The label is built on a sonic and experimental mission a space for exploring emotions and textures beyond genres. Each artist creates their own small world within this vision.

The idea for the first record was born after discovering the Urgent collective, where I first saw Andree Bohlin perform. His unreleased track left a deep impression on me raw, hypnotic, and emotional.
Later, we connected and created the first episode for the label a release that perfectly represents its sound and spirit.

This marks the beginning of a new chapter where each release becomes part of a continuous journey through sound, emotion, and underground culture.

Tokyo based French producer Laurent introduces his label State of Levitation, dedicated to releasing music that tries to grasp the elusive.

Taking charge of the first release, he delivers 4 tracks unraveling sonic landscapes he resonates with, a blend of styles between techno and electro, dark and bright, with an emphasis on melody and emotional evocations.

In the wake of their widely-acclaimed album Union, JUNO-nominated duo ÈBONY rematerialize on the dancefloor with the otherworldly Shades of Meridian EP, projecting a waking futurist dream haunted by echoes of Detroit techno, Chicago house, South African melodies, and the rich mythology of Ancient Toronto.

Opener "Break My Skin explores a hidden pocket of after-hours techno space-time with an ethereal vocal by James Baley, leading into the tense, disembodied jack of "Forever." Next, "Dull Side First" rides a spectral break through a sepulchral warehouse trip, "RIFT" invokes peak-time witchcraft, and closer "My Daylight" entrances even the most self-possessed sound-and-lighting guys to spam the smoke machine until reality itself is occluded.

And to those who say that working with JUNO-nominated artists proves that Turbo is just a cog in the CanCon cabal, we would like to familiarize you with the facts: Canadian Tire refused to carry our 2023 Bryan Adams remix LP and we have rejected five separate demos from Justin Trudeau's tech-house alias "Arabian Nights." Natasha Pirard returns with her most personal project yet, dedicated to her mother and late grandmother, whose care shaped her life. Fernande, Cecile is a photobook of songs, weaving voice, field recordings, synthesizer, and violin into an ode to her matrilineal line. Pirard lost her grandmother at seven, yet Fernande’s warmth stayed with her as a touchstone. Her mother, Cecile, has been a constant presence, guiding her through difficult years.

Alzheimer’s—her grandmother’s illness—and the fragility of memory permeate the work. A conversation with her mother sparked the album: over coffee, Cecile placed a hand on her heart and said, “If I ever develop this disease, don’t forget I’m still here (inside).” That moment became central to the compositions, which translate Pirard’s gratitude and love into music as tender as possible.

The music moves in fragments—notes, chords, loops—evoking gardens, sunlight, and childhood afternoons. Rhythms shift like life itself, carrying echoes of loss and the persistence of memory. Ambient textures brush against her voice and instruments, sometimes punctuated by her grandmother’s favorite bird.

The album unfolds in two parts: Fernande, capturing her grandmother’s warmth and fading recollections, and Cecile, honoring her mother’s care and resilience. Track titles trace memories while the music drifts through longing and gratitude, articulating what words cannot.

The album was written and recorded by Natasha Pirard, produced and mixed by David & Stephen Dewaele of Soulwax/2manydjs at DEEWEE.

When Leng Records founders Paul ‘Mudd’ Murphy and Simon Purnell marked the imprint’s 10th birthday, they did so via a celebratory compilation that mixed classic catalogue cuts, remixes and exclusives. Five years on, and with the label’s 15th birthday upon us, they’ve decided to look to the future via a compilation made up entirely of fresh productions from Leng’s roster of current and new artists. Presented on limited-edition gatefold double vinyl with a bonus 10” single, the collection offers an updated showcase of Leng’s much-loved trademark sound, a distinctive fusion of mid-tempo sleazy-disco, Balearica and chugging house interspersed with elements of electronic psychedelia and synth-powered space disco. Fittingly for a compilation that wholeheartedly looks to the future, you’ll find first contributions from a handful of label newcomers.

