Ein Jahr nach Veröffentlichung des letzten GOAT-Albums "Oh Death" kündigen die maskierten Schwed*innen nun den Nachfolger "Medicine" an, der am 13. Oktober auf Rocket Recordings erscheint. In der ersten Single "Unemployment Office" ergänzen sie ihren Psych-Rock um Elemente aus dem 70s-Progressive. Nicht nur die neue Single, sondern auch das gesamte Album hat eine durchgängig zurückhaltendere, warme Ausstrahlung, und die Band deutet an, dass das übergreifende Thema des Albums die Vergänglichkeit im Leben ist - in all seinen verschiedenen Facetten: "It's about the impermanence of life in different ways: sickness, relationships,love, death and how our time is finite." Es ist schwer zu sagen, wie oft die Mythologie und das Geheimnis von GOATs Hintergrundgeschichte neugeschrieben werden kann, aber das neue Album macht Schluss, nur in der Vergangenheit zu schwelgen, und präsentiert einem etwas sanfteren Psych-Folk-Sound, der immer noch Goat ist. Die einzelnen Identitäten, die an den drei Alben der Band beteiligt sind, bleiben geheimnisumwittert: GOAT-Sprecher behaupten, dass die Gruppe lediglich ein fortlaufendes Mehrgenerationen-Kollektiv von Musiker*innen aus dem isolierten schwedischen Ort Korpilombolo ist. Die Geheimhaltung der einzelnen Mitglieder und der Mangel an Informationen über Korpilombolo tragen wenig dazu bei, die Behauptungen von GOAT zu untermauern oder zu widerlegen. So "unnahbar" auch ihre Gerschichte klingt, so mysterös beschreib die Band auch ihre Musik: "We often talk about how all music is world music and all other genres are old fashioned. All you can hear is the universal similarity between all music. The music from some old cult in northern Sweden can be the same as the music from wherever." Der Sound des neuen Albums ist die klangliche Manifestation aus nigerianischen Afrobeat, deutschen Krautrocks, Funk und düsteren, halluzinatorischen Rock. Passend zum Titel "Medicine" muss dieses Medikament also sehr stark sein. Unabhängig von Dosierung und Art der "Medicine" - es ist Zeit sie jetzt einzunehmen. Oktober bei Young erscheint, vereint die Erfahrung von 24 Jahren in acht eklektischen Tracks. Mit der aufstrebenden Sängerin Ava Gore als Backgroundsängerin ist "Abandon All Hope" ein kühnes Statement, das Ethan P. Flynn zu einem eigenständigen Künstler macht. Was als Lockdown Homerecording Projekt von Lars Schmidt Subterfuge begann, ist mittlerweile zu einer passablen Band aus alten Bekannten herangewachsen durch Christoph Schneider Klee, Clayton Farlow, Soccer, Philipp Breuer [Pale] und Mark Specht [ehem. Subterfuge]). Mit Don'ts and Dos liegt nun das Debut-Album vor, welches am 25. August digital sowie als CD und Anfang Oktober auf Vinyl über Subjangle und Less Records erscheint und über Cargo vertrieben wird. Nach der hochgelobten Simple EP im letzten Jahr (drei dieser Tracks sind als neue Versionen auf diesem Album zu finden) ist The Radio Field zurück, um uns mit ihrem Debüt "Don'ts and Dos" eine Art musikalische Archäologie des Jangle-& Twee-Pop der 80er und 90er Jahre zu liefern, mit herrlich knackigen, klaren, hochmelidiösen Riffs plus des den einehmenden Vibes des College-Rocks, welcher nie weit entfernt anklingt. "Die Songs von The Radio Field bohren sich wie ein kleiner fieser Alien-Wurm durch meinen Gehörgang direkt in das Wohlfühlzentrum meines Gehirns - und bleiben dort für immer! Schon das Debüt 'Simple EP', die Lars (man kennt ihn von der institutionellen Düsseldorfer Band Subterfuge) noch ganz alleine eingespielt hat, war grandios, jetzt kommt endlich das erste Album. Die zehn im Domblick Studio von Bassist Christoph in Köln eingespielten und mit einigen prominenten Gästen (Robert Stadtlober, Stefanie Schrank, Phantom Handshakes, Bukahara) veredelten Stücke sind durch die Bank weg Hits! Braake - eine fünfköpfige Gestalt, die mit sicheren Schritten eine dunkle Nebenstraße des deutschen Pop heruntergelaufen kommt. Im Oktober 2023 werden sie uns mit ihrem Debütalbum "Kann ja alles sein" erreichen - im Herzen wie im Hirn. Benno Bings, Till Schomburg und Gregor Zenns lernten sich in ihrer Berliner Stadtrandjugend kennen. Schließlich stießen Camillo Kießig und Julian Colin dazu. Letzterer fungiert ebenfalls als Produzent und arbeitete bereits mit Künstlern wie Tristan Brusch oder Trille zusammen und betreibt heute ein analoges Tonstudio in Neukölln. "Kann ja alles sein" kommt im warmen Klanggewand vom Folk und Rock der 70er daher, aber die Songs sind individuelle Maßanfertigungen in modernem Schnitt. Accessoires von Surf-, Desert-, Krautrock und New Wave schlenkern über einem unbeirrten, aber unzuverlässigen Takt.

