"In Decay" bietet eine faszinierende, alternative Route für die idiosynkratische Reise des Produzenten SETH HALEY aus New Jersey - aka COM TRUISE -durch die Geschichte der elektronischen Musik. Als Compilation bisher unveröffentlichter, früher Aufnahmen umfasst ,In Decay" 13 Titel, die bisher nur als Online-Demos erhältlich waren und gänzlich ungehörte Titel, die aus der Zeit vor Haleys offiziellen Veröffentlichungen stammen - sein Debüt, die ,Cyanide Sesterz" EP, ihr Nachfolger, das Langspiel-Album ,Galactic Melt" und die ,Fairlight" EP aus dem letzten Jahr. Während die 80er Synth Sounds, die flexiblen Basslinien und Sci-Fi Aromen, die Haleys spätere Arbeiten prägen, hier schon unverkennbar sind, bleibt ,In Decay" aber auch vollwertig als für sich stehendes Album und gleichzeitig ein Einblick in die Entwicklung des einzigartigen COM TRUISE Sounds. Der Produzent erforscht eine ganze Reihe von Soundfacetten, von 8-bit inspiriertem Experimentalismus zu eindeutig tanzbaren Beats - oft innerhalb nur eines einzigen Songs. ,Controlpop" zum Beispiel kündigt sich selbst mit einem Intro an, das nach einem Commodore 64, der mit einem Hammer geschlagen wird, klingt, um sich dann zu einem langsamen flüssigen Synth. Funk weiter zu entwickeln, der an ,Galactic Melt" Highlights wie ,VHS Sex" und ,Flightwave" erinnert. Die langsam schwelende Dance Vibe wird von vielen anderen Tracks geteilt - wie zum Beispiel von ,Colorvision" und ,Yxes" - während HALEY das Tempo an anderen Stellen drosselt und die psychedelischen, kosmischen Abschweifungen von Ahnen wie TANGERINE DREAM und POPOL VUH beschwört. ,Dreambender" klingt nach einem Soundtrack zu einer Reise in unerforschte digitale Zwischenräume, während ,Video Arcade" eine wirr steigende und fallende Bassline sein Eigen nennt - ein Song wie eine Fahrt auf einer Achterbahn der virtuellen Realität. Wie jedes Werk HALEYs ist auch "In Decay" eine Pforte zu einer seltsamen, digitalen Parallelwelt - einem Ort, der aus bekannten und doch durch und durch frischen Klängen konstruiert ist; ein Ort, den es zu besuchen lohnt.

In the performance of this work, "Plan for Sleep" (1986), created simultaneously with “Every Dog Has His Day” (1985), Yamanaka took on the role of sound operation. The performance begins with a minimal piece where the tones of the electronic organ and striking phrases from the piano and saxophone race forward in syncopation. Following this, various sound fragments drift over a deafening industrial beat reminiscent of machine noises. There are also pieces that transform the typing sounds of a typewriter into rhythm, showcasing a range of experiments inspired by the then-novel sampling technology, beautifully intertwining with the physicality of the performance.

Additionally, influenced significantly by film music, Yamanaka incorporates a rich tapestry of colors through melancholic melodies that evoke various scenes, from secular jazz to other influences. This work constructs a uniquely original and sophisticated worldview that stands out even when surveying the canon of avant-garde performance art from around the globe in the postmodern era.

DUMB TYPE is a multimedia performance art group based in Kyoto that was formed in 1984 and continues to be active at the forefront of the art scene. We are excited to announce the simultaneous release of two cassette book works produced by musician Toru Yamanaka and the late Teiji Furuhashi, a central figure of the group, for works from the early DUMB TYPE Theatre era: "Every Dog Has His Day (recorded in 1985)" and "Plan For Sleep (recorded in 1986)," now available for the first time on vinyl.

Since the founding of DUMB TYPE, Yamanaka has primarily been responsible for music production, while the late Furuhashi played a crucial role in translating Yamanaka’s compositions into stage direction. Their collaboration began with previous groups ORG and R-STILL, and was influenced by the NEW WAVE and progressive rock trends they were pursuing at the time, as well as by artists like Laurie Anderson, Meredith Monk, and Robert Wilson, who fused minimal music and avant-garde performance. Moreover, their bold incorporation of cutting-edge sampling and house music during that era laid the foundation for DUMB TYPE's sound, marking an important intersection in the history of minimalism, ambient music and performance art in Japan.

Phase Group are thrilled to present our next release by newcomers to the label, the excellent Hamburg band, Love-Songs. Their new album 'Passive Progressive' will be out on cassette and digital on October 18th.

Love-Songs are the trio consisting of Thomas Korf (electronics + vocals) Sebastian Kokus (Bass) and Manuel Chittka (Percussion) who make cosmic, kraut-inspired electro-acoustic music. Many will be familiar with their previous output on wonderful labels like Kame House and Bureau B.

'Passive Progressive' lands in the form of 8 enthralling tracks that take us through dreamlike and psychedelic echoing territories, where Korf’s modulating electronics and effected vocals ripple over the grooving rhythm section of percussion and bass supplied by Kokus and Chitka. Across the album, the band are joined by a host of guest musicians and friends from Berlin and Hamburg’s underground and experimental music scenes, supplying Trombone, Mbira, Clarinet, Flute and extra synthesisers and vocals to enhance the mind-expanding and unique sound palette of these incredible tracks.

As with most of the material we’ve released on Phase Group, this is music that’s hard to pin down, that lends itself equally well to creating transcending atmospheres in the early moments of a special kind of club set as to soundtracking a mind-bending and deep personal listening experience. We’ve no doubt that the sound that Love-Songs have crafted with Passive Progressive will be enthusiastically received by all sonic voyagers and fans of the label, and we’re over the moon to welcome them to the Phase Group family.

