Monastic Love Songs continues the tradition that David has established over the course of five albums with Red River Dialect: using a song cycle to articulate a relationship with inner and outer landscapes, inspired by the Taoist approach of observing the movement of the heavens in order to understand the cosmos within, and vice versa. The joyful closing track Inner Smile was initially written as a poem of thanks to his Tai Chi teacher Hollis and takes its name from a Taoist practice.
The songs were written during the final weeks of a nine-month retreat at Gampo Abbey, a Buddhist monastery in Nova Scotia where David took ordination as Buddhist monk. The album title is sincere, with a little tongue-in-cheek. The songs mostly explore human relationships within the community, with outliers: Gone Beyond shimmers with cosmic devotion, in Rhododendron a reverie grows from the shadow of a flower. Steadfast concerns the love to be found beyond the urge to like and be liked, when you can’t avoid that difficult person. Leonard Cohen, on his six years living in a monastery:
“You know, there’s a Zen saying: ‘Like pebbles in a bag, the monks polish one another.’
David considers this album to be a follow up to 2015’s Tender Gold and Gentle Blue. The cover of that lp featured an image of him on top of Skellig Michael, in the years before the island was made famous as the home of the Jedi. He considers the visit to that abandoned Celtic monastic site to be one of the influences that stirred up his motivation. Skeleton Key speaks of what was given up to go, and what he was giving up to leave, referencing the Tibetan concept of the ‘bardo of becoming’.
The album came about through a series of fortunate encounters. David’s friend Tom Relleen visited him at the Abbey in May 2019, mentioning a postponed plan to visit the Hotel2Tango. A spark was sown: this studio had long figured in David’s imagination. Many of the releases on Constellation Records, which he had become a die-hard fan of in his teens, were recorded there. Tom contributed some Buchla synthesizer to the opener New Safe, which concerns healing in emptiness and light.
In May David was given permission by the senior monastics to acquire a guitar, which was swiftly baptised as “Malibu Barbie”. Having let the identity of being a songwriter loosen up, not playing an instrument in six months, he was unsure what would happen. In the single hour he was permitted to practice each day, songs began to cascade. The first, Purple Gold, concerns a reacquaintance with first love. David wrote to the Hotel2Tango asking if they had any days available in mid-July?
Engineer and studio co-owner Howard Bilerman replied that they did, and a date was set. Did Howard know any local drummers or bass players who might do a session? He did, too many to choose from, what kind of style? David decided to ask for his ideal: did Thierry from Godspeed ever do sessions? Howard sent him the demos. Thierry was up for it. On the day he went deep into the cover of traditional song Rosemary Lane, his double bass singing on this and on Circus Wagon.
David asked if there were any local drummers he would recommend? Thierry said “many, what style?” David tried his luck again, “two of my favourite drummers are Thor Harris and Jim White.” Thierry said let’s invite them. Thor, having met David a decade earlier, flew from Austin to Montreal for that July day in the studio. Nine months of watching thoughts come and go in meditation helped David recognise this as an opportunity to practice enjoying the day without expectations.
He is, however, grateful that this album came out the way it did, channelling some of what it was like to live those nine months in a monastery overlooking the Gulf of St Lawrence, frozen and flowing.

At the end of 2019, David Keenan premiered his concert film 'Alchemy & Prose' at the London Doc'N'Roll film festival. "WHAT THEN?" has been produced by Jonathon Mooney of Portland, OR cinematic-indie rockers Other Lives. Guests on the album include celebrated Scottish author, namesake and soul brother David Keenan, Irish poet Stephen Murphy and Nashville drummer Aaron Steele, best known for his work with Portugal. The Man and Hayley Williams. David Keenan will be touring America in September as special guest of Rodrigo y Gabriela before returning to Europe to headline his own tour through October to December.

David Nance & Mowed Sound, the first album by Nance to be released on Third Man Records, cuts deep. Memories sprout back, like the sounds of a great rock song blasting from the neighbor’s truck as it revs away into the night. There is a definite connection to the past, but the swinging guitar boogie and snarled blues you might expect from Nance and company sounds leaner and completely hypnotic. What remains are 10 tracks from a well oiled group so rhythmically together that the songs on the album seem as connected as links in a chain.

