Finally he found his way to Relax2000 Records with four great tracks which travel between minimal house and techno, with the groove and the class to move the crowd on the dance floor.

#3 Live Act of 2013 at Resident Advisor, one of the most in demand remixers around, a total of 156 gigs in 2013, releases for Rush Hour, Ovum, Macro; booked out months in advance from Berghain to Ibiza to the main electronic festivals ... KiNK: Arguably the world of dance music has not witnessed anyone else rising so clearly from bottom to top just by the centrifugal force of sheer talent. Being based in Sofia, Bulgaria, without a support network, a campaign or any media hype, his music alone - live and in the studio - created a momentum whose end we have yet to see. Lenin said: 'Communism is Soviet power + electrification of the whole country.' Hardly did Lenin suspect what an inspired take on these words could do: post-socialist techno. A child of 80's late socialism, KiNK grew up on the home computers Bulgaria's IT scientists had created by backwards-engineering Western technology. Fueled by nuclear energy on the edge of desaster, a whole generation of kids was trained to hack. Dance music gradually dripping in through early dial-up internet connections, the acoustic fingerprints of distant parties put Eastern producers from KiNK to Nina Kraviz to Vakula under a spell. Yet KiNK spent years of backwards-engineering the sounds of Detroit, Chicago and early Warp.

Castagnet Loic AKA Loquace is a producer who's enjoyed a pretty impressive time of it lately, with his melancholic and emotive take on house music endearing him to many a seminal imprint. One such label is British label Act Natural, for whom the increasingly prolific Frenchman marks his return here courtesy of the stunning Fear Of Shadow EP, a three-tracker that's high on classy, cultured vibes from the get-go.


''It Feel'' (a collaboration with British producer Stuart Hawkins) opens up matters, with its strident pace setting the tone for what's to come. Bulging with firm kicks, a series of intricate drum patterns and an occasional vocal flourish, it wraps the listener in a warm embrace that gets even sweatier and captivating the longer it leads us astray. Full of various nooks and crannies and emotive, ominous tones alike, it's indicative of Loquace at his brutal and brilliant best.


Ubiquitous percussion is then the order of the day on ''Fear of Shadow'', as the main man allows a barrage of canny drums to rule the roost, before a subtle, humming bassline plays a focal role underneath, lending matters a tangible human feel in the process. Dan Farserelli is another man who's name is increasingly coming up in influential circles, and he does his own rep no harm at all thanks to his spiky and shimmying take on the latter. Oddball synths play their role, and while he decides not to jettison the original's vocal stabs, the overall vibe here is of a multifaceted effort that fits perfectly into the Act Natural back catalogue. As ever, it's emphatic stuff from the label - and all three men involved.

Richie Hawtin's triumphant return to the stage as Plastikman in 2010 proved that his best-known alias is as innovative and as relevant as ever. Hawtin has taken Plastikman's most classic material, originally released between 1993 and 2003, and reworked it for a truly live performance accompanied by mind-bending, synchronized visuals-a sound and light show like no other, one that collapses the distance between present-day festivals and the uncompromisingly underground warehouse parties of the mid '90s.

Italian rising artist Dario Tronchin a.k.a. Chevel made a name for himself in the 2012 techno scene thanks to his unique mixture of experimental dub oriented techno sounds. After being signed by Lucy's Stroboscopic Artefacts, Chevel's need of pursuing his own sound aesthetics brought him to launch his first music platform, Enklav.

Enklav is a label founded by Chevel himself in 2012; its aim is to release both his friends' and his own vision on electronic music, with tracks and sounds that move from minimalistic techno to ambient via noise or classic acid house.

'Rediscovery' will be the very first vinyl released by Enklav, after having grown up through digital market thanks to tracks by Von Tesla, Evn, Mudwise and the recent Quatremont College project,a moniker hiding the identities of the Enklav collective (Von Tesla, Evn, Mudwise and Chevel).

The Lp consists of seven tracks featuring both recent and old recordings made by Chevel, a package where Dario shows the best of his sound palette, mixing up old and new techniques of composition.

The use of analogue hardware and modular systems are predominant both in harder acid tracks like 'Isolation' and in the smoother melodic ones like 'The Hills' or 'Rediscovery'.

Expect much more from Chevel in the next months, with the launch of his brand new experimental deep house record label 'Monday Night Records' and his further committment to Non Series (an album planned to be released within the end of the year) we're sure this upcoming italian artist will have much more to say in the next future.

SVN is one of the most important figures on the German electronic music scene right now. His productions for labels like Acido, Sued and Atelier among others are always providing a fresh breeze to our sour ears. This time he for the first time joins forces with Swedish poetic mastermind and musician Henrik Jonsson aka Porn Sworn Tobacco and the result are two outstanding techno jams. Complaints A is the kind of techno that aims for the soul. Its dense hypnotic rhythms runs below airy, bittersweet pads that slowly moves under your skin and lifts you up. The b-side continues in the same vein, but this time the beat is harder and the pads are replaced by a mosquito sounding synth figure bringing early Robert Hood minimalism to mind. Sublime! Recorded at Neues Deutschland studio, the home base of most things good.

