From the mid-90s to 2005, Sweden’s Defleshed churned out a white hot blend of thrash, death metal, and grindcore, marking themselves as one of the most vital bands in all three of those genres. Having run out of inspiration and wanting to try other things they called it a day the same year they released their fifth album Reclaim The Beat, and ever since fans have hollered for their reunion. In 2021 they got what they were asking for when the band’s core lineup - guitarist Lars Löfven, drummer Matte Modin and bassist/vocalist Gustaf Jorde - got back together. None of the members took any convincing to reform or to push ahead with the full-length, starting to seriously write in Autumn 2021, and there was no masterplan guiding them. “We just wanted to see what we sounded like today, with new perspectives on things. We knew it had to be fast and furious yet diverse.” The result is an album “filled to its maximum with power and energy”, this made clear by opener “Bent Out Of Shape”, which is perhaps the greatest start to any of their records. They do not take it easy on the listener from there on, with the likes of the thrashy “Dear Devil” and groove-laden “Unburdened By Genius” taking very different tactics in the damage they wreak, the band making a point of not repeating themselves while staying true to that classic Defleshed sound.

Rampaging into their 25th year as purveyors of the most ruthless extreme metal, Goatwhore return with perhaps the strongest album of their storied career. Angels Hung From The Arches Of Heaven is 47 minutes of their trademark blend of death, black, thrash and sludge metal delivered with breathless intensity and an unrepentant bloodlust, making for one of the most thrilling records to come out of 2022. Featuring beasts such as the savage “Born Of Satan’s Flesh” that thrashes along relentlessly and drips with evil, the old school crossover flavored “Death From Above” with its guttural chorus, and the epic, chilling title track that is as haunting as it is heavy they cover a lot of sonic territory, everything having that signature Goatwhore feel while constantly doing something a little different. The title of the record - like all Goatwhore releases - is both deep and direct - “It is a basis of human despondency, the arc of life and its relationship with the personal abyss of overwhelming emotion and thought. A mixture of esoteric ideas and biblical scripts and the journey to the places some people care not to venture on mental paths. The rise and fall of the self and how the abyss can be a turning point for some and a passageway to oblivion for others. It is blunt and to the point, just like countless aspects of life.”

In March 2021 Dvne released their seminal second album Etemen Ænka which was hailed by fans and press alike around the globe. Eager to bring the new album to the stages, the band was setback by the pandemic as so many other bands. However thanks to their relentless work, Dvne managed to play two successful European tours with their label mates in Déluge and UK shooting stars Bossk. Even though the world is slowly getting back to normal, touring is still a difficult undertaking. So, for the first anniversary of Etemen Ænka the band decided to set up a digital live stream of 4 songs to finally bring the new songs to life to fans around the globe in a safe way. The outstanding live performance was recorded in their hometown Edinburgh together with the help of producer Graeme Young, who already produced Etemen Ænka. For the first time ever, the band performed the new songs live with special guest Lissa Robertson on violin and vocals.

Venom are an English extreme metal band formed in 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Coming to prominence towards the end of the new wave of British heavy metal, Venom's first two albums—Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982)—are considered a major influence on thrash metal and extreme metal in general. Venom's second album proved influential enough that its title was used as the name of the extreme metal subgenre of black metal. The band classic line-up trio of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon recorded two further studio albums At War With Satan (1984) and Possessed (1985) and live album Eine Kleine Nachtmusik (1986). Often cited by bands such as Metallica, Behemoth, Celtic Frost and Mayhem as major influences, they are one of the most revered bands of their generation. Venom are still fronted by original singer/bassist Cronos and headline festivals all over the globe and continue to release new music.

Zouj is the project of multi-instrumentalist and producer Adam Abdelkader Lenox. After releasing his acclaimed mixtape Tagat last year, the follow-up Metal will drop on 23th September 2022 via City Slang- On his record, Zouj creates a hyperpop cosmos full of experimental and futuristic sounds that lose none of their catchiness. Both EPs will be released combined on limited edition red vinyl.

Metal Jukebox is a cover album by German power metal band Helloween, released on 9th November 1999. The songs covered vary from bands like Scorpions to ABBA and The Beatles.