DE MANNEN BROEDERS ist die erste Zusammenarbeit feat. Colin van Eeckhout und der flämischen Folk-Ikone Tonnie 'Broeder' Dieleman aus Zeeuws.
Ersterer ist der Frontmann der belgischen Post-Metaller AMENRA, einer Band, die für ihre überwältigende Härte in Sound und Gefühl bekannt ist.
Letzterer ist ein holländischer Folksänger, dessen Musik von der Kultur seiner seeländischen Heimat inspiriert ist und der bereits mit Baby Dee und
Bonnie Prince Billy zusammengearbeitet hat. Als die beiden sich trafen, spürten sie sofort eine Verbindung.
Das Ergebnis ist das 9-Track-Album Sober Maal (was übersetzt 'nüchternes Mahl' heißt und sich auf die Praxis bezieht, eine einfache Mahlzeit zu
essen, um Dankbarkeit zu üben), das unter dem Namen DE MANNEN BROEDERS veröffentlicht wird. Es wurde in weniger als fünf Tagen in der
Doopsgezinde Kerk aus dem 18. Jahrhundert in Middelburg in den Niederlanden geschrieben und aufgenommen.

For over a decade, Dean Johnson’s rustic tenor and simply strummed acoustic guitar have been perking up ears around the Pacific Northwest and beyond. At a time when post-ambient electronica and bedevilled folk music are co-habiting, and the public’s interest in Pagan rites and rituals has been sparked by a new generation of fans. The bizarre storyline of Whistle And I’ll Come To You seems even more pertinent… and strangely haunting.
The Jonathan Miller-adapted 1968 ghost story was originally part of BBC’s Omnibus series and featured Michael Horden as a fussy professor who discovers an ancient whistle which summons up the spirits. A black and white folkloric tale in the style of The Wicker Man, the original TV programme received rave reviews.

The esoteric live score was recorded at the Hypnos Theatre in Malmö. The 42-minute soundtrack utilises stuttering tape loops on ‘Intro’ before breathing new life into the primitive John Carpenter-like drum machine on ‘Supernatural Breakfast’, while ‘Walk On The Beach 2’ sounds like a hauntological rendition of a Broadcast classic. Indeed, that effect is amplified on ‘Nightmares’, with its swirling wind and other-worldly choral effect, before the feeling of some supernatural presence is suggested on the penultimate cut ‘Evidence Of Spiritualism’

Fronted by amazing vocalist Chhom Nimol, Dengue Fever has surprisingly
universal appeal - Chhom herself is already quite accustomed to seizing the
hearts of listeners (including the King and Queen of Cambodia), as she comes
from a family best considered as a Cambodia pop music dynasty– not unlike a
Cambodian version of the Jacksons. The rest of the band is no flake-fest either,
consisting of Zac Holtzman (Dieselhed) and his brother Ethan on Farfisa organ,
Senon Williams (Radar Brothers), David Ralicke (Beck) and seasoned drummer/
engineer Paul Smith. Their covers stay remarkably true to the crazy party music
spirit of the '60s- and '70s-era originals. But there are also original songs, some of
which veer off into the darkened corridors of lost love and ghostly noir
romanticism, dissolving sometimes into spaces of genuine bleakness and
tragedy — all in the Khmer tongue. Far from mere novelty or cheap Orientophile
thrill, Dengue Fever keeps listeners on their toes, dancing to their way-out tones.

Turkish Bar or Bengi folk dancing requires approximately 100 people to do properly, and it helps if a lot of them are eating wedding cake. You put your arms around the shoulders of the people on either side of you, and then stomp around in a circle, facing in and kicking the air, until everybody is exhausted and happy. Far away from any folklore festivals, Derdiyoklar hand–built the soundtrack to this dancing as it was drunkenly executed by luckless German–Turkish immigrants in the fashion–insensitive 80s. And though the band had only two members, they decided electric saz, synthesized drums, cimbalom, and sheep sound effects were all needed to get the job done. Who could argue? This tinkly and psychoactive album, full of uniquely odd overdubs and buzzy, flanged–out guitar solos, can now be yours. First time ever reissue. Outernational pop group Derya Yildirim & Grup Simsek unveil the second and final part of their double album "Dost 1&2". Once again, their subtle and groovy Anatolian psych folk sound matches the powerful quality of the songs often led by Yildirim"s sublime vocals and baglama (Turkish lute). With "Dost 2", the band have broadened their songwriting horizons and refined their idiosyncratic arrangement skills. Most of "Dost 2""s material was composed by the band, with two notable tracks composed by guitarist flautist Antonin Voyant whose melodic work brings the music to an unnostalgic, yet deep and meaningful place. The lyrics were penned by Derya Yildirim in collaboration with Berlin based writer Duygu Agal, adding another string to Grup Simsek"s bow.