Ein Todesfall und zwei Abschiede: Das neue und sechste Joy-Denalane-Album erscheint am 6. Oktober 2023. »WILLPOWER« erzählt vom Loslassen, von Trauer, aber auch von einer neu gewonnen Freiheit - und von Selbstermächtigung. Ein Sprung ins Unbekannte mit wild oszillierendem Happysad-Soul von unbändiger Intensität. 11 neue Tracks, darunter ein Feature mit Wu-Tang Clan Legenda Ghostface Killah und produziert von Roberto Di Gioia - sowie mit Max Herre. Bei einigen ausgewählten Stücken auf »WILLPOWER« spielt kein Geringerer den Bass als der US-amerikanische Jazzmusiker Tim Lefebvre, der zuletzt unter anderem die Band geleitet hatte, mit der David Bowie sein letztes Album »Blackstar« aufgenommen hat. Auf »WILLPOWER« geht es nun um die Dinge, die noch kommen, den Weg, der vor ihr liegt. Das Flirrende und das Gravitätische, scheinbar wiederstrebende Pole, aus denen das Kraftzentrum entsteht, das diese Frau in elf schwerelos der Unendlichkeit entgegengleitenden Songs errichtet hat. Instrument-swapping London/Margate trio Wicketkeeper create a loose, breezy jangle-rock that’s been likened to Ultimate Painting and Teenage Fanclub. A laid back, fuzzy racket comprised of fizzing guitars interweaving with buoyant basslines and layered harmonised vocals.

They followed a split 12” with Car Seat Headrest with their debut album ‘Shonk’ in 2020. ‘Zambroni’ was self-recorded at home, rather than in a live-room, which enabled the band to play with dynamics and broader arrangements, layering multiple guitar and vocal tracks for the first time, resulting in a more melodic, considered and playful record.

He has already accrued quite the back catalogue, both as a member of the sensational quartet Dina Ögon and also as a solo artist with eight albums already under his belt. ‘Fastingen-92’ was originally released as a limited-edition vinyl pressing in 2020 on the independent label Sing A Song Fighter Records (the same label that first introduced us to Dina Ögon's music). The album came to our attention after hearing Daniels' solo band performing live at the Stockholm Jazz Club, Fasching. The band featured Love Örsan and Christopher Cantillo of Dina Ögon fame (who also records with the incredible Sven Wunder), and their sensational genre-busting set blew us away. It convinced us that this now out-of-print album needed to reach a wider audience.

‘Fastingen-92’ doesn't sit in one genre, it draws from Daniels's love of South American folk music, soul, Nordic folk music and film soundtracks, resulting in something unique, dreamlike and transformational.

It features 'Idag’, an epic, beautiful, cinematic song that introduces the ethereal vocalist Anna Ahnlund. ‘Idag’ has gained a cult following and Daniel has stated that it was the spark that started the Dina Ögon project. Tracks like 'Annalena' and 'Kristinehamn by Night (for Christopher)' sound like a new club sound that hasn't yet been invented (which Nicola Cruz would spin in his DJ sets), mysterious, hypnotic, and engaging. Other songs like 'Maj (for Tintin)' and 'Picasso' venture into blissed-out Scando-Balearic realms. Daniel's love of nature and the inspiration he draws from the geographic environment of the Swedish countryside can be felt in these tracks, they take you to other places and times and are simultaneously familiar, ancient and alien.


