We never made as many demos and drafts- almost forty or fifty - for any release before. Then suddenly Paul played a guitar riff and we knew that something had been unlocked in our creative process, like a revelation, it later became our album opener ‘Open the Gates’.

Everything escalated from this first melody and we began seeing the picture of what we wanted sonically: prominent synths creating this levitating feeling, powerful uplifting guitars and lyrics that captured the almost spiritual high we get when creating music. Red Hot Chili Peppers announce their brand new studio album, Return of the Dream Canteen which will be released October 14th on Warner Records. The surprise announcement was dropped at Denver’s Empower Field to rapturous response as the North American leg of their critically and commercially acclaimed global stadium tour kicked off.

The news of Return of the Dream Canteen's imminent release marks the band’s second album of 2022, hot on the heels of the platinum-selling chart topper Unlimited Love which was released in April debuting at #1 in the UK. Over 19 tracks, Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music mines gold from dollar bin country-rock detritus to reconstruct events as seen from the genre's wild west - Americana's vast private press substructure. As progenitor and contemptuous poster boy for the music that came to be Cosmic American, Gram Parsons found himself mired in a recording career spent mostly in scouting the perimeters of chart success. "He hated country-rock," Parsons collaborator Emmylou Harris would later reflect. "He thought that bands like the Eagles were pretty much missing the point." Parsons had been orbiting the idea of Cosmic American Music for some time. In 1968 he'd parted ways with the Byrds and was looking to take air with a new project. "It's basically a Southern soul group playing country and gospel-oriented music with a steel guitar" he told Melody Maker, on the subject of The Flying Burrito Brothers. So it was that when A&M's Burrito Brothers debut The Gilded Palace of Sin made it to shelves in February of 1969, early adherents to the Cosmic American gospel were already echoing its message from areas flanking Gram Parsons' Southern California hills and canyons. There was F.J. McMahon in coastal Santa Barbara, Mistress Mary further inland in Hacienda Heights, and Plain Jane of Albuquerque, New Mexico, each responding by committing their own private readings to tape before day one of the 1970s. Parsons himself might've disdained them, had he even been aware of such minor ripples, shimmering at the edges of his desert oasis. But these were true believers all the same, given over fully to his roots music concept, each filling vinyl grooves with non-rock instrumentation like fiddle, banjo, and pedal steel guitar, the last undoubtedly Cosmic American Music's most distinguishing stringed signifier. Only too predictably, big labels did the grunt work of confining and defining the movement, as ABC, United Artists, RCA, and more played catch-up with Asylum's raptor rock juggernaut, via backwoods crossover also-rans with names like Gladstone, American Flyer, and Silverado. Twang reigned, the shitkickers kicked shit, and the vaguely western-sounding guitar records piled up. Country-rock became "the dominant American rock style of the 1970s," as Peter Doggett's comprehensive Are You Ready for the Country put it much later. Wayfaring Strangers: Cosmic American Music picks up and dusts off golden ingots from the dollar-bin detritus of that domination, to reconstruct events as seen from the genre's real Wild West-America's one-off private press label substructure.

The duo Weekend Affair, gazing up at the sky, composed and wrote their third French album, Vol Intérieur, with clouds, planes, and birds in mind—everything that floats in the air and gives the impression of a certain kind of freedom. The lyrics reflect the love stories so dear to Louis Aguilar, sung over Cyril Debarge’s minimalist synth-pop instrumentals, where the bouncing bass and strong kick are never far behind. As in 2018 with the album Du Rivage, the duo teamed up with Reims-based producer Yuksek to refine their artistic vision and bring their songs to the edge of dance music.

This subtle balance has become the duo’s signature, growing more distinct with each album. The album consists of 10 tracks, including a cover of Le courage des oiseaux by Dominique A. The 150,000 streams of the first two singles from the album show that their listeners haven’t forgotten them and are quite on board with this new release.

