Every artist has a piece of work that niggles them—something that they wish they could redo, given the chance. It's why Paul McCartney once reproduced Let It Be and why Kate Bush re-recorded Wuthering Heights for her best-of album. For the prolific Michael Chapman, that album is Window, the missing link in the series of Chapman's early albums being reissued by Light In The Attic Records. Window sits just after the previously released Fully Qualified Survivor and Rainmaker, right before Wrecked Again.
In 1970, signed to the hip Harvest label (home to Kevin Ayers and Syd Barrett, among others), Chapman was still an artist waiting for that first big success, perpetually skint and permanently touring to make ends meet. With that in mind, he aimed to make Window in as little time as possible because being in the studio meant not being on the road. Producer Gus Dudgeon-who'd been working with Elton John-had other ideas and booked Chapman and his band into one of the UK's most expensive studios, Trident.
The singer-songwriter and prodigious guitarist was in transition from his folkier origins to his heavier future and heading for a whole mess of trouble with the same year's Wrecked Again. Given the touring bust-ups and tortured recording sessions to come, Michael's wife Andru Chapman remembers the recording of Window was noted for a 'lack of hiccups. No one threw their toys out of the pram, unlike Wrecked Again.' Recorded with U.S. guitar player Phil Greenberg, violin player Johnny Van Derek, and pianist Alex Atterson, the album has a blend of electric and acoustic instruments, both traditional and experimental at once, synthetic sounds melding with finger-picked guitars.
The trouble came later. Immediately after recording finished, Michael took the band back out on the road with the understanding that as soon as he got back, he'd put the final acoustic guitar tracks down to replace what he's always said were only guide tracks. Unfortunately, Harvest's parent label decided the album was finished and pressed it up anyway. And Chapman, as a result, hates it. Indeed, 34 years later he even set out to right the wrong, re-recording parts of the LP and noting it was a strange experience listening to 'dead people on the between-track studio chatter' (Dudgeon, engineer Robin Cable, and drummer Richie Dharma have all since passed).
As part of Light In The Attic's revival of Chapman's early career, however, the album is presented as was originally released, with Michael's blessing and albeit with two CD-only bonus tracks. Andru notes, "Warts and all, it is an important part of the Michael Chapman: The Early Years story.' Michael has been less diplomatic in talking about the album. "It is a piece of my history for those interested in that, even though I think it sounds like a piece of crap,' he says.

As with all matters related to Ariel Pink and R. Stevie Moore the exact details are vague -- but the origins of this compilation can be traced to Ariel Pink's "My Molly" e.p. from 2006. Included with the e.p. was a postcard insert that featured a hand drawn road-map to what Ariel considered to be RSM's best songs from each era. This illustrated his deep appreciation for, and understanding of, R. Stevie's vast catalog. Nearly all of the selections on this release come from that list and all were recorded between 1973 and 1984.
The final sequence for "Ariel Pink's Picks, Volume One" was sent by Ariel to R. Stevie around 2006 -- but the release didn't materialize until 2011 when Nick Noto (Big Muff Radio) discovered it while assisting with the digital reincarnation of the RSM Cassette Club. Later in 2011, Laughable Recordings released a limited run of 100 cassettes that quickly sold out and have been highly sought-after by fans ever since.
It is worth noting that the majority of these songs do not appear on R. Stevie Moore's many other compilations; and this is the first time that eleven of the seventeen tracks have ever appeared on vinyl. This essential collection was carefully remastered for vinyl release by Carl Saff in early 2014.

Mi Tierra (English: My Homeland) is the third studio album by Cuban-American recording artist Gloria Estefan, released in 1993. Produced by husband Emilio Estefan, it is her first Spanish-language album and pays homage to her Cuban roots. The album features Cuban musical genres, including Boleros, Danzan and Son music. Recorded at Crescent Moon Studios in Miami, Florida and produced by Estefan's husband, Emilio Estefan, Mi Tierra features notable Latin musicians such as Arturo Sandoval, Tito Puente, Cachao Lopez, Chamin Correa and Paquito D'Rivera. Also Sheila E and Miami Sound Machine members Clay Ostwald and Jorge Casas play on the album.
The album was an international success, selling eight million copies worldwide as of 2006, the majority of listeners non-Hispanics. The album received favorable reviews from critics, who praised the album's production, songs and Estefan's vocals. Its success won the singer a Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Album. Mi Tierra spawned no less than seven singles: "Mi Tierra", "Con Los Anos Que Me Quedan", "Tradicion", "Montuno", "iSf Senor!...", "Mi Buen Amor" and "Ayer".

