Richard Fearless - Night Blind

Richard Fearless

Night Blind

12inchDRONE013

08.12.2017

Night Blind is Richard Fearless' second release on Drone's white label series. The title track coalesced in the early hours of the morning as diffuse, Turneresque lights glimmered across the Thames and the container was pounded by a storm. Unnerving and melancholic yet with a glimmer of light, this is Fearless at his best.

On the B side is Cancan. With Xavier's spiritual acid head, Kenichi Iwasa, on percussion duties, this is one for peak time body shaking.

Both tracks were recorded and mixed at the Metal Box by Chris Blakey and produced by Richard Fearless.

Zomby - Mercury*s Rainbow

Zomby

Mercury*s Rainbow

12inchLOVE107
Modern Love
06.12.2017

After nearly a decade in the making, Zomby finally dispatches Mercury's Rainbow, his astonishing and uniquely formulated dedication to Wiley's series of Eskibeat releases, a.k.a. the cornerstone of grime.
Originally recorded over an intense couple of weeks while suffering from circadian dysrhythmia,
Mercury's Rainbow documents Zomby riffing on intricately hand-programmed arpeggios, using theories of colour and its relation to the sonic chromatic spectrum - the circle of fifths - to place an expressively avant spin on the Wiley Kat's slyding Triton squares and frozen, post-garage drum patterns.
Rather than simply imitating Wiley's foundational unit of grime currency, Zomby innovates with a structure of bewildering, modal styles, refracting 16 diamond-cut permutations according to a colour-sound spectrum of tonalities. In the process he effectively loosens up and liquifies the Eski riddim, rendering its bones and sinew in varying states of reactive, physical deliquescence or GIF-like micro-organisms.
For dancers and DJs, the fluid contours and viscous, displaced rhythmic anticipation of Mercury's Rainbow suggests myriad geometries for movement in-the-mix, and serves to single-handedly put to sleep a whole genre of also-ran, prosaic 'future grime' thru its methodical, inventively ground-up construction.
While it's difficult to say with certainty, if Mercury's Rainbow was issued at the same time it was created, it may have arguably altered the course of UK grime instrumentals in much the same way
Wiley's original template coined a whole new genre, essentially making it the last word in grime futurism, proper.

Marco Shuttle - Systhema (2x12")

For its ninth release, Italian label Spazio Disponible looks to countryman Marco Shuttle for a first full length. 'Systhema' comes three years after his last album on his own Eerie label and finds him again focussing on an absorbing ambient techno style across eight enthralling cuts. Shuttle layers sound in subtle ways and has a meticulous attention to detail that results in a cinematic techno style that is cavernous and hypnotizing. Always operating in a region where ambient, techno and heady soundtracks become one, with this album Marco Shuttle once again confirms he is one of the finest sonic sculptors out there.

Brandon Wolcott & Emil Abramyan - Music Of The Record

Apart from their own works composers, musicians and producers Brandon Wolcott and Emil Abramyan already had a joint release with YouAndTheSpace Between, the opener on the Don't Break My Love release on Nicolas Jaar's Clown & Sunset label in 2012. In the same year the two have approached by theater artists Michael Silverstone and Abigail Browde of 600 Highwaymen to compose music for a new work of live performance called The Record. Aside from a simple series of prompts and directions, the music was composed independently of the choreography. Drawing from backgrounds in theatrical sound design, classical composition and experimental electronic music, Brandon Wolcott and Emil Abramyan sought to create a diverse tapestry of sound, striving for a dynamic emotional arc that might elude a sense of genre or recognizable form. The music is performed live, with Emil on cello and structured into six songs on the Mini-LP Music of The Record to be released at the end of November 2017. Brandon Wolcott is a Brooklyn based sound artist, composer and theatrical sound designer. His work has been heard at venues including The Pubic Theater, Lincoln Center, Park Avenue Armory, Mass Moca, Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago and Centre Pompidou. He has released music with Wolf + Lamb Music, Archipel Records and Nicolas Jaar's Other People. His dance-music project Smirk, has been presented at venues and festivals around the world, including Communiky, Mutek, Save, Dispatch, and UnSound.

Heartless

12inchMD258LP
n5MD
24.11.2017

n5MD is proud to announce Heartless, the new album from Brock Van Wey's epic ambient guise bvdub.

First bvdub full-length ever pressed to vinyl. 2LP Transparent Copper

hose who have been able catch him live have found themselves undoubtedly immersed in sound. With Van Wey's 'ebb' warmly cradling you in juxtaposition to the 'flow' that teeters near the thresholds of human aural acceptance. There is no denying it, he excels at and revels in filling spaces with swirling waves of emotive tone. Heartless, for those keeping track, is his 29th bvdub album, origi- nally borne from the intention of reflecting the concepts and experience of a series of live shows from months and years before... a kind of prologue, as it were, that could further explain the painful impetus behind those live forays, and the life he attempted to escape within them. However, shortly into the writing process, he found Heartless became something more than even he intended: an even greater layered, monumental, and autonomous experience than its original intention - and swept itself into a life of its own.

