Chain Of Flowers return with their lofty and long-simmering sophomore full-length, rich with reckonings, reverb, and redemption: Never Ending Space. Despite some of the songs dating back a few years, the record first began materialising in earnest during the pandemic, by which point most of the band had relocated from Cardiff to London.

Reunited and rejuvenated, they picked up where they left off, booking two multi-day sessions at Hackney hub Total Refreshment Centre with producer Jonah Falco. In this time they successfully channelled their kinetic chemistry into 10 full-blooded anthems of torn dreams, poetic delirium, and “hope stretched too far.” Musically, Never Ending Space skews notably more maximal than the group’s previous work, fleshed out with trumpets, saxophone, synth, percussion boxes, and spoken word. (Smith jokingly calls them The Chain Of Flowers Orchestra).

Yet the songs still swing and soar with a charged heart, ripe with hooks, drama and ragged melody. Opener “Fire (In The Heart Of Hearts)” stirs to life on a tide of wiry guitar and defiant horns, facing down the embers of love that still glow in the wake of pain: “Peace came tumbling like a shower of bricks / The mind twists slowly till everything fits.”

A tense energy ripples throughout – from the nocturnal rush of “Serving Purpose” and “Amphetamine Luck” to the bruised battle cries of “Torcalon” and “Old Human Material.” Outliers like “Praying Hands, Turtle Doves” hint at proggy possible futures, while instrumental vignette “Anomia” offers an intriguing glimpse at a lesser heard facet of the band: swaying, shadowy, subdued. The album’s title track is also its closing cut, a stomping, sparkling ode to “the wrong side of the night, where time goes to die.” Smith describes the scene: “Everyone’s talking, screaming, trauma bonding, but no one’s listening. Broken dialogue. Shouting over each other. You want to switch off, but everyone’s too fucked.” The guitars spiral and slide towards the oblivion of dawn, the chance to crash and do it all again.

Finlay Shakespeare is an electronic musician working from the UK and across Europe. A childhood obsession with his parents’ record collection led him to both create his own music and build his own synthesizer equipment throughout his teenage years. After studying audio engineering, he was invited to become in-house engineer for the Moog Sound Lab UK, leading to collaborations with acts as diverse as Suicide, Charlemagne Palestine, The Grid and Mica Levi & Eliza McCarthy, both in live and studio environments. In 2017, Finlay began recording a series of monthly “Housediet'' releases - all improvised and captured at home utilising drum machines, modular synthesis and processed vocals. After several encounters with Peter Rehberg of Editions Mego, a compilation of the Housediet tracks was drawn up by Rehberg and Shakespeare, culminating in the release of “Domestic Economy” in early 2019. “Solemnities' ', a second album for Editions Mego appeared the following year. In the period since Rehberg’s untimely passing, Finlay has recorded for Superpang, Modulisme and his own GOTO Records imprint. “Illusion + Memory”, meanwhile, continues on from where “Solemnities” left off, with Finlay once again aiming to work at the fringes of electronic pop. Alter is proud to present “Illusion + Memory”, the third full length physical LP of Shakespeare’s utterly unique and sophisticated output. Shakespeare’s obsession and knowledge of late 70’s and early 80’s electronic pop music is once again at the forefront of this intense and dynamic release. Alas, this is not some retro throwback. Shakespeare’s deep understanding of his machines breathes new life into a genre of music once defunct. Supporting the likes of Blancmange bolstered his reputation for sublime synth hooks and dark lyrical content. Building on his previous work in the field “Illusion + Memory” is an unabashed pop record, as joyous as it is intense, moving from the brooding opening ballad “Your Side of the River” through the punchy “Theresa” which could be read as a love song to Throbbing Gristle’s United. Elsewhere “Climb” unleashes the opportunity to the dancefloor as wild electronics snake into all manner of schizophrenic shapes. There is a romantic side to this music. In its homage to electronic pop of the late 70’s and early 80’s but also in the emotional punch Shakespeare injects into every second of every track. Shakespeare’s reboot of these musical forms is technically impressive, one rich in feeling and deep in emotion, atmospherically and vocally. The two come together to create a unique visceral sonic experience… today!

