"Ko te reo Maori, he matapihi ki te ao Maori" lautet das Maori-Whakatauki (Sprichwort), an dem sich der Aotearoa-Singer/Songwriter Marlon Williams (Kai Tahu, Ngai Tai) bei seinem vierten Soloalbum "Te Whare Tiwekaweka" orientiert hat. Übersetzt bedeutet es "Die Maori-Sprache ist ein Fenster zur Welt der Maori" und drückt Marlons Motivation für sein erstes Te Reo Maori-Album aus. "Durch den Entstehungsprozess dieser Lieder", sagt Marlon, "habe ich eine Möglichkeit gefunden, meine Freuden, Sorgen und meinen Humor auf eine Art und Weise auszudrücken, die sich sowohl deutlich neu anfühlt, als auch mich mit meinen Tipuna Vorfahren und meinem Whenua Land, Heimat verbindet." Diese Verbindung steht im Mittelpunkt von "Te Whare Tiwekaweka", der Marlon wieder mit seiner Familie, seinen Freunden und seiner Heimatstadt Lyttelton zusammenbringt, nachdem er ein Jahrzehnt lang um die Welt gereist ist, um seine Karriere aufzubauen. Das Album stellt einen weiteren Schritt in Marlons Reise mit seiner angestammten Sprache dar. Seine Fähigkeiten in dieser Sprache entwickelten sich in den Stunden, die er mit seinem engen Freund und Co-Autor, dem Rapper KOMMI, verbrachte. Die Sprache brachte sowohl eine neu entdeckte lyrische Ehrlichkeit als auch eine großartige klangliche Vision hervor. Unterstützt von der langjährigen Tourband The Yarra Benders, dem Co-Produzenten Mark Perkins (Te Whanau-a-Apanui), den Sängern von He Waka Kotuia und einer Zusammenarbeit mit Popstar Lorde, durchquert das Album Marlons vertrautes Folk-Country-Bluegrass-Territorium, während er gleichzeitig seine Erkundung poppigerer Gewässer und der inhärenten Rhythmen der Maori-Musik fortsetzt. Das Ergebnis ist eine Sammlung, die zeitgemäß und zeitlos zugleich ist.