We've been treated to beat-less bvdub works before, but with Heartless, Van Wey has created something far more monolithic than what has come before it. The album starts as bvdub album's sometimes do: warm washes of sound below the soulfully angelic vocals that Van Wey often gravitates to, this time distant echoes, it seems. But with Heartless this is only your introduction... easing you in before plunging to the deep end. As time passes, what voices existed drown below visceral, amor- phous, unabashed waves of sound that are wholeheartedly more sinister in temperament than his previous works, and the perfect manifestation of n5MD's "heart to hands" ideology.

Marc Romboy - Monde Futuriste

10"

Marc Romboy presents his upcoming album "Voyage de la planète" his first solo full-length production in over eight years. Released on his newly launched Hyperharmonic label, Voyage de la Plantète signifies an exciting new chapter for Marc as he experiments with his sound - pushing the boundaries between classical and electronic music to create both an emotional and atmospheric experience.
The first impression of this new sound can be heard on this 10", the album opener "Monde futuristewhich blends together beautiful strings and soft flittering synths. While "Monde futuriste" merges the beauty of the violine played by Miki Kekenj and electronic arrangments, "Voyage de la planète" mixes the two mediums together with fluttering synths and a somber string quartet.
Inspired by a concert with the Dortmund Philharmonic Orchestra where he performed Claude Debussy works in a contemporary way, this 10" and the album signify the start of a new chapter for Marc Romboy. Combining the strange, fascinating sounds of electronic music with the sublime beauty of classical music to create an extraordinary sonic experience for the listener.

New long player from Manchester's Claro Intelecto. Entitled 'Exhilarator', the 13 track album marks a return to action for the esteemed producer. A cinematic album of icy techno, weighty bass and poignant melody. From plaintive keys and slow motion drums awash with melody to corrugated industrial drums that don't let up, this is a diverse album in both mood and texture. Moments of ambient celestial beauty exist next to breezy and summery grooves while skewed and sludgy acid sits next to serene underwater dub. Stewart's mission to step outside his usual self has resulted in another landmark electronic album. Killer release!!!

13.10.2017

Spazio Disponibile welcomes yet another new artist to their realm. This time the label welcomes producer Grand River for its 11th release, and one that marks something of a new direction where ambient and experimental music will sit next to more dance floor fare. It's a direction already hinted at with Marco Shuttles full album earlier this year, and is now realised once more by Aimee Portioli. She is a multi instrumentalist, soundtrack composer and known for her deep and atmospheric sound and debuts on Donato Dozzy and Neel's label with four lush ambient explorations. Across the course of the tracks, fizzing, grainy ambiance makes way for dark atmospheres, then brighter synths arrive late on to bring some light to the shadows. Elsewhere, undulating rhythms sway down low as muted keys and strings ripple in the distance. It makes for a cavernous world that keeps you in blissful suspense and overall this EP is a trip through a dark underground cavern with a spring day high up above. As well as this brilliantly cerebral EP, the future will also bring more Spazio label nights across the world starting in 2018.

Route 8 back to his techno project Q3A dropping some heavy grooving tracks! A year after his last release on Delsin, the talented Hungarian producer is back with four more cuts of techno and electro excellence, club tracks that ooze atmosphere and intriguing details. The Nameless Place kicks off with a tense and tangled techno track that is urgent and slick as is hurries on through damp underground caverns. The Very End of You completely flips the script and is a slow motion bit of dub. With only sparse kick drums, the focus is on the cavernous pads that smear in huge arcs as watery droplets and heavenly chords add to the brain soothing effect. Temple of Retribution is back to techno, this time with loose, jumbled percussion and clipped drums cantering along at high speed. Again it's roomy stuff with no real edge, the Deva Station drops into house mode, wriggling drums and distant vocal cries finished off with some classic Detroit keys. It's a high tech, soulful track that closes out a diverse and devastating EP.

