The sequel to Lo chiamavano Tresette... giocava sempre col morto (Man Called Invincible), the film is a goofy, slapstick comedy spaghetti-western, but the Maestro's soundtrack is anything but goofy. Haunting, sparse, and riveting, the soundtrack is easily the best thing about this film and it's presented here by Overdrive in a special color vinyl edition.

Morricone 60' is the first album of Ennio Morricone's greatest hits conducted, recorded and curated by Morricone himself.

It sees the celebrated Maestro performing some of his greatest film music from The Good, the Bad and the Ugly to his recent Academy Award-winning score for Quentin Tarantino's The Hateful Eight. The album marks Ennio Morricone's 60th anniversary as a composer and conductor and features brand new recordings with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra, with whom he's collaborated on major international movie scores.

Ennio Morricone has composed over 500 scores for cinema and television as well as over 100 original musical works and is one of only two film composers in history to have received the honorary Academy Award for his lifetime achievement. Highlights include his scores for Once Upon a Time in the West, One Upon a time in America, A Fistful of Dollars, The Untouchables and The Mission. Morricone's score for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly holds the number two position in the Top 200 ranking of best film soundtracks ever composed.

The film The Light Between Oceans tell the story about a lighthouse keeper and his wife living off the coast of Western Australia who raise a baby they rescue from an adrift rowboat. Years later, the couple discovers the child's true parentage and are faced with the moral dilemma of their actions.

The film stars Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Rachel Weisz, Bryan Brown and Jack Thompson and is based on the 2012 novel by M. L. Stedman.

The score of The Light Between Oceans is composed by Grammy, Golden Globe, BAFTA and Academy Award Winner Alexandre Desplat (Grand Budapest Hotel, The King's Speech, The Danish Girl, Argo, Venus In Fur, Harry Potter).

In 1979 the Fairlight CMI (Computer Musical Instrument) was launched, the year that the BBC Radiophonic Workshop celebrated its 21st birthday. At the price of a house (approx. £30,000) this state of the art piece of equipment was embedded with an 8 bit digital sampling synthesizer capable of emulating acoustic instruments and orchestras alongside the manipulation of sound effects.

For the BRW this was a major game changer, where previously, composers would spend weeks editing small pieces of tape together to create sounds. Ingenuity and creativity in music and sound was still at the forefront for Workshop members but suddenly made a whole lot easier. This 1983 collection (a first time re-release here of the complete album) celebrated these new found freedoms most notably on the opening track where five Radiophonic composers combined to add their own musical identity to a rhythmic percussive sequence from the Fairlight.

Highlights include music from the radio production of The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy and Fancy Fish based on Saint-Saen's Carnival Of The Animals which was the first BRW project to utilise the Fairlight.

Recorded at Umiliani's personal Sound Work Shop Studio in Rome, this double album spreads its four sides over percussive experiments and other more abstract ones, with excellent results in both cases. The first disc includes also beat and swing elements, while the sixteen tracks from "Effetti speciali", though less immediate, are equally fascinating. A perhaps less known Umiliani, but this is just one more reason for a deserved and fast rediscovery.

The Secret Life of Pets is a 2016 American 3D computer-animated buddy adventure comedy film. It is directed by Chris Renaud and Yarrow Cheney (Despicable Me 1&2) and written by Brian Lynch, Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio. The film stars American comedians Louis C.K. (terrier Max) and Kevin Hart (white rabbit Snowball) as voice actors. The film tells the story about Max's quiet life in his Manhattan apartment, which is disrupted when his owner Katie adopts a stray dog Duke. What follows is a hilarious rollercoaster of events in the sewers of Manhattan, a love interest and friendship.

The Secret Life of Pets premiered at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival on June 16, 2016. Upon release, it received positive critical reviews and became the highest grossing non-Disney original animated film of all time.

