Hip Hop Collected will take you on a musical journey through the history of hip hop. This 2LP covers the first 20 years of the genre, showcasing 25 early pioneers who participated in the rise of hip hop. This compilation features music from the new labels that started to rise from the underground scene, like Sugar Hill Records, Profile and of course Def Jam. Including artists that defined a genre, a lifestyle and most of all, artists that inspired millions of young kids with both socially critical lyrics as well as classic party anthems.

This hip hop compilation album is part of the new Collected compilation series, which is a collaboration between Universal Music and Music On Vinyl. The compilations bring together the biggest and best names of its genre, combined with forgotten hits and less discovered gems, giving the listener an experience of both nostalgia and uncovering new musical grounds at the same time.

The 2LP features Kurtis Blow “The Breaks”, Grand Master Flash & The Furious Five “The Message”, Beastie Boys “She’s On It”, Rob Base & DJ E-Z Rock “Get On The Dancefloor”, and Eric B. & Rakim “Paid In Full” amongst many others.

The sun has finally come out. It’s the first time something like this has happened for months and months; the first glow of an approaching summer, whatever date the calendar is currently saying it is. The whole thing acts as a curative meditation, miraculously wiping away all the greyness of the past few months. Right now, optimism abounds, outlooks change and your daily soundtrack has shifted from spiky and uptight into a kind of cosmic space where songs ebb and flow and drift on like rivers run on forever towards the glimmering sea. Bliss, right?

If you’re reading this, we’re assuming that you’re the kind of person who views summer as a state of mind rather than a good looking day on the BBC Weather app. With that in mind, we reckon you already know all about Heavenly Recordings’ series of untouchable, utterly essential Balearic Breakfast compilations, each one lovingly compiled by visionary DJ, producer and broadcaster Colleen ‘Cosmo’ Murphy - the genius club legend whose radio show of the same name (broadcast 10am to high noon every Tuesday via Mixcloud) began as an escape route from the pandemic before rapidly building a global community of dedicated Balearican listeners.

Each Balearic Breakfast album has provided a spiritual getaway from the greyness of the everyday through a handpicked selection of glorious, psychedelically coloured, expansive music. It doesn’t matter where on the planet the music hails from, or when it was made, it just matters that it fits like a jigsaw piece into the musical whole. Be it off world jazz music or vocoder led robo-disco music; whether decades old or pressed to vinyl for the first time, everything on these flawless Balearic Breakfast collections just needs to flow together and bring the listener into the sunshine, whatever time of year they’re listening.

Due for release this August, the fourth Balearic Breakfast compilation sees Cosmo take this head trip further than ever before. From the opening track’s swoop and glide that nods to Vangelis’ Blade Runner soundtrack before gliding into it’s own expansive voyage to the stars (Kandeen Love Song) to Cosmo’s own glorious Parisienne stroll through Saint Etienne’s recent Alone Together to Ilya Santana’s Spanish space disco anthem Cosmovision - a track that rolls through like a turbo powered Supernature - and the phenomenal 2015 disco version of Gloria Ann Taylor’s early ’70s classic Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing, this Balearic Breakfast offers the perfect soundtrack to the summer, whether it’s actually happening outside or just taking place in your head. The album C.Q. was originally released in 1968 by the Dutch Nederbeat band The Outsiders, featuring Wally Tax (vocals), Ronnie Splinter (guitar), Leendert "Buzz" Busch (drums), and Frank Beek (bass guitar)._x000d__x000a_The Outsiders, hailing from Amsterdam, were a key figure in the Dutch Nederbeat movement—a local interpretation of beat music inspired by the British Invasion. Though the album C.Q. initially struggled commercially, it has since gained recognition as a psychedelic and garage rock masterpiece._x000d__x000a_C.Q. is available as a limited edition on yellow coloured vinyl and packed in a gloss laminated gatefold sleeve.