Fast-rising duo Flying Mojito Bros give their spin on ‘Smoke Signals’ by label debutants Joe HarveyWhyte and Bobby Lee, turning in a heady and inspired revision that sits somewhere between dusk-ready cosmic disco and flash-fried desert blues. There’s also an appearance from Swedish producer Bo Wosticz with the dreamy and ultra-deep nu-jazz of ‘Bs As’. Naturally, you’ll also find plenty of heat from those who have already proved their mettle through prior releases on Leng. Danish duo Liminal, who made their debut earlier this year with the much-played ‘Keep Coming Back To Me’, open proceedings with the tactile, slow-disco flex of ‘Tzatziki Bay’ where sweet synth melodies and a heady electric piano riff ride a warming groove.

Roberto Intrallazzi and Dario Piana from Italy’s original Afro-cosmic movement return with ‘Plutos’, a typically deep dubbed-out cosmic chugger. Then there’s Rose Robinson AKA Tigerbalm, whose ‘Mexicana’ featuring singer Joi N’Juno is presented across the package in two different forms. Pete Herbert, who contributed to some of the earliest Leng releases, drops a driving dub disco take on the main compilation, while Robinson’s original mix – a more organic, percussive and horn-heavy affair blessed with plenty of hallucinatory intent – opens the bonus 10”.

There’s a welcome return to Leng for the brilliant Payfone, whose ‘Dime Algo’ is a typically classy, analogue-rich affair in which attractive Rhodes riffs, atmospheric female vocals and pitched-down house pianos rise above shuffling drum machine beats and a slow-motion bassline. Long-serving label contributor Lex (Athens) delivers the loose-limbed nu-disco breeze of ‘Stolen Dance’, while the imprint’s San Francisco connection – the ever-brilliant 40 Thieves collective – drop the dubbed-out Bay Area brilliance of ‘Such A Great Trip’.

Then there are the contributions of the label’s most storied artist, Andrew Meecham AKA Emperor Machine with ‘Eumig’, a deliciously slow, synth-rich chugger full of colourful chords, bubbly electronic melodies and jaunty electronic bass. Then, to round off the bonus 10” single, Meecham joins forces with Paul Murphy (as Mudd) on ‘Road To Nikko’, an extended, Japanese musical culture-influenced slab of pitched-down alien-funk packed to the rafters with squelchy synth sounds, effects-laden percussion, chiming melodies and rubbery bass guitar.

Moody and Zeitgeist have had the utmost privilege to bring onboard a team of some of the most accomplished musicians/wordsmiths India has to offer for this album. Working out of Island City Studios in Khar West, Mumbai, the duo assembled a team of musicians including acclaimed and awarded vocalists Vinay Sugatha Ramadasan and Anuja Zokarkar. The pair bring a lyrical depth to the music informed by millennia of North-Indian classical poetry and melody. Metaphor and imagery is intermingled with EX GENERATION's unapologetic rhythm and production style to form something that is profound and complex, whilst also accessible and innate in the way it confronts the listener.

Having previously released selected retrospectives focused on the musical output of Ryo Kawasaki and Joan Bibiloni, NuNorthern Soul has now turned its attention to the vast back catalogue of Jasper Van’t Hof’s pioneering electro-acoustic, Afro-fusion collective, Pili Pili.

The band was established in 1984 by Van’t Hof, a Dutch pianist who began his career in Europe’s jazz scene of the late 1960s, as a way of combining his love of jazz-fusion and the music of North-West Africa. Van’t Hof already had a reputation for combining roles in traditional jazz combos with more experimental and abstract projects. These included a spell in violinist Jean-Luc Ponty’s first band, years spent masterminding jazz-rock outfit Jasper Van’t Hof’s Porkpie, the recording of an all- electronic album (1982’s Visitors), and a celebrated collaborative live album with the great Archie Shepp, Mama Rose.

Pili Pili, though, was another step forward for Van’t Hof. Working with percussionists and vocalists from Benin and Mali (including the now legendary Angelique Kidou) and a string of adventurous jazz soloists (saxophonist Tony Lakoto and trumpeter Annie Whitehead included), Van’t Hof’s collective frequently combined live and programmed percussion, electronic and acoustic instrumentation, and the talented improvisor’s own memorable melodies and impactful solos.

NuNorthern Soul’s retrospective focuses on the most productive and celebrated period of Pili Pili’s near three-decade history, showcasing tracks originally recorded and released on studio albums released between 1984 and 2002. The six tracks on show offer an essential glimpse into the musical gold to be found across the Pili Pili catalogue.