Patricia - Autotomy

Autotomy is a collaboration between Belgium's Sleeperhold Publications, Brooklyn-based musician Patricia (Max Ravitz) and the Dutch artist Louis Reith. This output is the result of a long process of contemplation, discussion and elimination which gave us a record that encapsulates both Patricia's sense for hardware production and dance floor rawness. Describing this release is not a simple task. So we'll just tell it like it is: it's a record that slows down and, in this process, reveals its mystery. Referencing the title of this release, wunderkind Max Ravitz seems to provide the listener with the possibility of transformation, a way to shed part of your own being. When running though the tracks, one discovers the essentials of Patricia's sound architecture: the presence of lightness, of longing, mixed with the ability to deny it in the next instant. Sonically, there's a careful balance in these productions that belies their fundamental function as body music. It's ambient yet danceable, approachable despite it's often deconstructed layout, and ultimately warm and inviting. The entire record is made using Ravitz collection of hardware, which gives it its uncompromising texture. The presence of kicks, beats and soundscapes does not originate from a clean digital source but from a physical action, an excerpt of movement, a tick of the human hand. It is floating versus rhythmical movement, visceral versus strict. But above all, it is alive. The artwork used for Autotomy's sleeve design and the etching on the B-side was provided by Louis Reith. (All three tracks feature on the record's A-side.) Just as Patricia, Reith tries to resist technology in favour of physical and craft-based media, though the contrast between digital and analog is always present.Dutch artist Louis Reith produces works through a variety of different media, ranging from collages to wood sculptures, to paper objects and ink on paper works, always keeping an interest in simple abstract shapes and their combination. With an interest in materiality Louis resurrects found footage and creates new landscapes of shape and color, celebrating the human hand at work. Deliberate compositions form an illegible visual language where hidden words are portrayed as abstract sculptures.Reith also co-runs Jordskred, an independent publishing company worth checking out.Ravitz certainly is unstoppable and releases in a relentless and uncompromising fashion.Besides many collaborative projects with an array of artists (released under monikers such as Masks, Pulpo, Inhalants, DSR.MR...) he's released music on labels like Opal Tapes, L.I.E.S., Russian Torrent Versions, Ghostly Intl.,... 2017 has been quite a year for him so far. He not only founded his own imprint, Active Cultures, but also released a triple LP. Ghostly Intl. describes the release as a 'kaleidoscopic, a multi-faceted techno trip' and we couldn't agree more.

Rabit - Les Fleurs Du Mal

Rabit

Les Fleurs Du Mal

12inchHALC016

10.11.2017

Les Fleurs Dul Mal is the absorbingly grotesque sophomore album by pioneering artist, DJ and label owner Eric C. Burton aka Rabit, who, along with regular collaborators such as Chino Amobi (NON) and Elysia Crampton, is in part responsible for defining the contemporary conflux of avant club, folk and noise musics.

On his follow-up to Communion (Tri Angle, 2015), Rabit indulges his fascinations with psychedelic themes in an ambitious attempt to locate his sense of self amid increasingly chaotic environments. The result is a personal milestone for the artist, a riveting tableaux of hyper sensual texture, colour and melody forming a densely detailed and layered prism to best peer upon the abyss between his reality, your own, and our shared consensual hallucination.

In aesthetic and intent, Rabit boldly embraces the vacuum left by the late, great Coil, realising a genre-agnostic consolidation of folk, new age, drone and noise tropes transcended thru acousmatic processing and modular synthesis, in this case fittingly provided by erstwhile Coil member Drew McDowell. In the process he potentially triangulates Les Fleurs Dul Mal with records by fellow Coil fiends, Elysia Crampton's Demon City and Chino Amobi's Paradiso, who all essentially project bold, new, independent worlds unto themselves which find common links in Coil's canon.

Unfolding in 12 movements like some future classical tragedy, Rabit gestures his sounds with a remarkable freedom of rhythmic meter and freehand strokes that belies its meticulous construction below the surface. Cecilia's vocals and the sharp strings of opener Possessed suggest the spirit of Baudelaire's text heard at street level, while the dissonant stress of Bleached World - a secret weapon 'til now - expresses a beautifully bittersweet anguish, and the recursive curdle of Ontological Graffiti catches in the throat with uncannily emotive effect. The Whole Bag locates his firmest dembow rhythms, but buried under collapsing sidereal pressure, and Cecelia's return in closer Elevation perfectly emulates something like a new age tristesse, which defines the record's humanity in the face of such uncompromising synthetic sensations.

