Following the recordings in 1949 and 1950 that would comprise Birth Of The Cool and help create the sub-genre of Cool Jazz, Miles had already moved on to the next thing, because that's what an innovator does. By 1951 he was recording hard-bop of the highest order on a variety of formats, including 10" and 7". This LP compiles a number of those recordings into one 12" LP, and the fact that the entire record was recorded on one day, October 5, 1951, would be surprising if it weren't the one and only Miles Davis. Featuring a crack band that included Art Blakey, and Jackie McLean in his very first recording session, this is classic 50s Miles hard-bop of the highest order. Recorded at the Lighthouse Café in Hermosa Beach, CA, on September 13, 1953, this is a historic recording for many reasons, and one of the earliest meetings of East and West Coast jazz artists. While Miles Davis and Chet Baker need no introduction, Harold Rumsey might. He was a West Coast jazz bassist who formed the Lighthouse All Stars in 1949, a long standing group that performed at the Hermosa Beach club every Sunday night for nearly a decade. Though he might not be a household name, his group featured such alumnus as Jimmy Giuffre, Shorty Rogers, Max Roach, Bud Shank, Sonny Criss, Hampton Hawes, Shelly Manne, and more. Featuring rousing renditions of 'Round Midnight', Night In Tunisia', At Last', and the killer drum solo from Roach, Drum Conversation', this is a brilliant window into the 1950s LA scene, and Miles' particular ability to fit into nearly any jazz setting with ease. Tony Sheridan may be famous for only one thing at this point in time: performing with The Beatles in their earliest incarnation. But, at the time, in 1961-1962, he was a top beat performer and a charismatic singer in his own right. Featuring several tracks backed by The Beatles, My Bonnie is classic early-60s European beat and early rock and roll. Essential for any Beatles collector and any fan of early-60s Euro-beat. Bessie Smith dominated what has become known as 'classic blues'. Living every day as though it were her last was hardly conducive to a long life, but it gave the singer experience of suffering which she brought out in her singing. Not that Bessie was lacking in humour, the recordings of more comic material are every bit as red blooded as her articulation of disillusionment and hurt. Enjoy this superb 2LP compilation including "Careless

Vocalist Joyce Wrice, featuring Kay Franklin who grew up in the Los Angeles music scene watching his grandfather John Barnes and uncle LA Jay work alongside Chaka Khan, Michael Jackson and the Pharcyde. Produced and arranged by Mndsgn. The 45 is released on Akashik records, co-founded by Mndsgn and Alima Jennings, and endorsed by Stones Throw.

Livin' Blues was a Dutch blues rock group formed in The Hague in 1967 by guitarist and front man Ted Oberg. During the early 70s they were considered, together with Cuby & The Blizzards, as the absolute top of the Dutch blues scene. Although best known in the Netherlands, Livin' Blues also gained a following elsewhere in Europe, especially in Poland. This popularity was highly visible in bookings for live shows at festivals.

The Rocking At The Tweed Mill album was recorded in the United Kingdom and produced by Mike Vernon who was working with British blues artists and groups like the Bluesbreakers, David Bowie and Peter Green amongst others. The album includes the tracks Shady Girl, Shady Girl' and Sweet Suzanne'.

The band appears to have drifted from the limelight after the early 80s but interest in its recorded work remained high into the new millennium.

The first 500 copies of this re-release are individually numbered and pressed on gold coloured vinyl.

Mountain is a band of American hard rockers from New York who broke up in 1972 and reunited a year later, remaining active today. They are best known for their cowbell-tinged song Mississippi Queen', as well as for their performance at the famous Woodstock Festival in 1969.

Mountain is one of many bands to be commonly credited as having influenced the development of heavy metal music in the 70s. The group's musical style primarily consisted of hard rock, blues rock and heavy metal.

Twin Peaks is their second live album and was recorded in Osaka, Japan in 1973. It featured the long version (32+ minutes!) of Nantucket Sleigh Ride' which is spread over two sides, and the classic Chuck Berry penned Roll Over Beethoven', Mississippi Queen' and Theme For An Imaginary Western'.

