This March will see the release of 'Fringe In The Box #1', a project born out of the Fringe stage at Torino's Jazz Festival. The first in a series of vinyl releases sees input from Hugo, TBoy, Andrea Ferlin and
Brandumize featured.

The people behind the project tell us FRINGE is 'Fringe In The Box is the newest feature of the 2013 Torino Jazz Festival. The Box is curated by the musicians, producers and Turin-based DJ's, Ugo Basile and Francesco Pistoi in conjunction with the artistic curator of FRINGE Furio di Castri, the concept stems from the desire to chart a new path of interaction and exchange between the world of jazz and that of electronic music'. The pieces featured on this record are produced using samples of the live instrumental recordings made by renowned jazz musicians in Turin, which is at the heart of the project. These recordings were then sent to the aforementioned producers who then created the resultant intriguing material by deconstructing, modifying and reassembling the pieces.

Opening the 'Fringe In The Box #1' is the heart-wrenching ambient soundscapes of 'Take 1' by Brandumize, who skillfully blends soft, cosseting pads with glitching electronic noises and rumbling sub bass. While shimmering sax licks subtly flutter around the foundations, and lo-fi broken rhythms instill a further intelligent and forward thinking appeal to the composition. Following we have Trapez / Contexterrior artist, Andrea Ferlin's 'Take 2', as expected from such a proficient and talented producer, Ferlin delivers a raw stripped-back workout fuelled by organic Tabla rhythms, bulbous sub-bass tones, and modulating synthesized atmospherics. Again creating something refreshing to listen to and sparklingly unique as the record gradually unfolds over nine minutes brilliantly.

Then we have Hugo's 'Take 3' on the B-Side, which steps things up a notch with a more upfront feel, bringing rolling organic percussion to the forefront alongside funk guitar licks, dubby echoes, improv saxophone recordings and sweeping synth chords. Giving off an almost dissonant vibe yet so intricately constructed to do so that it again makes for an undeniably invigorating listen. And last up to close the record is TBoy's 'Take 4', the Hot Waves producer puts his contemporary spin on things by cleverly chopping up finite snippets of the recordings and remodeling the chops into a modern, low-slung house number embodying a raw beauty, yet maintaining a rugged dance floor appeal.

Fontarrian's debut effort for Berlin-based label ANTIME offers a glimpse into a fragile yet eclectic spectrum consisting of loopy vocal bits, slowly unwinding washes of dream-like ambience, distinctively (s)tumbling almost jazzy percussions and an ever-present, blissful warmth. The latter emanates from and sucks you into what seems to be a world of its own. Like a lo-fi attempt at capturing momentary twists of the heart through 10 significantly diverse tracks - imperfect nonetheless - the album feels like a mixtape you've set out to record for someone special, but somehow never got around to.

Jimi Tenor and Nicole Willis´ sublime Herakles label returns with 'Haunted by Hallucinations' , the new Bandproject from Petri Tokkannenm mastermind of the fabolous finish 'Soul Investigators' group. Guitarist Petri Toikkanen, who graces the liner notes of nearly all the Soul Investigators ("Home Cooking", 'Keep Reachin' Up") releases, as one of the formidable composers of the musical group, makes the debut on this self titled new band´s album. The group was founded by Toikkanen and drummer Laura Könönen as they composed their songs through hypnotic jam sessions, with bass player, Jussi Oskari. Jussi Oskari is best known for his contribution to the project, Tuvalu, a progressive rock ensemble. The genre that sets the tone for Haunted by Hallucinations is the psychedelic cousin to that of post metal and post rock/doom. Toikkanen cites Pink Floyd, Venom, Uriah Heep, and Dio as his childhood staples. While direct influences are denied, Haunted By Hallucinations might sit well next to Earth and Goblin. That the phasers and flangers of stoner doom would be replaced with heavy doses of delay on Toikkanen's personal genre of neo - psychedelia. Toikkanen's playing has textures of surf, harking the legend of surf, Dick Dale, together with a prototype of Rock & Roll. Toikkanen's main instrument is a Fender Jazzmaster. Oskari also plays Moog Taurus bass pedal synthesizer. Laura Könönen is also a visual artist, whose main medium is sculpture, has supplied the LP cover artwork with one of her paintings and drawings. On her new album All Love's Legal, she leaves you in no doubt as to the seriousness of her vision of transnational gender equality. Surprisingly, given that Western dance music is born out of black, queer music, it rarely touches upon these themes, but All Love's Legal is a refreshingly direct statement of political intent.