Among the most important groups in hip-hop history, legendary Brownsville, Brooklyn duo M.O.P. has been the embodiment of hardcore rap for three decades.They’ve been signed to iconic labels like Roc-A-Fella and G-Unit, released one of the biggest rap singles ever in “Ante Up”, and did it all without compromising their sound or integrity. Back in 2014, Lil Fame and Billy Danze unleashed the acclaimed album Street Certified, executive produced by DJ Premier. Featuring appearances by Mobb Deep, Busta Rhymes, and Maino, the project is classic New York hip-hop, with the type of raw, unfiltered music fans have come to expect from the Mash Out Posse. After an initial white coloured pressing quickly sold out, Street Certified is now available on black vinyl for the first time ever, complete with redesigned artwork.

This is where it all starts. Without any reminiscing about their former band Operation Ivy, Matt Freeman (bass) and Tim Armstrong (guitar/vocals) blast through their debut without any hints of ska or blatant Clash plagiarizing. On the contrary, this album rips through 15 tracks of high-energy punk that"s accompanied by heavy bass leads and Armstrong"s permanently slurred vocals. And to top it all off, the lyrical content deals with urban blight and the lifestyle of being a public nuisance. Blue Channel is a brand-new dub-roots collaboration between Bluetrain aka Steve O Sullivan, and Another Channel - two titans in the dub techno scene. They are accompanied by Prince Morella, who adds his smooth vocals on top of the scapes of chords and delays. If you are into legendary labels like Maurizio, Burial Mix, and Rhythm & Sound, then this one is for you. Limited coloured vinyl.

SND & RTN presents two exceptional dub-infused tracks, featuring deep, atmospheric remixes by the legendary Detroit artist Stephen Hitchell, under two of his many monikers. cv313 began as a collaborative project between Stephen and Rod Modell, much like Echospace. Intrusion, however, emerged as Hitchell’s solo venture into the depths of dubtechno. Limited coloured vinyl.

The second part of the Blue Channel Session completes the bundle. Steve O Sullivan crafted an additional, stripped-down version of “Complete With U” under his Bluetrain alias, as featured in the original release on the first vinyl. Limited coloured vinyl.

Interspecies is a label that does house and disco music a little differently, with influences from ambient and jazz adding plenty of cosmic edge. This latest drop is another odyssey to the stars from three different artists. Starblazerss' 'Race Babblin' brings Roy Ayres style vibes and dubs of melody to loose double bass and splashes of soulful colour. DJ Norizm's 'Wikendi' then plods along on a nice and weighty dub with meandering synth leads and curious and whimsical melodies taking your mind away. Hapa's 'Coming Down' then serves up a cosmic house trip with synths taking off like spacecraft, chugging beats and live jazz drums. Classy tackle.

Bob and Marcia were a Jamaican vocal duo, that consisted of Bob Andy and Marcia Griffiths.

Griffiths & Andy achieved international fame with their rendition of Nina Simone’s “Young, Gifted and Black.” The song resonated deeply with audiences in the UK, selling over half a million copies and earning Bob & Marcia a place on Top of the Pops.

It reached the number #5 spot in the UK charts.

Released in 1997, Uptown Saturday Night is the acclaimed debut album by Bronx hip-hop duo Camp Lo. Known for its smooth blend of jazz- influenced production and 1970s-inspired flair, the album stands as a standout in East Coast hip- hop. Produced primarily by Ski Beatz, the album features lush, nostalgic beats that complement Camp Lo’s unique slang, stylish delivery, and cinematic storytelling.

The lead single, “Luchini AKA This Is It”, became a cult classic, praised for its infectious groove
and sophisticated wordplay. Other highlights like “Coolie High” and “Black Nostaljack AKA Come On” showcase the duo’s charismatic chemistry and retro vibe.

Shelter is best known for its founder and frontman, Ray Cappo, who is considered as one of the most prominent representatives of the ‘krishnacore’ scene, which mixes the elements of hardcore
with a strong spiritual message. Formed in the early 90’s, Shelter was Cappo’s second band - previously he was the frontman of Youth of Today.

