Soreab – Sensitivity 6.0 Soreab debuts on Avian.
Dario Picchi, whose repertoire includes forays into Dancehall, Bass Music and genres less easily classified, alongside a spate of intriguing collaborations, keeps things sparse on Sensitivity 6.0. The six track EP offers up idiosyncratic takes on IDM, Techno and Ambient music with a focus on intricate sound design, showcasing the Baroque Sunburst label head’s admirable versatility as a producer.
Brazen opener Squirrel Stampede might surprise listeners expecting a more delicate approach from the EP title. Neatly layered and economic in its execution, it’s a forceful slice of modern Techno. Meditative follow up Trub marries a thick, undulating percussion line with a saccharine melody. Loose synths emerge sporadically from the sonic periphery, breaking up the rolling drum pattern to create a cinematic atmosphere. Closing out the A side is Giale Draws, an intriguing beatless piece with nods to both vintage Musique concrète and more contemporary compositions from the electronic music leftfield.

Swedish disruptors SHXCXCHCXSH return to Avian.

Following on from 2018’s SHULULULU EP, the duo are back channeling their sound-design focused experimentalism into a brace of characteristically high energy recordings. Melding contemporary explorations in rhythm and texture with more traditional club tropes, Kongestion places recognizable leitmotif’s from the dance music continuum in the context of the pair’s inimitable production prowess

A1 Kong and follow up Onge offer two takes on a similar template that marry a stepping kick drum pattern with dense, ever-shifting granules of processed white noise. The mentasm sample, that will become a recognizable device across the EP’s course, provides it’s own twisted energy – front and center on the former, and sunk – but no less effective, on the latter. With Nges SHXCXCHCXSH draw on their beatless material for inspiration, inviting a more musical sensibility into the work. What begins life as a staccato, monotonal recording develops slowly and organically into an emotive patchwork piece – drawing on the mentasm, but this time twisting it further and introducing a bassline and shuffling hats. Relentless rhythm track Gest follows – a dense, thorny construction that segues neatly into Esti, another more caustic composition that places it’s focus on intricate, delay-driven sound design with ghostly lead tones that operate just below the surface. As the record approaches it’s close, the duo showcase their range with Stio – a pulsing, meditative ambient cut. Final track Tion wraps up the EP neatly, acting as a fulcrum for the themes explored so far. Bending the mentasms into a hook, the artists create a wall of undulating sound, broken by sporadic kick drum hits and propelled forward with percussive strikes that run through the track before dissolving into soft reverb tails.

The award winning Danish producer and live performer, also known for
her extensive compositional & soundtrack work for video games,
international theatre and dance productions – as well as her own
installation projects, debuts on the Avian label with ‘Entangled’. Forged
in the unique crucible of SØS Gunver Ryberg’s multidisciplinary
practice ‘Entangled’, stalks a hard line at the edge of techno’s stormiest
sector. A thrilling meeting of divergent disciplines and sound system
metrics with a keen skill for the composition of uncompromising club
works, Ryberg’s technique lies in the vital declaration of her own
borders in every setting. Comprised of six club focused pieces, the mini
LP applies itself to rhythmic intensity with a deft touch. Galloping
granulated walls envelope you at every turn as brittle melancholic pads
ease you from one moment to the next. ‘The Presence_Eurydike’ is the
gentlest form that Ryberg is willing to present, whereas ‘Trispider’
builds a monumental terror out of a raw pulse. It’s at these moments
that you sense the careful composition and orchestral drones, and how
keenly Ryberg’s rough modulation is meant to alter states. Displaying
varying approaches to form and structure across the record, the music
riffs on the brooding atmosphere characteristic of the artist’s collected
work by breaking up the havoc on ‘Entangled’ with a series of four
microcompositions spliced between each of the tracks. Finely textured
and rendered in detail they give a glimpse of Ryberg’s capacity for
mesmerising sound design – or to put it another way, they give a sense
of what’s barely contained by the rhythmic works. This is an expansive
and hard hitting rumination on the more caustic, atonal end of the
Techno genre – a truly dynamic and immersive listening experience.

Reeko debuts on Avian.

In recent years, the Spanish producer's name has become synonymous with exquisitely produced, hyper-functional Techno variants. Releases via Pole Group and Planet Rhythm as well as the artist's own Mental Disorder outlet have seen Juan Rico develop a distinctive sound that places elements of Noise & Ambient within a contemporary Techno framework - harnessing a dense, abrasive energy without compromising groove. Layers of ethereal pads, filtered noise and feedback FX are compounded into a tight, mono space, pushing back on powerful, propulsive low end - making for a decidedly heady listening experience.

On La Mala Educación, Reeko continues in this vein - though the work leans more towards the noisier, more industrial end of previous output. Across six tracks, the Spanish producer showcases a bipartite approach to form, as punishing dance-floor cuts Desfile Funebre de Rosas and Habitación 877 coalesce with more experimental, atmospheric recordings. Engendrado features a single warping sequence, pitching and bending over the course of it's four minute run time, while opener Carne y Demonio begins life as a shimmering, wide angle Ambient piece - before sinking deep into high-energy abstraction with a single feedback-heavy polyrhythm driving the work along it's course.