Der norwegische Black Metal-Klassiker „Soulblight“ von 1998 neu aufgelegt! „Soulblight“ ist ein würdiger Anwärter auf eines der besten Black
Metal-Alben der 90er Jahre!1997 war ‚Witchcraft‘ ein schwieriges Album, das aufgrund seiner komplexen Kompositionen und aufwendigen
Orchestrierung seinen Kultstatus als eine der größten Black Metal-Veröffentlichungen verteidigen musste. Doch Obtained Enslavement haben genau
das geschafft, denn „Soulblight“ ist eine ganz andere Veröffentlichung, die jedoch die Qualität und das musikalische Können beibehält, für die die
Band mit „Witchcraft“ bekannt geworden ist. Die Offenheit und Mystik der orchestralen Arrangements wurde zugunsten eines eher gitarren- und
schlagzeugorientierten Sounds aufgegeben, was aber dem viel dunkleren und aggressiveren Sound von „Soulblight“ zugute kommt, denn die Struktur
des Albums ist ein Highlight im Vergleich zu seinem Vorgänger, da es sich als Ganzes konzeptioneller und vollständiger anfühlt als eine bloße
Sammlung von Songs. Das macht Sinn, denn die Texte erzählen eine epische Geschichte über einen großen Krieg gegen das „Soulblight“, eine
Geschichte, die auch durch die Musik selbst verfolgt werden kann, was es in vielerlei Hinsicht zu einem Konzeptalbum macht.

Norwegischer Black Metal Klassiker neu aufgelegt! Das vierte und letzte Obtained Enslavement-Album zum ersten Mal auf Vinyl! Wir wissen nicht, ob
es nur unsere Einbildung ist, aber wenn man über Black Metal-Bands aus Norwegen spricht, werden Obtained Enslavement oft vergessen. Das liegt
sicher nicht daran, dass wir denken, sie seien es nicht wert, erwähnt zu werden. Vielleicht liegt es einfach daran, dass Obtained Enslavement nie als
führende Kraft in der norwegischen Black Metal-Szene angesehen wurde und uns ihre Einzigartigkeit und Brillanz vergessen lässt. Sie sind
wahrscheinlich eine der ersten Bands, die man als symphonischen Black Metal bezeichnen kann, aber ihre Musik war trotz des starken
Keyboard-/Orchestral-Backgrounds im Vergleich zu anderen symphonischen Bands einfach viel härter und kompromissloser. „Soulblight“ und
‚Witchcraft‘ waren großartige Alben. Aber es gibt noch ein weiteres, das oft vergessen wird, vielleicht weil es ein bisschen anders ist als die beiden
eben erwähnten und sich musikalisch von ihnen unterscheidet. Die Rede ist von „The Shepherd and the Hounds of Hell“!

Zur Feier des 30-jährigen Jubiläums von The Charlatans drittem Album "Up To Our Hips" gibt es ab dem 08.11.2024 eine erweiterte Neuauflage der Platte. Das Set wird als 2LP, 2CD und digital erhältlich sein und neben dem Originalalbum zehn Bonus-Songs enthalten, darunter Live-Tracks und seltene Mixe. Das Album kommt mit einem neuen von Nik Void gestalteten Artwork und wird als petrolblaues Bio-Vinyl gepresst. Mit dem Album "Up To Our Hips", das 1994 erschien, schlug die Band eine neue Richtung ein. Es grenzt sich von den beiden Vorgängeralben ab, die wesentlich poppiger waren, klingt dunkler, schwerer und bedient sich vermehrt an Orgelklängen. Die Band hörte zur Zeit der Entstehung viel Musik von Künstlern wie Small Faces, The Beatles und Dylan und schaute David-Lynch-Filme. Zur gleichen Zeit gab es einige interne Schwierigkeiten. Viele Lyrics spiegeln diese Unruhe wider. The Charlatans, bekannt für ihre markante Mischung aus Hammond-Orgeln und Northern UK Soul, treibenden Gitarren und Tim Burgess" sehnsüchtiger Stimme, bleiben eine der prägenden Brit-Pop Bands der letzten Dekaden. Seit 1989 veröffentlicht die Band regelmäßig Alben, von denen drei die Spitze der britischen Charts erreichten. Trotz zahlreicher Herausforderungen - Nervenzusammenbrüche, Suchtprobleme, damit einhergehende Geldprobleme und der tragische Verlust zweier Gründungsmitglieder - haben The Charlatans sich immer wieder neu erfunden und erfolgreich Musik veröffentlicht.

