"My singing style is without vibrato, as is the singing style of most of the people in the world. The voice part I have kept simple, intentionally, so that I and many others who like to sing such songs, including the barbershop quartet people, would be able to sing them. As I did on the record, the voice part should be sung by one voice or in unison, but not in harmony, because the harmony is exclusively in the piano parts, which are more complicated than the voice parts, especially in the canons and the obligati, which carry the main melodic burden." Art Blakey, Live in ’65 boasts an exceptional one-hour concert from Paris in 1965. This performance showcases one of the few undocumented Blakey bands, the New Jazzmen, featuring Freddie Hubbard on trumpet, Jaki Byard on piano, Reggie Workman on bass, Nathan Davis on sax, and, of course, Blakey on drums.
Freddie Hubbard’s incendiary playing on “Blue Moon” and the blistering 24-minute version of his own “Crisis” shows that he was one of the most innovative trumpeters in jazz history.

On this live session, the audiences seem to have been enthusiastic and appreciative. “Everywhere we’d go people would say, This is the best Jazz Messengers we’ve heard!”, according to Davis. “And because of the way Jaki would play and Reggie would go, it was like a semi-freedom thing – with Messengers heads, you know, but when we got to soloing…! And Blakey was ridin’ and floatin’ the time…but he would always be loose enough to follow, to keep it going. He’s one helluva musician.”

Mal-One’s new five track 12’’ offering has broached the tender subject of the bedroom wall and what as a teenager we would cover it with, as we revelled in our teenage glory. at the Lyceum Ballroom on The Strand. In doing so he found some likeminded souls and more importantly people the
same age that he could relate to and forge an identity with.

‘Well let me tell you a little story that should not be forgotten something i’ll call the ballad of Johnny Rotten’

As the opening line states in Mal-One’s latest single release, Mr Rotten lead the charge and in many respects took most of the impact. Whether that be from the media, the government, the people or in fact from his own management. His stance and attitude made it all the easier for us all to follow through the many doors he pushed open.

Although Neil Young mentioned his name in song many years ago, Mal-One felt that his deserved the full nine yards, or 3 minutes. So here is his heartfelt sonnet to the man. They took his name away and forced him out of the country. The leader of the pack and come judgement day he will be the one who cannot be forgotten..

Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers - A Night In Tunisia
Dieser Albumklassiker ist ein Paradebeispiel dafür, wie Art Blakey den jungen Talenten in seiner Band eine
Plattform zur eigenen Entfaltung bot. Er lässt sie nicht nur ausführlich in ihren Soli zu Wort kommen,
sondern vertraut auch blind auf ihr Können als Komponisten. Einzige Ausnahme im Repertoire ist der
Bebop-Klassiker von Dizzy Gillespie, der diesem Album aus dem Jahr 1960 seinen Titel verlieh.

