Label owner Gianluca Caiati recognised as Kaiser is back on his own imprint with a new EP called Controcorrente. To the DJs, for the DJs. To the club, for the club. What is written behind this new story?

The story of So-Do is both familiar and completely unique. A classically trained multi-instrumentalist with a poet’s sensibility and a passion for folk music meets a worldly bar owner with a love for psychedelia, post-punk and dub in the small town neither could bring themselves to leave. Over two years, they play dozens of shows in independent live houses across Japan, cut and self-release three singles – two 7”s and a 12” – and leave behind just eight tracks, all of which are set to be reissued for the first time forty years on.

So-Do’s Studio Works ’83-’85 collects the full output of this iconoclastic post-punk phenomenon, whose sparse, syncopated arrangements were infused with a dubbed-out flair that owed more to Dennis Bovell’s productions of Orange Juice, the Jah Wobble basslines of Public Image Limited or Adrian Sherwood’s live dubs of Mark Stewart than even they knew at the time.

Because for lead songwriter Hideshi Akuta, music offered an escape from the existential malaise of small-town life, folding a melancholy nihilism into tracks like ‘Kakashi’ and ‘Hashiru’ (which translates as ‘run’), or taking aim at the inequalities and creeping apathies of the middle classes, as he does on ‘Get Away’ and ‘Nothing’.

And if Talking Heads had CBGBs, Sex Pistols had the Roxy, then So-Do had Buddha. Influenced by Buddha venue owner and amateur producer Atsuo Takeuchi, Akuta turned So-Do’s sound towards dub, crafting playful, ironic and funky compositions that crackle with live energy at the vanguard of Japan’s nascent independent music scene.“So-Do is hard to explain,” Takeuchi says. “It’s been a struggle for years to try to find the words for our music.” The answer perhaps, is just to listen.

Both familiar and completely unique, So-Do extend Time Capsule’s genre-defining exposition of Japan’s reggae-inspired music of the ‘70s and ‘80s, as collected on the label’s two critically acclaimed Tokyo Riddim compilations, and London-based live outfit Tokyo Riddim Band.

Embracing the rip-it-up-and-start-again ethos of the early ‘80s, So-Do burned bright for a short time and then burned out. Their legacy is about to be reignited. Expect it to catch alight once more.

ascha Funke is creating a long overdue monument to an almost forgotten cultural artefact of the GDR: the ‘Germina Speeder’ was the only skateboard made in East Germany before reunification and was launched in 1986. It was produced by VEB Schokoladen-Verarbeitungsmaschinen (a state-owned chocolate processing machine factory) in Wernigerode and was therefore affectionately known as the ‘chocolate board’. However, it was hardly suitable for actual skateboarding due to technical inadequacies. It is not known whether Sascha himself owned such a board, but the tracks on the ‘Germina Speeder’ EP definitely roll better than the original. The opener ‘Blaupunkt’ breathes the euphoric spirit of the legendary Berlin club ‘E-Werk’, while the title track would have been more at home at the ‘Dubmission’ parties in the Turbine. Sascha leaves the 90s behind with radiant positivism; ‘Bo Knows’ sounds more like a 2000s open air at Café Schönbrunn. The EP closes with ‘Mastermind’, a high-octane psy-proghouse banger that, like all four tracks, quotes the past but still has both feet on today’s dance floors. Or rather, is dancing. 4:1 for love!