Es durfte nichts gefälscht, neu aufgenommen oder überspielt werden, nichts bereinigt werden. Das moralische Diktat, live darzustellen, wer Talco ist, mit der Musik, Entschlossenheit, den Witzen, dem goliardischem Unsinn, der Herzlichkeit der Menschen, all das musste erhalten bleiben und daher "wahr" sein, nicht perfekt oder künstlich, sondern wahr. Ein echtes DIY-Projekt, an dem die gesamte Talco-Familie mitgewirkt hat: von Tontechnikern Matteo "Houdini" Piccolo - der alle Live-Auftritte der Tournee aufgenommen hat - und Edoardo "Dodi" Pellizzari (Overdrive Recording Studio), der das Album abgemischt hat, bis hin zu den Beiträgen der gesamten Band, die während einer anderthalbjährigen Europa-Tournee aufgenommen wurden. The two separate double vinyl sets are now available that correlate to the triple CD released earlier this year. TMTCH stumbled into existence onstage at the Alternative Country Festival, Electric Ballroom, Camden on Easter Sunday in 1984; after a long afternoon busking and drinking in a Hammersmith subway. They knew three chords and a hundred songs all of which sounded a bit the same, a frenzied skiffle that was exciting to jump around and drink snakebite to. If they thought about longevity at all, a lifespan of 40 days seemed most likely. It's forty years later and they are still running. Since those early days, and without much of a game plan other than always stepping onward, TMTCH have released around 20 albums plus many side projects, bootlegs, curios and an unknown number of T shirts. They've toured constantly, whether in dingy pub backrooms or Grand Ballrooms and Festival Stages. From Cairo to Reykjavik and all points in between, the TMTCH roadshow has shambled and thrilled through the decades, always passionate, always literate, occasionally dishevelled. Forty years of recording has spawned a vast back catalogue, well represented here by songs from each album, style and era; a tapestry of human stories and vibrant characters. So there are the fast sprints like early folk hoedown 'Ironmasters', the frantic shanty 'Raising Hell' and the amphetamine punk blues of 'Going Back to Coventry'. Then there are the waltzing folk ballads, from their impassioned version of the anti war standard 'Green Fields Of France' to the bitter regret of 'The Bells' and the righteous testimony of 'Our Day'. Elsewhere there are anthems galore; 'The Crest' a swirling gaelic chant, 'Rosettes', a fast marching assault of drums, fiddles and mandolins; historical epics such as 'Ghosts Of Cable Street', 'Shirt of Blue' and 'The Colours'; romantic ballads like the wistful 'Parted From You' and 'Island in The Rain'. All the eras are here; from the wiry lo fi of the first album, through the eighties into full blown MTV ready multi trackers with vast charging drums; the initial simplicity of their recipe deepening and darkening. And then on through the nineties, noughties and tens; always the double pronged vocals drifting between harmony and unison, always the celtic, folk and country tones vying for attention, the emotive fiddle, the top end mandolin above the thundering rhythm section. On through bouffant hair, spiky hair, dyed hair, thin hair and hats; on through Grunge, Baggy, Madchester, Rave, Britpop. On through the Miner's Strike, Poll Tax, New Labour, Iraq and Brexit. On through marriage, children, loss and revival. Forty years at the working end of rock and roll is a feat achieved by very few bands. It requires tremendous chemistry, a deep catalogue; both panoramic and miniature, a vital and irrepressible energy, all of which is on resplendent display in this sprawling 3 disc compilation. Italy’s cult heavy rock band DEATH SS will release their new studio album “The En” early next year. The concept album was
produced by mastermind and onan Steve Sylvester along with the English Grammy winner producer Tom Dalge (Rammstein,
Ghost, The Cult, a.o.).
The rst single ‘Dr. Jekyll & Sister Hyde’ is a powerful dark metal song in pure DEATH SS sle, which ironically quotes the 1971
Hammer Producon lm of the same name. As in the lm and the song's amusing promoonal video clip, the story is set in late 1
century London, where Dr. Jekyll, the famous character om Gothic con created by the writer Robert Louis Stevenson, gives life to his
evil alter-ego Hyde, who however in this case is a woman.

Plastic Crimewave Syndicate returns with one collective foot in overdriven space-biker scuzz rock, but the other bigfoot kicking upward into new galaxies of synth punk, no-prog, and freek funk. Yes, dare we say it, the new PCWS LP, Tales From the Golden Skull, GROOVES--but from the perspective of the Japan n' Kraut/Eurorock undergrounds, coated in some nasty Windy City grime. Aided by the Chicago Cosmonaut Couriers Crew, ala famed renaissance man Mac Blackout (synths/horns/electronics), Przemyslaw Krys Drazek (trumpet) of longtime zone-jammers Drazek Fuscaldo/Mako Sica, Will MacLean on Moog keytar (!-- of local Silver vocoder-ed Apples lovin' treasures Protovulcan), plus the oldest-school synthlord Bil Vermette, who's been modulating since the 70s. We'll call Tales From the Golden Skull a near-concept lp (aren't they always?) that looks back at fallen friends and collaborators, and then into the unwritten golden future (as PCW himself hit the golden 50). The sonic journey dips into dark textural valleys, and chugging riffs rising to thee fiery heavens, as the thundering-but-subtle rhythm section of Jose "Beast but Best" Bernal and Rob "Dead Feathers" Rodak know when to crash and when to burn (one). Sir PCW lays down his trademark big muff-blastage and echo-cries, to channel the despair and feral bark of the mighty Vega/Hammill/Iggy/Dickie P/Haino/Mojo-Risin/Mizutani, but also knows when to shut up for some layered instrumental Embryo/Harvester/Fausty trance rock and dabbed/dubbed out "not-quite-shoegazin" calmness in the eye of the Ur-storm. This might be the most expansive, detailed yet furious PCWS LP yet, recorded at Rec Room studios with Eric Block, who has done all from a band with Sonic Youth's Steve Shelley to recorded Rhys Chatham 100+-peeps guitar orchestras. Lebensjahr Klavier spielte und Unterricht erhielt, studierte er bis zu seinem ausgezeichneten Master-Abschluss im Jahr 2020 Informationswissenschaft und -technologie an der Universität Tokio. Noch vor Abschluss seines Studiums gewann er 2018 als Außenseiter völlig überraschend den Grand Prix bei einem der wichtigsten Klavierwettbewerbe Japan - dem PTNA-Wettbewerb. Der Gewinn war der Startpunkt seiner Karriere als professioneller Pianist. Im Anschluss nahm er für ein halbes Jahr Klavierunterricht bei Jean-Marc Luisada in Paris und avancierte seitdem auf einer Welle der Begeisterung zum Klavier-Superstar in Japan. So spielt er am 14. Juli 2024, seinem 29. Geburtstag, ein Klavierrecital vor 14.000 Menschen in der ausverkauften Tokioter Konzerthalle Nippon Budōkan.Internationale Aufmerksamkeit erregte er 2021 beim Internationalen Chopin-Wettbewerb, wo er mit seiner hervorstechenden Interpretationen das Halbfinale erreichte. Im April 2024 feierte Hayato Sumino sein spektakuläres Debüt in der Royal Albert Hall mit seiner Aufführung von Gershwins "Rhapsody in Blue", die sowohl online als auch im Konzertsaal für Aufsehen sorgte. Names You Can Trust presents the third release in its Swing-A-Ling "Now Sounds" 7-inch series, a limited collection of record presses celebrating the label's long-running summertime Jamaican music dance and cookout that takes place in the relatively undiscovered enclaves of the Flatlands neighborhood of Brooklyn. In the spirit of the Swing-A-Ling event, the "Now Sounds" series focuses on the unreleased, never-to-be-released, or utterly underground gems that may have otherwise been locked in the vaults for years to come. This year, the series resurrects a definitive tasty treat for the Fall and upcoming Halloween season, a picturesque capture of obscure early-70's cinematic darkness, featuring an ode to horror-style DJ toasting and its accompanying haunted hammond organ cut, courtesy of the curious and spectral stage name Vincent Price & The Young Spirits. As always, the Swing-A-Ling series has been touched up sonically at the NYCT studio HQ in Brooklyn, then mastered and cut by renown London engineer Frank Merritt at The Carvery for maximum sound system engagement.