In keeping with NuNorthern Soul’s previous retrospectives, the vinyl version of Selected Works 1984-95 comes with extended liner notes telling the remarkable story of this most unusual of cross-cultural collaborations. These feature extensive quotes, reflections and memories from Jasper Van’t Hof and were written by music historian Matt Anniss.

A surefire Salsoul classic and comfortably one of the label's finest moments, the self-titled LP from The Strangers was originally released in that golden year of 1983 and is one of the greatest albums of the post-disco era. It’s one of Be With's favourite ever LPs and it's a complete honour to be giving it our reissue treatment.

Still strangely overlooked but not for much longer, The Strangers contains flawless tracks with truly top tier production and includes the eternal Paradise Garage favourite "Step Into My Dream."

Are they Strangers to us? Well, no, they shouldn't be. The Strangers were a US electronic-funk studio concept group comprising Edward "Tree" Moore, Howard King and Hubert Eaves III, all key members of Mtume and Gary Bartz NTU Troop and, in the case of Eaves, one half of D-Train.

Now I KNOW you're gonna dig this!

We kick off with the dope electro-funk of "Wanna Take Your Body" which features Gary Bartz on sax (!) and becomes more sensational and irresistible the longer it plays. The wonky super-bomb "Let Me Take You Home" has a punk-funk, post-Prince feel, driving and delicate all at the same time while "Show Me How You Like It" is pure FUNK, the groove just pure fire.

Side B is perfection. It kicks off with the NTS favourite "Love Rescue", a track so slick it positively SLAPS out the gate and, while it bangs throughout, the vocals and melodies elevate this to the status of EMOTIONAL POP.

Next up, "Step Out Of My Dream" swaggers forth, the undisputed masterpiece that was huge with the London DJs and UK Soul fraternity; it's not hard to see why. It's a gliding, smooth, soulful piece of once-in-a-lifetime magic.

Y-3003 marks the critical third instalment of the recently founded Y-3000 imprint. Solitary Dancer return as the sonic architects of the runway score for adidas & Yohji Yamamoto's pioneering Y-3 label, arguably their most ambitious collaboration to date. The SS26 Y-3 Presentation at the Palais Brongniart in Paris saw the duo work alongside movement director, choreographer & dramaturg Kiani Del Valle and the KDV Performance Group to present -- ''I'll Meet You At The Horizon'' -- a genre-blurring performance that shattered preconceptions around the traditional fashion runway, again capturing Y-3's vision for the future, and renewing the brand's commitment to transcendent expressivity.

“Everything flows – nothing remains, there is only an eternal becoming and changing” is a well-known formulation of the river theory of the Greek philosopher Heraclitus, also known as panta rhei (ancient Greek: πάντα ῥεῖ, “everything flows”). This teaching states that everything in the universe is subject to constant change and that nothing stays the same forever. The metaphor of the river illustrates this: You can't step into the same river twice because both the river and you are constantly changing. The water is constantly flowing, but the river stays in one place. Thus, reality is constantly changing, even if sometimes perceived as constant.”

For the 26th time, the most consistent of all ambient compilations, in a constant flux of static change, is released on Kompakt. Joining good friends from the early days and reliable confidants are some new additions to the non-hierarchical charts of contemplative rapture culture.

Leading the way is Micå, a Japanese electronic musician whose finely chiseled, graceful musical style has made it onto the new collection with two pieces. Also making his debut is Richard Ojijo, a seasoned sound engineer known, among other things, for his long-standing collaboration with the artist Marcel Odenbach and the Cologne-based label Magazine. Oskø aka Max Hytrek, a multi-talented newcomer to Kompakt and the music scene, debuts with his rapturously ecstatic piece "Ar Vag." He's followed by Sebastian Mullaert, appearing for the second time—this time teamed up with Sebastian Lilja aka Hush Forever. After his surprise return last year after a 20 year hiatus, we are delighted that Tetsuo Sakae aka Pass Into Silence is back again this year with one of his distinctive sound gems. As are Dirk Leyers (Closer Musik) and Mikkel Metal. 18 tracks are featured on this CD. "Erlösung" (Redemption) is the title of Segensklang's closing track. A kind of ambient bolero into infinity. Or at least until next year...

