Phil Spector did not produce the tracks on this LP. They all just sound as if he might have.
Spector's sessions at Gold Star Studios in Los Angeles were celebrated for their extravagance. Using massed voices, an army of musicians and cavernous tape echo, his huge productions possessed a distinct aural identity.
Many record producers, songwriters and arrangers attempted to hitch a ride on the Spector bandwagon but few met with his approval. 'There's Beach Blanket Bingo, which is you guys,' he told producers Charlie Greene and Brian Stone. 'And there's me - Fellini.'
Here, spanning the period 1963 to 1967, are a dozen convincing mirror images of his Wall of Sound.
Pressed on 180g red vinyl. Inner bag features rare photos and a 3000-word track commentary incorporating interviews with producers Nino Tempo, James Holvay and Peter Antell.

This features many big names, including Slim Harpo, Lightning Slim, Lonesome Sundown and Lazy Lester among the lesser-known and obscure.

During this term his music was a Tour de Force, Bland's powerhouse vocals backed by savage, slashing guitars. He delivered hit after hit and by 1961 with the release of his legendary LP "Two Steps From The Blues" (included herein) Bobby Bland had redeemed Texas Electric Blues and Southern Soul simultaneously. This is excellent, essential music -- without a doubt, some of the greatest Blues and Soul material ever recorded..

**Recordings of 1950s folk-blues-gospel music from inmates of the Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, issued here on a lovingly packaged and designed cassette**
New reissue label Death Is Not The End debut with a limited cassette release of folklorist Dr. Harry Oster's collection of recordings from Louisiana State Penitentiary in Angola, originally released in 1959 on the Folk-Lyric label.
For a brief period, the American South was full of musicologists keen to record and archive the great and expansive tradition of folksong. The context of these particular recordings conveys the contrast between the stark dignity of the performers and the unpleasant circumstances through which they found their way into Angola. Here amongst them appears one of Angola's most notable blues players Robert Pete Williams, having served time for murder in the 1950's and going on to enjoy a fruitful and expansive recording career. For the most part though these voices belong to otherwise unknown inmates such as Tom Dutson, Andy Mosely, Roosevelt Charles and Robert 'Guitar' Welch.

Dee Dee Warwick was born Delia Mae Warrick on September 25th 1945, in East Orange, New Jersey.
Dee Dee began her musical career singing alongside her elder and more famous sister Dionne Warwick in the family gospel group 'The Drinkard Sisters' who were led by their aunt Emily 'Cissy' Houston (the mother of the late Whitney Houston). Dee and Dionne later formed their own gospel ensemble 'The Gospelaires' who also entered the field of secular music singing backing vocals for many of the hit acts of the late 50's and early 60's.
Dee Dee later followed her sister as a solo performer when she signed with the iconic songwriting team of Leiber and Stoller who were instrumental in all of her first three solo outings. The original and much covered 'Your No Good'( Jubilee 5459) followed by the Van McCoy penned 'Standing By' ( Tiger 103 ) and 'I Who Have Nothing At All b/w I Can't Go Back' ( Hurd 79).
Dee Dee then signed for the major Mercury label, where she scored a 1965 pop hit with 'I Want To Be With You' which first appeared on Mercury's subsidiary Blue Rock label. Under the supervision of esteemed New Jersey producer Ed Townsend Dee Dee was to record several other excellent sides such as 'We're Doing Fine', 'Gotta Get A Hold Of Myself', 'Worth Every Tear I Cry' (although only an album track in the USA it did gain a 45 release in the UK) before being promoted to the main Mercury label.
Mercury released their first album on Dee Dee under the title of 'I Want To Be With You/I'm Gonna Make You Love Me' a amalgamation of two of Dee Dee's biggest hits. With Dee's original version of 'I'm Gonna Make Me Love You' later being covered as a duet between Motown heavyweights The Supremes and The Temptations. In 1969 Dee Dee recorded the first of her two Grammy nominations 'Foolish Fool' which was to become the title track of her second Mercury album. It was from this album that a further two tracks 'When Love Slips Away' and 'Where Is That Rainbow' would later find favour within the UK Crossover/Modern Soul Scene. Other Mercury records of note include Dee' Dee's uptempo cover version of the American folk/rock group The Mamas And Papas #1 hit 'Monday Monday' along with 'Don't You Ever Give Up On Me' with both songs being of interest to Northern Soul devotees.
During 1970, Dee Dee was persuaded by Atlantic records Jerry Wexler to join their subsidiary Atco label. Although a highly prolific time for Dee Dee recording wise, only one album 'Turning Around' and five 45 singles were released and subsequently her career stalled. Although one single 'She Didn't Know (She Kept On Talking)' did gain Dee Dee her second Grammy nomination.
After leaving Atco in 1972 Dee Dee's next release came in 1975 when she recorded the R&B hit 'Get Out OF My Life' under the name change of Dede Warwick for Private Stock Records which featured the excellent 'Funny How We Change Places' on the flipside again a popular song with the UK Modern Soul fraternity.
Recording wise Dee Dee was dormant until the release of her 'Dee Dee' album for Heritage Sound Recordings in 1983, followed by her 'Call Me' album for the Sutra label a year later.
Sadly after a long period of ill health Dee Dee passed away on October 18th 2008 leaving behind a legacy of great music, with even her more famous sister Dionne claiming that Dee Dee was the real singer in their family. In 2014 The American Real Gone Music label released a double cd album entitled 'Dee Dee Warwick, The Complete Atco Recordings' featuring the entire 35 tracks (many previously unreleased) that she cut during her time with Atco. It is from this cd that we have licensed the Ed Townsend composition 'You Tore My Wall Down' backed with the equally as good Ashford and Simpson penned 'Can't Wait Until Tomorrow' for their initial vinyl debut on a 45 single.

