Bei HIGHSIGH - dem Trio aus Ro(b)//ert Lundberg (JOBS), John Dieterich (Deerhoof) und Matt Mehlan (Skeletons) - geht es genauso sehr um den Entstehungsprozess wie um das Endergebnis. Auch wenn der Bandname neu ist, wächst HIGHSIGH aus jahrelanger Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit des Trios in anderen Konstellationen heraus - dem Zusammentreffen von Deerhoof und Skeletons in der Supergroup Congotronics International, Ro, der bei den Tour- und Aufnahmebands von Skeletons am Bass spielte, John und Matt, die beide auf verschiedenen JOBS-Alben mitwirkten und diese als Toningenieure begleiteten, sowie vielen gemeinsamen Kaffeepausen, Mahlzeiten und Wanderungen. Ihr Debütalbum ,Once Bend" präsentiert sich sowohl als entwaffnend vertraut als auch als seltsam undurchsichtiges Patchwork aus mutiertem Pop und abstrakten polyrhythmischen Klanglandschaften. In einer collageartigen Weise entstanden, brachte jedes Mitglied täuschend reichhaltige musikalische Fragmente ein, die aus anderen Projekten beiseitegelegt worden waren - fast wie kleine Fragezeichen, die die anderen Mitglieder entschlüsseln und interpretieren sollten. Diese Fragmente wurden frei und ohne konkretes Ziel unter den Mitgliedern ausgetauscht; jeder spielte damit herum und bastelte an dem, was er bekommen hatte, fügte Phrasen, Klänge und Texturen hinzu. Die musikalischen Schichten, die dabei entstanden, waren durchweg unerwartet und mitreißend. HIGHSIGH hatte nicht mit einem festen Schema begonnen, doch innerhalb jedes Songs entwickelte sich ein zusammenhängendes Patchwork - geschichtete Gitarren und gestrichener Bass stehen neben träge treibenden Synth-Klängen und knackigen, treibenden Akustik-Drums. Die Band erweiterte ihren Austauschkreis und schickte Tracks an Tim Barnes, Ben LaMar Gay, Max Jaffe, Lia Kohl, Booker Stardrum und Jon Starks, um Schlagzeug-, Cello- und Kornett-Parts einzufügen. The neo-soul movement of the late 1990s, which fused classic soul sounds with contemporary elements, heralded the arrival of some of the greatest R&B recordings of the decade. Albums like Lauryn Hill's The Miseducation Of Lauryn Hill, D'Angelo's Brown Sugar, and Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite were all born of this trend, while artists such as Mos Def, The Roots, and Common whole-heartedly embraced the sound, creating some of their most timeless material in the process. These are some of neo-soul's great successes, but a slew of underground acts were what set the initial blueprint for their more pop-friendly acquaintances to follow. Acts such as R&B duo Groove Theory. The New York pair, consisting of singer/songwriter Amel Larrieux, and producer Bryce Wilson, (A veteran of the legendary 80s electronic group Mantronix) helped set the tone for neo-soul via their lone studio release, the self-titled Groove Theory. The nearly hour-long record features 14 tracks of Wilson's smooth soul arrangements and atmospherics merged with golden era boom-bap beats, and Larrieux's siren-quality vocals, inspired equally by a combination of Native Tongues, peak Marvin Gaye, Joan Armatrading, Soul II Soul, as well as elements of breakbeat, jazz fusion, and even trip hop. It's a definitive, but often overlooked classic of the 1990s, which helped expand contemporary R&B's sound, render Billboard hits out the tracks "Tell Me", "Keep Tryin'", and "Baby Luv", and even found the time for a Todd Rundgren cover. On the cusp of Groove Theory's 25th anniversary, Get On Down is proud to bring you this vinyl reissue of an underrated 90s gem. The original record has never been re-released on wax since its 1995 debut, but is now presented here with fully remastered audio, and bundled in a full-color insert sleeve with complete lyrics and liner notes.

