Downshift

After his debut LP "Event Horizon" which came out earlier this year Exploit shifts to exploring the inner space rather than outer space. Melancholic "Downshift" is full of synthesized string sounds and atmospheric arpeggios. The B-side, "Shift Down", uses a similar syncopated rhythm for strings, but eventually developes into a large dancefloor-bomb.

Steve Bicknell - *8* Lost Recordings 8: Transcendence

After a nine-year hiatus, Sheree Rashit and Steve Bicknell relaunch Cosmic Records with the Transcendence EP within their LOST RECORDINGS division. Founded in 1993, the label ran in conjunction with the pair's infamous LOST events, which introduced acts such as Jeff
Mills, Robert Hood and Basic Channel to the UK dancefloor. Past
COSMIC releases include productions and remixes from US artists such as Juan Atkins, Tyree Cooper, DJs Funk and Rush alongside prominent UK names working under pseudonyms devised for Cosmic.

Having previously released via Perfecto and Mute, COSMIC has provided a home for Steve Bicknell's releases since its' inception. His next phase continues the LOST RECORDINGS series that began in 1996 with the 8th segment, Transcendence. Comprising 4 untitled tracks in Steve Bicknell's inimitable style - a depiction of the LOST dancefloor - Transcendence, LR 8 is hypnotic with depth and soul, transcending boundaries. Initially vinyl only.

Johannes Volk - Desert Labyrinth Ep

Keeping up a high rate of release but just as high level of quality, the Cinematic label turns to German DJ, producer and Exploration label boss Johannes Volk for its next EP, with a typically idiosyncratic remix from Greek dub techno man XDB. Volk has been producing conceptual techno since 2006, debuting with a fine EP on the revered Axis label run by techno royalty Jeff Mills. Since then he has continued to evolve on labels like Steffi's Dolly as well as his own vinyl only imprint, and does so once again on this release.

Opening track Desert Labyrinth is built on a firm bed of rubbery kick drums and ticking percussion and is run through with sweet and serene Detroit pads that speak of the future. Some pristine melody work and a nagging, drone like bassline drags you deep down the rabbit hole.

The same track gets remixed by XDB, someone with an increasingly high profile thanks to his deep and dubby drone techno labels like Sistrum, Echochord and Diamonds & Pearls. Here he does his trippy, hypnotic, long-form thing once again and elongates Desert Labyrinth into a rolling groove peppered with mildly manic melodies and dramatic pad patterns: it's excellent stuff as ever from the Grecian.

Next up Photon Sphere is a more broken, hiccupping beat with expertly defined percussion. It's a jacking track that will make bodies move on the dancefloor but is far from just functional fodder thanks to the delicate way in which pads and synths are layered on top of each other to levitating effect.

Charging Particles is a quick licked march through a darkened cosmos with curious chords, lashing FX and a firm focus on the future, as techno should always have. Deep and warm; heady yet propulsive it's emotive techno for mind, body and soul.

Various Artists (bnjmn, Delta Funktionen, Herva, Bleak, John Beltran ) - 100dsr/var5

All good things must come to an end and so it is that the landmark series of EPs from Delsin wraps up with instalment 5.
The last part of the 100th release celebratory jigsaw comes from BNJM, Delta Funktionen, Herva, Bleak and John Beltran. It's a great final chapter that completes the story of the label by offering timeless and melancholic sounds from a wide spread of genres.

First is the murky underwater ambiance of BNJMN's 'Dive', which ripples and echoes beautifully before Delta Funktionen's 'Petrol' offers up far more raw and angry sounds in a heavyweight, spitting electro mould. 'Radio Mutterings' sounds just like that, with skittish frequencies, bristling white noise and only the most feint traces of melody anywhere within earshot.

On the flip side, one Swedish techno's finest, Bleak, unravels some steely techno loops and underpins them with a thick bed of rubbery kick drums and the final word on this excellent series comes from ambient auteur John Beltran. His 'Return to Nighfall' has bristling hi hats coated in angelic and harmonic pads and eventually takes off on a well-padded beat. It's the sort of thing that stays with you long after its finished playing, much like the Delsin label as a whole.