Concept album, based on ideas from demo tapes for songs he wrote for
Jefferson Airplane's 6th album, which never materialized and taken a few steps
further from there.
The concept is lyrically set in the 'summer of love' culture: make way for
the young, free love, mind expansion, let the children play; on another
planet.
So the Jefferson STARSHIP moniker was born and we and hippie all-stars are
hi-jacked to another planet, including: Grace Slick, Jerry Garcia, Jack
Casady, Graham Nash, Mickey Hart, Davis Crosby, Joey Covington, David
Freiberg, Harvey Brooks, Peter Kaunonen (Jorma's brother), Phil Sawyer.

Scott Walker Sings Jacques Brel (1981) is a compilation of Jacques Brel compositions recorded by Scott Walker. The album brings all the Brel material that Walker covered on record. Walker transformed the numbers into unique, dramatic experiences.
Each of the tracks is a gem, but three stand out: the grandiose, swirling waitz of 'Amsterdam', the powerful 'My Death', and 'Next'.
Walker achieved that rare balance that distinguishes the best interpreters others' works - preserving the essence of the original while making the song entirely his own. It's logical that Walker gravitated to Brel: the Belgian was a singer/songwriter after Walker's own heart who told stories of lives and drama. Romantic emotions are for both important in their works.

Born in Richland, Mississippi, in 1918, Elmore James didn't record until 1951 and died just 11 short years later -
yet his influence was enormous. James' distinctive slide-guitar style proved even more popular than his records,
influencing generations of six-string pluckers. So get out your air guitar (or, indeed, a real one)
and play the intro to "Dust My Broom" one more time!

The songs on this set, dating from 1951 to 1961, sum up the first half of Wolf's recording career with Chess, a period when he
ung mostly self-penned compositions. "Smokestack Lightnin'" is probably the most covered and "How Many More Years" was
the first and most successful of four songs Wolf placed on the Billboard national R&B charts in the 1950s.
Though he died in 1976, his spirit lives on - not only at the annual Howlin' Wolf Memorial Blues Festival held in
Mississippi, but also in the music that features on this superb 2 LP set.

At the start of the Fifties Miles Davis' career had hit a barrier which, for a period of time, seemed insurmountable, but by mid-decade, with his substance-abuse troubles behind him, he had established himself as one of the major artists on the modern jazz scene.
'Kind Of Blue' can often be found at the very top of jazz record polls and, despite competing claims, is probably the best-selling jazz record of all time. The listener should be in no doubt that they now own some of the most essential music of the twentieth century and on gleaming blue vinyl!

When it came out in 1961, Martin Ritt's film Paris Blues was hailed as one of the best movies about jazz ever released. Its stars, Paul Newman and Sidney Poitier, were at the top of their game, but the real kick came courtesy of Duke Ellington's score and a cameo role for the man who was said to have 'invented jazz' - Louis Armstrong. Enjoy it here, now on glorious vinyl.

This - richard bargel nils de caster roland van campenhout'-Record Store Day 2016-10inch special vinyl edition offers two recordings never released before. Taken from same concert evening at the traditional venue Theater der Keller in Cologne, as used on - Just Another Place In The Universe'. After - Da Blues Iz-A Coming' the second collaboration of Belgian blues legend Roland Van Campenhout and Cologne based label Meyer Records.
One side of the 10' single (45RPM) includes a long and funny version of - Frankie & Johnny' (8:36). This old ballad by Hughie Cannon arranged by Roland Van Campenhout was the last bonus of that groovy evening. The other side encloses a funky version of Richard Bargel's - Don't tell me lies (5:51).
Roland Van Campenhout has been an active since the early 1960s and internationally renowned blues musician since 1969. Richard Bargel is one of the most influential musicians in the German blues scene. In 1956 "I Put A Spell On You" was released on the Okeh label, this release was what really changed Hawkin's fortunes.
According to legend, Hawkins intended it as a refined ballad, but he and his band were all somewhat the worse for alcoho
when they finally entered the studio. The result was intense and mesmerizing.
Although never a chart hit, the record had a massive impact. Covered by Nina Simone, Marilyn Manson and literally
dozens of others, it became a modern standard. Enjoy it once again on glorious vinyl, along with "Yellow Coat", "Hong
Kong" and "Ol' Man River".