Born at the turning point between apartheid and democratic South Africa, the Xitsonga bubblegum-disco duo Chibuku embodies the energy of a time of change,as Nelson Mandela was released from prison and kwaito began to emerge. Althoughthey did not achieve the fame of figures such as Paul Ndlovu or Penny Penny, their only album Maxambe (1992) is now considered a precious time capsule, a raw disco treasure rediscovered by lovers of forgotten music. Behind the project is Dr Joe Shirimani, a guitarist, singer, composer and producer of genius from Tzaneen and Soshanguve, recognised as one of the major architects of South African disco and bubblegum. Long overlooked, Maxambe nevertheless bears witnessto an era and a social perspective: migration ("Lekomfere"), debt and economics ("Xikweleti"), and family relationships ("Mhamazala"). The music is festive in appearance, but deeply rooted in the reality of its time. Released on Tusk/Diamond Music, an iconic label of the 1980s and 1990s bought out by Gallo Record Company, Chibuku is now emerging as a diamond rediscovered from the archives of South African disco. Its name, borrowed from a millet beer popular in several southern African countries, sums up the spirit of the group: popular, sincere and deeply rooted in local culture.

Fourteen years after its original release, Dux Content returns with a newly remastered version of Lifestyle, the cult album by A. G. Cook and Danny L Harle.
Around its initial release, very little information existed about Dux Content beyond the description “audience entertainment specialists”. Lifestyle was initially self-released in 2012, before a limited reissue from PC Music in 2013 as a digital download, continuous mix, and video by Daniel Swan.
Lifestyle remains a remarkably singular and forward-thinking record, capturing a slice of Cook and Harle’s formative years. The album contains unmistakable traces of the musical sensibilities and maximalist production that would later define the pair as highly influential figures in contemporary and experimental pop.

A. G. Cook is an artist, producer and songwriter best known as the founder of influential record label PC Music and for his work as executive producer for Charli xcx on the albums BRAT, Charli, Pop 2, Number 1 Angel and the forthcoming Music, Fashion, Film. Other credits include work with Beyoncé, Hikaru Utada, Oklou and Turnstile.
Danny L Harle is a music producer and composer, and founding member of PC Music. His work includes executive producer credits for Caroline Polachek’s albums Pang and Desire, I Want to Turn Into You, as well as collaborations with Dua Lipa, Clairo, Carly Rae Jepsen and PinkPantheress. This year, he released his album Cerulean via XL.

The talented Mr. K continues to build up the most comprehensive collection of DJ essentials to hit the 7-inch format with this latest offering of two beloved classics from the golden era of neo soul. First up is Jill Scott’s self-empowerment anthem ‘Golden’, here the original version stitched together with an unreleased 2005 breakdown remix by London crew Blackbeard. Using sweeping strings from the Blackbeard version, dramatically building to a tambourine acapella & original track makes for a masterful edit, one even more impressive when it’s done as seamlessly as this. The flip side ups the tempo with Mos Def’s ‘Umi Says’, a unique hybrid of broken drums, swirling keyboards (courtesy Weldon Irvine Jr. and Will.I.Am!), a propulsive bassline, and those instantly addictive vocals. Mr. K adds a solid minute of intro, giving the song the room it deserves to breathe, and just lets things simmer without distraction. Another masterclass at the edit board, and another gem to add to our growing treasure trove of work from Mr. Krivit in maximum sonic fidelity both for their first appearance in a 7-inch format.

Right from the start the listener is cast into orbit with driving percussion and abstract sound effects. Soon they are followed with a morphing bass sound and cymbals which lock the groove into place, cranking the drive to the max. As the track progresses the landscape of sound reveals its nature with metallic quality, like schrapnel from a barren city. Truly a Deep Techno banger which will without a doubt fill a dance floor.

A2. MTRL - Taris
The listener is slowly submerged into the waves of percussive bass sounds and menacing sweeps of noise which remind of a storm in a desert, the horizon only slightly glimmering behind the veil of sand. Soon the listener is introduced with a pounding kick drum, almost making the landscape seem even more ruthless as the track progresses.
Quality, heady Deep Techno.

B1. Polygonia - Division Claudio PRC Remix
The hypnotic Techno maestro Claudio PRC twists the idea of the original track into a mind explorative voyage with a triplet feel. The remix is shrouded in melancholy with distant pad sounds, which add a nice tension to the track. As usual, a brilliant remix from Claudio PRC.

B2. MTRL - Taris Mary Yuzovskaya Remix
On the remix the Berlin based producer is molding the source material into a driving and psychedelic track, functional yet synapse tingling. Now the bass has a bit more liquid-like quality and the overall soundscape is more abstract. Hallucinatory effects of noise are filling the spaces between the sounds, almost like being surrounded with faint whispers. Driving and psychedelic Deep Techno done with finesse.

Bidule 2.0 is an unique reinterpretation of Pierre Henry’s little-known sound heritage combined with ErikM’s original composition. The album explores previously unused raw materials, transformed through ErikM’s highly digital approach, balancing fixed composition and unexpected sonic events, a singular sonic experience where where historical archives and contemporary creation converge.