And what would Pop Ambient be without the iconic, artistic cover design of Veronika Unland, who once again, in her unmistakable way, says through the digital flower: The eye always listens...

One of the founding figures of Amsterdam's underground Techno culture Dimi Angelis has been shaping the scene in the late 90s, throwing warehouse raves living up to the underground standards. Until today his approach remains unchanged: uncompromising, opinionated, and never aimed at easy pleasing.
Drawing from decades of crate-digging and an encyclopedic knowledge of Techno's evolution, Dimi crafts sets that feel familiar a reveal unexpected depths on closer listening.
These tracks follow that same philosophy as they are straightforward and honest on the surface, but wrapped in something appropriately unexpected.

Ever developing his evocative style and dynamic sphere of influence, ASC's latest EP is afurther evolution of the atmospheric legend's repertoire that simply cannot be missed.

A1 - Everybody

ASC opens his latest Spatial EP in subtle fashion, classic genre effects punctuating anunsettling intro before deliciously crisp drums seize the stage and build continually with hi-hats generating an urgency to the vibe. A series of micro melodies delivered withtrademark technical flair float across stunning breaks, before a rousing baseline caps off asuperbly evocative mix which delights the listener and dancer in equal measure.

A2 - Seconds To Midnight

Straight in with a purposeful 808 bassline, ASC delivers another powerhouse display ofbreakbeat fluency, jumping between chunky, juddery drum patterns with a choppedversion of a lesser-used but very effective break sample last heard on ASC's very ownclassic, Polaris. Epic vocal effects surround Seconds To Midnight with a tense aura whilesuitably pitched strings and synth work are dusted liberally throughout the piece.

AA1 - Restless Dreams

Amen fans unite! ASC's love for the most classic of breaks shines through once againwith an enthralling workout for the ages. Introduced with eerie pad work and a solobassline, the atmosphere is crafted through a plethora of pads and samples while theamens thunder on with a detailed array of editing skills on show - thumping kicks andsnares keep the energy levels high bar after bar leaving nothing in their wake.

AA2 - Core Memories

A gorgeous female vocal opens Core Memories, a track which uses the classic breakfeatured on the first ever Spatial release, Force Majeure. Here, a refreshing set oftechniques are on show from ASC as he carves and chops the break to the tune ofcautious horns, highlighting the serene yet uncertain backdrop to a wonderfully varied anddetailed collage to close this distinctive and progressive EP from the label head.

A transcontinental meeting of minds, methods, and Volvos. What started as a remix request became a studio session and, eventually, a four-track affair of acid-tinged house, Italo accents, trance echoes, and techno pulse.

In Love Again captures the shared DNA of Loods and Gerd Janson, bright, melodic, and built for the beach club (Massimo Vitali's cover makes it official). Four flavours of the same spirit, each mix a nod to a time when 12-inches told a whole story.

Berlin-based duo Brigade returns with their sophomore effort, having spent the intervening years refining their approach to sample-based composition. Where 2022's "Hard Times, Soft Music" established their credentials as purveyors of comfort food electronics, „Unlimited Dreams Corporation“ finds the pair digging deeper into the archives, constructing elaborate sonic collages from decades of discarded vinyl.The fictional corporate framework, a company peddling bespoke dream experiences, works as an aesthetic guide, appropriate for 2025.

The fourteen tracks unfold with the patience of bedroom producers who understand that the best plunderphonic work happens in the margins. Brigade layers found sounds and field recordings with careful restraint, creating pockets of warmth that invite repeated listening. The broken beat rhythms feel lived-in rather than showy, while the more ambient moments provide necessary breathing room. It's headphone music that rewards attention without demanding it, the kind of record that reveals new details months after initial discovery.

the label say 'Djoko is no stranger to Voyage Direct. Having first appeared on the label way back in 2012, he's returned numerous times since, becoming an integral member of the imprint's growing family of artists. Elsewhere, he's delivered material on Tuskegee, Mobilee and Leftroom, amongst others, developing an approach that takes inspiration from numerous styles of house and techno. However, little he's previously released can match the raw, eyebrow-raising lust and sexually charged funk of Dirty Talk'.