Salvatore Stallone is a DJ since 1974, forty years of experience in the best Clubs and idol in the "off parties" of Ibizan's circuit. In this work for Strictly Groove Records, he puts on pretty much all his artistic background and proves he has nothing to envy anyone. From the charming Deep House and a bit tropical (Voice From Juno) to a sort of Downtempo with the broken rhythm into fragments combined with jazzy inserts (Silvia 's Element II) via lightning Funk (Where Is My Island) and renewing interest in the 4/4 revived by the warmth of the percussion (Slight Tension). Stallone is one who likes to impress, and he succeeds in full with (Possibility Of Dialogue) from which emerge more clearly his talents as a composer, tied as much to jazz to funk. The same elements are intelligently reflected in (Night In Oslo) till it flows first into a beloved Disco, launched on a drawing that resembles Cerrone's Extended Mix (One Night In Rome With Herbie) and then in a sublime example of Future Jazz (The Travel). The "question" in the album's title certainly does not refer to the contents of the record: everything here seems exquisitely perfect.

The silver disc starts with - Voices (In My House)' by the British heroes Benbo & Tide Mark and - Besoin De Recul' by Pat Lezizmo from Belgium, followed by songs from artists like Florzinho, Smooth Deluxe and Sterling. Enigmatic takes as safely through the night and Paulsen & Stryczek set Winnetou´s journey to space to music. Relaxing moments by Mashti & Jean Von Baden, Phonokinetics and Chris Coco follow. Natural Self is on board with his ballad 'In A World', as well as Clelia Felix, Polished Chrome and Jens Buchert. At the end of the CD the Basement Freaks serve a slow funk monster. RE-ENGINEERING is the bold new album from Heatsick, aka Berlin based British artist Steven Warwick. Well known for his epic multi-hour live club sets and acerbic wit, he characterises this collection of new material as a 'cybernetic poem' that both indulges us in the mores of hypnotic dance music while holding a critical, and at times satirical, lens toward the culture writ large.
The opening title track is symbolic of this balance, the crisp spoken word poetry communicating hypermodernity in crisis in a piece that equally evokes the masked humour of Chic and the biting surreality of Chris Morris. 'Modern life is still rubbish you
say. Modern rubbish is still life'. The tracks 'MIMOSA' and 'SPECULATIVE' play with a similar conflict, warping the themes
of modern luxury familiar to Malcolm McLaren's seminal 'Paris' album, and delivering rare vocal lines that convey distance and a degree of uneasiness. The masterful club tracks that constitute the bulk of this album feel all the more powerful and honest when framed in this hyper aware context, confirming the underlying inclusiveness in Warwick's music and perspective.

There we are : Two years have passed already again since the last single by Jazzanova, "I Human".

"Never change a winning team" is the name of the formula for success with the current coup "Now There Is We". Once again Paul Randolph takes care of vocal business and wrote lyrics that are as uplifting as only he can provide. The outcome is a infectious hybrid of vocal house and soulful pop. When Randolph repeats the line "There was me, now there is we, I never go back..." at the climax of the song, you notice that he's not only celebrating a romantic triumph, but also the community spirit of a well-functioning band, well maybe even of a party in sheer harmony.

The trademark of the track though is the ultra deep bass line along the sophisticated live drum programming fitting every house-set perfectly. Therefore you get that's how service orientated Sonar Kollektiv is the instrumental version on the flipside of this illustrious 10inch of vinyl.

