Lightnino Hopkins - First Meetino Of Blues Giants

The COMPLETE STUDIO SESSION along with LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS LIVE AT THE ASH GROVE club...now for the FIRST TIME ever on 180 gram DOUBLE VINYL!! This 1960 studio session commemorates a rare moment in blues history. With the help of the ubiquitous Lomax family, Pacific World Records managed to get four giants of the blues - Lightnin' Hopkins, Brownie McGhee, Sonny Terry and Big Joe Williams - together in-studio for this informal jam session on 6 July 1960. Interestingly, it was also the first time that Hopkins and McGhee had ever met (although each man had always admired the other's guitar playing tremendously). Eight years prior, McGhee had even written a 'challenge' song called 'A Letter To Lightnin' Hopkins', to which Lightnin' had the chance to respond for the first time here in this entirely improvised 'answer song' called 'First Meetin''. In fact, most of the songs on this album, like 'Wimmin From Coast To Coast' and 'Ain't Nothin' Like Whisky', are recorded in a rare call-and-answer format between Lightnin', Brownie and Big Joe. In addition, Side D features a LIVE recording of Lightnin' Hopkins playing the legendary Ash Grove folk club in L.A. the following night (7 July 1960). Pure unrehearsed genius! These men were not mere blues players, they were mediums for the divine!

SIDE A: 1. First Meetin' 2. If You Steal My Chickens You Can't Make 'Em Lay 3. Wimmin From Coast To Coast

SIDE B: 1. Ain't Nothin' Like Whisky 2. Penitentiary Blues 3. Right On That Store

SIDE C: 1. Early Morning Blues 2. Blues For Gamblers 3. Bucked And Scorned

SIDE D: 1. Excuse Me Miss 2. Big Black Cadillac Blues 3. Coffee House Blues 4. Stool Pigeon Blues 5. Ball of Twine 6. How Long Have It Been Since You've Been Home I

Two hot and wild instro's pulled together and twinned on this greasy little 45 to set tassels twirling all over the globe! 'Scorpion' is a cool and unique take on the Champs 'Tequila', with a twangy guitar lead gliding and surfing along the driving bass and Cali-Mex percussion lines underneath. Flip it over and 'Casual' gives you a dose of raunchy, sax-led sleaze, low slung and heavy like the mammaries in a Russ Meyer flick!

One of the finest piano players and vocalists of post-war Chicago blues, Mississippi native, Sunnyland Slim first came to prominence playing on the Chicago scene with the likes of Sonny Boy Williamson, Howlin' Wolf, Little Walter and Muddy Waters. By 1947 he had landed a recording contract with Aristocrat (soon-to-be Chess Records), recording his first single, 'Johnson Machine Gun', in September of that year with none-other-than Muddy Waters on guitar. This, of course, led to Muddy's historic signing to the label soon afterward. 1961's Slim's Shout, however, finds this giant of the Windy City in far-off New Jersey, at a classic recording session for the Bluesville label. Here, Slim—backed by the legendary King Curtis (best known for his sax playing on recordings by the Coasters and Aretha Franklin)—lays down favorites like 'The Devil Is A Busy Man', 'It's You Baby', and the driving 'Shake It' (check out Robert Banks' organ solo on this track). Also featuring two bonus tracks not found on the original vinyl: 'Everytime I Get to Drinking' and 'Tired Of You Clowning'!
SIDE A: 1. I'm Prison Bound 2. Slim's Shout 3. The Devil Is A Busy Man 4. Brownskin Woman 5. Shake It 6. Everytime I Get To Drinking (bonus)

SIDE B: 1. Decoration Day 2. Baby How Long 3. Sunnyland Special 4. Harlem Can't Be Heaven 5. It's You Baby 6. Tired Of You Clowning (bonus)

A House Safe For Tigers is the soundtrack to one of the seven TV movies Lee Hazlewood made with the director Torbjörn Axelman during his period living in Sweden in the early 1970s. Hazlewood had moved there to lay low and to help his son avoid the draft, but wound up finding happiness and creative freedom. Many of the albums recorded in Sweden made their way no further than Scandinavia, but of them all, A House Safe For Tigers is the holy grail for collectors, often changing hands for hundreds of dollars.
*Originally only available in Sweden, this marks the first time Tigers has been reissued and available the world over. The movie was a 'semi-documentary' featuring Hazlewood and his friend Axelman, looking back to childhood and contemplating the meaning of life. In it, Hazlewood runs a marathon, tells anecdotes about a bum who cured his stutter and convinces a group of Swedish children to take sides against Richard Nixon. 'It's strange, very strange,' Hazlewood said, 'But we meant it to be strange.

Hubert Robinson - High Class Woman / Old Woman B

Two raucous, stomping bar-room bawlers here from obscure blues shouter Hubert Robinson of Houston, Texas, singing over a really hot backing group playing it pretty loose with twanging bass, a head-nodding beat and honking horn eruptions!

Robinson's brief recording career began in 1947 as featured vocalist with sax-man Curtis Amy. From there, Robinson moved on to feature with a couple of other orchestra's before releasing two 78's for the husband and wife owned local Houston stable Macy's. We've picked the best of those two releases for this pairing, first time ever on 45rpm vinyl with label artwork which lovingly restores the original Macy's design!

Barbara King - What I Did In The Street

Fryers and Jazzman are used to dealing with tracks that fall under the radar for all kinds of reasons, but this legendary Sister Funk cut out of sunny Florida is almost unique in that it missed its chance to shine twice. Originally recorded as a hard-nosed James Brown inspired funk number, then again years later as a more open disco-soul inspired dance floor cut that fits in with the current trend of the new funky Northern sound.