Racy and doomy soundtrack filled with incredible dark jazz tunes composed by the great PIERO PICCIONI for the Italian cinema masterpiece LE MANI SULLA CITTA' directed by FRANCESCO ROSI and winner of the Leone d'Oro at the Venice Film Festival of 1963. Piero Piccioni has composed more than 300 scores for film, television, radio, ballet and orchestra, working with legendary directors as Luchino Visconti, Vittorio De Sica, Dino Risi.

Band of Brothers is a 2001 American war drama miniseries based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1993 non-fiction book of the same name. The executive producers were Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who had collaborated on the 1998 World War II film Saving Private Ryan. The series won Emmy and Golden Globe Awards in 2001 for best miniseries.

Band of Brothers is a dramatized account of Easy Company' (part of the 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment), assigned to the United States Army's 101st Airborne Division during World War II. Over the course of ten episodes, the series details the company's exploits during the war. It was the most expensive television miniseries made by HBO or any other television network when it was created in 2001.

The music for the series was written and composed by Michael Kamen, who worked with Pink Floyd for their 1982 movie The Wall and conducted The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra for Metallica's S&M. Michael Kamen also composed scores for Highlander, Lethal Weapon, Die Hard, License To Kill, Last Action Hero, Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves and many more. Sadly he passed away in 2003.

Growing up in a royal household in Nigeria, Joni Haastrup began his musical journey performing for his brothers band Sneakers and was quickly snapped up as a vocalist for Orlando Julius Ekemode and his Modern Aces' Super Afro Soul LP, one of Afro-beat's formative LPs. Soon after, Ginger Baker of Cream fame replaced Steve Winwood with Joni on keys for Airforce's UK concerts in '71 and the success of the collaboration led to further shows with Baker as part of the SALT project before he returned to Nigeria to set up MonoMono. Back in London in 1978, Joni recorded his solo gem Wake Up Your Mind for the Afrodesia imprint. Coming in a Deluxe gatefold Replika LP with printed sleeves.

The music on this record is inspired by and composed for The Golden Age of Danish Pornography - a collection of vintage hardcore short films from the early seventies, directed by Danish porn pioneer Freddy Weiss - available on DVD from Pink Flamingo Entertainment.

After a show at Copenhagen Jazzhouse with my band, Alex Puddu and The Butterfly Collectors, I came to meet an old face from the underground music business, Jan Schmidt, who I knew but not as much as I came to know in later years. He used to own a few brilliant indie labels such as Pingo, Cloudland and April Records, back when some of the coolest bands from the Danish indie scene were around. I recall that after that gig, Jan and I had a hell of a lot to share with each other: Food, music, Italian giallo and horror movies from the 60s and the 70s. In fact, just about everything!

Later that year I was signed to do 2 albums with Alex Puddu and The Butterfly Collectors, 'Chasing the Scorpion's Tail' followed by 'The Silcence of the Sun and The Rhythm of the Rain', by April Records, and even if the records did not sell so well we had a wonderful time recording them and we built up a great relationship between us.
I must admit that my music tastes have always been affected by the visions and the movies that I saw back in the days when I was a teenager growing up in Italy to the Dario Argento score of 'Profondo Rosso' or 'The Warriors'.

I probably got much more into it with time and at that point I just had to do something about it, and that is when I started to record my first solo albums after the break-up with Puddu Varano under the pseudonym of Alex Puddu and the Butterfly Collectors. This was very cinematically inspired and believe it or not I have always known from the start how to compose and produce a track from the very beginning to the very end with a perfect vision and artwork. Last year Jan told me that he was going to release some vintage collection Danish porn films on DVD and he needed to have some music done. I immediately thought of myself and believed that I was that right person for the job. I knew this was going to be something special for me.