Grup Şimşek is a fresh and modern pop - group which combines Anatolian Folk and contemporary grooves, often contaminated by psychedelia and progressive rock flavours.

Led by Derya Yıldırım’s hypnotizing bağlama and vocals, the group draw a meaningful continuity from the Turkish folk repertoire to heir original songwriting, with a strong sound identity and a dancefloor - friendly energy.

This June, Derya Yıldırım & Grup Şimşek, along with Swiss label Bongo Joe, are getting ready to release the new LP Dost, the collective's second album and first of two to be released this year.

Turkish singer and saz player Derya Yıldırım has been burning the candle for Turkish folk and psychedelia since her infamous performance at the New Hamburg Festival back in 2015. Soon after, Grup Şimşek was born and there started a rich journey of musical feast, exploring and rendering new versions of Anatolian classics as well as building a songbook of original compositions.

1995 war das Jahr, in dem ein neuer Stern am Himmel des Gothic Metal erschien. Liv Kristine Espenæs, die engelhafte Sopranstimme im Wechsel mit den Growls von Raymond I. Rohonyi von THEATRE OF TRAGEDY, hat seitdem viele Bands ihres Genres inspiriert. Robert Müller (Hammer), Dezember 1997, schrieb in einer Kurzbiografie folgende Zeilen: „Mit ihrer hohen, klaren, emotional ausdrucksstarken Stimme stand Liv Kristine immer im Mittelpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit. Da liegt es nahe, die Schönheit dieser Stimme in reiner Form, in einer Soloproduktion einzufangen.“ 1997 unterzeichnete Liv Kristine einen Solovertrag bei Massacre Records/Torsten Hartmann. Liv Kristine, die damals Masterstudentin in Englisch und Deutsch war, pendelte zwischen der Universität Stuttgart und den Aufnahmen im illinois Studio. Darüber hinaus tourte sie mit dem äußerst erfolgreichen THEATRE OF TRAGEDY um die Welt. Ein ganz besonderer, persönlicher Höhepunkt für Liv Kristine war der 24. Oktober 1997, als sie Nick Holmes (PARADISE LOST & HOST) an einem kalten Herbstmorgen von einer Tournee in Ludwigsburg, Deutschland, abholte. Nach einer Tasse schwarzem Tee und einer Scheibe Marmeladenbrot, wurden die Gesangsaufnahmen für die einfache, feine Gothic-Ballade „3 a.m.“ abgeschlossen. Beide haben einen Metal-Hintergrund, aber die Verschmelzung der beiden Stimmen ist einzigartig. Viel Subtilität, Magie und persönlichen Ausdruck stecken auch in den anderen Kompositionen auf Liv Kristines allererster SoloVeröffentlichung, die teilweise sogar in ihrer Muttersprache Norwegisch gesungen wurden. „Portrait: Ei tulle med øyne blå“, basierend auf einem alten norwegischen Kinderlied aus dem Jahr 1905, wurde im Juni 2023 von Geir „Gerlioz“ Bratland (DIMMU BORGIR) von Grund auf neu interpretiert und aufgenommen, ausschließlich für die Neuveröffentlichung von „Deus ex Machina“. Liv Kristine kennt diese Melodie seit ihren ersten Lebenswochen, denn ihre Mutter und Großmutter haben der kleinen „Stine“ dieses Lied als Gute-Nacht-Schlaflied vorgesungen. Bereits im Alter von sechs Jahren zeigte Liv Kristine eine besondere Empfänglichkeit für das Verständnis von Musik und den verschiedenen Arten des Singens. Es verging kein Tag, an dem das kleine, blonde Mädchen nicht sang und verträumt vor dem Spiegel stand. Das Lied „In the Heart of Juliet“ beschreibt, wie sie ihre Kindheit bewusst und unbewusst erlebte, die Glücksgefühle, ihre Liebe zu magischen Melodien, die Wunder der Natur und ihrer Jahreszeiten, aber auch die Freiheit des Seins. Bis heute bezeichnet sie das besondere Erlebnis des Singens als „my magic Bubble“.