Originally released in 1997, their second album Beyond Planet Earth finds Shelter moving more in a “Pop-core” direction, with songs averaging 2-3 minutes. Some pretty catchy stuff can be found on this album.

If you appreciate hardcore’s energy, but feel that the music and lyrics are too one-dimensional for your taste, chances are you’ll find those missing elements in Shelter’s music.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry & The Upsetters’ classic Return of Django. Lee Perry had already been making name in the Jamaican music scene for about a decade before Return of Django hit the UK charts in 1969. It was released after Trojan released
a hugely popular collection of Perry’s biggest instrumentals. This album is a must for everyone that enjoys that good old vintage reggae sounds.

Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry was a pioneer of dub music and worked together with artists such as Bob Marley and the Wailers, The Clash and The Beastie Boys.

American glam metal band Warrant released their second studio album Cherry Pie in 1990, which became their best-known and highest-selling release. It peaked at #7 on the Billboard 200 and featured two hit singles, “Cherry Pie” and “I Saw Red”. The title track contains a guitar solo performed by Poison’s guitarist C.C. DeVille. The album features more guest performers, including Dio’s Scott Warren, Bruno Ravel and Steve West from Danger Danger. Besides well-known guest performers, the album was produced by Beau Hill (Alice Cooper, Europe) and mastered by Grammy Award winner Ted Jensen, who also mastered the Eagles’ Hotel California and Norah Jones’ Come Away With Me.

Known for his ability to create captivating, emotionally charged techno, Jonathan Kaspar eventually returns to Cocoon Recordings with his third contribution Twofold Split. One, yet simultaneously two releases that once again showcase his extraordinary talent through condensed techno with a pinch of trance, weaving together driving rhythms and atmospheric textures in a way that feels innovatively progressive.

Rooted in a minimalist rhythmic structure, ‘Power’ takes us in a new direction, steadily building momentum as its energy billows upwards, with the intensity never wavering throughout. A large, dented, tinny tuba sounds imposingly as Jonathan blows louder and louder into the old thing, its raw, metallic tone instantly commanding attention. Pluto, although not necessarily one of those bands who spring immediately to mind as having been a seminal influence on the weaving of rock music’s tapestry, remain an excellent, if little-known and much underrated band.

The band’s only album Pluto (originally released on the Dawn label back in November 1971) has, during the latter half of the ‘90s, become a much sought-after item in the ever-expanding underground/progressive sector of the record collectors’ market. Conceived
initially by guitarist Paul Gardner and taking their name from the Disney cartoon character, they were formed in North London in 1970. The key members were Gardner and Alan Warner, two highly experienced campaigners from widely disparate musical backgrounds.

The album is a nice mix of hard rock, progressive rock and blues rock elements. The song writing is pretty solid and there are no fillers included. This lone Pluto LP is easy to recommend for those who like the early 70’s hard rock bands.

Originally released In July 1970 “Wil Malone”, a typically idiosyncratic supper-club/chamber pop take on the singer/songwriter genre that was so in vogue at the time. Featuring such earnest/facetious nuggets as 'I Could Write A Book' and 'At The Silver Slipper', the album has many admirers these days.
The original release is considered a rare collector's item, with some original copies fetching high prices. This reissue on Morgan Blue Town is available as a limited edition 180-gram yellow coloured vinyl pressing.

Few Jamaican music makers have demonstrated greater versatility or proficiency than Lloyd Charmers, who first made his name on the Jamaican music scene as a youthful singer- songwriter in the early 60s.