Driven forward by Djoko's sleazy, whispered spoken word vocal, the original version combines the rubbery, bass-heavy rhythms of classic, Dance Mania-style ghetto house, the delay-laden guitar flashes of vintage NYC proto-house, and the kind of darting, funk-fuelled keys - provided by fellow Dutch producer Kid Sublime - that recall the glory days of '80s electrofunk. Djoko provides an alternate version in the shape of the thrusting, stripped-back Club Dub', with his breathy Accapella' rounding off the A-side.

On the flip, two Voyage Direct stalwarts take it in turns to rework the track. First up is label boss Tom Trago, who builds on Djoko's elastic percussion with some dense new drum hits of his own. These are combined with spacey synths and sharp string stabs, giving Dirty Talk' a more classic techno/house fusion flavour. In contrast, Werner uses the opportunity to turn in a triple-X-rated interpretation full of bounding, Chicago-influenced beats, intergalactic pads, sleazy acid lines, and sweaty, surging drum fills. It's a fittingly breathless remix.'

Now a regular on the label, scene stalwart Chronicle continues his joyful journeythrough a landscape of dancefloor-friendly atmospherics.

A1 - Air Temple

Chronicle opens the EP with Air Temple, an immensely playful track with a superb 2-step hot pants break, programmed superbly with layers of depth generating anenergetic and immensely danceable tone, following the deliciously smooth late 90'sGLO-style intro. Lush female vocal samples perfect for the vibe are present and correctwhile micro melodies pan across the mix adding a wonderful texture.

A2 - Everblue

A delicately ominous intro with pads, whooshing samples and rustic synths precede adensely crafted slew of old-school analogue breakbeats laid in a subtle arrangement,bringing a blend of energy perfect for dancefloors and home listeners alike. Vocalsamples are programmed and twisted like instruments as Chronicle embarks on aspace odyssey with memorable melodies you'll keep discovering listen after listen.

AA1 - Encarta

Next up we have Encarta, which sets out intentions quickly in the introduction with abouncy, clean breakbeat which is quickly bolstered by a superb 2-step old school drumloop to create a pulsating energy. A myriad of samples are collected and fleckedthroughout the mix, while Chronicle's editing techniques mimic a skilled DJ cuttinganother break in and out to satisfying effect towards the back end of the main phases.

AA2 - Angular Momentum

Closing a diverse and uniquely atmospheric EP, Chronicle opens Angular Momentumwith a patchwork of synths and pads, ushering in a serene, simple high note melodyabove the driving breaks - detailed with distinctive cymbals that give the track's nameserious validity. With a slew of samples darting in both the foreground and backgroundfor the listener to enjoy, this is a piece which will live long in the memory.

Experienced Dutch producer Tom Ruijg rightly won praise for his first 12' as Tracey, Skyfall, which surfaced on Voyage Direct in early 2017. Combining elements seemingly inspired by vintage Detroit futurism, '90s ambient techno and his own love of colourful synthesizer melodies, the EP saw Tracey set out his stall in impressive fashion.

Compare and contrast, for example, the two A-side cuts. While Testarossa' is far-sighted and spacey, with Tracey wrapping intergalactic electronics and lilting synthesizer melodies around a darting synthesizer bassline and swinging, electro-influenced house drums, Sidekick' is blissful and almost overwhelmingly melodious: all 16-bit new age motifs, head-in-the-clouds electronics and driving, locked-in machine drums.

The contrasts continue on the B-side, too. Many DJs may instinctively be drawn towards Made My Love', whose energy-packed groove (think vintage Chicago jack with a dollop of slick NYC house soul) is peppered with spacey chords, undulating electronic motifs and glacial melodies. Yet the track that follows, the wild and windy electro workout that is Interceptor', is every bit as potent when played over club sound systems. The track's inherent hustle, seemingly the product of Ruijg's darting synth stabs and feverish audio textures, is almost impossible to resist.