Reading his work aloud, feeling those syllables roll around your mouth with the rhythms finding their own ebb and flow is one of life's greatest pleasures. In Welsh (and similarly in Somali) there is only one word to cover both music and poetry - the powerful, transformative qualities of each have always lead me to treat them both with a similar approach. I often hear music when I read great writing, especially Dylan's, which is so infused with melody and rhythm, and so the idea for this project was born.
Jeff Towns, Chairman of the Dylan Thomas Society, and owner of the one and only Dylan Thomas Mobile Book Bus' has written the notes on the poems, excerpts and short story released in this double album and also generously shares with us some of his wonderful collection of Dylan Thomas photographs and illustrations.
Choosing the works presented here seemed to come naturally, some are familiar, some more obscure. As for 'A Child's Christmas in Wales' Well, I've always loved the matrimony of music and narration in Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf and dreamed, many years ago, that A Child's Christmas' should also dance' with music.
Together with composer and arranger Mason Neely from Chattanooga, I began working toward this
goal. With the help of some of the countries leading players and soloists - Catrin Finch on harp, Alice Neary on cello, and David Adams on violin, we made this a reality. Tiger eggs indeed.

Side A features the awesome boogie funk of 'Throwdown' by Larry Harris, a phat floor-filling monster which always changes hands for big bucks in auctions. On the flip we get another in-demand bomb - The Sparkles' 'Trying To Get Over', a superb soulful disco groover with great vocals and synth hooks. Originally released way back in '81 and produced by The Strikers' Darryl Gibbs, this killer cut still remains a firm favourite of many in the know disco DJs. Top stuff!

Great new 12' compilation featuring a superb selection of tracks showcasing the Balearic sound of the mighty Richie Havens. First up is his awesome take on the Lamont Dozier classic 'Going Back To My Roots'. Originally released back in 1980, Richie's version was rediscovered later by the early Balearic DJs and became an anthem on that scene. Sing Me a Song of Songmy (subtitled 'A Fantasy For Electromagnetic Tape') is a moving anti-war statement by Jazz trumpeter Freddie Hubbard and Turkish musician Ilhan Mimaroglu, released in 1971.
It was Hubbard's third album released on the Atlantic label and features performances by Hubbard, tenor saxophonist Junior Cook, pianist Kenny Barron, bassist Art Booth and drummer Louis Hayes. The album also features a chorus, strings, recitations of poems by Fazil Husnu Daglarca and other texts, organists and tape-based musique concrète. It is one of Hubbard's most experimental albums, boasting a variety of processed sounds emanating from tapes.
Ilhan Mimaroglu was a musician and electronic music composer. He was born in Istanbul, Turkey, and moved to the United States working as a producer for Atlantic Records, where he created his own record label, Finnadar Records, in 1971. He also was the producer for Charles Mingus' Changes One [MOVLP701j and Changes Two [MOVLP856j, as well as Federico Fellini's Satyricon.

Riot City Blues is the eighth studio album by Primal Scream, released in 2006. On this album, Primal Scream leaves its electronic element behind and returns to more traditional Rock & Roll. The album features Will Sergeant (Echo & the Bunnymen) on 'When The Bomb Drops' and 'Little Death', Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Dirty Three) on 'Hell's Coming Down' and Alison Mosshart (The Kills) adding vocals to 'Dolls (Sweet Rock and Roll)' and 'Suicide Sally & Johnny Guitar'.
One can hear traces of not only the Small Faces but everything from early Alice Cooper (à la Killer) to Mott the Hoople, David Bowie, the Kinks, the New York Dolls, and a whole lot of other Rock & Roll bands. The debut single, 'Country Girl', became the band's highest charting in their career, while the album charted at #5 in the UK. 'Dolls (Sweet Rock and Roll)' and 'Sometimes I Feel So Lonely' were also released as singles in 2006.