Creating a score for a vintage porn movie has been my dream for many years and the thought that I was going to write and perform something original for those pictures made me really happy and proud, especially after so many years of waiting. I remembered when I used to go out and rent old vintage porno movies at the local video store because I just appreciated the old soundtracks so much. Can you believe that now it was going to be my turn Well, it took me a couple of months of writing and producing for the soundtracks and I wrote the whole score and most of the tracks while sitting on the couch in my living room with a glass of red wine and a funky bass line. And do you know what I am a pretty cool bass player when it comes to porno music, do you know what I mean.

Some of the songs like 'Naughty Girls at the Wild Party' or 'Black Triangle' are built up from cool and freaky fuzz guitar riffs and I also have to say that beats production is awesome. This was easy for me since I have been a drummer for many years and I just love this king of music so I did not have any trouble in the recording session and I got exactly what I wanted! But you can not forget that this album would not have been possible without the help of some of my wonderful music 'mates'... continues ...

Anima Ardens is a new soundtrack creation by Francisco López.

In constant nudity, which highlights the diversity of their bodies and origins, eleven men, eleven dancers throw themselves, body and soul, into this Anima Ardens or 'Burning Breath', surrounded by the organic sound environments of Francisco López Trance rituals or in shamanic trance, taking us out of ourselves, to the source of our emotions.

Gruff Rhys presents the soundtrack to the film "Set Fire To The Stars", released on Finders Keepers. Although recorded around the same time as Gruff's last LP (2014's hugely acclaimed American Interior), Set Fire To The Stars paints a very different picture to that of the Welsh explorer John Evans. Equal parts cocktail jazz, hazy Americana and Atomic Age bop, it's a love letter to New York in all its hopeful, post war glory - a gorgeous diversion of a record to add to Gruff's increasingly brilliant solo catalogue.

Gruff on Set Fire To The Stars:
This is an album of music written for a lm directed by Andy Goddard concerning the poet Dylan Thomas's rst week in the USA in 1950 and his uneven friendship with fellow poet - and agent of sorts - John Malcolm Brinnin. As the lm is shot in black and white and set in the Jazz age, I decided not to use any instruments unavailable in that era. I also keep the recordings as live takes. Beyond that - I didn't try and ape the style of that era in particular apart from the song Atom Bomb which on screen, plays on a jukebox in a cafe and needed to be true to the year sonically and lyrically in some way.

Playing the guitar, I formed a short lived Agro-Jazz quartet (you got a problem with that) called Video Loss with Chris Walmsley on drums, Jim Barr on double bass and Osian Gwynedd on piano. I wrote a bunch of songs and instrumentals. Some other bits were improvised to picture by Osian Gwynedd and myself. Chop Shop features Video Loss on max Moon-Ra improvisational setting.
Gruff ab Arwel arranged all the strings and Gavin Fitzjohn played and scored the brass. It was recorded and mixed at Toybox, Bristol by the incredible Ali Chant - apart from the strings which were recorded at Metropolis, London.'

This year marks the 50th Anniversary of Gene Roddenberry's inimitable Star Trek franchise and Mondo is honored to kick the year off with an expanded soundtrack release of arguably one of the greatest chapters in Trek history: The Wrath Of Khan.

This expanded edition soundtrack features audio never before released on vinyl. Special thanks to Mike Mattesino, Lukas Kendall, and Neil S. Bulk for their work on the remaster for Retrograde Records, and their help with bringing this album to life on Vinyl.