Beth Gibbons veröffentlicht ihr erstes Soloalbum Lives Outgrown am Freitag, den 17. Mai 2024. Das Album enthält 10 wunderschöne neue Tracks, die über einen Zeitraum von 10 Jahren aufgenommen wurden. Produziert wurde das Album von James Ford & Beth Gibbons mit zusätzlicher Produktion von Lee Harris (Talk Talk).

Lives Outgrown ist in gewisser Weise Beths bisher persönlichstes Werk, das Ergebnis einer Periode anhaltender Reflexion und Veränderung - "viele Abschiede", wie Beth sagt. Abschiede von der Familie, von Freunden, sogar von ihrem früheren Ich. Es sind Lieder aus der Mitte des Lebens, wenn der Blick nach vorn nicht mehr so viel bringt wie früher und der Blick zurück plötzlich einen schärferen Fokus hat. Die Lieder handeln von Mutterschaft, Ängsten und den Wechseljahren (die Beth mal als "massive Prüfung" und mal als "massiven Abstieg" beschreibt, der "dich in die Knie zwingt") sowie zwangsläufig auch von der Sterblichkeit. Aber nach diesem Jahrze hnt des Wandels und der Neuausrichtung hat Beth das Gefühl, eine neue Bestimmung gefunden zu haben. "Jetzt, wo ich am anderen Ende angekommen bin, denke ich einfach, dass man mutig sein muss", sagt sie.

In rohen, fantasievollen, manchmal schmutzigen Vignetten, die von hinreißenden, langsam vor sich hinschreitenden Popsongs untermalt werden, fängt Bandleader Greg Gonzalez alle Emotionen ein, die eine romantische Beziehung hervorruft. Doch während frühere Alben aus einem Sammelsurium von Beziehungen schöpften, konzentriert sich das dritte Album 'X's' auf eine einzige Beziehung, die sich über vier Jahre erstreckte. "Die Platte fühlt sich brutal an", gibt Gonzalez zu. "Ich könnte mich hinsetzen und mit jemandem über diesen Verlust reden, aber das würde nicht mal an der Oberfläche kratzen. Gonzalez hält sich nach wie vor an die klassischen Strukturen des Popsongs, hat sich aber von den klanglichen Eckpfeilern der 50er und 60er Jahre entfernt und fühlt sich nun vom Slow Dance der 70er/80er Jahre angezogen. Auch wenn diese Veränderungen (in typischer Cigarettes-Manier) subtil sein mögen, so ist das Resultat doch eine andere Energie, eher vergleichbar mit Tränen, die sich in der Discokugel brechen, um ein starkes Bild zu bemühen.

Impressed are honoured to be working with JET to press and release their first new music in 15 years. The single, Hurry Hurry, which we first heard on their tour last year, is a belter.

The B-side of the single is a song called Un’avventura, a cover of a cover: Wilson Pickett’s version of Un’avventura performed by Lucio Battisti at the 1969 Sanremo Music Festival. It’s sung in half Italian/half English and is a nod to front man Nic Cester’s time spent living in Italy over the last 15 years.

We sold out of a run of 200 orange 7"s in a day in May. And the band sold numbered black 7"s on their recent Australian tour, and there will be a further 20 sold per show on their forthcoming Italian tour. (These black vinyls are numbered 1-500).

Die in Naarm/Melbourne ansässige Rockband Floodlights kündigt ihr drittes Album 'Underneath' an, das am 21. März 2025 über PIAS Australia veröffentlicht wird.

'Underneath' entstand inmitten ausgedehnter Tourneen durch Großbritannien und Europa, Australien und den USA, und wurde von einer surrealen Phase im Leben der Bandmitglieder geprägt - voller Premieren, der Erkundung neuer Orte und den bisher größten Gigs und Festivals.

Trotz der Vergänglichkeit ihres neuen Lebens auf der Straße erwies sich der Schreibprozess als eine äußerst intime Zeit, die von ruhigen, gemeinsamen Momenten der Kontemplation geprägt war. Die Songs, die dabei entstanden sind, repräsentieren einen Prozess der Abrechnung, der Katharsis und des Wachstums innerhalb der Gruppe. Sie verschmelzen die prägnanten gesellschaftlichen Reflexionen, für die sie bekannt sind, mit persönlicheren Meditationen über Trauer, Erinnerungen und Orte und geben schließlich den unzähligen Emotionen und Erfahrungen, die unter der Oberfläche schlummern, Gestalt. Mit ihren einhüllenden Alt-Rock-Klanglandschaften malen Floodlights auf 'Underneath' eine Metamorphose in Bewegung, während sie im Kern erforschen, was es bedeutet, ein Mensch zu sein.