Coke Bottle Clear Vinyl. High Vis were formed in 2016 from the ashes of some of the UK's best hardcore bands. Gild-toothed frontman Graham Sayle's anguished lyrics about life in working class Britain were familiar to fans of Tremors' full-throttle thrash, but alongside his former bandmate Edward `Ski' Harper and veterans of Dirty Money, DiE and The Smear, High Vis sought to transform that energy and intensity into something entirely new.Like scene-mates Chubby and the Gang did by pulling in unlikely source material from classic doo-wop or Micromoon have by combining everything from psychedelia and metal into their high potency mix, High Vis' 2019 debut album, No Sense No Feeling showed the band were never going to be constrained by any sense of genre rules or regulations. Its claustrophobic rattle bore traces of Joy Division, Bauhaus, Crisis, The Cure and Gang Of Four lurking in the shadows. 2020's synth-driven EP, Society Exists, was further evidence of the band's restless creative MO.High Vis' second album Blending sees them open their viewfinder wider than ever before. Alongside longstanding favourites such as Fugazi and Echo and The Bunnymen; Ride and even Flock Of Seagulls were shared reference points as the band worked on the album together.From the anthemic sweep of opener "Talk For Hours", through the title track's psychedelic swirl and "Fever Dream"'s baggy groove, it sees High Vis' sound blossoming into something with an unlimited richness. The hazy drift of "Shame" or the melodic jangle of "Trauma Bonds" may take them until uncharted waters, but they still have all the power and bite that made No Sense No Feeling so remarkable.Lyrically, the album represents another leap forward too. Talking frankly about poverty, class politics, and the challenges of everyday life, Sayle's lyrics have always addressed the downtrodden and discarded communities across Britain slipping below the waterline. This time around, Sayle's lost not of that social consciousness, but he's looked at himself and his own emotional landscape, and in the process created something that feels more universal, that reaches a hand-out to people and ultimately gives a message of hope."To me, the lyrics are less selfish," reflects Sayle. "In the past, I couldn't see past whatever was going on with me. It's about accepting things and being open to conversations and learning to talk to people rather than just thinking that we're all doomed."The song "Talk for Hours" is a prime example of that. Born out of an afternoon meeting up with an old group of mates "repeating the same thing and not actually learning anything about each other" it offers to actually break the cycle and to listen and speak frankly about shared feelings and experiences. "Trauma Bonds", meanwhile, traces the broken lines of those living in lost communities, but ultimately realises that despite our shared scars, there's still hope to move on to a better future."The message of the album is you're not who you're told you are," Sayle summarises. "You're not your class background. Whatever it is, you're not that. Don't resign yourself to thinking you can't be this and you can't be that."It's a vitally important message right now, and one that could be the motto for not only Blending, but for High Vis themselves.

Der in Berlin ansässige Multi-Instrumentalist, Produzent und Fotograf Klaus Sahm begann sein musikalisches Leben damit, in einer Hardcore-Band Gitarre zu spielen. Er setzte seine Reise fort, indem er Klavier studierte, während er als musikalischer Leiter und Produzent für namhafte Künstler im Pop-Genre arbeitete. Seine eigene Musik und Kompositionen neigen zum Ruhigen, zu leisen Tönen und konzentrieren sich immer auf einen eigenständigen Klang und ein Gefühl, das irgendwie melancholisch und zugleich etwas bittersüß ist. Der Aufnahmeprozess beinhaltet immer echte Instrumente, echte Bandechos und analoge Hallgeräte - Dinge, die nicht ein zweites Mal reproduziert werden können. "Das Klavier ist das, was meinen Gedanken am nächsten kommt - wie eine Übersetzung für Dinge, die ich sagen möchte, Gefühle, die ich ausdrücken muss, und Sorgen, von denen ich mich lösen muss. Schon früh, als sie aus Uncle Tupelo hervorgingen, gab es die Idee, dass Wilco eine Country-Band sei, oder zumindest eine alternative Country-Band. Und es gibt Beweise dafür - "in allem, was wir je gemacht haben, gab es Elemente von Country-Musik", sagt Jeff Tweedy.
"Wir haben uns nie besonders wohl dabei gefühlt, diese Definition zu akzeptieren, die Idee, dass ich Country-Musik mache. Aber jetzt, nachdem wir ein paar Mal um den Block gegangen sind, finden wir es aufregend, uns innerhalb der Form zu befreien und die einfache Einschränkung zu akzeptieren, die Musik, die wir machen, Country zu nennen."
Cruel Country besteht fast vollständig aus Live-Aufnahmen, mit nur wenigen Overdubs. Alle - Tweedy, John Stirratt, Glenn Kotche, Mikael Jorgensen, Pat Sansone und Nels Cline - waren im Raum und spielten zusammen im The Loft in Chicago, ungetrennt durch Schalldämpfer.