'Songs From Planet Earth' is Deux Furieuses' third full length album, the second with Xtra Mile Recordings. Written and recorded during the last two turbulent years, Songs From Planet Earth is a beating heart signal out from this world as we fall spinning into a vortex of pandemic, isolation, avoidable deaths, political corruption, personal mourning and ultimately survival. The album documents the journey from the city to the countryside like refugees in search of sanctuary. 'Bring Down The Government' jumps on the fuzz box to demand a reckoning for all the lives. Restless and ready to pave her own way, Diana DeMuth has burst onto the singer-songwriter scene with an arresting perspective about life, love and self-discovery. Growing up on the coast of Massachusetts, DeMuth was immersed in a bohemian upbringing where she moved from place to place with hippie parents. That same restless spirit inhabited DeMuth. After seeing The Avett Brothers from the front row when she was 13, she was enamored with their raw performance and hunger on stage. In that moment, she knew she wanted to be an artist one day. So at 19, after going to college for one week, DeMuth left because she was certain music was her path. For the past five years, she’s focused on just that, spending her time traveling and playing small gigs around America, while waitressing and honing her craft. To record her debut album Misadventure, DeMuth and Felice teamed up with Felice’s longtime collaborator David Baron at a Catskill Mountain house overlooking the Shokan Reservoir outside Woodstock where the music flowed quickly and freely, and together they began to record her record. Inspired by everything from the Bonnie Raitt that was playing in her house growing up to The Lumineers and Brandi Carlile, DeMuth’s penchant for evocative storytelling and folk sensibilities shine through the 10-track record. And through those songs, DeMuth tells the story of her journey to self-discovery.

"When my producer, Tommy LiPuma, and I were deciding on the songs for my newest album, it never occurred to me that the songs we ultimately chose would be all about love. I selected songs that I personally liked, and that had a special meaning for me. However, as is often the case during the creative process, a connection among the songs just seemed to organically appear. The songs are indeed about romance. But to me there is a broader and more personal attachment to each of the songs than the standard definition of romantic love might imply. I think that these songs represent the strength of love, including the love of family and friends. On the EP 'Och sen kom vintern', the longing for something else is pervasive. The band Diket consists of Levina Storåkern, Jonathan Fimland Kleven, Oddbjørn Sponås and Hanna Skjerdal. With band members from prominent bands such as Benedikt, Ævestaden and Hey Gloria, Diket makes melancholic music with roots in the folk tradition. Diket is the interaction between text and music, and themes such as everyday life, nature and longing for something else are present throughout.

Originally sold only on Air India flights as an aural souvenir of their homeland, this record deserves a wide recognition. This rare 1983 session credited to Dilip Roy could be easily labeled as a forerunner of the worldbeat fusion mania. Dilip was an arranger and orchestra leader for virtually all of Ananda Shankar's recordings. A dj friendly release, the album features moody and exotic sitar coupled with electric guitars, synthesizers, flute, vibes, organ, a string section and some strange and wonderful percussion. Rare groove the eastern way, it is time to embrace such an exotic masterpiece.

Dirty Dollhouse is the multi-genre music of Philadelphia-based artist Chelsea Mitchell, a folk chanteuse with classical training and a retro-pop composer with a soft spot for country. After releasing her first lo-fi EP, Married in the Aviary, Mitchell received the Tri-State Indie Vocalist of the Year award and the lyrics to her song Nobody's Daughter were showcased in American Songwriter Magazine. Her follow-up EP, 25 Shades, saw a departure from traditional folk and embraced a Nashville vibe while 2017's full-length album Vinyl Child was a mixture of darkly contemplative pop songs and quiet, intimate confession. Drawing from many muses has produced a uniquely diverse catalogue, but it has also made it near-impossible to pin down who Mitchell sounds like. In sultry-toned moments you might hear Nicole Atkins, a soft bird-like peak could make you think of Kacey Musgraves, and a certain belt may summon Brandi Carlile. Though her vocals range from soft twang to unabashedly operatic, it would suffice to say that Mitchell's songs all fit under the same 'singer-songwriter' umbrella as her lyrics weave a diary page to life and her band expands on structural simplicity with subtle grace. As bassist Joshua Machiz, drummer Eric Lawry, and lead guitarist August John Lutz II are now full-time members, Dirty Dollhouse has found a new and exciting momentum, opening for rising stars like Nikki Lane and Amanda Shires and playing to a wider audience.