"Bidule 2.0 is a composition by ErikM that revisits a selection of the unused sonic heritage of composer Pierre Henry, covering the period from 1950 to 1974, sourced from the Son/Ré studio and digitized by the BnF (Bibliothèque nationale de France). Over the decades, Pierre Henry and his team accumulated a vast collection of sonic materials from their studio research.This sound library, recorded on analog tape, is a testimony to the recording techniques of that era — including the quality of microphones and recording media, as well as the acoustics of the recording spaces — all of which define the sound of a time. Not wanting to create a remix from the composer’s iconic sounds, I chose instead to work with selections of raw material from unused recording sessions, 168 sequences ranging from one to twenty-two minutes each. Isabelle Warnier and Bernadette Mangin provided me with sessions of prepared piano, series of electronic sounds, feedbacks, and voice recordings. Pierre Henry’s analog sounds were, for the most part, processed through successive stages (up to five generations of transformation), using a custom electronic device: Idiosyncrasie 9.3, built on Max/MSP and Lemur." - ErikM

HUMAN ERROR CLUB is keyboardists Diego Gaeta and Jesse Justice and drummer Mekala Session. Gaeta is a jazz-trained pianist with a restless harmonic imagination. Justice honed his chops making beats before trading his MPC for a Fender Rhodes, always maintaining a producer"s ear for texture and detail. Session, raised in Los Angeles" Leimert Park, studied under the legendary drummer Billy Higgins, and also leads the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra. All hailing from different corners of LA, these longtime musician friends came together in 2019 as a solution to a recurring dilemma: good bassists are hard to find. What was originally meant to be a one-off for the underground series BackbeatLA turned into a regular thing, and soon the trio was in the studio recording what would become their debut album.

Hausu Mountain co-founder Maxwell Allison returns to the label under his moniker Mukqs with an hour-long progressive ambient statement entitled Juckport. Performed live on a solitary sampler in a single take, the album shifts from warp-speed blasts of glitch to iridescent jazz fusion piano sketches to expanses of ecstatic synthesis. Allison's improvised approach to live sound collage blends innumerable layers of texture and oblique harmony into a continually thrilling electro-acoustic mosaic. Each track begins as a bank of samples sourced from Allison’s collection of synthesizers, drum machines, and field recordings, arrows pointing in a direction but without established counterpoint. Spontaneity, and the sometimes chaotic juxtapositions it engenders, undercut any traces of machine logic in the music as it expands and contracts organically. It is the product of hands moving in real space, in real time, for an extended period. Juckport is animated by a duality of glitched-out abstraction and intangible bliss. Synthesizer pads stretch beyond the imagination’s horizon line, counterbalanced by a churn of clipped samples that scatter across the stereo field like rapidfire psychedelic flashbacks. Cohesion emerges through textural continuity and development rather than repetition or pattern-making. Blink and innumerable details might slip by unnoticed, and the landscape might have shifted entirely. Still, as more viscous sounds enfold the listener, they communicate a calm, settled mindset, reflecting the motion of a creative mental state; large amounts of information are synthesized into a focused stream that reacts intuitively with the introduction of each new complicating element.

For WOLFEP088, we’re welcoming an Italian stallion to the WOLF stable. DJ Soch is a renowned DJ, producer, and label owner whose roots in house music run deep. Beginning his journey behind the decks in the mid-1980s, he has spent more than four decades honing a sound shaped by house, techno, disco, funk, hip-hop, and the timeless influence of Detroit and Chicago. As the founder of Black Angus Records and a resident DJ at the renowned Italian club Serendipity, he has shared lineups with some of the best to ever do it, helping to shape Italy’s underground electronic music scene.

When his tracks hit the WOLF inbox, we knew we were onto something special. The first one we heard, ‘Let Me Tell You’, was an instant yes, must sign moment. There’s skippy drums, warm keys, church organ, a heavy bassline and a pleading, soulful male vocal. One of those tracks that should come with a neck-brace. Soulful, but powerful. Mit seinen gefeierten Aufnahmen mit der NTU Troop wurde er schnell zu einer prägenden Figur des Spiritual Jazz und schuf ein Werk, das Generationen von Musikern und Zuhörern gleichermaßen begeistert. Sein Spiel – lyrisch, tiefgründig und unverkennbar gefühlvoll – zählt nach wie vor zu den markantesten Stimmen des Jazz.