Volunteered Slavery is a classic Jazz album by multi- instrumentalist Roland Kirk, featuring his 1968 Newport Jazz Festival appearance and studio performances recorded in July
1969. It features performances by Kirk with Ron Burton, Vernon Martin, Jimmy Hopps and Joe Habao Texidor, Charles McGhee, Dick Griffith, Sonny Brown, Charles Crosby and the Roland Kirk Spirit Choir.
Rahsaan Roland Kirk could play more than one wind instrument at once. Apart from clarinets and flutes, his main instruments were tenor saxophone and two obscure saxophones: the stritch and the manzello. He modified these instruments himself to accommodate his simultaneous playing technique. He is also noted for his circular breathing technique and was reportedly able to sustain a note for over an hour.
At the time of recording Volunteered Slavery, Kirk was exploring ways in which to make Soul and R&B rub up against Jazz and come out sounding like party music. From the Bluesy title track, through the creative choir jam on "Spirits Up Above" to covers of "My Cherie Amour", "I Say A Little Prayer" and the Coltrane medley of "Afro Blue", "Lush Life" and "Bessie's Blues", Kirk sets it all in context. He proves that he is indeed the master of any music he plays because of his sense of harmony, rhythm, and melody.

REPRESS: Blackest Ever Black presents the first vinyl edition of Dickon Hinchliffe's original score for 1980 - the second part of Channel 4 and Revolution Films' Red Riding trilogy, adapted by Tony Grisoni from David Peace's quartet of novels and first screened in 2009. Each film in the Red Riding trilogy, a landmark achievement in British television history, was helmed by a different director and had its own distinctive look, sound and feel. While Julian Jarrold's 1977 and Anand Tucker's 1983 were both marvellous, well-rounded pictures, James Marsh's1980 - photographed by Igor Martinovic on 35mm - somehow seemed to penetrate deeper, hit harder, and linger longer and more vividly in the memory. Described by Tony Grisoni as "an elegant steely trap", 1980's tragic arc is all the more devastating for the glimpses of lightness and redemption with which it taunts its hero - policeman Peter Hunter, played with astonishing grace and nuance by Paddy Considine. Warren Clarke, Maxine Peake, Peter Mullan, Tony Pitts, Jim Carter, David Morrissey, Sean Harris, Shaun Dooley and Lesley Sharp also figure in what surely ranks as one of the finest British ensemble casts ever assembled. So yes, the acting, writing and direction are all first-rate, but crucial to the mesmeric, elegiac and ultimately pincering, punishing effect of 1980 is its music, composed by Dickon Hinchliffe and performed by a small string ensemble augmented with bass, piano, guitar and percussion. A founder member of Tindersticks, Hinchliffe has played a major role in the band's scores for the films of Claire Denis (including Vendredi Soir,Trouble Every Day and Nénette Et Boni), and since flying the roost has established himself as an arthouse and Hollywood composer of considerable renown, with credits including Forty Shades Of Blue, Project Nim, Winter's Bone and Rampart. Even more eloquently than Paddy Considine's note-perfect performance, Hinchliffe's music for 1980 articulates Hunter's journey from righteousness to ruin, his optimism gradually consumed by dread and paranoia. Even at its most tender, its most hopeful, its most soaringly romantic, the stench of death is all over it.

Was gibt es noch zu erzählen über Deep Purple Zusammen mit Led Zeppelin, The Who und Black Sabbath gilt die Band als Begründer des Genres Heavy Rock. Deep Purple prägte so manch eine Jugend der 70er. New release on Sunkissed Records featuring Balearic highlights from Scottish 1980s powerhouse band Simple Minds. Recorded early in their career, these four sublime tracks illustrate just how mind-blowingly good and experimental Simple Minds were before they hooked up with U2's producer and headed down the stadium rock route. The first cut 'This Fear of Gods', plucked from the Leckie-produced 1980 LP 'Empires and Dance', is a hard-edged slice of electronica which sounds way ahead of its time rolling through an eerie soundscape of angry chants, hypnotic synths and thunderous pounding drums. Next up is the equally impressive 'Theme For Great Cities'. Produced by Steve Hillage, this lush instrumental epic had major rotation and became a big anthem in Ibiza. Ende 2013 tauchte im Netz ein Song mit dem Namen 'Drive (Part 1)' auf, ein elektrisierendes Amalgam aus zurückgenommenen Vocals, einem bedrohlich pulsierenden Bass, elektronischen Rhythmen und geschundenem Blues. Zwei Wimpernschläge später war der Track zu Tastemakern auf der ganzen Welt vorgedrungen, was Ben Khan unmittelbar zum ‚Most Blogged Artist' auf Hypemachine machte.
Es folgten die Stücke Eden und Savage, die nun auch von Pitchfork und ersten britischen Radio-moderatoren gefeiert wurden und schließlich als Tracks die Hype Machine Charts anführte.
Nur wenige Monate nachdem Ben Khan sein allererstes Lebenszeichen entsendete, verzeichnen seine Stücke allein bei Soundcloud bereits weit über 1,5 Millionen Plays.