Gegründet 2017 in Bristol, hat die vierköpfige Band bisher ein Album veröffentlicht - ihre Debüt LP 'All Gas No Brakes' (Alcopop! ) - sowie eine Reihe von EPs, allesamt bei Balley Records, dem Label von IDLES, mit denen die Band eine enge Freundschaft verbindet. Sie waren zusammen auf Tour und haben sogar eine gemeinsame Split 7" veröffentlicht. Auch als Support für The Oh Sees, Portishead und Metz konnte man Heavy Lungs schon bestaunen. Iggy Pop spielt ihre Songs regelmäßig in seiner Sendung auf BBC 6Music.

Heavy Lungs berufen sich auf verschiedene Referenzen - von Danny Brown bis zu Iggy's Stooges -, die Hinweise auf ihren Sound geben können oder eben auch nicht. Sie beschreiben sich selbst schlicht als „eine laute Band aus Bristol“.

Robert Sotelo is a bedroom pop songsmith who lives in Glasgow. Sotelo has released six albums since 2017, three of which came out on Upset The Rhythm. He also performs in Order of the Toad, Dancer and Nightshift. Mary Currie is best known as half of touchstone DIY experimentalists Flaming Tunes, alongside Gareth Williams (of This Heat). Currie also performed in Officer! with Mick Hobbs amongst others.
Introduced via a mutual friend, Sotelo approached Currie last year about collaborating on four songs he was constructing with producer/electronic guru Joe Howe. This resulted in the ‘Dream Songs’ 7” EP (out October 4th on Upset The Rhythm).
Not only does the title capture the hazy, reflective nature of the music it also expounds on the origin of tracks. Sotelo experienced several lucid dreams in the first half of 2023 that left him in a state of confusion. He recalled visiting parts of London vividly, including a disused theatre of great familiarity, yet it slowly transpired that these places and circumstances were not real, much to Sotelo's disbelief.
These reveries informed the lyrical narrative of the four songs from the forthcoming EP. Currie took a similar approach with her lyrics, focusing on memory and time for her passages on the record. Currie recorded her parts in London (assisted by her good friend Alison Craig) and then sent them to Howe, alongside additional location recordings to consolidate into the mixes. These four tracks flutter with a minimalist bass, drum machine and keys dynamic, allowing Sotelo and Currie’s vocals to speak deeply into the back of your mind. ‘Expectations’ is a pensive triumph of whirled moments and momentum with Currie’s final words lending much gravity “the outcome of my days is always the same, a void that must be filled, a battle against time that drags us along; mutating, spinning, ebbing, flowing. Begin again, we work to give value to time.” ‘Telegraph Hill’ boasts a glossy fluidity, as it plays with images of motorways, ancient citadels, crows, paralysis and emanations. ‘Lady Fortune’ meanwhile is a tranquil treatise on fate, imbued with finessed electronic embellishments and clarinet flourishes. You can't quite trust where these songs will take you, they feel particularly mercurial. Dreams indeed.

A few years ago, Angel Olsen quietly formed somethingscosmic, a new imprint and a home for Olsen to have “the flexibility to release when and how I want to with the help from my longtime partners at Jagjaguwar.” Somethingscosmic’s second release, ‘Cosmic Waves Volume 1’ is a compilation reimagined as a dialogue; side A features artists chosen by Olsen, with each artist choosing their own song for the collection. Side B is a collection of songs from the same artists, but chosen by Olsen and recorded by her. Each song, unsurprisingly, illuminates a new artist Olsen finds spectacular. Hearing Olsen refract the artists’ songs back to them reveals the depth of Olsen’s imagination, while spotlighting multiple exciting artists at work.