After the inevitable success of L'Hiver des crêtes (aka season 1 of their major new project celebrating 40 years of approximate punk), Ludwig Von 88 are back for new adventures in a second season entitled Le Printemps du Pogo. This second vinyl album (of the four planned this year) is this time illustrated by LauL (iconic graphic designer of the 80s - Bérurier Noir, Ludwig Von 88, Mylène Farmer, Patrick Topaloff).

Fourteen tracks packed with love, joy, shitty jobs, noisy neighbours, flowery pogos, fried chicken, unsanitary dungeons and a negative carbon footprint.

There are some good traditional Keupon numbers, but also ska, reggae, yodelling (Yodel to Hell), a universal anthem of destructive punk (Youplapunk), swing, the follow-up to Fistfuck Playa Club (New Club) and Kaliman (Kaliman saves the world), and the long-awaited conclusion, 38 years later, to their interstellar hit J'ai tué mon père (J'ai sauvé mon père). Or the hit Let it burn, which we'll probably be able to sing along to during the long hot days to come.

Thirteen of these songs have already been released on the internet (at a rate of one a week, because the Ludwigs like periodicity, and that's why they keep coming back and coming back) but the fourteenth track, Casques Rouges, is completely new to the galaxy.

So here's something to liven up the weeks of holiday that are just around the corner. On the beach, in the mountains or in the forest, approximate punk remains salvific and Ludwig Von 88 are its most faithful servants.

Zur Feier des 15-jährigen Jubiläums von 'The Hawk Is Howling' erscheint am 22. September 2023 ein brandneues 2LP Remaster des Mogwai Albums auf weißem Vinyl, auf den Tag genau fünfzehn Jahre nach der ursprünglichen Veröffentlichung des Albums. Das Album wurde von Frank Arkwright in den Abbey Road Studios neu gemastert.

Das ursprünglich 2008 veröffentlichte 'The Hawk Is Howling' wurde mit Andy Miller in den Chemikal Underground Studios aufgenommen und von Gareth Jones im Castle Of Doom Studio abgemischt und stellte eine Rückkehr zu den rein instrumentalen Wurzeln der Band dar. U.a. enthalten auf dem Album ist auch die Single 'Batcat'.

Die in London lebende österreichisch-brasilianische Künstlerin Viji kündigt ihr mit Spannung erwartetes Debütalbum 'So Vanilla' via Speedy Wunderground an!

Viji - mit bürgerlichem Namen Vanilla Jenner - bezieht sich auf die lässigen, schmierigen Sounds der 90er Jahre und hat sich als eine der aufregendsten alternativen Künstlerinnen etabliert, die man in Großbritannien derzeit beobachten kann. Nachdem sie bereits Musik auf Dirty Hit veröffentlicht hat, ist sie seit kurzem bei Speedy Wunderground unter Vertrag und hat sich schnell eine treue Fangemeinde aufgebaut, während sie von Leuten wie Jack Saunders von BBC Radio 1, Steve Lamacq von BBC Radio 6 Music, CLASH, Dork, DIY, Wonderland, So Young und vielen anderen gefeiert wird. 'So Vanilla' wurde überwiegend in London aufgenommen, in Zusammenarbeit mit dem vierfach für den Mercury Prize nominierten Produzenten und Chef des Boutique-Labels Speedy Wunderground, Dan Carey (Fontaines D.C., Kae Tempest, Wet Leg). Nach der Fertigstellung von 'So Vanilla' im November 2022 erzählt Viji, dass jeder Song einen anderen Entstehungsprozess hatte - bei einigen spielten sie und Carey stundenlang Gitarrenakkorde zusammen, bis die Klänge zu einem einzigen verschmolzen, und andere entstanden aus nächtlichen Grübeleien zu Hause.

Explosions In The Sky haben ihr erstes Album seit sieben Jahren angekündigt! “End” erscheint am 15. September über Bella Union. Die erfreuliche Meldung erfolgt zeitgleich mit der Veröffentlichung des Eröffnungsstücks “Ten Billion People” und der Ankündigung einer ausgedehnten Tour, die die Band auch im November nach Deutschland bringt.