The finish on the material is harsh, and sounds meld together with considerable drama - but Reeko's real skill lies in the binding elements, the steely drones and machine hiss that hold the music together with considerable poise. Whilst La Mala Educación explores disparate expressions within the genre - the same mediative pulse runs throughout the EP, and this sense of cohesion combined with the admirable technical skill on display paints a picture of a producer in full control of his art.

Andre Gough debuts on Avian as Verge.

The Irish producer joins Shifted's label with an extended EP of exquisitely crafted, deeply emotive Noise trips.

Echoes of bonafide Industrial, more experimental post-Punk and New Wave run deep through Gough's warping eight track debut for Avian, and while listeners might find the principle emotion evoked by the heady, droning synthesis and warping guitar tones a palpable anxiety - at the base of each wide angle 'scape there's a glorious, overriding sense of melancholy.

Mournful melodies and carefully executed chord changes, at some points bold and direct in their implementation - at others more subtle, communicate a powerful, otherworldly yearning - drawing the work above and beyond more derivative exercises in the genre. Deceptively simple drum work underpins much of the material, stylistically funereal but with enough lightness of touch to generate an arcane, pulsing movement.

A robust and confident debut from an exciting artist, 'Emblematic Ruin' serves to further vindicate Brewer's vision of the Avian label as a more three dimensional artistic space, where propulsive, modern Techno derivates can sit comfortably in the company of more left-field electronic & acoustic excursions.

Originally released via Ascetic House in 2015, Vereker's Grace tape owes much to the canon of vintage anti-music, exploring catharsis via a transgression of traditional compositional & technical values. Working with the same thematic concerns of much of the more leftfield additions to the Avian catalogue - in it's more subdued moments, anxiety & dissafection; in it's more high energy - pure hysteria - the recording pairs basic synthesis with warped vocals in the same manner as Industrial progenitors Throbbing Gristle and Steven Stapleton (Nurse With Wound).

The reduced palette & crushed production aesthetic creates a powerful immediacy, with a twisted musicality being drawn - at times, kicking and screaming, out of the depths of the mix. Like much of Vereker's best work on labels like LIES & Berceuse Heroique, elements warp & twist uncomfortably within the tight confines of a reduced dynamic spectrum - creating a dark, heady energy.

Jamie Roberts is no stranger to the more experimental tenets of the Techno genre, and much of the British artist's output of late has hinted at more leftfield leanings. A recent return to Will Bankhead's Trilogy Tapes imprint saw a brace of meditative, post-Detroit workouts - employing the same heady, hardware aesthetic as much of his work on Ternesc - though at a drastically reduced tempo.

It's this same willingness to break down perceptions regarding his own music that marks Walk Type - Roberts' debut on the Avian label, as a notable chapter in the artist's discography.

In terms of aesthetic finish, AVN027 might be Roberts' most comprehensive and well articulated ode to the culture of machine music - but it's also his most organic offering. Corroded drones provide the basis for much of the material, pitching & bending at will - shifting & warping in and amongst furtive drum work, that by and large sits uncharacteristically deep in the mix.

For the most part the record eschews traditional dance floor functionality in favour of this rich, experimental premise - it's early moments are generally unclassifiable, though nods towards a caustic IDM variant offer some context. In it's later stages, the material moves tentatively closer to the club environment, as Robert's offers up a handful of anxious, low slung tools - that, whilst not straying far from the crushed, greyscale tone of their predecessors, round out an enviable addition to the Avian catalogue.

Avian's first release since absorbing its sister label Mira comes from Chicago based musician Connor Camburn under the alias Litüus, with an entirely beatless collection that well establishes Avian as the home for the kind of searching electronic experimentation that would have been found on the ten-inch focused imprint that Shifted recently announced would merge with its parent label. The EP follows previous cassette releases under the Litüus name for Brave Mysteries, Notice Recordings and Mazurka Editions and comprised entirely of real time single-take recordings on hardware instrumentation.

Shorn of percussive elements yet not without their own rhythmic structures, Camburn's six compositions are free of immediate electronic genre influences and instead draw primarily on non-musical inspiration in addition to various other contextual reference points, as he sought to express ideas of the unraveling or "de-composition" of musical or architectural spaces through musical forms imagined as inverted contours and negative spaces.

Avian's 16th release is coming from Alessandro Cortini under the name Skarn. Best known for his work with Trent Reznor both in Nine Inch Nails and How To Destroy Angels, the Italian producer just recently made his debut on Hospital Productions with the hugely acclaimed 'Sonno' LP.

His new project Skarn sees Cortini take a turn into more technoid driving soundscapes, which makes Shifted's Avian label the perfect fit for it. The EP features three tube driven noise workouts with a precise minimalism and a hypnotic drum pattern, which leads the way through the release.

Avian presents the second part of the Lessons In Hate series from the enigmatic techno act 'A Vision Of Love'. Two stripped down and hard-hitting techno tracks expose the series' basic themes of SM, vintage gear and a passion for classic second wave Detroit music.

With the relentless and dashing beats of 'A Modern Romance' on the A-side, accompanied by the relapsing cries of 'An Education' on the flip side, the release follows the aesthetics of the first instalment issued earlier this year...