SPACE PATROL ("Raumpatrouille - Die phantastischen Abenteuer des Raumschiffes Orion") was the first German science fiction television series. Its seven episodes were broadcast by ARD TV, the first episode being aired on September 17th of 1966. Being a huge success with audience ratings up to 56%, the series acquired a distinct cult status in Germany and worldwide. Peter Thomas composed and recorded the original score, which has become a soundtrack classic and collector's item among rare groove afficionados since its original release on Philips. The music, floating between avantgarde jazz, big band beat and spaced-out psychedelia, set a new benchmark in the history of film music and science fiction scores and became one of Thomas' best known works. The title theme is the first known piece of music in pop history to feature a vocoder, a device that until then had exclusively been used for voice encoding in military warfare. Peter Thomas borrowed a device from the Siemens factory to process his voice for the recording of the countdown. The composer remembers: "When producing the score, I had complete creative freedom. No one had ever been into space, so no one would dare to tell me how the music should sound like." Now, 50 years on, The Mighty Mocambos teamed up with the legendary musical mastermind a recorded an up to date, truly global and funky 2016 version in tribute of the original theme. "Space Patrol (Raumpatrouille)" is the only official recording of the track released for this anniversary and authorized by Peter Thomas, who even plays on it himself. To give this 50 years version a new twist, the specially formed Mocambo Astronautic Sound Orchestra adds steel band orchestration to the massive brass and funky rhythm section. Orion 2016 is available as a 7inch single in a deluxe picture sleeve on Mocambo Records and as a digital download on Legère Recordings.

The soundtrack of L'AMICA" from the title track highlights the excellent piano technique and the jazz vein of the Maestro mixed with exotic and erotic atmospheres characterized by extraordinary orchestration, harp, congas and the typical persuasive vocalism of those years (all by the great Nora Orlandi). It's followed by "Rio, Zona Sul", refined samba-jazz on a massive percussive tapestry. "'Round Nassau' offers an elegant and dreamy atmosphere in Les Baxter's style adding flute and female wordless vocals. "Swingin' easy in Tanganyika" is another extraordinary jazzy piano and drums with flute melody sideways. The side is closed by a previously unpublished version of the theme that was not included on the original Fonit Cetra LP.

The B-side rearranges the themes in a more melancholy and symphonic style without renouncing jazz as in the gem Episodio in 3/4". The ballad "The Bitter Truth" is well sung by Fiorenza Mormile in English

Originally pressed in 1972 in Italy by Le Monde (a label which has in its catalog only 6 titles released in few copies for Radio and TV) is an insanely rare Library Music masterpiece. Absolute the hottest, weirdest, psych-jazz album of the era. Maria Teresa Luciani is the sister of Maestro Riccardo A. Luciani. The only known members of the session is the great Gino Marinacci on flute, here on his most obscure recording session, and Riccardo A. Luciani on all piano, fender rhodes and treated keyboard delays.


The whole Lp is outstanding with various moods and atmospheres from the groovy fuzz distortions of LOGARITMO IN DO, the funky B-boy drums and jazzy psychedelia of FREE FLUTE IN BEAT, the modal cum spiritual jazz of PLAYING FOR FUN to the frantic rhythms of TRAFFICO CAOTICO and CRAZY MORNING. Amazing hard bop on FOTOGRAMMI, experimental jazz on WALKING IN THE NIGHT and FREE JAZZ and the beautiful FREE FLUTE theme.

Outrageous drum skills, electric piano played with a wah wah pedal, studio effects and echo delays on the more psychedelic themes.

MUSICA AMORE is an extraordinary album (1972) by Maestro Piccioni which includes songs from various soundtracks showing his many facets. He utilizes the gorgeous voice of Shawn Robinson in "Right Or Wrong" and "Once and Again" (from giallo thriller ...Dopo di che, uccide il maschio e lo divora' aka "Marta' e "La Volpe Dalla Coda Di Velluto' aka "Eye Of The Hurricane'), the choir I Cantori Moderni di Alessandro Alessandroni, the band of I Marc 4 (M. Majorana, A. Vannucchi, R. Podium, C. Pes) and soloists of the caliber of Gianni Basso and Dino Piana.



An absolutely killer LP with superb arrangements, funky beats, exotic sounds ("Ebony Ride" from 077 Dall'Oriente Con Furore'), breaks, erotic lounge, beat, shake ("Abigaille" from I Giovani Tigri"), psychedelia ( Fiore Nero" from Inghilterra nuda"), and jazz, that stands as a key album in the world of Italian library music and soundtracks.