Victoria Lukas - Spectrographies: Music From The Motion Picture By Smith

''During one long winter's night in a neon-lit Paris, a restless young man wanders around to let himself be found by something that most people otherwise try to avoid: ghosts. And the night is full of unexpected encounters in this ultra-chic film, which is neither documentary nor fiction, but rather an adaptation of the idea that Jacques Derrida defines in a guest star appearance on the cinema screen: that film plus psychoanalysis is equal to the science of ghosts - ie. a form of 'spectrography', which the French artist SMITH in her self-ironic, self-conscious, science-fiction essay of a film, conjures up with thermal infrared and in the dialogue's mosaic of quotes of rambling French philosophy, from Breton and Barthes to Merleau-Ponty and Derrida himself. Hyper-modern and rich in (retro) references â and above all its own ideas, for there are other ways to answer the question of how far you believe in ghosts, than yes or no. And it is this range of possibilities that 'Spectrographies' charts with great ingenuity.'' 'Spectrographies' is the debut movie of interdisciplinary artist SMITH. SMITH â artist, photographer and filmmaker â their work can be seen as an observation of the constructions, deconstructions, relocations and moults of the identity. Through the hybridization of techniques, mediums, the use of new technologies and collaborations with scientists and philosophers, SMITH develops a poetics of metamorphosis. Through the representation of ghostly and fantasmatic figures, as well as post-traumatic transformations, they capture negative and hollow subjectivation processes intertwined with self-effacement and self-image issues. Accounting for creative destruction, SMITH's works invite viewers to be immersed in a dark and diffuse atmosphere, which is characteristic of their auratic and ethereal style, and conducive to daydream and meditation. Preceding a meticulous production process, the movie enjoyed screenings at various locations around Paris including the famous Centre Pompidou, Gaité Lyrique, Musée du Jeu de Paume and David Lynch's famous Silencio Club. Additional screenings also took place in Berlin and Copenhagen. The composer for the sound score to 'Spectrographies', Victoria Lukas, also writes and records under various pseudonyms including Vita, Inkamera and Zerkalo; with the cream of Victoria's work having been released via Last Known Trajectory, Clone and Frustrated Funk. SMITH and Lukas, who have been collaborating for the past ten years, worked both separately and together for almost one year on the directions the music should take to accompany and highlight the film's intentions. Within 'Spectrographies' is unleashed what we wholeheartedly recognize to be Victoria's most intimate, intriguing, ambitious, and challenging work to date â representing what we at LKT feel to be her bravest and most- marked departure from many of the often restrictive barriers and constraints that the world of dance music predicates. This release is the first in a sequence of concept releases. The series entitled... Vita. We invite you into the world that is 'Spectrographies'⦠Do you believe in ghostsâ¦

Psychic Health - Psychic Health

If Psychic Health's self-titled debut album took the lessons the LA duo learned in the teeming clubs of Berlin and Melbourne, their latest LP, Exclusion, look inward, a document of the duo tunneling down the studio wormhole. As such, Exclusion is a remarkably dynamic effort, adeptly jumping between evocative ambience ("Jamaica 88," "Ryso") and equally expansive dance floor fair.
Examples of the latter, such as the album's obvious centerpiece and titular track, Exclusion, document Gabriel Mounsey and Devon Steffens's harnessing modular beast technology for peak techno utility, finding a clear thoroughfare between the soaring strings of Derrick May's classic Transmat releases and Ostgut Ton's current EBM-inflected precision.
As you'd expect from Mounsey's background in film composition, Exclusion whirls with imagery. It's a Los Angeles album, but focuses on raw beauty of the city at night—the lights in the distance, and the desolate downtown streets where kickdrums often waft from disused warehouses. While their debut album opened notable doors for the group, landing distribution from Hard Wax and featuring in the Netflix series Sense8, Exclusion is an altogether masterful turn for Psychic Health, their complete studio immersion easing the listener into deeply hypnotic states.

Marie Davidson & Invisible Church - Whatever Makes You Feel Safe

Bologna's Yerevan Tapes project vivid sci-fi sound designs from producer/signer Marie Davidson and sound designer Invisible Church, making up the duo's first collaborative work, recorded during September 2016 - January 2017, and notably starring Theo Parrish playing cymbal on the 10 minute submission, Ten Years.
Spawned from a meeting at RBMA's Montreal '16 festival, Whatever Makes You Feel Safe locates her signature vocals far removed from the structural synth-pop comforts of her roundly acclaimed debut side, Perte D'Identité, and the Adieux Au Dancefloor LP for Cititrax, and elusively diffused into chasmic frameworks of field recordings and depth charge percussion deployed by Invisible Church.
In all three parts they feel out chasmic, void-like dimensions with a microscopic attention to textural and spatial qualities. Marie's vocals signify a ghost in the machine presence on Collage, rendered as silvery streaks and cluster-formed cloud of ferric harmonics perfusing drizzly street or industrial scenes worthy of a Bladerunner scene.
Never Release The Tension meanwhile isolates and focuses in on a blunted, atonal sort of post-industrial sound design recalling Mika Vainio in its brooding pressure, or even the elegiac glossolalia of Liz Fraser via Tropic of Cancer in its lamenting keen.
But the best is definitely saved for last with Ten Years, where speaker-drooping subs underline sheets of steely grey, phantasmic dissonance, punctuated by the patter and splash of Theo Parrish's cymbal work, and possibly betraying a hint of influence from first nation musical traditions as much as kosmische or avant BM.