Pioneering electronic force Sasha has found plenty of success in recent creative partnerships. The Last Night On Earth founder has worked with the likes of Super Flu and Sentre and dropped a steady stream of fresh solo sounds such as 'Florian Drift' and 'How to Wear Raybans Well'. All this means he continues to lead the melodic house and techno scene from the front with expertly crafted sounds. Here, he works with Jody Barr who has long been close to this label having also established himself with music on Krankbrother, Configurations Of Self and Nofitstate. He heads up Portable Minds and is renowned for his rugged, hardware-centric sound.

'Phaxon' is a beautifully elegant affair with shimmering chords rising and falling over a serene electronic groove. It's packed with smart sound design and subtle touches that make it glow from start to finish as the emotions build and sweep you up into a delightful dance floor reverie.

Hamburg's Einmusik has a cultured techno sound that has lit up his own self-titled label as well as the likes of Diynamic and Sincopat. His version is more rugged with a darker feel thanks to the rasping bassline that rumbles below. There is still plenty of great chord work but the whole track is a little more direct for poignant club deployment.

Jawad Nawfal and Mazen El Sayed, better known by their stage names of MUNMA and EL RASS, met for the first time in Beirut, during the summer of 2011. A common friend told Jawad wonders about an MC who rapped and slammed in the classical Arabic language, as opposed to the vernacular Lebanese dialect. The two musicians met in a small café in Beirut’s Hamra neighborhood, spoke of music, argued about politics, and decided to collaborate at once. They began working on tracks the following day. A month later, they had already produced a dozen sketches, instrumental beds and accapella vocal tracks. These demos eventually landed in the hands of Ziad Nawfal and Fadi Tabbal, who set out to bring to life the duo’s first recorded album. “Kachf el Mahjoub” (the title is from a Sufi master-work penned some 900 years ago) was eventually released as a limited edition of 500 CD’s, during a launch event at then-budding alternative venue Metro al Madina in Hamra, on the 22nd of February 2012. These CDs went out of print in record time, as can be expected, and the album’s mythical status became reinforced over time – El Rass & Munma collaborated sporadically during the next ten years, but never fully grasped the level of musical intensity and explosive tension attained on this first outing. It has been a longstanding dream of ours, here at Ruptured, to produce a vinyl version of this album, and we are thrilled to say this moment has finally come. Artist ALI RAFEI’s original artworks have been painstakingly reproduced, the music has been dutifully remastered for vinyl by CEDRIK FERMONT, and the records were pressed by our friends at Mother Tongue in Verona. We added bonus track "Fi Kala'at Tarablus" to this 10th anniversary reissue for good measure – recorded during the same sessions that yielded “Kachf el Mahjoub”, it appears on the digital version of the album. “Kachf el Mahjoub” is a landmark album in Lebanon’s alternative music scene, and the MENA region’s hiphop and indie scenes writ large. At the time of their collaboration, El Sayed was a prolific writer and musician, at ease with a variety of instruments, notorious for his masterful flow in the classical Arabic language, with lyrics tackling both social and political sensitive subjects; Nawfal has previously released an impressive number of albums and EPs, exploring downtempo electronica and ambient dubstep, for a number of Lebanese and international labels. The collision of the former’s brazen, slammed vocals and the latter’s harsh beats works wonders on “Kachf el Mahjoub”, Munma’s sound-world perfectly fitting El Rass’s agitated discourse, alternating between broken beats, elaborate percussion, and ambient layers of synths. At times reminiscent of mutant hiphop outfit Shabazz Palaces, at others of the collaboration between dubstep producer Kode9 and the late vocalist The SpaceApe, this album is an uncanny meeting of Arabic hip-hop and electronica, an exceptional event in the realm of contemporary Lebanese alternative music.

Shir Khan marks the 37th release on his infamous Black Jukebox imprint with an all-killer balearic house record courtesy of mysterious Cécille-affiliated Cabin Luv Affair hot on the heels of his debut album which has seen support from Fouk, Laurent Garnier, Jamie Jones, Mr. V and Archie Hamilton.

Here, the masked master lays out 4 convivial cuts that sit in a particular pocket between House and Disco; one that has historically been occupied by the likes of Pepe Bradock, Damiano Von Eckert and Andrés. A spot classically characterised by beautifully imperfect, sample-heavy productions that are shot through with palpable depth and soul.

The record sets sail with ’Te Siento’. Polyrhythmic percussion bubbles across the surface of a deep sonic pool that forms a bed for vivacious drums, romantic vocals and a spine-tingling strings riff. A hazy opening clears out before the backbone of recording shines through; an uplifting 90s piano motif that's later picked up by Xylophone tones while a tight, truncated bass line punches away at the track's core.