Sascha Funke setzt einem nahezu vergessenen Kulturgut der DDR ein längst überfälliges Denkmal: Der “Germina Speeder” war vor der Wende das einzige in Ostdeutschland hergestellte Skateboard und kam im Jahre 1986 auf den Markt. Es war ein Erzeugnis des VEB Schokoladen-Verarbeitungsmaschinen aus Wernigerode und wurde daher liebevoll auch als “Schoko-Board” bezeichnet. Zum eigentlichen Skateboardfahren war es allerdings aufgrund von technischen Unzulänglichkeiten kaum zu gebrauchen. Ob Sascha selbst ein solches Board besaß ist nicht überliefert, aber die Tracks auf der “Germina Speeder” EP rollen allemal besser als das Original. Der Opener “Blaupunkt” atmet den euphorischen Geist des legendären Berliner Clubs “E-Werk”, während der Titeltrack eher bei den “Dubmission” Parties in der Turbine gelaufen wäre. Mit strahlendem Positivismus verlässt Sascha die 90er; “Bo Knows” klingt eher nach einem 2000er Open Air am Café Schönbrunn im Volkspark Friedrichshain. Die EP schließt mit “Mastermind”, einem hochoktanigen Psy-Proghouse Knaller, der wie alle vier Tracks zwar das Vergangene zitiert, aber dennoch mit beiden Füßen auf den Tanzflächen von heute steht. Beziehungsweise tanzt. 4:1 für die Liebe!

In ihrer bisher zwölfjährigen Band-Historie veröffentlichten Nicolás Jaar und Dave Harrington, zusammen bekannt als DARKSIDE, die beiden Alben ""Psychic" (2013) und ""Spiral" (2021). Mit ihrem langjährigen Freund und Kollaborateur Tlacael Esparza als neues Bandmitglied und Schlagzeuger kommt jetzt ihr drittes Album ""Nothing". Das Ergebnis ist faszinierend und vielschichtig. DARKSIDE schmücken ""Nothing" mit prägnanten Rhythmen, verzerrten Vocals und kreieren eine ganz eigene, wie ungewöhnlichen Ästhetik.

Um die Entwicklung zu verstehen, muss man die Hintergrundgeschichte kennen: Jaar und Harrington lernten sich in den frühen 2010ern während ihrer Schulzeit in Providence kennen. Während der Tour zu Jaars Solo-Debütalbum fand eine spontane Aufnahmesession an einem freien Tag in einem Berliner Hotelzimmer statt. Die Session war wortwörtlich brandheiß, denn sie endete mit durchgeschmorten Lautsprechern. Der Raum füllte sich mit Rauch und der an diesem Tag entstandene Song wurde ihre erste gemeinsame Single ""A1", DARKSIDE war geboren.

Zwischen den ersten beiden Alben legte das Duo eine sechsjährige Pause ein. In dieser Zeit verfolgten Jaar und Harrington jeweils eigene kreative Wege: Jaar etablierte sich als Solokünstler und Produzent, während Harrington als innovativer Gitarrist und Experimentalmusiker die Underground-Szene in L.A. aufmischte und die Rock-Band Taper"s Choice gründete. Die Geschichte setzt sich dann im Herbst 2022 in Los Angeles fort als das Duo eine Reihe von Shows buchte, um sich nach acht Jahren erstmals wieder als Live-Band zu vereinen. Esparza kam als festes Mitglied hinzu und veränderte grundlegend den Klang und die Energie der Band. Die Idee von ""Nothing" entstand während der Suche nach Achtsamkeit und Harringtons stillen Momenten mit seiner neugeborenen Tochter, in denen er Schönheit im Nichtstun fand. Für Jaar wurde ""Nothing" zu einem Symbol für die allgegenwärtigen, wie überwältigenden Probleme, unausgesprochene Gefühle und den Stillstand in globalen Krisen wie Klimawandel, politischer Heuchelei und wiederkehrender Gewalt.

"The acclaimed 2007 album reissued on 1LP clear vinyl. Taken from the original 2007 masters when Pete Doherty was at the pinnacle of his creative powers, ‘Shotter’s Nation’ followed in the footsteps 'Down In Albion’, the band’s debut album, and Doherty’s first album outside of his first band - the era-defining Libertines. Both were met with commercial and critical acclaim, breaking into the top 10 of the album charts.

