There used to be a time when ring tones were important. You were easily recognizable as one of the few people actually owning one of these new gadgets called ›mobile phone‹ (or ›handy‹ as the Germans say). Later you could make an important distinction by choosing a ›cool‹ ring tone...

In May 2014 the Festival »Doofe Musik« (»Stupid Music - Songs for Dreaming, Sedation and Forgetting«) took place at Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW) in Berlin. As part of the »Anthropocene Project« the festival focussed on escapism and the special function of music when retreating from reality. Detlef Diederichsen, curator at HKW, and Holger Schulze, Head of Sound-Studies-Lab Berlin, decided to not only focus on music which music lovers usually hate, e.g. ›Schlager‹, German folk music, Light Jazz, but also on ring tones.

The audio logo of Deutsche Telekom has been part of Germany's mobile phone culture from the very beginning so it acted as a starting point to question the usual concepts for ring tones. Using Christian Kellersmann's idea of the »Pocket Symphony« ten artists were invited to come up with adaptations of Telekom's audio logo. The results were performed for the first time during »Stupid Music« and once again in October of the same year when most of the recordings you can find on the album were made.

As you will hear: The short motif, as simple and unforgettable as it is, is ideal musical material.Everyone knows it, everyone has some sort of connection to it and these ten different versions, these ten different positions, open up the most varied possibilities for associations.

It is time that we take the ring tone seriously again. As the most reduced musical form that is the most-widely available in the whole world it contains enormous and unrealised potential!

While production and approach vary, a through-line of sensitive self-contemplation rests on bright, scrappy guitars and hyperactive melodic bass. Opener “Down on Me” rides a buoyant bass line while jangling guitars frame reflections on overcoming trauma: “I see you in the mirror every time I cry / I hear your voice every time I try.” Next, the guitars trade twinkling counter-melodies on “I Care for You,” pairing sugary, lovestruck lyrics with effervescent strums: “You catch me when I fall / You build me up so tall.”

The rosy grin occasionally twists into a wicked smirk. “Dynamic” warns, “You used to paint the face, but now you’re just the clown,” while “Glass” asks, “Is it lonely at the top when everyone follows the trend, and you hold the pen?” Both tracks brim with sparkling guitar interplay. By the closing, nearly five-minute “Last Straw,” Good Flying Birds stand far beyond conventional indie-pop or 4-track punk, unveiling a roller-coaster of unpredictable changes, vocal harmonies, and instrumental cross-talk.

Altogether, Talulah’s Tape is a pastel-yellow, candy-coated shell filled with thoughtful juxtapositions and melodic experiments. Standing on the same ground as idiosyncratic songwriters like Connie Converse and Daniel Johnston, Good Flying Birds find sweetness in sadness, tear stains on a colorful flower-print couch. Simultaneously, it’s packed with the scratchy guitars and vibrant rhythms of Scottish guitar groups like The Pastels, Orange Juice, and Josef K. Zeitlose Meisterwerke: Mozarts Bläserkonzerte mit Abbado auf Vinyl Zwei der bekanntesten Bläserkonzerte Mozarts, unter der einfühlsamen Leitung von Claudio Abbado, erscheinen nun gemeinsam auf Vinyl. Diese Veröffentlichung vereint zwei Referenzaufnahmen: Emmanuel Pahud: Flöte und Harfe in Harmonie Emmanuel Pahuds hochgelobte Einspielung von Mozarts Konzert für Flöte und Harfe in C-Dur aus dem Jahr 1996, gemeinsam mit der Harfenistin Marie-Pierre Langlamet, besticht durch Pahuds elegantes und ausdrucksstarkes Flötenspiel. Emil Friis’ neues Album Moving Images, seine erste Soloveröffentlichung für das Klassik-Imprint 130701 des Labels FatCat, ist ein Zeugnis der menschlichen Verfassung und der Dinge, die uns als Spezies zusammenbringen. Es ist inspiriert von den Bewegungen des menschlichen Geistes und den Geschichten, die wir durch Musik, Worte, Kunst und Film teilen.

He"s produced albums for Ed Askew (Tin Angel Records), Bob Martin and Ralph White (Worried Songs), Will Beeley (Tompkins Square), Chris Gantry (Drag City), Larry Jon Wilson (1965 Records/ Drag City) and worked on reissue projects for Numero Group. Collaborators on his DIY solo albums include David Hidalgo, Kelley Deal, Augie Meyers, Jeff Parker, Spooner Oldham, Will Oldham, and many others. He lives in the rural town of Bulverde, TX with his two dogs, three cats, five toads, and wife. His previous band, The Black Swans, released 5 albums and toured for 10 years.