2025 Repress

The mighty Falsetto voice of Mr Cornell Campbell is another we believe, unsung hero of the Jamaican music scene. Who in our opinion should have broke through to a wider audience, than his cult status currently provides. We have unearthed straight from the master tapes an album that was due for release around the mid 70’s. A few of these cuts, found their way out on limited 7”s, that were mainly for the domestic Jamaican market. But as a complete body of work, never found a release until now. We hope like us, once you have played the tracks, you will feel that this set of cuts, stands up amongst Cornell’s finest work. Cornell Campbell (born 1948, Jamaica), made his first recordings in the early 1960’s for Coxone Dodd at Studio 1. Tracks like ‘Under the Old Oak Tree’, ‘My Treasure’ and later as a duo with Roy Patton ‘Salvation’ and ‘Sweetest Girl’, were local hits on the Jamaican Sound Systems. A short spell with the Uniques was followed by his roll as lead vocalist with the Eternals, under the monicker of Don Cornell. Their finest moment being the classic ‘Stars / Queen of the Minstrels’ cuts which still stand up today as some of Jamaica’s finest.

The 1970’s saw Mr Campbell move on to work with producer Bunny ‘Striker’ Lee, for whom he cut most

of his big tunes. He and fellow singer Johnny Clarke, would become Bunny’s 70’s equivalent to his 1960’s stable of singers like Slim Smith, Pat Kelly and Ernest Wilson. They would provide the voice to his many hits of the day. Bunny not being called ‘Striker’ for nothing. Cornell also had a series of hits around his theme as the ‘Gorgon’. The mighty figure unbeatable at the dances in the Greenwich Town district of Kingston. ‘The Gorgon’, ‘The Conquering Gorgon’. ‘Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm’. These were all firm favourites at the dances in Jamaica. He also worked with other notable producers around this time. Winston ‘Niney’ Holness “I Heart is Clean’, Tappa Zukie ‘Follow Instruction’

and culminating in a massive hit ‘Boxing’ in 1979 for producer Joe Gibbs. But it was his time with Bunny Lee that set the levels for his record output. This unreleased album is from this period in time, when Cornell Campbell never sounded sweeter......

Geckos is the collective spirit of acclaimed songwriter M. Ward, Giant Sand visionary Howe Gelb, and Irish multi-instrumentalist McKowski. Born out of an impromptu recording session that was sparked by an encounter at the wedding of a mutual friend, the project blends the rich flavors of the Southwest with indie folk, Spanish influences, and a touch of Irish mysticism. While initial recordings took place in Tucson, it became a true transatlantic project when the members returned to their hometowns and continued trading ideas. The trio eventually regrouped in studios across Ireland, London, and Bristol, where renowned English producer John Parish mixed multiple tracks. Geckos' self-titled debut is steeped in story, spontaneity, and surreal charm, channeling the spirit of three singular voices discovering a new, shared musical language.

393AD returns to his own Full Range Motion records with 'Singularities EP'! On this EP, 393AD continues to explore the grey-area in between introspective yet driving techno, an area in which 393AD's well-received debut 'Doctrine EP' left such an impression. The Amsterdam-based artist playful use of sound-design and storytelling adaptations of live hardware jams are once more an excellent foundation for his second release, solidifying the distinctive sound of the artist on this young label. Opener 'Gravitational' pulsating beats are a strong anchor for slowly unfolding harmonic stabs and a strong centrifugal energy. Glimmering patterns unfold as an umbrella; a projectile shoots past; the aftermath of a near-collision - there's no running from this mind-gazing adventure. On the same side 'Technological' pushes on with dramatic effect as noise interlocks with serenity. A devious and mesmerizing track. The flip starts off with 'Mechanical', the final clever contribution to this EP by 393AD. Propulsive kicks and startling low-end call & responses manifest infectious hooks and rhythmic interplay. This track is as serious as it is facetious. Finalising this EP is Maasym's remix of 'Gravitational'. Building on the urgent dynamics of the original, Maasym conjures a magical field of rhythm, intertwining the original with his own energetic pulses. Culminating finally in a compelling resurgence of the original's main stab.