2002 erschien das Debütalbum von The Bees 'Sunshine Hit Me' und bediente sich einer breiten Palette von Einflüssen, darunter Psychedelia, Reggae, Indie und 60s-Rock, was den Briten eine Nominierung für den Mecury Prize einbrachte. Nun wurde das Album remastered und wird als blaue LP (mit 2 Bonus-Download-Tracks) neu aufgelegt.

The Blackwhitecolorful sind eine Kölner Alternativ Rockband mit ihrem 2. Longplayer. Ihr Anspruch dabei ist es, ein lebendiges Oxymoron zu sein: Inhaltliche Tiefe schaffen, sich mit komplexen Themen auseinandersetzen, dabei aber zugänglich und einfach bleiben.

Während das erste Album sich noch damit befasst, unbekannte Ozeane zu ergründen, geht es nun darum, den Weltraum zu erobern. Musikalisch manövrieren The Blackwhitecolorful gekonnt zwischen Alternative Rock/Metal, Post-Rock und Post-Hardcore. Neben tiefen, voluminösen Gitarren und glasklaren, eingängigen Vocals finden auch lange Synthesizer-Passagen und Instrumental-Parts ihren Platz. Ein weites Spektrum von sanften Klängen bis hin zu harten Rhythmen. Die erste Single Echoes vereinbart exakt diese Reibungsfläche breiter Gitarren und moderner Synths, sanfte Vocals, ohne auch nur für einen Moment den treibenden Puls zu verlieren. Zahlreiche Kooperationen runden das Ganze ab: Sänger: innen Tobias Brandt (Cera Maven), Emelyn Blanco (Privacy Please) und Eric Stöcker (Illusions Fade), sowie 1LIVE-Moderator Kotaro Dürr für ein Gastspiel am Bass. 2021 spielte die Band auch beim ARD Film Taufalarm-Familie ist ein Fest mit & steuerte 4 Songs zum Soundtrack bei.

Jenny from Thebes begann, wie viele Alben der Mountain Goats, mit John Darnielle am Klavier, bis ein Text entstand. Dieser Text, "Jenny was a warrior / Jenny was a thief / Jenny hit the corner clinic begging for relief", wurde zu "Jenny III", einem Song, der eine Herausforderung darstellte, der er sich nie zuvor gestellt hatte: eine Fortsetzung zu einem seiner beliebtesten Alben zu schreiben.

Der Katalog der Mountain Goats ist voll von wiederkehrenden Charakteren_Jenny, die ursprünglich in dem ihren Namen tragenden Stück All Hail West Texas auftaucht, sowie in "Straight Six" von Jam Eater Blues und dem Transcendental Youth side two jam "Night Light", ist einer von ihnen, jemand, der unerwartet in einen Song eintritt und die Ohren der Fans spitzt, die darauf erpicht sind, die verschiedenen Erzählstränge fortzusetzen, die sich durch die Diskografie der Mountain Goats ziehen, bevor sie im Nebel verschwinden.

In diesen Liedern wird Jenny weitgehend durch ihre Abwesenheit definiert, und diese Definition wird ihr von anderen Charakteren gegeben. Sie läuft vor etwas weg.

Diese Merkmale sind betörend, sowohl für die Figuren, die ihre Geschichte bisher erzählt haben, als auch für den Zuhörer. Sie laden zu bestimmten Fragen ein: Wer ist Jenny wirklich? There's something intangible about Celeste, the Soundcarriers’ second album, originally released in 2010. It has a light, lucid quality, almost like driving exhausted through a strange city at night. Freeflowing yet tethered, dreamy yet attacking, the band continue the fight to reconcile competing impulses. Various threads just about keep the shimmering tapestry from tearing. Haunting folk melodies underpinned by rhythmic static and the physicality of the totally analogue recording and mixing, baroque keyboard counterpoints and sweeping arrangements. The opener “Last Broadcast” seems to encapsulate this but it's almost as if the album gets the angst out of its system with this track and is free to explore the quieter, less crowded back streets. After the smoke of “Last Broadcast” has cleared, the twisting road takes in the soft introspection of “Hideaway” and “Morning Haze”, both tracks morphing into heavy psyche grooves or the eastern tinged psyche funk of “Signals” and “Rise And Fall”. Or takes another turn with the tightly arranged opening segment of “Long Highway”. Somehow it still manages to fit in ‘60s pop gems like “There Only Once”. An album to really lose yourself in, yet more concise than the sprawling Harmonium and more relaxed and freeflowing than the nervy rush of Entropicalia, Celeste could be arguably their most indispensable album and not to damn it with faint praise, their most listenable.