J.C aka Jose Cabrera and Kastil collaborate and come with the exciting results. A fresh blend of fierce techno, ambience, industrial, noise and found sounds recordings. A full length captivating album that pushes and pulls you through an edgy and engaging world of sound. Part 1 mixes up trance-inducing deep techno with punishing drum programming. Synths have a life of their own as they whip and snap about and bring a post apocalyptic sense of foreboding. Some tracks are abstract modular gurgles and others are lo-fi, heavily textured affairs that are beguiling beautiful. The use of modular synths lends the whole thing an unpredictable and analogue feel that makes is bristle and brim with life throughout. Part 2 focuses on more suspensory ambient sounds. It means tracks zone you out and get you thinking, with distant melodies drifting next to warm solar winds. When drums do appear they are deep down below and dubbed out affairs that unfold slowly. A album that keeps you locked from start till end!

23.10.2017

Having given us a taster of things to come back in September 2016, with the 'Pressing Matters' single, The Cyclist returns to Hypercolour with a brand new, full length album. And as the title suggests, 'Sapa Inca Delirium' leans heavily on South American mysticism, not just musically, but in the visual imagery that the eleven-track album paints so well across its various tempos and rhythms. From the tropical burst of mood setting opener, 'Go Back' to the steamy and pacey percussive flow of 'Inhale/Exhale' which features regular collaborator Tanaya Harper on vocals, The Cyclist's fourth long player is crammed full of intriguing atmospheres and soundscapes. 'Antiexist', with its down-tempo rolling snare fills and ethereal Gregorian chanting segues effortlessly into 'A Blind Girl Drinks Ayawaska', a suitably discordant and hallucinogenic skit that ensures the album flows into the more rhythmic cuts like 'Skateboarding In The Jungle' and 'Mirrors' (the second album cut to feature Harper on vocals). Even the traditional jazzier vibes of 'When We All Break Down' featuring Joni are kept rugged and boisterous, with heavyweight bending bass, choppy breakbeats and FX'd ambience amongst the smooth jazzy chords and sweet vocal delivery. 'Sapa Inca Delirium' is one of those albums that will reward on repeat listen, such is the diversity of style on show here, and the detailed and wide eyed curiosity offered up across the long player's fifty three minutes.

Fantastic Twins - Obakodomo

Optimo Music is delighted to release a first album by Fantastic Twins (formerly known as The Twins). We'll let them tell you the story behind this inspired and beguiling record -
Obakodomo (Au Balcon Du Monde) is a soundtrack I created for a piece of contemporary dance, performed by two dancers for a young audience from the age of 4. It is the story of an imaginary journey in Antartica where two explorers go on an adventure. They encounter a colony of penguins and will progressively learn to understand their habits and respect their environment. Essentially, Au Balcon Du Monde is a metaphor of how to exist next to each other, how to share a territory, how to learn to live together and share resources.
The scenography and stage accessories were designed in a minimalistic and non-obvious form to leave all the space for imagination. The penguins were made of translucent material to provide light effects and were programmed to move in a swaying motion, allowing interaction with the dancers and the music. LED system could be wireless piloted.
With the soundtrack, I wanted to create an atmosphere that would immediately transport the children into this terra nova - a poetical space, like a cold sphere, where the strange meets the frightening and the playful. Translating the immense vs the small, the far-off vs the near, the collective vs the individual, the strange vs the familiar or the cold vs the heat. My intention was to follow the thread of the story in a narrative, yet non-caricatural way. Music for children doesn't have to be 'childish'. Children love to be scared or even just challenged. They love to love and react instantly to what they hear through their emotions. Ultimately, the soundtrack aims to provide different levels of 'reading' so that it becomes something more universal. So we, adults, just have to accept the invitation.

Token is pleased to announce Metabolism, the sophomore album from Sigha. The LP marks James Shaw's third release on the Token label following his singles Christ Figures and Our Father. Metabolism represents an arrival: the artist offers his definitive statement on a production aesthetic that has been in development over the last few years.

Shaw's work as Sigha has always placed the listener at a centrifugal point that invites a clandestine hypnosis rather than an abject hysteria. Cavernous low ends fixed firmly and effectively in a mono space tether the music to the body, while exquisitely executed white noise patterns and crystalline pads warp and hiss around the stereo environment. This keen ear for distinction within the frequency spectrum acts as the central theme on the LP.

Metabolism encompasses a power dynamism that departs from the explicitly greyscale finish found on his more conceptual work as Sigha and as A Vision Of Love for Guy Brewer's Avian label. Though elements of Metabolism maintain a driven, corrosive quality, each searing sequence or mordant drum machine hit occupies its own space. On high-energy dance floor moments and abstract tracks alike, Shaw's approach to distortion is one that sets out with an objective to separate components rather than to bind them. This creates a matrix of aural stimuli that remain heady and inherently propulsive, but are realised in a fashion more akin to high fidelity sound design than processes traditionally associated with the techno genre.

The record possesses a powerful musicality beyond this acute attention to form and structure. In the past, Shaw's productions have often married high-energy drum work with subtly shifting minor keys spread around the sonic periphery. On Metabolism, emotive leads sit squarely and comfortably in the foreground, and build towards rapturous crescendos that are crisp and omnipresent throughout the mix. These careful layers generate the extraordinary tension that has since become a hallmark of the British artist's work.