Croatian cellists Luka Šulić and HAUSER, together known as 2CELLOS, celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2021 with a brand new album, titled Dedicated. The album was led by the first single, a cover of Bon Jovi’s anthem “Livin’ On A Prayer”. Dedicated showcases their unique playing style on ten new arrangements that reinvent both recent hits such as One Republic's “Wherever I Go”, Ed Sheeran/Justin Bieber's “I Don’t Care” and Billie Eilish's “Bad Guy”, and iconic classics such as Guns ‘N Roses' “Sweet Child O’ Mine” and Aerosmith's “Cryin’”. In 2011, 2CELLOS went viral with their self-uploaded version of Michael Jackon’s “Smooth Criminal”. Keyboard virtuoso Terry Riley started experimenting with different instruments in the ‘50s. One of his electronic music landmarks
is his third album A Rainbow in Curved Air. Through the use of overdubbing, he recorded all the instruments to feature on the title track. The composition consists of three movements, each representing another part of his musical influences. As the song progresses, its structure goes through frequent changes. It’s a colorful,
psychedelic, atmospheric and revolutionary song. The second track consists of a loop of saxophones and is the dreamy and calm opposite of the title track. Fans of electronic music, such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, would love this record.
Taking inspiration from Hindustani classical music and jazz techniques, Riley’s masterpiece
influenced many musicians, from the likes of Brian Eno to Emeralds.

Playing with a Different Sex was the debut album by seminal post-punk band Au Pairs, released in 1981.

Described retrospectively by AllMusic as ‘one of the great post-punk records’, a review by Record Mirror on its release said the band’s ‘critique of all forms of possession and sexual stereotyping assumes a devastating power’. Themes include sexual politics and the torture of women imprisoned in Northern Ireland during The Troubles of the 1970s, as well as a stunning cover of David Bowie’s ‘Repetition’ about domestic violence. It peaked at No. 33 in the UK, and features the single ‘It's Obvious’, which reached No. 37 on the US Club Play Singles chart. 1975 marked the year the American progressive rock band Kansas released two absolute classic albums, Song for America and Masque. Their third album Masque is a forty minutes piece consisting of 8 songs. It’s a concept album based on a mythological theme and well performed by the different band members. Highlights are the fan favourite “Icarus” and the almost 10 minute counting stunning prog epic “The Pinnacle”. The album is an excellent addition to any prog music collection.

Kansas became popular during the 1970s with hits like “Carry On Wayward Son” and “Dust in the Wind”. Besides their well-known ballads they also recorded some impressive progressive pieces.
The diversity of their music and immense energy of the band is one of the reasons why they’re still performing and recording.

Based out of the Bay Area, Combo Tezeta plays a highly danceable blend of instrumental Cumbias, Chichas, and Musica Tropical inspired by the late 60's and early 70's era of psychedelic Peru. Layering the reverb-fueled sounds of surf rock onto the foundations of Cumbia, the band's focus is to highlight the rich melodies and hypnotic rhythms birthed from the Afro-Latin diaspora. Along with its appreciation of world music and its diverse cultures, Combo Tezeta's mission is to deliver the sounds and musical echoes of the past to the present through a combination of traditional and original music. Combo Tezeta was featured in Noise Pop 2023 and has played Pacific Northwest tours with Satan’s Pilgrim and Thomas Lauderdale of Pink Martini 2023. The band has played famed Bay Area Venues the Chapel, Eli’s Mile High Club and the Ivy Room.  In Summer of 2024 they toured the Pacific Northwest and Southern California, including an appearance at The Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. The band was chosen by NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts to be one of 20 finalists (out of 7000), and featured them in the Northern California showcase of finalists at Lagunitas Brewery in 2024. “Oakland seven-piece Combo Tezeta kicked off the baile with a garage-band take on ’60s and ’70s classics and originals, with distorted guitars and jangly synths layering psychedelic ooze onto timbales and güiras. ‘Jubilee’. After all, a jubilee is a celebration of the passage of time
- a festival to usher in the hope of a new era in brilliant technicolor.
Zauner’s first two albums garnered acclaim for the way they
grappled with anguish; ‘Psychopomp’ was written as her mother
underwent cancer treatment, while ‘Soft Sounds From Another
Planet’ took the grief she held from her mother’s death and used it
as a conduit to explore the cosmos.