One per person pls Deutsche trio killing it on a new LIES BLK!
Sandro Stebnitz, Manito Rotschild, and Dieter Flegel met in the late-nineties in Oldenburg Germany while working on the loading dock of the Leifheit Housewares shipping division. Through their monotonous days of shrink wrapping ovens and loading palettes of stainless steel cookware onto tractor trailers, the trio would often relay tall tales to each other simply to pass the time. One such delusional fantasy was that the trio would one day ditch their warehouse jobs and start a band not unlike their mutual hero, Gary Numan.

Their fantasy became somewhat of a reality when Dieter gained access to various pieces of musical equipment when his uncle Hans came upon a sudden and untimely death. Unphased by this tragic event, Dieter rallied up his small group and hit the garage, practicing and recording every evening in hopes of making it, just like Gary did.

Here we have on record, the only document of their time in the makeshift studio, a 15 minute electronic jam simply titled "Sketch 1"

We hope you enjoy listening to this just as much as Sandro, Manito, and Dieter did making it.
Singled sided 12 inch with etching.

Argy & Alex Picone - Eternal Moment

Argy returns to Memento after remixing Italys' house stars Pastaboys, this time teaming up with one of the country's hottest and internationally renowned producers, Alex Picone.

The two of them have released on some of the most revered contemporary record labels: from Cocoon to Cadenza, from Defected to Poker Flat, from Ibadan to Bosconi Records, the list goes on.

Their two-tracker opens with 'Eternal Moment': after an epic old-school synth intro, the booming kick drum leads the way to a galloping acid rumble and to an orgy of claps and hi hats, until the vicious vocal snippets welcome the uplifting and joyous melody.

'This Is How It Goes' follows the same path with sick percussions and hi hat's frenzy, while the bass line and the synth play along harmonically. Sudden breaks give a sense of suspended groove, cleverly designed to bring the rhythm back soon after in a burst of energy.

The guys here are showing their impressive skills in crafting this ambitious ep: after just one listen, it's clear how these tunes stand out from the ordinary mess it's more and more likely to find in the market today. With a hint to house music's history and legacy, they have reworked the genre's distinctive features, making them as fresh and cutting edge as they haven't been in a long time.

Pastaboys - Tresca (incl Argy Remix)

For the label's 14th release, Memento welcomes the collaboration of Italy's finest house enthusiasts Pastaboys, who bring their love of dance music's black roots and afro-american soul sounds, combined with an exquisite european-influenced sense of rhythm and melodies. "Tresca" evolves around a sweet italo-disco bass that sends the listener back to the 70s: a soundtrack to a sleazy underground movie, with nightmare-ish synth chords in the background. Strong claps and percussion build the tension up to a Donna Summer-esque break, leading the track to an anthemic climax ready to shake the asses of all the party people out there. Argy's remix adds loopy vocal samples while making the bass more muscular and playing with retro-sounding big-room house synths, perfectly matching the spirit of the original cut but at the same time taking it to the next level. A specta cular two-tracker, which stands out as a devoted tribute to the legacy that shaped the history of house and disco music, from turning inspiration into a brilliant and contemporary piece of work.

Hieroglyphic Being - Acid Rain Under The Stars

An explosive caustic acid concoction awaits from within the grooves of this gargantuan twelve inch from Chicago heavyweight, Hieroglyphic Being. 'Free the Energy (No Vocal Energy)' is highly volatile, with severely unforgiving and distorted drum programming, this violently radioactive adventure is nothing short of brutal and certainly not for the squeamish. Title cut, 'Acid Rain Under the Stars' paints a dreamy landscape, while the acidic protons and neutrons busily rebound in the background on this elongated, hypnosis-inducing and beautifully mind-distorting headtrip. Straight outta nowhere like an atom bomb!