Der gefeierte Rock/Metal-Gitarrist Jim Matheos (Fates Warning, Arch / Matheos) hat sich mit der Rockröhre Steve Overland (FM) zusammengetan und die Band Kings of Mercia gegründet. Begleitet wird das Duo auf dem kommenden Debütalbum von Matheos' Fates Warning-Bandkollegen Joey Vera am Bass und dem legendären Schlagzeuger Simon Philips. Das selbstbetitelte Album wird am 23. The combination of big riffs, driving rhythms, thick yet lithe bass lines and rich vocal melodies has made for some of the greatest music of all time, and in the hands of Kings Of Mercia this recipe is intoxicating. Best known as the founding guitarist for Fates Warning, Jim Matheos is incapable of stifling his creativity. In early 2021, he started working on the songs that would become Kings Of Mercia’s self-titled debut album, bringing his distinct style yet doing something a little different. Churning out songs, Matheos’ next concern was to find the musicians who would help him realize the material, and his first priority was a vocalist. Enter FM vocalist Steve Overland. The combination of Matheos’ riffs and Overland’s vocals makes for perfect bedfellows. Behind the kit for the record is the legendary Simon Phillips (ex-Toto, Derek Sherinian), one of Matheos’ favorite drummers. Rounding out the group is bassist Joey Vera - Matheos’ Fates Warning bandmate - who brings his trademark style and professionalism to the table. With these players involved it was an easy, stress-free process throughout, making music for the love of it, and coming up with something that sounds familiar yet new, expanding the repertoire of all involved. This means songs like the half-acoustic ballad, half-swaggering “Too Far Gone” or the beautiful “Everyday Angels”, and the soaring “Wrecking Ball”, which opens the record on a high note, all brought to life in dynamic style. The hardest part of the whole process was coming up with a name for the band. It made sense to self-title the record due to it being the band’s debut, and given how much life there is in the songs it would not be surprising if it did not become the first of many, the combination of those involved creating something special, and with Matheos’ permanent creative hunger you may well be hearing a lot more from Kings Of Mercia.

It's no understatement that London Grammar's forthcoming album is one of the most highly anticipated debuts this year. Confirmed for release on September 9, the album is a result of 18 painstaking months spent writing and recording. Each of the 11 tracks is testament to the trio's innate understanding of the roles that subtlety, contrast and restraint have played in the creation of memorable, timeless and transcendent music. 'That's how this all started,' says Dan, 'and it's always been our primary goal, to keep space in the music. The way that, say, the guitar and vocal interact is massively important to us.'

Trotz dem Vinylboom, der in szenestarken Musikrichtungen
noch deutlicher ist als in der Popmusik, gab es in den letzten
Jahren bisher wenige Compilations auf LP. Dabei waren
Zusammenstellungen ein ebenso wichtiger Teil der Siebziger und
Achtziger, eben in der Zeit, als die Schallplatte das gängige Medium
war und ein Mixtape eben nur ein Tape war.
„Heavy Metal Things“ spielt natürlich auf die erfolgreiche TVSerie „Stranger Things“ an, die in den Achtzigern spielt und bei
den Jugendlichen einen ganz eigenen Lifestylewunsch erzeugt hat.
Trotz der spannenden Handlung erlebt man eine Zeit, die in einigen
Punkten doch einfacher und entspannter war – trotz dem Kalten
Krieg und unsicheren Atomkraftwerken. Die Schallplatte (und
erstaunlicherweise sogar die Kassette) gehört in diese Zeit, die sich
mit der Hochphase des Heavy Metal überschneidet. In Szenekreisen
taucht daher oft die Floskel „goldene Achtziger“ auf, denn so
ziemlich jedes Metal-Subgenre wurde hier erfunden oder klang
wenigstens bereits an. Ein ruppiger, teils noch von der Gesellschaft
geächteter Stil wurde zu einem kommerziellen Erfolg. Auch die
Neunziger, gespickt mit Grunge und Crossover, konnten die Rückkeh
des traditionellen Heavy Metal in den 2000ern nicht verhindert. Und
durch die Serie „Stranger Things“ werden Jugendliche auf Songs un
Bands aufmerksam, die in Folge nach über 30 Jahren wieder in die
Charts schiessen.
Trotzdem ist die LP „Heavy Metal Things“ keine Compilation mit
den großen Hits der Mega-Acts in diesem Segment. Im Gegenteil!
Hier wird gezeigt, welche spannenden Acts aus den USA und
Europa zunächst nicht mit dem Massenerfolg gesegnet waren,
allerdings von neugierigen und interessieren Genrefans mittlerweile
entdeckt wurden. So konnte man auch in den letzten Jahren Bands
wie Manilla Road bei Festivals wie dem Hellfest, Sweden Rock
oder Maryland Death Fest sehen. Kultgruppen wie Griffin (USA),
Witchfynde, Malleus oder Dark Wizard kehrten auch zu den
Bühnen zurück. Der Underground ist im Heavy Metal in der Tat
eine größere Sache, als man bei dem Begriff zunächst annehmen
müsste.

