On a collision course with earth from the furthest reaches of the universe, The Colours That Rise announce their debut album “Grey Doubt’ on the inimitable Rhythm Section International. Comprised of producer duo Simeon Jones and Nathanael Williams, The Colours That Rise have previously turned heads with 2017’s “2020” EP released on Breaker Breaker (the label credited with breaking Ross From Friends).

We loved going to the Electric Ballroom to see the legendary Paul 'Trouble' Anderson who was killing it in there with Boogie, Electro, Hip Hop and Disco - he was such a huge musical influencer.
When he dropped 'Heaven and Earth' in the mid 80's, the joint went ballistic.

That tune ruled London and became not only a rare groove classic but remains a much loved staple of today's club scene - all because of Paul's exceptional ear for music.

The Game is a typical futuristic dramatic italo/synthpop-song from 1983 that became a Belgian underground classic. Most famous is its instrumental mix, an impressive, ahead of the game pre-acid house anthem, later sampled by Moodymann on "Dem Young Sconies". Still relevant almost 40 years later.

Canadian born, Berlin based producer Aquarian makes his full length album debutThe Snake That Eats Itselfon Bedouin Records.
This record follows his collaborative EPs with Deapmash as 'AQXDM" and is his first solo release since his 2016 experimental mixtape for Quiet Time. Nearly five years in the making, 'The Snake That Eats Itself' is Aquarian's most complex, diverse and emotive work to date, plunging his trademark UK sound-system/techno hybrids into a self-contained, cinematic universe streaked with heavy influences from industrial, IDM, drone and dark pop music.

It's written in Brooklyn, New York, in a deeply transitional, yet seemingly endless period preceding his relocation to Berlin, the title of the album refers to the Ouroboros, a mythological serpent symbolizing the cycle of birth and death and infinity itself.
'The Snake That Eats Itself' pits Aquarian's most abrasive and brutal moments next to his most wistful and introspective.

Viscerally thick layers of tape saturation envelop the album as sludgy synths ooze against brittle atmospheres; breakbeats fragment, explode and disintegrate into swarms of delay and noise; scorched, metallic percussion - sampled from a year-long demolition and construction project next to his apartment - forge the rhythmic backbone of the album. These elements, however, seamlessly make way to startlingly crystalline and shimmering ambient passages, offering a sense of reprieve and balance.

Limited hand written label 7" is for Indie stores only. On the heels of his debut LP, "How Do I Talk To My Brother?", Ben ventured to the west coast and was welcomed with open arms by fans of his sweet and uplifting soul music. The A-side, a cover "That's The Way It Goes by the Harptones, was recorded on a handheld cassette while performing live at a radio station. The B-side was recorded in Brooklyn upon returning from the tour and thus christening their newly renovated recording studio. So enjoy this unique little 45!

With half a dozen releases under his belt Glo Phase moves his warm analog shuffles into the wax frontier with this 7" single of downtempo jams.

Continuing the series of single releases from Carlton Jumel Smith's album "1634 Lexington Ave." is a beauty of a track in the form of "Ain't That Love". In soul music guitar doesn't always take lead the way it does here played by Seppo Salmi of Timmion house band Cold Diamond & Mink. You might know those tracks like Darondo's "Didn't I" or "Oh Love" by Iron Knowledge that begin with a guitar line that just freezes the heart.

And there's of course one soulful guitar man we can't leave out here. If Carlton ever put his Bobby Womack to the front, it might be the case with this mid-tempo shuffler. Carlton always sings like he's squeezing the last drops of emotion from the human race, but in this number he's really aiming for the cherry. Cold Diamond & Mink supply the right ingredients for the mix with a strong beat and mellowed out horn melodies.

If there's one single you want to pick from Carlton's album for those Autumn Sundays looking through the window or walking in the park, make it this one.