The album Twin Peaks by Mountain stands as a worthy document for their live performances.

Henry Roeland Roy' Byrd, better known as Professor Longhair, was a New Orleans blues singer and pianist. He was active in two distinct periods, first in the heyday of early rhythm and blues and later in the resurgence of interest in traditional jazz after the founding of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. His piano style has been described as instantly recognizable, combining rumba, mambo and calypso'. His distinctive style of piano playing was influenced by learning to play on an instrument that was missing some keys.

All of the best of Longhair's work on the Atlantic Records label have been collected on this compilation album New Orleans Piano. His work was famously marvelous. The version of Mardi Gras in New Orleans' reeks of revelry in the streets of the French Quarter, She Walks Right In' and Walk Your Blues Away' ride a bedrock boogie, and In the Night' bounces atop a parade-beat shuffle groove and hard-charging saxes.

The inimitable Big Maybelle, born, Mabel Louise Smith, had worked for nearly 2 decades in the music business before even releasing her first single, Gabbin' Blues' in 1952, although, to be fair, she started at the age of 12. The 1958 LP Blues, Candy & Big Maybelle, collects singles from the mid-50s on, including one of her biggest hits, Candy'. Killer jump blues and R&B from one of the finest, Jackson, Tennessee's own Big Maybelle. Reissued on 180 gram LP with download code and 2 bonus tracks.

Led by Charles Mingus and Max Roach, this 1960 recording was made, in some regard, in protest. Growing increasingly annoyed by the booking policy of the Newport Jazz Festival, which he found to be too conservative and lacking in foresight, Mingus formed this group with the such future leaning artists as Eric Dolphy and Max Roach, and the vocalist Abbey Lincoln. Recorded over only two sessions at New York's Nola Penthouse Studios, this Newport Rebels group put together a fine piece of post-bop that, despite its rather bitter beginnings, deserves to be more well known. By far one of the most outrageous performers of the early years of rock, prone to emerging from coffins on stage, with a flaming skull named Henry as his constant companion, Screamin' Jay was an insanely theatrical figure long before it was even remotely acceptable. His 1958 debut, At Home, featuring his legendary 'I Put A Spell On You,' along with surreal hits like 'Hong Kong,' 'Take Me Back To The Boot And Saddle,' or his wild-ass reinventions of old standards like 'I Love Paris' and 'Deep Purple' is a carefully arranged yet gritty, Ray Charles-gone-crazy styled, full band rhythm and blues masterpiece, filled with enough howls and groans to send chills down your spine.

Jack Orion, Bert Jansch's third album, may have surprised some fans upon its 1966 release, as it features no original compositions by Jansch. While nearly all of the eight tracks (four of which include guitarist John Renbourn) are interpretations of traditional folk songs, Jansch's experimental approach breathes new life into this repertoire through his exploratory use of open tunings and passionate, gritty vocals.

According to Melody Maker, "his interpretations illuminate the songs from a completely new angle. As sung by him, with brilliant accompaniments, the brutal world that created the old ballads doesn't seem so very far off."

The ten-minute title song foreshadows the future through the past: with his sublime retelling of this dark tale of desire and revenge, Jansch embarks on a musical trajectory he would further develop with his group Pentangle. In "Black Water Slide," a haunting ballad he first heard from Anne Briggs, Jansch plants the seeds for future versions by Led Zeppelin and Sandy Denny. Jack Orion's unique combination of medieval themes and progressive arrangements would pave the way for the next wave of the British folk revival and beyond.

This vinyl release has been carefully remastered from the original master tapes and features liner notes by Richie Unterberger.

Producer Okko Laru, who has produced such Finnish heavy hitters as Hector, Olavi Uusivirta and Ile Kallio Big Rock Band to name a few, is very well known in Finland and wanted to produce the album after he heard that Ben's band is back in the trio form. 'Here's an album that I felt I simply had to produce. It was a great pleasure and honor to capture the energy of this fabulous live-band and record it!'