Metal Blade Records freut sich, die offizielle Wiederveröffentlichung der Debüt-EP von IF THESE TREES COULD TALK aus Akron, OH, bekannt zu geben. Die erste Veröffentlichung dieser instrumentalen Post-Rock-Band wurde 2006 in den NE Meadow Studios in Bath, OH aufgenommen und ursprünglich von der Band unabhängig am 27. September 2006 veröffentlicht.

A-Z, die neue Band der Fates Warning Ikonen Ray Alder und Mark Zonder, hat kürzlich die zweite Single aus ihrem anstehenden Debütalbum veröffentlicht: "Trial By Fire". Die Band kommentiert die neue Single wie Folgt: "We always felt that 'Trial by Fire' was going to be a big song for us. Als eine der beliebtesten Metal-Bands der Welt stecken sich AMON AMARTH sehr hohe Ziele, wenn sie ins Studio gehen. "The Great Heathen Army" wurde mit dem legendären Studioguru Andy Sneap an den Reglern aufgenommen und stellt für die Band einen kühnen Sprung nach vorne dar, da ihr unverwechselbarer Sound erneut eine sehr gekonnte Weiterentwicklung erfährt, sowohl textlich als auch musikalisch. For Fan Of: Journey, Rainbow, Kansas, Fates Warning, Armored Saint, Van Halen, Scorpions, Arch/Matheos, Warlord, Jethro Tull When Mark Zonder, famed former Fates Warning and Warlord drummer, started working on material in early 2020 he had a very clear vision for the band he wanted to put together. “I wanted to have a very accessible band that would appeal to the masses and would lead to the ability to tour larger venues. I knew from myself and the others that I would recruit, it would have some sophisticated music parts but the big hook was the main priority.” The result was A-Z, reuniting him with Fates Warning vocalist Ray Alder, Warlord/Steve Vai/Ring of Fire bassist Philip Bynoe, guitarist Joop Wolters and keyboardist Vivien Lalu, the combination of these players stirring up a very specific kind of magic that could not be replicated. The goal was always the same: shorter songs and getting right to the chorus, no twelve-minute songs, and everyone found it easy working to this remit. With everything else coming together nicely, finding the right singer was the hardest aspect of the whole process.

Australia’s Nicolas Cage Fighter are coming out swinging. Combining ruthless hardcore, late 90s metal and death metal influences, the band deftly weave a sound that is as burly as it is brutal, pummeling all those that get in their way. Formed in Ballarat, Victoria in 2011, the band have worked slowly and steadily to build their profile, dropping singles and EPs and sharing stages with the likes of Attila, Thy Art Is Murder, Thick As Blood and Deez Nuts, building a devoted fan base. With The Bones That Grew From Pain now primed to be unleashed they are hoping for the opportunity to tour it internationally, bringing their merciless performances to stages around the world and engaging with the new army of fans that are sure to connect with their no-bullshit stance and killer material.

Canada’s WAKE have never been a band interested in repeating themselves, this abundantly apparent from their discography, having evolved with every release. 2020’s Devouring Ruin made this more clear than ever, hammering the point home with the Confluence EP in the same year, and now they return with Thought Form Descent, their most dynamic, diverse and emotional release to date. “I’d describe the record as a place to reconsider what ‘extreme’ means. The words ‘brutal’, ‘crushing’, ‘devastating’ are overused adjectives for extreme music. We wanted to force people to confront the idea that ‘brutal’ or ‘extreme’ ideas aren’t just blastbeats or angular tritones, or, more importantly, ‘brutal’ elements alongside pointedly passive elements can create their own experience that can channel both and neither.” The result is eight nuanced tracks that run the gamut from relentlessly heavy to exquisitely beautiful, often simultaneously, and instantly grab hold of the listener, demanding their full attention. However, at the same time, they are lushly textured and densely layered, and offer more with every subsequent exposure, unfurling to show hidden depths, and taking WAKE to a whole new level.
