star-child Jimmy Edgar debuts on Scuba's Hotflush Recordings armed with an album full of futuristic sleaze. Known for his unique take on jacking house and electro funk, he's recently been splitting his time between the US and Berlin, exploring transcendental meditation and the boundaries of the non-physical. This offering is an extension of that journey, bringing eleven tracks of erotic robo-pop to the table. Titled Majenta, this LP is a departure from his past sound, marking a shift in his own ever-expanding consciousness, as well as another exciting chapter of his musical career. Each track is an aural manifesto, giving well-deserved nods to his varied musical influences. Close encounters with Detroit legends Derrick May and Juan Atkins, Jimmy's 2004 signing to Warp Records, and his early exposure to Kraftwerk have all acted as lynchpins in the cultivation of his sound. With a number of releases on Glasstable, Semantica, Nonplus and long player releases on both Warp and !K7, Majenta reflects Jimmy's evolution as both artist and child of the cosmos. According to Edgar, the making of the album was steeped in countless synchronicities, continuously reminding him he was on the right path. In contrast with his last LP, XXX, for !K7, which took five years to make, Majenta is more raw, more spontaneous and in his words, 'more futuristic ... than my other music, which played a lot with retro, especially R&B.' From the outset, Jimmy's flexing his Kraftwerkian muscle, with vocoder complimenting his own unadulterated voice and '80s synthlines bubbling away alongside jazz-funk keyboard riffs. From the raunchy and sexually explicit 'Take Me on a Sex Drive' ('windows down, legs up high') to the low-lit, hypnotic feel of 'Attempt to Make it Last', to the UK garage rhythms of 'Let Yrself Be', to the Kiss-era Prince vibe of 'I Need Your Control', it's clear that the postmodern is Edgar's domain. The Frampton-esque vocals of 'In Deep' close out the LP and further cement his enviable place in the intergalactic community. Spring/Summer 2012 will see Jimmy playing a number of live shows across Europe and the US in support of Majenta (including major festivals such as Glade, UK), as well as his continued exploration into the world of LEDs and synchronized light technology.

Keiren featured on the Bristol rise up special with Mary Ann Hobbs on BBC radio 1 and can be found DJ'ing across the globe. Komazmuk 'Underground is my take on B Boy styles, when I started to write the track I already had the vocal in my head, this helped on building the rhythm and melody. Growing up listening & playing on pirate radio was the main link to the samples, in respect to how pirate radio has had a big roll within UK underground music, I knew as soon as the track was complete what kinda remix i was after. Paul's remix is exactly that. A percussive Stripped back, moody full of bass workout. Pretty much as far underground as you can go.'

"Sex" is a case in point, warm, witty and infectious, with enough going on in its trunk to keep you moving. Remix duties are taken care of by US-Edwardian Daedelus, who manages to insert a little of his own-brand hazy sunshine into proceedings, before Groundislava (straight outta the Cali glitch-hop scene) turns the tune into the sad scene from a video game about a lovelorn washing machine