Metabolism is a techno album, but its frame of reference is generous, drawing on the finest facets of the artist's own varied discography and the wider electronic music landscape. Cohesive and modern, Shaw's latest work eschews a handful of riffs on a single idea in favour of a multi-faceted, fully realised expression of what the genre can be - it is a vital addition to the Token label's already enviable catalogue of releases.

Leonard Lampion - Crusade For Energy

Abstract Reality presents you an album by French artist Leonard Lampion. It gathers a one hour selection of cuts that explores several different musical landscapes. Harsh industrial tracks share the tape alongside dark drone ambient, tribal sounds and downtempo emo feelings. Side A is the more dancefloor oriented side, while side B explores more experimental paths.

Otto Lindholm - Alter

Alter

Alter is the new album from Belgium-based double bass player and electronic producer Otto Lindholm.
Divided into four colour-inspired, long-form movements, Alter takes off from Lindholm's previous work - a self-titled album released in 2015 on Icarus Records, and pushes the already abundant palette of sounds even further. This new work is more brooding and hypnotic. A deep, resonating bass is present - hinting at the likes of Greek, chamber-doom merchants Mohammad but perhaps with more attention placed upon textures and melody.
The record moves at a funereal pace and opener Fauve hits abyssal depths from the outset. A bowed melody is coaxed through the throbbing bass with dissonant harmonics drawing you in and holding you close. The ghostly beginnings of Alyscamps create an overwhelmingly tense atmosphere where acoustic and electronic elements collide and evolve into a heaving, ceremonious drone. Shafts of light emerge through the fog but the tone remains a haunted one. Closer, Heliotrope, strikes a more hopeful note. A lighter, more open feel emerges - bringing to mind early work of The Rachels or perhaps Deaf Center.
Alter is a triumphant record in its entirety. Seamlessly moving from light to shade and back again, experimenting in heavy atmosphere and ultimately drawing you into its deep and mysterious world.
Some words from Otto Lindhom on the album:
My original idea was to work on the melody and the play of the arco, looking for expressive music from this combination. To do it, I first decided to work on 'modes' and their specific color. With these modes I could work on tensions, frictions and color shading. Working on the melody aspect, I was looking to go beyond the romantic, easy listening or sentimentalizing, trying to suggest more than an expression of concrete emotions.
Naturally, a kind of impressionist, musical approach appeared to me where I could simply develop and enhance the music I was playing/writing. With my daughter about to born and my strong wish to record new music, this spurred me to work efficiently. I had no time or space for deviations, forcing me to sculpt the music as it came out, enjoying and contemplating a sort of rawness in my play and direction.'

Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Ambient Black Magic (3x12")

Following a still-ongoing series of reissues of the earliest, previously tape-only releases from Dominick Fernow's Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement, this long-in-the-making new album proper is an epic 80 minute set featuring additional production and 'sound on sound processing' from Silent Servant, a remix from Substance and mastering by Paul Corley. It's by far the most ambitious and far-reaching Rainforest dispatch, taking that artificial, tropical humidity as a starting point before heading deep into a kind of textured ambience that reminds us of everything from Talk Talk's Laughing Stock to Carl Craig's How The West Was Won, from Huerco S. to classic Chain Reaction.
'Ambient Black Magic' moves away from the extreme saturation of those early cassettes and the industrial environmentalism of his previous album Green Graves and is described by the label as 'Fear Dub' - which is essentially the perfect encapsulation of the deep sense of paranoia contained within. The opening Jungle
Is A Shapeshifter is a gargantuan 35 minute head-melter that's split across the first two sides of the vinyl pressing. Co-Produced with Silent Servant, it's the most absorbing piece of new electronic music we've heard for time - slowly unfurling via chorus pedal guitars that gradually degrade, while a fathoms-deep bass pulse and tape-delay gives the piece its shape. It's like an updated, tranquillised, fever-dream variant of the kind of ambient dub Vainqueur made his own back in the mid-90's - we could listen to it on a loop for hours.
Beyond The Yellow-Spotted Bamboo, another Silent Servant co-production, clocks in at a relatively modest 17 minutes and heads off into more open terrain, this time with submerged percussion providing some propulsion, while shards of coloured synth pull you back into the swamp. It's another humid, breathtaking session - bringing out the best in both Fernow and Silent Servant via perhaps the most important and satisfying work either artist has been involved with.
Praying Mantis Black Arts is another masterclass in sub-bass construction, while Chile's Crimson Tide is the shortest track on the album, a kind of broken coda before Substance ends the set with a remix of Beyond The Yellow-Spotted Bamboo, deploying a tribal reduction that references classic Chain Reaction from a producer who was part of it first hand. It's a relatively upbeat conclusion to one of the most immersive listening experiences you'll have in 2017; those of you looking for escape should dive in - you won't want to re-engage with the world around you for a while.