'Dance With Us' then rolls out a beautifully seductive mood. Softly shifting synth chords, a loose-limbed drum break and hedonic vocals whip up a hot and heavy vibe that shines with a distinctly Chicago-tinged elegance.

'Time Is Killing Us' follows up with an immaculately executed, 'last tune' House groove. A gentle but powerful euphoria is generated with swooning strings, more giddy piano riffs and another robust drum track that all gather momentum as progress rolls on. An ecstasy-crescendo forms before it crashes and fizzles before the lights go on.

'My Head Like Shibuya Crossing' then follows up with a tightly-knitted Deep House cut. Buttery melodies adorn an effortlessly kinetic bass groove before a delicate Japanese vocal bleeds into focus. As is the case with much of the record, the track graciously segues through its chapters with melody at the fore-front before bringing the record to a conclusion.

Musik, Klänge und Rhythmus schienen ihn zu durchströmen, und das war kein Wunder. 1940 in eine musikalische Familie geboren, war er ein überdurchschnittlicher Student und schloss sein Studium mit einem Bachelor of Science in Psychologie und anschließend einem Master in beruflicher Rehabilitation ab. Und doch war die Musik nie weit von ihm entfernt. In den späten 1960er Jahren schloss er sich einem Trio an, das vom Pianisten George Duke geleitet wurde, und arbeitete daran, das Singen zu einer Vollzeitbeschäftigung in Los Angeles zu machen.

Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hörte ihn Siggi Loch, der damals ein hochkarätiger Manager bei Warner Brothers Records (WEA) war und später ACT Records gründete. "Ich sah Al Jarreau 1974 zum ersten Mal im Troubadour in Los Angeles und war sofort von seiner Stimme und seiner Bühnenpräsenz gefesselt", erinnert er sich. "Am nächsten Tag ging ich zu Mo Ostin, dem Präsidenten der WEA, um ihn davon zu überzeugen, ihn zu unterschreiben." Nach anfänglichen Widerständen erhielt Loch grünes Licht und 1975 erschien Jarreaus Debütalbum für WEA, "We Got By". "Ich habe Al nach Deutschland gebracht, bevor er in den USA Erfolg hatte", fährt Loch fort. "Al trat drei Nächte lang in Hamburg auf und ich schaffte es, Michael Naura, den Chef der Jazzabteilung des NDR, davon zu überzeugen, den dritten Abend für die Live-TV-Übertragung aufzunehmen." Diese Show machte Al über Nacht in Deutschland berühmt, und seitdem hat er immer einen besonderen Platz in den Herzen des deutschen Publikums. "We Got By" gewann den Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik und seine erste Deutschlandtournee füllte große Konzertsäle.

Es folgte "Glow" (1976), das in Europa erneut gut ankam und einen zweiten Preis der Deutschen Schallplattenkritik gewann, in den USA aber nicht so gut ankam: "Das richtete sich an ein 'Smooth Jazz'-Publikum", so Loch. "Es hat Al nicht vor einem Live-Publikum eingefangen. Also bat ich darum, dass seine nächste Veröffentlichung ein Live-Album sein sollte. Mo Ostin stimmte widerwillig zu", und "Look to the Rainbow" wurde in Europa ein Riesenerfolg, "Als es in den USA veröffentlicht wurde, wurde es Al's Durchbruchsalbum und brachte ihm seinen ersten Grammy ein, also ist es wirklich richtig zu sagen, dass seine Karriere vor allem in Deutschland begann!", sagt Loch.

Jarreaus langjährige Zusammenarbeit mit dem NDR veranlasste Jörg Achim Keller, Chefdirigent der NDR Bigband, 2016 eine Zusammenarbeit mit dem Sänger vorzuschlagen: "Eine Produktion mit der Musik von Al und Ellington zu machen, war etwas, was ich schon seit Anfang der 2000er Jahre machen wollte", erinnert er sich. "Die Reaktion von Al war von Anfang an sehr positiv." Jörg bereitete eine Liste von einigen hundert Ellington-Titeln vor, und wie sich Jarreau später erinnerte: "Wir gingen einfach die Liste durch, und es war ein Fall von 'Oh, der funktioniert für mich' und 'Lass uns das als alten Darm-Blues machen – was für mich wichtig war, war, mich in der Musik wiederzufinden und vielleicht eine andere Art von Aussage über Ellington zu machen, damit die Leute die Musik auf eine andere Art und Weise hören konnten. alles, was sie vorher gehört hatten."

Beim Schreiben der Charts achtete Jörg darauf, Jarreaus Herangehensweise an das Material zu respektieren, indem er ihm Raum ließ. Tracks wie "I'm Beginning to See the Light" oder "I Got It Bad (and that Ain't Good)" geben den Solisten der Band ebenfalls Spielraum, um ihr Bestes zu geben. Diese Tabelle wurde zweimal überarbeitet, bevor er schließlich damit zufrieden war! Bei einigen Songs entschied er sich für einen reinen Balladenstil – 'I Got It Bad (and that Ain't Good)', einige Melodien wurden in eine Pop/R&B-Tasche gesteckt ('Lush Life', 'Come Sunday') und er liebte das 'Old Gutbucket Blues'-Feeling von 'I Ain't Got Nothing but the Blues'."

Rückblickend auf diese Sessions und Tour sagt Jörg: "Es waren Al's Stil und Persönlichkeit, die alles zusammenhielten. Das Ganze war eine echte Kombination aus der musikalischen Meisterschaft von Jarreau und Ellington – es hat das Publikum in ganz Europa angesprochen, sie liebten das Programm." Dieses Gefühl teilt auch Siggi Loch, der Jarreau mit der NDR Bigband in Paris erwischte: "Es war offensichtlich, dass er es wirklich genoss, diese Musik aufzuführen, und er tat es mit so viel Energie und Emotion, es war eine Freude zu sehen und zu hören. Leider verstarb Al nur wenige Monate später."