INCHIESTA SUL MONDO is a double experimental concept album, mainly electronic, on topical problems of the period in which it was released, the middle 1970's. The two records have two different arguments: STATI D'ANIMO (STATES ON MIND) and DIAGNOSI ECOLOGICA (ECOLOGICAL DIAGNOSIS). Maestro Luciani is a well-known artist in the library music scene. His very personal style is the result of musical studies from childhood that allowed him to achieve a diploma in composition, choral music, choral conducting, and more. The avant-garde and contemporary classical approach links him to artists like Egisto Macchi. Another point of contact between the two is the label that produced this double album, AYNA, which Macchi was a partner in.



The album comes out with a minimal graphic design as the original but with heavy cardboard gatefold cover with an original photo of the Maestro inside.

A tough, funky '70s instrumental score that perfectly fits the insane violence of this seldom-seen Lee Van Cleef hitman film! QUEL POMERIGGIO MALEDETTO (aka THE PERFECT KILLER) is one of the wildest, sleaziest Eurocrime movies ever made, it ultimately got made with Lee Van Cleef as the star and featuring such sexualized violence as a female getting shot in her nether regions, a straight-razor fight with trans women and some rapes that make you feel more uneasy than do most. But no rundown of the "stars" of this film could be complete without mentioning Stelvio Cipriani's funk score. Mind you, the '70s was already a funky decade of music, just as the Eurocrime genre was already a violent and sexual movement of cinema. But both Cipriani's score and the film pushed together to find new extremes of funkiness and raunchiness. Normally if someone hears playing '70s instrumental funk says, "What is this It sounds like porno music!" ... well, that's grounds for departing from his or her presence, perhaps not to return. It's terribly limited thinking to associate all instrumental funk from the decade with smut movies. And yet, I must confess there's a certain sleaziness (and I use that word lovingly) in Cipriani's MALEDETTO title track that perfectly evokes the on-screen tawdriness to come. The wah guitar. The prominent electric bass. The slithering, laid-back horns. It's an ingenious groove and yet dripping with sleaze.

And even though there's a laconic mid-tempo quality to the title theme, there's also something that drives it steadily forward. And that perfectly captures the doggedness and determination of Van Cleef's hitman character, who constantly pushes forward in his quest, even after he's been betrayed by his former partner, his new criminal organization and his woman. (In fact, it was QUEL POMERIGGIO MALEDETTO that crystalized in my mind how well the Eurocrime genre worked when operating within these "one man against the world" stories.) In any case, let all nerdy trivia questions fade away as you get lost in some magnificent, sleazy funk by maestro Cipriani. And we'll "see you in Hell, kitten.'

Cloud Atlas is a 2012 science fiction film written and directed by The Wachowskis and Tom Tykwer. Adapted from the 2004 novel of the same name by David Mitchell, the film has multiple plots set across six different eras, which Mitchell described as "a sort of pointillist mosaic." The official synopsis describes it as "an exploration of how the actions of individual lives impact one another in the past, present and future, as one soul is shaped from a killer into a hero, and an act of kindness ripples across centuries to inspire a revolution." Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, and Jim Broadbent lead an ensemble cast.

The score was composed by director Tom Tykwer and his longtime collaborators, Reinhold Heil and Johnny Klimek. The trio have worked together for years as Pale 3, having composed music for several films directed by Tykwer, most notably Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior, Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, and The International, and contributed music to the Wachowskis' The Matrix Revolutions. Work on the Cloud Atlas score began months before shooting commenced. The music was recorded in Leipzig, Germany with the MDR Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Leipzig Radio Chorus. The score was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score.