'In collaboration with the children of Nico Kasanda, better known as Docteur Nico, Planet Ilunga proudly presents an anthology dedicated to African Fiesta Sukisa, available as a 3LP set and a digital release with bonus songs. This release is the result of many years of preparations and was realized in close partnership with Liliane Kasanda, Nico’s eldest daughter. Marking forty years since his passing, we felt that the year 2025 was the right time to honor Docteur Nico’s legacy with this original collection.
'Almost all of the African Fiesta Sukisa songs were released on Nico’s Sukisa label which translates in Lingala for “the final accomplishment”. The music on Sukisa, crafted by Nico and legendary vocalists such as Chantal, Sangana, Apôtre, Mizele, Lessa Lassan and Josky, embodies the essence of that powerful phrase with genius, class and depth. The label ran between 1966 and 1975 and released approximately 280 songs. Ngoma also issued the group between 1967 and 1971 and, in addition, reissued material from the Sukisa label. Many of these songs have become part of the collective memory of Congolese society and are still heard, discussed, and analyzed daily across digital platforms worldwide, as well as on numerous Congolese radio and TV stations.
'The album we put together features some of Nico’s signature songs alongside never before reissued tracks from the Sukisa catalog. It furthermore contains a large booklet with song commentary, testimonial interviews from well-known musicians, journalists, fans and Nico’s entourage, besides never before published photography about his personal and musical life.
'Alastair Johnston, author of the book ‘A Discography of Docteur Nico’ and longstanding Planet Ilunga collaborator, designed a stylish booklet and cover using all our collected material. Audifax Bemba, longtime admirer, compiler and connoisseur of Nico’s music, and the author of most of the song commentary in our accompanying booklet, offers his portrait of Docteur Nico:
“After displaying technical virtuosity with African Jazz, expert and accomplished guitar with African Fiesta, which musicologist Sylvain Bemba described as a dream guitar, Nico Kasanda was consecrated ‘dieu de la guitare’ by the public in the late sixties. With his band African Fiesta Sukisa, Docteur Nico displays his wide palette of unusual sounds. While exploring the Hawaiian guitar with its clear, airy, plangent, psychedelic effluvia, he continues to replicate the piano comping technique, and adds two missing strings to his bow: a simulation of the sanza (likembé or thumb piano), whose sounds he reproduces right down to the noisemakers of the tiny tin rings, on the one hand, and the sounds of the Luba balafon on the other. The right note, in the right place, at the right time, is the triptych on which Nico Kasanda’s playing is based, a note dressed in the perfect sound. A guitar of pure emotion. With African Fiesta Sukisa, his playing takes a ‘Chopin-esque’ turn, sending out more notes in a sublime adagio. The true artist is the one who simplifies everything. Docteur Nico is a genius of our time, whose style makes him the supreme exponent of the most important guitar school in Congolese music. He is recognized by his peers as the greatest African solo guitarist of all time. "Ela", Dom La Nena's first album, was released in 2013. Co-produced with the complicity of Piers Faccini, the album received the highest praise from the international press (New York Times, NPR, Les Inrocks, Wall Street Journal, etc). On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of its release, here is a reissue of the record, now available on vinyl.

Dom La Nena is a Brazilian singer, cellist, songwriter and producer based in Paris. Having accompanied artists such as Jane Birkin, Jeanne Moreau, Etienne Daho and collaborated with the likes of Marcelo Camelo, Julieta Venegas and Piers Faccini, Dom's solo work has drawn comparisons as disparate as “a young Brian Wilson” (Wall Street Journal), “a bossa Joanna Newsom” (Time Out New York) and “Cat Power’s lost sister” (Pop Dose).

Dom sings in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. Her lyrics touch upon feelings of longing, melancholy, and nostalgia of a childhood spent living in Brazil, Argentina and France. Performing in a solo capacity alone on stage with her cello, ukulele, electric guitar, keyboard and percussions, Dom employs sophisticated looping techniques, layering vocals and instrumental tracks, building audio soundscapes that create a full band atmosphere in each venue.

Dom’s debut solo album, “Ela”, was released during 2013 and immediately praised by the international music press including the New York Times, Wall Street Journal, Le Figaro, Les Inrockuptibles, Voir, O Globo and many other media outlets. Dom's second album “Soyo”, an internationally flavored collection of indie-folk songs with wandering melodies and lightly layered vocals, was released in 2015 and co-produced with Brazilian musician Marcelo Camelo (Los Hermanos).

Dom's third full length album, titled "Tempo", was self produced and mixed by Noah Georgeson (Devendra Banhart, The Strokes, Rodrigo Amarante) and is scheduled for a spring 2019 worldwide release.