Alongside the collaborations with Anna and Christoper, the album features Josefin Runsteen playing the drums on 'Idag' and Swedish musicians Edvin Nahlin and Ulrik Ordin. The majority of the album was played, recorded and mixed by Daniel. If the Corona pandemic and the accompanying concert bans have at least one good thing going for them, it's the extra time musicians have to write songs and live out their creativity. This circumstance was also the driving force for the SAMURAI PIZZA CATS, who come from the Electric Callboy environment. Frontman Sebastian Fischer was behind the microphone in their predecessor band Her Smile In Grief, whose line-up also included Daniel "Danskimo" Haniß, who is now celebrating success as guitarist, songwriter and producer of Electric Callboy. The contact between the two never broke off and so Daniel also produced Sebastian's later band Fall Of Gaia in recent years, whose former drummer and multi-instrumentalist Stefan Buchwald is also involved in this new project - family business from downtown Castrop Rauxel! So while Stefan contributes the music, Sebastian writes the lyrics and Daniel, as a creatively involved producer, ensures a well-rounded overall result. Okay, before we try your patience any further, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the band name. The SAMURAI PIZZA CATS have named themselves after a Japanese anime series from the early nineties. Why? Stupid question! Of course, because they are fearless warriors on their instruments, love to eat pizza and like cats! And maybe a little bit because they have soft spots for anime and silly band names - but only maybe. Rumour also has it that "Banzai! Smack! Meow!" is an onomatopoeic description of the band's sound.

It’s long believed that dreams are a way for our subconscious and conscious selves to interact. A chance meeting between cognitive thought and the expanse of imagination. Our dreams are often half remembered upon waking, leaving bits and shards of the story left to be pieced together. That process of pulling together fragments feels infused within Austin’s Neckbolt, a band with a radiant understanding of pairing disparate elements together to create something magnificent. Introduced back in 2021 with Midwestern Drawl, their self-released debut album, the duo of James Roo and Benjamin Krause formed the project with a specific energy and an alien sound. At its core, that record laid the blueprint for the band, a forward thinking mix of caustic noise rock and vivid psychedelic pop, combining to create something wild yet ingenious, reshaping common genre ideals.

At some point between the recording and release of their debut, Neckbolt expanded, reverse engineering their sound to form a live band that could pull off the music of their recordings. The line-up grew from a duo to the quintet, with Roo (vocals) and Krause (guitar) joined by longtime friends and collaborators, Bill Indelicato (bass), Brent Hodge (drums), and Kilyn Massey (guitar), forming an instant chemistry apparent in their earliest of live shows. With members split between Austin and Oklahoma City, the band adapted their approach to songwriting, opting to record in bits and pieces as they wrote, bouncing ideas back and forth, watching songs take shape in ways that none of the members had intended, but all were quick to embrace. Neckbolt are a freaky band and their second album, Dream Dump, seizes the opportunity to dial up the strange in their own vibrant way.

Read any article or comment thread about the Seattle noise-rock outfit GREAT FALLS and you're likely to see descriptors like cathartic, heavy, crushing, and unhinged. Maybe even psychotic. And sure, those are all apt: For over a decade, vocalist/guitarist Demian Johnston and bassist Shane Mehling (who also played together in the early-2000s noisecore band PLAYING ENEMY and the experimental duo HEMINGWAY) have honed their sludgy, overwhelmingly intense brand of heaviness, punctuated by delectably discordant riffs, terrifyingly low, thwacking bass lines, and mesmerizingly tight percussion. In the live setting, too, they’re notorious for a stage presence that is so aggressively confrontational and menacing that Mehling once broke his own arm mid-set.

But the most striking aspect of GREAT FALLS, setting them apart from the murky sea of sludge metal and AmRep-inspired noise-rock bands, is their ability to paint a deeply, utterly human story through an all-out assault on the senses: an art the band has perfected on their fourth full-length album OBJECTS WITHOUT PAIN, out September 15 via NEUROT RECORDINGS.

The album is not only their NEUROT debut, but also the first LP featuring drummer Nickolis Parks (GAYTHEIST, BASTARD FEAST), who joined the band prior to the release of their exhilarating, cacophonous 2023 EP,FUNNY WHAT SURVIVES.

OBJECTS WITHOUT PAIN takes us on a bleak, purgative journey through a separation–a snapshot of the turmoil and indecision that occurs after the initial realization of someone's misery, and before the ultimate decision to end a decades-long partnership. From the foreboding intro riffs of “DRAGGED HOME ALIVE” to the end of the 13-minute closer “THROWN AGAINST THE WAVES,” its eight tracks explore the thoughts that come up when a person is staring down the barrel of blowing up their life: How did this happen? Is it too late for a new life? Will the kid be OK? What will make me happier: familiar torment or unknown freedom?