After inaugurating the label with a tape in 2015, our local friend Richard Brown (AKA Brown Irvin) returns to Motion Ward with an oblique two-track 12" entitled "Run Me That Soul". "Locution" flexes a wobbly equilibrium of dubbed dancefloor energy and amorphous acid while "Overcast" coats the B Side in a smeared gradient of ambient wash and shape-shifting stasis. A persuasive pair of parallel worlds for winding up and winding down.

Smiling C collaborate with Bahamian super talent, F.J. to compile a selection of six lost tunes from his catalogue. Many of these are first time to vinyl. TIP!

Fritz Bootle, Jr. (F.J.) created a unique blend of reggae and RNB while living on the Grand Bahama island in the early 90's. Subtly inspired by the Compass Point balearic locus of the nearby island of New Providence, and locally by a flourishing scene of soca, reggae, and disco. He developed this sound to fill a gap he saw in popular music.

He was fortunate to marry into a family that gave him unlimited access to work in the legendary studio on Freeport, G.B.I. Recordings, run by Frank Penn. Always more of a passion project, he would come up with these in the evenings after work, finding a way to blend all his different influences (Bob Marley, George Duke, Teddy Riley, Journey...). Fooling around with Cubase he navigated his way to this magical deep bass sound and new jack style drum programming. "That's The Way" is the retrospective collection of the best moments from his Bahamas chapter.

Classic risqué Jump Blues

We adore Big Star and Alex Chilton more than words can express. Being able to present two of Alex’s staggeringly beautiful demos on vinyl for the first time (on a cute picture sleeve 7", no less) is an absolute honour for us at Be With.

“It Isn’t Always That Easy” and “If You Would Marry Me” both sound like templates for some of Alex’s best-known Big Star numbers. These demos come from the transitional recording sessions he made with Terry Manning at the Ardent studio in 1969, but were missing from the vinyl version of the wonderful Free Again compilation that was released in 2012.

Caught between the end of the Box Tops and the birth of Big Star Alex’s song-craft was already remarkable - as these demos prove - and this release represents a fascinating, exploratory period in the career of one of pop’s most enigmatic talents.

“It Isn’t Always That Easy” is the real knockout. A tender, acoustic ballad that, stylistically, could have appeared Big Star’s “#1 Record”. Yes, it really is that good. A deeply affecting, ruminative lament that explores the ravages of Alex’s short career to date, it is also one of the sweetest and most delicate melodies he ever wrote. A song this stunning shouldn’t just be kept for the Big Star completists.

Over on the flip, “If You Would Marry Me” finds Alex in earnestly romantic mode. It’s just him and a piano, albeit one that is played in a poppy, uplifting fashion to complement the optimistic mood: “I could make you feel so glad inside and so alive” he confidently declares. It’s quite the gem. It really should be mandatory for this to be played at every wedding.

Unfortunately there seem to be no photographs of Alex from around the time he was making these recordings. But luckily we were put in touch with Pat Rainer who was photographing the Memphis music scene that Alex was still part of a few years later.

Happy to be described as “a friend with a camera who was hanging around”, Pat’s candid pictures of Alex included one of him asleep on the floor of the Ardent studio. Even though the photograph was taken 9 years after the demos were recorded, we think this intimate portrait makes a fitting cover for these equally intimate songs.

All that jelly and no toast' - like when you find a bomb tune that's unavailable on 12'. The new sublabel of 'Smile for a while' is exactly about this. Clubby House Music by well-established producers as well as from lesser-known guys.

French guy Alex Agore opens the EP with the Lowtone remix of 'What Did I Do' - cut-up Garage House to the maxx.
Max Chapman from London / UK delivers another belter. A bassline-driven organ House tune with a minimalistic but very effective set-up. Oleg Poliakov aka SKAT is one of the guys behind 'Circus Company.' He comes up with a sublime but powerful Tech House tune, in the original sense of the genre name. 'Jazzve' is a tune by Russian producer Mutenoise. It's maybe the most original, innovative tune on this EP. Full of surprises and cutting-edge elements - hard to compare to anything else around these days.

A little mystery goes a long way, but it's fair to say the appetite for unearthing those secret tunes and lost classics has rarely been stronger...