In vielerlei Hinsicht schließt sich mit "Ellington" ein Kreis: Es fühlt sich sehr richtig an, dass Jarreaus letztes Album auf ACT veröffentlicht wird, dem Label, das von Siggi Loch gegründet wurde, dessen starkes und unerschütterliches Eintreten für den Sänger ihn ursprünglich auf den Weg zum Superstar brachte. Und die Tatsache, dass es vom NDR und seiner hauseigenen Bigband aufgezeichnet wurde, ist eine passende Erinnerung daran, dass es sich um eben jenen Sender handelte, dessen TV-Sendung Jarreau einst über Nacht in Deutschland berühmt gemacht hatte. Darüber hinaus wurde "Ellington", genau wie "Look to the Rainbow", das Jarreaus internationales Durchbruchsalbum war, auch live aufgenommen. Manchmal gibt es Verbindungsfäden zwischen Ereignissen, die auf den ersten Blick in keinem Zusammenhang zu stehen scheinen, und das Ergebnis erweist sich nicht nur als besonders und magisch, sondern auch bedeutungsvoll und tief berührend. Das ist hier auf jeden Fall der Fall.

Anadol and Marie Klock have teamed up for a joint album, La Grande Accumulation. They met two years ago at a festival in England crowded with violent seagulls and outsider musicians. Klock being prone to barking on stage and Anadol not laughing at jokes she doesn’t find funny, they straight away had the intuition that they would meet again. And so they did, a few months later, at Anadol’s studio in Istanbul.

Today, the two Pingipung artists present the fruit of this musical friendship. La Grande Accumulation was born out of the peculiar atmosphere of the studio neighbourhood in Büyükada, an island where thousands of cats run free and humans randomly destroy things during apocalyptic times when parts of Turkey had just been turned into dust by terrible earthquakes. The French lyrics are inspired by hours of conversations, the music is consequently drenched in absurdity, overflowing with a strong urge to live and enjoy. According to the LP sticker, this album has been certified “Best handshake of 2024”, and stickers never lie.

La Grande Accumulation brings together Marie Klock's mysterious metaphors and Anadol's intriguing radiophonic psych-pop. Stretching forms beyond common sense to see how long they can resist is probably their favourite game. The result are six highly imaginative tracks that challenge the sub-3-minutes standards of Spotify pop.

Gözen Atila aka Anadol is well known to the Pingipung audience, with three solo LPs on the label. Her music follows a kind of collage logic, she interweaves countless styles, combining field and studio recordings with obscure quotation marks here and there. "I hope no one will come and explain this music to me, because it's the most beautiful music there is", says Kristoffer Cornils about her solo album Felicita.

Marie Klock is a French writer and musician who produces songs oscillating between synthpop and neo-folk, full of anarchic humour and existential dread. Her recent solo LP on Pingipung was a captivating tribute to the recently deceased poet Damien Schultz entitled Damien est vivant.

Marie Klock delivers her lyrics in song or spoken word, stream-of-consciousness musings on strange human adventures, and her rich keyboard melodies culminate in a nonchalant dialogue with the bass trombone (La Reine des Bordels). In the opulent opening piece (La Grande Accumulation), a woman is cursed to take home everything she kicks in the street; a bit later, we stumble upon a ghoul hiding in the gutter (Sirop amer), Mona Lisa loses her teeth (Sonate au Jambon) and a warthog struggles to climb the stairs of a silver tower (Sabots triviaux).

La Grande Accumulation was mixed and mastered by Jonas Romann at Chaos Compressor Club in Hamburg and cut to vinyl by Kassian Troyer at D&M in Berlin. It's an audiophile LP that invites to focus on every detail in this heap of musical ideas.

es gibt Leadgitarren und schnelle Parts in Hülle und Fülle. Der Kontrast ist der Schlüssel zum Erfolg, und jedes stampfende, niedergeschlagene Riff

From the early 1960s to the late '80s, A&M was one of the most eclectic and powerful independent record labels in the world. The roster of artists who recorded there includes The Carpenters, Captain Beefheart, The Police, Joe Cocker, Suzanne Vega, Procol Harum and Janet Jackson, among others. Founded as an independent company by Herb Alpert and Jerry Moss in 1962, soon the label garnered interest and success, and was acquired by PolyGram in 1989. Throughout its operations, A&M housed well-known acts such as Sting, Sergio Mendes, Supertramp, Bryan Adams, Burt Bacharach, Liza Minnelli, Paul Williams, Quincy Jones, Cat Stevens, Peter Frampton, Carole King, Extreme, Joan Baez, the Human League, Soundgarden, Duffy, and Sheryl Crow, among others. Reissue of the debut album on A&M Records by jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery, released in 1967. It reached #1 on the Billboard Jazz album chart and #2 on the R&B chart. Considered by far the best of his three albums on A&M (in partnership with Creed Taylor’s CTI Records), A Day in the Life features a plethora of star sidemen, such as Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, Ray Barretto and Grady Tate, among others, as well as superb arrangements by Don Sebesky.

The title combines numerous recordings which featured on a series of demos and underground releases unleashed primarily in the more formative years since Hellripper mastermind James McBain created the band in 2014. Commencing with 2015’s initial recordings of the cult The Manifestation of Evil demo, Complete & Total Fucking Mayhem offers fifteen anthems to the dark side, with a masterful repertoire of pure, raw, unadulterated high octane blackened thrash/speed metal.