This album sees Ben moving more towards a blues rock style with songs like the opener Hangmans Tree', Rocking The Boat' and Open Road, Open Book', but also never forgetting melody on tracks like Wayward Child' and Heart On Your Sleeve'.

Ben says: 'I wish people would have a more open mind about music. I hate to categorise but maybe this is a step closer towards blues rock than what I have done before, but melody still is very important to me. If I would have to file my music somewhere I'd prefer to put it under the term 'Good Music'.

"This album is about going on to Another Day, continuing regardless of the ups and downs in our lives. After all, we can't give up! And playing music is what I do day after day anyway!

Live at the Fort Collins Stadium in Colorado on May 23rd 1976

Lee Hazlewood was a late bloomer. Following a meandering career as a disc jockey, producer, songwriter, label executive and solo artist, Hazlewood hit the jackpot at the ripe age of 37 with 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin',' the song Nancy Sinatra took to the top of the charts on both sides of the Atlantic.
Its success convinced MGM Records that Hazlewood was a bankable star, and they signed him as an artist in his own right the same year. But as a self-described "non-singer" whose cult 1963 debut, Trouble Is A Lonesome Town, was little more than a happy accident, they'd perhaps gotten the wrong end of the stick where Lee was concerned.

In three years on the label, Hazlewood delivered three albums and sundry odds and ends, beginning with 1966 album The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood. The LP found Hazlewood gunning-in as much as he ever did-for commercial success, blending country, pop, novelty, mariachi, and lounge music into something unusually of-the-moment.

Lushly orchestrated and-like the album that preceded it-half-sung, half-spoken in a way that Hazlewood made all his own, the album collected solo versions of songs made famous by Sinatra and others ('Sand,' 'Boots,' 'So Long Babe,' 'Summer Wine'-included as a bonus duet with Suzi Jane Hokom) alongside some of his career-best solo compositions, among them the Morricone-like opener, 'For One Moment.' It's a record of extremes: 'When A Fool Loves A Fool' is as light and throwaway as anything he ever laid down, while the wistful 'My Autumn's Done Come' (sample lyric: "Let those I-don't-care days come in, I'm tired of holding my stomach in") is as raw and honest.

Despite MGM's best efforts, Hazlewood proved difficult to market without a Sinatra to temper his baritone drawl, and you'd suspect Hazlewood wasn't taking it quite as seriously as they might have hoped anyway. By 1967, Hazlewood had founded the LHI imprint and was busy building his own empire-one we've been lovingly archiving for the past few years. We now present this missing link in the story, plus follow-ups Lee Hazlewoodism: Its Cause and Cure (1967) and Something Special (1968). Welcome, then, to Hazlewood's magnificent MGM years.

This was Billie Holiday's penultimate recording and the last of her albums to appear during her lifetime. It is one of her most flawed, yet, at the same time, an essential recording. Timeless and unbearably emotional, this is an album that somehow documents her life in a manner never achieved by the many penned portraits or that glossy Hollywood on-screen portrayal. An essential - often astounding - recording, it was finally inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2000.

The Texan blues giant Albert Collins enjoys far greater divinity in modern times than he was ever afforded before, especially at the point in his career when he provided a stunning set at Joe's Place in Cambridge, MA in 1973. Joe's Place offered a smaller and more intimate setting for Collins who performs a selection of his repertoire including Backstroke, Frosty and Thaw Out, three gems from his 1965 debut The Cool Sounds Of Albert Collins. Collins applied his unique and revered style with piercing solos and unlikely improvisations that echoed his aforementioned debut from 1965, an icebreaker album that would help establish Collins as the guitar pioneer he is painted as today.Albert Collins was eventually acknowledged as one of the most talented and distinctive blues guitarists of his era. With unconventional tunings, savage interludes and a scorching delivery, he would earn recognition with his unique brand of blues.