Waxwork Records in collaboration with Walt Disney Records announce the pre-order for the highly anticipated Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Original Video Game Soundtrack vinyl album. Composed by Stephen Barton and Gordy Haab, this 2xLP vinyl edition is set for release on February 2, 2024, offering fans an immersive musical experience from the acclaimed video game.

The soundtrack, comprised of 27 tracks, is pressed on 150-gram colored vinyl and presented in heavyweight gatefold jackets with a matte satin coating. To enhance the collector's experience, the vinyl will be accompanied by an 11” x 11” four-page booklet, providing a glimpse into the creative process behind the mesmerizing score.

In this show from January 21, 1981, Doug Sahm (AKA Sir Doug) reunites with original band members Augie Meyers and Johnny Perez, along with the legendary Alvin Crow on guitar and Speedy Sparks on bass for a no-holds-barred, rip-snortin’ Texas rock ‘n’ roll revival. Back in the day, the SIR DOUGLAS QUINTET was Texas’s answer to the British Invasion. With the arrival of the Beatles, Sir Doug & Co. saw their chance to break out the rough, Chicano-influenced rock they had been playing in the joints around San Antonio. They donned English-looking suits and hit the charts with “She’s About A Mover” in 1965. Nobody was quite sure where they came from, but they rode the English-pop wave to fame. There’s something contagious about Augie’s cheesy, pumping Vox organ chords and Sir Doug’s chang-a-chang rhythm guitar over Johnny’s Mexican drumming style, drenched in psychedelia, that stood out from everything else at the time. And it still does today. You may not be able to sit down through “She’s About A Mover” or “Mendocino,” but that’s OK. Anfang 1996 begann Dylan, der seit der 1990er LP Under The Red Sky kein Album mit Eigenkompositionen veröffentlicht hatte, mit der Arbeit an neuen Songs. Von August bis Oktober ging er mit Daniel Lanois, der sein 1989er Album Oh Mercyproduziert hatte, ins Teatro Studio in Oxnard/CA, um dort Demos für eine mögliche neue LP aufzunehmen. Als die Songs im Januar des Folgejahres Form angenommen hatten, zog man ins Criteria Studio in Miami/FL um. Die Studiobesetzung wurde aufgestockt, und so fand sich in Florida ein illustrer Mix aus Session-Musikern und Mitgliedern von Dylans Tourband ein: Bucky Baxter (Akustikgitarre, Pedal Steel), Duke Robillard (E-Gitarre/Gibson L-5), Robert Britt (Martin Akustikgitarre, Fender Stratocaster), Cindy Cashdollar (Slide Gitarre), Tony Garnier (Bass, Kontrabass), Augie Meyers (Vox Orgel, Hammond B3, Akkordeon), Jim Dickinson (Keyboards, Wurlitzer E-Piano, Pumporgel) sowie die Schlagzeuger Jim Keltner, Brian Blade und David Kemper. Das Album "Time Out Of Mind", der schließlich aus diesen Sessions entstand, avancierte zu einem Dylan-Klassiker. Songs wie "Love Sick", "Can't Wait" oder "Not Dark Yet" wurden zu Lieblingsstücken der Fans. Mit "Make You Feel My Love" gelang Dylan sogar das Kunststück, dem Great American Songbook einen neuen zeitgenössischen Standard hinzuzufügen. Zahllose Künstler, darunter Billy Joel, Neil Diamond oder Adele, haben diesen Song gecovert. Bei den Grammy Awards 1998 gewann "Time Out Of Mind" in den Kategorien 'Album of the Year' und 'Best Contemporary Folk Album'.