‘Shotter’s Nation’ is unmistakably Doherty. Melodic, stark, catchy, raw, brilliantly unique - his music has always created an unflappable loyalty from his many fans, remaining timeless, yet still sending a nostalgic excitement through its listeners. The album also features four songs co-written by Doherty’s then-girlfriend Kate Moss who also regularly performed live with them.

The approach to the recording and release of the album was an escape from Doherty’s previous methods. Stephen Street (The Smiths, Blur, Morrissey, The Cranberries) took over producer duties from The Clash's Mick Jones, and it was and his first album released by a major label, Parlophone."

Der Einstieg in die Musik von Q Lazzarus erfolgte für fast alle über „Goodbye Horses“. Der Song tauchte erstmals 1988 in Jonathan Demmes „Married to the Mob“ auf, aber er sollte sich erst dann vollständig im Bewusstsein der Menschen verankern, als er 1991 in Demmes „The Silence of the Lambs“ wieder auftauchte. „Goodbye Horses“ fühlte sich an wie ein in sich geschlossenes Universum - traumhaft und völlig ungewöhnlich, ein sofortiger Klassiker, der die Zuhörer fesselte und neugierig auf die geheimnisvolle Stimme dahinter machte. Diese Stimme gehörte Diane Luckey, einer einzigartig talentierten Künstlerin, deren Musik ihrer Zeit voraus war und die letztlich zu Lebzeiten weitgehend unerkannt bleiben sollte. In Verbindung mit der Veröffentlichung des Dokumentarfilms „Goodbye Horses: The Many Lives of Q Lazzarus“ von Aridjis Fuentes veröffentlicht Sacred Bones eine Sammlung von Songs, die die gesamte Karriere von Q abdecken und die verschiedenen Epochen ihres Schaffens und die ganze Bandbreite ihrer Persönlichkeit zeigen. „Goodbye Horses“ ist die erste Musiksammlung, die den Segen von Qs verbliebener Familie erhalten hat, und hat die Besonderheit, ihre erste und einzige Albumveröffentlichung in voller Länge zu sein. Tracks wie „My Mistake“ und „Hellfire“ flirten mit House-Musik und zeigen, wie frech und glockig Qs Stimme sein kann, wenn sie sich richtig austobt, während „Don't Let Go“ wie eine bombastische Radiosingle klingt, die Cher vor einigen Jahrzehnten hätte veröffentlichen können. Andere Songs wie „Bang Bang“ und „I See Your Eyes“ sind von einer gitarrenbetonten Alt-Rock-Sensibilität, die in einem Paralleluniversum auch auf MTVs 120 Minutes Show hätte laufen können. „Goodbye Horses“ verkörpert das Potenzial für so viele verschiedene Arten von Karrieren, die, aus welchen Gründen auch immer, nie vollständig verwirklicht wurden. Between A Rock And A Hard Place is the debut studio album by American hip hop duo Artifact, originally released in 1994. The recording sessions took place at Soundtrack Studios in New York, except for the song ""Cummin' Thru Ya Fuckin' Block"", which was recorded at Chung King Studios. The album was produced by T-Ray, Buckwild, Drew and Redman, with co-producers Rockwilder and Artifacts. It features guest appearances from Jay Burns Jaya, Redman and Busta Rhymes. The album debuted at number 137 on the Billboard 200, number 17 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 2 on the Heatseekers Albums charts in the United States. It was supported with three singles: ""Wrong Side of da Tracks"", ""C'mon wit da Git Down"" and ""Dynamite Soul"". Between A Rock And A Hard Place is available as a limited edition of 1500 individually numbered copies on gold coloured vinyl and includes an insert.