This EP is an excerpt from one of my live sessions performed with modular synthesizer and samples provided by Field Recordings. I'm focusing my attention to the sound design and mixing, evolving tracks structure.

The blues roots grow surprisingly deep in the Finnish music scene. From this fertile ground rises singer Emilia Sisco, who debuts on Timmion with her phenomenal single "Don't Believe You Like That". With her strong background in fusing blues, r&b and jazz, Emilia apparently slips also nicely into the dark soulful grooves of Cold Diamond & Mink.

In "Don't Believe You Like That" Emilia sets herself into the role of a mistreated lover, who still tries to see a speck of hope in the doomed relationship. By dubbing herself, and accompanying the lyric with graceful harmonies, she succeeds in building a powerful beat ballad, that should appeal to the darker end of the dance floor.

There's a special lane in history for soul music this understated. It's cool and intimate at the same time, like there's something dangerous lurking under the surface. So roll up something nice, if that's your thing, and hop along for the ride.

It is with great honour that Emotional Rescue comes back to the music of Jaki Whitren & John Cartwright for a special 7" of two previously unreleased songs on to vinyl for the first time in That Will Be That and This Time. Originally part of the International Times reissue project (ERC004) in 2013, the songs have previously only been available on CD and digital formats as 'out-takes'. However, all that time the plan was to release the songs as a stand-alone vinyl release at some point.
Discussion with John continued over the years and the plan was for a release as part of the label's fifth anniversary, until sadly the project was put on hold due to the untimely loss of both Jaki and John in late 2016. The recent repress of their masterpiece that is their privately pressed album, International Times, led to these songs being revisited for the first time since and so here at last are both available together, as much in homage to these two wonderful musicians. More than studio-plus recordings, That Will Be That actually appeared in rerecorded form on the couple's Rhythm Hymn album of 1983. Here though is the original (and superior) version, with all the hallmarks of classic Whitren and Cartwright song writing craft, musicianship and production skill. Again remastered by their son (and at the time, teenage drummer) Joby Baker, the song drips with a confidence of masters of their instruments, full heartfelt, righteous and as relevant today as then lyrics, all backed with some deep white funk and enough soul to move mountains. This is accompanied by one of their greatest compositions in the spine-tingling This Time. Only ever known on this live recording from Glastonbury Hall, Jaki's vocals and light accompaniment from John's keys let the song shine. If the sheer power of her voice and words don't move you, then something is missing in life. A pure, sad, joyous way to thank and remember this wonderful music and people.

Replaced That Bass is a collaboration for a heavy rotation on 180g vinyl only! David and Marcus pleased to get Jaw from DOP kissing their track Replaced with his unique voice, get crowned by the timeless Norman Weber's Back To The Roots Mix. The other side is draped by That Bass from youANDme feat. Gjaezon which was released on Rejected (digital), yet. Enliven got the chance to decorate it with their special remix. That's right, Distinction's 1982 jammer 'That's the way I like it' is back! Fully licensed in conjunction with the rights holders and remastered for 2018 by Above Board distribution. This one's long been at the top of the wants lists of DJ's and dancers for ages, a masterclass in UK Boogie flavour brought to you by the production and writing prowess of Roy Carter who was a member of the UK's legendary Soul and Funk legends Heatwave and who worked extensively with Central Line, Junior Giscombe, Dee C. Lee and many many more throughout his long career. Pretty much all of Distinction's output is tough to find with the majority appearing on tiny labels, and second hand prices for these gems are always on the high side with this particular 12" being one of the most sought after. This is a proper and full reproduction of the original Hansa 12" from 1982 with the added bonus of the 7" mixes being included of both 'That's the way I like it' and b-side winner 'Looking for love'. This one has been booted before with severely lacking quality control, but we are proud to say this reissue has been fully licensed and made using the original tapes with all remastering handled lovingly by Optimum Mastering, Bristol, UK. Created in 2006, SETENTA, the Latin Soul Band from Paris, spreads a unique mix over the world scene.