Still one of the most highly regarded horror films of all time, F.W. Murnau's unauthorised adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula, Nosferatu (1922), is an Expressionist masterpiece of the silent era. Much of the original score by Hans Erdmann (meant to be played live by an orchestra) was lost, leading Nosferatu to inspire several subsequent soundtracks, the best known of which is by Hammer Horror composer James Bernard, written for the Tanis Film video reissue of the film in 1997.
The world premiere of the score was performed by Nic Raine and the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra at the London Film Festival the same year and now, almost twenty years later, the score is being pressed on vinyl for the first time.

Downwell brings back the retro - of course its soundtrack deserves a proper vinyl release. Black Screen Records is releasing the official soundtrack to the celebrated and much praised video game Downwell on audiophile 180 gram vinyl. The pressing will be available limited edition, audiophile 180g red vinyl. The music was composed by Eirik Suhrke who also contributed his impressive work to the soundtracks of games like Spelunky, Ridiculous Fishing, Hotline Miami and Adventure Time: The Secret of the Nameless Kingdom. The soundtrack also includes two additional tracks by Ilkae (Aaron Munson). The Downwell soundtrack comes with a free bandcamp code that enables the customer to download the complete soundtrack as mp3s for free and will feature a brand new artwork by Mushbuh known for his work on Burrito Galaxy 65. Composer Eirik Suhrke on the soundtrack: For the Downwell soundtrack I set out to create somewhat sparse, exotic, dark little chiptune-centric jazz pieces. Inspired by the likes of Erik Satie, Ryoji Yoshitomi, Minako Hamano, Alex Mauer, Ilkae and Jun Ishikawa. Parts of the soundtrack were written on- and recorded off a Game Boy, other parts were written with the sample-based Impulse tracker. Myself, Joonas and Ojiro all worked closely to make sure music, sound design and gameplay all worked in tandem, with each element influencing each other throughout development. It's also my personal favorite soundtrack I've written to date. A curious man' with guns for boots, who started out on mobile platforms and PC and due to overwhelming response made it to PS4 & PS Vita in May 2016. Downwell is a game that works as short pastime or for hours of madness, excitement and addiction. While developing and unlocking new features the player will find himself rapidly spurred by the minimalistic and yet haunting music that contributes to this games joyful and unique style and makes it a experience you find yourself returning to over and over again.

The first-ever dedicated album release by pioneering female Italian film music composer/arranger/multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis (aka Mrs. Alessandro Alessandroni). Rare undercover pseudo-ethnological studio sessions made under her experimental alter ego Kema (The Pawnshop/Abnormal Sensations) combining the ethos of Can's Ethnological Forgery Series (EFS) with the studio trickery of Delia Derbyshire and unshakable credentials as one of the founding figures of Giallo film music and Italian psych soundtracks.

Perhaps best known amongst fans of Italian production music and Giallo movie soundtracks as the wife of the legendary Alessandro Alessandroni, composer, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Giulia De Muittis was an equally formidable force who emerged from the formative years of the aforementioned anti-genres and rose to a monarchic status within the country's vibrant, and seldom rivalled musical secret society. The cliché behind every successful man, there is a strong woman' might not do Alessandro and Giulia's long-running creative unison justice but one thing that rings true that in the shadows of Senor Alessandroni's limelight (illuminated by his work with Ennio Morricone for the films of Sergio Leone and Dario Argento) remained a darker musical feminine force which in time has come to represent the duo's finest and most sought after sonic artifacts. In a career that spanned four decades until her untimely death in 1984 Giulia's collaborative work as a reliable creative all-rounder and pop polymath has stood the unshakable test of time like few other musicians resulting in projects like The Pawnshop, Femina Ridens, Revolver, Questo Sporco Mondo Meraviglioso, The Night Evelyn Came Out Of The Tomb, Angoscia, Inchiesta Giudiziaria and Witchcraft '70 (Angeli bianchi Angeli neri) earning increasing Most Wanted' status on the collectors' market. It is of no coincidence that Giulia's nom de plumes, Kema and De Muittis, have in recent, more educated years, become trusted seals of approval which connect top choice composers such as Raskovich (aka Sorgini), Stelvio Cipriani, Morricone, Braen (aka Alessandroni) Amedeo Tomassi, Piero Umiliani and Bruno Nicolai amongst select others. It is, however, De Muittis' seldom heard self-initiated solo work for small independent Italian library music imprints that reveal a unique multi-instrumentalist female composer working at her most intimate and uncompromised best