An album by Roman Flügel is always a sensation. That holds true for his countless monikers and collaborations as it does for his 2011 Dial debut Fatty Folders. Being the first of its kind under his civic name, the long over-due association of Hamburg's cerebral label and its group of off-centre house and techno individuals with Frankfurt's favorite electronic music producer for the thinking man and woman, proved to be a seminal one.

Now, that sort of Happiness Is Happening again. Roman Flügel's follow up on Dial takes off, where Fatty Folders landed: on a runway that acknowledges the roots of house and techno as well as its fruits, but leads to a different location. Exempt from the burden that a concept album can lay on its author, Flügel seems not to be concerned with the current trends, retro fashion or a pre-conceived topic. Free-wheeling and with a freshness akin to morning dew, he rather takes us by the hand and through ten tracks that sometimes feel like songs without a voice.

Having said that, the strongest point of Happiness Is Happening is that it has a voice. The voice of a maker who is not afraid to mix joy and pain, ambient textures with remnants dance floor euphoria, quiet spaces and loud places. So you have an almost Depeche-Mode-like ballad that the "Friendship Song" is, next to the techno city ghost story of "Occult Levitation". Slow-motion robot disco ("Wilkie") appears as much at home here as the bulky "Stuffy" or the sudden impact in "We Have A Nice Life". That list goes on and on. The most startling fact about Roman Flügel's tour de force is that its sum is as great as its parts. Nothing feels superfluous, ill-paced or forced here. Its a condensate of a life that has been spent in techno, house and its various mutations and archetypes with a sensibility for pop music, a consciousness of indie culture and an affinity for the avant-garde as such.

Happiness Is Happening is like a concept album without a concept. A testament to the fact that the concept of an album that works within the realms and boundaries of "electronic (dance) music" can be so much more than a loose collection of 12-inches or just an exercise in style: it can be, after all, a piece of art and at its best comparable to a successful singer-songwriter album without words. Especially, when the creator of all his seems to be truly comfortable with himself and at his best. Then, Happiness Is Happening, indeed. GERD JANSON

Not much is known about Lithuania's Corbie besides that he's classically trained, composes music for children's theater productions, and avoids plug-ins and samples. He solicited Nuearth Kitchen with demos and impressed us enough to merit a 12-inch single containing two tracks remixed from his unreleased e.motion.s album by two of the world's most slyly subversive house producers: DJ Sprinkles (Terre Thaemlitz) and Juju & Jordash.

The original 'Arktika' is a fantasia of lush, romantic synth washes and suavely understated beats that could've come off Roxy Music's Avalon. The tone is richly decadent. 'Sprinkles' Deeperama' reconfigures it into an even more libidinous and elegant tribal-house excursion. This version repeatedly thrusts itself into your mind and musculature with earthy yet debonair insistence. The track's effervescence never falters over its 12 minutes.

Label boss Idriss D makes his comeback on Memento with "Sunset In Kreuzberg", a vicious and sexy track that captures the magic and the passion of his dj sets and the energy he shares with his faithful crowds all over the world. After releasing "Cross My Mind" to enthusiastic reviews - it was charted and played by all the big names in the game - Idriss took some time off from his relentless gigging routine and went back to the studio: his endless touring schedule that brought him from headlining Italy's most celebrated clubs such as Cocoricò and Amnesia Milano, where he holds his monthly residencies, to playing at Ibiza's super famous Cadenza party Vagabundos at Pacha, inspired him to experiment with sounds and crazy vocal samples which fuse together to create a seamless flow of rhythm and melody. The track's upbeat synth line and funky bass create a warm groove that underlines a kinky female spoken-word which lasts for almost the entire 6 minutes: it doesn't let go, it doesn't give up, it creates an ongoing vibe that sucks you in and drags you deep down where the red light of love heaths up and welcomes you to her realm of desire. To add more spice and get even dirtier, remixes come courtesy of Highgrade Records' Tom Clark, KaterHolzig's main man and Italy native Cesare Vs Disorder and PanoramaBar regular Matthew Styles. Clark's rework gives a more muscular touch to the original, adding spacy atmospherics sounds and trippy percussions, playing around the synth loop and keeping the vocals upfront. Cesare Vs Disorder's In The Garage Remix slows the pace down making the vocal darker and more menacing, while essential beats, effected snare hits and ghostly sci-fi noises fill the background. Matthew Styles' taste for retro-influenced pad chords and discoey bass lines matches his take on the vocoder flavored vocal snippets and makes his interpretation of Idriss's tune a total afterhours classic and the perfect soundtrack to yet another late afternoon session inside Berlin's outrageous techno and house mecca.