Sollmann & Gürtler - Gegen Die Zeit

Gegen Die Zeit

Sky Walking
13.10.2017

(en) On September 11th, 2015 the audience of the stunning 'Rotor' concert series witnessed the first live appearance of John Gürtler and Phillip Sollmann underneath a highway bridge in Offenbach, Germany. Hosted by International Music Institute Darmstadt alongside Institut für Klangforschung Offenbach and HfMDK Frankfurt, the newly formed duo performed an aural conversation on stage within the incredible architectural environment. A year later, an extract of these live recordings became part of the Sky Walking Label compilation '41'36' that now leads to the debut album of Sollmann & Gürtler 'Gegen Die Zeit'.
Phillip Sollmann and John Gürtler met as studio neighbors in the complex 'The Meadow', rebuilt in 2011 in Berlin Wedding. Exchanging ideas and instrumental advice ever since, they soon became collaborators. An acoustic version by John Gürtler for Sollmann's scientific Techno project Efdemin was the first result of their exchange.

Besides his futuristic techno productions, Phillip Sollmann is best known for his sound installations and performances including work on the Harry Partch Instruments, the Helmholtz Double Sirene and Bertoia's sound sculptures. First shown at Volksbühne Berlin in February, the show Monophonie will travel to Bochum in September as part of the Ruhrtriiiennale. Along with Konrad Sprenger (Pan / Choose) Sollmann is currently working on a unique modified Modular Organ System consisting of 93 church organ pipes that has been shown Kestnergesellschaft Hannover and Mathew Gallery Berlin - the headquarter of Sky Walking Records.
The multi instrumentalist and singer John Gürtler co- founded the studio collective Paradox Paradise. The composer is mainly writing and improvising film scores, ranging from electronica to songs and orchestral works. Gürtler has won multiple awards, including Best Song in a Film in 2014 and Best Documentary Score 2015 for Above and Below. The former free-jazz saxophonist returns to his roots as an experimental improviser and producer with the newly formed Sollmann & Gürtler.
As the record's title indicates, time seems to vaporize. While Sollmann's ring modulated electric guitar acts mainly as a fragile, percussive voice - Gürtler answers with dense and drifting modal atmospheres. A variety of reed instruments are sent through a cluster of electronic filters and devices.
With - Gegen Die Zeit', the Sky Walking imprint starts a series of releases that are focussed on spontaneous music and live recordings. Artists such as the improvisation group 'Schluss' and Golden Pudel Club's Nika Son will continue the program.

11.11.2016

Field Records is proud to present a new experimental mini album from Scott Monteith aka Deadbeat that touches on the traditional music of Qawwali. Entitled Qawwali Quatsch, it feature lots of transcendental sounds and hypnotic violins and voices across eight tracks. This absorbing album came about after Monteith--best known for his dub techno--attended the 2015 Wasser Musik festival in Berlin, which featured music from both the coastal and land locked regions of India and Pakistan. One performer was Asif Ali Kahn and his "Qawwali party," as Qawwali bands are appropriately known, and his show really struck a chord. The resulting music (which the artist admits is just a humble experiment galaxies away from the real power of the source material that inspired it) makes up this first album under his own name, and is a sympathetically infused album that ably captures the spirit of the revelatory, life changing music that is Qawwali, and an entry quite unlike any other in his now vast catalog. Collaborator and longtime friend Sophie Trudeau of Godspeed You Black Emperor! was involved for additional violin and voice treatments.

Lp 1 (2x12")

2x12inchSKUDGE-WLP03
Skudge Records
28.09.2017

This is the debut album of Swedish producer Daniel Andréasson, an artist that has both a sonically and artistic resemblance to the Skudge family of labels and artists.

Pushing his eighth year of releasing records, Andréasson has accomplished the task of creating a debut album that seem to tie together the sound of his previous EP's. Andréasson's sound is in line with a more outsider approach, but with a dance floor focus. A sound that he has been pushing since the beginning.

This approach shines through at the most on the tracks such as 'Mc35I# Rushup', 'Stay' and 'Dreams' as these specific tracks shows Andréassons more accomplished style. In between, the album keeps a perfect concept throughout. Taking breathers with its interludes and in general "shorter" tracks that hints of a ambient leaning urge to express himself, he never loses focus. A masterful debut album from a artist to keep your eye on!

C M Von Hausswolff - Still Life - Requiem

Conceptualised (2010-2013), composed and produced (2014-2017) by Carl Michael von Hausswolff in Palma (Majorca) and Stockholm. This musical piece consists only of sounds emitted and extracted from physical matter using emission spectroscopy as the sole basic technology. Acknowledgements to Linköping University (IFM), Sweden.