1021 is the third studio album from Toronto singer/songwriter, Rochelle Jordan. Originally released in 2014, 1021 is the album that forever changed Rochelle’s trajectory as an artist. Filled with moments of honest and pure self expression yet still showing signs of who she has eventually become, the album showcases Rochelle’s resilience as an indie artist, her unapologetic risk taking, and her drive and uncompromising belief in herself. The album’s production is filled with lush, airy, evocative beats, with her vocals drawing comparison to the iconic R&B superstar, Aaliyah - in fact, “Ease Your Mind,” was co-produced with Eric Seats, who produced the iconic Aaliyah track, “Rock the Boat.” Since then, Rochelle has gone on to become a major player in the R&B and dance spaces, most recently working with Kaytranada on his new album. ARE FROGS ELECTRIC is an absolute killer in the harddance/techno-genre. In the 90s it was huge in the North of France and Belgium to become one of the biggest hits in the 00’s Jumpstyle-era in a version of GREC C (Color Sound was a big hit in Metropolis, The Oh!, Le Captain,….)

This one contains a massive jumpstyle remix by MI37 (the alias of DJ W4cko), a more-commercial remix by Dirrrty Dirk and the original 90s mix.

Liverpool’s breakout techno star Massano’s second solo release on Drumcode, ‘The Lights’. Following this year’s stellar three-tracker EP ‘Telepathic’ after Massano’s track on last year’s Drumcode A-Sides Vol. 12, Adam Beyer welcomes him back to his imprint.

Massano’s rise continues meteoric, with thunderous festival performances at Tomorrowland, Kappa Futur Festival, Ultra, & ElRow, sold out headline shows at Mute, Brooklyn Mirage, and Hi Ibiza … alongside releases on Afterlife and his own label Simulate which reflects his technology-dominated futuristic vision.

With chart topping success and the prestigious honour of having a BBC R1 Essential Mix, Massano’s aggressively powerful techno and rattling, insistent percussion interspersed with strong melodic riffs is clearly in ever-increasing demand. ‘The Lights’: with typical insouciance, Massano audaciously and successfully melds contrasting scenes/cultures/times – a bubbling, arpy bass and breakdowns of melodic, ‘hammered synth’ notes bring a North African/Middle Eastern vibe, until an interlude of building tension, with demanding drums, siren call, hard stabby chords and a huge drop, introduces a spacey, dystopian, futuristic techno sound. Fast, furious, takes no prisoners, dancefloor-compulsive.

KEY Vinyls 47th release dives into a silver-plated, machine driven world crafted by Eduardo De La Calle: Kapila. Across four chapters, De La Calles veteran touch shaped by over 25 years of sonic innovation brings to the label a sleek yet abrasive metallic landscape.

The A side opens with Kardama, unfolding a funky yet metallic interplay with sharp bells and stinging rides slicing through a round, acidic bassline. The track proposes a wide spatial range of sounds, a continuous exchange and interplay of elements.

Khatvanga follows, soft yet needle-sharp a lullaby evoking complexity through simplicity. Deceptively minimalistic, its delicate construction disguises its robust power, marking a signature De La Calle moment: feeling held by a soft energy which is equally pungent. With Kankas, the tempo intensifies.

Rugged surfaces and strong high frequencies merge with a type of construction that leans heavily on rhythm, channeling the pulse of a machine in its element. And lastly, Kala mutates into a sci-fi fever dream.

Tense atmospheres build, the machines world grows fuller, and shimmering synths take on a life of their own. The result is a dense, captivating finale that mirrors the increasingly blurred line between man and
machine.

2025 Repress

Midnight In Tokyo 2, the second installment to the compilation series that rounds up hidden gems by Japanese artists that's perfect for listening at night in Tokyo, is here. This time the collection brings together some tasty electric jazz fusion from the '80s , compiled by Dubby, the man behind the online record store Ondas.