At this point we need to just accept a mystery. May of 2012, I flew out to Detroit to play DEMF and called Todd to see if he would be available to grab a bite and chat some shit before the show. A few hours later Todd arrived in his converted Police Cruiser with spot light to take me away from the festival to his house to listen to unreleased joints by him and his heroes. That planted the seed in my head to work with Todd. A year later at Red Bull Music Academy in NYC, where Todd had built the recording studio, I finally had my shit together enough to properly propose an EP.

Tomorrow We Sail is a group of seven musicians, based in Leeds, UK. Formed in 2009 they have spent the past four years developing their sound into what is now a vast landscape of billowing, reverb-soaked guitars, orchestral strings, piano, organ and multi-layered vocals.

Folk, slowcore, neo-classicism, minimalism, ambience, and post-rock are all apparent in the vast and winding soundscapes Tomorrow We Sail create. The music is slow-burning, creeping quietly into consciousness, the sonic terrain covered ensures the listener is held through a constantly moving orchestrated cavern of sound, with earnest melodies and harmonies drifting and falling all around.

After self-releasing their debut EP, 'The Common Fire', in 2010, the band retreated back to their studio to further develop and refine their sound as their line-up evolved, enabling the band to incorporate an ever expanding roster of instruments. With the line-up solidified, the band released two singles, 'The White Rose' in November 2011, followed by 'For Rosa' in May 2012.

October 2012 saw Tomorrow We Sail embark on their first tour of the UK & EU, playing both headline shows and supports with bands such as Caspian, Last Harbour and Ef, culminating in an appearance at the The London International Festival of Exploratory Music at Kings Place.

Over the past three summers, Tomorrow We Sail have taken to the stage at festivals across the UK, including Kendal Calling, Tramlines, Sheep Music, Landed & Galtres, as well as contributing tracks to the independent feature film 'Broken Roads', released in September 2012 in cinemas across the US and winner of Best Motion Picture and Best Director at the American International Film Awards.

The band have just completed the recording of their debut album which is set for worldwide release in February 2014.

answer probably is: 'That's the new one by Paskal & Urban Absolutes'. The
blank faces of your circle of friends can be encountered best with: 'It's those two
guys that were signed by Alex Barck for Sonar Kollektiv about two years ago.
They are resident DJs at their label nights by now. And even though one of
them, Alexander, lives in Berlin and the other one, Adrian lives in Dusseldorf
both make music together. They fly and drive back and forth and that's how this
fabulous album came into being.' Then you may want to rewind the record to it's
beginning and play it from scratch.

Several years ago, Valentin Stip was sitting alone by a harbor in the small French town where his parents grew up. 'I heard all the sailing strings hit the masts, and I realized that every sound you hear is potentially music,' he says. 'The only thing that makes sound into music is the mind, arranging it.' Since then, Valentin Stip has been building a bridge between the sounds that live inside and outside his head. On Sigh, the 21-year-old producer's full-length debut on Other People, Stip organizes classical piano, lightly sputtering grooves and intimate found sounds into an album of compositional grace and emotional honesty. Valentin Stip emigrated to New York City in middle school and immediately fell in with a creative crowd-including then-fledgling producer and future Other People label head Nicolas Jaar. Upon learning the ins and outs of electronic production, Stip discovered a new, more personal way of interpreting the darkly shaded piano music he'd been writing. He soon released a string of melancholy, beat-based EPs on Nicolas Jaar's Clown & Sunset label, Anytime Will Do (2011) and Angst (2013), and toured alongside Jaar, all while he was still in college. With eight songs clocking in at nearly an hour and sequenced as a continuous piece of music, Valentin Stip's Sigh charts a winding path through its creator's psyche. As Sigh unfolds, sounds become as tactile as objects: overcast electronic atmospheres rumble and swirl, minimalist piano melodies chime in the distance, and subtle programming percolates like ripples on the surface of a lake.