'Still Life - Requiem' consists of one piece with the same title and is divided up into two to fit the LP format. The piece is, as the title suggests, a requiem and it's contents are solely composed by sounds captured from a specific physical solid state material. The composer has used a technique called 'emission spectroscopy' whereby the frequencies generated from the material was analysed and transferred into, for humans, a listenable pitch (between 15 and 14000Hz). This captured organic sound material has been stretched, looped, equalised and composed to produce the recording.

A requiem is a piece of music dedicated to certain sole or several restless souls that wander our worlds looking for a place to call home. A requiem radiates calm, peace and perhaps comfort for tormented spiritual beings - it's a piece dedicated to promote and insert tranquility and transcendence.

This requiem also provides the listener with a certain feeling of connection - perhaps a connection with the unknown and with the energy field clusters and mental abilities of post-mortem life forms that would be the incorporeal essence of a living being.

CMvH (born 1956 in Linköping , Sweden) has a long history within the communities of contemporary music and visual art. His first records was released in early 80s while the most recent saw the light just a few years ago ('Squared' (CD - Auf Abwegen, 2015)). In recent years he has been collaborating with Leslie Winer ('1' (LP - Monotype 2016)) and Hans-Joachim Roedelius ('Nordlicht' (LP - Curious Music, 2017)).

He has also instigated and curated the collective sound-installation 'freq_out' during 2003 - 2017, which includes artists such as Jana Winderen, JG Thirlwell, Finnbogi Petursson, Christine Ödlund and others.

Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement - Jungle Black Magic

- Third in a series of first-time vinyl editions of early RSE material
- Originally released on 2xtape in 2012 in a run of 49 copies
- 40 Minutes long
- Remastered by Paul Corley, cut at D&M, Berlin
- 500 copies
- RIYL Coil, Demdike Stare, Prurient, Brian Eno / Jon Hassell's

Released on vinyl for the time, Jungle Black Magic is the most substantial and disorientating release in the RSE vinyl series yet, clocking in at 40 minutes and deploying some of the most
uncomfortably humid productions in Dominick Fernow's arsenal.
Stalking phantom apparitions and infrasonic illusions from the dankest sectors of his imagination,
Fernow plays voodoo tricks on charred opener The Case Of The Male Witch From Goroka - a tropical downer underpinned by larger than life sub-bass rumblings and what sound like field
recordings of youtube rainforest nightscapes rendered in abstract, digital form.
The Verdict Handed Down By A Kangaroo Court furthers trance induction with a more tribal alignment of drums, before For The Next Three Days There Was An Eerie Silence In The Village ends the set with a completely bewildering alignment of synthetic sounds designed to play tricks on your senses; somewhere between a dark meditation aid and a reworked soundtrack to Predator - the vibe exceptionally heatsick and paranoid.
These pieces operate in paradoxical dimensions where the calls of exotic birds convey a denseness that's at odds with acres of negative space. It feels like standing in a deforested land at the edge of thick jungle, the effect is uncannily transportive; your mind constantly grappling with contrasting sensory triggers. How can something this ice cold also convey such suffocating heat
It makes for an incredible, pretty much unique listening experience; like 4th world ambience but in Fourth World...some kind of Lynchian above-the-convenience store dimension.

John Duncan - Klaar

John Duncan

Klaar

12inchBT031
Black Truffle
20.10.2017

Black Truffle is thrilled to announce the first ever vinyl reissue of legendary performance and sound artist John Duncan's forgotten gem Klaar, originally released by Extreme in 1991 and partly created in collaboration with Andrew McKenzie (The Hafler Trio). Duncan is perhaps most well known for his notorious early performances pieces, which explored violence, self-denial, and the establishment of extreme psychological and physical states in both artist and audience. Alongside these transgressive experiments, Duncan began to create audio works primarily using short wave radio. Where some of Duncan's earlier recordings are composed of magnificently sculpted but abrasive walls of noise, Klaar, recorded while Duncan was living in Amsterdam, occupies a more meditative territory.
Opening with 'Delta', which layers long tones seemingly sourced from slowed down voices over a distant, watery field recording, the remainder of the first side is occupied with the epic title piece, which arranges shortwave radio abstraction, vocal experiments, and field recordings (street sounds, fireworks, monastic chants) into an episodic cinema for the ear. The second side is dominated by the long, brooding 'The Immense Room', where layers of shortwave interference and field recordings are gradually built up into a pulsing, wavering bed of sound infused with a subtly disturbing sense of psychological unrest. This rises to the surface near the end of the piece as sexual moans and ominous rumbles crisscross the stereo image before being abruptly brought to a halt.
A singular work of electroacoustic composition, Klaar is both compositionally sophisticated and infused with a sense of mystery and a vital reality often lacking in more academic experimental music; it sits proudly alongside contemporaneous recordings by Duncan's friends and collaborators Jim O'Rourke and Christoph Heemann and is a must for anyone interested in their work.