The compilation begins with "Hikobae," a dark and slow cosmic jazz by saxophonist Genji Sawai, followed by "Danza Lucumi," an odd Caribbean-style jam by Today's Latin Project, a band fronted by Tadaaki Misago of Tokyo Cuban Boys, with arrangements by Yasuaki Shimizu. "On The Coast" is a soulful and mellow vocal track arranged by Ryuichi Sakamoto, from guitarist Shigeru Suzuki's album White Heat, and fusion boogie cut "In The Hot City" is by Mr. Theodore, which was a one-off project by a mysterious artist.

The melancholic soul jazz number "So Long America" is the title track from the album Yasunori Soryo released in '82, following a stint in America with the band Brown Rice. "Twisty" is a tropical reggae tune from the album Samba Kathy, an underrated classic by Jugando which was released on Trash, a sublabel of one of Japan's finest jazz labels, Trio. "Samarkand" is an electric Latin jazz jam that sounds like something Miles Davis and Santana could have played on, performed by a Latin funk band from Fussa. "Imagery" is a primal African fusion track by Katsutoshi Morizono, a member of the prog rock band Yoninbayashi.

"Windmill" is the most acoustic sounding tune on this compilation, a breezy Brazilian affair with a Hermeto Pascoal feel. "Mystery Of Asian Port" is by the band Parachute, which consisted of Japa-nese fusion giants like Akira Inoue, Tatsuo Hayashi and Masaki Matsubara. The cosmic jazz record sounds like something Daniele Baldelli would play in his sets. "Bay Sky Provincetown 1977" is a classic Japanese fusion tune by guitarist Yuji Toriyama.

The set also features the mellow but danceable "Heatwave" by keyboardist Keiichi Oku, featuring a female vocalist (which some have identified as Rie Ida), and last but not least, closing out the 13 track compilation is "Day Dream At The Bob's Beach," a wonderful urban fusion with a beautiful vibraphone melody, from the Japanese fusion classic album that was a one-off project by studio musicians

Next in line, a crafty remixes pack of Ethereal Logic's second album "Intergalactic World Music". The A side has two uptempo tracks by S.Moreira (1/2 of Ethereal Logic) and the italian wizard Paolo Mosca, delivering versions that perfectly capture their club essence.

On the B side, more downtempo yet groovy approaches by another extended

Tony Price is a multi-time Juno and Polaris Prize nominated producer, having worked on a wide variety of records on labels like 4AD, DFA, Slumberland and more. “Requiem For The Ontario Science Centre” is Tony’s ninth full-length LP since 2017, following a series of acclaimed records on labels like L.I.E.S. Records and Telephone Explosion which received coverage and reviews from established outlets like Pitchfork and Resident Advisor. “Requiem For The Ontario Science Centre” pays homage to the beloved 1960’s Canadian landmark and renowned brutalist architectural marvel, which was abruptly closed in the summer of 2024.

The album features longtime collaborator and Caribou touring band member Colin Fisher on Saxophone. The music is Rich with kaleidoscopic saxophone loops, surrealist sound collages, and retro-futuristic synthesizer mirages and will surely resonate with fans of Boards of Canada, Terry Riley and Don Cherry’s “Brown Rice”

Zum ersten Mal seit seiner ursprünglichen Veröffentlichung im Jahr 1994 auf Vinyl erhältlich und jetzt auf über 2 LPs verteilt, um ein besseres Klangerlebnis zu bieten.

Das Doppelvinyl wurde von Frank Arkwright in den Abbey Road Studios geschnitten und von Robin Proper-Sheppard aus der Band betreut.

The God Machine waren eine alternative Rockband, die 1990 in San Diego gegründet wurde und in ihrer kurzen Lebensspanne zwei sehr einflussreiche Alben auf Fiction Records veröffentlichte, 'Scenes From The Second Storey' (1992) und 'One Last Laugh In A Place of Dying' (1994).

Jim Chancellor, Chef von Fiction, schreibt: "The God Machine sind einer der unbekanntesten Influencer dessen, was heute als Post Rock / Metal bekannt ist." Er zitiert Lobeshymnen von so unterschiedlichen Künstlern wie Tool, Rage Against the Machine, Mogwai, Converge und vielen mehr.