Kaizers Orchestra präsentieren eine komprimierte, aber dennoch umfangreiche Sammlung ihres facettenreichen und charismatischen, musikalischen Universums. Das norwegische Sextett, geliebt für seine kathartischen Rocksongs zwischen New Yorker Jazzmelodien und osteuropäischer Volksmusik, mischte mit seinem Debütalbum 2001 (das meistverkaufte Rockdebüt in norwegischer Sprache) die norwegische Szene auf, erreichte mit jedem Album die #1, gewann haufenweise norwegische Grammies, feierte Erfolge und tourte in und durch Europa, u.a. bespielte es dreimal die Roskilder Hauptbühne. Tommy McLain, one of the founding fathers of the swamp pop genre,
returns with his first new album in over 40 years: I Ran Down Every Dream
Produced by fellow Lil' Band O' Gold member CC Adcock, the album features
contributions from legendary artists who cite Tommy as a major influence,
including Elvis Costello, Nick Lowe, Van Dyke Parks and Augie Meyers. At 82
years young, Tommy has finally released the album of his career. Ranging from
the Americana roots sound of "Somebody" and "Livin' on the Losin' End" to
stripped- back, introspective renditions of early Tommy hits like "No Tomorrows
Now" and "Before I Grow Too Old," Tommy McLain cements himself as one of the
few living legends from the 1960s who is still putting out new music and touring
around the world. A beautiful look at a songwriter who (a half- century later) is
finally receiving his due.

Christian Naujoks' work has been heard and seen in a wide range of contexts, from nightclubs to concert halls, art venues and the theatre. He released three solo albums on Berlin-based label Dial Records. After his critically-acclaimed album "Wave" (2016), which has been praised as a contemporary masterpiece of ambient romance and "the most exquisitely melancholy thing he's done yet" (Pitchfork), followed by numerous collaborative projects with performance artist Ei Arakawa, filmmaker Loretta Fahrenholz and composer Ari Benjamin Meyers, among others, Christian Naujoks is back with a new record produced during his exhibition "Soft Mouth Data Service" at Galerie Max Mayer in Düsseldorf.

Mit ‘SERPENTINA’ betritt BANKS bisher unbekanntes Territorium und zwar in jeder Hinsicht – vom Sound bis zu den Lyrics, den Visuals und allem dazwischen.
Der Albumtitel reflektiert dieses Spielerische und das Gefühl, sich neu zu erfinden. Das Wort “Serpentine” kritzelte BANKS früher oft in ihren Schulkalender. Das “a” am Ende steht für eine Feminisierung dieser Idee – eine Verkörperung von einer Art Schlangenkönigin, wie BANKS es beschreibt.

BANKS ist eine amerikanische Singer-Songwriterin, Produzentin, Dichterin und Regisseurin. Seit ihrem atemberaubenden Debüt 2014 hat BANKS insgesamt mehr als 1,4 Mrd. Streams erreicht und rund um den Globus ausverkaufte Konzerte und Festivals gespielt. Ihr Debütalbum Goddess wurde von der Kritik gefeiert, schaffte es in sieben Ländern in die Top 20 der Charts (u. A. in Nordamerika) und machte ihr einen Namen für einen ganz eigenen Sound: Alternative Pop mit einem Hauch unkonventionellem R&B, mit dem sie aufgewachsen ist. 2016 meldete sich BANKS mit The Altar zurück – eine dunklere, intensivere Abwandlung der Themen, mit denen sie sich auf Goddess beschäftigt hatte. Auch dieses Album fand bei den Kritikern großen Anklang und erreichte mehrere Top 20-Platzierungen in den USA und weiteren Ländern. Zu ihrem dritten Album III präsentierte sie 2019 die aufregende, synthlastige Vorabsingle “Gimme”, produziert von Hudson Mohawke. Mit seiner eher experimentellen und fast verspielten Produktion und den reiferen Texten war III ein weiterer Schritt in ihrer künstlerischen Entwicklung. Nach dem Erfolg von III begab sich BANKS auf ihre mit 33 ausverkauften Konzerten in neun Ländern bis dato umfangreichste Tour. Als Muse von Modehäusern wie Chanel und Dior war sie bei diversen Fashionshows in der ersten Reihe und auf den Covern zahlreicher Hochglanzmagazine auf der ganzen Welt zu sehen. Sie ist auf vielen der größten Festivals aufgetreten, darunter Coachella und Lollapalooza, spielte im berühmten Guggenheim in New York und war in vielen TV-Shows zu sehen (z. B. Maybe We Never Die, Anderson East's third release for Elektra/Low Country Sound takes the Alabama born, Nashville-based singer-songwriter’s seductively vintage voice in a decidedly fresh direction. The 12 tracks flow together with an overarching sense of ambience but maintain distinct musical boundaries. The energy toggles between a hunger for vulnerability in togetherness and a clinging to solitude as a romantic self-defense. There is consternation with the speed and volume at which the world operates and solace to be found in the simple act of getting up and going. And the beguiling title track, with its woozy strings swirling around East’s celestial falsetto as it curls towards the ceiling like smoke is, as they say, a whole mood; a sense of a single night’s dusk-to-sunrise contemplation. Collaborating once again with Dave Cobb along with longtime bandleader and now co-producer Philip Towns, East has found an enticing new avenue, one that maintains a connection to his past but keeps his eyes on the road ahead.