BLIND EGO ist zurück! Der Gitarrist der deutschen Vorzeige-Artrock-Band RPWL Kalle Wallner hat sein Versprechen wahr gemacht und ein neues Album aufgenommen. "The Hunting Party" drückt im Vergleich zu seiner Hauptband RPWL das Pedal deutlich zugunsten von Rock- und Metal-Elementen durch. Seit dem Debut aus dem Jahre 2007 ist der neue Longplayer bereits sein fünftes Studio-Album. Dazu erschien 2017 ein Live-Album und 2022 sein "beinahe-Instrumental"-Album "Voices" unter eigenem Namen. Wallner scheinen die Ideen und die Lust am Produzieren nicht auszugehen - trotz seiner Hauptband RPWL, dem eigenem Label Gentle Art Of Music, seinem Tonstudio und vielen weiteren Projekten als Produzent und Gitarrist. Dabei stand die Tour des letzten Albums 'Preaching To The Choir' unter keinem guten Stern. Für viele Fans waren diese Konzerte im Frühling 2020 die letzten unmittelbar vor dem Corona-Lockdown und für viele Monate die letzten Konzert-Erlebnisse. Zum großartigen Gesamteindruck des Albums trägt neben Wallners außergewöhnlichem und markantem Gitarrenspiel vor allem der talentierte und erstklassige Sänger Kevin Kearns bei. Kearns, der bei seiner eigenen Metalcore-Band Cyant normalerweise ganz andere Töne anschlägt, entpuppt sich als Idealbesetzung: er interpretiert die Songs auf 'The Hunting Party' ganz besonders emotional, nimmt einen durch alle leisen und lauten Passagen mit - mal schnörkellos, mal filigran, aber immer höchst ausdrucksstark und voller Energie strotzend.?Dazu gesellen sich erneut Ausnahme-Drummer Michael Christoph und Wallners langjähriger musikalischer Weggefährte Yogi Lang (RPWL), der dem Album nicht nur als Mitproduzent und Keyboarder seinen Stempel aufdrückt, sondern sich auch für den glasklaren Mix und das Mastering verantwortlich zeigt.
Kevin Kearns führt hier den Hörer atemberaubend durch alle emotionalen Höhen und Tiefen, ehe die Wogen ruhiger werden und der längste Song des Albums mit einen wunderschönen Gitarren-Solo schließt. Nicht zuletzt wegen solcher Soli fällt einem bei Wallner sehr schnell der Vergleich zur Pink Floyd-Ikone David Gilmour ein. Dieser zentrale Song umfasst sehr gut dieses emotionale und abwechslungsreiche Album.

Citirax's next outing takes the form of a debut album from Los Angeles-based duo OP-ART. This pair, like so much great music of recent times, is born out of the creative isolation of lockdown and features Andrew Clinco, who you may know for his work with Drab Majesty. The alias they have adopted is an acronym of "Oblique Pleasures Amidst Rough Times" which they say reflected the challenges of their formation. Musically the duo is inspired by the 1960s visual art movement so embraces layered, psychedelic soundscapes with a minimalist approach and takes cues from New Wave artists like John Foxx and early OMD. This album marks Thelonious Monk's sole recording as a member of Art Blakey's celebrated Jazz Messengers. The pianist and drummer were very close friends who understood each other well on both a personal and musical level. In fact, Blakey was present on both Monk's first and last studio sessions, spanning a period of 24 years from the 1947 quintet and trio recordings to the last sets taped in London in 1971, when Blakey and Monk were touring with the group called the "Giants of Jazz" (which also included Sonny Stitt, Dizzy Gillespie, Kai Winding and Al McKibbon). With the exception of Johnny Griffin's "Purple Shades", all of the compositions on this album are classic Thelonious Monk tunes.

"Allegra Krieger’s ""Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine"", her second full-length album with Double Double Whammy, is a collection of 12 songs that pick at the fragile membrane between life and death.

Krieger’s previous album, ""I Keep My Feet on the Fragile Plane"", hewed more closely to the domestic spaces of city and mind. Rolling Stone regarded the album as “ten songs of heady philosophical meanderings packed with emotional dynamite,” and likened her “finely phrased lyrics” to those of “Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and David Berman.” Krieger’s existential meditations remain on ""Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine"", however her meandering melodies have taken on a stronger sense of direction. She narrates candidly and assertively; the full-band arrangements never overpower, only offer a robust platform on which Krieger’s voice reaches new heights.

The full band brings a heightened sense of drama to the album’s arrangements, which contrasts the quieter approach of Krieger’s previous LP. There are noisy interludes, jazz-inflected discursions, impactful stops and starts, and occasional spaces for Krieger to stretch out her impressive vocal range (most prominently at the dazzling climax of album stand out “Came”). In ""Art of the Unseen Infinity Machine"", Krieger invites us to a place where transfiguration is not only possible but actively happening. From this place, the beautiful and the banal and the terrible are all laid out before us. And Krieger asks us not to look away. Instead, she invites us to stare down the beautiful and terrible in the world, and to realize that sometimes the only way out is through."

From the first bars of the immediately recognizable ‘Alamode’, this album is an explosion of beauty. This first sextet iteration of Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers includes a young Wayne Shorter (tenor saxophone), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Bobby Timmons (piano) and Jymie Merritt (bass).