Den Künstlernamen ,JJJJJerome" zu buchstabieren, rührt von der Erkenntnis her, dass das am häufigsten gestotterte Wort der eigene Name ist. Trotz einer kurzen Sprachtherapie als Kind - als er in der siebten Klasse zum Saxophon griff, machte es plötzlich Klick. ,Ich stottere immer noch beim Saxophonspielen, aber es ist anders." Als Künstler dreht sich sein kreatives Ethos nun um die Erforschung des Stotterns durch Musik, wobei er die Fähigkeit jedes Einzelnen, Zeit zu gestalten, näher erläutert. Er ehrt das Stottern durch Kunst. Er begann damit, zu CDs von John Coltrane und Billie Holiday auf dem Horn zu improvisieren. Aber als jemand, der sich gerne mit Grenzen auseinandersetzt, hat sich JJJJJerome seitdem zu einem versierten Multi-Instrumentalisten entwickelt, wobei jedes Instrument einen Wendepunkt darstellt, der neue Wege zu potenziellen Klangwelten ebnet. Seine Stimme wird zusätzlich von einer Ehrfurcht vor der Erde und den Vorfahren - sowohl menschlichen als auch anderen - geleitet. Aufgrund der familiären Verbindungen seiner Mutter zur Kirche und den unvergesslichen Geschichten seiner Großmutter, die als Pianistin und Organistin auftrat, hat JJJJJeromes jüngste Affinität zu Tasteninstrumenten eine bedeutende Gewichtung. Das kommende zweite Album ,Vesper Sparrow" (Shelter Press) ist aus dieser Verbindung zur schwarzen religiösen Tradition und zum Erbe entstanden. Es ist eine Fortsetzung der fortlaufenden Auseinandersetzung des Künstlers mit den Schnittstellen zwischen Musik und Klang, Stottern und Schwarzsein aus der Perspektive der Zeit. Das Album besteht aus zwei vollständigen Gedanken und dreht sich um ein aufgezeichnetes Stottern. JJJJJerome teilt die vierteilige Komposition ,Evensong" auf, indem er das Stottern in Teil zwei ausblendet und die Tracks drei und vier (,Vesper Sparrow" und ,Black-Throated Sparrow") dazwischen einfügt. ,Das Stottern wird zu einem strukturierenden Moment", erklärt er in Bezug auf die Möglichkeit, die entstandene Zeit zu füllen. Die Aussetzung wird somit zu einem integralen Bestandteil der musikalischen Sprache von JJJJJerome. Sowohl Stottern als auch Granularsynthese können Momente in der Zeit aussetzen und ,zu vielfältigen Arten des Verweilens, Durchquerens und Verbindens mit anderen in diesen Momenten einladen". Der Künstler greift auch auf Elemente der Pop-Produktion zurück - elektronische Texturen und Verzerrungen, die teilweise vom Indie-Rock inspiriert sind, sowie Spoken Word, Sampling und Audiomanipulationen, die aus der karibischen und afroamerikanischen Musik stammen.

Various Small Whistles and a Song, the new album by Chicago-based artist Lia Kohl, incorporates notions of space, social relations, and humor. As the title suggests, the album responds to Ed Ruscha’s 1964 photographic artist book Various Small Fires and Milk, which Kohl sees as a wondrous celebration of ordinariness, one that reveals Ruscha’s trademark deadpan humor and depth. In the spirit of that publication, Kohl created her own series of sonic vignettes, with guest appearances from her close community of collaborators including claire rousay, Macie Stewart, Patrick Shiroishi, and others, reflecting the same sense of humor and mundanity.

The structure of the album—16 one-minute tracks—directly mirrors Ruscha’s book, which comprises 15 photographs of fire and one of a glass of milk. Ruscha’s “small fires” are represented here by recordings of whistles—mostly human whistling, with occasional appearances by train whistles, emergency whistles, and a woman selling penny whistles on the street in Guangzhou, China. About this choice of material, Kohl writes: “I’ve always been captivated by whistling—it’s musical but often a bit unconscious; usually solo but often done in public places. There’s something tender and human about hearing someone whistle, a socially acceptable version of hearing their mind wander.” As with Ruscha’s photographs, the whistles are not random snapshots but windows into social situations, narratives, or spaces.

The “milk” of the title — the 16th photograph in Ruscha’s book — is interpreted here as a single recording: a group of people singing together in Barcelona around 6 a.m. on New Year’s morning, captured through the floor of an Airbnb. Kohl describes this as a social, collective sound that contrasts with the solitary nature of whistling. The song functions as a counterbalance—a quiet celebration of shared experience.

Lia Kohl is a composer and sound artist based in Chicago. Her wide-ranging practice includes composition and performance, installation, improvisation, and collaboration. She tours nationally and internationally, working in theater, jazz, rock, and experimental contexts. Her work centers curiosity and patience, an exploration of the mundane and profound possibilities of sound.