Newly born, Retiree, recently kicked its way through the musical birth sac and into Sydney's live scene, with a spate of vitalising performances. The four mammals who take stage, Tori Holleman, Ryan Powderly, Marco Vella and Matt Crowley have shimmied their road cases through many tight stage doors over the last twelve months, consistently presenting an evolving repertoire of artful tracks to thirsty ears. The band's well-arranged melodies and ideas are translated by a variety of instruments both electronic and acoustic, and are importantly not lost during performance. Among those recently engaged were founders of Sydney's burgeoning Plastic World label - swiftly leading to a Retiree's very first EP to be released early in December. Dance record commissars, Suzanne Kraft (Running Back Records) and Andras Fox (Home Loan Records), have leapt with uncommon keenness at the offer to remix the single from the upcoming 12 release. Icelandic band Bloodgroup have had their powerfully crafted brand of electronic music playing on our stereo on repeat ever since the February release of the Tracing Echoes Album on Sugarcane. The highly developed album was described as majestic ballads, grinding beats, and a pop single or three thrown in for good measure from the likes of Dummy Magazine. Earmilk (Canada) claims 'The Icelandic foursome cut icy melodies through the steam on Tracing Echoes, undoubtedly their best to date, but more impressively, one of the best albums of 2013. With its delicate vocals and gemmed synths, (it) strikes closer to early Knife or Zola Jesus than Depeche Mode. Depeche Mode's shadow might reach far and wide, but their descendants keep finding ways to push gloomy synth-pop into darker, tighter corners. Bloodgroup rips up the mold, equal parts muscle and machine, the band manages to concoct a mixture that's just as addictive as anything from Dave Gahan and company'......... Robot Koch and director Lukas Feigelfeld have teamed up to create a special collaboration project. After Lukas directed the video 'Autodreams' ('The Other Side', Project: Mooncircle) in 2011, they wanted to go a step further.
"The idea behind the release 'Unpaved' was to create a short film in which the music and the images are equally important. Imagine the old mystic character 'Pan', which represents nature, animalism and freedom, in a contemporary and realistic setting; becoming a modern vagabond, a drifter, living in the woods and roaming the lands, always accompanied by his friend, the dog. As his path leads him into the city of modern society, he is quickly confronted with its harsh reality - The conflict between living in an urban space and wanting to be at piece in a remote place in nature. Can we consider ourselves animals or have we already evolved into something too distanced from its natural enviroment and essence 'When I write music it's always very visual. I have images in my mind that put me in certain moods while I produce - oftentimes I make music to a film that hasn't been shot yet. This has been something I wanted to do for a long time: compose music for a film.' - Koch

HVNXX is one of the most special projects we've taken part in as a label. Some months ago The XX and Young Turks asked our artists to remix tracks from 'Coexist'. It was a big honour and also a big responsi- bility, specially considering that The XX is one of our favourite bands. The outcome of such challenge is a four-track EP that showcases the sound of both well-established members of the Hivern family, such as Marc Piñol and New Jackson, and upcoming talents such as Round and Mistakes Are Ok.
All four remixes are pretty different among them, but they all manage to maintain the distinctive spirit of the original songs in their own way. Marc Piñol takes 'Fiction' to the good ol' days of Chicago house, laying the original vocals on top of analog drum-machines and a rubbery bassline to that suggest an imaginary collaboration between Adonis and Oliver Sim. The elusive Mistakes Are Ok maintains the tropical vibe of 'Reunion' but provides a warped atmosphere combining breezy chimes with static haze and a propulsive bass that boosts the song towards the second part of the remix. Hivern's latest signee Round transforms the fragility of 'Missing' into a soothing house cut through uplifting organ chords and vigorous rhythms fulfilling dancefloor demands without loosing it's melancholic character. Finally, New Jackson proves once again his knack with nocturnal ambiences flipping 'Swept Away' into a sensuous deep-house gem guided by an absorbing piano and a slow but steady groove.
The release comes in an embossed sleeve with artwork designed by Arnau Pi. HVNXX is a co-release with Young Turks.

He is a frequent guest of Kompakt's Pop Ambient series and just released probably the longest maxi in the world - the almost eighty minute (!) ambient piece "Red Book" on Magazine.