What we have here is a stunning crime-jazz soundtrack blended with exotica flavor, composed by one of the main legend of Italian sound: an Armando Trovajoli at his best, with an outstanding, still undiscovered film score, unreleased on every format until today. The amazing main theme, sung by the astonishing voice of Lyda McDonald, was published on an mega-rare 7'' on RCA label in 1961 and is now impossible to find. All the rest of the score is completely unheard, finally back to life by this priceless Four Flies' release.

The masters for Barry's Raise The Titanic' were lost and the film was panned by both critics and audiences alike upon its release in 1980. When Barry went on to win an Oscar for his supremely successful score for Out of Africa' five years later, the demand for a release of Raise The Titanic' resulted in The City of Prague Philharmonic making the recording for Silva Screen Records, conducted by Nic Raine who worked as Barry's arranger and orchestrator for over 15 years. This critically acclaimed recording can now be enjoyed on vinyl for the first time.

It is the synthesis of a national jazz scene in full artistic growth. Over a 60 year career director Akira Kurosawa's films have passed into cinematic legend and he retains his status as one of the most influential and preeminent film-makers of the 20th Century. Films such as Rashomon, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha and his last great epic, Ran are all regarded as milestones in the history of celluloid.
The latter, the most expensive film made in Japan up to its release in 1985 is loosely based on Japanese legend and Shakespeare's King Lear. Composer Toru Takemitsu ranks as highly in the echelons of Japanese music as Kurosawa in film with a prolific output of soundtracks alongside major music works and books. Commissioned on Kurosawa's instructions to deliver a score inspired by Mahler with up to 40 disparate takes of music, the spectral and eerie sounds capture perfectly the imagery on screen.

Johnny Jewel is helming the soundtrack and score for Lost River — Ryan Gosling's directorial debut. The soundtrack will feature music from the score, as well as songs from the film by Glass Candy, Chromatics, Desire, and Symmetry, plus songs sung by Saoirse Ronan and Ben Mendelsohn, who star in the film.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, a number of Ukraine's youth wound up homeless and addicted to a lethal cocktail of injected cold medicine and alcohol. Steve Hoover's documentary Almost Holy follows a pastor named Gennadiy Mokhnenko, who saves street kids, at times by forcible abduction, and brings them to his Pilgrim Republic rehabilitation center. The film's depiction of a country in the grip of poverty, addiction, and warfare is made even more powerful by its captivating electronic score by award-winning composer Atticus Ross, his brother Leopold Ross, and Bobby Krlic (The Haxan Cloak).

Occasionally a project comes along where one feels compelled to contribute,' Atticus said of seeing the early footage that convinced him to work on the film. It's a different world over there - of course we have dire poverty in the U.S. - but to see an army of drug-addicted children living in those conditions, children the same age as my own, under ten years old but covered in track marks and sleeping on sewers to stay warm, and someone is asking you to write a little music to help the cause. It would be hard to find a reason not to.'

His collaborators felt the same way, and the trio soon began work on the score — the Ross brothers in the U.S. and Krlic in the U.K. The distance meant the composers initially worked separately, but in the end, the soundtrack feels remarkably coherent.

The message and content of film kept the trio inspired, and once Krlic had emigrated to the U.S., they met at Atticus' studio and continued to work on the album as a free-standing piece. The film remained the anchor and the catalyst for their creativity, but several of the tracks on the record don't appear in the picture at all. Almost Holy is thus not simply a soundtrack album, but a soundtrack and an album, one that both enriches its film and stands apart from it.