Maybe We Never Die is East's first new music since 2018's breakthrough album, Encore, which featured the Grammy-nominated #1 AAA radio single, "All On My Mind." Heralded by critics, The New York Times praised Encore as, “…an often lustrous revisiting of raucous Southern soul, rousingly delivered and pinpoint precise. "On this seven track album we hear MinaeMinae (alias Bastian Epple) playfully scurry through his dense soundscapes on a tightrope. The sounds lying somewhere on the crossroads of psychedelic trance, exotica, ambient and melodic dance music – veering further off orbit with nontypical rhythms and dystopian percussive patterns.

MinaeMinae understands musical material similar to documentary footage which he would cut up, repitch, and rearrange freely. Most of his tracks are a mix of analog, synthetic sounds and recordings of ethnic percussion and guitar. Recently Bastian began experimenting with modular synthesis and self made tape echoes - seeking a more reduced and minimal composition style compared to his earlier quite whimsical tunes.

Growing up in a small village in southern Germany, Bastian was never interested in kitschy folk sounds that everyone would mindlessly clap and sing along to, rather he took solace in the time he would spend delving into patterns and repetitions that pleased him. His guitar strumming and what sounded to his mother like a young Philip Glass on a cheap Casio keyboard encouraged little Epple to continue on this self-taught path of developing his musical language. He then started to experiment with a tape recorder and layering sounds with non-musical samples, which his former village friends found too weird – then to eventually working with a small freeware DAW. Bastian went on to study Media Art at the Center for Art and Media (ZKM) in Karlsruhe – initially enrolled in music but the frustration and doubt of not being able to produce the music he wanted led him into film and documentary media. During his studies, Bastian was living with Florian Meyers (Don’t DJ) for several years where they would philosophize life and music into the wee hours – he encouraged Bastian to start sharing what he’s been quietly working on all these years and slowly emerge from this anonymity which eventually led to his first release on Human Pitch last fall.

TV Victor was one of the first artists of Tresor Records where he became legendary with several of his ambient and trance productions including Trance Garden 1-3 and Trancecology Chapter 1. In 1989, he launched his first solo project: Moondance - The Magic Sound of the Moon, where he lay foundations for later explorations with experimental sounds fused with pop elements and anticipated an ambient excursion to be had in the future.

In the following decades TV Victor created impressive solo works that traversed between ambient and trance, he collaborated with artists like Moritz v. Oswald, Max Loderbauer, Ari Benjamin Meyers, Paul Browse and Tobias Freud. Contrary to common mainstream tendencies he created a very unique interpretation of both genres. In recent years Victor has concentrated on creating experimental and abstract sonic spaces for escaping reality, spaces that live through the imagination of the listener. Each piece, a segment of a larger musical movement; stands alone to create new sonic continuums. Otherworldy music that is in its own sphere.

30 years after the release of Moondance and 50 years after the first landing, Lullabies For Insomniacs revisit TV Victor's musical roots with 'Back To The Moon'. The previously unreleased works were carefully selected from his vaults and restored by Berlin based engineer Brett Olke (B Ashra), the album offers a glimpse into the future by creating a soundtrack for mankind's settlement of beyond in a conceivable hereafter.

While their trademark sound has always been flourished with plenty of nods to the past - think jazz-funk, disco, acid jazz and boogie - Reel People's career has been forged on crafting new songs and instrumentals. For their latest album, "Retroflection", they've decided to flip the script, serving up a set of covers of classic cuts with the assistance of some notable vocalists. It's a neat twist and one that results in a string of superb revisions. Check, for example, the Mica Paris-fronted take on Alicia Meyers' "I Want To Thank You", their starry version of electrofunk staple "Don't Stop The Music" (complete with sublime Angie Stone vocal), an Incognito style take on Willie Bobo's "Always There" and a riotous, scene-stealing romp through Pleasure favourite "Joyous".