Inspired by the likes of old-school legends including Venom, Kreator, Sabbat JPN and Metallica, James McBain formed Hellripper in 2014 and with the release of the debut EP The Manifestation of Evil shortly after, the Scottish band was already making a very clear statement of hellish destruction with an electrifying brand of blackened thrash. Building on the momentum of the debut EP with a string of split releases, the debut album Coagulating Darkness was released in 2017 to media acclaim, with the UK’s Metal Hammer hailing Hellripper as “Scotland's King of the arcane mosh” & the band receiving attention throughout Europe and the US. This was followed by the EP - Black Arts & Alchemy, before an eventual deal was inked with Peaceville, resulting in 2020’s The Affair of the Poisons, leading on to 2023’s monumental breakthrough release, Warlocks Grim & Withered Hags.

Also Jay's TR808 is on there (thx Jay!) and a TR8 being squashed through a Mutronics Mutator (wheee Damo!) and a Zoom H4n recorder. I edited them on a dilapidated laptop, with no headphones or monitors, steering by the tiny speakers on the computer and playing them in my car, twiddling the mix as I went. Nach der Veröffentlichung ihrer Debüt-EPs, sowie den Singles "Raingurl" und "Drink I"m Sippin On" in 2017, war sie auf Charli XCXs 2019er Album "Charli" zu hören, remixte Songs für Dua Lipa oder Robyn, kollaborierte mit dem Seouler-Künstler OHHYUK, verkaufte weltweite Headline-Touren aus und eröffnete ihren eigenen Lifestyle Webstore JI-MART. Ihr Sound und ihre Einflüsse sind dabei so vielschichtig wie ihre Herkunft. Geboren im Jahr 1993 in New York reicht ihr Stammbaum von Seoul über Tokyo bis nach Atlanta - Einflüsse die sich in ihrer Musik in Form von koreanischem Indie-Rock und Electronica, 2000er Hip-Hop, sowie Leftfield Bass und Techno wiederfinden. Mit ihrem 2020er Mixtape "WHAT WE DREW“ schärfte Yaeji noch mal ihre Vision als Musikerin, die kreativ losgelöst von Sprachen Genre-Grenzen zu sprengen vermag - kein Wunder, dass sie daraufhin von Pitchfork 2022 zu einer der "25 Artists Shaping the Future of Music" ernannt wurde. Die nahe Zukunft wird sie ebenfalls prägen. Schließlich erscheint am 7. April nun endlich das Debütalbum "With A Hammer" bei XL Recordings. Entstanden innerhalb von zwei Jahren in New York, Seoul und London kurz nach der Veröffentlichung des Mixtapes und während den Lockdowns ist es eine Ode an die Erforschung ihrer selbst, setzte sie sich doch dabei mit ihren eigenen Emotionen auseinander - besonders mit ihrer eigenen, in ihr brodelnden Wut. Während sie textlich zwischen englisch und koreanisch springt, nutzt sie erstmals auch Live-Instrumente, sei es in Form von einem Ensemble an Musikern oder auch zum ersten Mal sie selbst an der Gitarre. "With A Hammer" beinhaltet darüber hinaus auch Features der Produzenten und engen Verbündeten K Wata und Enayet, sowie Gast-Vocals der Londonerin Loraine James und von Nourished by Time aus Baltimore.

Pøltergeist haben bei Bad Omen Records (Watch Hazel, Satan's Satyrs) unterschrieben, und die Kanadier veröffentlichen ihr Debütalbum. Pøltergeist wird als eine Mischung aus Post-Punk, traditionellem Metal und Shoegaze aus den frostigen Ebenen beschrieben und spielt treibenden Coldwave, der einen Weg von den Katakomben in den Kosmos zeichnet. Die vielleicht prägenste Destillation des Pøltergeist-Stils kommt mit der Vorab-Single 'Children Of The Dark', einem eingängigen, stürmischen Rocksong, der auch thematisch auf einer doppelten Ebene funktioniert. Sänger Kalen Baker hegt seit langem eine Vorliebe für die mystischen Metal-Klänge von Angel Witch, Cauldron oder Blue Öyster Cult und war sowohl von der zeitgenössischen Post-Punk-Band Spectres als auch von der britischen Melancholie von 'Script From The Bridge' der Chameleons berührt. Ganz zu schweigen von Gothic- und Post-Punk-Legenden wie Sisters Of Mercy, The Sound und Paradigmen des Himmlischen wie Cocteau Twins, Slowdive und My Bloody Valentine. Gestärkt durch den lyrischen Einfluss spiritueller Vorläufer wie Moorcock, Lovecraft, Poe und David Lynch von Twin Peaks wurde der Sound von Pøltergeist geboren; ein düsteres, aber magisches Reich, in dem dämmrige Intensität in einem psychischen Kampf mit metallischer Stärke verbunden wird. 'Nachtmusik' bleibt Bakers Vision eines "Kaleidoskops aus Emotionen, Klängen und Ideen" treu. Dies ist eine Platte, die sich im Herzen nach dem spirituellen Reich der 1980er Jahre sehnt, aber mit den Füßen fest im Hier und Jetzt des 21. Jahrhunderts steht. Während sich am Himmel Gewitterwolken zusammenbrauen, beginnt Pøltergeists Reise in die Dunkelheit gerade erst.

Lonnie Smith (1942 – 2021), was an American jazz organist. He was part of several vocal ensembles in the 1950s, includ- ing the Teen Kings which included Grover Washington Jr. Art Kubera, the owner of a local music store, gave Smith his first organ, a Hammond B3. Smith’s affinity for R&B mixed with his own personal style as he became active in the local music scene. In 1965 he met guitarist George Benson. The two con- nected on a personal level and formed the George Benson Quartet, featuring Lonnie Smith, in 1966. After two albums under Benson’s leadership, Smith recorded his first solo al- bum ‘Finger Lickin’ Good (Soul Organ)’ with George Benson and Melvin Sparks on guitar, Ronnie Cuber on baritone sax, and Marion Booker on drums. This combination remained stable for the next five years. After recording several albums with Benson, Smith became a solo recording artist and sub- sequently recorded over 30 albums under his own name.
Numerous prominent jazz artists joined Smith on his albums
and in his live performances, including Lee Morgan, David “Fathead” Newman, King Curtis, Blue Mitchell, and Joe Lova- no. The album ‘Finger Lickin’ Good (Soul Organ)’ showcases Lonnie Smith’s virtuosity and his innovative approach on the organ, with tracks that feature intricate solos and groovy rhythms so typical of the soul jazz and jazz funk genres. Lon- nie Smith was named 9 times “the best organist of the year” by the Jazz Journalists Association.