18.10.2013

dualit is the collaboration of German producers Mascon and Oliver Rosemann. For our fifth release they hit the concrete techno ground running with a mighty self-titled debut ep. Through the Waveform Transmission-esque 'Triton' or equally pummeling alien frequencies of 'Proteus', the influence of heyday Tresor basement sweat and strobes on the a-side never seems far away. On the flip, mysterious UK producer Bleaching Agent (Mira, Opal Tapes, Komisch) turns in a jittery broken beat rework of 'Proteus' that's full of piercing atmosphere, while the churning bass and loose playful rhythms of 'Thyone' offers yet another peak-time option. Comes with one lock groove per side while also featuring the incredible artwork of Mixmeister, who supplies some suitably insane face sketches. Early support from Ben Sims, Surgeon, Dave Clarke, Perc, Truss, Rebekah, Norman Nodge, AnD, Clouds, Happa, Samuli Kemppi, Jerome Hill, Tripeo, J. Tijn, Paula Temple.

14.02.2014

Ben Sims' Theory imprint begins 2014 with Volume 5 of the V/A series 'The Box' in February, featuring contributions from Sandrien, Tripeo, MDL vs JR and Craig McWhinney.

Sims, fresh from mixing Fabric73, has curated the 'The Box' EPs since December 2008 and featured the likes of Phase, Hiroaki Iizuka, Ritzi Lee, DJT1000 and many more, so for the final 'Box' release Theory have something a bit special for you, 4 road tested club winners that have been getting serious attention all over, 3 of which are exclusives from Fabric 73.

First up, Dutch DJ/artist and Trouw resident, Sandrien, makes her Theory debut with 'I Left My Girlfriend At The Club' - a 909 and resonant synth fuelled cut which wraps the titular lyrics around a lean skeletal Chicago flavoured groove, Then the mysterious Tripeo drops 'Kienokki' and excels yet again with a classy, bleeping modern twist on golden era minimal techno (vinyl only).

MDL vs JR, otherwise known as Massimo Di Lena and Joseph Russell, turn in the tough and suitably raw drum assault that is 'Belmont', which has been in demand since featured in Bens much downloaded set from Detroit's 'movement' festival in May 2013 and last but no means least, Australian Craig McWhinney dives into the moody immersive textures and dubbed out after party vibes of 'Untitled (Re-dub)' to close out the EP in style.

'The Box' Vol. 5 is released on Theory early February 2013.

DJ Support: Marcel Dettmann, Jonas Kopp, Truncate, Alan Ftizpatrick, Rolando, Adam Beyer, 2562, Randomer, Pfirter, Psyk, Benjamin Damage, Bambounou, DJ Deep, Skream, Mark Broom, DVS1, DJ Bone, Steve Rachmad + Ben Sims

Charles Cohen - A Retrospective

Double CD compilation of those enchanting Charles Cohen vinyl releases + 2 unreleased recordings. Packaged in a rigid double CD Box with booklet. TIP!
"Philadelphia's Charles Cohen, free-jazz improvisor and synth composer has managed to remain almost unknown outside of his local improv scene for decades. This retrospective of his early works, all recorded between 1976 & 1989 , testify to the understated genius of his work. Fleeting between polyrhythmic cosmic patterns, gravity-tarred bleeps and noise, outer-worldly melodies, all executed with unfathomable astuteness and grace, this collection showcases the breadth of this idiosyncratic electronic musician.

One of the few people to master the rare Buchla Music Easel, his work since the 1970s has focused almost exclusively on this instrument. With his first solo European tour hypnotising audiences in early 2014, his work is finally reaching a wider audience, enchanted by his mesmerizing yet deeply focused approach. His roaming raw synths, rhythmic intensity and immersive drones have resonated with uncanny familiarity for a younger generation of electronic experimentalists.

This double CD release combines all three LPs released on Morphosis' Morphine Records in 2013, excavated from Cohen's archives; "The Middle Distance" featuring his early works from the Philadelphia's 'No Man's Land' art installment, the 'University Of Texas in El Paso' and 'The Painted Bride' Art Center performances as well as "Dance of the Spiritcatchers", originally issued in 1980 on Zero Records; "Group Motion" a live recording from a dance theater piece in Philadelphia of the same name and "Generator", a live recording from Generator Sound Art Gallery in NYC (featuring the Music Easel and the even rarer Buchla 700 series, apparently the only two known recordings of this instrument ever formally released); and "Music For Dance and Theater", a further collection containing some of Cohen's collaborations and performances in theater pieces and art installations by Jeff Cain and Tonio Guerra amongst others. This selection includes two previously unreleased tracks "Conundrums" and "Slow Blue and Horizontal".