“As someone that emerged into the music scene through a small tape label,” says Olsen, “I’ve wanted to continue the spirit of discovery and of my debut release, ‘Strange Cacti’, while supporting and collaborating with artists and friends whose music I have been moved by. I feel there is something unique and special about covering another artist's song,” she continues. “We all make it our own, or we try to, but I personally always learn something new about the process when I’m engaging someone else’s words and melodies in such a close way. Time and again I find that putting myself into various different styles of songs can lead to new ways of thinking and creating.”

Four years have passed since Young Knives’ last studio outing – 2020’s aggressive and philosophical look at humanity’s propensity for hyper-violence, Barbarians – and during this time the band have taken a step to consider the changing of the world around them, their place in it, and the sometimes-futile pursuit of controlling what it is that we leave behind when we’re gone. Music fans will pick-up on the tongue-in-cheek use of the word "landfill" as an album title from a band that emerged during the post-indie-rock-revival of the 00s. But rather than dwelling on the derogatory landfill stick that has sometimes comes to beat them, Young Knives instead use this coming phase of their career to contemplate the nature of existence and how best to catalogue it through song. As lead singer and guitarist Henry Dartnall puts it, “it’s a record is about letting things go before they are taken from you, including the carefully curated images of ourselves. Embracing everything the world throws at you and not taking it to heart.”

February 2014 saw the band release their 'Back To Bagarmossen' EP on London/Stockholm indie label PNKSLM Recordings. The 10' vinyl received huge praise both internationally and at home, even picking up mainstream TV coverage on Sweden's TV4. Following the EP, Les Big Byrd are now preparing to unleash their debut full length release, 'They Worshipped Cats', on Anton Newcombe's A Records ,Anton has co written & plays 2 tracks on the album . They are supporting the Brian Jonestown Massacre on their European tour . When Anton recently visited Stockholm with his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the guys accidentally ran into each other at a local record shop, and started talking about music. Anton invited the band down to his studio in Berlin to record and jam for a few days and it was there that a big part of "They Worshipped Cats" was conceived and recorded. Les Big Byrd was formed in Stockholm by Joakim Åhlund and Frans Johansson a couple of years ago. They each eventually joined different rock bands that brought them out of Sweden and into a different world. Frans' band Fireside, got signed by Rick Rubin to his label Def American and Jocke had a taste of international success with 60's-influenced garage-pop outfit Caesars, as well as his other, more electronically flavored project Teddybears. They decided that they still - in spite of everything - had their love for music intact, and the dream in common to get the perfect band together and give it one more shot. They recruited Jocke's former bandmate, drummer Nino Keller and keyboardist Konie and started jamming and rehearsing. Joakim had been running a recording studio in Stockholm, writing and producing for Swedish and international artists, including Robyn and Håkan Hellström, and had also directed music videos for prominent Swedish exports such as Bob Hund, Refused, Broder Daniel and The International Noise Conspiracy. Keyboardist Konie also runs a studio in Stockholm, where he's been recording a number of film scores as well as many of Swedens most interesting black metal acts.

Re-issue of Cate Le Bon's April 2016 album originally released on Drag City which she described as "A coalition of inescapable feelings and fabricated nonsense," . A few years prior to its release, Cate's mother unearthed her birth certificate, and admitted to her daughter that they'd had her birthday a day off for nearly three decades. That sense of misaligned reality is the guiding force on Crab Day, where Cate establishes a strange, almost Dadaist lyrical scheme to make sense-or make more nonsense-of some unnamed life rupture that's left her grasping Ltd. coloured vinyl edition!

Returning in November 1987 with ‘Floodland’ (UK #9), and still aided by the trusty Doktor Avalanche, Eldritch hired former Gun Club and Fur Bible bassist Patricia Morrison to complete the new line-up. Featuring the hit singles ‘This Corrosion’ (UK #7), ‘Dominion’ (UK #13) and ‘Lucretia My Reflection’ (UK #20), production duties were shared with none other than famed Meat Loaf writer Jim Steinman.