This release comes as a limited edition of 750 copies on smoke coloured vinyl.

The Leeds jazz scene is the gift that keeps on giving. From the dub-leaning ambience of Submotion Orchestra through to the afro-jazz fusion of Nubiyan Twist and TC & The Groove Family, a multi-generational lineage has emerged. Adding yet another page to the eclectic story of jazz from the city, emerging punk-jazz upstarts Plantfood announce the imminent arrival of their debut album ‘Carnivores’ on Friday 4th October via Bridge The Gap.

Consisting of JJ Petrie (percussion), Ruben Maric (keyboards), Joe van der Meulen (tenor saxophone), Woolley (baritone saxophone), Finn Hamilton (drums) and Woody Hayden (bass), Plantfood began in the throes of lockdown, during which all the members lived together. The group spent day after day sharing their eclectic music tastes, ranging from the electronic punk of The Prodigy and art-rock of Black Country New Road, through to the jazz dance of Steam Down and The Comet Is Coming. Taking these influences, they crafted their own sound, but without live shows, their only audience was the plants in their rehearsal room:

“We called the band Plantfood because we were writing and rehearsing in one of our bedrooms which was full of house plants. The plants kind of became our only audience, so it was like the music was food for the plants.”

The band’s debut album ‘Carnivores’, plays on this theme, referring to the plants as carnivores for consuming the bands music, whilst also reflecting the apocalyptic palette of sounds and chaos found within the record. However, mirroring the dynamism of a Plantfood live show, the album is anything but one-dimensional. The group expertly balance moments of serenity and vulnerability with cataclysmic urgency, all brought together under the guidance of producer David Haynes (TC & The Groove Family, Nubiyan Twist). The group share:

“The album’s moments of vulnerability and hope are intended as the depiction of a return-to- earth theme (circle of life, growth and decay), reflecting that the cycle of nature is not simply destructive.”

The project’s lead single ‘Y.U.S.’ drew praise from tastemakers including Jamz Supernova on BBC Radio 6, with the track featuring the talents of UK-Palestinian MC Yung Yusuf, a serial collaborator who also appears on album closer ‘Monstera’. Both tracks channel Plantfood’s explosive live energy into a blend of afro-latin rhythms and broken grooves, with the distinctive blend of tenor and baritone saxophone weaving in and out of grime-leaning, poetic exchanges with Yusuf.

Elsewhere, the second single from the project ‘Birdgang Pt. II’ is a fresh take on the band’s contemporary jazz sound, blending jazz, Balkan folk and Moroccan rhythms with a punk edge. The album’s title track resets the balance, soothing the soul through a swirling approach to spiritual jazz that wouldn’t be amiss amongst the Gondwana Records catalogue.

Alt-Rock pioneers Stone Temple Pilots fourth studio outing celebrates 25 years in 2024. Sonically soaring from grunge to glam, psychedelic to stadium rock, The album boasts the band's Billboard Top 100 hit "Sour Girl" as well as fan favourites like "Down" and the Rogers and Hammerstein-evoking "Atlanta." It is an album, as Stereogum put it, that is "a misunderstood masterpiece from a great band that never got their due as being great"

Elephant9 begründeten ihren Ruf als Live-Powerhouse schon lange vor ihrem Albumdebüt im Jahr 2008 und haben seitdem sechs weitere Studioalben sowie die beiden Doppel-Live-Alben Psychedelic Backfire I und II im Jahr 2019 veröffentlicht, letzteres mit Gastgitarrist Reine Fiske, dessen Lieblingsgitarrist zufällig Terje Rypdal ist. Da beide Alben vergriffen sind, ist Catching Fire eine höchst willkommene Ergänzung ihrer Diskografie. Aufgenommen bei einem bemerkenswerten Konzert von 2017 in Oslo - Rypdal würde in diesem Jahr 70 Jahre alt werden. Catching Fire hat Gemeinsamkeiten mit klassischen Live-Alben von Mahavishnu Orchestra, ELP und King Crimson, vor allem, was das Energieniveau und den Sinn für ungezügelte Intensität angeht. Dennoch gibt es auch ruhige Passagen, vor allem im 22-minütigen Opener, in dem sich Rypdal mit einigen typischen, gletschermelodischen Linien vorstellt. Rypdal ist die ganze Zeit über Feuer und Flamme für Lead-Action, heftige Rhythmusarbeit und abstrakte Akrobatik aus seinem Werkzeugkasten.Terje Rypdals Hauptwerk ist bei ECM erschienen, zunächst als Mitglied des Jan Garbarek Quartetts (Afric Pepperbird, 1970) und mit seinem ersten Soloalbum Terje Rypdal (1971), das bis zu Conspiracy (2020) insgesamt etwa 30 Veröffentlichungen umfasst.Ståle und Terje teilen ein gemeinsames musikalisches Verständnis, das daher rührt, dass Ståle seit fast 30 Jahren die ,rechte Hand" des Gitarristen ist, sowohl im Studio als auch auf der Bühne. Torstein und Nikolai sind die solideste aller Rhythmusgruppen, ein gut geölter Motor, der Finesse und Kraft vereint.