After sparkling debuts with their first albums Funky Tumbao (Hot Casa Records 2010), Latin Piece Of Soul (Hot Casa Records 2013), Paris to Nueva York (Latin Big Note 2016), following successful live experiences and strong links developed with New York and Joe BATAAN, the Latin soul legend, the French seven-piece combo is back with his modern definition of Latin music.

Composed and arranged collectively, this new opus mixes up Latin, Funk, Pop and Jazz, with the same percussive and strong vocal section, sung in Spanish, English, Creole and Yoruba, (cf. their arrangement of the traditionnal Rezo a Obatala). When Shirley's voice kicks in at around 15 seconds you know, in that spine-tingling instant, that you're listening to something very special. At the hands of producer Bill 'Bunky' Sheppard Shirley delivers an incredibly emotional performance straight out of the church where she was somewhat of a star working with the likes of the Argo and Ward Singers. And the B-side is equally stunning!

A collabo you couldn't make up. Ice-T & Charlie Funk team up with Hamburg's Mighty Mocambos for a funked up version of their single "Bounce That Ass", blending old school west coast vibes with raw funk recorded live to tape, guaranteed to get every dancefloor busy.

Ice-T & Afrika Islam aka Charlie Funk wrote history together. They made countless platinum LPs, won grammys and oscars and shaped rap music as we know it today with albums like "Rhyme Pays" and "Power". After two cassette releases for the likes of Tokyo's Solitude Solutions and Barcelona's Angoisse, Motion Ward is happy to present the debut of Kouhei Fukuzumi's Ultrafog project on the vinyl format. "How Those Fires Burned That Are No Longer" weaves through sliding metal timbres, textured air abstractions and wistful mallet sequences. This record, like all of Kouhei's work, is a take on sound as a representation of memory. Light and translucent, each song aims for a temporal snapshot that will inevitably fade into the well of thoughts and experience.

'I Know Myself' was sampled by 9th Wonder for his 'Easy' track.

Gloria Taylor was from Ohio and was discovered by a promoter and production manager for James Brown. They later married. Gloria recorded for King Soul from the late 60s. Her biggest chart record was the Grammy nominated 'You Got To Pay The Price' (1969) before a move to California and collaborations with Selector Sound/Columbia Records in the 70s. From these, the two songs presented here have become her most enduring and sought after. They are the most atmospheric and slow burning deep soul cuts and only two on a full Columbia label release. Originals are extremely expensive.

'Is That Enough' & 'Country Girl' were both originally recorded in the 1970s and had never been available in any format until Cordial Recordings struck a deal with Ruby to release them on vinyl for the first time. 'Is That Enough' is a glorious stepper that was originally recorded during the same sessions as 'Breezy,' which was Ruby & The Mudflaps only previous release in 1977. Whilst on the flip 'Country Girl' is a crossover gem that's filled dancefloors for selected DJs on promo.

Australian born and current New Zealand resident Micah Templeton-Wolfe is the sole force behind Stray Theories, and this album finds him following-up 2014s We Never Left EP with his first new long-form Stray Theories material, not to mention, his first album to be pressed to vinyl.
Templeton-Wolfe's time away has not been for naught. Composing for films, collaborations with like-minded artists and a plethora of remix projects, all while creating a sample pack for the Noiiz sample app under new project Ocean Lost. So it's been a busy time for Templeton-Wolfe.
While he has seemingly been focusing his efforts else- where, Templeton-Wolfe has been quietly composing for All That Was Lost, an album which is imbued in spades with Stray Theories' signature mood-altering sound- scapes.
Muted electronics have always played a part in the Stray Theories pallet, and some of Templeton-Wolfe's extracurricular work might have something to do with those textures now being brought a bit more to the fore. In Templeton-Wolfe's hand, these fit in perfectly within the personally subjective nature his music has always suggested. All That Was Lost is a cinematic ambient gem brought into the world at a time when we need it most.