Back in 1962 when this, the Miracles third album was released, the ten songs featured barely amounted to 27
minutes of music. But what 'I'll Try Something New' may have lacked in quantity, it more than made up
for in quality.
As one critic put it, "it features the Miracles at their early best...as young, eager kids just starting out, filled
with optimism, youthful exuberance and enthusiasm, long before record-company politics, favouritism and
restrictions changed the group forever."

This is the first record that 'The Oklahoma Cowboy' made in NYC for Alan Lomax, after his arrival in 1940, as part of his work for the Library of Congress, taped on 26th April and 3rd May. Originally released as three separate 78 rpm records, these are Guthrie's tales about one of the most dire periods in rural America, the Dust Bowl era. This quintessential work proves that Guthrie was a true minstrel of the other face of America, the one that you can't find in history books: tales of poverty, migration, storms, illness, hunger and harsh criticism of the American government. This record kills fascists.

William Onyeabor was born outside Enugu, a small, rural town in Eastern Nigeria, he created his own genre of African electronic funk in the late 70s and early 80s, making music completely unique for his time. Today, he is reaching cult status among a growing list of admirers, including everyone from Damon Albarn and Hot Chip to Carl Craig and Madlib, with some likening him to the Kraftwerk of West Africa, or a precursor to LCD Soundsystem.
Among the crate-digging few that knew of him, he is considered a complete myth. While he has never performed live and almost never given interviews, his fantastical biography is scattered and has to this day not been verified. And, though he is still alive, he refuses to speak about anything regarding the past.
According to various rumors, he left home following the Biafran War and went to study cinematography in the Soviet Union, returning in the mid-70s to start his own film company and record label, Wilfilms. He then self-released eight remarkable records from 1978-1985. He wrote and produced everything on his own, and possibly played every instrument himself. Then, at some point of his life, he became born again and denounced his earlier music, deciding it is something he would never speak about.

In his first nationally televised appearance, on the big band leaders Tommy and Jimmy Dorsey's TV variety show, Elvis Presley shocked the country with his sultry and sensational version of all-time classics like "Heartbreak Hotel" and "Blue Suede Shoes". And, although the Dorsey Bros. show might have been his first national appearance, it was the legendary Ed Sullivan performance that truly put him on the map, so to speak. This hand numbered limited edition splatter vinyl LP includes both of those legendary appearance in one place!

One of the most iconic moments in Elvis' legendary career took place on September 26, 1956, when Elvis returned, as a newly minted star, to perform in his own hometown of Tupelo, MS - playing live at the Mississippi-Alabama Fair & Dairy Show. He played two set that will go down in history as some of the most heartfelt and rollickingly rocking performances in a storied career. Essential early live material from the King himself in a limited edition hand numbered splatter vinyl version.

Buddy Holly is his debut solo album and second overall. Though billed as a solo LP, it features the same backing group as his first LP, The Crickets, one of the most legendary rock and roll combos of all-time. Released in February 1958, it was only a year later that he would die in that infamous plane crash near Clear Lake, Iowa. That info still takes a while to set in, one of the most famous and enduring icons of rock spent only a few years on the public's radar before passing. An incredible body of work all things considered and this S/T LP may be his finest recorded moments on wax.

Possibly the most iconic LP of their entire career, The Everly Brothers' 1958 S/T album feature all-time quintessential jams like "Wake Up, Little Susie", "Bye Bye Love", and "I Wonder If I Care As Much". Shockingly, as the legend goes, "Bye Bye Love" was rejected by more than 30 singers and groups before the Everlys agreed to record it, and the rest is history. Yet another required piece of early rock and roll from Rumble.

Following a six-year absence from music while he rebuilt his health, Miles Davis erupted back onto the live scene in 1981 with a new, young band comprising Bill Evans (sax, flute), Mike Stern (guitar), Marcus Miller (bass), Al Foster (drums) and Mino Cinelu (percussion). This incendiary set was taped in Japan for FM radio broadcast, and is presented here with background notes and images.

The James Dean Story is a 1957 documentary on the life of the legendary American film actor James Dean, depicted through dramatic use of still photography and interviews. Composed by Leith Stevens, and featuring a veritable who's who of West Coast Cool Jazz, the moody score perfectly encapsulates the life of the brilliant and troubled heartthrob, a man whose influence on American culture of the 20th can't be exaggerated. With a band that includes Chet Baker, Bud Shank, Pepper Adams, and Don Fagerquist, with arrangements by the brilliant Johnny Mandel, you know this is going to be full of swinging and classy arrangements and soloing, and moody ballad work. A truly great piece of West Coast Jazz, the soundtrack to a film about one of the most idolized actors in American film history.

First screened in April 1963. The plot is loosely based on Shakespeare's Othello, updated and transplanted
to early-Sixties London - specifically a jazz club situated in a converted East End warehouse.
The film soundtrack was made in Britain by British musicians, but one with very much its own musical
identity. And that identity is augmented by contributions from American jazz legends Dave Brubeck and
Charles Mingus, who just happened to be passing through London at the time of recording. Enjoy it all
night long, with or without the visual accompaniment...