Arun Starkey von Far Out – The Independent Voice of Culture trifft den Nagel auf den Kopf, wenn er sagt: "The God Machine klingen wie nichts, was vor ihnen kam. Sie klingen wie The God Machine, was auch immer das ist, und der Name hätte nicht passender sein können."

Obwohl sie begeisterte Kritiken für ihre zwei bahnbrechenden Alben und Live-Auftritte als Support von Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, The Cramps, The Fall, My Bloody Valentine und The Jesus and Mary Chain erhielten, litt die Band darunter, zwischen zwei Stühle zu fallen, weil sie "zu Indie für das amerikanische Publikum und zu rockig für das britische Publikum" war.

The album, which features the previously-released singles "Berghain" featuring Barney Bones and "Cactus Water" is the culmination of Channel's steady ascent since he first broke through to public consciousness with his cult-classic debut single "Controller." Head Rush features all of the sounds that have come to be hallmarks of Channel Tres songs, but finds him incorporating musical influences not heard in his prior catalog, as evidenced by "Berghain" and other songs from the album including the Ty Dolla $ign-featuring “Holy Moly,” a visualizer for which is out now. The album arrives on the heels of two recent head-turning Channel Tres collaborations as well -- his contribution to KAYTRANADA's "Drip Sweat" and Jay Worthy, DāM FunK & ATrak's "105 West" alongside fellow LA legends Ty Dolla $ignand DJ Quik exemplify his versatility. Head Rush is a richly layered record, but one that feels totally intuitive, without a trace of doubt or self-consciousness.

The way “I’m Him” shimmers is balanced by the Estelle-featuring “We Hungry,” which nearly growls; the spare, percussion-forward Ravyn Lenaeduet “Need U 2 Know” (the stylization of its title a nod to Prince, one of Tres’s major influences) at delightful odds with the easy ride of “Gold Daytonas.” Head Rush shows the staggering array of styles Channel Tres can evoke. But that versatility is not the point in and of itself—the point is that all these component parts can be reassembled into something that feels uniquely personal, and honest. Through his career, Tres has blended recognizable genres, textures, and points of view into a truly singular form all his own. Longtime listeners will recognize in Head Rush the hallmarks of a Channel Tres record: a mastery of rhythm, the rare ability to make songs sinister and fluorescent at once.

But this LP also opens a new sonic world, one rife with unexpected terrain and hairpin turns—see the way “Type” takes what sounds at first to be a simple romantic boundary and stretches it out into an alien landscape. Or take “Berghain,” a song that nods to the kinetic live shows that became must-see events—a crescendo of interest that included his momentous Coachella 2022 performance and culminated, at least symbolically, with his early 2023 set at Berghain, the legendary Berlin club that has long been a musical hub of the Western world. “Berghain” is delirious but thumps almost impossibly hard, in line with the album as a whole—always molting, always ready to turn from the claustrophobic to the communal, as the pivot on “Joyful Noise” accomplishes so seamlessly. Head Rush also features some of Tres’s most deeply felt vocals to date, like the veritable bloodletting on “Two Ways.” And so the record, which also features Ty Dolla $ign, Thundercat, Teezo Touchdown, Watr, Barney Bones and Toro y Moi, marks a new era for Channel Tres, personally as well as artistically. “I’m older now, and the things that I’ve accomplished tell me I’m ready to do this,” he says. “You’ve worked your whole life for this, you’ve been able to do these shows and walk into these rooms and make these songs. We feel it's better that way, because the music of The Orb only has an intensive effect when taken in as a long playing full length. And it proves with this lovingly conjured collection of songs brought together like a collage. The first half of Okie Dokie showcase The Orb´s love for minimal Techno and Schaffel/Shuffle as it is so obviously present in the foreground, while the second half is only reserved to the classic Orb-ish ancestral domain.