Across songs that hammer home the keenly felt emotions of life’s highs and lows, Byrd and Thompson crest soaring crescendos awash in reverb and delve to keenly felt moments of quiet introspection, with unflinching lyrics on tracks like “Undoing” and “Denial of Endings’’ that weigh choices made and circumstances that can’t be changed. Lush and dramatic string orchestration from Matt Kidd (Slow Meadow) and emphatic drumming from Jake Finch heighten the stakes in play, and Christine Byrd’s (Lumenette) ethereal vocals leave mysteries lingering in the haze. Love in the Void is Hammock’s loudest album to date, embracing daring and vulnerability with palpable vitality at its core, and moving into an unknown future without fear.

“Upopo Sanke“ means “Let's sing a song" in the Ainu language. Umeko Ando (1932-2004) was one of the best-known artists of the Ainu, an indigenous, long-suppressed community in northern Japan. She sings their traditional songs together with Oki Kano on the Tonkori harp, who also recorded the album. The two are supported by members of the female vocal group Marewrew as well as Ainu percussionists, a string player and a male singer who provides rhythmic shouts and also throat singing. The call-and-response structure of many of the songs is performed with a mantric quality in a vocal style that is perhaps best described as elastic and breathing. There seems to be a gentle smile in every note and syllable. This music softly hits the heart.

Upopo Sanke was recorded on a farm in Tokachi in the summer of 2003. We hear dogs barking, a distant thunderstorm and voices imitating animals. The liner notes that accompany the 2LP release gather the anecdotal memories of Umeko Ando and Oki Kano about the stories of the 14 songs. Oki Kano is a musical ambassador of the Ainu culture who tours worldwide with his Oki Dub Ainu Band and also gives solo concerts, always playing the Tonkori, the five-stringed Ainu harp.

The Ainu have suffered from the oppression of their culture and language by Japan, especially since the 18th and 19th centuries. Only recently, in 2008, were the Ainu officially recognized again as an indigenous people culturally independent of Japan. As a result of the marginalization, there are now only a few hundred native speakers of the Ainu language left, making it a particularly worthy object of preservation.

"Upopo Sanke" was mixed again in part by Oki Kano, before being mastered and cut to vinyl by Kassian Troyer. The 2LP plays on 45rpm and it sounds fantastic. This album was the second album by Umeko Ando, the follow-up to „Ihunke" and also re-released in 2018 by Pingipung together with Oki Kano.

Sofia Kourtesis’ sultry remix of Perel ‘Matrix’ finally gets a well deserved vinyl release. ‘Ice Cream Cake’ by Cologne’s newcomer M.A.P.E. helps cooling things down a bit before another debutante, Argia from Madrid makes her first entry to the Kompakt catalogue. When Akiko Suzuki Left Her Home Town Of Aomori For Tokyo In The Early 70s Aged Just 15 To Become A Professional Musician, She Quickly Started Making Waves On The Local Music Scene Performing At The Jazz Club Rob Roy. In 1973 She Released A 7" With The Group Zariba And Caught The Attention Of A&r Man Koki Miura. She Then Recorded One Song, "oinaru Shiino-ki" With Haruomi Hosono On Bass And Drummer Tatsuo Hayashi (who Features On Many Hosono Albums And Also Hiroshi Sato's 1979 Album Orient) With A Full Album In Mind.

After A Marriage With Musician/producer Makoto Yano And The Birth Of Her Son (named Fuuta), Yano And Her Team Resumed The Recording Of The Album And Decided To Pitch Little Feat For A Collaboration As She Loved The Group. Against All Odds They Said Yes And Yano Left Tokyo For Los Angeles In March 1976 To Record A Full Side With Them. The Legend Has It They Found It So Difficult To Keep Up With Yano's Compositions They Returned Some Of Their Fee. The Session Was Nevertheless Stunning And Lowell George Even Compared Yano To Stevie Wonder. The Little Feat Blend Of New Orleans Groove Matched Yano's Melodies Perfectly, As Witnessed On "funamachi-uta Part 2." Originally A Traditional Song From The Nebuta Festival In Her Hometown Of Aomori (part I On Side 2 Gives A Good Idea Of What The Original Form Sounds Like), The Little Feat Version Is A Formidable Slow-funk Workout Not Dissimilar To Their Classic, "spanish Moon", Serving Yano's Beautiful Vocals And Sense Of Groove To Perfection. The Whole Side Is A Match Made In Heaven, Showcasing The Classic Little Feat Line Up At Their Funkiest With Yano's Unique Japanese Twist.
