The complete original Erroll Garner album Concert by the Sea (Columbia CL-883), which marked the pianist's best-selling record ever. There was actually no official plan to record the concert, and the release came about because Garner's personal manager, Martha Glaser, spotted that a tape recorder was running backstage and decided to use the tape, originally intended for the Armed Forces Radio Network. Obwohl der Bariton Johnny Hartman bereits in den 1940er Jahren mit den Orchestern von Earl Hines
und Dizzy Gillespie sowie mit dem Pianisten Erroll Garner aufgetreten war, erlangte er erst 1963 durch das
brillante gemeinsame Album mit John Coltrane große Bekanntheit. Bob Thiele produzierte für Impulse!
Records anschließend noch zwei Soloalben mit dem Crooner, die seine samtige Stimme und seine subtile
Phrasierung in den Vordergrund stellten. “The Voice That Is!” entstand bei zwei Studiosessions unter
der Regie des Arrangeurs Bob Hammer. Am 22. September 1964 nahm Hartman mit einem Quartett um
den Pianisten Hank Jones jazzige Versionen von Standards auf. Zwei Tage später kehrte er mit einem
interessant besetzten größeren Ensemble ins Studio zurück, um Nummern aus populären Musicals und
Filmen einzusingen, denen mit Perkussion, Marimba, zwei Gitarren und Flöte ein lateinamerikanisches Flair
eingehaucht wurde.

Mit diesem außergewöhnlichen Doppel-Vinyl lässt sich die Musik aus den ikonischsten Filmen von Clint Eastwood neu entdecken. Als Schauspieler, Regisseur und Produzent zählt Eastwood zu den prägenden Figuren der internationalen Filmgeschichte - und hat über Jahrzehnte hinweg ein ebenso markantes musikalisches Universum geschaffen. Diese sorgfältig kuratierte Sammlung vereint Originalaufnahmen aus seinen Filmen und spiegelt die enorme stilistische Bandbreite wider: von Jazz-Legenden wie Charlie Parker und Duke Ellington über Soul- und Pop-Klassiker bis hin zu Orchesterwerken und traditionellen Stücken. Die Auswahl zeigt eindrucksvoll, wie entscheidend Musik für die Atmosphäre von Eastwoods Filmen ist - mal subtil, mal prägend, immer charakteristisch. Der große Clint Eastwood begann seine Karriere zunächst als Schauspieler, erlangte aber später mit Filmen wie Unforgiven (1992), für den er den Oscar für die beste Regie und den besten Film erhielt, und Mystic River (2003), weiteres Ansehen als Regisseur. Eastwood ist auch Pianist und Komponist, und seine Vorliebe für Jazz und Blues wird deutlich, wenn man die Musik hört, die er für die Soundtracks mehrerer seiner Filme ausgewählt hat. So verwendete er den berühmten Song "Misty" von Erroll Garner gleich in seinem ersten Film, bei dem er Regie führte, nämlich "Play Misty for Me" (1971). "Fred van Zegveld's album ""Dynamite,"" released in 1969, is a remarkable showcase of his prowess on the Hammond organ. The album features a blend of original compositions and covers, all highlighting Van Zegveld's soulful and jazzy style. The album comprises nine instrumental tracks, with the majority being Van Zegveld's original works. Notable originals include ""Family Blues,"" ""Blue Organ,"" and the title track ""Dynamite,"" which are celebrated for their dynamic Hammond organ performances. The album also features covers such as ""Here, There and Everywhere"" and ""I Wanna Be Your Man"" by Lennon-McCartney, as well as ""Misty"" by Erroll Garner. The supporting musicians on the album include Ruud Jacobs on bass, Louis de Bey on drums, and Rick Beekman on guitar, all contributing to the album's rich and engaging sound. Finally available again on vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies on translucent red coloured vinyl."

Ever since the 2003 release of her debut, Another Mind, Hiromi has electrified audiences with a creative energy that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. On her most recent album, Silver Lining Suite, Hiromi further exemplifies her virtuosic hybridity and emotional range, finding strength and hope amidst the turmoil of the pandemic. 
 

Born in Hamamatsu, Japan in 1979, Hiromi’s first piano teacher, Noriko Hikida, exposed Hiromi to jazz and introduced her to the great pianists Erroll Garner and Oscar Peterson. She enrolled in the Yamaha School of Music and started writing music. 

 

Hiromi moved to the United States in 1999 and studied at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. Among her mentors was jazz bassist/arranger Richard Evans, who took Hiromi’s demo to his friend, the legendary pianist Ahmad Jamal. Evans co-produced Another Mind with Jamal. 

 

Another Mind was a critical success in North America and Japan, where the album shipped gold and received the Recording Industry Association of Japan’s Jazz Album of the Year Award. Hiromi’s astonishing debut was but a forecast of the shape of jazz to come. 

 

In 2009, she recorded with pianist Chick Corea on Duet, a live recording of their concert in Tokyo. She also appeared on bassist Stanley Clarke’s Grammy-winning release, Jazz in the Garden. 

 

In the summer of 2021, Hiromi performed at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics.

To abandon animals for music – and avant-garde jazz at that –, could seeming shocking to some people. However, it is exactly what Manuel Villarroel did, as he was a vet for three years before leaving his native Chili for Europe and a career in music. And though the animals may have suffered, the world of music can be grateful.

Born in 1944, Manuel Villarroel lent an ear to the best pianists from North America: Oscar Peterson and Erroll Garner then Herbie Hancock, McCoy Tyner and Cecil Taylor. Manuel left Santiago in September 1970 to participate in the Contemporary Music Workshop in Berlin. To pursue his musical career, he rapidly decided to remain in Europe.

The following year in Paris, Manuel began a quartet with saxophonist Jef Sicard (who would also play with his brother Patricio, in the Dharma Quintet). But the group would rapidly expand: Villarroel and Sicard added Gérard Coppéré (saxophone), William Treve (trombone), François Méchali (bass) and Jean-Louis Méchali (drums). And with the arrival of Sonny Grey, a Jamaican trumpeter heard ten years earlier with Daniel Humair, the Matchi-Oul Septet was complete.

Complete and ready: on May 8th, 1971, Matchi-Oul was in the studio for Gérard Terronès’ Futura label. The septet recorded seven of the pianist’s compositions. A succession of tracks which flow magically from one to the next: from the first drum strokes to the last deep notes of the bass, the successive waves roll over the piano and whistle through the wind instruments. And when they all come together it gives even greater force to Villarroel’s beautiful songs. Terremoto is a masterpiece of collective expression: but what else could we expect from a “supergroup’’ of this stature?
